Welcome.

Greetings to all the wonderful families of Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo.

As a parent myself, I know firsthand the challenges and rewards of raising a family here. That's why we've put together this magazine, a practical, straightforward guide for parents in our community.

In this magazine, we've gathered some of the community's favorite resources and spots in the area for families.

We also know how important local businesses are to our families' lives. So, we've highlighted some of the best spots in town— from where kids eat free to family-friendly spaces. These are the places that make our community a great place to raise kids.

We've also put together lists to help you find what you need quickly. Whether it's a place for an afternoon outing or a new activity for the family, these lists are designed to help you make the most of what our area has to offer.

As a parent and community member, I believe in the importance of supporting each other and making the most of our local resources. This magazine aims to do just that— connect families and help you enjoy life in Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo.

Bridging the Grief Gap for Bereaved Parents in Fargo

In the delicate and often overwhelming world of child loss, Haven, a Fargo-based nonprofit, has emerged as a refuge of hope and healing for parents navigating unimaginable grief. Founded by Jen Burgard after the loss of her son Henry, Haven exists to ensure no parent has to walk that journey alone.

“There’s something so transformative about being able to look someone in the eye and know that they understand what you’ve been through,” Jen said.

Haven’s mission doesn't begin and end with supporting families, it goes beyond and educates the broader community and healthcare systems on the compassion and care that bereaved parents deserve.

With services ranging from heartfelt Healing Gifts to community-centered workshops, Haven is not only a nonprofit, it’s a lifeline for families in Fargo-Moorhead.

“We believe that educating the general public on grief and loss creates a more empathetic and supportive community for us all. It’s about creating lasting change, not just for today’s grieving parents, but for generations to come,” Jen said.

Did You Know?

1 in 4 pregnancies in the U.S. ends in loss.

The rate of stillbirths in the U.S. has not changed since the 1940s.

Haven serves parents who have lost a child to miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death, or child death.

Healing Gifts for Heartbroken Families

At the heart of Haven’s mission are its thoughtfully curated Healing Gifts—packages designed to bring comfort to parents in the early days of grief. Each gift is filled with items that Jen herself found solace in, including hand-poured candles, journals, books, and local products. These gifts, often requested by friends and family for grieving parents, act as tangible reminders that they are not alone.

Haven Healing Gifts Include:

•Hand-poured candles

•Journals and books on grief

•Self-care items like bath salts and essential oils

•Gift cards to local businesses

•A carefully selected resource guide for parents

Anyone can request a Healing Gift for themselves or someone they know. "We want these families to feel seen, supported, and cared for," Jen said.

A Growing Community of Support

In addition to Healing Gifts, Haven hosts various events throughout the year aimed at building a community. Their events range from simple family get-togethers to in-depth workshops and retreats.

Some of the most notable events include:

•Wreath Making Workshop: Held annually in December, this event helps parents create something beautiful in honor of their child.

•Floral Classes: Hosted every Mother’s Day to celebrate mothers who have experienced loss.

•Remembrance Retreats: Both singleday and overnight retreats where parents can come together to share their stories and find peace.

These gatherings offer parents the chance to not only connect with others who understand them but also to engage in healing practices in a safe and supportive environment.

Awareness Through Education

The Landscape of Loss

Haven provides vetted and up-to-date resources for grieving families. Like recommended media and other online resources, along with remembrance items you can shop for.

Haven’s mission extends far beyond the families it serves directly. The organization is committed to transforming how the healthcare system and the community approach the reality of child loss. Haven works closely with hospitals and nursing schools to educate healthcare providers on the importance of compassionate care for bereaved parents.

“We want to ensure that parents in our community have access to the best care possible when faced with the unimaginable,” said Jen. “Grief is complex, and the care provided in those early days can shape a family’s healing journey.”

In partnership with local healthcare providers, Haven has introduced several trainings and resources to educate nurses, doctors, and hospital staff on how to best support families who have lost a child. They’ve also developed resources that help families navigate the medical system to make sure they feel empowered and cared for.

Recognizing that healing takes many forms, Haven hosts a podcast called “Landscape of Loss,” where families share their stories of grief and survival. This podcast has become a powerful tool for raising awareness about child loss and helping families connect with those in similar situations. Episodes can be found on all major streaming platforms and directly through Haven’s website at havenmidwest.org

Support Haven’s Mission

Haven relies on the generosity of the FargoMoorhead community to continue its important work and ensure the nonprofit continues to live by its mission—to redefine life after loss. Donations ensure that Healing Gifts remain available, events stay free for families in need, and retreats offer scholarships for parents who could otherwise not attend.

With child loss affecting 1 in 4 pregnancies, Haven’s role in the community is critical. Their work is making strides in ensuring that every grieving parent feels supported, seen, and heard.

If you or someone you know is navigating the heartbreak of child loss, visit havenmidwest.org to learn more about the services Haven offers, request a Healing Gift, or find information about upcoming events.

Keys to Confidence When Buying a Home

Home Loan Approval Tips:

Get Approved First, Shop with Confidence

Getting approved before you start looking at homes might feel like an extra step, but it’s a powerful one. When you’re approved, you’ll have a clear idea of your budget, which helps you focus your search on homes that are within your price range. Plus, a letter of approval gives you the confidence to make an offer on a home you love, knowing you have the financial backing to support it. It also shows sellers that you’re serious and ready to move forward, which can make a big difference in a competitive market. You’ll feel more relaxed, knowing you’re on the right track and working within your means.

with Kayla Kallander

Be Ready with Your Documents

Getting approved for a home loan requires some paperwork, but it’s all part of ensuring you’re set up for success. In addition to gathering an application, your lender will review documents such as pay stubs, W-2s, tax returns, and bank statements. In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional documentation, such as school transcripts, proof of Social Security income, or divorce papers. Having everything in order upfront can help speed up the process and reduce any last-minute stress, so take some time to gather what’s needed. This way, you’ll feel prepared and confident.

Don't Just "Click and Get a Mortgage"

It may be tempting to fill out an online form and wait for approval, but it’s important to engage with a lender who takes the time to truly understand your needs. The best loan officers are genuinely interested in your goals, preferences, and any concerns you may have. By having a conversation—even over the phone or via video—you give your lender a chance to tailor solutions that are right for you. A 20-minute chat can make all the difference, ensuring you’re getting the best loan for your specific situation. Every scenario is different, and a mortgage is not one-sizefits-all.

Be Open and Honest with Your Lender

Transparency is key to a smooth and successful home-buying journey. If you’re facing any potential changes in your financial situation, whether it’s a change in income or a past event that might affect

your approval, being upfront about it will help avoid surprises down the road. Lenders want to help you find the right loan for your situation, and the more they understand, the better they can support you. If there’s anything on your mind, don’t hesitate to share it. Open, honest communication can prevent delays and help you feel more at ease through the process.

Know Your Numbers, Know Your Comfort

Before you start searching for your new home, take the time to understand what feels comfortable for you financially. While your lender will tell you the maximum loan amount

you qualify for, that doesn’t always mean that’s the amount you should borrow. To avoid stress later, create a budget that reflects your current expenses and financial goals. Your monthly mortgage payment includes not just the principal and interest, but also property taxes, hazard insurance and possibly special assessments, mortgage insurance, and HOA fees. By clearly defining what fits within your budget, you can confidently move forward knowing you’re making a choice that aligns with your financial well-being.

Navigating the homebuying process can feel overwhelming at times, but with these simple tips, you can approach it with clarity and peace of mind. You deserve to feel confident and supported every step of the way!

N Building Strength, Confidence, & Community

At Four Star Ninja Academy, fitness goes beyond traditional workouts. Instead, they offer an adventure through obstacles that teach perseverance, courage, and resilience through a unique blend of ninja warrior-style training, encouraging kids and adults to conquer challenges both on and off the course. Co-founded in 2019 by Brad Butcher and Dustin Hjelmstad, the gym believes that fitness should be fun, accessible, and empowering for everyone.

Ninja Training for All Ages

The academy offers a range of programs tailored for various age groups and skill levels, starting with Mini Ninja classes for kids as young as three to beginners, advanced ninjas, and even competition teams. The gym's core values—Strength, Courage, Commitment, and Confidence—are woven into every class to build physical fitness and mental resilience.

"Ninja obstacles aren't easy to conquer on the first try," Co-Founder Dustin said. "But that's the point—learning to fall, get back up, and try again builds both physical and mental strength."

Beyond Classes: Events That Bring the Community Together

Four Star Ninja Academy is also a place where families and friends can celebrate and connect. Birthday parties at the academy are a favorite because they offer customized obstacle courses and exciting competitions led by dedicated instructors. With additional offerings like Nerf Nights, summer camps, field trips, and teambuilding events, the gym has become a place where fun and fitness go hand-in-hand.

For those seeking a less structured experience, the academy’s Open Gym provides access to its obstacles which allows participants to explore at their own pace.

Co-Founders with a Passion for Fitness

Both Brad and Dustin bring personal stories of transformation and resilience to the academy. Dustin, a coach and ninja competitor, turned his life around by embracing fitness and nutrition, losing over 45 pounds in the process. His experience inspired him to help others discover their own strength through ninja training.

Brad’s journey to fitness came after his third back surgery. Determined to regain control of his health, he developed a workout routine focused on full-body exercises. Now in better shape than ever, Brad believes that age is just a number and is passionate about showing others that it's never too late to get fit.

"Our goal is to provide a healthy outlet where people of all ages can grow stronger and more resilient every day," said Brad. "It’s not just about the obstacles on the course—it’s about overcoming challenges in life with the support of a community."

A Record of Success

In just a few years, Four Star Ninja Academy has built an impressive reputation. Each year, more than 20 of its athletes qualify for world championships, with many finishing in the top 10 and some even securing spots in the top 3.

Guiding Families, Building Futures

For over a century, Catholic Charities North Dakota has provided unwavering support for children, families, and individuals across the state. Their work revolves around one mission: ensuring that every child has a loving, stable home and every parent has the resources to succeed. Through innovative adoption programs and compassionate family services, Catholic Charities has become a trusted guide for families navigating life’s most meaningful journeys.

CComprehensive Adoption Services for Every Need

Catholic Charities offers a variety of adoption programs tailored to meet families' unique needs. Whether it's domestic infant adoption, identified adoption, or intercountry adoption, their Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services program offers guidance throughout the entire process. With the help of experienced social workers, expectant parents receive nonjudgmental support, from pregnancy decisions through delivery and beyond. These services are provided at no cost, ensuring that every pregnant woman has access to vital care, regardless of her decision to parent or make an adoption plan.

For those adopting children from foster care, the Adults Adopting Special Kids (AASK) program plays a key role. Partnering with the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, the AASK program helps foster children find permanent, nurturing homes. “It’s about building lasting, meaningful relationships,” the organization said. There is room in every child’s life for the love of both birth and adoptive families.

A Network of Support Beyond Adoption

Adoption is just the beginning of the journey. Catholic Charities recognizes that families need long-term support, which is why the ND Post Adopt Network

exists. This innovative service provides crucial post-adoption care, including support groups, referrals, training, and family-focused events. Summer camps and winter retreats allow adopted children and their families to build lifelong connections and the sense of community essential to successful adoptions.

Post Adoption Coordinators, based in different regions of North Dakota, ensure families have access to resources no matter where they live. "We’re here to help families thrive," they explained, recognizing that each family’s needs are unique and may evolve over time.

Services

•Adults Adopting Special Kids Program - provides adoption services for children in foster care and the families who adopt them.

•ND Post Adopt Network - provides support for families after adoption or guardianship finalization including support groups, referrals, training, activities, camps, and more.

•Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services Program - provides domestic infant and international adoption services. They also provide free services for pregnant women including decision-making counseling, parenting education, needed baby supplies, and adoption education and facilitation.

Giving Back to the Community

Catholic Charities North Dakota’s commitment to serving others extends beyond its formal programs. The organization also collects gently used baby supplies throughout the year and redistributes them to families in need. Whether through material support or life-changing programs, the organization lives by its values: serving people in need and advocating for the common good.

How to Get Involved

With a focus on creating lasting change, Catholic Charities invites the community to support its mission. Families interested in adoption, guardianship, or parenting education can explore the organization’s many resources. For those looking to give back, donations and volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year.

As they move forward into 2025, Catholic Charities North Dakota continues to build on its legacy of care. Guided by compassion and supported by the community, they remain committed to their core belief: every child deserves a loving home.

"This is the place to take kids! They loved the coloring table and Nintendos and "Ortho Bucks" to save up for prizes. Everyone was great with the kids. They are already looking forward to the next visit!"

Healthy Smiles: A Lifelong Investment

Led by board-certified orthodontists Dr. Ryan West and Dr. Emerson Ehlis, WE Ortho provides orthodontic care for all ages. If you’ve ever found yourself wishing for doctors who are truly experts in their field but who also never miss a chance to dress elaborately on Halloween, are known for some pretty solid dad jokes, and are big fans of bringing fun to everything they do—then WE Ortho is the spot for you and your family!

TThe Importance of Early Exams

Early exams make all the difference in allowing for different treatment options. Getting your kids checked out early—ideally around the age of seven—allows WE Ortho to take a proactive approach while your child is still in an active growth phase. Not all children require early intervention, but those that do greatly benefit from getting a ‘head start’ and often have lower overall treatment costs than those who have their first consultation later in adolescence.

Advanced Technology for Patient Comfort

WE Ortho is proud to utilize the latest technology to provide top-notch care. They use handheld scanners to create 3D models of your teeth, which are then used to plan every phase of your treatment with precision and efficiency. Anyone who has ever experienced the ‘goopy molds’ of the past understands that this makes a world of difference for patient comfort. Plus, the clinic uses an in-house digital lab to keep treatments on-track and customized to fit each person’s unique anatomy perfectly.

Creating a Fun Orthodontic Journey

WE Ortho believes that “orthodontic care” and “fun” should be synonymous. The energy in their offices is contagious—and it feels genuine, joyful, and truly patient-centered. Patients earn “WE Ortho Bucks” for things like good brushing habits, wearing their rubber bands, etc. Kiddos especially love to save them up and redeem them for prizes like gift cards, Bluetooth speakers, or electric toothbrushes. They often have monthly in-house contests and occasionally break out into song when parents request a little extra celebration for their child… but don’t worry, being serenaded by your Orthodontist and Dental Assistant is not required.

A Mission of Family-Oriented Care

WE Ortho isn't just for the kids, they treat the entire family! They work to create a warm, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere that patients of all ages will be comfortable in.

For a comprehensive orthodontic experience focused on health, confidence, and family-centered care, WE Ortho invites new patients to book a consultation online and discover the benefits of a healthy smile.

A Behind the Doors of Great Kids

& Thrive

Therapy: How Their Team Helps Kids Grow

It's possible through occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology at Great Kids Therapy. Their goal is to empower children and their families to unlock their potential and create a world where every child can succeed without limits. Since its founding in 1996, the organization has grown from humble beginnings into a trusted resource for pediatric therapy in the Fargo community. With its playful approach to therapy and a commitment to evidence-based practices, Great Kids Therapy believes in treating the whole child—recognizing that a child's success is intertwined with their family and environment.

A Journey Rooted in Compassion and Growth

Founded by occupational therapist Sarah Meinhardt, Great Kids Therapy began with a simple, personalized approach. From 1996 until 2016, Sarah operated the business from her home and vehicle, providing hands-on care to children in need. Along the way, she was driven by her expertise in sensory therapy and her dedication to helping kids thrive. This helped Sarah build a practice focused on meaningful progress.

In 2016, Great Kids Therapy opened its first clinic in West Fargo, which has helped them in their mission to serve the community on a larger scale. At the time, Sarah was the sole full-time therapist, supported by part-time providers.

In 2021, a new chapter began when occupational therapist Kelsey Kopp (Hoffmann) joined the team with the vision of purchasing the business. On August 1, 2022, Kelsey officially took over ownership, and under her leadership, the clinic has experienced rapid growth. In less than a year, the organization expanded to a new space ten times larger than the original clinic, allowing them to serve more families and continue their mission of fostering a positive and supportive environment.

A Therapy Experience Like No Other

Great Kids Therapy believes that children learn best through play and interaction. The team is committed

to making therapy fun, engaging, and motivating. Each child that walks through their doors is treated like family, and the team works closely with parents to set meaningful goals that reflect the child's unique needs and strengths.

Building a Community of Support

One of the hallmarks of Great Kids Therapy is its commitment to building a supportive community around the families it serves. The organization understands that parents and siblings play a vital role in a child’s development, and it aims to provide families with the tools and support they need to thrive together.

“We believe in the power of honesty, creativity, and respect,” Kelsey said.

Great Kids Therapy offers free screenings for children, making it easy for parents to take the first step toward addressing developmental needs.

“Our goal is to celebrate each child’s uniqueness and use those qualities to help them make lasting progress,” Kelsey said. With its expanded facility and growing team, Great Kids Therapy is well-positioned to continue making a meaningful impact in the community.

Bridging the Gap with a New Standard in Psychiatric Care

Dakota Adult & Pediatric Psychiatry offers hope for individuals and families navigating the challenges of psychiatric care. Founded by Dr. Douglas Hess, DO, and Aubrey Hess, PA-C, the clinic offers a community-driven, patientcentric approach, bridging critical gaps in care with timely, compassionate, and innovative solutions.

AA Mission Born from Personal Experience

The founders' deep commitment to mental health care stems from personal experiences with mental illness within their families. Both Dr. Douglas Hess, DO and Aubrey Hess, MPAS, PA-C, have confronted the devastating impact of losing loved ones to suicide—Dr. Douglas Hess, DO, his grandmother, and Aubrey Hess, MPAS, PA-C, her uncle. These tragedies shaped their mission to provide accessible psychiatric care and break down the barriers that prevent timely interventions.

“We wanted to offer timely and compassionate comprehensive care to the community as the wait times, even now at some facilities, extend from six months to a year. Our motivation to provide care stems from personal history and the desire to prevent others from experiencing the pain we’ve known,” they said.

Individualized, Family-Focused Care

At Dakota Adult & Pediatric Psychiatry, each patient is treated as a unique individual rather than a number on a chart. “We treat our patients like family—whether it's a mother, father, child, or grandparent,” Dr. Douglas Hess, DO said. This personalized approach includes direct access to providers through a patient portal.

The clinic often provides care to multiple members of the same family to create a deeper understanding of family dynamics and foster more effective treatment outcomes. Aubrey Hess, MPAS, PA-C explained, “It’s rewarding to see children grow and heal alongside their families. Treating multiple members allows us to grasp the intricacies of their relationships, leading to better care.”

Pioneers in Cutting-Edge Treatments

Dakota Adult & Pediatric Psychiatry is at the forefront of psychiatric innovation and is the first facility in North Dakota to offer Spravato nasal spray as a treatment option for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. Spravato has transformed the lives of many, with Dr. Douglas Hess, DO reporting that nearly 100% of their patients have experienced a reduction in depressive symptoms. With success rates nearing 80%, this non-invasive treatment offers new hope for those who have not responded to traditional methods.

New Provider Alert!

We recently added provider Jordyn Buckmier, PMHNP who brings a wealth of knowledge to our practice with years of psychiatric experience. Both Dr. Douglas Hess, DO and Aubrey Hess, MPAS, PA-C have nearly 15 years’ experience. Each provider sees children through adults and are accepting new patients. Our wait time is usually the next day as we can fit most patients in immediately.

oming to South Fargo in the fall of 2028, The Fargo Moorhead Science Museum (FMSM) is one of the area's most anticipated projects. The community project, which will be located at Urban Plains, will "reimagine what a science museum can be," where curious minds of all ages can explore and engage in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM)—here's everything we know so far.

"Like so many in our community, I have dreamed of having something like this available for my family and students (I taught geology and paleontology for 15 years)," Interim Executive Director Jessie Rock said. "In 2018, a reporter followed me to an outreach event at a local elementary school and quoted me saying, 'FM needs a natural science museum.' The community response to this statement was overwhelming—educators and families began asking how they could help make this a reality— and the fire was lit."

Rock and her assembled team spent the next few years researching and developing a business plan, gathering community input, and working with museum planning professionals at Gyroscope Inc. to develop a visitor experience plan.

Fast forward to 2024, the project has gained significant momentum through community support, with detailed plans and renderings showing everything visitors can anticipate.

The Fargo Moorhead Science Museum plans to host blockbuster traveling exhibitions, adult evening programs, science-themed expos, festivals, and movie screenings. The museum will also offer workshops, camps, and classes, providing interactive learning experiences for all ages.

Permanent exhibits will integrate all aspects of STEMM, featuring topics that uniquely focus on our region while remaining globally relevant. Year-round rotating programming will allow visitors to have a novel experience each time they visit. Community classrooms and event spaces will be available to the public, and a museum-based mobile outreach team will provide STEMM programming and activities for the Fargo-Moorhead community and beyond.

The Science Museum will feature 23,000 square feet of exhibit space, offering 5 permanent experience zones, 2 traveling and sponsored zones, and event spaces.

We’re in This Together honors healthcare, medical, and research professionals whose STEMM contributions enhance our lives and community. This free-admission zone invites visitors to view local science as a means to support one another, spotlighting community caregivers. It will provide a collaborative space where medical professionals, technologists, engineers, and researchers can partner with the museum to promote public health and wellness with broad impact, showcasing the science and technology that drive our region's global competitiveness.

In the "Adapt" area, visitors can experience adaptive sports like archery, cycling, and horseshoes, demonstrating that participation is possible for everyone, regardless of strengths.

The "Repair" space, inspired by the International Café Repair Movement, encourages the preservation of repair skills and

the use of repairable products. It features an extensive toolkit library, 3D printers for fabricating parts, and opportunities for retirees and volunteers to teach repair skills to a new generation. Tinkering is encouraged, creating a hands-on environment for exploration and learning.

The Growing Scientists Lab is a launchpad for cultivating future scientists through hands-on experiences with real tools, data, and experts. It encourages lifelong scientific exploration and connects visitors and classrooms to scientists worldwide. Local STEMM companies will offer programming that includes application processes for tours, internships, or employment, providing aspiring scientists with the skills and confidence for their future careers.

Key features include:

Test Tubes: Large glass cylinders display ongoing experiments.

Cheeky Culture: Visitors participate in a communitysourced cheek swab activity at a digital workbench, with each sample linked to data and magnification for deeper exploration.

Color Harvest: Guests extract pigments from plants, fungi, and yeasts, creating bio paints for STEAM activities, and guests can paint when they visit.

Portal and Bench: This interactive media wall connects museum visitors with local biotech and medical sectors, global scientific institutions, and regional K-12 classrooms.

Support Lab: Visitors learn general lab skills with classes by guest scientists and the opportunity to apply for tours. Badges can be earned for new skills, fostering growth and responsibility.

STEM Workforce Development: FMSM serves as a science learning scaffold, sparking curiosity and providing practical pathways for passionate visitors to pursue STEMM careers.

Science + Fiction blurs the lines between fact and fiction, inviting visitors to explore their complex relationships through engaging STEM experiences. This zone provides accessible entry points for everyone—even those who might feel a museum “is not the place for me.” Here, imagination meets reality as visitors explore themes from pop culture, sci-fi, and world fairs in a hybrid design studio, collector's den, and screening space.

Features include:

Design Studio: Visitors can assemble robots, experiment with artificial intelligence, and program a techno dinosaur.

Ag Tech Zone: Celebrating the Red River Valley’s soils, farming practices, and agricultural innovations, this area

explores big questions like the future of robots in agriculture and the possibility of farming in space. The permanent ag tech theme deepens understanding of soil, seeds, and sun while feeding imaginations.

Key attractions include:

Weather Arcade: Offers hands-on exhibits like a wind tunnel, ground blizzard simulator, and frost-growing station where visitors magnify ice crystals.

Shut That Door: A rotating digital display behind a “front door” revealscrowd-sourced global weather scenes—from tropical storms to dust storms.

Citizen Science: Museum members’ homes and fields contribute real-time weather data to a live dashboard.

Forecasting Station: Visitors use real data to predict weather and track a shipping container from FM as it faces global weather extremes.

Into the Storm features an interactive double helix slide and tornado simulator, honoring Dr. Ted Fujita. Fargo's 1957 tornado played a role in Fujita's research, who later developed the F-scale for measuring tornado intensity in 1971. Visitors explore dynamic weather science through a ramp with immersive storm tunnel experiences, enhanced by sound, vibration, and projections.

Breakthrough is a series of unique environments for discovery, inspired by the Lindenwood section of the Red River. This winding passage explores water, wildlife, and community stories through ecological and geographic borders, highlighting the river’s connection to our lives.

Key features include:

Imagine: From a rooftop vantage, visitors use augmented reality to simulate local and global flooding and drought, view community flood photos, and explore the STEMM behind flood mitigation.

Boundary Games: A large digital floor and augmented reality wall offer immersive experiences for all ages, shifting scales and boundaries in real time.

I See You: This neuroscience-focused space explores brain function through bias tests, face merging, and doppelganger discovery. Visitors can even participate in ongoing research in the Living Laboratory.

In addition to the five main experience zones, a sixth zone is currently in development called "Zoom In Zoom Out" and will include concepts like energy, scale and perspective, magnification, and quantum computation.

The FMSM outreach program offers free educational programming throughout the FM region, sparking curiosity in STEMM fields. Through mobile outreach and admission-free events at libraries, parks, and other public venues, FMSM targets underserved communities, providing hands-on science experiences that make scientific concepts tangible and inspire lifelong enthusiasm.

The program is led by one full-time staff member and supported by community volunteers dedicated to delivering STEMM learning opportunities at local events.

A New Workspace Model for Fargo’s Working Parents

he locally founded Maven Collective is reshaping what it means to work as a parent by creating a co-working space where mothers, fathers, freelancers, and remote workers can gather in a community-minded setting. Founded by Shelby Beach, the space brings to life her vision of a work environment that lets parents balance professional needs and family responsibilities.

Inspired by a mix of personal needs and creative research, Shelby began experimenting with work options before ultimately stumbling upon the idea that would evolve into Maven Collective. However, her journey to this wasn’t straightforward.

“I was working for Bell Bank, and got pregnant with our first child… I went back, but every day I was trying to figure out what I could do to be with her and still make an income," she said.

Shelby found herself constantly pulled between work and motherhood. After working remotely at Bell Bank, she discovered that major cities like Los Angeles and New York had co-working spaces with childcare.

Shelby began piecing together how she could make a similar model work in Fargo, knowing she’d be venturing into new territory.

While the dream took shape, finding the right space proved to be the biggest

Key Features of Maven Collective’s Model:

Coworking Space: With varied seating options and gathering spaces.

Private Offices: Allows members to hold meetings or make calls in a quiet, private space.

Affordable Memberships: Designed to be accessible for working parents, especially mothers.

hurdle. Shelby spent almost two years searching for a building that could support Maven Collective’s childcare needs, office space, and community vibe. She needed something affordable and functional, which wasn’t easy to find in Fargo’s competitive market. That’s when Jenna from Synclaire Events Venue, introduced her to the current Maven Collective building, a beautiful, historic space filled with natural light and original wood floors in downtown Fargo.

As soon as Shelby walked in, she fell in love with the space. In the building, the second floor hosts the coworking space, as well as the Synclaire Events space (which is only accessible on the weekends). The third floor hosts the nursery, naptime rooms, and private offices for rent. The two floors make up Maven.

Childcare in a Mixed-Age Environment: Rather than separate rooms for infants and toddlers, children of all ages interact together supervised.

Community-Oriented Events: Regular yoga classes, craft workshops, and mindful emotions events for caregivers and children.

A Space for Working Moms— and Everyone Else, Too

While Maven Collective’s design caters to working mothers, the space is open to anyone—meaning, men are welcome, and some are even members already.

“I just wanted a space for women to go and be able to have the resources they need and talk to other women about things we’re going through,” Shelby said.

This flexible, inclusive approach has drawn a wide variety of clients, from freelancers and entrepreneurs to remote workers and even several members who are remote employees for companies based in other states, whose employers sponsor their memberships.

Although it was slightly unexpected, Maven has welcomed many photographers and special events into its space. It has been desired by many for its natural light from the large south-facing windows and beautiful, restored interior architecture.

Here's what's available!

Photography: With its bright, airy aesthetic, the space has become a popular rental for headshots, family portraits, and creative shoots.

After-Hours Rentals: Outside regular business hours, the space transforms into an event venue for workshops, family events, and even wedding celebrations.

Unique Events for Parents and Kids: Maven hosts events like story time and min dful emotions classes, which bring parents and kids together for fun and relaxation.

For Shelby, Maven Collective’s biggest success lies in the supportive community it has fostered. It’s a small but crucial difference for working parents who want a better balance between work and family. At Maven, parents get a workspace, peace of mind, and a network. One of Shelby's favorite parts of operating the space is watching mothers bond over shared challenges, whether it’s talking about toddler troubles or celebrating professional wins.

While challenges persist—like coordinating childcare and membership numbers—the rewards have been profound.

With plans for future holiday events, wellness workshops, and open houses, Maven Collective is poised to become a cornerstone of Fargo’s coworking community—an inspiring and unique place where work, family, and community flourish together.
