et’s talk about the word oxymoron. The pairing of two words that have completely different meanings. For example: great depression, living dead, awfully pretty, tiny elephant or, as is the case of this month, fashionable Andrew Jason.
Today” to speaking at conferences and the daily interviews with some of Fargo’s biggest names, I’ve discovered I’m not just representing myself, but the magazine as a whole. It’s important to dress like you know what you’re doing even if I sometimes feel like I have no clue.
Go back to my younger days, and the idea of me editing a shopping magazine would be ridiculous. While wearing my painter jeans with holes that were a size too big and a T-shirt that was probably two sizes too big, I would have scoffed at the idea that I would spend my month going around shopping in the name of journalism. With the help of our talented, and impeccably-dressed, associate editor Erica Rapp, I’m now a believer in the power of looking good.
While many people are going online for their shopping needs, let’s not forget about the brick and mortar stores that are owned by people who live in our community. According to an Andersonville Study of Retail Economics, for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 will stay in the community. When you shop at a national chain, only $43 stays in the community. These small business owners all have the goal of improving our community, one product at a time. Let’s show our support for them by seeing what they offer and looking our best this year.

ocal resident Lindsey Volker is the owner and artist behind Art and Fawn, a jewelry company that features original, hand-painted pieces with beautiful touches of art and nature. She got the idea to start making jewelry after her grandmother passed away and she inherited some of her old jewelry. A particular vintage pendant, similar to the ones she makes now, caught her eye and planted the idea in her head to try and make one just like it with her own paintings.

With a love of painting and a background in graphic design, the art of jewelry making has become the perfect hobby for Volker. It took a great deal of trial and error and experimenting with different materials to perfect her detailed look, but the outcome has been quite successful. Volker takes her beautiful crafts to many shows, including the Unglued Craft Fest, Corks and Canvas, Junk Market and more. Turkey Roasting M ost families celebrate Thanksgiving with a smorgasbord of side dishes to accompany a roasted turkey. None of those seem to have any relevancy unless the main attraction is successfully pulled off. If the turkey is dry and bland, the complementing side dishes won’t seem nearly as complementary. Identify the turkey. Natural or organic turkeys typically provide greater quality compared to your average run-of-the-mill frozen turkey. If a fresh local turkey is available, that’s the way to go. Also, plan for approximately one and a half pounds per person.

Don’t stuff the turkey. If you want nice, crispy skin then you need to allow air movement in the cavity during cooking time. A small amount of aromatics in the cavity is fine, but keep it minimal.

the brine. If your turkey is self-basing or injected, then it doesn’t do any good to brine. It will end up being overly salty. Otherwise, brining is a good idea and will lead to greater flavor and moisture.

thaw time. Allow one day of thaw time for every four pounds of turkey. It typically takes four to five days total. Unwrapping the turkey one day in advance under refrigeration will help provide a crispier, roasted exterior.

Generously season the exterior and the cavity with salt and pepper before cooking. Season the bottom of the turkey as well.

Start with a hot oven. A 30-minute blast at 450 degrees will help caramelize the skin. If the skin is browning too quickly, you can always tent the surface with aluminum foil.

Don’t overcook the turkey. Use a real thermometer, not a pop up. Place the instant-read thermometer in the thigh. The turkey should be pulled from the oven at 165 degrees. Any further than that and you’re just asking for a bone-dry experience.

don't fret pink meat. If the leg meat is slightly pink near the bone, don’t freak out. As long as you cooked it to 165 degrees, you’re safe. All turkeys and chickens will have a slight pinkness near the leg bone. It's perfectly safe. In closing, I’d like to say that turkeys don’t make you sleepy. Over-eating makes you sleepy. So, seriously, stop blaming tryptophan for your napping. Think about it. When’s the last time a turkey sandwich for lunch forced you into a nap? Anyhow, happy Thanksgiving! 59

Can you talk about your decade of experience in the restaurant business? “I was in the kitchen for seven years at Ground Round. Eventually I worked my way into bartending, and then I did a little bit of both for a long time. Then I was offered a position here (Bulldog Tap) as a bartender by a couple of guys I used to work with at Ground Round. Then I just moved up the ranks here. I became a shift lead and supervisor and that led to bar manager.”
What do you like to experiment with when it comes to making new drinks? “We do a lot of shots. We’re a shot bar here. I love it when people come up and ask for a shot of whatever, then we get to mix a lot of interesting things together. We work with flavored vodkas a lot. It’s fun.”

JONNY LANG
Known for: Blues guitarist and musician A native of Fargo, Lang found success at the age of 16 with the release of his album “Lie To Me.� In the last 20 years, Lang has performed with acts such as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Sting and he played for President Bill Clinton at the White House. After battling alcoholism and drug abuse, Lang is now performing more gospel music and released his last album in 2013.

Known for: judge who ordered desegregation of all-white Little Rock Central High School

Davies High School in Fargo is named for this Crookston, Minn., native. He was the federal judge who stood against Orval Faubus, the governor of Arkansas, to desegregate Little Rock High School. After the Supreme Court ruled that all schools be segregated, Little Rock refused to admit nine black students. Governor Faubus ordered the National Guard to block admittance for these students. Davies ruled that the black students should be allowed to attend school at Little Rock High School. Davies continued to sit on the federal district court in Fargo. Born Robert Velline in Fargo in 1943, Vee gained a reputation with the rock band, The Shadows, in Fargo. In 1959, Ritchie Valends, The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly died in a plane crash on their way to a concert in Moorhead. The concert promoter decided to put the show on anyway with 15-yearold Vee performing. He quickly gained success and the rest is history, as he went on to record such hits as “Take Good Care Of My Baby," “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes” and “Rubber Ball”.
Schultz was the most-listened-to liberal radio talk show host in America. He briefly played for the Oakland Raiders before going into broadcasting, where he started off as a conservative talk show host on local station WDAY-AM. He worked his way up and eventually hosted “The Ed Show” for six years on MSNBC before being cancelled at the end of July. He now does daily podcasts on his website, wegoted.com.

She is most famous for when she lived in Iran doing reporting for NPR, BBC and other news outlets. On January 21, 2009, Saberi was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage, sparking an international controversy. After 100 days in prison, she was released and has continued her career as a journalist.

Tailgating If you haven’t been tailgating before a Bison home game, you’re truly missing out. Thousands fill the west parking lots of the Fargodome to gear up for game day. Here are some things to know. There are two lots. One is reserved and you need to reserve your spot before the season. The other lot is first come, first serve. That lot opens at 8 a.m. but you’ll want to get in line as early as possible. People have even waited in line overnight to get a spot.

If you don’t want to wait in line, everyone is welcome to walk around tailgating. It has the feel of a music festival. Stop by and make some new friends.

You’re allowed to drink alcohol, but make sure you bring a plastic cup to put it in. Also, if you’re bringing multiple drinks, make sure you put them in a cooler. If you’re walking around and someone offers you food, give them some cash. The "Midwest nice" often means people won’t ask for anything, but just offering goes a long way. Walk around and enjoy the sights. Make sure you don’t get stuck at one tent. There’s a lot to see. The lot closes half hour before kickoff. It’s very difficult to find someone, so make sure you have a detailed plan where to meet your friends. If you say, “Meet by the Bison flag,” you’ll be walking around for a while.

Have you ever been to Fargo? If so, what do you think of our little community up here? “I love it. We were there, the years kind of run together, but I feel like it was about two years ago that we were there. I can’t remember the name of the place. It was an indoor venue but I gotta say that everybody was so nice and you guys seem to really have something going on there. You guys have a great sense of humor up there and I just remember that wherever it was, we got to put our hands into concrete or something. Do you know where that is?” I know exactly where that is. That’s awesome. “They gave us a bunch of real great T-shirts. We go places and
and take. … You’ve got these two incredibly talented prolific individuals that have, and continued to live, very artistic lives in a very intent way. … We produce commercial art because this is what we do for our living, but their approach to art is anti-commercial. … The dynamic that Scott and Seth share with one another is very giving and loving. Their father instilled in them at a very early age that the world is tough and most people aren’t going to be on their side so they need to be on each others’ side and they need to be each others’ best friend because they’re brothers and that’s what they live by."

It’s really great. It’s a really unique place.” You’ve been with the band quite awhile. Take us through what the dynamic of what the band is like now. Did you ever feel like you had to squash sibling rivalries? “The good thing is that Scott and Seth (Avett) have a tremendous relationship. There’s a lot of give
It’s interesting that you bring that up because I was listening to some of your songs on Spotify and some like “I and Love and You” have close to 17 million listens, and some of your YouTube videos have over one million views. You said anti-commercialism, but are the number of views and listens important to you guys? “I hate to say it but I think I’m from a different generation personally. I’m 44 years old. These views aren’t anything new. In the past five, six years, it’s been an important dynamic in the music business. I don’t know what a million views means. That sounds like a lot to me. (Laughs) That sounds like that would translate to other things. I think it’s great. … I think that’s great that people are seeking that stuff out and watching it and enjoying it. Really, our goal, and the most important thing, is to be able to be out on the road and play shows, because I think that’s where the magic is for us. I think that if having YouTube views translates to there being a market to do that, I think that’s a great thing. It’s a positive thing.” Last question, anything you want to say to your fans in Fargo? What can we expect from your show? “It’s good to get back there. It’s going to be the last show of the year. We’re doing a New Year’s show and a couple other special things in December but it’s technically the last show of our touring year, so it should be the best show of the year. We’re going to be real happy to be there and we’re excited. Hopefully I’ll be able to see more of the actual town this time. We’re excited to be there.”

one are the images of the American farmer portrayed in the iconic painting “American Gothic” by Grant Wood. In its place, you’re more likely to see an image that’s more recognizant of the American teenager. Farmers are adapting 21st century technology to make it feasible to feed the world’s 7.3 billion people. A new film is coming to Fargo to highlight what the life of the American farmer is really like. We talked to Academy Award winning documentarian James Moll, who created the movie “Farmland,” about his movie and the new faces of farming.
Q TAKE US THROUGH THE GENESIS OF HOW THIS FILM CAME ABOUT. A “I had been wanting to make a film
around or about farming for quite a few years, just from my own general interest. I grew up in Los Angeles so I didn’t have very many opportunities to visit a farm, I can’t remember any. I had specifically thought about wanting to do something on farming. I never really had an angle. … My agents, who represent me for all of my film projects, mentioned that I should
speak to the USFRA (US Farmers and Ranchers Alliance) who was interested in supporting a documentary about farmers. I was concerned at first because it sounded like they wanted a commercial. Something to promote a specific agenda. I met with them and they said, ‘No. You can make it about whatever you want. You can film whomever you want. All you have to do is film on a real farm.’ I said, ‘Great.’ So I came up with the idea of the next generation of farmers.”
Q WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF FARMERS, THERE’S STILL THIS MISCONCEPTION. DID YOU APPROACH THIS PROJECT WITH ANY MISCONCEPTIONS THAT WERE SHATTERED WHILE YOU WERE FILMING? A “I approach all of my projects in a very open minded, impartial sort of way. If I go in with too many preconceived

notions or if I go in expecting a story to unfold a certain way, then I’m not doing my job. I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I did learn that the farmers certainly feel like they’re stereotyped by a lot of people and a lot of people don’t know what a farmer looks like. … I had a lot of people say to me, they did have misconceptions and they did have different ideas of what they do, what they look like. It’s funny, now that I’ve been on so many farms and I’ve gotten to know so many farmers, it seems ridiculous to me that so many people in our generation have no idea. They don’t know farming. They don’t know farmers. It’s such an important part of our lives. The people that are growing and raising our foods are foreign to us. That’s ridiculous. That’s one of the reasons I’m proud of the film. It really is serving the purpose of introducing people to the average family farmer.”

It’s not only part of their character and what they love; it can also be a good living or a moderate living. … There are even people like the young woman profiled in the farm, Margaret, who is a first generation farmer. She just happened upon a passion for farming while traveling the world and visiting other farms and farmers. She loves it and it’s a great passion for her. The passion for farming, the interest for farming and the business of farming will certainly keep farms going strong.”

It’s a shame. Certainly, while there are things that are wrong or can be improved, as in every business, the positive side of farming and farmers is something that we should know about. I’m surprised that there’s not more interest. After people see this film, misperceptions do change.”

A Nontraditional Love Story Local resident C.J. English, who was born and raised in Fargo, might seem like an ordinary woman, aside from the fact that she has written a memoir that recently hit No. 1 on Amazon Kindle in “Diaries and Journals.� Initially rejected by dozens of publishers, English not only took the dive into the world of self-publishing but also took a leap of faith by bringing her mesmerizing and scandalous love story to light. espite what the title, "Affairytale", might presume, the memoir goes far beyond the story of a woman’s affair. It’s a true story about the hard and dirty stuff that happens to everyone but nobody talks about. “The book isn’t 300 pages about having an affair. It’s 300 pages about a normal person in a marriage with a great guy and hardly any issues… but why couldn’t we get along?” said English. “Family values always said that you made your bed and now you lie in it, so I stayed.” English’s spell-binding memoir documents her struggles of being in an unhappy, mundane marriage and staying in a relationship despite the fact that she knew she had married the wrong person. In her time with her ex-husband, there had been someone else, a close family friend whom she had an undeniable connection with for years and is now her current husband. English knew that marriage didn’t have to be the way she was living it, until one night when she realized that she didn’t have to settle, that happiness in marriage was possible and you can truly find your “happily every after.”

“When I got together with my husband now, I really took that leap that (marriage) could be like that. It’s really good. I had no idea that marriage or relationships could be this good,” said English. Writing her story happened by accident. English had spent a good majority of her life in the health and nutrition industry and came up with the idea to write a weight-loss and recipe book. The project didn’t capture her attention thoroughly, and so she started writing about her love story and found that it came together much easier. “I didn’t have to pound down doors to get it through. Once I had my daughter and husband’s blessing, I knew I had to commit to it. And the ball just started rolling,” said English. She started the book three years ago and completed it this past May. Once English decided to go full-throttle with the memoir, she teamed up with Amanda McKinnon, a local marketer

The duo set up an extensive marketing plan to reach out to book bloggers and reviewers and got the word out through social media. English also reached out to dozens of agents and publishing companies, only to be turned away for reasons such as, “Great title, great premise, but we’re not looking for a new author.” That’s when English’s decision to self-publish the memoir came to fruition. According to English, Amazon has made it “easy and an option for individuals to selfpublish rather than having the gatekeepers be the only ones that

disseminate information.” Within a month of the book being published, it reached the No. 1 spot on Amazon Kindle's “Diaries and Journals” list and No. 4 on the “Love and Romance” list. Initially, the book was also available on Barnes and Noble’s Nook and other various e-book sites around the world, but now English says that by being exclusive to Amazon, the perks are much better. “It gets a lot of traffic and holds its own on Amazon. We’re working on a big push to take it to the next level, but Amazon was already a huge accomplishment,” said McKinnon.

English has received an immense amount of positive feedback and, with the help of McKinnon, doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon when it comes to getting her book even more recognition. “I was bracing for the worst, but the common theme in the reviews seems to be things like, ‘Don’t go by the title, it’s not a book about an affair,’ or ‘Everyone who has ever been in a crappy relationship should read this.’” At the end of the day, readers say that they are inspired by English’s tale to search for something better, to not settle and shoot for the stars.

P's Q's Growing up in Chicago, Rachel Stone was the oldest of four children and often found herself struggling to fit in, dealing with hardship and constantly wishing she could have someone to look up to and guide her along the way. That’s why Stone has developed P’s and Q’s Etiquette, a program through the local school systems that brings young women and girls together to help them find empowerment and success.

had always wanted a big sister, someone to talk to that could understand and give me advice. Now, I get to be that big sister for young women,” Stone said. When Stone moved to Fargo with her husband and children years ago, she knew
that she wanted to be involved with the community and was very interested in working with young people and early childhood literacy. That’s where she got her start with the Head Start program, a national organization that provides early childhood education and parent involvement services to low-income children and families. During her time volunteering in the community and working with Head Start, she was contacted by a modeling agency and soon found herself competing to be Mrs. North Dakota International in 2005. With a second-runner up win, her confidence soared and she turned right around the next year and took the crown, being the first African American woman

to take the Mrs. North Dakota International title in 2006. Using the Head Start program as her platform, she saw the honor of the crown as a huge opportunity to achieve her goals of spreading the word about the program and to get even more involved with helping today’s youth. After traveling the country and speaking in schools, Stone realized she needed to get involved with the school system, which didn’t prove the be the easiest task. To do so, she got a job serving lunch at Madison Elementary School and had such an impact on the children that the principal eventually made her a paraeducator, where she dealt with many students with behavioral issues.

Here’s a quick overview of the classes that Stone’s program offers. “Leader-licious” Teaching girls how to be a leader. Covers bullying, self-esteem, conflict resolution, relationships, education. “BeRare Model” Inner beauty, healthy eating, seeing the importance of adults, finding a role model and being one. “BeRare Girl” Focuses on the inside. Goals, dreams, selfesteem and breaking negative habits. “Table Etiquette 101” Manners, proper dinner and eating etiquette, posture, and various how-to’s.
“That’s when I knew there were unmet needs. Working with the staff, you see them struggling, and they don’t always have the time to help
with the internal stuff,” said Stone. “That’s why I wanted to develop this program, to be the middle man that can deal with these issues so that our children can get the most out of education.” Thus, P’s and Q’s Etiquette was born with a small group of girls through Stone’s church two summers ago. This past summer, the program saw growing success with classes being held through the school systems. Stone received a grant from the FM Area Women’s Foundation to make the program available to young girls outside the
school system, and she now teaches her classes through Madison Elementary and Horizon Middle School during school hours, after school and through the YMCA. Stone offers a variety of classes through P’s and Q’s that cover a range of topics such as finding role models, self-esteem, being a leader, bullying, table etiquette, the importance of education and taking responsibility for your actions. “My goal is to get them to realize that their choices now do have an effect on their future. You reap what you sow.
I want them to realize their talents and know that they can be successful,” said Stone. Stone has had a huge impact on the Fargo-Moorhead community and with today’s youth, and plans to grow her program all over the city to help even more children from all walks of life. “I was raised to serve and impact. I was taught that life is about more than just a pretty face and your status. It’s about purpose. I felt like it was my purpose to inspire young children,” expressed Stone. It’s pretty clear that she has done just that.

Craig Whitney is the President and CEO of the Fargo-MoorheadWest-Fargo Chamber of Commerce. We know it can be controversial to bring in speakers with a political background, but we fully believe in the power of the voice Giuliani has and are confident that his message will be applicable to business leaders from all walks of life. We encourage everyone to come to hear his message and join the discussion. Voices of Vision is about bringing people together. Not only have we seen support for this series from the community, but we are also incredibly thankful to our sponsors. Like all our events and programs, we wouldn’t be able to bring in such big names without their generous backing. One thing I’m particularly excited to be able to do is bring Giuliani to the Roger Maris museum at West Acres Mall. As you may know, he is a big New York Yankees fan, and a fan of Roger Maris. We anticipate that he will meet one of Maris’ grandsons Richie Maris of Principal Financial Group, who is one of The Chamber’s ambassadors. We will get to share the story of the Maris family and showcase our region even further, and that will be very special. It really is a privilege to bring these kinds of leaders to our region, and I very much look forward to Giuliani's message this month. Exposing our community’s members and business leaders to opportunities like this is important for us as a Chamber and only strengthens our understanding of the world while strengthening our own metro.

ver the last two months, I've spent much of my time outside our community. During this time, I've spent a week in South Dakota hosting events in Brookings, Rapid City and Sioux Falls. I've given a talk in Las Vegas on Fargo's Startup Community and facilitated a research weekend with Texas State University. I just completed a three-week trip in Bangalore, India working with students from Concordia College and Gustavus. During this time, it’s given me plenty of opportunity to reflect on what is special about our community. Below are five of the areas I'm most grateful for during this holiday season.

Walk into Startup Drinks on any given month and you'll see folks of multiple generations spending time together, discussing ideas. Our community is filled with students, recently retired folks, mid-career professionals and even Jim, our beloved 89-year-old living in a senior center. The richness of people with a diverse perspective coming together is special and we need to appreciate this. Mentorship goes two ways, and our community is ripe with folks of different ages spending time together.
Recently, Phil Soran from Minneapolis was in Fargo for the launch of Vidku and to give a talk at NDSU. He sent me a very complimentary email celebrating our community and our energy. He shared his belief that Fargo is at a special moment in history with a size that has extreme advantages. He was impressed by how quickly things come together and the ability to get folks engaged in a cause. I agree with Phil. We are big enough to have tremendous health care, education, tech companies, etc., yet small enough where we have access to one another.
For some, the dream in life is to be independent. Yet, this aspiration strips communities. For our region, we actually need each other. The strength of Brookings helps us. The strength of Wahpeton, N.D., helps us. Our region sticks together to support and celebrate one another. For our tech community, to attract the talent needed to fill the opportunities, we need multiple great opportunities for folks. We need our parks and attractions. We need our mall and our downtown. The beauty is, none of us can do it alone, and that creates a special energy and magnetism where we learn to trust and help one another out.

Going to different cities, I'm reminded of just how special many places in Fargo are: Greg Stumbo’s hidden coffee bar below The Loretta Building, Mark Weiler’s incredible gallery and Ashley Morken’s shop supporting local artists are all examples of folks that have created beautiful spaces. We also have an increasing amount of artists sharing their work on the Forum's walls in a hidden alley, all over the Meadowlark Building or behind 300 Broadway. These special spaces create memories that are cherished. We have tremendous talent creating unique spaces, sharing their work in galleries and shops and a community that has leadership thinking critical about a place where creatives want to live.
Walking the streets of Bangalore, I found myself homesick for folks on the street smiling at me. In Vegas, there were plenty of smiles shared, yet they came with what I believe was an ulterior motive. Our community is filled with kind, welcoming folks that are quick to say hello. Sure, it helps when the sun is shining and we aren't avoiding a snowstorm. However, I'm convinced that the kindness and generosity of our community is easy for guests to experience and being away from Fargo makes me appreciate this warmth even more.

Roughrider Ink & Iron Expo Back in October, the Roughrider Ink & Iron Expo rocked the Scheels Arena for its second year, which was bigger and better than ever. Live tattooing, seminars, motorcycles, live entertainment and more filled the arena to celebrate the area's wonderful tattoo and bike community for three days. Join the community in this kick-off to the holiday season that's presented by the Downtown Community Partnership and sponsored by Xcel Energy. This parade attracts thousands of spectators throughout the Fargo-Moorhead community and includes hundreds of participants that decorate their entries with lights. This magical evening will feature spectacular parade floats, marching units, equestrian entries and more.
