I'VE BEEN WAITING

ALL WINTER FOR THIS

"

I've been waiting all winter for this."

Throughout my entire life, that is the response I've gotten from my grandfather whenever I make a comment about how hot a day is in the summer. It doesn't matter if I'm making a casual observation or if I'm complaining because the heat is too hot, that's the response I got. As a child, I used to think, "this guy is crazy." Now, I appreciate the sentiment. That mindset is about embracing the now and learning to appreciate it. They say the grass is always greener on the other side. Maybe we should try thinking more about what we thought on the "other side" after we make the switch. Now that the heat of summer is here, let's get outdoors and enjoy the things we love about the season. For some, that means visiting the beloved patios, farmers' markets and more, so let's go!

SUMMERTIME AND THE

LIVING IS EASY

W

ith this warmer weather comes many of the other things we love about summer. One of my favorite parts of the season has always been soaking up as much of the outdoors as possible, which included eating my meals outside too. Whether it was enjoying a hotdog fresh off the grill at the lake or sipping sweet, yet tart, lemonade as my friends and I tried to sell it to the people driving by, summer reminds me of good food and even better memories. As we explored the Fargo-Moorhead area for the best patio spots and met the amazing business owners on the food truck scene, I was reminded of what I am truly grateful for in the summertime—the people around me. Of course, the immaculate dining is a plus in these good memories, but the people around me are the root of them. Whether you make time for Sunday brunch with your friends, an evening campfire complete with roasting marshmallows with your family, or a morning coffee by yourself, slow down and take the time to enjoy your summer... every last minute of it. Happy reading!

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL

By Alexandre Cyusa Photo by Josiah Kopp

Bringing the Juneteenth Culture to Fargo Happy June! As we get ready to welcome the summer solstice, I wanted to connect with someone who irradiates love in the community... Fredrick Edwards Jr: Fred has his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from NDSU. Fred is a community engagement specialist, motivational speaker, community educator, program coordinator and spoken word artist from North Minneapolis. The things he has seen speak through him with the energy he provides. He has spoken to hundreds of college, high school and middle school students. Fred provides testimonies and stories of struggle and resiliency. With nine brothers and sisters, Fred is the tenth and last child. Before he was born, his mother had her tubes tied—she had a .0001% chance of becoming pregnant after her last child. Fred was that .0001%. Fred thoroughly believes he is a spiritual being having a human experience. I hope to see you at the Juneteenth celebration! Peace & Love! Where do you call home? Minneapolis, Minnesota. I

was born and raised on the northside but developed my appreciation and respect for different cultures on the southside. Every other block, there is a church and a liquor store. You can find some of the best food here, ranging from Italian beefs, sambusas to cassava leaves to fried chicken and gyros to soul food and vegan dishes. When I was growing up, drug raids, absent parents and crime were prevalent. Additionally, there was significant talent, culture and a willingness to fight generational curses common to many inner-city neighborhoods like mine. The Story of your passion for giving to your community? My father is an apostle, and I grew up in church. I always remember seeing different international faith-based communities and cultures. Especially in the inner city, there were indigenous Christian rappers and Orthodox Ethiopian Christians, Hebrew Israelites, The Nation of Islam and so forth. My parents moved to Chicago, IL when I was 16, so I lived with my big sister Klairissa in a condo in the Midtown Global Market. Downstairs was a vibrant culture showcased in this marketplace through the way of food, art, produce

and international entertainment. The real-time experience allowed me to gain a better understanding of different cultures and their traditions. Share about June 19, 1865. When I think of Juneteenth growing up, it was a time to celebrate African Americans who fought to save the Union and liberate themselves from generations of chattel slavery. Juneteenth continues to be a day in which Black families and communities come together in the spirit of jubilation and liberation to honor the brave fight of our ancestors and a longstanding tradition of Black resilience. Now I’m seeing it become slightly commercialized to bring all Americans together to celebrate our common bond of freedom through recognition, observance and education. What are some misconceptions on this historical date? Texas was the last state to allow chattel slavery after the Civil War enslavement. The emancipation was not announced in the last state practicing enslavement until Major General Granger landed in Galveston, Texas and issued General Orders No. 3. Two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation chattel slavery was still happening. What this tells me is that Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had very little power to free slaves in the confederacy. Secondly, we never discuss the 29th Colored Troops who defeated Robert E. Lee and traveled to Galveston Texas with General Granger. Can you share some of the work you do in the community? How can people get involved? I currently work at Youthworks (YW) located here in Fargo, ND. I am a program coordinator for the street outreach program, a case manager for the Youth Cultural Achievement Program and Co-Founder of Umoja Writing Workshops powered through YW. I am also able to volunteer writing workshops at the West Regional Detention center a few times a month. I am the founder of Freds

Dissonance where we do sober fun and cultural events in Fargo, ND. If people want to get involved, they can follow me on my social or check out the website, or come to an event. As a community leader, what is the next problem you are trying to solve? I see myself as someone who has been surrounded by a lot of amazing people. During the pandemic, a lot of people struggled with mental health, money and loving themselves. I felt division my entire life, but I felt families and loved ones get divided. My biggest things right now are helping people feel like they belong and matter. I want to help build a platform to help people heal through art. Poetry and writing saved my life and I’m watching it positively impact the youth I work with. I want Umoja to expand to impact not only Fargo Public schools, but West Fargo and Moorhead Schools. I see Youthworks providing a various number of services for youth and their families. We have a 24/7 crisis line. We help and support our under-served youth. It is my hope we continue to grow and get the support and funding needed to help those in tough situations. I’ve seen my organization save lives and change people for the better. What is your vision for 2030 for the Fargo-Moorhead community? Fargo, ND, is the 4th largest growing city in America. Ten years ago, Black residents made up 2.7% of Fargo residencies. In 2020, Black residents made up 8.8% of Fargo's ND population. I want us to be the fastest-growing city in America that not only accepts culture but cultivates and creates spaces for it to grow. I want the residents of Fargo to assist each other in healing, sharing ideas and building a common agenda for change. Together, we are generating sustainable progress that propels diverse people groups' prosperity and well-being in the end. I would love there to be a Global Market in Fargo, ND by 2030 that hosts the largest cultural events, and of course Fargo Juneteenth 2030.

Artist Feature:

“I call it ‘Spool Samples,' ” Judi Koehmstedt laughingly displays a small painting of the spools of thread she recently found in her mother’s old sewing machine. The play on words and cheerful colors are characteristic of an art career that has spanned nearly 50 years.

As one of the current members of the artist cooperative, Gallery 4, located in downtown Fargo, Judi has come a long way from her first art lesson. “When I lived in Langdon [ND], a local minister was an artist, and for three or four years he came every week to teach art in the courthouse. When he started, there were about 35 students all excited to take classes. Within three months there were only two of us! The charge for classes was minimal, but I had no money, so sometimes I would give him antique frames I found in old barns as payment.” Despite having four children in a six-year time span and working the night shift in nursing homes as a geriatric nurse for 30 years, Judi has always found a way to pursue her art; taking classes and workshops whenever she could fit them into her active schedule.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS

Being original is the hardest thing, I think. Trying to come up with something that is just yours. I like realism and nostalgia. Things from my farm when I was a kid, which is why I love barns and old cars. I see an old pickup truck and I just want to paint it. Or people. I love to paint people, especially when I watch them doing things that are just a little bit offbeat. I love art. It is always fun.” 46 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

“I remember when I first found out about acrylic painting. I didn’t know what I was doing, and it would dry so fast. I would go to my room in the evening and cry.” Judi has proven that learning and persistence have their rewards, as she is now a multi-award-winning artist widely known for both her acrylic and watercolor work represented in regional and local shows all over the upper Midwest. Her multitudes of learning experiences over the years have resulted in a unique viewpoint all her own. With a glimpse, it's no struggle to find originality in Judi’s work. The familiar subjects are rendered with eye-catching bright colors and engaging compositions which hold the viewer’s attention. Her sense of humor is apparent in the quirky titles she bestows upon her creations, and her enjoyment of the process is equally visible in her playful brushstrokes.

THERE IS

NOTHING LIKE THIS IN THE AREA! AREA!

Shoot 360 is bringing unprecedented technology to hoopers in the FM area

It

all started with a Google search. Josh Johnson, Owner of Fargo Basketball Academy was looking for the next big thing, a way to improve his already established basketball training facility. And he knew that whatever that might be, it probably had a technological component to it. That search eventually led him to Shoot 360. At the time that Johnson first reached out, there were only four Shoot 360 stores in existence with locations in Portland, O.R., Vancouver, W.A., Los Angeles, C.A. and Indianapolis, I.N.,

meaning it was time to take a trip out west. "Immediately when I walked into the LA store with the manager, I was blown away," Johnson said. "I came back to town and told my wife that we had to do this immediately." From there, Johnson began a process of bringing Shoot 360 to the Fargo market—a process that would take a few years. "I went out to meet the company's founder, Craig Moody," Johnson said. "What is funny is that we actually already knew each other. I used to coach basketball in Portland and

that's where he's from so I kind of knew him already. We hit it off right away, but I don't think he would have bet on Fargo as early as he did if we didn't have those mutual connections." Now, Shoot 360 is here and it's truly disrupting the local basketball market for the better.

What is Shoot 360? Shoot 360 brings basketball training, technology and video gaming together for the ultimate basketball training and competition experience. At the heart of the Shoot 360 technology is the capability to track a shot's 3 important components: the arc, the depth and its right-left positioning in relation to the center of the hoop. Shoot 360 does all of this while offering multiple game options and assisted rebounding.... And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Fargo's Shoot 360 facility also features interactive bays where athletes can practice their handles and passing abilities.

Q&A With Josh Johnson What blew you away about the technology? There isn't really one thing. It's kind of the whole package that makes you say "wow."

How do the Fargo Basketball Academy and Shoot 360 accommodate one another?

Even though they are two separate businesses, they are only separated by a wall and they really do feed off of each other.

You can go in as a beginner and get involved in the gaming aspect of it or you can come in as a DI athlete or even an NBA athlete and get just as What is the Fargo intense of Basketball Academy? a workout. It's the overall feel, the overall look, the overall environment. This is the future of basketball.

The Fargo Basketball Academy is a basketball training facility located along 52nd Avenue South in Fargo featuring fantastic instructors who have played at every competitive level, including the NBA. The facility sits directly next to Shoot 360 and has both private and group lessons available. Don't play basketball? They also have volleyball instructors and lessons.

Josh Johnson and his wife Katie Johnson, who runs the entire Fargo Basketball Academy side of the operation.

At Fargo Basketball Academy, you have the old school traditional classroom setting where kids of all ages and skill levels can come and learn that way. On the Shoot 360 side, you have the opportunity to experience the new age technology and, at times, we'll kind of merge the two and even do private FBA lessons on the Shoot 360 side. How did you come into ownership of the Fargo Basketball Academy? We moved back to the Fargo area from Portland in 2017 and I was working for my father-in-law who was a real estate developer in town. I loved that and I enjoyed being there, but I just needed to get back with the sport, with kids and be my own boss. My son was taking FBA classes like any normal kid and one day when I was picking him up, the light bulb went off and I eventually called the founder, Tom Wilberscheid, and

58 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

asked him if he would ever sell the place. We had a few meetings after that and he thought about it for three or four months before we got a contract signed. Was this your first foray into entrepreneurship? No. I've owned several businesses. The first time I lived in Fargo, from 2006 to 2011, I ran a basketball tournament business. I've always been an entrepreneur. What's your favorite part about coaching kids? It's the relationship with the kids. Whether they end up playing basketball or not, it's the smile you see on their face. I get a lot of gratification out of being able to positively impact kids on a daily basis.

Sometimes they want to talk about anything but basketball. They want to tell you all about how they did on a test or what they did on the weekend or how they played in their game. Sometimes when you see them in public, they'll just run up to you and start talking. That's the most gratifying part is making a positive. impact in their lives.

air Hills resort is home to many things, but arguably the most important, it houses almost a centennial of memories. Since 1926, the same family has owned the resort and has transformed it into what it is today. In the summertime, you will find friends out on the golf course, families sitting around the campfire, children exploring with their day camp counselors and so much more. The current resort President and Owner, along with her husband and sister, Beth Schupp is the fourth generation in her family to own

and operate the resort, and there have been many other family members to share that journey. In 1926, Beth’s great grandfather and grandfather came from Glenwood, MN and bought the resort. Years later, in 1974, Beth’s father took over the resort. Before the torch was passed down yet again, Beth, her husband and their family moved away before returning to the shores of Pelican Lake. When Beth took over the resort in 2006, and while the family had already spent years there and knew the resort well, this adventure would be a new one for the

family. Even though the thought of overtaking an entire resort seemed daunting, they knew between the guests, staff and each other, they would have many more years of enjoying their second home to come. Beth’s daughter, Emily Meyers, grew up running around the resort just like her mother, and now she serves as the resort’s creative director, handles the advertising, website, and social media, and runs the Wildflower Golf Course across the road from the resort entrance.

Although running the resort is the family’s full-time job, it's not just a job. Between both sides of the family, there a lot of history surrounding the resort. “There is a lot of family history on both sides of my family because my folks met here when my dad's family would vacation for two weeks every summer. So there are a lot of memories,” Emily said. “When we met he was at eight and I was six,” Beth explained.

“And then Emily's husband was working here, their family has a cabin just three cabins away from Fair Hills, and they met 20 years ago probably. We have another daughter who met her husband here when she was about probably six or seven also, their family came every year from Iowa.”

These repeat vacationers are part of what makes Fair Hills so special, and what allows special bonds to be created. Be that between guests, between staff and even between the staff and those families they work with every day. Families visit from South Korea, Germany, England and all over the United States and have found their spot at Fair Hills. In addition to international families staying there, they employ a lot of international workers who love to spend their summers at the resort. “[I got] an email from a girl who came every year in the summertime and I used to play with her,“ Beth said. “She lives in London and was at a conference in Germany. They were having this get-to-know-you meeting and she ran into Bogdan, who came from Eastern Europe and worked here around 20 years ago. He was one of our first foreign students, and they're connected through this Fair Hill's memory.” “There are stories like this all the time, which sound kind of incredible, but honestly, it happens all the time,” Emily said. The people who share these experiences at Fair Hills resort are able to do so through all of the inclusive activities and programming they offer. Anything from golf, tennis, or waterskiing lessons or tournaments to

baking, scavenger hunts, or capture the flag with rec directors. Spread across 40 acres of land, anyone of any age can find something they will enjoy. Children have the opportunity to do things independently, while parents can find times to relax; and at the same time, the entire family can spend time together in activities as well. Just about every activity that Fair Hills offers, is included in their packages.

“We have shuffleboard, we have kayaks, we have canoes, and we have paddle boats. We have a basketball court, playground, pool, and hot tub. A nine-hole golf course that you can go golf at any time, there's frisbee golf, four tennis courts, six pickleball courts, and a partridge in a pear tree,” Emily said. You can go on morning walks that are led to explore the area, attend fitness classes like yoga and tai chi, and even visit the nighttime programming like campfires, sing-alongs, and bingo. The coolest part? Most of these activities are long-held traditions that have been incorporated into the resort for many years. One of the longest-standing traditions still held at Fair Hills is their hootenanny. Every Tuesday night, the staff put on a musical show for the guests. Throughout the week,

you may find many activities that involve some sort of music, another tradition that has planted its roots in Fair Hills. Some of the other traditions are weekly talent shows (a winning T-shirt prize included!), a Wednesday night sing-along and cocktail hour on the deck overlooking Pelican Lake, and a picnic on the big boat the same night for the kids. While many of the traditions and memories still live on, the resort itself has seen some changes and growth in its many years in operation. What began as a few cabins scattered on the land, is now over 100 different cabins for families to enjoy while staying at the resort. But as the resort saw new spaces being built or the installation of wifi, the feeling that was first created by its guests

80 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

and families many years ago has stayed the same. “I feel like so many things have changed in the last few generations as far as communication, technology, and so on. You can come here and have the same experience as your grandfather did,” Emily said. “I really value the fact that people disconnect when they're here. You can be as busy as you want or as relaxed as you want, but I think it gives you an opportunity to reconnect with your family and your loved ones in a way that just doesn't happen in everyday life all that often.” Whether you’re visiting Fair Hills Resort for a work retreat, a wedding or a family vacation, don’t travel far to find a whole new world for you and your family.

HowtoCatch

Big Cats on The Red River By Brady Drake

Although it is right in our backyard, most fishing enthusiasts in the metro don't know how to fish the Red River.

M

any who do try their hand at fishing the mighty red are discouraged by constant snags, and others don't even make an attempt at the fast-flowing body of water, which is unfortunate because fishing the Red can offer anyone who partakes a unique experience. Playing the river is a delicate game, there are tricks to the trade. What's more, the payoff can be exhilarating! Catfish on the Red River can weigh over 30 pounds, and you'll feel every bit of that in the fight they put up. 82 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Whether you're looking for something fun to do with the kiddos (or you just need to get away for a bit), no one should be discouraged about fishing in their backyard. We spoke with a man who is very passionate about fishing for catfish on the Red River, You Betcha Videographer and Personality Tyler Ziegler, to get a few tips.

You Betcha personality / cameraman and fishing enthusiast, Tyler Ziegler

Catching The Catfish Bait You can use many different types of bait to catch catfish, however, you'll want to make sure you're using something smelly. People have used everything from hot dogs to pieces of raw chicken. However, one of the most commonly used baits for catfishing on the Red River is goldeye. Anglers will typically fish to catch goldeye, which are legal to use as they're classified as a "rough" fish. First, we will teach you how to fish for

goldeye, then we will teach you how to fish for catfish.

Did you know? The State Record for largest channel catfish is 41 lbs 1 oz and was caught by Tina Willis on Moon Lake in 2009. 83

#1 The Setup The Hook When fishing for goldeye, you're going to use a regular hook and you want your bait close to the river bottom. However, you don't want your hook sinking all the way to the bottom where you'll find yourself dealing with constant snags.

The Bobber Just about any bobber will do. However, the position of the bobber is very important. "I want my bait to be about a foot off the bottom of the river," Ziegler said. "So, the position of my bobber will be based on the depth of the water that I'm fishing in at the time."

Some Places in Town You Can Buy Nightcrawlers » Fargo Bait & Tackle

#2 The Bait "For goldeyes, I typically use nightcrawlers or power bait if I have to," Ziegler said. "But 9 times out of 10, I'll go to the bait shop and get nightcrawlers."

» SCHEELS » Fleet Farm » Walmart

#3 Getting That Line In The Water Although you'll be using a bobber when fishing for Goldeye, you'll still be casting and reeling due to the current of the water. "When I'm fishing for my cutbait, I'm going to cast as far upstream as I can," Ziegler said. "Then, I'll let it float downstream until it starts to come back towards the bank. Then, you'll reel it back in and cast again. 84 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Catching The Big Cats! #1 The Setup The Rod When fishing for catfish, Tyler Ziegler says he actually likes to use his worst rods. He does this because when catfishing, you won't be casting and reeling, you'll be playing the waiting game. Rather than doing this with the catfish rod in his hands the entire time, he will find a nice Y-shaped stick to support his fishing rod. Then he will drive the stick vertically into the ground and will place the rod between the extending arms of the stick in order to hold it in a vertical fashion as well. During this method, the handle of the fishing rod will also be driven into the rod. Now, obviously, nobody wants their nice fishing rods getting all dirty, however, there is another reason why Ziegler chooses to use his lower quality rods for the catfish setup. A fishing rod resting against a Y-shaped stick Photo by Geneva Nodland

86 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

"Catfish can be quite large and oftentimes the river can be quite a bit lower than the bank," Ziegler said. "So, sometimes, if you don't have a net with you or an opportunity to net the fish you're reeling in, you'll have to hoist the fish up onto the bank. With all of that in play, you run the risk of losing or breaking a rod. So, I choose

to use my crappier ones." However, that isn't to say that it's a bad idea to invest in a heavier rod that is specifically designed for catfishing. Ziegler used to do this himself before gifting the fishing rod to a fellow angler. "My philosophy now is to use a lighter-weight rod because it's more fun to catch smaller fish because they feel bigger," Ziegler said with a smile. Note: Just because Ziegler catches a goldeye doesn't mean he totally abandons that rod. The stationary setup of the catfishing rod allows him to continue to cast and reel until he has a sufficient amount of cutbait for his outing. Once that is done, the real fun begins. "One of my favorite things about catfishing is that you don't have to actively fish once you have your cutbait. You can do a lot of other things. Sometimes my friends will bring bean bag boards or will have a bonfire or just drink beer and play cards. That's when I'll put a bell on the tip of my catfishing rod as well so I don't have to actively watch it for the action."

When fishing for catfish on the Red River, you're going to want your bait as close to the river bottom as possible because channel catfish, the type of catfish found in the mighty Red, typically feed near the bottom of the river. However, again you don't want your hook sinking all the way to the bottom where you'll find yourself dealing with constant snags. That's why you'll want to use a floating jig.

The Weights But wait, won't a "floating jig" just float to the top of the river? That's where the weights come in. The size: According to Ziegler, "You want your weight to be heavier than the heaviest split shot weight you can find." For those unfamiliar with what a split shot is, we have included a photo below:

Here is a weight more similar in size to what you would use while fishing for catfish. However, Ziegler said that you can go even heavier!

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS

The Positioning While fishing for catfish your going to want to position your weights about two feet away from your hook to start. The true ideal position, according to Ziegler, is about 1 and 1/2 feet from the hook, however, there is a method to the madness. "I put my weight about two to two and a half feet away from the hook because then if my hook comes off or my line breaks or something, all I have to do is re-tie the hook and not worry about the distance between that and my weight." Ziegler said.

#2 The Bait As discussed, you will be using your cutbait to bring home the big cats. However, in case you get skunked on the goldeye, it may not be a bad idea to bring along any of the following for bait just in case: » » » » » »

Liver Hot dogs Chicken Soap Minnows Any form of stink bait

When using cutbait however, almost any part of the goldeye should work. Though Ziegler prefers to use a portion of the fish that includes the eye. "It's easier to hook it through the eye," Ziegler said. "Plus, the smaller the bait, the more likely the fish is to get the whole hook in its mouth."

#3 Getting That Line In The Water Once you have your catfishing rod all set up with a nice place to rest your fishing rod, it's time to get your line in the water but you shouldn't just cast anywhere. If you really want to have success fishing for big cats on the Red River, you're going to want to play a delicate little game. "The biggest double-edged sword when it comes to catfishing is you want to fish around structure," Ziegler said. "You'll want to find a downed tree or bend in the river where the water hits something and starts to slow down—that's where you want your 88 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

bait. But, in order to get it there, you have to cast upstream and wait for it to settle there. When you do this, you run the risk of casting towards the structure and getting caught in it—that's where the double-edged sword comes in. Regardless though, if you find a good spot that has a massive structure near a bend and you can cast upstream and let it settle in a spot with a swirl, then don't tell anybody in the world about it because you'll probably be hitting the jackpot."

I came to Fargo first in 2014 and stayed for one year due to a career opportunity. I went to NDSU as a visiting researcher where I worked on my science project. I am a scientist and I currently work at NDSU as a research specialist. In 2017, I came to Fargo to marry my American husband, Nick, and now we have our son Victor (2-years-old) and we have a rescued dog named Floid. What type of products you make? I make scented candles and other fragrances. My candles are made with all natural and sustainable coconut wax (no paraffin added) and premium fragrance oils. Our candle aromas are inspired by our memories and they are unique and exclusive. Every aroma has a story behind it.

Tell us how you got started with candlemaking? I first started candlemaking in 2020 when my great friend Graciela (and now business partner) taught me about it and about her business Medievo. Then I started learning about it and I loved it. I was always obsessed with making my home smell good, so a scented candle is something that brings pleasure and comfort to my home. Tell us about your business name? Medievo comes from the Medieval era. And it was inspired by a tea store located in Granada, Spain, where my business partner Graciela lived and fell in love with that store. So, she decided to name her business Medievo. What is your personal favorite scent you have created? To be honest, I love all my aromas and it is hard to pick one. Each aroma is so unique and complex. But if I have to pick I would say that The Brazil Collection is my favorite because it was inspired by my

home country, so it has a special place in my heart. Your business partner is in Brazil—can you tell us a bit about how this works? Medievo was first created in Brazil in 2019 by my great friend Graciela. In 2021, after my friend taught me how to make candles and the values of Medievo (which I fell in love with), she invited me to start Medievo in the USA. And I did not think twice and I said yes. Our partnership is more intellectual. Together we create and develop everything for Medievo. I do not import candles here, I make all of them at my home studio. But all the creation of the aromas, names, packaging and the list goes on, Graciela and I do together. What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business? What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business? What is the most challenging thing? A candle business is not only candlemaking, I need to think about

inventory, marketing, taxes, social media and more. Marketing and social media are the most challenging for me. But I am learning a lot and finding some fun in it.

Where can we stay connected?: www.medievocandles.com @medievocandles_usa (Instagram) @medievocandles.usa (Facebook)

What is a word that best describes you? Persistent. I do not like to quit easily. I can sometimes slow down to give me some time, but I am for sure a very persistent person. And being like that I find motivation to study, work harder and always improve things around me. What advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago? I would tell myself to be more patient and to be more resilient. Nowadays, comparing myself to 10 years ago, I am learning those lessons a little bit at a time. And candlemaking requires a lot of patience and resilience. Where can people find your work? The best place to find Medievo is through our website (www.medievocandles.com) and social media below!

About Zandbroz Variety "In 1988, brothers Jeff and Greg Danz had a dream to open a store that they would want to shop at. So they bought an empty turn of the century building in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They spent a year restoring the building and developing the concept for what would become Zandbroz Variety. When the doors opened in May of 1989, Zandbroz was a bookstore with an eclectic mix of other inventory, an old fashioned soda fountain, and a coffee bar. The store was embraced by the community and a couple of years later a second location was opened in the heart of downtown Fargo, ND. Zandbroz Variety started in a world before Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, and internet shopping was part of the landscape. That of course all changed and so too Zandbroz has evolved and changed – THIRTY years later and we are still here!" -From the Zandbroz Variety website 96 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Books About The Region A courageous American story about justice and holding the powerful to account, The Farmer's Lawyer by Sarah Vogel shows how the farm economy we all depend on for our daily bread almost fell apart due to the willful neglect of those charged to protect it, and what we can learn from Sarah's battle as a similar calamity looms large on our horizon once again.

Yellow Bird: Oil, Murder, and a Woman's Search for Justice in Indian Country by Sierra Crane Murdoch traces Lissa Yellow Bird's steps as she obsessively hunts for clues to Kristopher "KC" Clarke's disappearance. When Lissa Yellow Bird was released from prison in 2009, she found her home, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota, transformed by the Bakken oil boom. In her absence, the landscape had been altered beyond recognition, her tribal

In Jung Yun's O Beautiful: A Novel, Elinor Hanson, a fortysomething former model, is struggling to reinvent herself as a freelance writer when she receives an unexpected assignment. Her mentor from grad school offers her a chance to write for a prestigious magazine about the Bakken oil boom in North Dakota. Elinor grew up near the Bakken, raised by an overbearing father and a distant Korean mother who met and married when he was stationed overseas. After decades away from home, Elinor returns to a landscape she hardly recognizes, overrun by tens of thousands of newcomers.

government swayed by corporate interests, and her community burdened by a surge in violence and addiction. Three years later, when Lissa learned that a young white oil worker, Kristopher “KC” Clarke, had disappeared from his reservation worksite, she became particularly concerned. No one knew where Clarke had gone, and few people were actively looking for him. She navigates two worlds—that of her own tribe, changed by its newfound wealth, and

that of the non-Native oilmen, down on their luck, who have come to find work on the heels of the economic recession. Her pursuit of Clarke is also a pursuit of redemption, as Lissa atones for her own crimes and reckons with generations of trauma. Yellow Bird is an exquisitely written, masterfully reported story about a search for justice and a remarkable portrait of a complex woman who is smart, funny, eloquent, compassionate, and—when it serves her cause—manipulative.

In 1930, Fargo was a winner in a region where winning came hard. As the commercial center for the vast, sparsely settled Northern Plains, it grew even during the Depression, attracting hopeful entrepreneurs off the farm. In Going It Alone, historian David B. Danbom shows how the city struggled to survive problems it could not solve by itself. A critical complement to Depression histories focused on federal policies and programs, this study demonstrates how Washington's initiatives for relief played out in a community of people born into a steadfast culture of self-sufficiency and independence.

Historian Carroll Engelhardt’s Gateway to the Northern Plains chronicles the story of Fargo and Moorhead’s birth and growth.

The Good Hand: A Memoir of Work, Brotherhood, and Transformation in an American Boomtown by Michael Patrick F. Smith highlights his time in Williston during the oil boom where he searched for the hardest work he could do—to find out if he could do it. He was hired on in the oil patch where he toiled fourteen-hour shifts from summer's 100 degree dog days, deep into the winter's bracing whiteouts, all the while wrestling with the demons of a turbulent past, his broken relationships with women, and the haunted memories of a family riven by violence. 99

The Advice That Helped him Get There Jona than Hol th Endeavors ’s Community

What it takes for success The path to success is hardly ever traveled alone, and rarely comes without a few bumps in the road. There's often a multitude of factors that play into one person's climb to the top of their ranks. We spoke with a handful of determined and successful people with ties to the Fargo-Moorhead area regarding what, and who, they believe helped them find success in the area we're proud to call home.

Jonathan Holth has a busy work schedule, to say the least. Holth is a co-owner of the revitalized Urban Stampede in Grand Forks, as well as a co-owner of The Toasted Frog, which boasts three locations (Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck). On top of that, he’s acted as the Community & Client Development Manager at JLG Architects for the past four years, specializing in corporate business development. Today, he’s balancing his multiple ventures while raising a family that includes three young children.

His life may not have always been this much of a juggling act, but his business ventures didn’t get to the status they’re at today without putting in the necessary work. Holth stated that “I used to spend a lot of late nights and weekends building them. In business ownership, you don’t get to clock out. Ever.” However, after putting in the work to get them off the ground, he was able to change his position within the business. “It reached a point where I had a very high-quality business partnership and team management in each location, where I felt comfortable

stepping away from the dayto-day operations. I was able to then work full-time for JLG and still stay involved with the businesses in terms of strategy and overseeing management, but it didn’t come without the necessary work I had to put in to get there.” Over the years, he’s learned advice through firsthand experience, trial and error and plenty of other learning moments that shaped Holth into the entrepreneur he is today. Holth was happy to share a handful of the tips and tricks for success when pursuing a business venture.

#1

Don’t try to be an expert at everything. When my business partner and I started our business, we tried to build everything from the ground up by ourselves. We quickly realized that by not hiring other experts, we were stretching ourselves too thin and it was costing us more money, stress and pain in the long term.

116 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

#2

The most important decision you'll make will be selecting the people that you partner with and employ. Everything will fall into place if you can surround yourself with people with the right intentions.

The Urban S t acquir ed by a mpede was his business Hol th and in June of 2 par tners 020.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS

#3

Stay agile and nimble and be able to change quickly. When you go in and have an idea, you’ll often realize that the public will want something different. The original idea for The Toasted Frog was a high-end bar with small plates of food. However, people were craving a different style than what was available in the community at the time, so we began offering full entrees and more soon after we opened.

#4

Fun Fact!

The Urban St ampede is the oldest co ffee shop in North Dakot a.

Offer non-traditional employment packages that stick out.

Offering job qualities that most businesses have (the hospitality industry, in our case) will be a huge help when attracting and retaining employees. Nontraditional qualities that we offer include 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, paying employees while they’re in treatment if needed so they don’t fall behind on rent and allowing a simple mental health day if necessary. Their health matters to us and the business side can wait if need be. While these are unique to our requirements, a little compassion can go a long way for employees.

118 | JUNE 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

#5 Do what brings you joy.

I’ve come to realize that I’m not interested in doing anything that doesn’t either bring me joy or joy to other people. Everything that I do in my career for all of the businesses that I work for, I look for a tie-in at the end to create that joy. If you don’t see the connection, it’s best to nip it in the bud as quickly as you can.

#6

Don’t assume that your ideas are always the best. Most of the time, they’re not going to be the best. A lot of our menu comes from customer dialogue and just trying out things that people want to see and seeing what sticks. It’s best to listen to others and what people want. After all, they’re going to be the ones coming back time and time again.

While Holth may have learned many of these through personal moments, it’s rare that successful people don’t climb the ranks without mentorship. When asked who some of his biggest mentors were, he was quick to state two that he was thankful to have during his journey. “I really leaned on my dad a lot. He was sort of a serial entrepreneur, buying and selling a number of businesses over the years,” Holth said. “He’s the person I go to for advice since he understands business and kindness, and those two don’t always mix easily. From a consulting perspective, the price is right since he has to take my calls!” “Kim Holmes was my primary mentor in the restaurant industry. He was the one that told me I had a career in the business if I wanted it. The next thing you know, I dropped out of college and pursued that vision. I got to see firsthand when working for him that he was always one to take care of and believe in his people from the beginning. That was before it was the norm to advertise and push that from a leadership perspective,” Holth said.
