ALL WE HAVE

ell, this is it, we've made it to the end of 2022. From meeting local artists (tattoo included) to nerding out together to exploring the community's paranormal activity, and, of course, food, food and more amazing food. There was so much more in between all of that, but when it comes down to what we really did together this year, it's that we had fun. Well, I had fun, and I hope that those of you reading along did too. In my first appearance in the Fargo Monthly magazine, in December of 2021, I introduced myself to the readers and talked about my love for discovering and being involved in the community. Twelve months later, as I have been able to watch the community grow from a whole new

perspective, I can still say that I still wholeheartedly love that, if not more now than then. Because ultimately, the more that goes on around FargoMoorhead, the more stories there are to tell; and Fargo Monthy wants to tell them.

Now, as far as my usual bit of reflection and advice I give on this short page, I'll say this: In our final issue of the year, I encourage you all to rest. I know, it's the holidays and we are always 'go, go, go,' but where you can, rest. You've been busy all year long, and you'll be busy next year and the year after. Find and enjoy your moments in between, all we have is time. Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!

Get your first look insideDrekker’s newest venture.

rom the minds and labors of Drekker Brewing Company, the longawaited Brewhalla concept will open its doors in early 2023. This newly built space, whose concept has been an ongoing project for almost six years, will bring food, shopping, events, lodging and, of course, more Drekker brew to the FM area. We were able to visit the Drekker-adjacent building that we’ve watched develop over the last year and get a peek behind Brewhalla’s doors.

“Once we knew this was something much bigger than what the brewery could hold we started dreaming and traveling. A lot. We visited food halls all over the country and Europe and the vision started taking shape. We took our needs and paired that with what we thought were the best concepts we’d seen and what would be best for the Fargo community. After that, things came together quickly and we started construction in the spring of 2021.“

18 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Brewhalla is a collection of ideas and dreams that the Drekker team wanted to bring to the community. To accomplish this, they have partnered with Kevin Bartram of MBA Development, a comprehensive Architecture and Interior Design firm, to help bring those to life. If you ask Mark Bjornstad, president of the brewery, Brewhalla is being brought to life by the “weirdos at Drekker Brewing!”

That really is the big question with the new Brewhalla. We know there’s going to be a market with food and shopping vendors, and we know about the event space and upperlevel hotel rooms… but really, what is it? Well, it's a conglomerate of everything the Fargo-Moorhead community does so well, in a new Drekkeresque space. Similar to some food halls around the country, it includes local shopping, some unique lodging, as well as multiple, variously sized venue spaces.

Located to the west of the Drekker building we know, the Brewhalla building overlooks the existing space with four floors. The top two will house the hotel rooms, the second to host the larger venue space, plus a few smaller areas for market goers to relax or small events/get-togethers to take place, and the first will be buzzing with the energy from the food and shopping market. Next time you’re on Main Street, near downtown Fargo, look north and you’ll spot the four-story, dark building.

The team has been researching how to bring Brewhalla to life since they built their current space in 2017, so to say this has been in the works for a while is an understatement.

19

“This

One of the most unique aspects of Brewhalla’s event space is that it can truly be designed to fit anyone or any type of event. There are two large event spaces designed for private events, as well as a mezzanine on the second floor where smaller groups or subgroups can host.

“This could be a wedding ceremony and reception in separate rooms for great flow or a fun social out on the mezzanine where you can look over the activity of the market,” Mark said. “The options are endless.”

Crowning the space, the hotel space is unique in its own right.

“Each room is designed with mural artwork and trinkets from a different beer label created by Drekker Brewing's artist, Punchgut,” Mark said.

Hotel guests can pick and choose add-ons from the main-level market to completely design their experience and stay.

“Maybe that's a four-pack of Drekker's newest release, a pint of amazing gelato from Duchessa or a craft box from Unglued,” Mark added.

The Brewhalla market will most certainly be the heart of the space. The bustling movement from the vendors and visitors will carry energy up through each floor as each level opens for a huge skylight. Since each floor overlooks the market, there is a constant flow of activity from the bottom up.

“We love spaces that have energy and connect people,” Mark said. “The open design of Brewhalla allows the vibe and energy to be shared across the different spaces and floors. Markets have such cool hustle and bustle with shopkeepers working, people shopping and diners talking and laughing. We wanted those elements to bleed through the building so that when you're at a birthday party in a mezzanine event space, you share that same electricity and don't have to create your own space. It's all one buzzing and fun hive with all sorts of different nooks and crannies.”

20 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
is what the first floor event space + bar (left) and the skylight above the market + terrace (right) will look like when Brewhalla is completed, and what we saw when we got a sneak peek this month!“

A unique aspect of the market is that it’s designed so that you visit it how you want to. Come for a few hours to shop and dine in with friends, swing by to pick up dinner on the go or have a working lunch in one of the mezzanine spaces!

While there can be a busyness in the market energy, the giant skylight opens up the space and allows natural light to fill the corners in a way that relieves some pressure rather than packing it on. The team wanted to make sure that the space felt open and spacious, offering “outdoor vibes year-round,” where, in our region, that’s not possible.

The team explored a lot all over the country and the world in order to create the space and fit it to the community. The market strategically incorporates a balance of savory and sweet food, an array of drinks and a variety of shopping to create different ways to experience Brewhalla.

“We visited food halls and other fun, weird spaces all over. Our favorites are located in New York, Milwaukee, Denver, Copenhagen,

Texas and Los Angeles. From there, we learned so much about placemaking, operations, facility design and the overall mix of different businesses. From those lessons, we looked at our needs at Drekker and what needs we thought we could meet for the community,” Mark said.

From their research, they chose what businesses would “best execute those concepts in Fargo.”

“We knew these people through years of partnerships and they all shared our values and vision for making Fargo a fun and awesome place. They got the concept right away and were all in for creating this unique and one-of-a-kind space,” Mark said.

With the market, the venues and the hotel, all of the levels in Brewhalla will be connected through the skylight, the market energy, fun art murals, graphics and installed experiences.

As they continue to support those small businesses and be engaged with the community, the team’s vision for Brewhalla is to also evolve, grow and change over time to create experiences in the new space.

An Ancestral way of artistic self-expression: Hairstyling

Happy Holidays!

During these festive days, when we are getting ready for the beginning of the New Year, I wanted to visit with someone who uses their talent in a myriad of ways but foremost aesthetically because it is paramount to look good during the holidays as we gather with our beloved ones.

I am fortunate to have met when I was getting my own haircut four years ago, Ms. Sharon Traylor. It is always hard to introduce someone else, therefore when I asked to succinctly describe herself, she said:

"I’m a barber, hair braider, loctician barber instructor, mother of four, grandmother, dog trainerand an artist. I’m passionate about self-healing fitness and the health of the mind, body and soul. I love nature and cultivating things—I'm very good at it. I am a straightforward nononsense woman."

Be sure to visit with her next you see her as she is a kind artful soul and the Red River Valley is fortunate to have Ms. Sharon call here her home.

Until next time:

Umwaka Mushya Muhire wa 2023!

- Cyusa

The place where I call home has only recently been admitted over the last five years. I’m originally from Chicago and had a strong pull to still belong there in a comforting way. But accomplishing so much here, along with the passing of my grandmother, Chicago began to feel not so much like home. Home is Moorhead and it feels like home.

showed me those things. Lessons learned back home were needed to make it to where I am now. The lessons learned here in Fargo were needed to maintain who I am today.

The story of my passion to do hair isn’t a passion to do hair—it’s a passion to create and be able to express and be artistic which I have been all my life. So, doing hair is just a limb from the tree of expression and creativity.

My journey began when I came into this work, to be honest, and it took almost all my life until now to realize that. As far as the growth and lessons learned, it happened slightly before I came to this region but flourished more and became more apparent while being here. Being removed from one environment to another which is drastically different,

This passion for creativity went from an idea for a hair show, which was a grand success that my business partner Brenna Fisher and I birthed back in 2020. We then decided to climb higher and open a shop.

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL
Photo
Where do you call home?
What is your journey of growth and what lessons did you learn before coming to Fargo?
What is the story of your passion for this ancestral art of taking care of one’s hair?
How did you convert a passion into a full-time business occupation?
40 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

The reason I feel people should learn more about other cultures through hairstyles is because it helps you to understand and it possibly brings people together by sharing and wearing different hairstyles. They could learn by attending classes asking questions and accepting it as an art and a form of expression.

When I think about it, the one thing that this area could benefit from that I liked in other cities would be inclusion and diversity, but I see that happening already. So I have hope for the growth of our FargoMoorhead community.

My vision for 2030 seems so far away but it is not. I would like to see men and women alike doing all kinds of hairstyles with different textures. Having stylists and barbers able to service anyone for any hair care they may need. My goals are to be teaching in the schools and having a few businesses and much more. I like to move quietly—so, to be continued.

Why should and how can people learn about other cultures through hairstyles?
What is one thing this area could benefit from which you liked in other cities you lived in?
What is your vision 2030? Where will you be and why?

Rocking The Night Away

LOCAL MUSICIANS DEDICATED A MEMORABLE NIGHT TO 90'S AND 2000'S MUSIC

ans of bands from the past will oftentimes spend hundreds of dollars to relive their glory days and enjoy a blast from the past. Groups such as Weezer, Linkin Park, Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance may not be as popular as they were a few decades ago, but they’ve certainly maintained a strong following. The 90s/00s Rock Night, hosted by Jade Presents, was held at the Sanctuary Events Center on November 12.

The event has become a popular mainstay event over the years, as many locals look forward to seeing the music they grew up listening to in a live setting for a low price. I spoke with several band members of groups Low Standards, The Sweater Band and more about their process with tribute performances, their journey through the pandemic and what motivates them to honor their star-studded lineup.

The aforementioned cult following doesn’t go unnoticed as several local bands come together to put on a show to celebrate the golden eras of these groups. While attendees may not have expected a performance comparable to the original bands from tribute cover groups, it’s safe to say that the crowd was impressed with each group’s passionate performance and energy brought to each set. As each group hit the stage, different sections of the crowd grew ecstatic for “their favorite set” that they originally came to see.

“People love the tribute shows. That's where you get the crowd's response and you feed off of the crowd's energy. My Chemical Romance announced its tour in 2018, but they canceled their shows for two years because of the pandemic. They still sold out most of their shows years later, so we decided to include them in a tribute night because there's clearly a demand for it,” said one band member.

The majority of bandmates that performed in the evening’s events have been participating in varying cover bands for over a decade. Performers are in different bands, with some in multiple groups even. With each band member in sync with their group, it was shocking to hear that they don’t practice

Covering A Variety

much together, as they’re all from different cities and states. “It’s usually not until the day of the show that we get together, practice and nail everything at sound check. But we’re all practicing on our own time as well,” Peterson said.

Each set was given approximately 45 minutes to perform, with brief 15-minute intermissions to give the audience a break, as well as allow the acts to transition. This allowed each act to play some back-catalog tracks for the dedicated fans and keep the performance fresh, as well as sprinkle the well-known hits throughout the setlist.

This not only satisfied the expectations of each audience member that purchased a ticket to see the hits tracks performed live, but it also showed some newer fans less popular tracks that they may not have discovered on their own.

Each set played an average of 15-20 songs, most of which were immediately recognized by large sections of the audience. One constant that became increasingly apparent throughout the set was the shared energy

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 48 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

between the band and the audience. As the audience grew louder, especially during the well-known, popular tracks, the band’s energy grew to put on a memorable show. There was a certain “give and take” behind the energy in the building that’s most often seen at small venue shows such as this one.

While most band members that were involved also have their own careers and original music being released through different facets and channels, they were all adamant about the benefits of tribute shows like this. While they get people out of their houses to join them in honoring classic bands such as Linkin Park, Blink-182 and more, they also connect local musicians that may not see each other outside of events like this due to scheduling.

“A lot of us are busy with our own music and it’s hard to see some of these other groups perform because we have our own gigs. Overall, this is a really great way of collaborating for all local musicians that share some of the same interests and favorite groups that a lot of us grew up on,” Peterson said. “The last time we did this show was in The Aquarium the day before the pandemic shutdown. Then, everything was on hold for a while.

We got to that level of asking ourselves, "What's the potential of what's going on here?” at that time. After the peak of the pandemic, we did the next tribute show at Fargo Brewing Company, and it sold out so quickly that our friends and family couldn't even get tickets. We were all shocked because the show wouldn’t have even fit in many other venues around here.”

Many of these official bands being covered are likely to never play again. Attending events like this not only allows a specific era of music to be showcased and revisited live once again, but it also allows local musicians to be discovered and supported doing what they love.

Keep an eye out for future performances from any of these up-and-coming bands, as well as the next concerts coming from Jade Presents!

jadepresents.com

“EVERY TIME WE DO THESE, EACH BAND BRINGS A DIFFERENT VIBE TO THE TABLE. THE GREEN DAY CROWD IN THE PAST IS DIFFERENT FROM THE WEEZER CROWD THAT WE'RE BRINGING IN TONIGHT, AND BOTH OF THOSE ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE OFFSPRING CROWD. WE ALWAYS TRY TO PICK THE BANDS THAT HAVE A HUGE DRAW AND SPECIFIC GROUP OF PEOPLE, AND THEN HAVE THEM ALL COME TO ENJOY THE MUSIC AT THE SAME TIME. THAT’S PRETTY MUCH THE GOAL.”

A Look Inside the Unpublished Works of an Artist

look inside any artist's sketchbook is a treat, but even more so with Brooks, as her creative process lends her to often discarding preliminary sketches after the project has come to completion. Nonetheless, we dug into some of her sketchbooks, ready for a glimpse inside her world.

Typically, Brooks spends some time researching and coming up with a few different concepts that she wants to incorporate together. In this piece, for example, she knew that she wanted to incorporate typography, while also including the quokka. From there, Brooks plans it out in her head and then

starts the sketching process. "I don't actually go through a whole bunch of sketches," she said. "Usually, by the time I'm ready to put pencil to paper, it's already kind of conceptualized."

Additionally, in order for Brooks to ensure the piece involves all of the ideas and components she wants, she will write down a list of every item she wants to include, or if she is working with a client, she will keep a list of everything they want to be incorporated into the piece. Again, for Brooks, she prefers a game plan and a full concept in place before the pen touches the paper.

with Emily Brooks

"This is one of the rare chalking sketches that I've actually held on to because they get so beat up by the time I'm done using them, as you can tell with all of the chalk that is all over this," said artist Emily Brooks as she brushed some of the remnant chalk dust off the paper. The quokka, known as the happiest animal in the world, became the subject of this piece, inspired by Brook's travels to Australia, the region where this extremely rare animal is native.

51

The sketch you see here is for a mural Brooks completed earlier in 2022 at Reese & Riley's Bistro Bar in Moorhead for their new event space called Reed's. You'll notice that the sketch is conceptualized "backward," because the mural has to be painted on the glass from the inside in order to be viewed through the glass on the outside. The sketches that Brooks gives to her clients are usually really rough outlines. "I tell them that ahead of time—I'm not going to pour all of my time into just the sketch; I want to do that for the final piece."

Brooks loves challenging herself by learning new techniques and incorporating new mediums into her work. The Reed's Events logo, for example, Brooks used both digital and handdrawn means to create the design. One of her end strategies, though, is to paint and hand-draw works that can be made into digital pieces as it offers more ways for the piece to be enjoyed in other printed mediums, like her colorful North Dakota drawing, which was later made into a sticker. The other side of that coin is to create works for the community to enjoy; her angel wings creation at Silver Lining Creamery is a great example.

"I love to see the way people interact with my work," Brooks said. "It just makes me so excited when I see [my work] pop up in like someone's profile picture or in a magazine because it's giving me a visual of how people are interacting with it."

For Brooks, just the thought of her work being in someone's day-to-day life and giving them some joy and emotion is what it's all about. "If it adds to their day in some way, that makes me so happy," she said.

This 'North Dakota' creation is a real treat; not only did Brooks create this design in both hand-drawn and digital means, but she also collaborated with her husband Bill, who is a world-traveling geographer. The end goal for this design was to create a magnet. Brooks' process began with sketching out the typography, then creating a digital version of that. Then she and Bill collaborated on the mapping portion of the design. Once the design was fully digital, recoloring it was an easy process (programs like Illustrator have a "recolor" option that allow the user to recolor an entire design with any given color palette). Brooks inevitably settled on green, as she felt it fit the best, plus it's Bill's favorite color. The final design is now available in a variety of mediums, from t-shirts and sweatshirts to stickers.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 52 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

This rough sketch was for a large mural Brooks created for the Nines in Detroit Lakes, which was installed on the back of their store. Although not the final version, this was the final sketch Brooks made for the project, but right before the installation began, the owner decided on Monarch butterfly wings rather than angel wings, so the final mural design evolved from this final sketch. "Monarchs are such a [big] part of this area," she said. "I love the way it ended up turning out." To see the installation, you can visit the Nines in Detroit Lakes or see it on Brooks' Instagram @taeamade.

New ideas and concepts are constantly floating into Brooks' mind, yet her goal is to allow more space and time to develop those ideas. "It's one reason why I kind of want to start sketching more," she said. "I'm trying to carve out more time in my life to just play around with art a little bit, because usually, I've been so busy with community involvements and my family that when I work, it's very focused. So when I work, I get in, I get the project done and then I have to get back to my life. I'm trying to carve out some time to just play and explore and learn the digital side of art as well."

Flipping through a few of her other stacks of sketches, Brooks mentioned her love of drawing birds and having taken birdwatching classes, which I had no idea was even something that was offered. Essentially, the classes enable students to better observe birds and identify their species through characteristics like markings and size. Brooks simply draws what she loves, which is something I have no doubt every artist can relate to.

"We love maps," Brooks said, as Bill introduced his field of work of geography. Maps heavily influence both Bill and Emily's lives and make traveling across the world especially unique. This sketch is of a photo Brooks took of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and another of the Sainte Chapelle. She doesn't necessarily have a set order for when or when not to sketch, or what or what not to sketch; her mind is open to anything, and if something catches her attention, she will sketch it. And in a place like France, inspiring views are around every corner.

The last sketch is one of my personal favorites, because it's a peek into the yesteryears of Brooks' life in art. This one was sketched while she was in high school, the signature showing her maiden name before FargoMoorhead knew her as Emily Brooks. This drawing is why I started this "What's in My Sketchbook?" series, because it sheds a spotlight on drawings that too often are left forgotten in a stack of old notebooks. Then, when an artist begins to publish works within the community and becomes a local celebrity, the works of their early life become even more fascinating.

For Emily Brooks, she loves it all. She loves to get her hands dirty and go all out on industrial, gritty-urban-graffiti style work, and she also loves the delicate and simple—both are truly remarkable, and I think I speak for the whole Fargo-Moorhead community when I say we can't wait to see what she will create next.

To learn more about Emily Brooks and her work, visit taeamade.com or find her on Instagram @taeamade

What was your experience like competing at the NCAA Championships?

It was a lot of fun, honestly. It was surreal. They really have a worldclass facility there. To be able to run in an environment like that with some of the best athletes in the world was awesome.

Did you get a chance to explore or do things around the area?

Obviously, the main focus is to run the 4x400m relay. But, we stayed through the week in case we made the finals. We didn't make the finals so we had a few days to kind of enjoy the Oregon area. We went on the sand dunes one day and drove around on an ATV. That was a lot of fun. We got to take a peek at the ocean. We were really able to just soak it all in. It was a lot of fun.

What has getting a taste of that done for your group's mindset heading into the season?

It's definitely a goal to get back. You look back on the season and see all the things that went right along the way to get to the biggest stage. I'm just hoping to repeat those things and improve. It would be awesome to get back.

What are some of your other goals heading into the season?

I'd really like to improve on my 800m. It's probably my best race and I'd like to dip into the 1:47 range. That has been a goal since last year and didn't quite get there at the end of the year. But it's a goal to do it this year.

Is there anything you do differently this offseason to help you get there?

Yeah, I increased the mileage a little bit more this summer. I wasn't really used to it and had a couple of 10-mile runs. But you get used to them. And when you know it's for improvement, it becomes a little easier and a little more fun to do.

What are you most looking forward to about the season?

Probably just running with the team. And I'm not just talking about relays, but also the encouragement that happens in practice. Even though there are mostly individual events, it's such a team sport. Everybody is there cheering you on which is a lot of fun. I enjoy cheering on my teammates as well and seeing them succeed.

What are some of your passions outside of track and field?

I like to hunt fish. I also really enjoy different sports like basketball. I watch a lot of basketball. March Madness is one of the best times of the year. I also think college football is always very fun.

Do you have any professional postgraduate plans yet?

As of right now, I plan to go back and help my dad and brother on the farm.

Nell Graham

What's your major?

So, it's technically business administration but I take tri-college classes at MSUM for speech-language pathology.

I want to help people with language and fluency disorders gain their language so that they can communicate normally.

What makes you want to do that?

I've always wanted to help people and I love interacting with people. Both my mom and my sister have hearing loss. So, it's kind of appealing to me that I can help people like them in the future.

So, do you know ASL?

No, not yet, but I want to learn it so badly.

What other passions do you have outside of Track & Field?

I love hanging out with my friends. I like to watch a lot of Netflix and TV. My parents are in Knoxville, Tennessee right by the Smoky Mountains. So, I love going hiking and just kind of

doing anything outdoorsy. I love to travel and I love watching track.

I didn't think you were from Tennessee.

I'm not. I'm from near Rochester, Minnesota. My parents moved to Knoxville right after I graduated high school. I love going to the University of Tennessee football games when I visit them. SEC football is so much fun to watch.

What are your goals for this season?

I think the biggest goal would be obviously our team conference championship. That's the main goal. And then, our 4x400 relay team really wants to be able to qualify for regionals and run a time under 3:40. That would be awesome. I just want to help the team out in as many ways as possible.

Last year, you came super close in the 400 meters at the conference championships, taking second in the indoor and outdoor. Is that something you have your sights set on heading into this season?

Yes, that would be awesome. I do the heptathlon, starting last year, as well so that is kind of a hard double, but I know that I'm capable of running a good time.

Are there any events in the heptathlon that you hadn't done before coming in last year?

I really hadn't ever jumped the high jump or the long jump. I've never really done shotput or javelin.

Do you feel like you have a stronger grasp heading into some of those events heading into this season?

Yes. I've been practicing all fall and with our new multi-coach, Jackson Schepp. We've been working on a lot of techniques. At the end of last year, I was excited to get back to working at a lot of them because I knew I had a lot of things I could improve on.

When did you first fall in love with track?

When I was in elementary school, we had to run the mile and when we did,

I beat all of the boys. I thought it was so cool and it just made me want to run. I love track, but I love the team even more. It's so fun to come here every day with my best friends and work towards a common goal.

Is the social aspect of track one of your favorite parts?

Yes, I love getting to meet new people. And I think the opportunities that track has brought to me are really cool. I get to go all around the country with my best friends and compete at these insane meets and I get to see a bunch of like new places.

So what are you most looking forward to this season?

Trying to win conference again. It wasn't fun to lose last year. So, hopefully, we can bring back the conference title this year. Other than that, just getting to compete and hopefully improving my times and just enjoying my last few years of track.

A Home Equipped for a New Generation of Rising Stars

into a home—until now. Meet Brian and Elisa Williams, a family who made basketball a central part of their home life—literally. Now, one of the main purposes of Fargo's Parade of Homes

home tours, and this was exactly how the Williams got connected with Benjamin Custom Homes for this incredibly unique home design. Initially, BCH had a completely different design

Starting with a Vision

The design vision for the home was contemporary mixed with traditional

elegance. Elisa wanted a consistent, neutral palette throughout the entire home and a touch of sparkle. The sport court itself was Brian's baby; he played basketball in college and then played professionally in Europe in the 90s, now sharing that passion with their son. "I'm so thankful the kids will also have a great place to stay active during the colder months," Elisa said.

Brian had the court measurements precisely detailed to keep true basketball regulation sizes for him and their son to have the best practicing environment. The court floor is professional level as well. It was important for the family to be able to see the court throughout the home. To accommodate this, there are viewing areas in the pantry, sunroom and full wall in the basement recreation room.

Another vision for Elisa was to achieve as many details in the home as possible while staying within budget. "I adore things like wall paneling, crown molding and sconces," she said. "I just asked that [BCH] help me find areas where I could maybe save to get some of those extra details in other spots."

Amenities & Features

Although impressive on its own, the professional-grade basketball court with maple hardwood is not the only noteworthy feature of this home. Other amenities include a pond lot in River's Bend, a finished four-stall garage, court viewing areas throughout the home, a large kitchen, varied ceiling heights, trim detail work throughout the entire home, a large coffered ceiling, a built-in fireplace surround, custom built cabinets throughout the home,

basement wet bar, sunroom with elevated viewing, hydronic heat, custom tilework, quartz countertops throughout the home, three washer and dryer units and a technology package throughout the home.

A Full Walkthrough

Though she worked together with Mel Anderson and BCH, Elisa took the lead on most of the overall design direction within the home. "Over the last 20 years we've lived in a lot of homes and in each, I would catalog what I wish I had done differently for it to be more functional for us as well as the things I really liked," Elisa said. "So, I was super particular about what we wanted. I'm also one of those quirky people who like to map out floor plans on graph paper, so I came to them with all of my ideas on what we wanted and how I'd like the layout [to be]. They incorporated their expertise into my initial ideas to make us an amazing home!"

Every nook and cranny of this home was strategically planned with the Williams' lifestyle in mind. As you observe each space, notice the beautiful molding, trim and detail work that gives this home a unique flare, while maintaining the Williams' budget.

"Mel and Ben exceeded our expectations in their integrity and professionalism and in just being wonderful people," the Williamses said. "During the building process, so many things came up and they were great at communicating and doing everything they could as quickly as possible to fix any challenges that came up. We still feel absolutely comfortable going to them with any questions we have and know that they will remain involved."

Kitchen & Dining

There is a linear arrangement between the kitchen, dining area and living room. The space is approximately 40 feet by 22 feet long. "All of the other homes we've been in have had the dining room off to the side of the kitchen and we found that we really didn't end up using that space as much as we would like," Elisa said. "We had seen this linear arrangement a few times and as we suspected, we use the dining room table so much more

since it is right between the kitchen and living room!" There is a beautiful 12-footlong island in the kitchen that is perfect for everyone to hang out around. The colors throughout are very neutral with cream walls, trim and cabinets as well as some accent cabinets that are black. All countertops are white quartz with subtle gray/black marbling and the kitchen backsplash is a marble-style tile.

Living Area, Basement & Court

The main living area has beautiful coffered ceilings that take the 10-foot ceilings up to 12 feet, and has paneled woodwork around the fireplace and windows. There are black benches with drawers beside the fireplace and stained wood floating shelves above those, as well as marble chevron tile around the fireplace. All flooring throughout this area is a rich brown, wide-plank flooring.

The basement has a wide open area that mirrors the upstairs. A wall of windows provides the perfect viewing of the basketball court, which is complete with a light maple hardwood flooring and complete with blue and gray accents and boundary lines. The basement provides a little more drama than the upstairs, with the TV wall being all black with backlit sconces as well as black cabinets and large pendant lights in the bar area.

Master Bed & Bath

The master bedroom flows into a master bath that has tons of gorgeous black cabinets, a stand-alone tub with a wood paneling surround and a spacious tiled shower. The neutral color palette is carried throughout both spaces for a seamless aesthetic.

Reflecting on the Finished Product

"Although we came to the house all the time during the building process, walking through the first time after it was totally cleaned out and ready to go just gave such a feeling of awe," said the Williamses. It was a sigh of relief and joy as all the years

of playing around with floor plans and designs for their dream home finally came to fruition. "We still feel that way now," they said. "We've been in the home for approximately nine months and frequently one of us will just stop and say, 'I love this house!' It's gorgeous, super comfortable, homey and so functional for us."

Melanie Iverson, Mosaic Interior Design

First, we have a basement remodel project by Melanie Iverson of Mosaic Interior Design. The project featured a home theater and bar area for the ideal holiday or sports day gathering place. She also had a hand in remodeling and staging this downtown Fargo condo at the historic Ford Building at 505 Broadway. This condo offered the grandest views of downtown while offering an industrial yet modern feel from the historic building. The 2,787 squarefoot space boasted a $1.4M price tag and included two balconies and a four-stall garage.

Iverson is a key player in the Fargo-Moorhead community, in both the interior design world and the business world as a whole. In 2022, she founded the Mosaic District and also became the Executive Director of Ladyboss and Lotus Midwest.

Linda Birmingham, dw2

It's always a special treat when I get to feature a home interior designed by Linda Birmingham and her dw2 team. This south Fargo home project was titled, "Contemporary Meets Classic" in Design & Living's 2022 Summer Lakes issue—and for good reason. The clean, neutral tones of the surfaces, upholstery and art give a very classic, timeless feel, while also maintaining a contemporary mood with the wood tones. And the lighting! We can't forget the lighting, where Birmingham's expertise and creativity especially shine.

We also featured Kevin and Jean Moug's home on Pelican Lake, another breathtaking project by Birmingham. "Light and airy with a beachy feel" was the goal for the Mougs, and dw2 came through, offering a final result that could only be described as a grand view with beach hues. Again, Birmingham kicked ass with the lighting design, and the natural goldenhour sunlight from across the lake only adds to the ambiance. The lasting impression is that when you stepped foot inside, you didn't have to leave the beach to do it.

Mevold Studios x BuildersCentury

Nestled on the edge of Detroit Lake is a home, and yet "home" doesn't do it justice. This place is art for dwelling, a place for epic summer parties. You may recognize this place, as it was featured on the cover of Design & Living's 2022 Summer Lakes Issue. Properly titled "The Entertainer's Paradise," this home is an architectural masterpiece, thanks to the genius of both Mevold Studios and Century Builders.

"Modern, warm and timeless—yet approachable." That was what homeowners Tyler and Melissa Brandt wanted to achieve in the final design of this home, and personally, I think their goal was exceeded. Boasting amenities like 18' ceilings, a threesided fireplace, a golf simulator, an outdoor kitchen and bar, a rooftop balcony, bars in both main and lower levels and much more, I stand by my claim that this is the Piazza del Duomo of Lake Homes.

Benjamin Custom Homes

Wrapping up our best-of home features is the Parade of Homes Fall 2022 feature home by Benjamin Custom Homes. Husband and wife duo Ben and Mel Anderson worked together to make this modern, Tudor-style, transitional-modern home in just 24 weeks. Earlier in 2022, Mel was featured in Design & Living's The People Issue and continues to be a top-tier designer in the community.

The home was staged by the amazing Curated by Trever Hill, enhancing the life and charm throughout the home. Some of the features of this home included a large four-stall garage, a Costco grocery door to the walk-in pantry from the garage, custom cabinetry, quartz countertops and backsplash, vaulted ceiling in the dining room with beams, custom fireplace, built-in shelving, main floor office with french doors, open staircase, second-floor master bedroom and bathroom with open tile shower, free-standing bathtub, soapstone countertops and much more.

Chef's Choice Chef's Choice

Our Nova Cheeseburger, along with the perfect bun and calculated grind of beef, make the burger great. We add our beer cheese queso and caramelized onions and it completes the equation to make the perfect burger.

Q: Where are you from? Does that have any influence on your career in the industry?

A: Born and raised in Fargo; it's a huge influence. Everything I do is to add to my community and help make it not only a great destination for travelers but a great place to live. My mission is to add things we can't necessarily find in Fargo already.

Q: How did you learn to cook?

A: I played around with what was in the fridge when I was younger, but mostly it was on the job. I've been a full-time cook since high school.

Q: What degree or certifications do you have, and when and where did you receive those?

A: I have a Culinary Certificate from MSCTC of Moorhead that I received in 2004.

Q: How did you start your current businesses?

A: In the summer of 2014, I did a long table farm dinner with a touring group called Outstanding in the Field. It was at that event I officially met Nikki Berglund (my now business partner) through a mutual friend. Nikki enjoyed the farm dinner so much that we partnered up to transform Luna Coffee (which she had purchased earlier that year) into the

restaurant it is today. Fast forward eight years and many ideas later we have Sol Ave. Kitchen, the recently opened Nova Eatery at Fargo Brewing Company, and three new concepts coming in the new year at the new Drekker Brewing build.

Q: Do you have unique education, background or mentor experience that helped you to where you are now?

A: I've been cooking in the industry since I was 14. Every job I've had, and all of the people I have encountered, have added to my experience and lent me a valuable education. I've always been obsessed with cookbooks and following other restaurants around the world. When you get to visit some of these different restaurants they really get your brain working.

Q: What dishes/foods/cooking styles do you specialize in?

A: We really are produce and seasonaldriven overall—whatever the farmers drop off at the back door. In general, all of the dishes, at any of our restaurants, are dishes we would like to eat. We have been moving more casual in our restaurants while still maintaining our mission towards a unique, thoughtful and heavy focus on quality. Really, really good, everyday food.

Q: In your opinion, what makes a great meal? How do you try to bring that to people?

A: All the flavors must make sense together. It's finding the right equation of familiarity and creativity with attention to quality and intention. It's also about long-standing relationships with purveyors and farmers. At Nova Eatery, for instance, we decided to put a burger on the menu. It's approachable, it's easy. But, we want you to have the best burger as possible so we select the softest and tastiest bun. We source the best possible locally and responsibly raised beef with the perfect ratio of cuts to yield the perfect in-house grind. It seems basic but the where and how are what make a great meal.

Q: What would you say drives you as a chef?

A: Honestly, it's getting to express my creativity and display it in every dish we put out. I want to create positive and inspiring experiences for everyone in any of our spaces and that's including our entire team. It's just as important to nurture and collaborate with our team and friends in the industry. So, simply put, I suppose relationships drive me as a chef.

Meet Dale Rousseau of Greenbush Woods, Moorhead's Local Toy Maker

lthough woodworking has always been a part of his life, Dale Rosseau was a builder of a different kind; from California to Oklahoma to Pennslyvania and even Wyoming, he has traveled (and built) many roads across the US, having worked many years in both construction and engineering.

Even though those days have passed, his life in construction and engineering still takes shape in a new endeavor: Greenbush Woods. From bulldozers and cranes to trucks and loaders, Dale's life on the road comes to life through his work today.

86 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

However, his first wooden toys—or apparel, rather—were elastic wooden ties that he began making when his woodworking endeavor began about 15 years ago. "I started making these [first], and I went to a couple of craft fairs with just these ties," he laughed. "I sold a few, but not a lot."

At the time, wooden toymaking was simply a pastime hobby for Dale, who would enjoy

bringing his work to craft shows periodically and working on other wood projects with his brother, who specializes in building furniture. Dale's only goal then was to sell enough toys so that he could buy more wood to make more.

And although he too enjoys building other wood projects like shelving, toys are what interest Dale the most, especially anything with wheels.

88 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
Before making toys, Dale made elastic wooden ties.

The first step to making a toy is selecting your wood. Dale likes to use mostly pine, as it's light and cost-efficient—but also enjoys using hardwoods like walnut and cherry for other special projects.

Next, it's time for cutting the blocks of wood and shaping them with a router. Dale uses templates to follow, so he can achieve consistent cuts, shapes and results each time—and create a more efficient workflow; after all, Santa doesn't build all his toys overnight!

Dale holding one of the raw pieces to a collectible, showing the before and after comparison to this bulldozer collectible

For assembly, he opts to use wood glue and sometimes pin nailers for a clean,

Efficiency and smooth workflow is the name of the game for Dale; he uses a custom set-up of three Craftsman table saws bolted together, which for some of his best-selling toys, allows him to produce as many as 250 in a week—it's the perfect balance of high production without compromising quality.

92 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

He brought me over to his storage shed where he keeps all his cut-out pieces neatly organized in large plastic bins, all of them ready to be pieced together like "a big jigsaw puzzle," as he describes. Some of his favorite pieces were stored here, which he lifted out of their bins as he proudly showed me the diversity of his work—yet these particular items should have been no surprise.

"I'm very construction-oriented, so I make a lot of construction [toys]," Dale said, holding up a couple of his favorite pieces, all made of hardwoods. He categorizes these as bookshelf toys, made to be adult collectibles rather than toys for children.

The bestseller of his hardwood collectibles is his bulldozer, which is unlike any hardwood machinery collectible you've seen before. Every detail is finely considered, and the hardwood tones really make for a classic look—no doubt a great conversation piece for any collector.

The best-sellers of his toys are the dump truck and the loaders, though all of his toys are equally as detailed and finely constructed, perfect for any youngster's Christmas.

The tractor/trailer combo is a great option for kids who like to connect pieces and haul things around in—imagination is limitless. Some of my personal favorites were the airplanes and helicopters, further illustrating Dale's expansive skillset for building just about anything that interests him.

By now you're probably thinking, "I love these, where can I purchase his toys?"

Greenbush Woods can be found primarily at craft shows across Fargo-Moorhead and the Red River Valley, especially right now leading up to the holidays.

Many of the cars, trucks and trains you see in this story are a part of his high-production lineup of toys. However, if you have a special request for a toy, you can contact Dale at greenbushwoods@gmail.com or by visiting greenbushwoods.com

Business is always booming in our region. Here are just a few of the happening that you should know about.

måske

I ’m not sure if there’s anything cozier than having a big, thick weaving on your walls, or anything better than embroidered snarky sayings in a hoop. It turns out Steph Kleeman-Olson just so happens to be crafting up both for you! It’s been super cool to see her work evolve in the fiber arts world and as she grows through some pretty cool commissions around the area. Read on to find out more about the maker behind måske!

Tell us a bit about yourself!

My name is Steph and I grew up, and still live, in the Fargo-Moorhead area. I have a full-time job aside from my business, and making things is always something I’ve done for fun. It’s a great way to chill out. I have two rather large dogs, a basset hound (Humphrey) and a Bernese mountain dog (Bosco), and I also have all the plants. Baking is another hobby of mine. I always make far too much and make sure to pawn it off on friends, family or coworkers.

Describe what type of products you make under måske.

I fall well into the category of fiber arts. Mainly I focus on weaving and hand embroidery, but I have dipped my toe into macrame, knitting and cross stitching. Fiber is my main medium, though. The weavings I make are wall hangings mostly, and as for hand embroidery, I do pretty much everything. Mostly wall hangings/hoops, but I also stitch on hand towels, shirts, bags, hats—anything that I can pull a needle through.

Tell us how you got started with a handmade business.

You do all kinds of craft! What has been your favorite? And which has been your most consistent?

My overall favorite was when, after having a spectacularly failed attempt at learning how to do a punch needle a few years ago, I picked it up again earlier this year and suddenly, it clicked. I don’t know where I went wrong the first time, but now I absolutely love punch needles. I’ve made quite a few pieces since I figured out how to make it work.

The most consistent would definitely be embroidery. When I was a kid, I would constantly hand stitch up holes in my clothing, and to this day, I still mend things. I now just happen to make funky pieces that people enjoy hanging on their walls as well.

Where do you get your inspiration for what you create?

I have this ongoing list on my phone that is just quotes I hear, jokes/puns I find, silly things my friends say. Most of these things end up as finished embroidered pieces. I also find myself looking at Pinterest a lot, and saving absolutely anything that even remotely interests me for future pieces.

I took a class at Unglued a while back— beginner’s weaving. I really enjoyed it and got so into it that I eventually realized I had too many pieces to keep for myself (or give to my mom). I started out just selling my weavings and then rediscovered my love of embroidery, and now it’s been quite a few years. I still have that first piece that I made in that weaving class, too.

As for weaving, I love to just grab a bunch of random colors of yarn and see what works. Usually what happens is I’ll make two or three pieces out of the same color palette. The yarn itself is usually what inspires me, it’s easy to just pull a bunch out and pile them up and see what works together.

MEET THE
100 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

What is your personal favorite item you've crafted so far?

I made a small hoop about four years ago. It was an oval with silver thread on black fabric. It reads, “Be like a star, distant and dying.” with various metallic stars scattered in the background. My grandmother-in-law had come over to check out our house, as we had just moved in a few months before. I had just hung this piece up on the wall. As we were giving her the grand tour, she stopped to read it and laughed for a solid minute. I’ve treasured that piece, and that reaction, ever since.

You also have taught a lot and shared your handcrafted skills. What do you enjoy about teaching?

Back when I was a starry-eyed youth, I had this grand goal of being a college professor. Once I got to college I realized that doing that full-time was definitely not something my introverted self could handle. I love teaching in small doses. The first class I taught was four people total, two of which were my mom and her friend, and knowing the people you’re teaching makes it easier to be yourself. My favorite thing is running into people well after the class who say, “I took your class last year and now embroidery is my new hobby and I’ve made so many pieces!” That’s what keeps me coming back to teaching, it just makes me feel so good knowing that I’ve inspired someone in that way.

What is something people might find surprising about fiber arts?

There is quite a rift between those that use man-made fibers (acrylic, for example) and those that only use “natural” fibers (only natural dyes, etc.). I can understand the desire to use the “nicer” stuff for things you’ll be wearing, like using wool to make a scarf, but if you’re making a wall hanging, no one is going to be wearing that. Use acrylic yarn! It’s cheaper, there are definitely more color options and there are so many options out there that feel just as nice as the shorn-offthe-sheep stuff.

What is one craft you haven't really dabbled in yet that you want to try some day?

Stained glass. I have a few pieces, and I’ve always loved the way they scatter the light.

I am a little afraid to try it, as you’re literally working with something that could cut you or burn you, but the outcome is so lovely. I’d really like to try it.

What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?

I love having people that have bought my items reach out to me. Recently I’ve had a couple of different people reach out after buying to show me where they placed their piece and how much they absolutely love it, and that makes me feel great. Sometimes I wonder where my pieces end up, who bought them and what they think about it. Getting to actually find all that out is pretty neat.

What is the most challenging thing?

Making the pieces themselves. I have about a million ideas, but there’s no way to make them all. Having to figure out what will work the best, will someone somewhere actually like this color palette? Is this weird saying or quote way to niche? Am I the only one that gets this? Sometimes I just get in over my head questioning what I’m working on. The amount of half-started pieces I have just around the house is kind of getting ridiculous.

Where can people find your work?

I sell at Unglued! I also do craft shows from time to time.

Website/social to stay in touch: I post some of my work on my personal Instagram (along with my dogs, so many dog photos): @alwaysawkwardly

I take on commissions via Instagram or email: maskehandmade@gmail.com

Up & Coming Entrepreneur

When people embark on a new entrepreneurial adventure, no two paths are the same. Each trailblazer goes at their own pace with different circumstances and obstacles to overcome. We talked to a variety of upand-coming entrepreneurs, each with their own unique story to tell.

Chase Evert is a rising photographer with his personal brand, Chase Chapters. In our discussion, Evert took time to dive into what roped him into the world of photography, some of his biggest inspirations and mentors over the years and much more!

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 110 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Evert first became interested in photography when he started taking photos on a flip phone as a child. “I started taking photos as a kid with a Motorola Razor flip phone. My mom was a real estate agent, and I can remember laying on the floor during slow open houses, snapping photos of the ceiling and the kitchen decals. Photos were just something I did to pass the time. For years they only ever lived on my phone,” Evert said.

“It wasn’t until my junior year, when my high school offered a digital photography course that I enrolled in to share my work. Our teacher showed us the basics of editing software and allowed us to rent these banged-up Canon Rebels for a full semester. I remember the rush of panic seeing Photoshop for the first time. This was a tool I imagined only Hollywood professionals used for celebrities for magazine and movie posters.”

After the course introduction, Evert couldn’t get enough of his passion project. Soon after, he purchased his own Canon Rebel and carried it with him everywhere he went. He photographed pets, family holidays, downtown Fargo and anything else that caught his attention. Evert would then post content to Instagram, Tumblr, VSCO and other social media platforms for others to see and follow.

Over summer break in 2019, Evert concluded that his future educational and career path wasn’t in line with his passions. “During college, I landed a part-time position in a back-end processing department of a financial institution. After a year of having my mornings filled with client work and my evenings eaten up by this job, they offered me a full-time position. I realized taking this position, for me, would be planning the rest of my life,” Evert said.

“I’d get comfortable. But I liked having this flexibility and the option to work on my own goals instead of just meeting deadlines for a manager. A month before, I had my most successful month in my photography business, making more after taxes than I did in my current position, so knowing I might not get the opportunity again, I decided to turn down the offer and jump head first into photography.”

“I decided to open a print store that would dropship my work across the globe. Every couple of weeks, a check, however small, dropped into my bank account. I moved back to Moorhead in the winter of 2021 and entered the photo from my first print sale into an Art Syndicate show. Through that, I found the burgeoning art community here in town. I started selling face-to-face at markets, expanding my collection and entering competitions. I made it into a few physical magazines and even won the cover slot for one,” Evert said.

“I learned, much to my parent's dismay, I could make this work. I went the reverse route for most photographers. I sold physical prints first and then expanded into client shoots. I went back to my roots and shot real estate as the market opened back up, now equipped with a professional-grade camera, and found a

great group of clients who trust me with their photos. Now, in 2022, a year after deciding this was my path, I’ve worked with agents, builders, cabinet makers and interior designers. I’ve expanded my lens collection, bought a drone and even opened my very own limited-edition print store where I get to add my signature to each print before it goes out.”

Evert’s next steps include expanding his physical work into stores, generating more passive-income streams and growing his list of architecture-focused clients. While he has many more obstacles to overcome and goals to achieve, Evert has already collected a wealth of knowledge along his path. Here are some of his biggest tips for readers interested in pursuing their passion as well.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 112 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
Some of Chase Evert’s work

Just start.

It’s tried and true advice. In any field, creative or corporate, if you want it, you’ve got to start. You’ll think that nothing you’re doing is right. That’s alright, and frankly, entirely natural. Failure is a bigger part of the process than success. It’s like the iceberg metaphor, what the world sees is only the product of hours of practice, failed attempts and setbacks. I’ve sold out of certain photo print drops and also failed to sell even one from others. You’ll be stuck without the answer to “What If…” until you try. And if that “What If” ends in failure, cross it off the list and try something new.

Grow better together.

Being an entrepreneur feels incredibly isolating. You’re pulling things into the real world from ideas that live only in your head. When you explain lofty goals to people in your life, you're often met with blank stares or worry. Finding the people who you can ask questions to and who can guide you through rough waters are important to fight burnout. When I first started, I was holding all of my ideas in my head, trying to make sense of what I wanted from my business. It wasn’t until I found the FM art community that I learned how powerful sharing ideas is. Having a support network gives you a foundation in a business where the goalpost is always shifting.

Diversify

COVID showed us that entire markets can shut down. Having multiple income streams not only stabilizes your profits, but it guarantees some form of revenue even in the face of a total market shutdown. It’s not about finding as many income streams as possible, it’s about finding the ones that work best for you and the path you see for your future.

For example, as I expand my client list, I have turned away from seniors, family photos and weddings because I want my future in architectural builds. Expanding from real estate into cabinet makers, interior designers and product shoots furthered me down the commercial path. Alternatively, as I move forward with new products as a form of passive income, I’m not just looking at what sells, I’m tracking the amount of time it takes to produce each piece, store margins and which pieces fit best in each store. This ensures my physical work is as passive as possible so I can still focus my attention on my clients. Don’t diversify for the sake of another check, diversify to fit the future you want for yourself.

This is especially important for those just starting out. Creative or otherwise, funds keep your business going. But the goal isn’t just to keep the business afloat, it’s to make your business profitable. After taxes, make sure to set aside a percentage of each check to pay yourself with. During slow seasons, when all I can think about is what I haven’t done, having a bank account of my income for the quarter is a great way to remind myself that yes, I have made money and I am profitable.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 114 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
with intention. Profit matters.

Don’t be afraid to evaluate.

If things aren’t going well, you’ve tried everything, crossed things off the list and still aren’t seeing the returns you want, it’s okay to step back and hit pause. Momentum is very important to an entrepreneur, but taking yourself out of the equation for a while can help you identify the problem before it worsens. When I first began, I was spending money on every print that I thought would sell at markets. Focusing on getting into markets over selling my work which landed me in a position with very little income and a ton of expenses.

It wasn’t until I skipped a market and really dug into the pieces and themes that sold best that I realized I was spending money on things that didn’t sell just for the sake of having a full table. Reevaluating is a great way to shore up holes in your business that you might not notice otherwise.

115
Some of Chase Evert’s work

A: Artists are perceived differently than most businesses. People expect you to be shrouded in mysticism somewhere in a New York loft, pumping out work from the depths of your soul. People are keen on telling you what you should do, and mostly that you shouldn’t be an artist. One of the first struggles every artist faces is finding out what they like to create and what sells. If you’re a creative getting your feet wet in the business world, don’t start by making what sells, start with what you love to create and see what works best. We’re in this business because we want to do what we love, don’t lose that spark by making strictly for the market. That’s a surefire recipe for burnout.

Deciding on a price list is another hard one. When I started with clients, it was hard to gauge where I fell on the list of other creative entrepreneurs. What if I start too high and can’t get clients? What if I’m too low and can’t make a profit? Plus, because I was so unsure of myself, it was easy to get flustered if a client asked why my prices were where they were. Look at the time spent on each project, ask people in your network what they charge and why and when your list is set, be firm. I have a list of reasons why my prices are the way they are and every year I re-evaluate to see what’s working and what isn’t. Eventually, people will stop asking why because you’ve proven yourself to be an expert in the field.

Q: What are some of the most impactful challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 116 | DECEMBER 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Q: How did you go about overcoming those challenges?

A: Trial and error. I stopped being scared of asking for advice and found it to be the fastest way to get to where I was confident in myself and my work. This is why having a community of like-minded individuals is a must. They can help bounce ideas when it feels like nothing is going well. My friend Hannah has been my biggest supporter in these pursuits. Knowing someone else navigated the same pitfalls of business ownership and helping each other succeed in the ways we knew best is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world.

I learned confidence from my gallery experiences. When I was starting out, there was always a part of me worrying, “What if you’re just not good enough?” and seeing my work recognized in the professional art world made me sure-footed going forward. I also learned the importance of working within a community. I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity for these events without people in my network first knowing I was a photographer, and second asking me to be a part of them.

The same goes for my print shop. When I first started selling prints, my quality was spotty. I was putting out subpar work in an attempt to make money and I paid for that in unsold prints. I learned how important quality is, and this year, I've spent countless hours studying other photographers' prints, asking people for advice and working closely with Su from Legatt Print & Photo on nailing my print quality.

Q: Who are your biggest mentors?

A: My friend Hannah of Designed by Hannah and Scribble Lady Co.

Hannah is by far my biggest mentor. She is truly a renaissance woman. Her ability to pair her creative work with the business world is remarkable and one of the best sources of information for this line of work. If I have an idea framed out, she has three more to help fill in the gaps. We have been each other's accountability partners since we both started, meeting a few times a month to brainstorm, talk shop and vent about the trials of running a business. Without her, I don’t think I would have made it this far or been as confident in my abilities.

Paul Weaver and The Freelance Photography Course. Paul Weaver is a photographer and business owner. I took his Freelance Photography course during quarantine and I still reference it to this day. He taught me the importance of finding a niche and diversifying within it as a way to position yourself as an expert. His course was the first time someone told me not only can you make a career out of your creative passion, but you don’t have to scrape by as you do it.

Lastly, the art community in Fargo-Moorhead is a miracle in and of itself.

Organizations like the Art Syndicate and Folkways, as well as businesses like Carmine and Hayworth Vintage, have seen the importance of art and helped grow the community to what it is today. The downtown community as a whole is the way it is from people loving art and I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of the people there.

This year, Evert opened his own print shop selling exclusively limited editions. He worked with a local printer in town, Legatt Print & Photo, to carefully select everything down to the paper and ink quality. Within an hour of launching, Evert sold out of multiple editions of his work and saw overwhelming success.

Evert has an array of plans up his sleeve, including another drop in the coming months. While the photographer has come a long way since his time photographing on his flip phone, he admits that he’s always learning and becoming more knowledgeable of the business landscape surrounding him, as well as picking up useful tips of advice for other hopeful entrepreneurs.
