Fargo Monthly July 2024

I & A LITTLE 'BOUT LOVE A LOT ABOUT LIVIN'

t's summertime in the Red River Valley, but this past month, I spent my time elsewhere—cruising Highway 10, winding down backroads on the lakeside, hitting the pavement on many a Main Street, and exploring an area that I like to call magical—lakes country. Having grown up in western North Dakota, a tree and a lake weren't common to come by. My first exposure to the eastern Minnesota gem of the lakes area was when I was a fresh 19-year-old and my Minnesota-born-and-bred friends took me to Detroit Lakes in the shining month of July.

I remember being fascinated by the amount of lush, green trees along Highway 10, the little popup towns along it reminded me of home after spending my first year in the "big city" of Fargo. Then, rounding the corner and dropping down on the highway to see my first look at Detriot Lakes, I think I squealed— this place was summertime incarnate. The mid-morning sun was beating down on the pavement filled with people popping into the shops and "The Middle" by Zedd was playing on repeat as we made our way through the busy streets. My friends knew we had to peek at the town's namesake before heading towards the infamous K

& K Tubing (it was also going to be my first time tubing down the river... it was also the first time I heard the song "Chattahoochee," it was an exciting day). We made our way down Summit Avenue with the windows down, and as we crested over the top of the small hill, I saw it—Detroit Lake. The water was shimmering, the towels were being laid out on the beach, and jetskis were zooming across the still-glass-like water of the morning. I was a bit awed. After pointing out Zorbaz and driving up the beach on Lake Drive, we headed further east to float out the afternoon.

A year later, the same group ventured to the south to Pelican Rapids. After visiting a friend's family cabin, we did a short walking tour of the small town. Of course, we had to take some photos with the giant pelican sculpture before aimlessly wandering around until heading back to town.

Two years ago, a friend and I were driving back from Minneapolis in June. We got out of the cities and decided at the last minute to "take the back roads." If I remember correctly, somewhere between Monticello and St. Cloud, we got off I-94 and onto a highway. It must have been Highway 10 because, after a few (many) rolling fields

and tractors later, we wound up in Perham. We pulled into the downtown and stopped at the Main Street Express for gas, snacks, and a bathroom break. I remember being enchanted by the look and feel of the small town. Later, we pulled into Detroit Lakes, not for gas or a bathroom break, but for an extra special treat from Dairy Queen: the creamy, icy deliciousness of a Misty Freeze.

In the seven years since my first adventure into lakes country, I've become pretty familiar with it— be it the boutique downtowns, the cozy diners, the beaches and lakes, or simply the scenic roads that get me there. Whether it's a day trip, a weekend getaway, or an impromptu adventure, remember that you don't have to venture far to explore and learn something new. Safe travels this summer, and,

Happy Reading!

P.S. A huge thank you to longtime Minnesota resident, Tina Aranda for helping me fill in some of the recommendations in this guide, and to her daughter, Marisa, for being the first to tour me through rural Minnesota. Geneva Nodland Editor

ezzaluna, an already cherished name for its vibrant and dynamic dining atmosphere, will soon be complemented by another elusive space—The Drawing Room, an exclusive speakeasy-inspired space.

Tucked beneath the cozied corner of Mezzaluna, this hidden spot will offer your evening a blend of classic cocktails, small plates, and unmatched energy.

Owner Taylor Snelling and Owner and Executive Chef Joe Brunner, the visionaries behind this ambitious project, are excited about this dual-experience model—pairing the chic yet relaxed atmosphere of Mezzaluna with the exclusive environment of The Drawing Room.

Originally, the “withdrawing room” of the 16th century was where patrons retreated for private conversations away from the busy main hall. This concept evolved into the “drawing room” by the 17th century, reflecting changes in social customs and designs. The drawing room became a formal space not only for intimate gatherings but also for displaying art, hosting musical performances, and engaging in elevated conversation. Through the 18th and 19th centuries, it became a central feature in homes, symbolizing a blend of luxury and personal retreat.

This historical blend of privacy, sophistication, and culture inspires this new space aptly named. Here, the essence of the drawing room is reimagined—a secluded, elegant space where guests can enjoy refined dining and cocktails, evoking the spirit of those private, plush rooms of the past.

Here's What You Can Expect

Seamless Transition

Start with dinner at Mezzaluna and venture downstairs into the Drawing Room for an evening of vintage charm and cocktail mastery.

Culinary & Cocktail Craft

Explore a vast cocktail menu featuring originals and classics, alongside an extensive wine list, vibrant small plates, and desserts.

Sophisticated Design

Created by Kelly Bauer of KBA Architecture and crafted by Border Construction, their collaborative effort has birthed a space that not only reflects vintage charm but also modern sophistication, perfectly bridging the old with the new.

THE SPARKLE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AT

WIMMER'S GOLDSMITHS can resize rings, along with many other services including repair, restorations, cleaning, maintenance, custom design, and engraving!

T WIMMER’S DIAMONDS, THE BRILLIANCE OF COMPLETED PIECES LEAVING THE SHOP DOESN'T JUST REFLECT THE QUALITY OF THE GEMS AND METALS, BUT THE WORKMANSHIP OF THEIR IN-HOUSE GOLDSMITHS—PAUL AND BRENDA. WITH OVER 70 YEARS OF COMBINED EXPERIENCE, THESE ARTISANS SHAPE BOTH STUNNING JEWELRY AND THE REPUTATION OF WIMMER'S AS A CORNERSTONE IN THE COMMUNITY FOR TRUSTED JEWELRY SERVICES.

A before and after look at one of Wimmer's Goldsmiths' recent projects!

DID YOU KNOW? Goldsmithing at Wimmer's involves specialized skills that are honed through training. Wimmer’s offers its goldsmiths opportunities for professional development. Brenda got her start in the industry in 1981, with Wimmer's supporting her career from scratch by working with her to apprentice in-house and to get off-site training—she's still with the business today! More drawn to the designing aspect of goldsmithing, Paul went a different route—after attending a four-year art school and majoring in metal smithing, he joined the Wimmers team in 1990 and began apprenticing for bench work. And, the rest is history!

In-house goldsmiths at a jewelry store are the unsung heroes behind closed doors—specifically at Wimmer’s, behind the vintage door from their original 1919 location. They undertake a variety of tasks, from the intricate crafting and setting of precious stones to comprehensive repairs. Their work is vital—they ensure that every piece of jewelry that passes through Wimmer's shop doors meets a high standard of excellence. It's not just Wimmer's standard they assure before sending a finished piece home, Paul and Brenda strive to put their best foot forward so they too can be proud of every piece coming out of the shop.

Goldsmithing in the jewelry sector is an art that demands a deep reservoir of patience and a fiery passion for its work. These skills are fostered through continuous learning and practice, which Wimmer’s supports as they send their goldsmiths to specialized courses and certification programs.

Each creation by Wimmer’s goldsmiths is a testament to both time-honored methods and innovative techniques. While you might be a lifelong patron of Wimmer's and never see the talented folks behind your cherished pieces, the goldsmiths at Wimmer’s are always devotedly working behind closed doors.

Visit Wimmer’s Diamonds to witness how the goldsmiths combine their skills and passion to keep the tradition of fine jewelry alive and thriving. It’s about maintaining a legacy of quality and trust that has been cherished by generations.

"Our mechanics are special. We are very particular about who we add to the team—you have to be good and willing to work hard because we're always working... The first mechanic we used to have fixed a bunch of our broken stuff. He was a professional snowcross mechanic and he lived down the road and had a shop. So, in the summer he would do odd jobs and fix our stuff and we asked him one day if he would ever come on full time and he did. Gavin, our second mechanic, hit us up and wanted us to just give him a chance to prove himself. he didn't know it but the six-foot-tall dirt bike was his test. American Getaway

new friends before starting our morning shifts slicing deli meat and stocking shelves.

This "weekend getaway" turned into a transformational life change. I returned to work at the park the next summer, even dragging two hometown friends along with me. That summer transitioned into a month-long California road trip and then a solo trip around Europe. I had caught the bug: getting thrown into a completely new culture, like jumping into a river and letting yourself flow downstream. I eventually finished college, and after graduation, I assumed my spontaneous traveling days would be on pause for a while as I started law school in New York that next fall. But first, one more trip.

I traveled to Chile to study Spanish for two months at a language immersion school. Fully immersed in the color, flair, and heat of South America I made it a month into classes before I called my parents and told them I couldn’t go to

law school—and I wouldn’t be coming home. I packed my backpack and jumped on planes, buses, boats, and motorcycles for the next five months, traveling across the continent and down to Antarctica to traipse around with the penguins. But, as the Fourth of July neared, I could practically smell the summer aroma of grilled hot dogs and mosquito repellant. I needed to go home.

But first, one more trip.

I reached out to some guy I met through mutual friends who lived in Detroit Lakes. I was exhausted from non-stop travel for the last half a year and craved a ‘lakes getaway.’

My mom picked me up at the airport and, the terrible daughter I am, I immediately asked her to drive me to the store so I could buy a swimsuit and then “please, pretty please” drive me 45 minutes out to Detroit Lakes. The next few days at the lake, with this “some guy,” allowed me to immerse myself in another

new culture, one I didn’t grow up with, including boating, beach lounging, and late-night patio dances. As much fun as I had backpacking across a new continent, this weekend getaway in a town less than an hour away from home was probably one of my favorite experiences. I felt accepted and relaxed, like I could settle in and let the experience wash over me.

It’s not always easy to settle in and let yourself “get away,” especially when it can take days to destress from daily life, or if plans didn’t go as you, well, planned. All this to say: you can get away almost anywhere; how you choose to experience the adventure is up to you. You never know what might happen, which is part of the fun.

Speaking of which, sixteen years later I’m still with “Some Guy.” We go on lots of getaways.

Meet The MAKER MAKER

Foiled Again Glass

Being a part of the Brewhalla Makers Markets has led us to meet so many new makers that we are continually impressed in this growing FM creative community. They are taking traditional craft and creating a whole new vibe with it! Ben Hill of Foiled Again Glass caught our eye immediately with his new, fresh take on stained glass from a bowl of ramen to using X-rays. Read more about this local maker’s work and story below!

Tell us a bit about yourself. I grew up in the Minneapolis area and moved to Fargo for college in 2012. I graduated from NDSU with a major in psychology and a minor in art. After college, I learned how to install tile which led me to start my own tiling company. I currently install tile as my main career and do stained glass when I have days off. While I’m not doing stained glass, I’m either outdoors, backpacking, or working on house projects.

Describe what type of products you make under Foiled Again Glass?

Foiled Again Glass makes pieces out of stained glass, copper foil, and lead solder. These pieces generally are hanging pieces, but I’ve been working my way into 3D stained glass pieces. I haven’t gotten too far into repairing stained glass but that would be something that I would be willing to do.

Photos provided by Ashley Morken

Tell us how you got started with your businesses.

I started Foiled Again in 2023 when my partner Bee and I were clearing out old art supplies and we found a tote of art glass. Instead of getting rid of it, I started making things out of it and decided that I enjoyed doing stained glass. Foiled Again Glass was created because of the enjoyment of making stained glass. Though creating stained glass can be time-consuming and frustrating, it can also be very satisfying when everything lines up and comes together. The ideas I come up with are all over the place and silly because that is who I am—just a little odd. I’ve always been a little odd and that’s where I think if I were to talk to my younger self I would say, 'Do what you want to do, and don’t get hung up on being weird.'

What are your personal favorite items or pieces you've created so far?

I've created a big lantern piece that is probably my most favorite piece, aside from the cleavers. The lantern was a pattern that I found online and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. After spending time working on it, I came to really like the piece. I like the color and details that I put into it. It was also the biggest piece I’ve made so far.

What is the most popular item you specifically sell?

When I’m at the markets, people really relate to the X-rays and love to tell stories about the X-rays that they’ve had in the past. If the X-rays have done anything, they have created a conversation piece. People love to share with me their fun, crazy, and not going to lie, painful stories about their own injuries.

You have such a unique style with your stained glass. How did that develop and where do you see it going?

I think the vibe that I normally go for is random and out-there styles that have never really been done yet. I generally will come up with an idea, experiment with it, and see what works the best. I find inspiration from other stained glass artists

that I have talked to or have started to follow on social media. I think that I have always thought that there are some ideas that would look cool in a different style like stained glass. I’ve always liked alternative and unique ideas. I try to blend styles with my own to make something cool.

What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?

Getting into the maker's markets and being a creator has introduced me to new people who are just like me. Everyone in the community is so caring and supportive. Other makers are always trying to build you up and give you new ideas to explore. Everyone wants you to succeed in the maker’s communities which makes it so welcoming. Talking with other makers also gives you motivation and helps grow your ideas and perspective. There have been so many silly and great ideas that people will throw my way that I can’t keep track of them.

What is the most challenging thing?

I think the most challenging thing is keeping up with making glass and doing the back office part of owning a business.

What is one craft or art medium you haven't really dabbled in yet that you want to try someday?

I’ve always wanted to try glass blowing.

What is a word that best describes you? Odd

What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?

Do what makes you happy and find a way to make it work.

Where can people find your work?
