Hey Guys, Tis the season for FAMILY DRAMA! My mother-in-law is coming to town for the holidays and she will be here a total of five day and six nights (but who is counting). She is already making demands about traditions and how we are going to be doing things. I don’t know how to handle this situation‌Please help!

Oh Lord help us ... it’s the ol’ battle axe. Whaddya want ... advice to keep your head low, or hand you a stick to draw a line in the sand? It’s your holiday too ya know, and (by the way, is your husband helping out with this?) you can start out by gently reminding her you have family traditions that are just as important to YOUR family. Remind her that the pleasant and peaceful merging of family traditions during the holiday season can be a beautiful thing! So, with that bit o’ pleasantry said and out of the way, if that doesn’t seem to take with the M-I-L...sweep the leg. Sometimes it takes a strong stand to convey the point that YOU are the alpha-female-upland-gorilla-and-no-I-am-not-calling-you-fat kind of person I know you can be. You can be strong, but fair. And as a side-note, if you get the chance, eat off her plate while staring her down if you feel it should come to that...she’ll RESPECT you for it! Ignore that last part, I started drinking...

First off, I hope that you stocked up on the Happy Harry’s Penny Wine Sale! Why? Because you will NEED it! Sometimes you just have to grin your way through the holidays. With that said, be sure to stand your ground on some traditions and try compromise as much as possible. But, unfortunately the holidays have become a time of stress and lots of family drama. They always say “too many cooks in the kitchen” … Well, that is what you get around the holidays. Enjoy your Christmas, remember what it is all about and drink LOTS of WINE! P.S. Start making plans to be “out of town” next Christmas to avoid the drama.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and the present is today. As we grow older our sense of the holiday season changes from “I just need the break from the grind” to “thank God for the gift of time.” We realize not what’s important to us, but rather who’s important to us. It’s a time to strengthen relationships and create memories with family and friends. Don’t read me wrong, the material gifts compliment the season, but seeing your kid’s face light up, watching both agreed to not exchange gifts) can be one of the greatest highs in the world. the gift of health. That’s why this month FM Stride put together the local Fitness Gift Guide. Whether it’s a pre-paid registration for the Fargo Marathon or a CSA share from our local organic gardens, the ultimate Fitness Gift Guide will point you in the right direction when selecting gifts this holiday

Grocery List Try These This Month!
Cranberries vs. Red Grapes
W
ith thousands of selections in a grocery store, it’s not always easy to tell what’s healthy and what’s not. Here are a few suggestions to keep your diet on the right track.
The polyphenol (antioxidant) concentration is greater in cranberries than red grapes. Cranberries peak in freshness and contain their highest levels of beneficial nutrients between October and December. High in vitamin C and fiber, cranberries provide anti-inflammatory benefits, increase the support of a healthy immune system and help prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Add fresh or dry cranberries to a spinach salad or bowl of cereal.
Kale vs. Potato Chips Honey vs. White Sugar
Research suggests that honey may help promote better blood sugar control. Daily consumption of honey also raises blood levels of disease-fighting protective antioxidant compounds. For a sweet and healthy kick mix honey into plain yogurt or drizzle it atop your morning toast. 29

Loaded with antioxidants such as carotenoids and flavonoids, studies show kale has the ability to reduce the risk of breast, colon and bladder cancers. Baked kale chips are simple to make: toss olive oil over fresh kale, mix and bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven until the leaves are crisp but still green.
Dark Chocolate vs. Milk/White Chocolate: With a more pronounced chocolate taste and free of milk solids, dark chocolate is loaded with cellprotecting antioxidants that are shown to reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow and stimulate feel-good endorphins. Bittersweet chocolate cacao contents range from 75% to 100%. For more nutrients select bars higher in cacao content --- the higher the percentage the less sugar in the bar.
Chocolate Milk vs. Sports Drinks Chocolate milk has been discovered to work as well as Gatorade during the post-workout recovery period. Packed with carbohydrates, protein, calcium and vitamins A and D chocolate milk helps strengthen bones and restores depleted muscles.
