Tell  us  about  how  you  got  started? I  began  writing  songs  in  high  school,  then  became  more  and  more  into  it  after  I  graduated.  I  got  into  mu- sic  production  in  college,  which  brought  me  to  the  MSUM  Music  Program.  I  formed  a  group  â€œTnTâ€?  and  started  performing  a  lot  around  the  FM  Area. Being  a  rapper  from  Fargo,  how  did  you  make  your  way  to  the  main  stream? The  key  was  collaborating  with  every  related  artist  from  all  around  the  globe  and  staying  determined  throughout  the  process.  You  never  know  where someone  might  end  up.  Building  relationships  and  producing  quality  music Â

brought  me  to  LA,  where  I  am  now  nominated  for  an  LA  Music  Award.  People here  still  don’t  believe  I’m  from  Fargo.  Yeah!

C

D

Currently  what  are  you  working  on?  I’m  currently  working  on  an  Electro/Pop/Rock  al- bum  for  artist  Kris  Searle  called  â€œDawn  of  Momen- tumâ€?  which  has  earned  him  nominations  for  two  LA  Music  Awards  this  year.   Let’s  just  say  it’s  â€œGunna  be  Nutz!â€?  --  Grammys  here  we  come!

Tell  us  about  the  recent  award  you  won  in  LA? The  award  was  â€œBest  Dance/Electronica  Art- istâ€?  for  Kris  Searle.  I  had  produced  a  song  for  Kris  called  â€œWarning  Signsâ€?  ft.  Darnell,  which  won  the  award.  I  made  the  track  back  in  Moorhead  so  long  ago,  during  the  strip- per  pole  in  the  basement  phase,  and  never  thought  anything  would  come  of  it;Íž  I  guess  I  was  wrong!  This  proves  you  just  never  know  what  might  catch  people’s  attention.

“People here[LA] still don’t believe I’m from Fargo.

Are  you  working  with  anyone  we  would  recog- nize  in  the  hip  hop  com- munity?  While  completing  Kris  Searle’s  album,  a  lot  of  artists  like  Dance  to  Rap Â

F

wmcaoelDXZEIOfmwieonvfnpeojewnJKFNVOWNFJPOFMNWIQN

wmcaoelDXZEIOfm started  contacting  me  re- garding  production.  I’m  also  talking  to  FM  local,  Charlie  Mizza  to  collabo- rate  on  a  potential  track.  Who  knows  what  can  hap- pen after  this?

e

What  options  are  there  in  Fargo-Moorhead  for  aspiring  Hip-Hop artists/producers?  There  is  a  great  music  scene  in  Fargo.  The  hard  part  is  getting  your  mu- sic  recognized.   Another  crutch  is  that  there  are  only  a  few  places  in  the  FM  area  where  artists  can  perform  and  get  noticed.  For  performances  you  can  check  out:  The  Aquarium,  7KH +XE 7KH 1HVWRU %LJ D’s.  For  publicity:  Y94  .1'6 7KH +LJK Plains  Reader,  FM  Spot- light  and  The  Fargo  Forum, all  come  to  mind.  The  big- gest  thing  would  be  to  net- work,  network,  network.  The  more  people  you  know,  the  more  opportuni- ties  arise.  Just  remember  it’s  not  luck,  it’s  setting  yourself  up  for  opportunity. hat is “The Reason Why” some bands survive and thrive? It is not likely one thing, but many. In the case of Little Big Town, the reasons are plenty. They have sold over 1.5 million records and garnered 3 Grammy nominations, including The Road to Here’s nomination for album of the year. CMA and ACM nominations have arrived in abundance. Critical acclaim and end of year “best” lists have been copious. But this is a band with a history. A band that has DOZD\V SXW PXVLF ÀUVW« DQG WKDW is the biggest reason of all. FMS wanted to know the reason why, so we tracked down Phillip Sweet of LBT to give us the rundown.

Exclusive Interview With Phillip )06 Your band’s name pretty much explains Fargo North Dakota. Little Big Town. Tell us about how you came up with your name and what it means to you?

3+,//,3: We all grew up in

smaller towns across America and that name felt like a good representation of what we are all about. Plus Nashville is a “little big town,” it’s growing constantly but still has that small town feeling.

)06: What do you think of

Fargo when you hear your going to perform in this area?

3+,//,3: We have seen so

many towns across America with something in common with Fargo. The truth is, we love these places! We always receive the greatest hospitality with the people and love how genuine and real they are.

s there anyone better to tell it like it is than one’s kid? In January 2008, when Uncle Kracker began to write the songs that appear on his new album Happy Hour, it was his eight year-old daughter who suggested that he try writing something a little less downbeat than usual. “She said to me, ‘I can’t really dance to any of your songs,’” the father of three says with a laugh. “Not that I needed to make a

dance record, but it dawned on me that I tend to write a lot of acoustic ballads and midtempo type tunes. And I thought, ‘It’s pretty bad when your own kids won’t listen to your records. Your own kids!’ At the end of the day, people want to have fun more than they want to cry. I realized that it was time for something a little more upbeat and positive and that’s what I ended up with on Happy Hour.” Hidden Treasure

)06: You have been around for a long time now since the Kid Rock days in the 90’s. What is it like now compared to then? UK: Everything has changed! Tour used to be like camping with a tent, no electricity, and anything goes. Now tour is like camping, but I don’t have to pitch a tent and I check into a hotel room. I will say that I am the busiest I have ever been in my career, and it feels great. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Believe

me, I know what it’s like when the phone doesn’t ring. )06: What are your thoughts about coming to perform in Fargo? UK: I love experiencing new towns and new people. Expecially all the different accents. I like checking out the area and picking up different items that I haven’t seen in other parts. )06: What have you been doing recently in your free time when performing in these different cities?

UK: Honestly, I’ve been looking for some driving ranges. I just picked up this golf thing. It’s something I can work on when I am out on the road. )06: Wow, that’s the last thing I thought I would hear from Uncle Kracker (ha).

Don’t expect much, then you wont be disappointed. (Joking) I’m bringing a fun, upbeat, and exciting show. I don’t want the people to think I bring trouble or a rough crowd, because of my ties with Kid Rock. It’s not like
