As the owner of Spotlight, a company proudly rooted in Fargo for over a decade, I’ve had the incredible privilege of witnessing and contributing to the growth of our local business ecosystem. In a city known for its grit, community spirit, and Midwest resilience, B2B companies are the heroes who work behind the scenes to support everything from startups to established companies. Their services and expertise are foundational to our economy and fuel the growth of every sector.
Spotlight was born from a vision to show off the very best of our community. Producing magazines that showcase local achievements and insights has allowed me to connect with remarkable business leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs who each bring something invaluable to the table. These are the people who inspire, drive, and uplift the Fargo business landscape. And honestly, I've used many of them to help build our business as well.
The purpose of this magazine issue is to highlight those companies and services that might not always be front and center but are nonetheless essential. They make it possible for businesses like mine—and yours—to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

ABOUT DAKOTA CARRIER NETWORK
Dakota Carrier Network
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS GROWTH LEADER
Founded in 1996 by North Dakota’s independent broadband service providers, Dakota Carrier Network (DCN) operates the state’s most robust fiber optic network, spanning more than 70,000 miles. Over the past 25 years, DCN has been leading internet technology, offering a reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructure that supports businesses, government entities, and healthcare providers across the state.
DCN’s state-of-the-art tier III data centers, located in Fargo and Bismarck, offer co-location and cloud computing services with the utmost security. They are, without a doubt, a trusted partner for critical infrastructure sectors such as state government, wireless carriers, hospitals, and financial institutions.
DCN’S RELIABILITY GOES THE EXTRA MILE
DCN values reliability and scalability, prioritizing customers' access to the services they need, wherever they are—24/7. With a guaranteed 99.999% uptime, DCN ensures that businesses remain connected and operational, backed by a team of local technicians who are always available when needed. DCN’s network is also built for flexibility, allowing businesses to expand without delay, whether they’re opening a new office in North Dakota or across the country.
What is Uptime?
Uptime refers to the percentage of time a system or service is running without interruptions. For example, a 99.999% uptime guarantee means less than 5 minutes of downtime per year.
Four Tips for Choosing a Technology Partner
Reliability Matters
Ensure your technology partner guarantees uptime. DCN offers 99.999% uptime—if they don’t meet that, they compensate you.
Complement, Don’t Replace, Your IT Team
A good partner will enhance your IT team’s strengths, providing expertise and support when needed.
INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP
Plan for Growth
Your technology provider should be flexible and scalable, ready to support your growth at a moment’s notice.
Understand Pricing
Cost shouldn't be your only criteria. Consider the cost of downtime and weigh reliability over the initial price.
Over the past decade, DCN and its owner companies have invested more than $1.5 billion in their fiber optic infrastructure, positioning North Dakota as a national leader in connectivity. DCN’s carrier-neutral data centers provide customers with the redundancy, diversity, and flexibility they need for their growing business needs. From education and healthcare to government and business sectors, DCN’s commitment to reliability, responsiveness, and relationships makes it a trusted technology partner across industries.

Livewire?
Experienced and Dedicated Team

edge audio, video, lighting, and staging capabilities to ensure a world-class, one-of-a-kind event experience for every event they produce. Livewire's
Tips for Choosing a Live Event Production Company
Seek Expertise and Trust the Professionals
"Just as you rely on doctors for healthcare and lawyers for legal matters, entrust your events to experienced professionals. Look for a company with a proven track record, a dedicated team, and a deep understanding of event production's variables and intricacies. We've honed our skills over years of experience, navigating the complexities of event planning and execution so you don't have to. Let us bring that expertise to the table—it'll make your life easier, and elevate your event at the same time!"
Choose a Partner Who Can Grow with You
"We know that not every event needs a stadium-level amount of production support. Many of our longstanding clients hosting large events today started with a simple, small audio system rental many years ago."
"Your event needs may evolve over time, and that's okay! Select an event production partner who can scale their services to match your growth. Whether you're hosting a small meeting or a large-scale conference, your chosen company should have the resources and flexibility to adapt and deliver consistent quality regardless of the event's size.
Livewire prides itself on maintaining exactly that versatility and looks forward to serving your event, large or small, in Fargo-Moorhead or anywhere in the United States."
Offload the Logistics and Focus on Your Core Strengths
"Event planning involves countless details, from venue selection and contract negotiation to technical setup and talent advance and management. A reliable, trustworthy event production company will serve as an event planner, handling these logistical burdens and allowing you to concentrate on what matters most: your audience's experience, and the core business objectives of your event."
Prioritize the Audience Experience
"Ultimately, the success of any event hinges on the experience of your attendees. Choose an event production partner who shares your commitment to creating memorable, unique, engaging experiences. Look for a company that prioritizes audience satisfaction through meticulous planning, creative solutions, venue transformation, and flawless execution."

25+ PIECES OF BUSINESS ADVICE TO INSPIRE AND GUIDE YOU
hen it comes to making yourself or your business better, having the right advice can make all the difference. Whether you're launching a startup, scaling an established company, or simply navigating day-to-day operations, the insights of those who’ve walked the path before you are invaluable. In this article, we’ve gathered some of the most impactful advice from industry experts, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders that we've interviewed over the years.
Jamie Maguire
SENIOR SECURITY ENGINEER, HIGH POINT NETWORKS
"The best way to prevent email compromise is multifactor authentication. We recommend people install an authenticator app on their phone so they get a push notification when they try to log in. That can cut down the risk of email compromise a lot."
Erin Grahn MA, LPCC, LMAC, WILLOW TREE COUNSELING
"Ways to prevent burnout are often the things that we don’t feel we have time for. It is recommended that you ensure you are getting enough sleep, eating regularly, and choosing options that fuel your body, limiting caffeine intake, and exercising. However, there are additional ways to prevent and combat burnout. Evaluating what needs to be done, determining what can wait, and saying 'No' to tasks or invitations help manage our stressors. Sometimes we need to also take a look at the types of thoughts we are experiencing and identify ways to shift our language to reduce negative appraisal of tasks. For example, having a thought such as, 'I am never going to get this done in time,' can leave a person feeling defeated and decrease productivity. Replacing that thought with a new thought that decreases feelings of defeat or helplessness can shift our emotions and desire to engage in tasks."
Dave Harmon FOUNDER, HARMON ENTERTAINMENT
"Make sure you have systems in place to move forward when you lose a key employee. Business would be easy if everyone followed the process and never left the company, but we all know that is not realistic. Cross-training each management role can really save a lot of headaches when something unforeseen happens. Also, make sure you have a solid training and policy and procedure manual for everything that happens in your company."
Jessie
Azure FOUNDER, SPADESSO
"The best piece of advice I've ever come across recommends sharing your goals with someone else, as it helps keep you accountable. We've shared our goals with several mentors, coaches, and our community of loyal consumers and providers. We know they'll be expecting to see some of these changes in the new year. And on that note, I know we'll need to improve our channels of communication to keep them up to speed on our latest developments."
Sarah Sannes PUBLIC RELATIONS & EVENTS, SCHEELS
"Everyone has a story; everyone is going through something. It is easy to be critical without acknowledging the 'why' in people's lives; however, it is imperative to remember everyone's story is different. If we keep the 'why' in mind, it allows for stronger conversations, deeper motivation, and sometimes a little grace."
Jason Orloske FOUNDER AND MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT, BRIDGE THE GAP CONSULTING, LLC
"'Sometimes you just have to scare them a little.' This was told to me in 2011 by a director who said if someone couldn't deliver, I should tell them their job was on the line. This transactional thinking may work in the short term, but it's not an ongoing strategy to retain talent."
Maddie Craig FOUNDER, BLUE CYPHER BOOKKEEPING
"Seek out a mentor or advisor early on! Find people to learn from that will not only cheer you on but challenge you as well. I feel so fortunate to have been able to get to know some amazing businesswomen who have made and continue to make a difference in my life. There are many ways just this year alone that I've seen how their advice and challenges have helped me grow and make more progress than I could have thought I'd be able to make and come out stronger for it."
Abby Styf DIRECTOR OF MEMBER
DEVELOPMENT, FARGO
MOORHEAD
WEST FARGO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
"At one point in my life, I was one of those people who were just trying to get to the weekend. What I learned is that life's shorter than you think. Start enjoying the Tuesdays and stop wishing for it to finally be Friday."
Heidi Haugo COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, NORTH DAKOTA CORN UTILIZATION COUNCIL
"Be present. Psychology experts have said that a huge part of depression revolves around living in the past. Anxiety, on the other hand, is caused by spending time worrying heavily about the future. Practicing living in the present helps us to be better listeners, teammates, and partners, and improves self-awareness and mental health. Yes, please!"
Ben Zietz EMPLOYEE BENEFITS ADVISOR, MMA
"Be curious. Be genuine. Be present. If you focus on these traits, you can really go far!"
Kristi Spindler HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR, DAKOTA SUPPLY GROUP
"I’m a believer in a people-first culture. When you rely on and invest in your people, it creates a high-performing organization with remarkable customer experiences."
Ruchi Joshi Bhardwaj SR. PROGRAM MANAGER, GRAND FARM
"The answer to most of the questions is 'it depends.' Decision-making can be difficult at times, so try to incorporate a blend of both telescopic and microscopic perspectives."
Steven Reuter SPEAKER AND CONSULTANT
"There is a lot of advice already out there, and a lot more that could be said. So I’ll just say this: You know far less than you think. The assumptions you make and the beliefs you hold are, by nature, imperfect at best."
"Curiosity is the best antidote to the pain you create by holding so fast to your opinion and beliefs. Embrace your fallibility. Instead of making a judgment, ask a question. Then, let your opinion change with the facts. If we can be more curious in our lives, we create opportunities for trust, healthy conflict, connection, and safety. But we need to set our egos aside. That takes inner work."
Heidi Reisenauer VP OF VIDEO AND CONTENT, FLINT GROUP
"Ask yourself why you want to achieve your goals and how they align with who you are."
Natalie Gruchow STRATEGIC PROGRAM'S SPECIALIST, FEAR FREE, LLC
"When I was going through some major life changes, an anonymous coworker left a fortune cookie message on my keyboard that said, 'Action is worry’s worst enemy.' I still have it to this day. It’s a reminder that worrying about a problem doesn’t get you closer to a solution—action does. Take risks, be the change, and stay true to your core values. Let them guide your decisions."
Trina A. Michels BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, EIDE BAILLY LLP
"Thoughtfully integrating technology into your processes can create a more satisfying work environment, empowering employees to focus on meaningful tasks and fostering engagement. By using technology to streamline administrative tasks and nurture workplace culture, you contribute to improved employee retention."
Admiral Stuart Munsch FOUNDER AND MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT, BRIDGE
THE
GAP CONSULTING, LLC
"For those working in more senior positions, the real key is establishing a vision for your team or your organization. It’s important to know what you are trying to achieve, what the objectives are, why the organization exists, and why they should feel proud to be a part of the team."
Terry Sando MANAGING PARTNER, GOOSE RIVER BREWING
"Do a great job with your business planning; the more detailed it is, the better prepared you will be. Have a contingency fund of at least 35 percent because projected costs will almost never be accurate. This is especially true in today’s environment where inflation impacts profit margins. Entrepreneurs today should leverage the North Dakota business development ecosystem as much as possible when starting a business. Technological change is accelerating, so it's essential to adopt a lifelong learning mindset to keep up with these changes. Finally, remember that your family will be the ones there for you in the long run, so develop a good work-life balance."
Mark Rheault
STRATEGIC ADVISOR, CENTRAK
"Bootstrap as far as you can go. I learned the hard way that bringing on big-name investors and people who seem to be good partners isn’t always what you envisioned. With Intelligent InSites, I felt like I had too many people to please (the board, investors, partners) which took focus away from the ones that really matter—the team members and our customers. Accepting other people’s money and bringing on partners are both potentially slippery slopes—not always, but often they are. From my experience in building businesses both ways, the bootstrapping approach was a bit more challenging at first but was incredibly beneficial down the road. It also forces you to make sure that you have a solid product-market fit before you put the marketing pedal to the metal, which is when the big expenses really start to accrue quickly."
Brianne Hoffman MARKET SECTOR, REGIONS & STRATEGIC ADVISORY COMMUNICATIONS DIRECT; BLACK & VEATCH
"Don't be competitive, just do your job well. I am very competitive by nature, but I have found that in my career, it can get in my way. When you work to outshine someone else, it often means putting someone else down in an effort to rise above. When you think about it like that, that's not really someone you want to be. Everyone is working towards a common goal and that is what equals success. Spread positivity and provide support in the workplace by working together rather than working to be better than someone else."
David Scott CEO AND FOUNDER, SCOTT GROWTH STRATEGIES
"I grew up with all boys and I have two daughters. You can’t talk to women the same way that you would talk to boys—and that’s not bad at all. My daughters have really challenged me to change how I communicate. They really challenged me to think about how I communicate with them. There is a lot of opportunity to listen and learn from women in the workplace. As a society, men don’t do a very good job at this. I work with mostly women, including my daughters, and this dynamic has taught me a lot about communicating with empathy and compassion. All of my team members at my consulting firm are women, and that’s not by design, rather by happenstance. They hold me accountable and show me the importance of how to allow healthy communication and expressing emotions in the workplace."
Danielle Paulus DIRECTOR OF CAPITAL PROJECTS, OAK GROVE
"A lesson that I have learned is to assume positive intent whenever possible. Most often with the world moving at lightning speed, we are quick to tell ourselves a story of what has happened or why someone is reacting a certain way. By using the idea of 'assume positive intent' it steers you away from negativity, gossip, or anger. I have learned that using this technique, going directly to the person, and asking questions or finding out the 'why' of what happens helps to solve many issues."
Jodi Duncan PRESIDENT, FLINT GROUP
"When you make difficult choices, you will be judged. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, there will be people who disagree with your decisions, who will try and tear you apart. You have to be mindful of where criticism is coming from and who you are listening to. I was taught this lesson early on in my career, but it didn’t sink in until decades later.
Fowzia Adde EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, IMMIGRANT DEVELOPMENT CENTER
"One lesson I have learned from the work I have done is that you should never be too afraid or too shy to ask a question."
Kimberly Peterson COO, LILLESTOL RESEARCH
"Take a deep breath, wait a little while and think before you speak or respond to a stressful situation. I've learned it the hard way by not doing just that. It’s easy to quickly respond in heated conversation whether in person or via email with something you'll regret saying later. I know it took several situations for me to learn this lesson, as well as just plain aging, maturity, and professionalism. I'm not perfect and I slip up sometimes, but I am definitely better than I was 10 years ago. If I was given the same situation now versus then... I know I'd handle it better and with much more maturity and that is growth!"
Mark Hagerott CHANCELLOR, NORTH DAKOTA UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
"After events or projects, conduct reviews to assess performance, identify lessons learned, and make necessary improvements."
Jodee Bock OWNER AND FOUNDER, JODEEBOCK.COM
"It's about a harmony between external validation and internal confidence. It’s knowing the distinction between confidence and arrogance. Confidence is inside and arrogance shows up outside. It’s knowing how to be present on the court or the field so you don't get derailed by a bad play but also being able to see the big picture. There’s something about focusing on the game you're in—including the individual plays inside that game—and being unattached enough to the outcome that it doesn't throw your world off if you lose. You can be committed to a certain outcome without being attached to there only being one certain way to get there. Lots of things happen in a game that are outside your personal control. A personal example for me is fouling. If a ref calls a foul on me, I can either be really upset because I don’t agree with the call, which will take me out of the next few plays, or I can adjust the way I play to the way the game is being called. I can be stubborn and attached or I can be smart and see the bigger picture. Understanding that bigger picture sooner than later is a gift on so many planes that will serve athletes who are still playing their games and those who bring their awareness to the next 'game' they play at work."
"Be creative and color outside the lines. No one ever changes the world by doing what everyone else has done. Tap into that part of you that only you can present to the world and embrace your uniqueness. As an entrepreneur, you are already different. Embrace it."
John
Fisher
FOUNDING PASTOR, SOJOURN CHURCH
"Read biographies of dead people. I take a real interest in presidential history, and other figures throughout history that were made for 'such a time.' Outside of studying my Bible, I find being a student of history to be one of the most impactful pieces of achieving my goals."
Dakota Don DAKOTA DON'S ARTISAN WAFFLES
"The progress of Dakota Don’s Artisan Waffles can be linked to guidance from mentors and programs available to new ND companies. My SCORE mentors and my InnovateND advisor provided objective and unbiased perspectives in regular meetings. Our discussions helped me establish and evaluate goals, set guidelines, and meet deadlines. Their experience with the larger business community and contacts available were key to the progress I have made."
Patrick Kirby FOUNDER, DO GOOD BETTER CONSULTING
"If the only time you contact your customers is to ask them to buy something, they’re going to stop picking up the phone and quit opening their emails. If you are a nonprofit, you have to be genuinely interested in why a person donates to you, as your ability to customize the message and match a supporter’s passion with a program is critical. Similarly, for-profits should be genuinely interested in why a customer is a customer."
Josh Marineau ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MANAGEMENT, NDSU
"Building your network is not just about influence and performance, it’s about helping others as well. The mutual benefit of social networks is a critical aspect of its power—the more you connect, the more others are connected to you, and the more the organization benefits. Connected organizations and teams perform better!"
Kirk Anton FOUNDER, HEAT TRANSFER WAREHOUSE
"We really like to analyze our employees and make sure we’re putting them in the ‘right seats on the bus.’ I think that’s one way we’ve kept employees here is by putting them in the roles they’re supposed to be in and allowing them to grow and flourish in their roles. If they’re not succeeding, it’s kind of my fault. It means I haven’t given them the right tools or put them in the right spot."
Shontarius D. Aikens, Ph.D. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MANAGEMENT, OFFUTT SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AT CONCORDIA COLLEGE
"Focus on continuous improvement. Think about the first time you did an activity (e.g., riding a bicycle, playing an instrument, etc.). Chances are that you weren’t as good the first time, but after multiple attempts, you improved. Becoming a good manager can feel like a trial-and-error period that includes lots of ups and downs. The advice here is to strive to become better each day. This would include reading books, attending workshops, or finding a coach/ mentor to help one improve their managerial skills."
Erin D. Larsgaard ATTORNEY, WOLD JOHNSON, P.C.
"Be intentional about doing what is right, even in the small things: be on time, smile a lot, go the extra mile, and be kind to everyone no matter the circumstances. These are the little things that matter more than we realize in the moment, both professionally and personally. We don't know who is watching or how these small actions will affect us later on."
Garrett Moon CO-FOUNDER,
COSCHEDULE
"We really embrace failure around here. We encourage new employees that are a couple of months in to start trying new things. We want them to take risks, make mistakes, and understand that we are giving them a lot of latitude to fail."
"There are many advantages to hiring early talent, and I think sometimes it’s easy to miss the mark with this. ‘Early talent’ consists of individuals starting out in their careers, with professional experience that could range from 0-3 years. Being proactive and connecting with our future workforce is a key element to building a pipeline and your brand. Build strong partnerships within your community, colleges, and universities by speaking to classes, attending career fairs, and hosting events. Marvin provides hands-on training for people who are new to manufacturing and are interested in pursuing a career within the industry."
Chris Thompson FOUNDER/OWNER, CHRIS THOMPSON LLC
"Ask better questions, get better answers. Notice the difference when you ask this question to yourself, ‘Why can’t I figure this out?’ versus ‘What are all of the steps I can take as I figure this out?’ Our brain wants to be helpful so when we ask it a question, it’s going to try to answer it. Ask questions that put it to work creating solutions."
Katie Ehlis FOUNDER/OWNER, THE VANITY BAR
"Show up smart—we’re not talking about book smarts, we’re talking about emotional intelligence. By having self-awareness and being able to read and recognize others' emotions in the room, as well as recognizing your own self-worth, builds on how we can give and receive mutual respect."
Eric Miller OWNER, DWEL
"Sometimes you need to just keep it simple and start with paper and pencil. Once you determine your idea makes sense, invest in creating amazing processes and implementing technology."
Erick Roder OWNER, RODEMERICA
"Leverage your network, talk to other people that have started a business for advice."
Frederick Edwards Jr. CO-FOUNDER, UMOJA INC.
"Demonstrate the tangible impact of your work. Share success stories, data, and testimonials that highlight the positive changes you are affecting in your community."
Scott Meyer CO-FOUNDER, CHIPP.AI
"I always recommend having a place to share what you’re doing with AI. Right now, I think the biggest problem is people feel like they can’t use AI—that it should be hidden or whatever, but you should share. One of the simplest ways to go about this would be to have a shared Google doc where everyone can copy and paste the things they have been using AI for. Then, say, once a month, the team could meet and people could talk through the different things they did."
Jae Dewald AREA DIRECTOR OF SALES, S&L HOSPITALITY
"Be more than just your job title. Be a part of your community in as many ways as you can. Volunteer, give back, join a hobby club, whatever you can do to be involved. Is your company big enough to have committees inside your organization like the holiday party or volunteer projects committee? Get on that thing. You’d be amazed at what this can do for people’s perceptions of you, including your leaders."
Vanessa Williamson CO-OWNER, FARMENTED FOODS
"A piece of advice I have for young entrepreneurs, especially female entrepreneurs, is so many people are going to try and tell you what you should do, and some of that advice could be great and should be welcomed, but some shouldn’t. What I’ve learned is that I know our product best and I know our business best. And while it’s so important for us to be open to learning new things, if something doesn’t feel right to me, I don’t need to do it."
Connor
Johnson BUSINESS COACH, HATCH
COACHING
"Regardless of industry, we work with people and we work with ourselves. How much time a week do you spend studying human behavior and how much time a week do you spend studying your own behavior? We all should set aside some time studying these every single week."
Serareh Campion DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS, FMWF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
"Put yourself out there to have coffee with someone you look up to who is ahead of your professional journey—it doesn't matter if they're the same age as you. Make sure to ask questions, listen to their answers, and learn from the lessons they’ve lived. Our best resource is the people around us. Learn from the lessons they’ve lived."
Toby Kommer OWNER, HAGA KOMMER
"A lot of people, when it comes to personal finance, will have 2-4 months of expenses saved in the bank in case something happens. I think from a business perspective, it's wise to do the same thing. Obviously, each business is unique in terms of the overhead they have and all of the other factors at play. But overall, it's a good practice."

ABOUT MOBILE PRO
Mobile Pro
LIVE PRODUCTION EVENTS GROWTH LEADER
Mobile Pro, based in North Dakota, is the premier live event production company in the region. Their dedicated team ensures that every technical aspect of live events is executed flawlessly in order to help clients achieve their desired outcomes. As the region's only company with the most trusted experts in video, audio, and lighting, Mobile Pro takes pride in delivering exceptional quality. With a team of over 65 professionals and a client base exceeding 300, they continue to grow each year by carefully selecting clients who align with their core values and focus.
Four Tips From Mobile Pro on What to Look for in a Live Event Partner
Ask for Referrals
Many times other companies that are similar in size and scope can help give you a 25,000 foot view of how that production company performed.
Ask for a Plan for When Things Don't Go According to Plan
Or an idea on what happens when last-minute details pop up and how they would handle them. Many people say they are cool under pressure but when it comes down to it, many often fall short.
Don't Shop Solely on Price
When it comes to choosing a production partner it is hard to compare one company's price to another. The only way you can really compare pricing is to
ensure you have provided both companies with the same information to obtain an accurate and complete estimate. If one company is more thorough than another, then you will be left with a price difference that may not make sense.
Focus on Planning Team and Point Person
Find a company that has an amazing planning team and point person. There's nothing worse than working with a company that passes you off from person to person until you have no idea who can help you get things done. A truly amazing company will assign a team of individuals who will consistently work with you to execute your event from start to finish.

CAN HELP
BY JOHN MACHACEK
s the Chief Innovation Officer at GFMEDC, I’ve interacted with hundreds of entrepreneurs over the past decade. Every entrepreneur is different, as are their stories, stages, and needs, so my assistance and responses to them are never quite a cookiecutter template. However, here are some most common resources I often share with startups.
ABOUT ILT ACADEMY
ILT Academy is a startup-focused education platform aimed at empowering entrepreneurs through practical training, mentorship, and community-building.
For those that are early stage, and sometimes still in the idea phase, I’d really suggest looking at the ILT Academy lean startup program. In a cohort model over 10 weekly evening sessions, ILT helps participants with the customer discovery process and validate the idea. The program has been available to Minnesota entrepreneurs for several years and was rolled out in North Dakota this past year.
ABOUT SCORE
SCORE is a nonprofit organization that offers free mentorship, workshops, and resources to help entrepreneurs and small business owners succeed.
In addition to ILT, SCORE is another good resource for both early and more seasoned entrepreneurs. This SBAsupported program has a local and national network of volunteers who can provide mentorship and advice as entrepreneurs work through their business planning. ABOUT ND SBDC
The North Dakota Small Business Development Center offers comprehensive support to entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout the state. With a network of experienced advisors, it provides free, confidential guidance on starting, managing, and growing businesses. Services include help with business planning, financial forecasting, market research, loan preparation, and marketing strategies.
As someone has worked on their idea a bit more, our local SBDCs (Small Business Development Centers) are probably the most common referrals I make for things like business planning, financial forecasting, market research, and more. Our regional North Dakota office is at the NDSU Research & Technology Park. The regional Minnesota office is on the campus of M-State. Many banks will send young businesses to the SBDC for guidance on projecting revenues, expenses, and cashflow that helps better assess the businesses’ funding needs and repayment capacity.

Founded in 2000, the NDWBC focuses on amplifying the economic voice of women-led businesses across the state. The ND Women’s Business Center looks to amplify the voice and success of women business owners, providing a wide variety of resources like business coaching, trainings, events, and intensive workshops.
ABOUT GENER8TOR
gener8tor is a nationally ranked accelerator program that supports high-growth startups through mentorship, funding, and access to a broad network of investors and corporate partners.
The gener8tor accelerator and gBETA programs have been great additions to our region. These programs are more applicable to startups that have developed their product or MVP, are scalable, and will likely need future funding to scale. gBETA is a free 7-week program for early-stage companies, providing coaching, mentoring, meetups, pitch opportunities, and more. With the accelerator providing a $100k investment and concierge approach, a 12-week program for 5-6 high-growth startups per cohort.
There are many more resources for entrepreneurs, especially in funding programs, but it would take me much more space to dive into those. I suggest you check out our Frequently Used Resources on the Entrepreneurs section of our website (gfmedc.com/ doing-business-here/entrepreneurs/), as we do a great job of aggregating area resources for you to look further into.
ABOUT EMERGING PRAIRIE
Emerging Prairie is a nonprofit organization based in Fargo, North Dakota, dedicated to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. It supports the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem by organizing various events and initiatives, including the popular StartupBREW Fargo.
In addition to these tangible programs, I also would HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting out and about to connect with others in our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Many area startups look to personal connections as a great way to improve their business while also being an active participants in the ecosystem. The access and ability for genuine engagement has been part of our region’s special magic and is something we hear repeatedly from newcomers. Emerging Prairie continues to be a huge catalyst for that and has done an excellent job with their events and their startup programming to help foster connections. I always encourage a founder to connect with their Startup Programs team to get added to the email list for future communications and events. Also, subscribe to the Techstars Startup Digest Fargo biweekly newsletter to learn about resources and the many events & webinars to learn and engage.
Every entrepreneur is different, and every day is different for an entrepreneur. Knowing where to start and look can be difficult, so please know that you have a community full of people who want to help you succeed. A key step is letting others know what you have going on, and then ultimately that can lead to the question many of us here ask, “What can we do as a community to help you succeed?“

Tips For Choosing The Best Payroll Provider
Find a Payroll Partner Who Understands You
When picking a payroll provider, look for one who really gets your business. You want a team that understands the unique challenges you face and can help you navigate them easily—no cookie-cutter solutions here!
Seek Out Tailored Solutions
Every business has different payroll needs, so don't settle for a onesize-fits-all approach. Choose a provider that offers customizable services designed to fit your specific situation, whether you’re just starting out or looking to scale.
Make Sure Support Is Always Available
In today's fast-paced environment, having access to your payroll provider is essential. Look for a company that's reachable when you need them. You shouldn't settle for short work weeks, summer hours, or having to submit a ticket to wait for a stranger from generic support.
Know What You're Paying For
You should be able to define what your payroll provider is charging you. Make sure their fees are clearly defined and easy to understand.
Choose a Company That Grows With You
Your business is always evolving, and your payroll needs will change too. Select a provider that's able to grow alongside you and can adapt their services to match your evolving needs.
Prioritize Personalized Support
There is no substitute for personalized support. Look for a payroll provider that works directly with you and not a generic support team. Dedicated support staff provide ease of mind regarding payroll and tax compliance.

Top Ten Tips for a Brand Refresh
with
The beginning of a new year sparks thoughts of change and the promise of new possibilities. We often think about this in terms of ourselves.
“This is the year I’m going to eat healthy, organize my garage, read more, exercise more…” But what about your company? The beginning of the year is a great time to think about a brand refresh as well.
People will buy from companies they know and trust. We know new and improved branding can boost sales results, but how exactly does that work? And if you already have an established brand, what’s the point of refreshing it?
Powerful brands are visible
Well-defined brands are easy to spot. For consumers, employees and potential employees, a strong brand strategy makes decision-making easier. Whether you are purchasing a product or service, looking for a job or deciding to stay with the company you are at, a good brand strategy makes those considerations easier.
Brand building gives optionality
As your company grows, you may want to consider moving into new and growing categories. Refreshing your brand strategy allows you to consider the options that fit your company today and will continue to into the future.
Your company isn’t the same
Along with the world around us, business is continuously evolving. As marketing advances so must your brand. Branding used to be about communicating the same message to all audiences. Now, we need to consider the many channels and numerous audiences we are trying to reach.
Refresh doesn’t mean abandon
Start where you are today, evaluate what’s working, what’s changed and how you see your business evolving. Over time, your brand may have gone stale or been neglected. Take another look to find where it can be revived. A good brand refresh allows you to consider all the good brand equity you already have.
Powerful brands demand stronger pricing
People are willing to spend extra money on brands they know, trust and believe in. If you stay true to your defined brand promise, you can increase your value.
Investing in a refresh saves time
If done correctly, a brand refresh can build and brighten your current brand. By revisiting where you are today and what you will be in the future is an investment that not only clarifies who you are but becomes a priceless tool for what to communicate.
Create clarity and focus
Can your employees define what you offer? Not at the basic tactical level but truly describe what your company is at its core? Refreshing your brand is an excellent opportunity to establish your brand voice and get your team moving forward in the same direction.
Attract the best talent
In this incredibly tight workforce market, a solid brand strategy can help you attract—and retain—good employees. Younger generations are likely to evaluate the values of the company they are considering working for more seriously than in the past.
