Ioften spend my weeks preparing stories for each month's magazine by going out into the community and exploring, meeting people, and peeking into the corners of the cities that house the creatives, the decision-makers, and the community builders; but, this month, I didn't venture much outside of my desk chair—I didn't have to. I've compiled a long list (95 items long to be exact) of the new businesses and organizations that have opened in the FM area or will be opening soon. The reason I emphasize that I was able to do this right from my computer is because, well, how cool is that?

What I mean is, yes, I scoured the internet, joined online groups, read Google reviews, and made way too many phone calls, but I was able to find so much valuable information about these new places because people are talking about them. Constant discussions are going on online about these local businesses, entrepreneurs getting the word out and other small ventures

lifting up their neighbors. Facebook groups like Eat The FM Area and Fargo-Moorhead Eats, pages like Welcome to Fargo, and even the Fargo Subreddit are filled with recommendations, questions, praises, and just awareness of what's happening and what's new in our community. It's wonderful to see so many different people sharing their local favorites, and it's refreshing too—who else can you trust, than your own neighbors in your community?

I am always going on about our community, but recently, the idea of community has felt deeper. My thoughts have inched further, from just, "my community," to "my community, my neighbors." Not so literally, but as in, who do I call when I need a cup of sugar? Who would call me when they need a stick of butter? I would not ask for anything in return or for it to be replaced, just that there is an understanding and sense that I can come back to them if I need an egg. I have been trying to make sure I am

not too transactional when it comes to my neighbors, my community. Because, really, it's not a profound idea, but it is an intentional one. It doesn't have to be something huge, it can be as simple as sharing a photo of a really tasty meal you had online with your community or putting something in the Little Free Library in your neighborhood (that one was literal).

West Main Pizza, a beloved Ada, MN classic, has opened a second location in the up-and-coming Dilworth Rail District. CJ's Tavern recently opened its doors inside the clubhouse of Fargo's Rose Creek Golf Course. Located in a space previously occupied by various local restaurants, the tavern just launched their full menu, featuring a variety of burgers and handhelds, appetizers, wings, a kids menu, and more! Now open in south Fargo, Red's Savoy Pizza has launched its 20th location, bringing its beloved 'Sota Style pizza to the Red River Valley. This unique spot is catching the attention of local food enthusiasts as the first Chalili's south Fargo location near 45th St is currently under renovation, but the newest spot at 318 10th St N, Fargo is open for business and cravings. Make sure to ask for the Haitian menu if you're interested, they don’t have that on display. We're hearing that it's affordable, flavorful, and filling—three pieces to complete the puzzle! Plus, if you want spice, your desire can be obliged.

What makes pho, well, pho? The meat and broth—and Phở TiTi has the offerings to compete. With 14 different kinds of pho on the menu, plus add-ons, on top of specials and small plates—this is the most expansive pho offering in the FM area. And, it's really good too.

While Marge's Bar is not necessarily new, they've been bitten by the brunch bug and have launched Boozy Brunches on weekend mornings from 11 a.m.3 p.m. The food menu is simple, but filled with delectable plates that marry cozy Midwestern comfort with classic breakfast tastes. El Agave completely blindsided the FargoMoorhead area—in the best way. This newest spot, conveniently located off 45th St, offers authentic Mexican cuisine with a huge variety of entrées, along with fresh, tableside, handmade, guacamole. Most would say that El Agave is one of the top contenders for the best Mexican food in the area (some staff here say it is the best, but that's not for us to decide), and the best part of all? It offers all this and more at an affordable price! If you have a sweet tooth, try the Candy Floss Margarita—with blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and agave syrup, served with delicious, pink cotton candy!

Check out these local businesses that found a new home in the FM area!

Not just another coffee shop downtown, Moonrise Cafe, in what was formerly known as Moxie Java, serves up a wide array of coffee options like iced mochas, lattes, chai teas, and more; but that's not all. This is also the bakery home of Heart Cakes, a beloved local custom cake shop that has shook the FM area for its tastes and aesthetics. Located at 111 Broadway N, Fargo, it's a perfect spot for those looking for a cozy environment, a good cup of coffee, and (my favorite part) a sweet or savory snack that is not only tasty but also includes ingredients from local producers!

While you might be prepared to—very happily, I might add—munch on some classic food court dishes when you visit West Acres, El Taco Rojo cuts through the chatter and offers fresh ingredients in delicious meals. Owned by locals with a passion for the cuisine, they're serving up authentic Mexican flavors with plates like quesabirria, tacos al pastor, birria, burritos, and more! Watch your meal cooked fresh right in front of you, and make sure you try the Agua de Fresa or a refreshing bottle of Mexican Coke!

Another restaurant has opened in the 45th St spot, called Cairo Restaurant & Bar—and it seems promising. Offering African and Middle Eastern dishes, including Egyptian and Iranian dishes, their more popular dishes

are a variety of meats with rice and crispy chicken wings. Keep an eye out as the weather warms this spring and summer, as this building offers a rooftop patio!

Cozied up on the corner of Broadway and 6th Ave N, Spaghetti Western has quickly made a name for itself as a go-to destination for authentic Italian cuisine in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Opened by a family passionate about their Italian roots, the restaurant fills the "pasta void" in town with a menu showcasing homemade pasta, traditional sauces, and imported delicacies from Italy. The recipes, inspired by the owners' grandmothers, include local favorites like Grandma's Meat Sauce, as well as the carbonara and tiramisu. After months of trying out the menu, and encouraging readers to visit, I finally did some deep digging on Vampire Penguin... and I found out, it's the most unserious brand with the most delicious flavors. It's truly a go-to for an icy treat with a twist. The founders, two brothers who love ice desserts and penguins, invented the different dishes, made up a fun story about a penguin who is also a vampire, and opened the business—sometimes it's just about the simple fun, especially when it involves crazy tasty treats. The perfect sweet indulgence for someone who is also a coffee lover is the Polar Affogato—featuring a scoop of ice cream, two shots of espresso, whipped cream, and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar!

Owned by locals Malkit Singh and Mindy Kaur, Taj India brings the rich flavors of North Indian cuisine and pairs it with some top-notch customer service. Like other offerings in the area, the menu has a large range of dishes for all diets, vegetarian and vegan included, and take special care of those and their gluten-free customers. But, unlike other restaurants, Taj India offers a lunch special that gets you two entree choices, rice, two vegetable pakora (fritters made with chickpea flour), naan, and a dessert of the day. If you're not going for the lunch special there are two things that are a must try—Peshwari naan (dessert naan, but you don't have to eat it with dessert, stuffed with raisins and coconut) and the homemade pistachio ice cream (made right in their kitchen).

Another newbie to the West Acres shopping experience you can smell from a mile away (no, not the sweet smells of the Cinamen Roll Co./Coolbird Creamery). Lush is a national retail chain acclaimed for handmade cosmetics, like bath bombs, soaps, shower gels, lotions, and hair care products, with an emphasis on ethical sourcing, vegetarian (often vegan) formulations, and a hard stance against animal testing. A new event venue has launched in downtown Fargo in the historic Stone Building—Synclaire Events Venue. Managed by local students and recent grads, CampusFM showcases the community's best, fostering deep connections and hopefully planting career roots. The initiative offers Content Creatorships, a 10week internship offered in the fall, spring, and summer for students to explore and share the FM area's rich culture and opportunities, aiming to show off what the community is all about, while engaging these current students to a point where they can see themselves becoming long-term, active residents.

This month, Kay peeked inside a truly unique part of Fargo, the Fargo Antiques & Repurposed Market, otherwise called, the FARM. Known for its novel collection and awarded the "Best Antique Shop" for four consecutive years since 2020, this market is located in south Fargo near 52nd Avenue. With vintage and repurposed items from nearly 60 different booths, all of which are curated by independent local vendors, make this a hotspot for

collectors and appreciators alike. Find furniture, signs, decor, books, jewelry, collectibles, and even vintage candies, plus, the market not only sells antiques but also specializes in repurposing old items into new, creative pieces. Kay, with her business theia, found something special at the FARM.

"One of my favorite places in Fargo is definitely the Fargo Antiques and Repurposed Market! It is filled with

so many wonders and beautiful things. I especially love all the vintage and ethereal silverware you find there, as I make rings out of silverware."

So, it’s extra inspiring to see someone locally like Kayla Duffney Creative so uniquely intertwine hers into a fulltime handcrafted business from flower crowns to wire art to custom portraits! Read on to hear about her crazy creativity and how she is using so many of her talents together.

Meet The MAKER

Tell us a bit about yourself. Hi, I'm Kayla Hagen (Duffney), owner of Kayla Duffney Creative. I'm a multimedia designer and artist living in West Fargo. I'm originally from Minnesota and migrated to North Dakota where I received degrees in both graphic design and video production. Because of my ever-expanding desire to learn more and grow in the creative field, I moved to Burbank, CA, and lived there for two years before returning home to the Midwest.

Describe what type of products you make under Kayla Duffney Creative. Outside of being a designer, I have an Etsy shop and an online store under Duffney Sisters (a studio space I own in West Fargo) where I create designs to put on apparel, sell my photography prints, offer custom portrait paintings, create wire art, and even craft flower crowns!

Tell us how you got started with your business.

It first started with painting— something I've always loved doing since I was young. I worked for a startup company out of college that specializes in personalized dog products and I was asked if I wanted to paint custom dog

portraits for customers. I was thrilled! I started taking commissions for this and wanted to expand working with my hands versus on a computer. The summer of 2019 I went to a Midsummer Horror Festival in Long Beach, CA and I wanted to dress as Dani from the film that had just come out, Midsommar. I created my own flower crown for the event and received a lot of compliments so that led me to start making these crowns for others and list them on my Etsy shop. I couldn't believe how many other fans were out there who wanted to purchase my crowns for their own Halloween costumes. In the summer of 2023, I decided to make the jump and go full-time as a freelancer and artist and created Duffney Sisters LLC. This is the studio space I use for photography and crafting. It is also the online platform where I created a shop to sell my artwork and crafts. Now I'm able to work as Kayla Duffney Creative full-time as a designer and artist and it's been a dream.

What is your personal favorite item or piece you've created so far?

Just because it really launched my love for crafting and putting together an Etsy shop, my Midsommar Flower Crown is my favorite. It was the first flower crown I listed before offering other varieties to sell.

What is the most popular item you specifically sell?

It depends on the time of year, but my flower crowns are a hit around June and between August-October! People are getting ready for their own midsummer festivities as well as preparing their Halloween costumes.

You create a variety of products within your business—how do you decide what to focus on or dive into creating?

Now that I get to do this full-time, I take it day by day. I love staying busy and knowing I have a variety of things I can work on so I'm not doing the same thing over and over. I'm looking at more vendor shows and what their theme is and that usually pulls me towards designing new items to put on apparel or possibly new flower crown themes that go with it.

What's something people would find surprising about one of your processes?

One thing with my flower crowns is that I use floral wire to attach the artificial flowers and greenery instead of hot glue. At the Midsummer Horror Festival I attended where I wanted to dress as Dani from the

film Midsommar, I originally bought a crown off Etsy and when it arrived, the flowers had already fallen off. I noticed it was because they were only hot glued and with the shipping it must've rubbed against the crown which led to flowers falling apart. My friend was the one who encouraged me to make my own. So, when I did, I wanted to make sure these flowers weren't going to fall off and taught myself how to properly "sew" them into the crown so that it could flex with my head and the silk flowers would stay attached.

What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business? The reviews I get from my customers. It's an absolute thrill when customers send me pictures of them wearing my crowns at their events and telling me how many compliments they've received.

What is the most challenging thing? Time. Because I want to do so many things, I have to be very vigilant with how I spend my time so that I can keep up with the busier months and prepare more during the less busy months.

What is one craft or art medium you haven't really dabbled in yet that you want to try someday?

I actually have a list of things (I know, I'm nuts), but I want to get more into sewing and create my own pillow covers. Who doesn't like cute pillows?

What is a word that best describes you? The first word that comes to mind is creative.

What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?

If you don't try or put yourself out there, then you know what the outcome already is. Try it and if you fail, then you learn and grow from it. If you succeed, keep growing.

Tucked in a neighborhood by Island Park, in an unassuming part of downtown, Heather Aal's entrepreneurial journey is laid out in a quaint yet lively consignment store; filled with bright daylight, stories folded into the armrests of chairs and tucked in hidden dresser drawers, and, of course, with the shop cat, Sally—Aal Yours Consignment.

Born and raised in Fargo, Heather's path detoured through Chicago after her schooling, where her life in consignment and furniture restoration began. Her passion for reviving the old would later define her career when she returned to Fargo.

She lept at an opportunity to explore various roles— one being at a Chicago consignment shop becoming her introduction to the world of vintage and second-hand goods. The vast warehouseshaped business housed a mix of items, as well as a seasoned finish restoration expert who recognized

Rescued by Heather after the loss of her previous owner, Sally transformed from a shy, basement dweller to the store's beloved mascot. Now a confident and cuddly presence, she enjoys affection from customers and has become an integral part of the Aal Yours community!

Heather's interest and potential in the craft. Under his mentorship, Heather began learning the art and science of furniture restoration—this was a pivotal experience as the motions of restoring furniture became more than just a hobby or skill and more of a therapeutic outlet.

Looking to expand her education at NDSU and find some familial stability, in time, Heather found her way back to the Red River

Valley. After a significant and fulfilling career in nonprofit fundraising, COVID-19 shifted Heather's trajectory.

It's a story we're all too familiar with, as the pandemic gripped the world, it brought unprecedented challenges to various sectors, including the nonprofit industry where Heather had built her career. Working in fundraising, she found herself at the sharp end of the pandemic's economic consequences.

Due to budget cuts in response to the financial strain caused by the pandemic, Heather was laid off, along with a significant portion of the foundation's staff.

In the wake of her job loss, Heather searched for direction amidst uncertainty, and it was during this period of reflection and introspection that a certain conversation and observation would steer her towards the idea of opening

Aal Yours Consignment. Heather's mother, an enthusiast of antiques and collectibles herself, was wondering how she would downsize her vast collection in preparation for moving. Throughout their conversation, Heather realized there weren't many options when it came to rehoming these items. They weren't just things that she wanted to donate to Goodwill, but they were too much to try to sell herself item by item on a place like

Facebook Marketplace or similar. Plus, these things had emotion tied to them, both for her and her mother.

Heather realized that Fargo lacked a dedicated home decor and furniture consignment shop, an opening she was passionately equipped to fill. Heather envisioned a space where the community could find and consign quality, unique home decor and furniture items, and a place where cherished items could be promised a loving home.

Aal Yours Consignment, now navigating its third year, emerged from necessity, opportunity, and a deeprooted love for giving new life to old treasures.

What Does Aal Yours Offer?

Operating in a niche market with a business model that depends on consignment means margins can be tight, especially during the initial years. Recognizing the need to diversify her business offerings, Heather has explored and implemented online auctions and estate sale services in addition to her storefront sales. She also feeds her creativity for restoration by offering those services.

Finding Inventory

Aal Yours Consignment primarily acquires inventory through a consignment model, where community members bring in their home decor and furniture to sell. Heather relies on the quality and condition of these items to ensure her store offers valuable finds to customers.

Engaging directly with estates, particularly those looking to downsize or liquidate assets, provides Heather with a significant source of inventory. She often assesses these items on-site, selecting pieces that she believes have market value and appeal.

Selling Inventory: In-store and Online

The traditional channel for selling consigned items is Heather's brick-and-mortar store located in Fargo. The store offers customers a tangible shopping experience to explore and discover unique and curated pieces, from furniture to home decor.

To diversify her sales strategy, Heather introduced online auctions as a way to sell items, especially when traditional in-store sales slow down or to clear inventory. This approach has not only helped in maintaining sales momentum but has also attracted new customers who may not visit the brick-andmortar location.

Restoration Services

While not the focus, Heather’s passion for furniture restoration plays a crucial role in her business. She offers restoration services for furniture that may need repair, refinishing, or repurposing before it can be sold. This not only adds value to the items but also aligns with the sustainability aspect of her business by extending the life of each piece.

Customers can also bring in their own items for restoration for Heather to provide consultations to assess the extent of restoration needed

and discuss the desired outcome with customers. Heather's restoration work also caters to the DIY community, offering advice and resources for those interested in undertaking their own projects. She understands the emotional attachment people have to their furniture and strives to preserve the integrity and stories behind each piece.

How Does it Work?

The consignment process at Aal Yours Consignment is thoughtfully designed to ensure both the consignor and Heather can benefit from the sale of items.

Initial Inquiry and Submission

Prospective consignors are encouraged to start the process by sending Heather pictures of the items they want to consign. This initial step allows Heather to assess the items remotely, determining their suitability for her store’s inventory and clientele. Based on the photos and market knowledge, Heather decides which items she believes will sell in her store. This selection process is crucial for maintaining a curated and appealing inventory that matches the tastes and needs of her customers.

Bringing Items to the Store

While the store does not provide pickup or delivery for items, they do work with local moving companies and will help you find the right wheels for your item's trip!

Once items are selected, consignors bring them to the store during a scheduled drop-off, with emphasis on the scheduled portion—to ensure that Heather can manage her inventory effectively without being overwhelmed by unscheduled drop-offs.

Upon receiving the items, Heather assesses each piece to determine its condition and market value. Pricing is a critical step where Heather's expertise and understanding of the current market trends come into play. She prices items to sell within a specific timeframe while ensuring a fair return for both the consignor and the store.

Sales Period and Pricing Strategy

Items are placed on the store floor with an initial price set by Heather. She typically allows items up to 90 days to sell, which provides a reasonable timeframe to gauge customer interest and demand.

To encourage sales, Heather implements a markdown strategy at 30-day intervals. If an item hasn’t sold within the first 30 days, its price is reduced. Another reduction occurs at the 60-day mark, if necessary. This strategy helps to keep the inventory fresh and appealing to customers while increasing the likelihood of a sale.

It just so happened that when we visited Heather at Aal Yours, Sally's old owner's grandson came in to visit her! Serendipitous timing to showcase the value and meaning behind Heather's store and its many stories.

Consignor Payout and Unsold Items

During the initial meeting, Heather and the consigner agree to specific terms like the outcome of when it's sold or if it's not. Once an item sells, the revenue is split between Heather and the consignor, typically, the split is 50/50—an incentivization for both parties to price items competitively and fairly. If an item does not sell within the 90-day period, consignors have the option to take back their unsold items or allow Heather to donate them to a local nonprofit.

and purchasing unique, often vintage, items, and serves as a connection point for stories, memories, and the preservation of history through physical pieces. Some believe every drop counts—that's why international organization, charity:water works to provide those life-changing drops by committing every penny to bringing clean water to the globe. In 2007, Scott Harrison founded the organization with a crystal clear mission— to end the global water crisis with transparency, innovation, and community participation.

nd now, Sonder Bakehouse Owner and Founder Kayla Houchin invites the local community to be part of the change. Inspired by charity:water's mission, Kayla turned her inspiration into action by organizing a gala. The fundraiser showcases the power of community and the impact of collective efforts toward a world where clean water is accessible to all.

Here's how it started...

2007

Scott Harrison launches charity:water, aiming to quench the world's thirst for clean water. With 100% transparency, every drop counts in his mission to hydrate the planet.

Summer 2012

Kayla stumbles upon "Start Something That Matters" by TOMS® shoe founder, Blake Mycoskie, and finds a mention of charity:water. Curiosity is piqued, but the adventure doesn’t start... yet.

Fall 2012

Scott visits Fargo, and Kayla's in the crowd. Frustrated yet motivated, she decides it's time to take action.

2013-2017

Kayla's efforts ripple out, turning $1,794 into clean water for 58 grateful individuals.

Fall 2018

Kayla is intent on making waves with charity:water. She set herself on a mission: to make a significant impact on the global water crisis, culminating in the idea of hosting a gala event.

January 2019

Kayla reaches out to Scott. A simple ask to bring him back to Fargo to be a part of something big here.

November 2019

Kayla and Scott finally meet at the charity:water ball in San Francisco, raising $7.3 million.

March 2020

The Fargo gala, planned for May of this year, is paused, not puddled, by the pandemic.

2018-2023

Kayla's passion pours in, raising $29,682 and quenching the thirst of 887 people.

May 2023

Kayla has a monumental start with the first-ever charity:water gala, raising $51,121 and providing clean water to 1,278 lives.

May 2024

Second annual charity:water gala—be a part of the change!

What’s New This Year?

Building on last year's success, the upcoming event promises another evening of inspiration and impact, including a silent auction, a keynote speaker, and more!

Kayla is seeking table sponsors and auction items at this time!

This year, the gala will bring charity:water's Creative Director Tyler Riewer to speak on the charity's mission. Tyler brings with him over a decade of experience and passion for charity:water's work.

The second annual Fargo gala for charity:water, happening on May 7 at Pines Black, offers a variety of participation options to support clean water. Ticket options include Individual Tickets and Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond table sponsorships. Join in on an evening of socializing, inspirational messages from both Kayla and Tyler, and a silent auction to support charity:water's mission.
