LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER ay this be an amazing month for fun and entertainment in FargoMoohead! Judging by the content we put together for this issue, I think we have a pretty darn good chance to fulfill that request! Something really cool happened last month. We published our office phone number for the first time. I thought we might receive a few calls throughout the month of

April. Wow, was I wrong! The phone has been ringing off the hook everyday. This makes me more happy than anything! It means people are really engaging with the magazine and want to become involved. We have had calls from visitors wanting magazines shipped to them, calls about story ideas, calls about job interests and so much more. Let’s keep this going because this is what we want! We want the community to be involved and find

It doesn’t matter if you’re the biggest NASCAR fan out there or if you’ve never seen a race, you’ve probably heard of Tony Stewart. e has won almost every award out there for racers, he’s a philanthropist who has helped hundreds of people and, best yet, he comes to Fargo every summer to race. Mark your calendars for June 20 because that’s the day Tony Stewart will be coming to the Red River Valley Speedway. FM Spotlight caught up with Stewart to talk about what he thinks of the area, racing with the Schatz family and more.

Spotlight: What do you think of the Red River Valley Speedway?
Stewart: The surface is nice and smooth. It’s really first-class. The Schatz family has done a lot of things at the track to make it better for both the fans and the racers. It’s a great racetrack, and if me being there gets NASCAR fans to come out and see what a class facility it is, I think most of them will remember that. In the times I’ve been there, the racing has been really good, and as someone who also operates a dirt track (Eldora Speedway), I know how important putting on a good show is.

Spotlight: What’Is it like racing in Fargo?
We’re actually the underdogs because the guys who we’re racing with are guys who race there every week.
Stewart: It’s been cool to come to Fargo and get a chance to run the last couple of years. I’m looking forward to coming back this June.
That’s the fun thing about dirt racing; The other guys that run there every week, they know what to look for. They know what the track is going to do … it doesn’t mean that we won’t figure out what’s happening, but that’s part of the challenge. That’s what makes it fun. It’s something different than what I do 36 weekends a year.
Coming there to race makes you take a lot of pride if you have a good night because you are racing with guys who do this every week. You take a lot of pride in that because you realize you are going up against racers who are at the top of their game. What’s hard for people to understand is everybody thinks we’re the favorites when we come to a place like this, but we’re not.
The fans have been great to me there. Everyone that has come out and supported the event has made it a lot fun for me to be in town. I’m looking forward to seeing even more fans this year.
Spotlight: What’has your experience been like working with the Schatz family?
Stewart: When Donny and Danny told me they were going to be a part of the speedway in 2010 I told them, “just let me know what I can do to help.” It’s been a lot of fun to work with them. Obviously, we have a relationship with Donny because of him driving for my World of Outlaws team. Donny is a buddy of mine. He’s my driver, but at the same time he’s a good friend. That’s what friends do for each other. I know the Schatz family really has a lot of passion for racing, and they have shown that through their commitment to keeping racing alive in the area. Spotlight: How’Is racing with Donny Schatz?
Stewart: Donny’s one of the best in the business. He’s a guy that has tremendous car control and is super smart on the track. He knows how to get his car to work best. He’s always going to race you clean. We were teammates in Australia, and he really helped get me get going in a Winged Sprint car. We’ve tested together. He’s such an asset to have in this sport. We’re thrilled as an organization to have him, and I’m thrilled to call him a friend. His parents should be really proud of him. His leadership both at Tony Stewart Racing and with what’s going on at Red River Valley Speedway obviously is a big part of why success finds him.

Spotlight: Talk about your experience with the Tony Stewart Foundation and why you think philanthropy is important.
Stewart: Racing is my profession, but I’m also driven to help others through the work of my foundation. There are so many organizations providing outstanding services and programs, and my impulse is to help them all. However, it has been necessary to focus our funding to those programs that most closely match my passions – children, animals and fellow drivers in neWWed of assistance. I’ve been fortunate enough to accomplish my dream of driving race cars for a living. The Tony Stewart Foundation will continue to provide the vehicle for me to give back to others needing a helping hand – a child enduring a serious or life-threatening illness, an abused or homeless animal, an injured race driver and his family.

Originally, Village Green opened in 1981 as a 9-hole course. Then, in 1994, 9 additional holes were added to create a full-length and respectable 18hole course. You’ll find a nice variety of challenges at Rose Creek. Whether it’s the opening hole that allows for an easy birdie or the 12th hole par 5 that’s surrounded by water on both sides of the fairway, there’s a hole to test everyone’s game. Edgewood is packed with 18 holes of ups and downs and trees and bunkers. Their signature 8th hole offers a great challenge. Rich Sommer Rich Sommer is best known for his role as Harry Crane in AMC’s hit series “MAD MEN.” He played Anne Hathaway’s friend, Doug, in the film “The Devil Wears Prada” and has guest starred on shows such as “Law & Order,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “The Office.” Sommer graduated from Concordia College in 2000 and has ties to the FM area. In March, he was in town for the Fargo Film Festival and FM Spotlight was able to catch up with the actor.

Rich Sommer INTERVIEW FMSPOTLIGHT: What comes to mind
FMSPOTLIGHT: You graduated from
SOMMER: I spent more of my time in Moorhead but I definitely made my way into Fargo when I needed more than a Perkins or Dairy Queen. I think of the Red River Zoo, the Fargo Theatre – I spent a lot of time at both of those places. The area is much different than when I lived here. It’s so much more vibrant and art centered, which is exciting.
SOMMER: I moved down to the Twin Cities and worked for six months as an intern on a morning show at a radio station. When that was done I moved to a photo processing lab and sort of got backed into a corner wondering what I was going to do with my life. My advisor at Concordia mentored me for my master’s endeavor and I was able to get in to the MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Acting in Cleveland. I studied there for three years then went to New York for three years and now I live in L.A.
when you think of Fargo?
FMSPOTLIGHT: What was your
favorite hangout spot in FM?
SOMMER: Mick’s Office. I didn’t drink till four months after my 21st birthday so I was a bit of a goody-goody in those regards. I sort of cut my teeth at Mick’s. I also hung out at DQ and Premiere Video. One of my best friends from college worked at Premiere so I used to swing by DQ, get a box of StarKiss then go sit at Premiere for three or four hours and chat and help shelve videos. I was really sad to drive past the DQ and see that the Premiere is now a parking lot. But I was happy to see Pizza Patrol is still kicking.
Concordia in 2000. What was next?
FMSPOTLIGHT: What’d you do out in
New York?
SOMMER: Our grad school gave us a showcase there. I got a manager out of the showcase and got hooked up with a commercial agent. I kind of hit the ground running and did my first national commercial about a month after the showcase. The commercial was for Bud Light. I walked into a window and fell down.
FMSPOTLIGHT: Describe your big break
as an actor?
SOMMER: When my wife and I lived in New York we were flat broke and hated our lives. Twice we almost bagged it. During the summer of 2005 I came back to Fargo to teach at Trollwood. While I was there my managers called and said “there’s this movie (“The Devil Wears Prada”) … you’re never gonna get it … but
it’s a good casting director and you should put yourself on tape for it.” I still have the notebook where I scribbled down “Meryl Streep, friend, Doug.” So I recorded an audition and sent it in then flew out to New York for a callback in July. FMSPOTLIGHT: Did you always
know you wanted to act?
SOMMER: I knew I wanted to act but I was also 100 percent positive I’d never make a living out of it. FMSPOTLIGHT:
SOMMER: (Laughs) It’s still a little surprising. FMSPOTLIGHT: Any-
thing new coming up?

SOMMER: I’m in two films premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival. One is called “Fairhaven” that we shot last winter in Massachusetts, and the other is called “The Giant Mechanical Man.” Jenna Fisher, who is Pam on “The Office,” her husband wrote and directed the film and Jenna stars in it and I play her brother in law. So those two films are premiering soon. This summer I’m going to be in “Harvey” on Broadway – which will be my first play since grad school – in New York City. Yeah, so my wife and two kids and I will rent out a place in New York for the summer. It’s very exciting.

SPOTLIGHT: How did you decide to become a chef? Well, I had a single mom, and so I cooked a lot at home. I started cooking for my mother and my brother when I was like 13. … I started out with really cheesy binder-style cookbooks for home cooks and just started making really simple recipes at home, and that’s kind of what sparked the original passion for it. SPOTLIGHT: You work with your wife, what’s the best part of working with her? The fact that we can be critical with one another and not get overly offended because we can’t be offended. … We’re kind of forced to get along and take each other’s criticism and grow and get better because of it. SPOTLIGHT: What would you recommend to a first timer at Mezzaluna? If you come in for happy hour (all week 4 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to
Q &A midnight), our happy hour food is the same as everything we serve all night. We just discount the heck out of it. … I always encourage people to come for the first time to experience happy hour because it’s a good entry level. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, and then you can check out the menus and look at the dinning room. SPOTLIGHT: Do you have any crazy cooking stories or kitchen mishaps? A chef I used to work for, I used to help him do cooking classes. It was in Colorado, so the elevation would really get to people when they would come into town. Then they’d go to
cooking class, and once in a while, someone would pass out from the altitude. This lady passed out in cooking class one day. … I had a pitcher of water and a pitcher of vinegar pretty close to each other. They called to me to get a glass of water. I poured her a big glass of white wine vinegar. So yeah, she woke up. SPOTLIGHT: What’s the best part about being a chef? It’s really a ton of hard work and a lot of hours. But I think easily the best part about it is when you can make people happy with food, and they acknowledge … that you really kind of made their day.

Favorite part of bartending? Making connections with people and making friends. Least favorite? The responsibility when you have to tell someone they’ve had enough but they want to keep on partying. You obviously have to be responsible because you want everyone to get home. Joke? Ole and Lena are out at a picnic and Ole pulls out a cigarette for himself and offers one to Lena. Lena says, “Ole! I can’t smoke. What would my Sunday school kids say?”
Later on Ole pulls out a flask and takes a swig and offers some to Lena. She says, “Ole! I can’t drink. What would my Sunday school kids say?” Finally, they’re driving home and they pass a hotel. Ole asks if she wants to get a room and see where the night goes and Lena actually agrees. Ole is shocked and says, “What are you going to tell your Sunday school kids?” She responds, “I’m going to tell them what I tell them every week. You can have a good time without smoking or drinking.” How to IMPRESS a date? Make sure your car is clean and waxed. Open the door. Call the restaurant ahead of time and make sure there’s something nice on the table. Start at the bar with a nice glass of champagne or a cocktail. Finally, don’t over-indulge.
