LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER his month marks a very special month in our business. Our company made a very big expansion move that will allow us to become a larger and more diverse publishing company. Now, not only will we produce FM Spotlight and FM Stride, we recently acquired Bison Illustrated and Outdoor Design and Living Guide. These four publica-

T

tions allow us to staff more team members, learn at a faster pace and provide new resources. Together we will print 522,000 copies in a year and reach about two million readers. I am excited to have this opportunity and challenge. My goal is to use this situation to learn more about the area we live in and how I can help make a positive impact on the community. Now about this month! July is probably

the most fun time of the year in this neck of the woods. Not only does Fargo-Moorhead have an amazing number of opportunities, we also have the lake area fun to add to the excitement. The preparation of the July issue was very fun this month with all of our exclusive interviews and photoshoots. I especially enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the FM RedHawks. That is a great organization

and a blast of a time. We also packed this issue with musician interviews with four national musicians and one of my favorite musicians from this area, Russ Peterson. I hope you enjoy our event calendar, live music schedule and Hotlist as well. We feel that information is a necessity to the happiness of this community.

Justin Moore Spotlight: Have you ever been to Fargo? Moore: You know what, I honestly don’t know. We go to so many places. We’ve been up in that direction but I’m not sure if I’ve actually been to Fargo. We’re looking forward to coming up there, that way we know we’ve been there. (Laughs) Spotlight: What’s your favorite fair food? Moore: Corn dogs without a doubt. I’m obsessed. Those things are dangerous. Everytime we have those for food after a show I plow through about three or four of them. Spotlight: You’ll be playing outdoors at the Red River Valley Fair. Do you have a preference of playing indoors or outdoors? Moore: I don’t necessarily have a preference. I enjoy both. Although in the summertime, there’s nothing like playing outside in the beautiful weather. We enjoy both. Spotlight: What’s your favorite concert story? Moore: I’ve got thousands of stories. The one that is kind of funny and weird is when we played in Lincoln, NE with Miranda

Lambert. I walked right off the front of the stage. I was playing guitar and I wasn’t paying attention… I fell about 10-feet. Thank God I didn’t get hurt that bad. Spotlight: Your career is still pretty young. What do you have planned and hope for the future? Moore: We have the same aspirations as every other artist. We’ve been fortunate to be on a lot of major tours as the support act. That’s the ultimate goal, to be able to headline arenas like just a few other people are doing. We’ve been really, really fortunate. We have two albums that are close to being gold, five or six hits on the radio. We just have to keep doing it and adding to our fan base. Spotlight: What song is going to get the crowd going the most? Moore: Off the new album it would definitely be “Bait A Hook.” “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” is also a huge one, but obviously “Bait A Hook” has been a huge concert song. Off the last album “Small Town USA”, “Backwoods” and “I Could Kick Your Ass” are all good ones.

Spotlight: Have you ever been up to Fargo or played here? Mike Eli: No, we’ve been in the area, but we’ve never played there. It will be nice to get up to the Dakotas again. Spotlight: So what’s your favorite fair food? Mike Eli: I’m a sucker for the funnel cake, but the problem with the funnel cake is that I heard it’s not all that good for you. It’s hard to steer away from, that’s for sure! Not too long ago we were playing the state fair in Texas, and they had fried beer. It seems intriguing, you wanna like it, you really do, you wanna taste this fried beer, and say, ‘man what a great idea’…horrible idea! One of the worst things I’ve ever had (laughs).

Spotlight: So how are you guys handling your recent success? Mike Eli: We’re feeling pretty good these days. We’ve always felt really lucky. These days with our success it’s been really nice to feel like we’re getting to that next level...the last year and a half have been pretty big steps. Having a number one record really changes everything. Spotlight: What’s your favorite song to

perform? Mike Eli: Well I think right now “Even if it Breaks Your Heart,” is a huge highlight of the show. Getting up on stage and starting that song and then feeling the energy in the crowd, when we start singing that first note, it is incredibly satisfying. I would have to say that song right now is my favorite song to play. Spotlight: So what do you guys have planned in the near future? Mike Eli: Well we just started the Rascall Flatts tour. We’re doing that for the next four months with some of our own shows kind of sprinkled in, and then we’re gonna start a new record come January. We’ll keep releasing singles off of our current record, but you’ve gotta kind of think ahead. We start recording that next record in January. Hopefully the middle of next year sometime that record will come out. Spotlight: What’s your favorite concert story? Mike Eli: There’s been so many. You know, playing the Grand Ole Opry was a huge moment. I remember being a kid and watching the Grand Ole Opry with my grandparents and thinking to myself ‘man I really want to play that stage someday.’ Many years later we got to play it, and we’ve played it a few times.

THE HORSE PAR Great galloping jockeys! This July the North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo is finally opening after two years of slumber. On July 14 – 15 and July 21 – 22 the horse park will host eight to nine races each day. The first races begin at 1 p.m. and the gates open at 11 a.m. This is a family, friendly event. There will be theme days and events for the kids. Don’t forget about the fun for the adults, there will be 15 live teller stations and two self betting kiosks. The Horse Park has been closed for the last two years because of financial problems but now that

the track is open it will play host to jockeys and horses from Montana, Wyoming, Manitoba, South Dakota and other places from across the Midwest. Some of the purses for the jockeys may be as large as $10,000 so they have plenty of motivation to race. According to the President of the North Dakota Horse Park Board of Executives, Mike Cichy, they used to average around 1,100 people a year and with tickets only $3 and free admittance for children 12 and under, he hopes they can beat those numbers in the two weekends this year.

WHAT IS THIS PLACE? Sickies Garage is Fargo’s newest hotspot. This burger and beer joint opened last month, and is still attracting large crowds. It offers a great location next to the Hub. You can dance the night away in the Venue and then head over for a burger and beer. Looking for somewhere to go with the kids? Sickies is family friendly until 9 p.m. Not only does Sickies offer some great burgers and beer, but they also have lip-smacking cheese curds, fries and shakes. Oh, don’t forget about the full bar as well. Swing by and check out Fargo’s newest must-go-to spot.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT? Sickies has over 50 tap beers, the most in the area. However, what truly makes this place different is the taps on each of the booths. Each booth has four taps where you can pour your own beer. You no longer have to wait 10 minutes for a refill. Pour at your leisure. Next to the taps is an electronic display that will record how many ounces you drink. It’s as cool as it sounds.

[HE SAID]

DAVID

Heya Lexi! Well, first off, thanks for writing in! And secondly...your pals are whores. I’m thinking it sounds like you’re almost ready to grow up, but...just maybe needed someone to tell you it’s okay to be an adult, have adult fun, but stay within the well-marked confines of a monogamous relationship...like the big girls all do! Plus this way, when the summer skanks are busy itching and scratching from whatever they picked up over the weekend, you can laugh heartily and remark how nice it is your name stays out of filthy truck stop bathroom walls. Don’t make the mistake of losing a great guy so you and your pals can get your freaks on...literally in some situations. Follow your heart pumpkin...your ass will follow. Dave Jacobs

[QUESTION]

I know you can help me! All of my girlfriends are single this summer. I just started dating this guy and things are going great, but now that all of my girlfriends are single, I feel like the odd chick out. When we go out they always make reference of me having a boyfriend and sometimes they don’t even invite me because they think I will invite my man. Should I just break-up with him so my girls and I can have a fun single girl summer? -Lexi, Fargo

[SHE SAID]

Lexi, Oh honey! Here is the deal…If you really like this guy then you should stay with him. If he is “just a guy” and you know it’s not going anywhere, then call it off and enjoy a single girl’s summer (which sounds like a lot of crazy fun..LOVE IT!). At the same time, don’t let your friends run your life. You can still be young and fun and have a man, as long as you’re not THAT GIRL that is bringing him everywhere. Make time for just him and then pencil in time for the girls. It can be challenging, but you can do it. As for your girls calling you out at the bar because you have a man! Take it as a compliment you’re clearly HOT and they know all the guys want you! Have a Fabulous Summer, Amanda

INTERROGATION WITH

RUSS PETERSON Peterson has made a name for himself as being among the top saxophone players in the world. He has performed in Europe and across the U.S., and today works as assistant professor of saxophone and bassoon at Concordia College. When not in the classroom he can be found writing music for any number of different groups or playing saxophone for Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome or the bassoon for the FM Symphony. Peterson found time to sit down with FM Spotlight and talk about music in Fargo, what he’s been up to and what’s next for this musician on the move.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Spotlight: Did you always know that you wanted to make music your life? Peterson: Definitely. I always knew when I was a kid. It was all I was ever into.

Peterson: That’s my day job. If I didn’t have all those students I would have a lot more gigs. (Laughing) Seriously though, I love teaching and I love working at Concordia. They’re happy to have their faculty out doing what they do. They’re happy to see us out performing around town, regionally or even internationally. Concordia sponsored a trip to Scotland and Italy for my saxophone, flute and piano trio called the Excelsior! Trio. We’ll be playing at St. Andrews, Scotland at the World Saxophone Convention, and from there we’re flying down to Italy and we’ll be the featured group at the Faenza Saxophone Festival.

3. Spotlight: What do

5.

1.

Spotlight: What started your interest in music? Peterson: I’m not sure. I was always into music and I loved ’70s and ’80s rock bands. I played a lot of guitar back then so going into music was between saxophone and guitar. For me, I thought that being a professional guitar player would be irresponsible so I chose the saxophone.

2.

you think of the music scene in Fargo? Peterson: I have been more and more impressed with how the music scene has been growing. I’m impressed with the level of good musicians in this town and the amount of good work that’s available and the opportunities that you can make happen.

4.

Spotlight: How does teaching fit into your life?

Spotlight: Can you rank teaching, writing and performing in your life? Peterson: I love doing all three. I’m totally ADD so the great thing is that I get to spend a week or two writing a piece, then I teach and then one night I get to perform with Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome, and the next night I’m playing the bassoon with the FM Symphony. When I eat I like to eat a potato chip, chocolate then pasta. I like one little bite of everything at one time. It’s so cool that I can do that in Fargo-Moorhead.

6.

InterVIEW

Spotlight: Since you’ve played with so many bands at so many venues, is there one that stands out that still makes you say, ‘Wow, that was cool!’? Peterson: I’m lucky. I’ve gotten to do performances in European concert halls. Back in 1995 I won an international saxophone competition in Geneva, Switzerland. I got to perform with a Swiss orchestra in this beautiful hall, and a week later I got to run up to L’Orchestra de la Suisse Romande and Collegium Musicum, Basel and I got to play with their orchestra in a huge concert hall with 3,000 seats. If you’re playing with a good band you can be playing in somebody’s basement and it would rock.

7.

Spotlight: What do you have planned in your future? Peterson: We have this Europe trip in July for two weeks. I also teach at the International Music

Camp up in Dunseith, N.D. I do a lot of classical writing. I’ve finished up two pieces this year. I’m writing a piece for the FM Chamber Chorale, they’ve commissioned me to write a piece for choir, piano and saxophone. I’m also writing a trombone concerto for Assistant Professor Nathaniel Dickey for trombone and band. And THEN I’m writing ten new pieces for FM Symphony and Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome for the show “Symphony Rocks.”

OF A How does a guy get your attention? Make me laugh!! Any guy with a personality and a sense of humor definitely gets my attention. What do you like doing on a first date? I’ve honestly been on 2 dates in my whole life! But I would say pick something fun! Save the fancy dinners for later. If asked to compare your sex life to a sport, what would it be? Football for sure. Big muscular guys trying to make a pass at you. Hopefully they know how to play the field! You have been brunette and blonde, who really has more fun? I’m going to have to say blondes. I felt like an unstoppable force.

1. How long have you

been a chef at Maxwells? Wald: I’ve been here at this location for about nine years. Before it was Maxwells it was Littlefield’s. When the ownership changed they kept most of the staff.

2. How long

have you been in the cooking industry? Wald: I started in 1997. I’m originally from Bismarck and that’s where all of my training and interest in the culinary field and the restaurant industry started. I graduated from Bismarck State College in the hotel and restaurant management field and continued to NDSU where I got my bachelors in hospitality and tourism management.

3.

Did you always want to be a chef?

CHEF corneRr

Wald: I grew up with an interest in helping my mom in the kitchen. When I was 15 I worked under an Italian chef in Bismarck. The guy was serious about his job, but at the same time he helped train and focus my abilities that helped me to be what I am today. He was an inspiration for me.

4. Favorite

dish to cook? Wald: One of my favorite things to make is soups. It’s fun to go through the coolers, and to start digging through ingredients to create something unique. It all starts with making a great stock then matching flavors and textures.

5. Best part of the job?

Wald: No day is ever the same. What I love about my job is that you have to make quick and accurate decisions throughout the day. It’s a rush and a sense of accomplishment. A sound decision will benefit the restaurant, the customers and my crew.
