WHAT MAKES

FARGO GREAT Traveling changes you. That much has been written about extensively. In subtle ways, what you have experienced while on the road will affect your nature and behavior. While it opens your eyes to new worlds, it also puts your home in a new light. I recently got back from Hawaii. Here are five revelations I had about FargoMoorhead while lying on a beach drinking from a coconut. andrew@spotlightmediafargo.com

FARGO IS STARTING TO BE RECOGNIZED I’m sure if you traveled anywhere five to 10 years ago and mentioned you’re from Fargo you’d be greeted with the typical response of, “I love that movie.” However, when I mentioned that I’m from Fargo, people began to point out the economy, how things are booming and a variety of other compliments. IT’S NOT ABOUT THE NATURAL BEAUTY There’s no denying that Hawaii has Fargo beat in the natural beauty field. Walk 20 feet in Hawaii and you’ll find a waterfall to jump off or a stream to swim in. Fargo’s definitely lacking in that department. (Can we just build a lake in this city already?) However, look closely and you’ll see the beauty in our own city. There’s something about prairie stretching as far as you can see that is beautiful in its own way. ECONOMY IS KING Consistently ranked as one of the best cities for business and economy, it’s hard to beat Fargo’s economy. One of the lowest unemployment rates in the

12 | JULY 2015 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

country, a state with more than $600 million in budget surplus, a downtown ranked in the top 10 in the nation, however you cut the pie, it’s a great time to live here. THE PEOPLE MAKE IT WORTH IT Marc de Celle captured it perfectly in his books “How Fargo of You” and “Close Encounters of the Fargo Kind” with his tales of generosity and kindness in our humble state. We have to stick together to survive in a climate that can fluctuate 150 degrees throughout the year. WE’RE YOUNG AND GROWING The American Institute for Economic Research ranked Fargo as number six in a list of the top 20 college towns. With a low cost of housing and unemployment and a high concentration of arts and entertainment, Fargo is attracting a young audience. The young people flocking to town and burgeoning sectors means Fargo is only going to grow.

ICE CREAM VS. GELATO While many pastry chefs beg to differ on the actual guidelines of separating these two desserts, we do know that one thing is clear: gelato is generally less fattening than traditional ice cream. Most gelato will have more parts milk or water than cream, making it less in calories but still maintaining the same great taste.

Starting with sweet cream and adding flavors to a mixer, liquid nitrogen is added to instantly freeze the liquid concoction into ice cream. That liquid nitrogen is also 320 degrees below zero, mind you. The flash freeze results in a smoother ice cream with no chance for ice crystals to form. RECOMMENDED FLAVOR:

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT WITH CHEF ERIC WATSON

OLD SCHOOL ICE CREAM

A

long with the feel of the hot, summer heat in Western Colorado, the smell of sagebrush and the excitement of a full day of playtime ahead of me, one of my most vivid childhood memories is the taste of fresh strawberry ice cream. I was in elementary school then and had very few worries other than how accurately my BB gun and golden lab would perform while chasing rabbits. If only I had such worries today. I don’t suppose I’ll be running excitedly through the Colorado wilderness with an air rifle and dog anytime soon, but I can make some pretty darn tasty ice cream whenever I want. Some eggs, cream, sugar and vanilla is all that’s required. Sure, an ice cream machine is always nice but certainly not required. If you have some freezer space and willingness to hand churn every 10 minutes, then you’re good to go. There are many recipes you can use to make ice cream. From milk fat ratios to different techniques, there are countless ways to do it. Regardless of which path you decide, you simply need to remember one thing: ice cream is at it’s best immediately after churning. Once the ice cream is

40 | JULY 2015 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

properly churned and ends up stored in the freezer, the water will naturally begin to separate from the solids and crystalize. This is a slow moving process, but an obvious one nonetheless. Quality pastry shops make their ice creams in precision-based machines and hold them in temperatureprecise commercial freezers. Not as easy to pull off at home. One of our biggest challenges in the restaurant is being able to serve our ice cream quickly enough, before it begins to deteriorate in the freezer. I’ve worked with pastry cooks who swear that stabilizers will solve the problem. Honestly, the only way to experience beautifully prepared ice cream is to churn it and “ENJOY IT” immediately. It’s about fresh quality ingredients and as little time in the freezer as possible. My advice is to make small batches at a time in order to ensure quick consumption. Once you have a great recipe in place and understand the procedure, you’ll need a minimal amount of freezer space, minimal ingredients, tools and you definitely won’t need stabilizers. That’s a pretty inexpensive way to bring back a great childhood memory.

strawberry ICE CREAM MAKES 2 QUARTS 3 cups heavy cream 1 cup whole milk 8 ea. large egg yolks 1 cup sugar, granulated 1 ea. fresh vanilla bean 12 oz. fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered Combine cream and milk in a saucepan and place on medium-high heat. Without stirring, quickly bring cream to a boil and remove from heat. In a mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolk, sugar and the pulp from the vanilla bean. Slowly ladle hot cream into the egg mixture, making sure to whisk quickly. Once all of the cream is tempered into the eggs, place mixture back in saucepan and return to low heat. Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens slightly. Strain the custard through a fine mesh strainer and allow mixture to cool to room temperature (custard should be in a shallow baking dish). Fold fresh strawberries into the custard. Place custard in refrigerator until mixture falls below 40 degrees. Place the custard in freezer and hand churn with a wooden spoon every 10 to 15 minutes until set. 41

THE PROCESS Water and honey are added to a mixing tank that then gets transferred to a larger, FERMENTATION TANK (1). Yeast and grains are then added and it ferments for three weeks before it’s put into a SMALLER TANK (2), where any fruit or spice is added to create different flavors. It continues to ferment in the small tank for another three to four weeks before it’s FILTERED AND BOTTLED (3) by hand. The entire process takes about eight weeks total.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A WINERY OR A BREWERY? “It’s mostly similar to a winery, but those are generally going to be all grape or all fruit. In breweries, you need the mashing equipment where you have to add the grains and cook it with the water and all that. We don’t need to do any of that,” explained Ruud.

TALES & TRADITIONS According to ancient tales, there’s a myth about the word “honeymoon” being derived from mead. After a couple was married, they would drink mead for the first month of marriage to supposedly ensure the birth of a son. Since mead is made of honey and a month was measured by the phases of the moon, the term “honeymoon” was coined.

What’s your background in bartending? “I started off in fine dining about 15 years ago in Minneapolis, Minn. Then I started in the corporate world and worked at (TGI) Friday’s for about five or six years, and then I worked at Hooligans for five. That was my first kind of really high-volume bartending. And I still general manage at Bar Nine. This is a little bit of a different focus on quality of ingredients and variety.”

Why should people hang out at The District? “We have 16 wines on tap, eight reds and eight whites, which is one of the first in the Midwest and the first in Fargo. That’s been very unique to us. We also have 36 beers on tap, which is no small number. Overall there’s just a dedication to good liquor and good cocktails. “We feature a pretty unique menu, thanks to the back of the house kitchen staff. It’s a scratch menu that we all created here together. A lot of places come to town and have this corporate structure because they’ve been built in other places. Here, this is the only one so we don’t have that.”

Can you tell us about the drink? “I like classic cocktails, and this is based off of a ‘dark and stormy.’ I chose Jameson Black just because I’m a fan of Irish whiskeys. It’s also been fun to goof around with the St. Germain; it’s a versatile liqueur to feature. And ginger beer has been trending lately so we always have a lot of people asking for that. Then, the grapefruit bitters gets a little more citrus out of the drink, adding a little extra flavor. It’s also a good summer drink; citrusy with a little bit of a kick that would be great to sip out on our patio.”

SOUTH FARGO BAR AND RESTAURANT HOLDS ON TO FARGO’S NOSTALGIA By Erica Rapp | Photos by Paul Flessland

Walk into Frank’s Lounge in South Fargo and you’ll see a piece of neon art that brings back fond memories for most Fargo natives. Owner Jeff Thomas told us stories about his new bar and restaurant and how he brought a small piece of the old Pink Pussycat Lounge back to life. 54 | JULY 2015 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

When the time came to talk about opening a bar and restaurant in South Fargo, Thomas knew he wanted to use one of the old neon signs from the Pink Pussycat Lounge as a piece of art. After contacting an old friend, he was able to obtain and restore one of the iconic neon cats that once adorned the walls of the old lounge. “I’m a Fargo kid, and I remember the Pink Pussycat and I always loved the logo,” said Thomas. “Mario Olivieri, who owns and operates Joseph’s (School of Hair Design), had some of the old neon and was generous enough to sell one to me.” After only a few months of operation, Frank’s Lounge has quickly become a friendly neighborhood

FUN FACTS

• There’s a patio that seats 70, complete with a fire pit. And most of it is covered in case of inclement weather. • The bar has charitable gaming through the NDSU Team Makers: two blackjack tables, pig wheel and pull-tabs. • The art on the walls of the game area is by local artist, Rando.

And we just wanted a neighborhood friendly name, so I named it after my late father, Frank. He was an entrepreneur and businessman in town and I always had a great deal of respect for him,” expressed Thomas. Thomas also says that one of the great things about Frank’s is the food. Kitchen manager and lead cook, Mike Anderson, created a diverse menu that ranges anywhere from soups and salads to blueberry pork wraps and lavosh. Top that off with a well-rounded drink menu and you’re looking at a great place to eat and hang out with the gang. TIMM SHARP TALKS ABOUT HIS NEW SHOW COMING TO STARZ AND OFFERS TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE IT IN HOLLYWOOD

F

argo native Timm Sharp has made his mark in Hollywood over the years, starring in shows such as “Undeclared”, “Six Feet Under” and Comedy Central’s “Drunk History”, along with appearing in films opposite actors such as Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey. Read on to find out about his accomplishments on the big screen and what he’s been working on.

FOR MORE INFO fargomonthly.com 58 | JULY 2015 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Q&A WITH TIMM SHARP FARGO MONTHLY: With you being from Fargo but so busy with work, how often do you get the chance to make it back here?

TIMM SHARP: “I’m actually in Fargo right now. I’m teaching

some classes over at Trollwood. I try to do that whenever I can in the summer. I grew up doing that, and it kind of gave me the confidence and the drive to go for it professionally."

GO A&E FM: You’re starring in a new show on Starz called “Blunt Talk” that premieres August 22. Can you tell us a little bit about what viewers can expect?

TS: “It’s about a character named Walter Blunt, who is played

by Patrick Stewart. He’s a Piers Morgan-type character or like a Larry King… he’s got a nightly talk show called ‘Blunt Talk’ that’s on a CNN-like station. I play his head writer and producer. It’s more of a character-driven show than it is about the show itself. It’s more about the relationships that we all have. Seth McFarlane is one of the people involved, along with Jonathan Ames, who did "Bored to Death" on HBO. Him (Ames), Seth (McFarlane) and Patrick (Stewart) got together and created this interesting … you know, it’s really unlike anything I think that has ever been on TV. It’s very unique and it’s fun. I think it’s going to relate to a lot of different types of people and ages.”

FM: You’ve worked alongside people such as Seth Rogan in

“Undeclared”, Will Ferrell in “Kicking and Screaming” and Jennifer Aniston in “Friends with Money” – how is it working with such big names?

WATCH TIMM SHARP IN “BLUNT TALK” THE NEW SHOW ON

PREMIERES AUGUST 22ND

TS: ”It’s great. They’re all very talented and nice people. At first

I think it’s a little intimidating. In fact, with Patrick Stewart, the producers emailed me and said that Patrick wanted to have brunch with me. ... I don’t know why I was so intimidated. After a minute of meeting him I was at ease, but that pretty much goes with everyone I’ve worked with in a way. I’d always be like ‘Whoah, this is so cool,’ but then you’re also on set all day with these people so that wears off and they’re just another person.”

FM: Do you have a favorite show or film that you’ve worked on? TS: “It’s kind of a toss-up. I had the most fun playing Dougie

in “Enlightned” on HBO, which is the job I had before this one. That was kind of like a dream part. Other than that, “Undeclared” was a pretty close second because that was one of the first things I had done and I had no idea, at the time, the quality of people I was working with.”

FM: Improv is one of your hobbies outside of film and television; how often do you have time to do that?

TS: “I do it even during jobs. If I’m not working that night I’ll go

do a show at UCB, the Upright Citizens Brigade. That’s kind of where it’s at as far as improv goes these days. I’ve been doing that pretty consistently for about five years now. It’s a great, incredible community of people and it’s just a way to fulfill that need for attention that all actors seem to have. It kind of keeps you sharp and keeps you on your toes."

FM: What advice would you give to aspiring actors and actresses?

TS: “I would say two things. One is to get involved with some

kind of group like that, like UCB. Just get involved, and if you’re in a small town, go to a bigger one and get involved with that. Simply because it not only will make you a better actor or improviser, it eventually seems to be the way to get work too. Second, be a nice person. I feel like sometimes, young actors think that the cool thing to do is to be a jerk ... You know what I mean? That’s not the case. People won’t want to work with you if you’re a d#ck." 59

ou might have heard about Experience Blur’s recent area productions of “Grease” and “The Great Gatsby” in the last few years, and now the theatre company is back for round three with this summer’s performance of “Heartthrob.” Co-Artistic Director and cast member Kelsey Schroeder filled us in on the details for this event that you wouldn’t want to miss out on. Founded by Fargo native Ryan Domres, Experience Blur is Fargo’s first regional theatre company, and they’re changing the shape of theatre in our area. Domres formerly worked on Broadway in New York and on various national tours doing anything from directing to choreographing before he realized he wanted to do something more to make his ideas come to life. “New York is a really difficult place to get up on your feet like that because it’s really expensive to have space and there just isn’t time,” explained Schroeder. “So, being from Fargo and with the huge supportive arts community that we have, he thought it would be a really great place to start a regional theatre company.”

Heartthrob

This year, the company will feature a production on the life of the iconic Marilyn Monroe, directed by Domres. Schroeder explained that their idea came from talking about the types of things that people don’t typically know about the actress, and how the media would notoriously focus on a lot of the negative aspects about her life. The company’s production will be shedding a more positive light on the actress’s life and work. “It will uncover the things that we think she was more of, like that fact that she had so much hope and was such a hard worker… I mean, people thought she was one of the greatest actresses of all time. Well, why?” explained Schroeder.

Show times: 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. July 2 – Grand Forks, N.D. | Empire Arts Center July 7-18 – Fargo | The Stage at Island Park July 21-24 – Minneapolis, Minn. | Ritz Theatre Visit experienceblur.com for tickets and more information.

Blurring the Lines

This is where things with Experience Blur get real tricky. It’s hard to define this performance as a “musical” or an ordinary “play”, so to speak. They’re inspired by all sorts of theatre, dance and acrobat companies and are working to draw on new types of acts to incorporate in their show that you might not typically see in a theatre setting. “We don’t want to define ourselves as just a theatre company, because when you say ‘theatre’ or ‘musical’ people can make a lot of assumptions,” said Schroeder. “But our, for lack of a better word, mission, is to redefine what theatre is and think about it in terms of what it could be.” With that being said, make sure you pencil this event down in your schedule. Fargo’s first regional theatre company is definitely one to show support for, so get ready for a night of captivating theatre that’s out-of-the-box and nothing like you’ve seen before.

BODY TYPE A person who has an O body type is considered wellendowed on the upper half with not much booty but loves their pretty curves. The main goal for styling is to bring attention to the face and legs, keeping the girls covered.

O BODY TYPE TIPS Always wear a supportive bra and make sure tops fit comfortably and properly (ex. Not bubbling or rippling from being too form-fitting.) Printed tops, tops with flowy movement at the bottom and clothing looser at the hips are great. Try wide-leg trousers to balance out the body frame. No skinny jeans, unless you pair these with tall or knee-high boots.

BODY TYPE Someone who has a B body type tends to hold weight in the belly area or have a more boyish figure with not a lot of definition at the waist. The main goal for styling is to bring attention inward and to the face, as this naturally draws attention away from belly.

B BODY TYPE TIPS Never tuck shirts in. Accessorize to emphasize your upper half by wearing short or long necklaces, statement earrings, scarves or anything to bring the attention to the face. Make sure tops and jackets go past the widest part of your midriff.

Someone that has a D body type tends to have narrower shoulders with larger hips, and often fluctuates weight in the hips and thighs. The main goal for styling is to visually widen the shoulders to balance the hips.

D BODY TYPE TIPS “Widen” the shoulders by wearing open cardigans, open scarves and horizontal stripes, but don’t have anything going down the center of the body. Straight or wide-leg trousers are key pieces to balance this body type. Tops and jackets should land at the hip, just past your belly but before they hit your booty, or be at a tunic length, just bypassing the hips.

BODY TYPE Someone that has an X body type has their weight fluctuate evenly, and they have a more narrow waistline, or an hourglass figure. The proportion of their bodies is balanced and curvy, whether it’s a larger or smaller frame. The main goal for styling is to stay balanced. You’re already in proportion so you don’t want to become unbalanced.

X BODY TYPE TIPS Fit is important, so clothing that is too tight can be unprofessional and too loose makes your figure disappear. Go for what is comfortable and fits a natural hourglass shape. Opposites are great, so pair flowy tops with fitted trousers or fitted tops with flowy bottoms. Accentuate the waist with belts or by wearing three-fourths length sleeves.

ABOUT

downtown update

why downtown fargo Feels Small But Stands Tall What does Downtown Fargo have in common with Grafton and Valley City, N.D.? With a residential population of 4,360, Downtown Fargo is the 13th largest city in North Dakota. Valley City is 12th (pop. 6,699) and Grafton is 14th (pop. 4,324). Like a small town, Downtown Fargo is a place where neighbors get to know each other but offers the amenities of a hip, urban core. Here’s our list of what makes Downtown Fargo like one of its smaller compatriots: Downtown is a bicyclist's dream because it is flat as a pancake and has access to trails and bike lanes. Walkscore.com gives the 58102 zip code a bike score of 94, a “Biker’s Paradise.” Don’t own a bicycle? No problem. Purchase a pass with Great Rides Bike Share and use one of theirs. With seven stations downtown, access is easy. And if you are an NDSU student, Bike Share is free. Downtown Fargo is ranked the seventh best downtown in America, according to Livability.com. You’ll find legendary beverages that you won’t find anywhere else, from locally roasted coffees to fine crafted beer brewed right in downtown. So much more is nearby: entertainment, galleries, shops, museums, performing arts, the YMCA and, of course, Fargo’s Central Park, Island Park.

Fargo’s best restaurants are downtown. From specially-prepared bison to authentic German sausages, homemade comfort foods like meatloaf to culinary masterpiece sandwiches, gourmet pizzas to scrumptious desserts, you really can’t go wrong eating in Downtown Fargo. Fargo’s best special events take place downtown: St. Patrick’s Parade, Cruisin’ Broadway, Streets Alive!, Downtown Fargo Street Fair, Alley Fair, NDSU Homecoming Parade, the Xcel Energy Holiday Lights Parade and even more to come. Like a small town, it's easy to get to know your neighbors. Meet your neighbors at retail events like Wine About Winter, Ladies Night Hour, Corks & Canvas, Kegs & Canvas and shop downtown during the most magical time of the year, the holidays.

IN SEARCH OF

Wildness The miles ticked by for Shane Ulven and Nate Haugen as they drove along in their Subaru Crosstrek on a road trip that would make Jack Kerouac proud. The trip took them through towns like Crested Butte, Colo. and Boulder City, Nev. as they took the back roads of the American West. 7,417 miles later, they found themselves back in their hometown of Hawley, Minn., with a lighter wallet, a messy car, a Facebook page full of photos and stories and a new outlook on life. This wasn’t an ordinary road trip though. This was a journey to “take wing … in search of wildness.” By Andrew Jason Profile photo by J. Alan Paul Photography | Photos by Project Wildness

augen, 27, and Ulven, 28, have been friends since first grade. The plan for an epic road trip through the West has been on their mind for quite awhile. It was fairly recent though, that the trip took on a whole new meaning. “At the beginning, it was just going to be a road trip,” Haugen said. “One day we were sitting down chatting and I said, ‘I’ve got $500 I’d like to give away on this trip in whatever way feels right at the time.’ Pretty much before I was done explaining that, Shane said, ‘I’ll match that.’ We had $1,000. We went from there.” That’s when Project Wildness began. The idea was simple. The two friends would travel around and give money to deserving individuals they met along the way. Everything changed once they began to advertise their trip. Friends began to donate money and once they started a GoFundMe campaign, money rolled in. In one month, their new journey, named Project Wildness, took off and raised over $5,700. During their trip, they would hand out the money to deserving individuals. “(While on the trip) we looked at each other and said, ‘Man, how do these perfect situations continue to pop up around us?’” Haugen said. “We came to the realization that they’re happening all of the time, we just don’t keep our eyes open enough in our everyday lives

to accept them and welcome them in. … When you really open your eyes to what’s happening around you, you start to realize that these scenarios pass you up every single day.”

Ulven poses with Vietnam vet Andy. In Ulven’s hand is the knife Andy gave them.

Naturalist and author John Muir wrote in his 1901 book “Our National Parks” that it is great for man to “take wing every summer in search of wildness.” This quote stood out for the two men as they began their journey. “We didn’t know who we would meet, what we would see, the different landscapes we would see…” Haugen said. “That to us was kind of the wildness that John Muir talked about – not knowing exactly where we were going with it and what would happen and really being OK and comfortable with walking straight into that darkness. We decided that with Project Wildness, we’re going to take wing in search of wildness this summer.” The two men took off from their hometown of Hawley, Minn. and headed into South Dakota before venturing west. It wasn’t long before they found their first victim to unleash their kindness on. The following is taken off their Facebook page. “Last night we rolled into Deadwood, S.D., and sat down for a beer at one of the many bars with built-in casinos. We didn’t partake in the slots, but chatted with a sweet bartender named

Janice. … She told us she could retire but would get terribly bored only staying at home and also likes a little extra income so she can buy things for her two greatgrandchildren.” They ended up leaving an envelope of cash for Janice. And so the stories rolled on. They passed through the Black Hills, through Montana and eventually into Washington before landing in the town of Seaside, Ore. There they met a man named Andy from New Mexico. Andy, a former Marine who served in Vietnam, had a special impact on them. “He looked like he was having a down day, sitting in the van with the door open while the rest of his family was out enjoying the beach,” said Ulven. “We went up and talked to him and said how much we appreciate what he’s done. The guy started tearing up, he gave us a hug and said, ‘Nothing like this has ever happened before.’ It was incredible. It changed his whole demeanor around. He even gave us his Marine knife he was issued because he felt like he had to give us a gift in exchange.”

78 | JULY 2015 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

For several weeks Haugen and Ulven traversed the country, staying with friends, in campgrounds and making new friends. One of the last nights of their trip brought them driving through torrential downpours in southern Wyoming when they came across Sergeant Major David Joiner, a 70-year-old Vietnam veteran. He was hitchhiking to get back home to Salmon, Idaho after having a heart attack while on the job as a trucker. After spending several hours in the car with Joiner, Haugen and Ulven drove out of their way to Alpine, Wyo., where they put him up in a hotel and paid for his bus trip home. As they were saying their goodbyes, something special happened. “He gave us a hug, a handshake and he saluted us,” Ulven said. “Nate and I don’t know what to do with that. I asked him, ‘How do you do this?’ He showed us the proper way to salute. It was really neat because he was showing us that and we were showing him the respect of that salute that he was giving to us. It was incredible to have that kind of connection.”

GET INVOLVED You can donate money to their cause through their GoFundMe campaign at gofundme.com/projectwildness

The next day, the two men packed back into their Crosstrek and headed home.

THE NEXT JOURNEY

Although they’ve returned home, they’re not done yet. Haugen and Ulven are preparing for a second trip across the American West. They hope to leave in early July and will be donating money to those worthy of it. “We’re going to end up taking off again and making this a second stage because in the first stage, we were only able to give away half of what we raised,” Haugen said. Project Wildness doesn’t stop there though. They do not want their journey to end this summer, or any summer for that matter. The two are hoping they can expand this into an ongoing cause and get others onboard. “The goal is to make it into something that we can do that’s more than a one or two trip type of thing and maybe expand this somehow,” Haugen said. “We’ve yet to decide or determine how exactly that will happen. All that it really has to do is talk to the right one or two people or companies that can give us the launch we need.”

GO COMMUNITY

Collaborating for the Hood This UK-based nonprofit has just made its way into the United States. In fact, Fargo is the first city in the U.S. to have a chapter of Good For Nothing, a growing community of “thinkers, doers, makers and tinkerers” that find time to gift their skills and assets to things like nonprofits and projects of social good. By Erica Rapp

T

he Fargo chapter was started out of a group effort. Brittany Sickler and Jeff Knight are involved in many of the same community events and when they both heard about the opportunity to start a chapter here, they decided to jump on it with a core group of people. This past winter, Fargo became the first city in the United States to have a chapter for this worldwide group, with New York following shortly after.

bring together members of the community to solve problems and help out through events and gigs.

“It’s a little more expanded than a nonprofit. They say it’s coming together to celebrate the work of a cause-led organization,” said Sickler.

Folks in the community can donate their time to helping out those advocating for social change, and skills of all types are welcome at the events. After all, there are a lot of different types of needs out there for organizations trying to get their feet off the ground. Brainstorming events or socials can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the needs.

What does that mean, exactly? In a nutshell, nonprofits and others doing good for the community have the ability to reach out when they’re in need, and Good For Nothing helps to

“The idea is that a lot of nonprofits don’t have either the resources, whether it’s financial or the professional resources necessary to really get some traction in terms of their ability to communicate. That would be a logo, a website, social media, marketing … there’s a lot of options,” said Sickler.

“Depending on the need mostly, newer organizations sometimes don’t have the resources just because they are new, but there are a lot of old ones too that just don’t know the best way to reach an audience,” Knight said. “Maybe they had a change in strategy or they have a new kind of focus or division. We can help them with logos or even brainstorming things like effective social media and fundraising.” If you’re looking to get involved and do some good in your hood, here’s your chance to put your skills and knowledge to great use. Not to mention, it’s actually pretty fun to brainstorm with friends over food and drinks. goodfornothing.com/chapter/fargo

GO BUSINESS

around the town By Craig Whitney

FMWF AREA BOOMING!

What’s the Problem?

his is an incredibly exciting time to live in the metro area. Our communities are seeing substantial growth, new businesses and housing and there is no doubt the FargoMoorhead-West Fargo area is thriving. In the last five years and on a continued daily basis, we see marked massive growth, which has helped stimulate our economy and increase the tax dollars brought into our area.

T

This growth is in all business sectors, from dining to hotels, retail and more. Just look at how quickly 45th Street in Fargo and Veterans Boulevard in West Fargo are booming. On the Minnesota side, Moorhead is also seeing additional housing projects, including rentals and single-family units, hotels, a new Sam’s Club and Hornbacher’s. In Downtown Fargo, there is continued development with talk of

a new city hall, as well as office, hotel and retail space coming in. South Fargo’s Davies High School area and 52nd Street is also on the rise. We are fortunate to live in such a prospering region with a thriving economy. Despite this growth and great economic climate, our region is faced with an increasing struggle of maintaining, attracting and retaining an adequate workforce to sustain our growth. We consistently have a low unemployment rate, but many open jobs. This has become a real concern for businesses in the area, and it’s something we don’t want to ignore. That’s why next month we will be sharing the results of a comprehensive workforce study, led by The Chamber and the Economic Development Corporation, along with the Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, the FM Area Foundation and the United Way of Cass-Clay. The

study looks at how we can collectively tackle this issue. The findings of the study are conclusive that a lack of workers exists in every sector of our economy. From skilled trades, including nurses and engineers, to food and beverage service, hospitality and manufacturing. This is across the board and literally affects all businesses. We must focus on retaining our people and retaining our students when they graduate college. It is key to our business community. Our hope is that the study findings help our businesses find – and keep – qualified employees

to do jobs in the area to keep our region strong and thriving. We must attract new people to our community by promoting the very fiber of why we thrive. Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo are great places to raise a family, with strong Midwestern values and is simply an amazing area to live and work.

TECHNOLOGY. ENTERTAINMENT. DESIGN. Since 1984, TED has been bringing people together to present “ideas worth spreading.” For those living under a rock, TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas. Their signature programs are TEDx events - local, selforganized events that bring people together to talk about a variety of topics and passions.

In 2012, Greg Tehven, co-founder of Emerging Prairie, brought the first TEDx event to Fargo. From the first ever event of 100 people to an expected 2,000 plus attendees this year, TEDxFargo has grown rapidly. It’s not only the attendance that has grown, but it’s also the experience. TEDxFargo is pulling out all the stops this year to pull off a successful event. “This year, with the growth of attendees, we’re looking to transform the Civic Center,” said lead organizer Annika Nynas. “Make it something that people from Fargo don’t even recognize when they walk into it and they’re inspired and so pleasantly surprised by all the unique elements we’re able to bring to it.”

This year’s theme is all about wonder. Anyone who walks into the Civic Center will be greeted with an entirely different building. Although plans are still being finalized, Nynas and co-organizer Mark Staple, promise it to be something different. “It’s breathing new and exciting life into the Civic Center that usually isn’t there,” Staple said. “Making it seem like it’s (TEDxFargo) meant to be in that space rather than us just needing more space for attendees, making it native to that.”

FESTIVAL VIBE TEDxFargo will have an almost festival-like vibe. While the whole event will be centered around the 11 speakers, there will be plenty of other events. For example, all attendees will get treated to a lunch on Second Avenue between Broadway and Fifth Street. The lunch will be catered by a variety of restaurants. During the day of the event, there will be lots of activities around the Civic Center like art, musicians and areas to have conversations. All of this is to provide attendees with the most bang for their buck. “I’ve been to a few TEDx events around the country and I think what we really do is that we have such time dedicated to planning out the experience for people…” said Staples. “We’re more all-inclusive with our tickets than most TEDx events.” The organizers are really hoping that many of the events will be organic and created by attendees getting to know each other. One way they are facilitating this is that

TEDxFargo attendees can get free Uber rides to the event or $1 MATBUS fourday bus passes. The goal is to get all parts of the city involved. “We’re really focusing with TEDxFargo showcasing the city’s culture, or at least a subset of that culture…” said Staple. “If you want to know more about Fargo, if you have an interest in a part of the community that you don’t often see, TEDxFargo, I think we do a really good job of giving people a look at that culture.”

Introducing the Cathedral District

A

city is strongest when it has strong neighborhoods. That’s something Emerging Prairie cofounder Jake Joraanstad and I heard from one of Fargo’s City Planners, Dan Mahli. It’s also something emphasized in Brad Feld’s best-selling book, “Startup Communities”, wherein he challenges community leaders to make long term commitments towards the vision of their city. So, when Emerging Prairie’s co-founders got together in the spring of 2013 to discuss how to build a strong community, we knew having a close-knit neighborhood was a necessary piece to the puzzle. We decided to integrate Feld’s idea with Mahli’s, creating a vision for a neighborhood that could be the home for artists and entrepreneurs. We began to build up our neighborhood, located in an area between Downtown Fargo and North Dakota State University, just north of St. Mary’s Cathedral. It was the cathedral, in the end, that inspired the name for our developing neighborhood: The Cathedral District. Although our vision is in its early

days, we’ve watched The Cathedral District expand and grow, attracting people with its atmosphere and central location. Friends host barbecues, outdoor movie nights and can easily walk to work. During the summer of 2014, the most interesting piece was added to the equation - the formation of the Fargo Startup House. Emerging Prairie cofounder Miguel Danielson purchased a home and hired local artist Brandon LaPlant to design and build out the space, offering it as a place where local entrepreneurs can live for free, working among each other on a shared mission to build up their companies and make their ideas a reality. Now, local entrepreneurs Sarah English, Trent Cahoon, and Matt Sullivan all call the Startup House home. They are in their early twenties and are building companies that could make a massive impact. English is gamifying language learning with a game set in France. Cahoon is creating ways for virtual reality software to be integrated into our lives. Sullivan

is working to make long distance transportation more viable and sustainable for young people that live without cars. They are each an integral part of the neighborhood. The Cathedral District is in its early days, but we are already seeing the results of a small group of folks committing to a neighborhood. We have more walks together, share meals and can help each other out on a moment’s notice. Neighbors chat about the next chapter of the neighborhood, recruiting friends to join and encouraging local shops to enter. The possibility of our vision brings me hope that I can relive one of the greatest experiences of my life when I lived in Territorial Hall as a freshman at the University of Minnesota. That close-knit community doesn’t have to end after college. It’s made up of neighbors who are engaged, living together, asking big questions and committed to their community. Together, we create the neighborhoods that are the building blocks to a stronger city. So, won’t you be my neighbor?

Great North Insurance owner and founder Nick Killoran explained that he and his business partner had the opportunity to host an event at the Loretta Building and the Fargo Theatre downtown. They knew right away that they wanted to have a charity event that was as fun as possible, so when their idea of showing the classic film “The Breakfast Club” came up, they made the entire event an 80s throwback party. That’s where the best part comes in. They used the throwback theme to have a costume party at the event to determine which local charity all of the money raised was going to go. Talk about crazy hair and neon to complement those drinks and hors d’oeuvres. “We couldn’t think of who we wanted to give the money from the ticket sales to, and I wanted to make sure the money was getting used correctly,” stated Killoran. “After Spotlight Media got involved, we

94 | JULY 2015 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

decided to have a costume contest and let the winner choose where the funds would be donated to.” After tickets were sold, area businesses such as Valley Mortgage, Great North Insurance themselves and Kiernan/DeJean Property Associates all decided to match the amount of the ticket sales. And after all of that was donated, the Dakota Medical Foundation doubled the amount for its own contribution, resulting in a grand total of $6,800 collectively raised. And we know you were wondering, but the gal dressed as Cher was the winner of the costume contest, who chose to have the money donated to YWCA Cass Clay. The second place costume went to the couple dressed as Elliot and Gertie from “E.T.”, who won a free beer tour from Fargo Brewing Company. This event is a great way for small businesses in town to make a difference, and for people to recognize the impact it can have on the community. But don’t be bummed out on missing this great event, because it will most definitely be happening next year.

BRANDI CARLILE

August 5th at 8 p.m.

For audiences and critics alike, Brandi Carlile’s songs are a perfect communion between artist and listener. Since her heralded, genre-defying 2005 Columbia debut, Carlile and her indispensable collaborators, Tim and Phil Hanseroth, aka The Twins, have always offered listeners both

control and abandon, often within a single song. Their newest release, “The Firewatcher’s Daughter,” was cut in Seattle’s Bear Creek Studio. Carlile and The Twins, intent on capturing the elusive essence of a song’s spirit, tracked the album live, with little or no rehearsal. jadepresents.com Fargo Theatre 314 Broadway N, Fargo
