GO THE PLAN
ASK THE EXPERTS
Love Always Events + Floral We asked Christy Schauer, owner and operator of Love Always Events + Floral, for her advice when it comes to where to start with wedding planning, design and floral aspects.
Q&A 1.
2.
3.
WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DO YOU OFFER AT LOVE ALWAYS EVENTS + FLORAL THAT ARE UNIQUE TO THE AREA?
WHAT'S THE BEST AND EASIEST WAY TO APPROACH A WEDDING PLANNER WITH YOUR IDEAS?
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON TRENDS IN WEDDING DESIGN THAT YOU'RE SEEING LATELY?
"Love Always Events + Floral is an artisan floral shop located in Fargo. It is our passion to create gorgeous wedding and event floral designa using the freshest blooms, unique vases and the utmost attention to detail. We have become obsessed with combining unexpected color pallets and organic textural elements that come together to create a one-of-a-kind floral piece, made specifically for your special occasion."
"If you have specific ideas in mind, bring them forward with your wedding planner right away. This will help the wedding planner get a feel of what’s most important to you. If most of your ideas include guest comfort, we know to focus on this area going forward and look for other options as well. Also, phone calls and pictures are always helpful. The more descriptive you can be, the better."
18 | MARCH 2016 | FARGO MONTHLY WEDDING GUIDE
"The latest wedding trends have been focused toward natural wooden textures, pastel colors and garden floral. The pastel color palette has been taking over the industry, including blush pinks, neutrals and lavenders. In 2016, get ready to see many bridal parties that are slightly mismatched to create a unique feel for each bridal party."
GO THE PLAN
4. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS OR TRICKS WHEN IT COMES TO STICKING TO A WEDDING BUDGET? 1. Comprehensive estimated budget: "This is my best advice. As you begin your engagement, develop a comprehensive budget itemized with estimates of each wedding cost. This way, if an unexpected cost occurs, you can review your budget and pull dollars from a different expense that might have come in under budget without having to stress about the added expense." 2. Think non-traditional: "When you are planning your wedding, realize there are no rules. If there are traditions that are not important to you and your family, there are no laws saying you must do these. A couple ideas include save-the-dates, party favors or wedding programs." 3. Design Focal Point: "Rather than trying to make the entire ballroom look like a dream, focus on two or three points where pictures will be taken to put your dollars toward. For example, instead of trying to make every guest table look fabulous, put more effort into your head table to make that look spectacular."
5. CAN YOU GIVE A LITTLE BIT OF ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO PICKING OUT THE RIGHT FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS?
Contact Christy Schauer Love Always Events + Floral lovealwaysfloral.com lovealways.eventdesign@gmail.com
"Follow your instinct. Your habits and how you live your life will tell you what type of floral options are the best fit. What colors are in your closet or in your house? What adjectives would you use to describe yourself? Follow these answers when deciding on what type of floral you like. Also, as you are looking for a florist, interview them, review their past work and see if they fit your style. Once they meet you and get to know you, I am confident each florist will stop at nothing to make sure you have stunning flowers to complement your wedding."

ASK THE EXPERTS
Zach Davis Photography
Zach Davis is no stranger to being behind the lens at weddings. That’s why we asked him for a bit of advice when it comes to finding the right wedding photographer.
Q&A 1.
2.
3.
WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS THAT YOU’RE NOTICING IN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY LATELY?
WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE LOOK FOR IN A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
“More than ever before, wedding photographers are finding new and creative ways to capture couples. Whether it’s using projectors, playing with light or shooting through objects, they’re being playful with the photographic process in a way that is pushing wedding photography forward creatively. At the same time, at its root, a wedding is two people celebrating their love with friends and family so I think it’s important to not get too caught up in trends.”
“Find someone that you connect with on a personal level. Naturally, it matters whether or not you love their photos, but weddings are incredibly intimate events so it’s important to find someone that you’ll want to share that with for a day.”
WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU THINK YOU SPECIALIZE IN THAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS? “There are plenty of techniques that I use, but it’s much more about building a genuine relationship with people. I try really hard to get to know couples and their stories; what makes them unique and awesome. I constantly strive to create authentic photos that reflect that. Your wedding photos shouldn’t look exactly like someone else’s.”

5.
WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE DISCUSS WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER DURING THE WEDDING PLANNING PROCESS?
ANY OTHER TIPS YOU’D LIKE TO ADD FOR SOMEONE BOOKING A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THEIR WEDDING?
“Make a smart schedule. I’ve learned how long you can expect everything to take, which doesn’t just include how long a portrait session will be, but also how much time it will take to drive between venues, eat dinner, round up family members, etc. A smart schedule directly translates into an enjoyable, more relaxed wedding day.”
“I’ve said it before, but get to know your photographer. Grab a beer with him or her. Hang out. Ask questions. The better you know each other, the better your photos will be.”

ASK THE EXPERTS
Exposure Productions If a photo is worth 1,000 words, how many is a video worth? We asked Alissa Norland, owner and operator of Exposure Productions, about the important things to know when it comes to wedding videography.
Q&A 1.
2.
WHEN SHOULD SOMEBODY START LOOKING FOR A VIDEOGRAPHER IN THE WEDDING PLANNING PROCESS?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HIRING A PROFESSIONAL VIDEOGRAPHER?
"According to major wedding planners, couples should consider and begin researching videography companies and book between eight to 10 months before the wedding. However, we have booked weddings as late as two weeks before the wedding, as they had realized videography was, in fact, an essential part of capturing the day."
“To have a wedding, much will go into the process. This will include the venues, flowers, food, attire and other material things to make the day perfect. There are investments in services such as photography and videography that are provided to document the day to relive days and years later. Unlike photography, videography captures moments as it happened in motion but also adds the dimension of sound. Imagine being able to go back to your
28 | MARCH 2016 | FARGO MONTHLY WEDDING GUIDE
wedding day and hear the vows spoken and speeches given or watch a father give away his daughter and the emotion a groom has when he sees his bride for the first time in her wedding dress. After the excitement has settled, memories will be the only source besides pictures to help you remember. But to have moments that are captured in movement with sound will help you relive the day all over again.”
GO THE VIDEOS
3. WHAT ARE SOME KEY THINGS SOMEONE SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A VIDEOGRAPHER? "The budget, for any couple, is always the first to be considered. Unfortunately, many brides all too often look only at the money rather than the character or quality of the videographer. If your videographer is at the top or over your budget, consider it a lifelong investment, an invaluable service capturing memories that you can watch years down the road. Your wedding videographer or filmmaker should be able to show strong communication. "As videographers, we get to know our couples because we find it important to know them so that we are able to produce a film completely unique in their lives together. Your videographer also should have experience in filming weddings. Ask if your videographer has any references or check online to read reviews from other brides and their experiences and check their samples of previous work. Lastly, your videographer should be able to have the adequate equipment to capture your wedding professionally. This includes stabilization, audio, cameras and filmmakers."
4. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRENDS IN WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY RIGHT NOW? ARE PEOPLE GOING MORE TOWARD HIGHLIGHT VIDEOS OR THE ENTIRE EVENT?
Contact Exposure Productions Exposure Productions fmexposure.com 701-540-3236 fmexposure@gmail.com
"There are definitely different styles and approaches. You may have a wedding videographer who documents or journalizes the wedding experience, while others like to get in real close and create cinematic pieces of work that may ignore some of the conventional strategies of capturing every moment of the wedding. There are pieces such as the documentary edits, which include events filmed in their entirety and feature film edits that highlight the entire day to create a unique story. Much like films you watch in the movies, we also produce trailers to feature films, a unique glimpse of the entire day composed of two to four minutes of music. So, the trends in today's videography takes on a new cinematic approach far different than we saw even 10 years ago."

GO THE FLOWERS
Prairie Petals Carrie Brusven (left), owner of Rustic Trunk Event Design & Rentals, and Kimberly Hess, owner of Prairie Petals, have merged their businesses together to form the ultimate design company for weddings, events and more. After working together for so many years, the pair has finally decided to team up to create an all-in-one design destination for their clients, so we asked them for a few tips.
ASK THE EXPERTS
3.
Q&A 1.
2.
WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS THAT YOU'RE NOTICING WITH FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS AND OVERALL WEDDING DESIGN LATELY?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A FLORIST PRESENT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY?
"We see a trend toward looser, more organic flowers that are more representative of nature – less traditional and more organic. As far as wedding designs go, in general, we are seeing a greater movement toward incorporating personal touches that indicate what this person's style is, as well as untraditional venues and untraditional styles of gatherings. People are feeling less boxed in by the ‘rules’ of what a wedding is ‘supposed’ to be."
"Flowers are sometimes fragile and are something that need to be taken care of. If the florist is present throughout the day, the flowers would be properly cared for and maintained in their best possible condition. If for some reason the bride's plans change, the florist would be there to help adapt to that."
WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW WHEN PICKING OUT FLOWERS FOR A WEDDING? “We would say the most important thing is to choose flowers that you know are going to make it through the day – flowers that have the best chance to be in great condition. You have the option to design with all kinds of things, so choose flowers that will have the highest quality when you’re going to use them, and have confidence in your florist to make the best alternate choice when they need to. Also, consider the fact that it is the picture of the bride and groom and her bouquet that will be the lasting memory of what her flowers were. Imagine what the photo will look like on your mantle. The years will come and go, so don’t pick according to what the fad is at the time, but according to what is representative of who you really are and what you really like.” 31
GO THE FLOWERS
4. WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DOES PRAIRIE PETALS OFFER FOR FLORAL AND RENTALS THAT'S UNIQUE TO THE AREA? “We have created a unique interview process to help us fully understand what our bride’s style is and then create designs for her specific style. We spend roughly two hours with each bride in that first interview and they often leave saying that we were able to put into words and design exactly what they wanted but could not put into words themselves. “The use of our entire selection of glassware is at no charge. We also offer the service of delivery, setup and pickup after the event. We will even bring your flowers back to the shop and keep them for you to pick them up on the Monday or Tuesday following the event, if you would like. Every bouquet arrangement and design is created for that bride specifically and individually based on the initial interview. We have no patterns that we follow, therefore, each arrangement is unique. We are able to accommodate the modern, the rustic, the vintage and the artful. Also, we were the first to bring a large inventory of unique, vintage and rustic rental items to the Fargo area, which, we are delighted to say, is expanding daily. We are continuing to grow and cultivate our collection to include décor to accommodate many different styles.”
5. ANY OTHER TIPS FOR WEDDING PLANNING THAT YOU'D LIKE TO ADD? “We encourage brides to include only what is meaningful and purposeful in their plans for their wedding day. Find a florist and designer who grasp who it is they really are and what their personal style is and is able to create something around that speficially, not according to their own style. Ask around and get recommendations from your friends. Do not think that a higher price tag is indicative of a professional’s quality or value.”

GO THE DINING
ASK THE EXPERTS VIP Room Gordy Richardson is the owner of the VIP Room located in the lower level of 624 Main Ave, Fargo. He said it is a very common spot for rehearsal dinners because a bride and groom can rent out the whole restaurant for only $60.
For the last 22 years, Gordy Richardson has been making weddings delicious. As the owner of the VIP Room in Downtown Fargo, Richardson estimates that he has catered more than 100 weddings. With so much experience under his belt, Richardson has plenty of knowledge when it comes to catering and we picked his brain.
Q&A 1.
2.
HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND THE BRIDE AND GROOM GO ABOUT BUDGETING?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PLATED MEAL VERSUS A BUFFET? IS THERE A DIFFERENCE PRICEWISE?
“The way we approach this is we’re, from the customer’s point of view, trying to get as much information. Deciding what they’re comfortable with is the main thing. You can pretty much find that out relatively fast. They’ll usually let you know right away that they want this to be elegant or they want this to be simple or they want it to be a casual affair or they want paper plates or they want full china with goblets and wine glasses.”
34 | MARCH 2016 | FARGO MONTHLY WEDDING GUIDE
“We tend to like to do buffet-style receptions unless it’s a smaller wedding. If it’s a wedding that is only going to be between 50 and a hundred people, then a plated meal can be a nice way to go. I like to encourage people that are having larger receptions to have buffet style. It makes things flow easily and it actually is going to reduce the cost of the final bill if they go buffet versus plated. The reason being that you don’t have to have as many servers to have a buffet.”
3. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS A COUPLE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO ANSWER WHEN THEY TALK TO THEIR CATERER? “The most important question is always the date. The estimated number of people is a thing that we try to get right off the bat. Whether or not they are thinking of doing plated or buffet. Or, have they chosen the venue and, if so, where.”
4. WHAT ARE SOME OTHER THINGS YOU THINK A BRIDE AND GROOM SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? “The main thing that I would want them to know about is to get as much information in advance about the total cost. See if there are any fees or charges that you may not be aware of because different places have different charges. They have delivery, they have set up charges, they have bartender charges, they have service charges and this and that. You’re not always going to be able to get 100 percent, especially if there’s liquor or wine and beer involved because you won’t know how much is consumed until after but at least you’ll have an idea about what the basic charges will be.”
