PETS CHANGE LIVES,

LET'S CHANGE THEIRS

I

've never had a cat, but I can tell you that I've been lucky enough to experience just how unconditional a dog's love can be. My dog doesn't care what I smell like (a huge plus). my dog doesn't care what I wear (also a huge plus with my fashion sense). And my dog doesn't care how many grammatical errors I made in my last magazine (please don't tell my boss how big of a plus this is). I'm her person and she adores just about every second with me. I'm lucky enough to have some wonderful relationships with a handful of great people in my life, but I guarantee at one time or another I've gotten on the nerves of all of them for any number of my different quirks or flaws. The same can be said for me. I'm nowhere close to perfect and I definitely get upset with even those closest to me for things that I shouldn't. My dog, Keyah, doesn't do this to anyone, ever. She accepts people as they are and loves them entirely. I think this is something we can all learn from. I can also tell you that my dog lives for right now. She recently had a knee surgery that was pretty invasive and my partner and I were worried that our extremely high-energy and playful lab would come out of the operating room a shell of herself and never be the same. Those concerns dissipated pretty quickly. When we picked her up from the vet, we were greeted by a dog charging after us, one leg held up in the air with a vet tech clinging for dear life behind. When she got to us, it was all excitement and wiggles. She was so wound up that she actually did the splits on the floor, which was scary but she popped up and ended up being all right. I know now and I knew then that she was in pain, she had to be. She held that leg in the air for four days and sported an eight-inch scar, but she didn't pout or think about how bad her situation was or how it could be better. Besides the limp, she was the exact same dog. She accepted her now and made the absolute most of it. I think this is something we can all learn from. The lessons I have learned from this dog are endless and she has definitely changed my life for the better. Throughout this magazine, you will find a bunch of cats and dogs that are up for adoption at various shelters throughout the FargoMoorhead area. Many of them are long-term residents of the shelters. By adopting them you can change their lives and, in the process, they will likely change yours.

*If adoption isn't an option, and you would still like to help, reach out to help with monetary donations. Volunteer opportunities may be available as well. FINDING A

Pets have a profound impact on us. They improve our mental health, provide us with companionship and are a constant source of fun! In the last "Pet's Issue" we published, we focused mostly on some of the more exotic pet options out there which was a real treat for us. We love that people in our community are bonding and forming meaningful relationships with critters of all shapes and sizes. However, in this issue, we chose to highlight america's proverbial bread and butter of the pet world: cats and dogs. In this magazine, you'll be treated to wonderful photography of some of the cutest felines and canines in the area. What's more, they could be your newest companion! Every animal you see in this issue is up for adoption and many of them have been longterm residents of their shelters. 19

I can be slow to trust people (especially men), but treats always help! I like having some space while I adjust, but once I’m comfortable, I love to cuddle. I’m looking for a home that is pretty predictable - a lot of new people coming around can make me anxious. I’m doing well as the only dog in my foster mom’s home, but I love having another big dog to play with and help me feel comfortable.

Lorraine is a spayed female cat, born in early 2020. She's curious and friendly, loves to socialize and supervise the volunteers. She doesn't have a tail because she is a Manx. She has grown up around a lot of older cats and younger kittens so she can get along with everybody and she is sure trying to do just that in her colony room. She would love to be adopted with a family member OR get to go live in a home with new kitties to befriend.

Hi! My name is Toaster!

Toaster is an adult, spayed female cat. We estimate she was born sometime in 2019 or 2020. She's a little pistol. She loves to be the first at the door to say hello to visitors. She wants to rub our legs and wind around us constantly - she loves human contact. Toaster is very curious about our chores and needs to inspect litter boxes the minute they are cleaned. She could be a great family mascot with gentle children. 41

Jacko is an adult, neutered male cat, probably born in 2018. He arrived with Mabel and Brennan. Jacko likes cheek rubs and will come out to sit with us when the building is nice and quiet. He's a good boy and would love to be adopted with his soul mate Mabel.

DOMESTIC SHORT HAIR FEMALE

McKenna is a spayed female cat, likely born in the summer of 2016. She's got a dramatic coat that makes her look larger and huge eyes that could pose for eyeliner ads. We suspect McKenna is planning world domination... she's stunningly beautiful, but she rules her environment with an iron paw and she will tell you what she wants and when she wants it. She lived with an older male cat and was devoted to him but struggled after he passed away, so she “might” be okay with another older cat. But, she will probably do better as an only pet because she is set in her ways. She will need a little time and space to get used to a new environment, so would love to find a quiet, patient family who will support her. McKenna may have had some poor experience with hands coming at her face... she can react poorly to being approached too directly. She's definitely not a cat for children!

Mental Health PSA By Brady Drake

Motherland Health, a local non-profit that provides free mental health counseling, transportation and child care during appointments, is offering a new grantfunded initiative to help the community, the Well Women initiative. The Well Women initiative offers free mental health counseling to women who are pre/postnatal while educating them on postpartum depression and other mental health issues.

47

The first three appointments they come to, they will receive a grocery card that will hopefully encourage them to continue to come." - Simi Kasakwe Why is this program important? This program is going to impact the lives of so many women in the FM area. We are creating an incentive for those who need help to finally get the help they need as well as bring something home to their families. Our hope is that once they've been able to go grocery shopping, they will have reaped the benefits that counseling brings and will continue to do the work even without the incentive.

Whom are you looking to serve? Our current goal is women, pre and postnatal. We want to drive the stigma out

48 | AUGUST 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

of postpartum depression and create a welcoming environment for them to talk about the challenges of being a new mom without the fear of judgment or insecurity.

How did you come up with an idea like this? The grant really came first. We saw the opportunity to help an often neglected subgroup of our community and went to work on creating the initiative. With the grant, we had some funds left over after budgeting and that was where the grocery cards came into play. We saw the need in the community for lower-income families to get a little extra push and wanted to be the ones to give it to them.

What can someone attending a session hope to gain? An understanding of themselves and what they're feeling. As I mentioned, many women feel an obligation to be the perfect partner and mother all the time, and when they suffer from postpartum depression, they often feel the pressure to keep it to themselves. This program was created so that the veil they've lifted over themselves to hide their struggles with anxiety and depression could be lifted.

How much will they receive on the grocery cards? $60

What else should I know? Although this initiative is for women and mothers, we have not forgotten about our men struggling with mental health. We have an initiative for men starting in January of 2022 as well. Follow us on Facebook for upcoming news about that!

Claire Smith, a Commercial Realtor for Kilbourne Group in Fargo, is raising a dog that might have received a bit of an ego boost this past year. That's because her dog, Goose, received an award of merit while competing in the prestigious and nationally televised Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. We sat down with the proud owner to learn a little bit more!

How long have you been showing dogs? I think my first time in the ring was probably around five years old! My Grandma raised English Setters and would bring me with as a baby in a car seat. We typically stick around the surrounding states and are gone 1-2 weekends per month for shows.

50 | AUGUST 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Was this your first appearance at the big event? Yes, this was the first time I’ve been to Westminster. Typically the show is in February at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Not really friendly for someone driving from North Dakota. So when we heard the show was being moved in 2021 to June at the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown we decided this would be the perfect time to go!

What is your dog's name? His registered name is Grand Champion KaraJen Kizmar Let’s Get Lit – he goes by ‘Goose’.

What is its breed? Vizsla – they are a member of the Sporting Group which is made up of a variety of hunting dogs. Vizslas were first developed by the Magyars around 1,500 years ago, they originated from Hungary and were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1960. They are a versatile hunting dog who will point, flush, and retrieve birds. Since they were originally bred to be a hunting companion who runs in the field all day, they are a very high energy breed requiring lots of exercise. Vizslas have a very soft temperament and enjoy cuddling with their humans – they are often described as Velcro Vizslas because they are always right next to you!

How did you feel going into the competition? Excited! This is like making it to the Super Bowl for dog people. When we received the letter that his entry made it in we were over the moon happy. They only allow 2,500 dogs so the entry is by a drawing. Dogs from all 50 states and 10 different countries competed at this show – we were the only dog from North Dakota this year.

What did it mean to have your dog place so highly? It was like a dream come true! Especially for his breeders who were able to be there to watch as well. I’m so honored to have such a beautiful dog from them to show at a competition like this.

What are your dog's favorite things to do? He loves birds and swimming! He was originally bred to be a hunting dog, so we train one night a week on birds from Spring to Fall. We also go out and hunt pheasant with both of our dogs in the Fall. He enjoys swimming at Rocket Dogs year round as well!

How do you prepare for a competition like that? Vizsla’s are a high energy breed so exercise is a big part of our daily routine and it helps keep him in shape. Lots of free running, swimming, and walks. We also train at the Fargo Moorhead Kennel Club on a weekly basis. He has been attending dog shows on the weekends since he was six months old so he is pretty used to the routine (his favorite treat is chicken!).

3 Dishes to Try at

ROSEWILD i

f we're spoiled with one thing locally, it's quality restaurants. All around the FM area, you can find great food to meet just about any craving. However, there are certain restaurants that deserve their own specific spotlight. Rosewild, the new restaurant located at the new Jasper Hotel in Downtown Fargo is one such restaurant. Our team was lucky enough to see Rosewild's Executive Chef Austin Covert in action and had a chance to try a couple of dishes that we think will make your taste buds elated.

Cucumber Salad Grilled cucumbers, confit potatoes, beat cured salmon, egg, dill Pulling from traditional Scandinavian roots with a fresh take, this cold salad is balanced by zesty lemon and dill mingling with savory beat cured salmon, slow cooked confit potatoes, fresh grilled cucumbers and hard boiled eggs.

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL

By Alexandre Cyusa Photo By Josiah Kopp

A YOUNG

Professional in Philanthropy Warm Greetings I hope you are enjoying the numerous summer activities surrounded by your beloved ones! This month I have the privilege to chat with Lady Marisa Pacella who grew up across five different states but considers the Fargo area home. She graduated from NDSU in 2019 with a degree in Hospitality Management and was the Student Body Vice President her senior year at NDSU. She currently works for NDSU’s Foundation as an Associate Director of Development for the College of Business. In her free time, she loves to read, see her friends and family, and try out all the new places to eat in the area! If you need a book recommendation or a docuseries to binge: she’s your lady!

Next time you meet her make sure to ask her why she loves Fargo! Cheers! - Cyusa Where do you call home? This is a question that always gives me pause when I am asked. I lived in five different states (Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Texas, and North Dakota) before I started high school in West Fargo! Moving from state to state as a kid opened my eyes to the vast array of thought, cultures, and influences in different parts of the United States. I’ve found it’s not necessarily where you’re at that makes a place home, but who you’re with. On that note, I would have to say I call North Dakota home not because I have lived here the longest but because my family and friends are here with me. What is the story of your passion for giving back to the community? I have tried to pinpoint the moment when I discovered my passion for service but it’s something that’s always been

54 | AUGUST 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

with me and held a place in my heart. However, I do remember when I knew I wanted to make a career out of that passion! As a senior in college, I had an internship with Sanford Health in their Public Affairs (now Community Relations) department, and it made me aware of what a career serving the community could look like. Without this internship, I never would have pursued opportunities in philanthropy! Why should young professionals care about philanthropy? I want the best for our community and I am sure you do too! It comes back to valuing it to the best of our ability and making it the best place for all of us. This applies from human services to education to our places of worship. We are a large piece of creating the change we want to see, and we can do that together through philanthropy. What are some misconceptions of the philanthropy industry? Whoa - where do I start?! Here is one I’d love to clarify: “I really want to give back to our community, but I just don’t have any disposable income.” Do not worry - you can give back in other ways! Philanthropy is not just about dollars, but also time. Even donating the items, you do not need anymore can mean a lot

to members of our community. For me, it is professional clothing! One example where you can donate is the Career Center at NDSU. They take donations of professional clothing so students can look sharp for their job interviews and presentations. You can find a way to give back that is meaningful to you and fits in your budget! Can you share some of the work you do in philanthropy? Of course! I absolutely love sharing all about it. My first job after graduation was at the United Way of CassClay on their Resource Development team. I feel so lucky to have begun my career in philanthropy at such a community-centric organization with an amazing team of people. Recently, I took the next step in my career with NDSU’s Foundation as an Associate Director of Development for the College of Business. It is my role to connect with donors and help them invest in the students of NDSU in a way that is meaningful to them. I am new to the role, but really enjoying the challenge of learning something new. How can other young professionals get involved? Oh, there are so many ways! My first starting place would be with your workplace because they usually have some form of community

involvement! Check with your HR team at work – is there a “fun committee” or “culture committee" you could speak with or join? Most companies have them in some form or another. You can organize a drive at your workplace or even find a way to donate professional services if applicable. Another suggestion is to find your passion and look for ways to get involved in the community. For example: if you are super passionate about reducing food insecurity in our area, volunteer at the Great Plains Food Bank or another food pantry in the area. With the Fargo-Moorhead community continuing to grow every day, there are opportunities to give back around every corner. What is your vision for the future of the Tri-College community? Well, if you are giving me the space to dream, I’ll take it! My experience as a student at NDSU was incredible and I wish that for every student that sets foot at any university. A crucial part of building that sense of belonging is not solely the university, but the surrounding community as well. My vision and hope for the area’s students are they see the Fargo-Moorhead community as one to call home even after graduation.

MEET THE

AllieMae Designs F

or the pet issue, we are all about dogs and wanted you to meet Alicia Brunette of AllieMae Designs! Her bandanas are getting noticed on all the pups in the community and we are obsessed with her three corgis!

Tell us a bit about yourself:

Tell us where your name came from?

I was born and raised in Fargo. I’ve tried leaving, but I always come back. I work at a bank during the day and most nights you can find me either doing dog things or race car things. My boyfriend and I run the Northern Corgis group where we put on play dates and fundraisers, most notably the Corgi Races that take place during the Fargo Food Truck Festival (August 14th this year). We also have a lightning sprint car which I race at local dirt tracks.

It’s simply my nickname and my middle name!

Describe what you create under AllieMae Designs? I mostly do dog (and some cat) bandanas. I dabble in bow ties and I’ve recently started selling vinyl stickers (some with snarky sayings) as well.

By Ashley Morken, Unglued Photos Provided By AllieMae Designs

56 | AUGUST 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

How did you get started with your business? I started making bandanas for our corgi, Pig, after realizing that most bandana places were selling ones only made for big dogs. I also struggled with keeping them tied nicely on her. So, I googled some things and went to work. There was a lot of trial and error, but I eventually figured it out. What's your most popular dog bandana? All of the sports teams are super popular. Holiday-themed ones are also a hit. I do a lot of personalized birthday bandanas too.

Tell us about your own pups! We have three corgis: Pig who is a 4-yearold tri-colored Pembroke, Bacon who is a 2-year-old blue merle Cardigan Corgi and Porkchop who just turned 1 and is a sable Pembroke. Porkchop was our quarantine puppy – since I was working from home we had to jump on the puppy trend. We bring our dogs almost everywhere with us and we even throw them their own birthday parties. Their Instagram is pigandbacon_nd – go follow them! What's the best thing about having corgis? They’re such weird dogs. They have this big dog personality in little bodies. What is your favorite thing about having your own business? Creative freedom and making people

happy. I’ve recently started seeing a lot of my work out in public so that’s super gratifying as well. What is the most challenging thing? Making things that don’t turn out initially and finding the willpower to try it again. What is a word that best describes you? Hmm that’s a tough one but I’d have to say introvert. I’m a shy person by nature, but having a small business and super social dogs are definitely helping me break out of my shell.

Where can people find your work? Unglued! And if you contact me on social media or email, I’ll try my hardest to make you exactly what you’re looking for. Social to stay in touch? Instagram: alliemae_designs and on Facebook: AllieMae Designs

What advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago? Do all of the things and don’t worry about what others think of you.
