What do you like about Fargo? I like the feeling of community and the friendliness of people in the area. They’re all really supportive and that’s been great. Favorite food? Pizza Restaurant? Well, of course it HAS to be Duane’s House of Pizza! Store? Scheels When you’re not on the court, what area events or activities do you attend or participate in? I go to the movies when I have some time, MSUM football games too. When I was little and because I grew up in the area I used to attend quite a few Bison games. For fun last summer I played on a coed softball team in Moorhead. How are your fans? They’re very good and we’ve had great attendance this year. We get a large group of students who get pretty crazy sometimes — they paint “MSUM” on their faces, dress up in crazy ways and sometimes they even sing. It’s hard to not notice them! Any locker room rituals? There are some players who have their rituals, but I’m not really into that. We play music — (laughing) our little system in the locker room gets pretty loud sometimes. How is your season going? We’ve been focusing a lot on our defense and getting our team into the same frame of mind. Seniors make up a majority of the team and we’ve come a long way over the past couple years. 43 FMSPOTLIGHT JANUARY2012

Position: Point Guard Height: 5’ 7’’ Year: Junior Major: Dietetics with a coaching minor. Hometown: Brainerd, MN What do you like about Fargo? I love the area because there’s a lot to do. The town I come from (Brainerd) isn’t as large. I also really like the school atmosphere at Concordia and the friendships I’ve built. Favorite food? Chicken Alfredo. Restaurant? Johnny Carino’s Store? Tj maxx. What events around town do you attend for fun? I’ve been to a few Bison basketball games. A couple high school basketball games here and there when my old high school team is playing in town. Other than that I’m usually pretty busy during the winter months. How are your fans? We get a good amount of fans. For women’s basketball games we get a lot of alumni and people who have ties to Concordia; a lot of the fans are faculty and their families. We get a decent amount of students who come too. Saturday games are usually pretty good. Our fans really impact our game play. It’s a great atmosphere. Pre-game ritual? We have all of our freshman or new girls on the team sing the Concordia school song before every game and as a team we say prayer before we warm up. How is the season going? Our team chemistry is great. We have a ton of new freshmen so we’re young. Our first few games of the season were big tests but we’re starting to figure out our team. Defense is what we’re really trying to establish to set ourselves apart from other teams. Our expectations are to win our conference and make a run for the national championship.

Position: Guard Height: 6’ 1’’ Year: Sophomore Major: Undecided Hometown: St. Paul, MN What do you like about Fargo? My family lives up here so they attend all of my games. Plus I get home-cooked meals, which is great. I attended Texas State for a year and found out it was too far from my family. It’s nice to be closer to them. Favorite Food? Home-cooked meals. Restaurant? Texas Roadhouse Store? Scheels What events do you attend for fun? I like to go to the Bison football games and when we aren’t playing a game, I also like to watch Bison women’s basketball. How are your fans? We have really loyal fans within the community. At every home game we have a really great crowd. My family always comes to watch the games, so that’s great too. Funny story? At games the refs always look at the tattoo on my arm and say something along the lines of, “Wow! that’s a lotta money on your arm!” At away games my tattoo always gets noticed. How is the season going? We have high expectations. Our team chemistry is great and at every game somebody steps up in a big way for us. We play great defense and that really sets us apart from the other teams.

THE DOME

SPORTS

FARGODOME was modeled after the Tacoma Dome in Washington with an air-structured dome; however, it ended up with a hard roof and is technically not a “dome” at all.

JANUARY2012 FMSPOTLIGHT 52

THE FARGODOME

was built with just under one million bricks.

NDSU FOOTBALL

This year is the first time the Bison reached the Division I Football Championship. The Fargodome played a prominent role in their success by hosting three playoff games. The events brought a lot of extra pride and profit to the Fargodome.

IN 2006 THE FARGODOME

sold 25,504 hotdogs, jumbodogs, Polish sausages and brats - enough to stretch from West Acres to the Flying J Plaza!

53 FMSPOTLIGHT JANUARY2012

ccording to general manager, Rob Sobolik, with as many different events that come through the Fargodome (roughly 105 per year) it can be quite a task to set up shows. As an example of the type of work that goes into switchovers, on January 13th Monty Python’s “SPAMALOT” is performing at the Fargodome and the following day Miranda

Lambert is coming to do a show. This sort of changeover requires a massive team to take down the set of “SPAMALOT” and switch it over for the Lambert concert. After “SPAMALOT” a team of roughly 40-50 people will work to clean and take down the set then overnight will begin set up for the concert. Once Lambert’s crew arrives in

THE CHARITY F argodome also caters to charities and hosts walks and events when possible. Fill the Dome is one of the largest charity events that occurs each year. Last year the event raised over 80 tons of food - close to 443,093 meals.

Another way for charities to raise money is to volunteer to work concession stands during concerts and football games. When non-profit organizations volunteer to work concession stands a fraction of

the morning they will set up the stage, lights and speakers. Finally, after less than 24 hours of work everything will be in place, the lights will go down and the crowd will begin to roar.

the sales go to that organization. Last year $98,000 was paid out to non-profit organizations with payouts ranging from $150 to $19,000 per charity.

Holy Cow! Oh sorry ... well forget that noise sister! Tell the ol’ fatted calf himself that the sauce is good for the gander as well as the goose! Give him a chance to recognize just how he’s treating you and see where it goes from there. Most times, we dudes run our mouths without THINKING, so for now, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Try and turn this around to a more positive outcome for you both equally ... health-wise AND relationship wise. Maybe dangle a carrot in front of the ol’ mule a’la sex! “LESS CORN...MORE PORN!” could be your battle cry! Okay, maybe not, just a suggestion ... if it turns out he’s destined to be that slob on the duct-tape-covered-chair wearing the stylish gravy-stained wife beater ... at least you’ll find out BEFORE it’s too late. Good luck!

Hey Guys,

[QUESTION]

My boyfriend and I had a great holiday. We spent time traveling together and did lots of eating and celebrating, like most people. Here is the problem. For the past few days he keeps saying that “WE” need to go to the gym and “WE” need to start eating healthy. I agreed, but the “WE” has turned into “ME”… He hasn’t changed his eating habits nor does he come with me to the gym. So, basically he thinks I’m getting fat and wanted me to go. How do I handle this situation?

Shake what yo mama gave ya! It was the holidays and let’s be honest, who doesn’t gain a few pounds? Bottom line … Work out if YOU want to and if it’s going to make YOU feel better. Leave him on the couch and do what makes YOU happy. Don’t try to lose a few pounds for him. If he is more concerned about the way you look rather than spending time with you and eating your faces off during celebrations … My advice: KICK HIM TO THE CURB! Find someone who loves YOU for every bite of cheeseburger and glass of wine you eat/drink! It’s a new year and you deserve to be happy lil mama!

BEER

BEER THAT MAKES CENTS

FINNEGANS IS TURNING BEER INTO FOOD.

N

ext time your wife sees you cracking open the six pack and questions how many you’ve had, you can tell her that you’re drinking the beers for charity. Finnegans beer opened in 2000 in the Twin Cities and 100 percent of the proceeds from its beer sales go to fight hunger in MN, SD, WI and ND. With a mission statement of “Turning beer into food” this is a charity that almost everyone can get behind. Finnegans works with the Emergency Foodshelf Network’s Harvest for the Hungry program and the beer even supports local charities. When you buy a six-pack of Finnegans at Happy Harry’s the money supports the food pantries in Fargo.

Last year 5,300 barrels of Finnegans were produced. This amounted to close to 200,000 gallons of beer.

This spring Finnegans will be unveiling a blond ale that will be similar to the Irish Amber but will have a lighter body.

The beer is made in the Summit brewery in St. Paul.
