The end of another year fast approaches, everyone is hanging out for those days or weeks off we have over the Christmas and New Year period, the rush is on to get all those end of year jobs done, and here at FOCUS we are wrapping up another years worth of local and free publcaitions. December marks FOCUS magazines 19th anniversary. 19 years of local people, local businesses, events, festivals, stories, interviews... granted we had a little 4 month hibernation due the C word but in that time we produced a mobi mag so that still counts

Make sure you support these businesses this holiday/ shopping season. A friend of mine recenlty made this comment which I think is absolute gold; “Convience kills community” so don’t just order online, although it’s quick and easy, get out and support these businesses and our local economy... and last but not least as said in Clement Clarke Moore’s poem The Night Before Christmas; A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight.

Alex Glen Hmes
With over 15 years of real estate experience and a house hold name in our business community, Alex Glen Holmes is now in her third year as president of Business PMQ. Supporting groups such as Westpac Helicopter, Hastings Education Fund, Luminosity, Nautilus School & Charles Sturt University, Alex is truely community FOCUSED.
Hello Alex, Can you tell us about yourself and your connection here in Port Macquarie?
I moved to Port Macquarie in December 1988 to be closer to family. My uncle owned the Aquatic Caravan Park Motel & the Marine Motel and my dad was rebuilding and modernising it for him while managing the caravan park. I started work at the then Cray’s restaurant where I met my husband, a lifelong local, through work mates. I spent many years working in medical practices then Real Estate and for the past six years training Real Estate agents. In 1989 my husband and I also started T & A Mechanical repairs which expanded to include Hastings Auto Wreckers and Port Macquarie Tilt Tray Towing, so I have been in business in Port Macquarie for over 36 years. Raising 4 children in the area and being very involved in everything from preschool & school committees to sporting groups, dance and drama, etc has really cemented my connection with the area. Now with 7 children we are ensuring the future generation and making sure that we leave them a good local legacy to carry on with.
You are the President of Business PMQ, what inspired you to get involved and then take on the president role?
I am of the strong belief that when business people work together and collaborate that ideas flow, we support each other & businesses become stronger. When a business does well the whole community benefits. There is then more support for jobs, sponsorship of sporting & recreational groups and other organisations. There is more than just being on a board though, it is also about really getting involved. Over the 12 years I have been on the board I have held positions of Vice President, Treasurer & am now into my third year as President. I love being very hands on and involved with working with schools, as this is where our future work force are. Also supporting groups such as Westpac Helicopter, Hastings Education Fund, Luminosity, Nautilus
School & Charles Sturt University to support the wider community as well.
What do you love the most about our region and community?
When a business does well the whole community benefits. There is then more support for jobs, sponsorship of sporting & recreational groups and other organisations.
I love that you can walk down the main street and people smile and say hello whether they know you or not. I love the sense of community and support that we afford each other, which we have seen especially in times of disaster, but also when someone needs help. I love that we can all work together to achieve common goals. In the city you can feel faceless but here you can walk into a shopping centre or down the street and always run into someone you know. I think that we live in the best place in the world. Even when you go away on holidays you find yourself comparing the views & beaches and ours are pretty spectacular. I love the endless opportunities that our area has to offer, both in business and growth potential, to the great
At Business
areas we have for recreation. From rivers to hinterland all on our doorstep that’s pretty special. But most of all I love the people and the lifestyle that make up this great community and that we have so many passionate people that want to work together to improve our way of life.
Port Macquarie we bring in speakers and courses to make it easier and more affordable without a lot of time away from your business.
What do you believe are the most important aspects of Business Port Macquarie's mission in supporting local businesses?
Our vision is “A sustainable, profitable and vibrant business environment”. Being able to support and advocate for Businesses and their needs. We are often the first place our members come to when they have an issue. We listen and work out who we can connect them with to assist with their need. We help bring business together with a common goal and lobby all levels of government to let them know the needs of the business community. As one voice it is hard to effect change but when we join together with a common goal small business becomes the biggest voice and more can be achieved and brought to the notice of the correct agencies. Connection is also very important. We you are in business you can, at times, feel alone. This was especially true during covid. By being part of Business Port Macquarie you have opportunity to mix and meet with others. You aren’t
feeling as alone knowing others, at times, have the same challenges. It is also a place to form fantastic business relationships where different businesses can form strategic alliances to help each other grow. It is also a place that we can come together with great business minds from a variety of backgrounds and make plans for what we see as the future needs of the area, which we can then collaborate with all levels of government to obtain grants to help fill those needs and shortfalls. If you are a small business it can be hard to access education and training to help you grow and improve. At Business Port Macquarie we bring in speakers and courses to make it easier and more affordable without a lot of time away from your business.
How has Business Port Macquarie evolved over the years, and what are some key initiatives that have helped foster growth in the local economy?
We have tried to encourage business people with a range of skill to take up positions on our board. This ensures we’re relatable and have an understanding of many different businesses and occupations. We then sit down as a board and have a set of strategic principles to meet the needs of our members. These include 1. Facilitating opportunities for education and growth by fostering networking, collaboration
and innovation.
2. Advocacy & representing the interests of the business community across all government, community and stakeholder groups.
3. Ensuring a strong and relevant member organisation through good governance and an attractive value proposition.
4. Leadership & inspire the business community to adopt a triple bottom line philosophy. That is leadership in People, Planet and Profit.
After listening to feedback from our member base we have recently expanded our membership offering so that we can tailor and further address the changing face of business and move with the times. Also working not only with our current business community leaders, but also identifying our future leaders and offering support and possible mentorship to help with their development.
We have been successful in bringing the Australian Institute of Company Directors course to Port Macquarie. Normally to attend this course you would need to travel to Sydney for a week which adds extra costs of travel, accommodation, etc. We had a cohort of 15 business people attend our last course and it was very well received. We are currently working with the AICD to bring the course back in 2025 and are currently accepting expressions of interest for these that would like to take part or receive further information. This course is another avenue to help upskill our business community.

What makes Port Macquarie’s business environment unique compared to other regions in New South Wales?
Port Macquarie is very focused on Economic Development. We are fortunate to have a very vibrant networking offering in our Local Government area to suit all businesses from micro business to large companies. These network and professional groups all come together on a bimonthly basis with representatives from Council Economic Development Group to work on how we can better service current businesses and also bring new business to our area. With our location, halfway between Sydney & the Gold Coast, easy access to the highway, new business park opportunities and having opportunities with CSU & UNSW, we have so much to offer. Adding our fantastic lifestyle to this is what makes our region an interesting destination for large business to consider. We hope to encourage a range of manufacturing to the area which again increases job opportunities. What is even more special about these network groups is that their boards are all run by passionate volunteers who are all business people.
Business PMQ proudly organise the New Years Eve fireworks for our community. Tell us how it all came
about and those who help you put them on each year.
I always thought that NYE around midnight was a bit sad in Port Macquarie. Many people around but nothing happening. Not a great look for our town to tourists plus locals deserved better. I took this thought to our board and they agreed that we needed to do something about it, so midnight fireworks were born!
A few years later the carnival stopped doing the 9pm family fireworks and council took the payment for this and we were able to organise Humphrey from All Occasions Pyrotechnic to do both shows. After Covid, council had decided that this was not the best use of funds. Business Port Macquarie decided that 9pm family fireworks was something that was really important, so we picked up both shows. This meant that we then had to find double the previous amount of sponsorship to make sure that we could deliver this to the community. None of this would be possible without our amazing business community who have
The looks of wonder and awe in the eyes of children and adults alike make this such a worthwhile important event.
again gotten behind us so that we are able to deliver this really important community event. I personally book a table on Port Adventure Cruises each year to get the best views of the fireworks. To see the number of people and families that gather for the event is amazing. Many people have told me how they have met and bonded with many other locals and visitors through this event. The looks of wonder and awe in the eyes of children and adults alike make this such a worthwhile important event. But none of this would be possible without our amazing sponsors. This year our Platinum sponsor is again Eire Constructions. Our other event sponsors Westport Club, Sails Resort, Rydges, Beachhouse, Mid Pacific Motel & our TV sponsor WIN/NBN TV. We were also fortunate to apply for and receive a community grant from Hastings Council which made up the shortfall. Please remember and support these businesses where you can. Thank you doesn’t seem enough for what they have helped provide.
What do you think the New Year’s fireworks symbolises for the local community?
The greatest joy that I receive is watching and being a small part of others achieving, growing and working towards their potential and goals.
It symbolises celebrating community. It’s about what we can achieve when we all join together. I think it is also a symbol of hope, joy and excitement for the year ahead and new beginnings. Can we expect any exciting changes or new additions to the New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration?
All Occasions Pyrotechnics always put on a great show with plenty of bang and fanfare. It would be great if, in the future, another group looked at the possibility of entertainment on the Town Green, there are plenty of opportunities that could grow from this.
Are there any major changes or new initiatives coming in 2025 that will shape the future of the business community in Port Macquarie?
We are always looking at ways to improve and offer more to our members. Keep an eye out for the Business Awards launch on the 11th February at the new Rocksalt and then a huge night with many incredible surprises
is promised for the Business Awards on the 17th May 2025. This event will be next level and not to be missed. We are also looking at bringing the Australian Institute of Company Directors course back to the region just to mention a few. You can always check out our website for what’s new and coming up by going to www.businessportmacquarie.com.au
How does Business Port Macquarie plan to foster more collaboration between local businesses in the coming years?
By working with businesses to plan for and help them meet their future needs. We’re currently in planning for our events from February to July so keep an eye on our website. 21st January we will kick off the new year with a meet and greet cocktail party. For those that prefer a quieter more intimate gathering, don’t miss our monthly coffee catch up on the first Wednesday of each month. We have quite a few new initiatives coming up including some “Come check out our business” opportunities where we go to visit and tour some businesses. The excitement is brewing with Malcolm & Kylie
in our office putting the final touches to these new initiatives.
What have been the highlights for you in 2024 and what are you looking forward to in 2025?
Business Port Macquarie being a finalist in the recent Business NSW State Business Awards was a thrill but being able to take 8 local finalists with us was amazing. To have two of those Businesses, Port Macquarie Performing Arts & Port Medical Aesthetics Clinic to come away as winners in their categories was a great highlight. The greatest joy that I receive is watching and being a small part of others achieving, growing and working towards their potential and goals. I am fortunate that I get to be a part of this through my training business but also through Business Port Macquarie.
In 2025 I am excited about being open to new opportunities that present themselves throughout the year. Further growth for Business Port Macquarie, servicing our business community and working with all levels of government to make the Hastings a vibrant business area where we support each other, tackle challenges, offer great customer service and grow together.
Thanks Alex.
Wild Koala Breeding: A Critical Step for Endangered Koalas
Koala Conservation’s Wild Breeding Program and Visitor Centre is set to be the world's first wild koala breeding facility.
This is a groundbreaking effort by Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) to prevent the extinction of koalas, which is estimated could happen by as early as 2050 in New South Wales, ACT and Queensland without drastic and critical action. With the launch of the new site at Guulabaa – Place of Koala in the Cowarra State Forest in mid-December, the new centre combines conservation with education, offering visitors an immersive experience while supporting a sustainable future for wild koalas.
The Journey to Wild Koala Breeding
Koala Conservation Australia’s (KCA’s) efforts began over 50 years ago with the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, Australia’s first dedicated koala rehabilitation centre. As habitat loss and climate change escalated, KCA’s role expanded to include large-scale habitat restoration and a food tree plantation initiative. After the devastating 2019-2020 bushfires, which decimated koala populations, KCA received over $7.9 million in GoFundMe donations, enabling the rapid development of the Wild Koala Conservation Breeding Program.
Visitor Experience
The Koala Conservation Wild Breeding Visitor Centre has been built with sustainable local materials. Visitors can observe koalas, learn about their habitat, and witness conservation efforts firsthand.
Koala Conservation Australia’s Wild Breeding Program is a unique conservation model, blending innovation, education, and community engagement to ensure a future for wild koalas.
Wild Koala Conservation Breeding Program
Traditional captive breeding fails to prepare koalas for the wild due to limited genetic diversity and adaptation. KCA’s Wild Breeding Program, however, breeds koalas in a near-wild habitat, with selected founders screened for genetic health to build a robust population for eventual release. Partnering with Taronga Conservation Society, KCA carefully screened and introduced a population of breeding koalas, as the program’s first founders in 2024, laying the foundation for the species’ recovery.
At the Wild Breeding Centre you will be able to:
• Spot koalas from the viewing deck
• Immerse yourself in an interactive, educational koala experience
• Learn about the world-first Wild Koala Conservation Program
• Browse the gift shop for locally made, artisan wares and art
• View the new exhibition by Australian Wildlife Photographer Brooke Maxwell – “Wild Reflections – Natures Edge”
• Enjoy the incredible surrounding options on offer at Guulabaa –Place of Koala

Sovvy Sparkle
e Sovvy Sparkle Christmas Lights competition and Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run have become a highly anticipated and much loved tradition in Sovereign Hills each holiday season. We spoke to one of the organisers Meg Tubman about what we can expect from this year’s festivities!
Hi Meg. The Sovvy Sparkle Christmas Lights Competition is on again this year in Sovereign Hills! Can you tell us how the competition began and what makes it special for the community?
The Sovvy Sparkle Christmas Lights Competition started as a way to bring the community together and spread some holiday cheer. It was created to encourage residents to get creative and decorate their homes, while fostering a sense of community spirit. Over the years, it has become a beloved tradition in Sovereign Hills, with participants
excited to show off their festive displays and create a magical atmosphere for all to enjoy.
Homeowners can enter the competition by registering by December 8 through this link bit. ly/48S1Rz1. It’s simple to sign up, and once registered, you’ll be eligible for judging on December 12.
What can residents and visitors expect to see in this year’s Christmas lights displays? Any exciting themes or standout decorations?
This year, residents and visitors can expect even bigger and brighter displays as we celebrate our 7th year! Participants often bring unique and creative themes to their light displays, so it is exciting to see new ideas from animations to inflatables and
everything in between. We encourage people to think outside the box and add their personal touch to make this year's displays truly special. How can homeowners enter the Christmas Lights Competition, and what do you look for in a winning display?
Homeowners can enter the competition by registering by December 8 through this link bit.ly/48S1Rz1. It's simple to sign up, and once registered, you’ll be eligible for judging on December 12. As for what we look for in a winning display, we’re interested in creativity, effort and how well the display enhances the overall festive spirit of the community.
Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run is another
Christmas event that you guys run, and it sounds like a lot of fun! Can you tell us more about what’s planned for this year?
Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run is a highlight of the holiday season in Sovereign Hills! This year, Santa will be visiting multiple stops in the neighbourhood in his big red firetruck, spreading festive cheer and handing out lollies to all the kids.
Santa Stops:
4.05pm Sovereign Place Town Centre
4.40pm College Rise 'Joeys Meadow'
5.05pm Barton Ridge (Cnr Capital Drive & Chifley Street)
5.30pm Stirling Green Parkland
in their own neighbourhood. What’s been the community response to these holiday events over the years? How have they brought neighbours together?
Over the years, the Christmas lights competition and Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run have become integral parts of the holiday season in Sovereign Hills.
How did the Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run come to be, and what’s the goal behind bringing this festive event to the neighbourhood?
The idea came from wanting to create an interactive and festive experience that families and children could enjoy. The goal is to spread holiday cheer, encourage people to get outside, enjoy the festive atmosphere and give families a chance to celebrate together
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive! Over the years, the Christmas lights competition and Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run have become integral parts of the holiday season in Sovereign Hills. It’s also been a wonderful way for newcomers to feel welcomed and included in the community. People look forward to these events as a chance to connect, celebrate and create memories with friends and family.
Are there prizes for Sovvy Sparkle, and if so, what are they?
Yes! This year, the prizes include: Best Home: $800 gift voucher
People's Choice Winner: $500 gift voucher Runner-Up: $200 gift voucher
The Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run and the Sovvy Sparkle Christmas lights competition
involves a lot of organisation. Who helps make it happen, and how can we support it?
The Santa’s Jolly Lolly Run is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Lake Innes Fire Brigade. They take Santa around the neighbourhood on their fire truck, spreading festive cheer to all the kids (and adults!) along the way. Their involvement is key to making this event such a memorable part of the holiday season.
Where can we find out more or stay up to date on this year's events?
To stay up to date on all the details for this year’s events, you can check out our social media channels – Instagram @sovereignhillsportmacquarie and Facebook @Sovereign Hills Port Macquarie. A free and safe meeting, social and recreational place for the local community and visitors, enhancing the sense of well-being, health, wellness and longevity.
Existing ocean pools are among the most loved and cherished community facilities. We have the opportunity to provide these same community benefits but improve on the design and functionality of the pool to make it more accessible, easier to maintain and minimise environmental impacts.
Port Macquarie Hastings Council Support
In July 2023, Council voted ‘in principle’ to provide support for the purposes of the preparation of a planning proposal that would permit lodgement of a development application for a tidal/ocean pool.
This ‘in principle’ support does not extend to consideration or commitment of funding or financial support for the project or future ownership, management, operational or maintenance arrangements
Who will be the pool users?
Estimates put the pool usage around 100,000 per year, including older people, families with younger children (who don’t enjoy rough surf), service providers (schools, health care, disability support) and community groups (surf live saving clubs, other sporting and recreational clubs). It is likely that the pool will also be a major drawcard with visitors.
Economic benefits
One estimate of the plausible economic benefit is $1.4 million per annum and a conceivable health benefit of $2.6 million per annum, making a total economic benefit of $4 million and a valuable contributor to the Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA.
The Cost?
An accurate estimate can’t be provided until the design and engineering plans are finalised and approvals received from Council and tenders received. An indicative estimate is approx. $11 million, however, Port Macquarie residents and Council will not be required to pay for the construction costs as this will come from the Federal Government assisted by Pat Conaghan.
The annual maintenance cost is estimated at $220,000 per annum or approximately only $3 per person! This cost may be reduced with some corporate support and volunteers.
19,000 petition signatures
Yes, the public are very supportive of the pool and can’t wait. Main reasons are that the pool will not need to be funded by our Council – so it’s like a gift. Better still, the pool will be free to use and offer easy access for everyone, including people with disabilities.
Visit our website at portmacquarieoceanpool. org.au and sign up to receive our newsletter or volunteer to help with some maintenance once the pool is completed. We would love to have over 1,000 volunteers by the time the pool is built!
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
MONTH ,
Kyle Rathbone started his Graphic Design journey right here at Focus Magazine many moons ago and it’s a privilege having him as part of our team! Kyle has worked on many design projects both locally and across Australia, his creative spark and passion for comprehensive client consultation make him the perfect person for bringing a brand’s aesthetic to life.
i Kyle. Can you tell us a bit about your journey into graphic design and digital art?
My graphic design journey began right here at this very magazine. While studying at Newman Technical College, I had the opportunity to do work experience at Focus Magazine. When one of the designers left, a position opened up, and I didn’t hesitate and jumped at the opportunity. I had always been passionate about design and was familiar with a few programs, but it was working alongside a talented team of designers that truly allowed me to grow and learn the craft on the job.
I had always been passionate about design and was familiar with a few programs, but it was working alongside a talented team of designers that truly allowed me to grow and learn the cra on the job.
How would you describe your artistic style, and the kind of work you usually do? I’m not sure I have a single, defined, design style, as every project is unique. I see this as an advantage because it allows me to create tailored work for clients across a variety of industries,
meeting diverse needs. My work at Focus Magazine primarily involves designing advertisements and handling client revisions. Outside of that, I’m particularly passionate about branding projects, though I don’t limit myself to just that. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, including printed materials, corporate presentations and reports, large-format printing such as banners and signage, packaging, social media designs for platforms like Facebook and Instagram, web assets and more.
Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you take an idea from concept to finished piece? When it comes to branding, the process is what I enjoy most. The initial meeting with a client to discuss their exciting new venture is always a highlight for me. I know how much planning and thought goes into starting a business, and it’s inspiring to hear someone’s vision for their brand. It’s in these conversations that my creativity really starts to flow.
From there, the process can vary. Sometimes ideas come to me right away, but other times there’s a bit of trial and error as I work to bring my concepts to life. Regardless, we always find the right direction in the end!
I like to present 3-4 design options that align with the client’s brief, as I believe it’s important for them to have choices and feel confident in their decision. Ultimately, I want the client to be 100% satisfied with the final result.
The final stage of a branding project is just as exciting as the beginning—seeing the brand come to life! Whether it’s on social media or displayed on workplace signage, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing my work out in the world. It’s always a proud moment when the client is happy with the outcome, and I know I’ve exceeded their expectations.
While I make a conscious effort to stay current with trends, I also aim to bring my own touch to each project, ensuring that my designs remain fresh and unique
Where do you typically find inspiration for your work? Are there any specific artists, movements, or sources you turn to? Pinterest is one of my go-to sources for inspiration—there’s such a vast amount of content out there, and it’s a fantastic visual tool for translating ideas onto a screen or page. I love researching and curating mood boards to help shape the vision for my projects.
When it comes to drawing inspiration from artists, I think one of the biggest benefits of the social media age is the easy access to a wide range of design studios, freelancers, and artists. It’s incredible how much talent is just a click away, allowing me to draw from a diverse pool of styles and ideas to fuel my own creative process.
How has your style or approach evolved over time? I think my style has evolved, but not as much as the design trends themselves. Over time, design trends have shifted dramatically—and, in my opinion, for the better. I’ve always gravitated towards clean, uncomplicated designs that are easy to digest and visually appealing, without trying
to convey too many messages at once. I focus on simplicity and clarity. While I make a conscious effort to stay current with trends, I also aim to bring my own touch to each project, ensuring that my designs remain fresh and unique.
How do you balance creative freedom with clients’ needs when working on commissioned projects? This is what makes being a designer so fascinating—you’re constantly working with different people, each with their own objectives and visions. Sometimes, you have clients who are very clear and direct about what they want, providing specific ideas for how their brand should be visually represented. At the other end of the spectrum, you might work with someone who isn’t sure where to start or what they want to see.
Personally, I don’t have a preference between the two. Both types of clients offer unique challenges and opportunities. Ultimately, I value the client’s perspective and always strive to ensure that the final design reflects their business in a way that they’re proud to present
to the world. It’s about understanding their vision and helping them bring it to life in a way that feels authentic and impactful.
What have been some of your most memorable projects to date, and why?
I’ve been fortunate to have worked as a designer for over 13 years, so it’s hard to pick just one standout project. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with clients from all over Australia—and even some overseas—but there’s something particularly special about being involved in local projects.
One recent project I’m especially proud of is the rebrand for Lord Street and Flynns Beach Pharmacy. It’s a bit nostalgic for me because I’ve been driving past that pharmacy since I first moved to Port Macquarie 20 years ago. Now, seeing my design work on their exterior signage feels pretty amazing.
Another project I’m really proud to have been part of is Hello Koalas. It is a fantastic local initiative that I worked on alongside Margaret Meagher for several years, right from the initial launch. I was involved in designing trail guides, merchandise, and advertising for the project. Seeing the joy on kids’ faces as they explored the giant koala sculptures—each designed by incredibly talented artists—was so rewarding.
It’s a project I’m truly chuffed about!
Are there any upcoming projects or new directions in your work that you’re particularly excited about?
Right now, I’m working on the brand design and marketing assets for a largescale development project in Cronulla called Kynara, alongside a long-term client of mine. It’s been an exciting project with a lot of moving parts, and I’m involved in helping pull many different elements together.
One of the highlights of this project is the opportunity to collaborate with my stepmother, Sharon, who is an exceptional copywriter specialising in real estate writeups. It’s incredibly rewarding to see two local businesses join forces on something of this scale, and I’m excited to be a part of it!
Where can people view more of your work and stay updated on your latest projects?
We’re in the process of putting together a website, but in the meantime, you can check out my work on Instagram at @twominds.brand. If you’d like to chat about your next project, feel free to reach out to me anytime at 0481 251 477
I’d love to hear from you!

Welcome to the Forest of Flickering Lights! Get set to step into an interactive and fun, forest and artmaking experience at the Glasshouse Gallery.
Designed for 6-12 year olds, this immersive workshop has been designed to spark the creative imaginations of children. The forest is home to as many insects and creatures as there are stars in the sky. The local insects and creatures that call the forest home, gather every thousand years for the Festival of Flickering Lights. All of the whimsical creatures, big and small, work together to create their favourite costumes and decorations to celebrate their magical home at the biggest party in the forest.
This immersive workshop invites the participants to create unique and fantastical decorations and outfits for the Festival of Flickering Lights. Local artists, Brad Collins, Chris Proctor and Anne De Nooijer will facilitate this interactive experience and assist everyone in creating expressive, quirky and funky outfits and decorations.
Anne De Nooijer (Studio Frannie) is a multidisciplinary fibre artist with her practice primarily focusing on hand-dyed, sewn and woven contemporary artworks. Hi Anne, can you tell us a little about your interest in this field of art?
I was introduced to fibres and textiles when I
was little. My mum is very creative and was always making things around the house and encouraged my sister and I to join, which I sometimes did, but I was more interested in building huts and fires back then. It wasn’t until my mid twenties when I discovered a real interest in textiles. I got my first sewing machine and everything got out of hand from there on.
What do you hope the Forest of Flickering Lights experience will offer the children attending?
Chris, Brad and I find it very important to have sustainable practices. We try to recycle and reuse as much as we can in our practices. In the Forest of Flickering Lights we will predominantly work with reclaimed materials and show the kids, as well as their parents, of the possibilities when working with minimal tools and second hand sourced materials. As children have such free and open minds, we’ll be encouraging them to use their creativity and our sourced materials to create something funky and unique together. What is on the horizon for you creatively in 2025?
I have my first solo exhibition booked for March 2025 at Home at Roto House, which is super exciting and a little intimidating at the same
time. I’ll definitely be focusing on this exhibition for the first chunk of the year. Along with my solo exhibition, I was also accepted in a Mentorship program facilitated by Newcastle Art Space. The Mentorship also includes a showcase group exhibition in Newcastle, with all of the artists selected for the program.
Brad M Collins is a local multidisciplinary artist and illustrator with an interest in brightly illustrated characters existing in surreal or semi-psychedelic worlds, as well as contemplative portraits using more traditional oil painting methods. Hi Brad, please tell us a little about your development as an artist?
I always had a huge love of cartoons, which definitely influenced me to create my own characters when I started making art around 6-7 years ago. Aside from a few poorly painted canvases, I started mostly creating animal characters to make my own merchandise. I’m obsessed with stickers! After a couple of years drawing weird animal characters, I began dabbling in painting traditional style portraits, just as gifts for friends and family.
Now that I was working in two distinct styles, I felt I had to pick one route to avoid confusing any type of audience that I was hoping to find.
One day I was given the advice “Why not both? Combine them!” and my mind was blown open. It had never crossed my mind that it would be a possibility, and now it’s all I do. Your talent is extraordinary and your works are highly visual, almost questioning the status quo in a comical way. What do you hope an audience takes away or appreciates in viewing your art form?
Thanks! When combining my two contrasting styles, I hope to express the weirdness that lies beneath the surface of how we all portray and think of ourselves. I’m sure even the most serious people and subjects have an interesting way of seeing the world, or being understood. I’d love for people to have their guard pulled down by the light hearted nature of the works. I think the bright colours, humour and surreal aspects of the works can be a great trojan horse, leading you to discover something within yourself or someone else.
As an artist, how do you plan to inspire children attending a Forest of Flickering Lights workshop?
In our workshops, we want to create a vibrant and welcoming environment that will invite the kids to express themselves as freely as possible. Anne, Chris and I truly believe in creating art that authentically expresses whatever is going on inside yourself. We all work as artists and constantly push ourselves to create honest work, no matter how strange it may become. So, by leading by example and creating a scene that strives to be as weird and wonderful as a child's imagination, we hope to open the floodgates of creativity and let the participants conjure up all the fun and wild ideas they may have.
Chris Proctor is a contemporary painter, originally from the UK. He has an ‘ugly is beautiful’ approach to art and is always trying to reuse found materials to create meaningful work. Hi Chris, what does art mean to you?
I think art is such an important part of the human experience and is often overlooked by people because they’re put off by preconceived notions of what art is. I use my painting and drawing practice as a way to understand my emotions, it’s often essentially a meditative process for me. I’m just lucky other people seem to like the outcome!
What have been some of your creative highlights to date throughout your career?
I really only started taking my art seriously around a year and a half ago but in that time I’ve had pieces in group shows in South Korea and Thailand and sold paintings to collectors in America, Germany, Peru, England, Italy and Australia! It’s an amazing feeling knowing you have little parts of you around the world. I’ve also loved using Instagram to show my work. I find it so fun to come up with little videos to promote myself and I’ve somehow managed to gain nearly 50,000 followers on the way and
millions of views - definitely not something I imagined when I first started painting in my living room!
What are you most looking forward to in being one of the facilitating artists at the Forest of Flickering Lights immersive experience?
I can’t wait to see what the kids come up with! I’ve got a rough idea of what the scene will look like at the end of each session but I’m totally ready to see something completely different! I love the sense of ‘anything is possible’ that kids have and it’s our job as the facilitating artists to figure out how we can make their thoughts a reality. I love problem solving, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how quickly I can come up with whatever weird idea I’m given! Thanks Guys.

Players
The Players Theatre has had a very busy and successful 2024 season!
We started the year with the iconic musical Fame, featuring a fantastic cast, vibrant lighting and a tight band leading to a great show. Next, we had Mother and Son, a stage version of the classic Aussie sitcom that left audiences laughing for more! Next up was Legally Blonde: The Musical, a vibrant and entertaining production that brought plenty of energy to the stage with a catchy score that stayed in our heads long after the bows. The laughs kept coming with Unnecessary Farce, a fast-paced comedy of errors set during a chaotic motel sting operation—complete with slamming doors and nonstop hilarity. We wrapped up the season in style with Showtime: Awesome Eighties, a rocking concert featuring
a live band and an extensive collection of classics from one of the best decades of music.
Clue: On Stage, is our debut production of 2025 and is directed by Paul Bishop. On a dark and stormy night, six unique guests, plus a butler and a maid, assemble for a dinner party at the home of Mr. Boddy. When their host turns up dead, it is clear that no one is safe! Our first musical of the season is Bonnie and Clyde, directed by Kate Simpson in her debut. In the midst of the country-wide depression real-life fugitives, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow find notoriety and love in this thrilling, fast-paced musical. We are hosting the One Act Play
Festival again in 2025. Theatre groups from around the state (and country!) come together to perform their plays within 60 minutes each, many of which have been written independently for the festival, so there’s always something new! The Fine Art of Deception, is directed by Guenter Bieniasch. A comedy thriller play about money, art and friendship. Our final production of 2025 is the classic musical Billy Elliot, directed by Wil Ferguson also in his debut. Billy Elliot is an inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. For more information about our shows visit www.playerstheatre.org.au

IT’S IN THE BAG CHARITY DRIVE
Bianca Moore is the owner of The Witchy Nook here in Port Macquarie. She is currently receiving donations at the shop for the It’s In The Bag charity drive. This charity accepts donations of essential items in a handbag to give out to women in a crisis situation.
i Bianca. Empowering women is clearly a core mission for you at The Witchy Nook. How does the It’s In The Bag drive align with these values?
Empowering women is central to everything we do, from the products we offer to the sense of community I am striving to create. This drive aligns with our mission by providing support to women in need, ensuring they have access to essential items that help them to feel respected, cared for and valued.
For me, this is more than just handing out essentials; it's about showing women that they are seen and supported, even during challenging times. Empowerment begins with care and compassion, and the “It’s in the Bag” drive reflects our commitment to uplifting women in a meaningful way.
At The Witchy Nook, we are deeply committed to fostering a sense of empowerment, and this campaign aligns perfectly with our values. Having the opportunity to contribute to the “It's in the Bag” campaign, we aim to uplift women,
letting them know they are not alone and that their community stands behind them.
Can you tell us more about the It’s In The Bag campaign and how it supports women in crisis situations?
The “It's in the Bag” campaign is a powerful initiative aimed at supporting women facing crisis situations, such as homelessness or domestic violence. This campaign helps to provide essential hygiene items, toiletries and personal care products in handbags that are donated and filled with love and care. For women in crisis, having access to these
The Witchy Nook can be a force for positive change. I've always wanted my business to be more than just a shop; it's a space where people feel seen, supported and uplifted. This campaign alongside “Share the Dignity” aligns perfectly with this mission, allowing us to directly impact women in need by providing essentials that restore a sense of dignity and hope. It's incredibly rewarding to know that we can use our platform to make a tangible difference for women facing challenging circumstances within our community.
For those who want to help, what types of personal hygiene products are most needed for these donations?
or clasps to help keep everything safe and organised. Above all we aim for bags that are in good condition, clean and free from any heavy wear so they offer both functionality and a sense of dignity to the women who receive them.
How can people donate to the drive, and is there a deadline for donations?
Essential
hygiene items are most needed, especially items that can make a big difference in someone’s daily comfort and well being. These include basics like soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes and sanitary products.
basics can make a huge difference, not only in meeting physical needs but also in restoring dignity, confidence and a sense of normalcy during difficult times. What inspired you to get involved with the It’s in the Bag campaign this year?
My inspiration for getting involved with the “It’s in the Bag” campaign comes from my love for the community and my belief that
For those looking to help, essential hygiene items are most needed, especially items that can make a big difference in someone's daily comfort and well being. These include basics like soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes and sanitary products. Additionally everyday items like hair brushes, wipes and tissues can be incredibly valuable. Small luxuries such as hand lotion, makeup, stationary, books, socks, ear phones and lip balm are also appreciated, as they bring a little extra comfort and care to women going through tough times. Every donation big or small goes a long way in helping women feel respected and supported. Are there specific guidelines for the handbags themselves?
Yes, there are a few guidelines for the handbags to ensure they are practical and uplifting for the recipients who receive them. We ask for new or gently used handbags that are large enough to hold a range of essential items. Ideally the bags should have secure closures, like zippers
Donating to the drive is simple and makes a huge impact. People can drop off their donations to The Witchy Nook, where we will be collecting items and handbags to include in the “It's in the Bag” campaign. We encourage anyone interested in getting involved to bring their contributions into the shop at any time, we will continue to support women in the local community year round through organisations like Liberty and the local hospital. Every item donated helps us make a difference and we are grateful for the community's support in uplifting women during difficult times. What impact do you hope these donations will have on the women who receive them?
My hope is that these donations offer more than just essential items; I want them to bring a sense of dignity, care and hope to each woman who receives them. For women in crisis, even small comforts can be incredibly meaningful, reminding them that they are valued and supported by their community. Ultimately I want every woman to feel seen, respected and empowered, knowing that there are people who genuinely care about their well being.
Where can we find out more about the drive or get in touch?
For anyone interested in learning more about the drive or getting involved, you can visit us at The Witchy Nook, where we are happy to answer any questions and provide all the relevant information. Additionally you can jump onto www.sharethedignity.org.au for all the important facts related to the drive. Follow us on our socials to keep up to date with the drive and all that is happening in the shop.
Thanks Bianca.

FROM THE STUNNED MULLET with LOU PERRI
Yep you can feel it in the air again. There’s no doubt about it - that time of year is here… with the passing of every year it seems to come around more quickly than ever.
Of course, how could it have slipped our mind? The silly season, the festive season, the holiday season – call it what you will, it’s coming. Whether you like it or not, whether you’re fully prepared or in abject denial it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away.
What is it about this time of year that so divides us? Why does it strike fear, make that terror in the heart of some, and make others bounce off the walls with glee.
Why were some eagerly planning the festooning of their exteriors way back when we wore long sleeves and others only emerging from the foetal position they’ve been curled up in on Dec 24, in a mad panic of desperate purchasing at 4:30pm?
I mean really, it is impossible to avoid unless you happen to live on Mars (although Elon Musk has plans to change that), but all the stuff was in the shops since September, and now that all the Halloween stuff has been packed away it’s full-frontal merch assault! And don’t go thinking you can even go in to some kind of COVID style lockdown to
The whe SHEBANG
avoid, or even in the previously mentioned foetal position till Xmas eve… the second you open your inbox BAM! – there it is. The digital equivalent of Santa’s workshop, right there in its festive fonts and Black Friday panic buying glory!
However, even with such comprehensive reminding, call to action marketing and general guilt tripping it is still quite possible to turn a blind eye. Even when the elaborate Christmas light displays are lighting up the night and reindeer carrots are bagged up in the supermarket…
Because in true “boy who cried wolf” style, it is ever so easy to block it all out, to file away the copious reminding until, oh no – somehow you’ve missed that shipping deadline, there are no Xmas lights left at Bunnings, and no hams left at the butcher. Hmm turns out they were right. All the panic merchants of “buy now book now”, “you didn’t know you needed it in your life till now but obviously now really, really must have it etc etc”. Turns out there was some urgency after
all and maybe could have given it a bit more thought way back when.
Cynicism and joke aside, there is no doubt that it’s a crazy time for mostly everyone in every way and whether you thrive on the craziness or wish desperately for it to be over is another matter entirely.
Now to re hash what is said every year in this column in one way or another. It is totally ok to do Christmas your way. Whether that is the whole shebang or completely minimalist. If it feels like too much pressure, it probably is and it is completely ok to lighten the load!
Whether that is the whole shebang or completely minimalist. If it feels like too much pressure, it probably is and it is completely ok to lighten the load!
At the end of the day, the festive season is one where we get the chance to spend time with our nearest and dearest, kick back with our colleagues for once, or at the very least to just enjoy the exquisite summer vibes available in this little region with its ‘best climate in Australia’.
Cheers to that! Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and New Year, however you play it.
Post COVID era, people are wanting more casual and uncomplicated options when dining out and this style of Italian dining seems to fit that mould perfectly.
Take us through The Other Side PMQ, what makes it a must visit for Port Macquarie locals and visitors to the area?
e Other Side PMQ is a journey of Italian food and wine set in the most iconic of Port Macquarie locations, across the road from beautiful Town Beach in the Mantra Observatory Hotel.
Can you share the story of how The Other Side PMQ came to be?
Whilst travelling to Italy in 2023 I was inspired by the simplicity of the regional cuisine, where fresh, simple, yet incredibly delicious elements make every dining experience a joy.
The Other Side PMQ is a journey of Italian food and wine set in the most iconic of Port Macquarie locations, across the road from beautiful Town beach in the Mantra Observatory Hotel. The food is delicious, yet simple and casual, designed to be shared amongst friends, either for delectable antipasti with cocktails, or something more substantial paired with our beautiful Italian inspired wine list.
What is the core concept of the restaurant?
The Other Side PMQ is definitely the place if you’re after more of a casual dining experience. Sharing a couple of antipasti with a cocktail is a must, or perhaps a sneaky lunch post beach! You can book online via www. theothersidepmq.com.au but we also welcome you to walk by and check us out for lunch or dinner Tuesday-Saturday.
Being of Italian origin, incorporating Italian flavour into the menu has always been a dream…it was only a matter of time!
The Other Side PMQ is also a perfect family dining experience with menu options to suit all ages and the simplicity of the menu means the food comes out nice and quick to keep the kids happy!
Please introduce your team and head chefs to our readers.
We’re so very fortunate to have our head chef Timothy Deas running the kitchen at The Other Side PMQ. Tim has been a key member of our kitchen team at The Stunned Mullet and has relished the opportunity to run TOS kitchen. And on Front of House we are sure many of our locals will be familiar with the service of our amazing Robert Francis from The Mullet. He is an absolute dynamo on the floor and will ensure that your dining experience is exactly what you want it to be – whether that is quick and casual or you want to kick back and settle in for the long haul.
Can you tell us about your menu, and what are the must try’s and favourite dishes?
Where do I start ? There’s so much to share, I’ll give you a snapshot, the rest you’ll have to come and try yourself…
Our menu is quite Italian inpspired in a traditional sense with antipasti, breads, charcuterie and olives and then some gorgeous smaller dishes that are perfect for sharing. My picks would be our king prawns with nduja emulsion (this is an absolutely more-ish spreadable Italian hot salami) and our fried baby squid with fennel and basil – melts in your mouth and is a perfect summer dish! Then there is my personal favourite section –
our pasta menu.
You simply cannot go past our most iconic of dishes from Puglia in the south (a region known as ‘the food bowl of Italy’) - orecchiette with salsiccia, chilli, potato, broccolini and ricotta salata. Orecchiette meaning ‘ear shaped’ in Italian, this is one of my favourite pastas and this dish is so simple but it is absolutely more-ish!
Mains, don’t miss our slow cooked wagyu beef with sugo, cherry tomato and herb butter. Just so much flavour and the definition of comfort food.
Oh and did I mention the desserts… we do an absolutely insane torta caprese with amerena cherries - an Italian flourless chocolate cake that is completely perfect in that it’s not too sweet but oh so chocolatey!

LACHLAN HORSLEY & COREY BAKER
Finnians Tavern has recently brought home Best Live Music Venue in NSW at the AHA Awards and the boys are about to head o to represent at the national awards. We spoke to Lachlan Horsley and Corey Baker about their passion for supporting local musicians and bringing exciting live shows to the Port Macquarie region.
Hi guys. Congratulations on winning Best Live Music Venue in NSW at the AHA Awards! How does it feel to receive such recognition?
Hi, thanks so much! We are still ecstatic about bringing home the award! This award is a testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of our entire team, the amazing artists who have performed here, and of course, the incredible patrons who have helped us bring this venue to life. This award has inspired us to keep creating unforgettable live music experiences.
What does this award mean to you and to the team at Finnians Tavern?
This award means the world to us and the entire team at Finnians! It’s recognition of the dedication we put into making Finnian’s a standout venue for live music and a place where
the community feels at home. It motivates us to continue elevating what we offer and solidifying Finnian’s as a cornerstone of live original music in NSW.
You’re now going to the National AHA Awards – how exciting! What are you looking forward to most at this event, and how does it feel to represent Finnians on a national stage?
So exciting! Representing Finnian’s Tavern on a national stage is a tremendous honor and an opportunity we’re incredibly proud of! We are most looking forward to connecting with other hospitality industry leaders, celebrating the incredible work done in venues around the country and gaining inspiration to bring back to Finnians. Being among the best of the best is humbling, we’re eager to soak up the experience, cheer on fellow nominees, and of course, celebrate how far we’ve come. It’s a moment we will never forget.
What do you think sets Finnians apart as a live entertainment venue, and what do you believe was the deciding factor in winning this award?
What sets us apart as a live music venue is the unique atmosphere we’ve cultivated. We focus on creating memorable experiences for both the artists and audiences, ensuring every show feels special. Our team’s commitment to quality, from sound and lighting to hospitality, ensures that every detail contributes to an unforgettable night.
As for the deciding factor in winning this award, we believe it’s our unwavering dedication to live original music and our ability to consistently deliver. We’ve worked hard to become a space where emerging and established artists alike feel valued and music lovers know they’ll always have an incredible experience. It’s that balance of passion, professionalism and community support that likely stood out to the judges.
With the summer holiday season just around the corner, what can visitors look forward to at Finnians? Do you have any exciting events lined up?
We are gearing up for an incredible summer of live music here at Finnians. We’ve got some of the country’s hottest acts coming to town! Here are some of the highlights.

Why do you guys feel it’s so important to keep the great live music venues thriving? And how important is it to you to support
performers?
Great live music venues are the heartbeat of the music scene, bringing people together to connect with audiences and grow their careers.
Receiving this award feels amazing, but the real reward is knowing we’ve created something people love and connect with.
Supporting local talent is a huge priority for us. We believe in fostering a vibrant community and helping emerging performers shine. It’s all about keeping the music alive!
For anyone who hasn’t visited Finnians yet, what would you say makes it a must-visit spot in Port Macquarie?
Finnian’s is the go-to spot in Port Macquarie for amazing live music, a great vibe and unforgettable nights. With top local and touring acts, plus a welcoming atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to experience the best of the town.
Looking ahead, what are your future plans for Finnians? Any new projects or goals on the horizon?
We’re focused on bringing more diverse live music to Port Macquarie, hosting exciting community events and continuing to evolve as a top destination for great music and unforgettable experiences. Our goal is to keep Finnians buzzing with energy and connected to our vibrant community.
What has been the most rewarding part of this journey for both of you, from taking on the venue to receiving this award?
The most rewarding part of this journey has been watching Finnian’s evolve into a thriving space for live music and the community, in a town where options were previously limited. A highlight was hosting the legendary act Grinspoon recently. It was wild seeing them perform on our stage and to share that experience with our audience. Receiving this award feels amazing, but the real reward is knowing we’ve created something people love and connect with. It’s been an incredible ride, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.
Where can we keep up to date on events or get in touch?

There has to be a perk to having that Aussie Summer Christmas.
Seasonal fruit in those picnic baskets, cut up watermelon next to the pool or beach, berries and cherries on Nan’s pavlova and those local limes in that cold beer. All of these seasonal fruits remind me of a perfect day. For a healthier holiday, how about the gift of fruit. The girls here work hard like elves making the best trays for that special someone.
Cherries are definitely my pick of the year! Remember when choosing cherries look for that blemish free and shiny skin so you can enjoy them fresh off the stalk. Make sure you pop in and say g’day to Ken and our amazing staff, and thank you to all our new and regular customers. We wouldn’t be where we are without you! Merry Christmas!
At the Hastings Liquor Accord, we encourage everyone to make the most of the festive season responsibly and safely. Our message is simple: Leave your car at home as you enjoy our licensed premises. We’re reminding our community of the importance of planning ahead to get home safely after a night out. Whether you’re meeting friends at a pub, dining at a local restaurant, or attending an end-of-year work party, the key to a safe and enjoyable celebration is having a “Plan B.”
Why You Need a Plan B
During the holidays, increased social gatherings can lead to a higher likelihood of impaired driving incidents. A good Plan B ensures that you can enjoy the festivities without the worry of how to get home safely. It might be booking a taxi, nominating a designated driver, or taking the advantage of venue courtesy buses. Whatever your Plan B looks like, make sure it’s in place before you head out.
The Importance of Responsible Drinking
The Hastings Liquor Accord is committed to promoting responsible drinking and reducing the harm associated with alcohol misuse. Our licensed premises are proud to offer a welcoming environment where patrons can enjoy themselves responsibly. This season, many venues are hosting special

OYSTER
COOK TIME 10 MINS
INGREDIENTS
Jumbo Oyster
Fire Roasted Salsa Chives
HOW IT’S DONE
Loosen the oyster meat from the shell and clear any excess shell if there is any present. Apply a spoon full or two of fire roasted salsa around the oyster in the shell, enough to almost cover the oyster meat. Nestle the oyster shell into the coals and allow the salsa and oyster to cook for a few minutes or until the salsa starts to bubble. Remove the oyster from the coals and add a sprinkle of chives or other fine chopped herb as a garnish.
MENU ITEM STARTER METHOD CAVEMAN SERVING 1 OYSTER PP
Final word
This recipe works with a whole range of salsas, sauces or broths. The shell may become brittle the longer you leave the oyster in the coals. Oysters can be eaten raw, so you only need a few minutes to prepare and cook this one. Salsas generally have a high liquid content which can boil over high heat, so be careful to make sure you don’t suck back the oyster until you know it’s cooled enough to eat so as not to burn your mouth.

ntroduce yourself to us, Jak. Where are you from?
I was born in Newcastle and moved to Beechwood when I was about 12 years old. After finishing high school, I briefly returned to Newcastle to complete my undergraduate degree at university. Once COVID hit, I relocated back to Beechwood, where I’ve been based since.
You’re heavily involved in the Beechwood community. Why is it so important to you?
For me, it’s about giving back to a community that gave me so much during my upbringing. The sense of support and connection that thrives in Beechwood is incredibly unique, and my time living in Newcastle only made me appreciate it more. Communities where people genuinely rally together to help each other are rare, and it’s even more inspiring when you see different groups collaborating to make a real difference.
Beechwood has been experiencing rapid growth, with many young families moving to the area. Some of my fondest memories are of local events like the Billycart Derby and playing cricket as a child, and I’m lucky to work alongside an incredible group of volunteers to keep those traditions alive.
The support we receive from local businesses also amazes me. It’s this backing that enables us to do what we do. A lot of credit is due to you, your organisation and the team at the Beechwood Hotel, whose ongoing support
lies at the heart of so many of our community initiatives.
You’re the President and 1st Grade Captain of the Beechwood Cricket Club. Tell us about your history with the club and what’s on the horizon.
I’ve had the privilege of playing all my junior and senior cricket with Beechwood Cricket Club. Around seven years ago, I took on the role of Club President, and since then, I’ve been fortunate to have great support from those around me in running the club.
Over the past few years, the club has grown significantly, and we’ve worked hard to foster a culture centered on inclusion and giving back to the community. We hope that the future will follow a similar trend especially through our junior teams where we are investing heavily.
One of the most exciting events on our calendar is the annual Beechwood 7’s fundraiser day. It’s not just a fantastic day of cricket but also one of our key fundraising efforts, helping us reinvest in the community ground that serves both the club and the wider Beechwood community year-round.
You dedicate a lot of your time to the Beechwood community. What else keeps you busy?

How are the legs after running a half marathon every day for 10 days straight in October? Fully recovered?
Not quite! I’m still dealing with a few minor injuries from the challenge, but thankfully, nothing too serious. The sense of accomplishment makes it all worthwhile. My partner, Tahlia, and I managed to raise $12,500 for homelessness, and that achievement far outweighs any injuries.
Looking back, the experience still feels surreal. We finished 7th on the nationwide team leaderboard for funds raised, which is something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s a testament to the power of community, something I’ve touched on throughout this interview. The support we received from those around us is something we’ll cherish forever. Lastly, what’s the best thing about Beechwood?
I think my answer throughout this interview has been consistent—it's the people. The community in Beechwood and the amazing support system we have here truly set this place apart. It’s a privilege to be part of something so special.

So here we are, at the end of another year. Looking back and wondering how it is that we are here again so quickly.
If you are anything like me, reaching the end of 2024 feels like quite an achievement. Saying the year 2025 seems big, really big. During this period, so much has happened on a global scale of course. In fact an entire quarter of a century has passed since the ominous Y2K period, but what is really scary is this. We are now employing people who weren’t even born in they year 2000 when we were all worried the entire global technological and economic system would collapse overnight… (it didn’t do that until 2024, and somehow we’re all still here to tell the story)!
December always seems like a crazy rush to the end for me… while many people are looking forward to a well-earned break, we are ramping up. We are planning for the impending rush up to the 24th, when people crash through our doors with a dazed look on their faces, hoping we still have one last scrap of wrapping paper and that our sticky tape hasn’t run out. It’s a crazy but super fun time of the year for those in retail like us, it’s a month where all the planning and preparation comes to fruition, and of course we always love to see the kids and Dads that only stumble through our doors once or twice a year too!
I thought I’d use this month’s musing to
reflect on the year that was. I jumped online and had a look at our previous articles, and what a varied range of topics we have covered together! From a fabulous Women in Business feature back in March, a “how to” Holiday Packing guide in May, through to sharing the Story of how Ant and I became the proud owners of Meg + Me in June.
July’s Musing saw us share a wrap up of our first Shop Takeover event, where we transformed our retail space for one day to create a Pre-Loved Clothing Sale event, while in August I was clearly being influenced by the increase in Personal Colour Analysis posts online so we talked “Seasonal Colours” together! In September I took you all on a journey of how I Spring Clean my wardrobe, which although it doesn’t sound all that engaging, it really resonated with a lot of you!
In October I discussed the importance of supporting small business, especially in regional areas. This too struck a chord with many readers, as we all appreciate how different life would be without the hardworking families providing the unique array of businesses in our towns. November was a big month for me on both a business and personal level, so I put my pen down and regrouped, unfortunately missing
my opportunity to share a Musing with you. Let me tell you, it didn’t go unnoticed! I have been spending a few extra days “on the floor” in the shop lately, and I cannot tell you how many times I heard “What happened to you last month? The first thing I do when I pick up the magasine is look for your article!” Point taken. I will try not to let the team down again!
So as I sit here, with the cicadas heralding the cessation of Spring and the shift into Summer, I look am looking forward to the year ahead.
What will it look like for those in business? Who knows? But what I can guarantee is, that for all of us in business, we will continue to push and grow, to challenge and change, according to what’s needed at the time. Together we will fight to stay relevant amidst a shifting landscape of technology and the economy and we will try to always do it with a smile.
But until we face 2025 and all that will come with that, we will soak up the sun, the fun and the vibrance of our fabulous piece of the coast and look forward to supporting each other through all the inevitable ups and downs that will come our way. Together, we’ve got this!

DOGS ON THE AVENUE SHOP
an you share a bit about how you got started with Dogs On The Avenue Shop, where did the idea for this business come from?
After COVID, we opened Doggy Day-care Port Macquarie to provide a safe, fun environment for dogs. I quickly introduced birthday parties and started making cakes, which led to treats and the idea of opening a dog barkery.
I spent six months testing recipes for biscuits, treats, and cakes with day-care dogs before selling them in our pet shop. Confident in my products, packaging, and business plan, I bought a commercial oven and launched Dogs On The Avenue Shop.
It's been a great six months, during which I've added non-food products to my range. What kind of products do you offer, and what makes them unique compared to others on the market?
I create healthy dog treats in various flavors,
Sarah Armitstead loves spoiling her own fur-babies, and now yours too with her locally made doggy treats and gi s! When we saw her adorable Christmas range we just had to find out all about it.
tested on different breeds. Like my Breath Buster biscuits, made from mint and parsley, which help with bad breath and digestion. I aim to be known for fun flavors like Cheese N Barkin and to ensure dogs eat fresh, healthy products that I also feed my own pets.
I am a creative person, so I enjoy making new things for our gift range, the options are endless. I also love making bespoke gifts for anyone that reaches out.
I offer non-food items such as bandanas and limited-edition gifts.
My popular nose and elbow balm are crowd favorites, it’s really important to look after your dogs paw pads all year round.
I have also priced my products where there is something for everyone’s budgets.
My branding distinguishes me as unique and professional. Once customers enter my store, they notice my distinctive product packaging and variety. I excel in customer service through my product knowledge and the attention I give to each customer. When you visit me, you will also
meet my staff (my mother and sister!) who add even more value to what I offer.
Your Christmas range looks amazing! Can you share what’s included in this festive collection for our furry friends?
This Christmas, we offer a variety of products including advent calendars, dog-friendly chocolate boxes, woofmas lunch bowls, stockings and sacks, Santa paw cookies, Christmas bandanas, woofmas baubles, and limited-edition Christmas flavour treats, as well as all our regular flavours. Our aim is to provide quality products for dogs.
What inspired you to create a special Christmas range?
Dogs have become integral members of our families, no longer confined to the backyard while we remain indoors. We take pleasure in pampering our dogs and involving them in our activities. Therefore, it is only fitting that Woofmas be a day where our furry friends are indulged and included in the celebrations. Many of us do not have human children or they
have moved on so our dogs are our children, my dogs Winston and Nash are a part of everything I do, so celebrating and seeing their faces brings me so much joy.
The success of my Birthday range inspired me to create the Howl-oween range, which was very well-received. This positive response encouraged me to develop an extensive Christmas collection.
Just as humans enjoy advent calendars, which bring joy and excitement, I am confident that your dogs will experience the same level of enthusiasm and happiness.
We will be at the Kempsey Riverside Markets on the 7th of December, The Foreshore Markets on the 14th of December, and at the Christmas Town Square Markets on the 21st and 22nd of December. We will have freshly baked Christmas pupcakes at each location that you can freeze and thaw Christmas day.
work hard to bring unique products locally. Rest assured, everything I make uses top-quality ingredients and love, these are the treats I feed my dogs.
I'd love to be tagged in photos and videos of your dog’s enjoying their treats and gifts. Watching their excitement when opening their advent calendar will be fun to see each dog and their different reactions. It only takes a few days for them to recognize it's full of delicious surprises.
I’ve had such a fun time designing everything and starting baking everything this weekend. Are there any standout items or best-sellers in the Christmas collection that customers are loving?
The advent calendars have been very popular with my customers since we advertised the pre-sale due to limited availability. They are also eagerly anticipating the Sweet Potato and Honey, as well as the Beef, Liver, and Cranberry Woofalicious Paw Treats for a special Christmas treat.
Just as humans enjoy advent calendars, which bring joy and excitement, I am confident that your dogs will experience the same level of enthusiasm and happiness.
Where can we shop your products before Christmas?
Our biscuit range is available at Doggy Day-Care Port Macquarie, Studio 3 Espresso on Murray Street and Big Boiz at the Kmart complex. Orders can be placed through the website dogsontheavenue.shop or by messaging directly through Facebook or Instagram to arrange click and collect or delivery. We don’t want any dogs to miss out.
What do you hope dog owners and their pets take away from using your products, especially during the festive season?
I really just want customers and their dogs to enjoy my products and to capture the happy moments when giving them their treats or gifts. They aren't with us long enough, spoil them as much as you can, they really do make the world a better place.
Support small businesses this Christmas; we
Do you have plans to expand your product range or introduce new lines in the future?
Absolutely, I am eager to transition this into my full-time profession, and I have an abundance of ideas. I enjoy creating limited edition flavours, and I will continue to develop recipes throughout the year to align with various celebrations and events. Additionally, I aim to offer more personalised products to my customers. My cakes are gaining popularity, and I would like to expand my offerings to include bespoke gifts for my clientele.

Lilly & Brendan Hoey
SUMMERLAND HEALTH TOY DRIVE
Lilly and Brendan Hoey, owners of Summerland Health, have been running a Christmas Toy Drive for a number of years now, and the community continues to get behind their mission; bringing joy to every family over the holiday season, no ma er their circumstances.
Can you tell us a bit about the Christmas toy drive at Summerland Health? How did it all begin, and why is it an important part of your holiday season?
The toy drive began as a way for Summerland Health to give back to the community, and it holds a particularly special place for Lilly. When she was a child, her family benefited from a similar service, so organising this toy drive feels like paying that kindness forward. It’s become an integral part of our holiday
season because it allows us to spread joy and support local families during a time that can be challenging for many.
How does the toy drive work? Are there specific types of toys or gifts you’re looking for?
We collect new, unwrapped toys at both of our clinics. By keeping the gifts unwrapped, we ensure the Salvation Army can match them to the children they support. It’s a simple process that allows anyone to contribute easily, knowing their donation will brighten a
Who are the primary beneficiaries of the toy drive, and how do you ensure the donations reach families and children in need?
The toys we collect go directly to the Salvation Army in Port Macquarie, who distribute them to local families in need. At the end of our toy drive, we deliver all the donations, knowing that the Salvation Army’s established systems ensure the toys reach the children who need them most.
What has the response been from the local community over the years?
The community has been incredible. Last year, we collected over 350 toys, and when we delivered them, the Salvation Army shared how worried they’d been about having enough toys for the demand. Our contribution helped alleviate that stress. What’s especially heartwarming is that we don’t just see
support from our patients—people who have never visited our clinics also drop in to donate. We’ve made it easy and convenient, which has encouraged many people who want to help but didn’t know how.
For those who want to participate, when and where can they drop off toys, and is there a deadline for donations?
Toys can be dropped off at either of our Summerland Health clinics in Port Macquarie or Wauchope. We’re accepting donations until Friday, December 13th.
What type of impact does the toy drive have on the families who receive these gifts?
For many families, these gifts take the financial pressure off during the holiday season and ensure their children experience the joy of unwrapping something special on Christmas morning. Most of us have cherished memories of those moments, and as parents ourselves, we know there’s nothing better than seeing your child smile. We want every child in our community to have that experience, no matter
their family’s circumstances. How has the toy drive evolved over the years?
Every year, the toy drive has grown beyond what we ever imagined. We’ve received more donations each year, which means we’ve been able to help more families in need. It’s become a true community effort, and seeing how generous people are continues to amaze us.
Most of us have cherished memories of those moments, and as parents ourselves, we know there’s nothing be er than seeing your child smile.
What are some of the benefits you’ve noticed from giving back to the community in this way? How does it align with Summerland Health’s values?
At Summerland Health, our passion is helping people, whether it’s through their health or supporting them in other ways. The toy drive gives us and the community a way to make a tangible difference for families in need. No one should have to face Christmas morning without the joy of their kids opening something. It’s a chance to come together, spread kindness, and show what community really means.
Finally, what message would you like to send to the community this holiday season?
Cherish the festive season with your loved ones. It’s not about how much you spend but the memories you create together that truly matter. Thank you for your generosity and for being a part of making this season special for so many families.
Thanks Guys.

Hayley Young - Stylist & Creative Director of e Curve Collective. A new and exiting business opening right here in Port Macquarie just in time for Christmas and the summer season.
Hayley Young THE CURVE
COLLECTIVE
Please introduce us to yourself and your connection to Port Macquarie.
I was born and bred in Port Macquarie, I did all of my schooling here and then was a lil bit of a teenage dirtbag, I then moved away when I was 18 to the Gold Coast.
I had my first baby boy when I was 18 and decided after a few years, it was time to come home to Port Macquarie, well, I did fall in love with an old friend, who is now my husband of 11 years and we have 3 beautiful boys together.
What inspired you to start The Curve Collective, and how did the idea come about?
I have always been interested in fashion and styling and feeling confident in the clothes you put on. I have always been a curvy girl but have fluctuated my whole life, I have been a size 10 (thanks hyperemesis) but have also been a size 22. I always felt anxiety when going into shops because it seems that each store you walk into has a different cut or shape for each size. I had a wardrobe malfunction for an event recently and do you think I could find a dressy piece of clothing in
my size, last minute? Nope!
So that inspired me to pull the trigger and pursue my passion project once and for all. Can you share the mission or core values that drive The Curve Collective?
The mission at TCC is to close the “curve” on women’s fashion and have a safe space for all women, whether a size 6 or a size 26, to walk in and be able to walk out with something to make them feel confident. And if I dont have something in store that you are searching for, I will make it my mission to find it for you!
How does the name "The Curve Collective" reflect the essence of your business?
I see the “curve” as a circle and women’s fashion is also circular, at present there are so many gaps in this circle and I want to close this curve, one woman at a time. Most women have curves, whether it be a size 6 or a size 26, we can all have curves. Who is the ideal customer or target
audience for The Curve Collective?
Ladies, girls, women, if you are a female, then I am sure I have something for you.
How do you hope to empower or support your customers through your offerings?
I want women to walk in and feel safe.
My approach is all about providing personalised service, where I take the time to understand each client’s unique needs, goals, and circumstances.
Our bodies are given such a hard time with what the world expects it to look like, I have curves, I have cellulite, I have stretch marks but I can still dress my body to feel confident… and I promise, I wont call you babes! ;)
What do you think sets The Curve
Collective apart from similar businesses in the industry?
I think in our region, we dont have anything like this, where you can find brand names, designer labels, high end casual clothes for a lady, whether she is petite or plus size. We are all women and TCC does not discriminate any shape or size.
Continued over...
THE CURVE COLLECTIVE
Can you walk us through the main products or services you offer at The Curve Collective?
We are offering one on one styling consults. A boutique for good quality clothes and accessories.
We have designer dress hire for every lady. I have sourced designers that offer plus size and I am making them available to ladies in our area for a special event.
Our gorgeous Zara will be offering lash extensions lash lifts and all things brow in our new beauty room.
We also have a spray tan booth, which I hope will help ladies who have body insecurities to feel comfortable and feel confident to come and get the glow up they deserve.
Are you focusing on a specific industry or niche, such as fashion, wellness, or lifestyle?
Fashion is definitely what our focus is but I would say wellness too. Mental health is such a huge problem in the current times and if we can help a beautiful lady feel better about
herself and rid some of the social anxiety that we have all felt before, then my mission is complete.
What kind of experience do you want your customers to have when they visit or engage with The Curve Collective?
I want them to feel respected and beautiful. I want them to feel included and safe to be themselves.
What has been the most rewarding part of launching The Curve Collective so far?
Seeing the amazing village of women and friends I have behind me, cheering me on. I could not have done it without them but also seeing my boys smile at me and to watch them, watch me pursue a goal is priceless. How do you balance the demands of starting a business with personal life and self-care?
I am a mum of 4 boys and my husband runs a very busy construction company so balance… hmmm... what is that… wine or coffee?! In all honesty, I do have the worlds best
husband who backs me all the way and we work as a great team. When he needs his fishing time he gets it and when I need me time, he makes space for me to reenergise. Who are some women (or mentors) who have inspired you along your entrepreneurial journey?
Jane Lu from Showpo, she started her business from her parents garage (and she is going to be a guest speaker in our 2025 launch so watch this space), Nadine Muller, she is a powerhouse of woman (look her up on Insta) she helps women find the 10x version of who they are and rid us of our self doubt.
Where can our readers find The Curve Collective?
We are located in the Bellbowrie Centre, across from Ports best bakehouse, Cassera’s, its a win win, grab yourself an amazing coffee, visit the Botanic Merchant for anything beautiful in the home and then come and find yourself a beautiful piece of clothing from usits retail therapy 101. :)
Thanks Hayley.
Is Shoulder Pain Interfering with Your Daily Life?
Has shoulder pain made it difficult to sleep on your side, reach up, or even dress comfortably? If so, you might be experiencing what’s known as a Shoulder Impingement.
What Is Shoulder Impingement?
Shoulder impingement happens when tendons and bursae in your shoulder get “pinched” as you move your arm. This can lead to pain, swelling and limit your ability to lift or rotate your arm comfortably.
What Are The Signs To Watch For?
Shoulder impingement can start suddenly or gradually, with symptoms like:
• Pain at the top or side of your shoulder: Often a deep ache or sharp pain in this area.
• Increased pain when lifting your arm: Especially noticeable during overhead
movements—like reaching up to hang clothes on the line.
• Nighttime Discomfort: Pain that gets worse when lying on the affected shoulder, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.
• Weakness in Your Arm: Making daily tasks feel difficult and frustrating.
What Can Cause Shoulder Impingement?
• Poor Posture: Years of slouching or a forward-slumped posture can shift the shoulder joint into a position that places extra strain on the rotator cuff tendons and bursae.
• Muscle Imbalances in the Shoulder: When some shoulder muscles are stronger or tighter than others, it can throw off
your shoulder’s natural movement and positioning, leading to increased pressure and pain.
• Overuse and Repetitive Movements: Repeatedly using your shoulder for the same motion over time—whether reaching, lifting, or working overhead—can wear down the tendons, making impingement more likely. If you’re tired of shoulder pain interfering with your life, don’t wait any longer. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help!

UPDATE
with RACHEL LEMAN
FROM MISS MOTIVATOR
Hey team, welcome to another Fitness Update. It’s hard to believe we are pre y much done with 2024!!
As the year draws to a close and the holiday season rapidly approaches and things get “busy” it’s easy to put health goals on the backburner, telling yourself, “I’ll start in January.” But here’s the truth: You will always be busy. Life doesn’t magically slow down in the new year. By waiting until January to act, you risk wasting the first few weeks of 2025 or even longer in most cases.
Instead, commit to your health now, plant the seeds of momentum and reap the rewards later for starting now. Here’s how to make realistic health goals and set yourself up for success in 2025.
1. Acknowledge the “Busy” Excuse and Do it Anyway. The perfect time to start doesn’t exist. Work deadlines, social events and family commitments won’t vanish come January. The key is to stop waiting for the “right time” and take action anyway. Even small steps can create powerful change over time. Start incorporating simple habits like a daily walk, an extra serving of vegetables, or a commitment to hydration into your routine now. These small changes can build a foundation for a healthier lifestyle, ensuring you hit 2025 with confidence and energy.
2. Make a Realistic Holiday Plan to Stay Active. The holidays can disrupt your routine, but they don’t have to completely derail your health. Plan now for ways to stay active, even during the busiest days. Commit to at least
15-30 minutes of movement daily, whether it’s a quick workout, yoga session, or brisk walk. If you’re travelling, walking is a fantastic way to explore new areas while staying fit. Say no to excessive sitting around by making physical activity part of your holiday plan—go for a walk, play a game of backyard cricket, or have a family dance off.
3. Add More Fruits and Vegetables to Your Diet. Nutrition doesn’t have to be about extreme dieting or cutting out all indulgences. A simple and achievable goal is to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Commit to adding at least one serve of veggies to every meal or swapping a sugary snack for a piece of fruit. Not only does this nourish your body with essential nutrients, but it also keeps you fuller and less likely to overindulge in calorie-laden treats.
4. Enjoy Treats Without Guilt. The holidays are a time for celebration, and it’s normal to enjoy seasonal treats and festive beverages. The key is balance. You don’t need to deny yourself entirely, nor should you beat yourself up for indulging. Savour your favourite holiday foods mindfully and in moderation. Remember, one indulgent meal won’t ruin your progress, but consistently going overboard can set you back. Stay present, enjoy the moment and balance your treats with healthy meals and movement.
5. Walk. If you’re travelling during the holidays, walking is an excellent way to stay active and engaged. It’s not just exercise; it’s also an opportunity to experience your surroundings. Whether you’re exploring a new city, strolling
along a beach, or hiking a scenic trail, walking keeps you moving while enhancing your travel experience. Avoid the trap of lounging excessively or sticking to the same spot for hours. Say yes to adventure and no to inactivity.
6. Take Control of Your Health—You’re in Charge. Your health is your responsibility. No one else can make the choices that create a fitter, healthier version of you. Take ownership of your actions now and set yourself up for success. Create a plan for the coming weeks and start working on it immediately. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress. By the time 2025 rolls in, you won’t be dealing with guilt or frustration over overindulgence, you’ll be ahead, ready to tackle the new year with strength and confidence.
By committing to realistic actions, staying active, eating more fruits and vegetables, enjoying treats in moderation, and taking ownership of your health, you’ll enter 2025 feeling empowered, energised and ready to go! Take control, stay consistent, and enjoy the journey toward a healthier, stronger you. After all, the greatest gift you can give yourself is time spent looking after your own health and wellbeing, your future self will thank you.

CHRIS STEELE
BROKEN HEARTS BARBERSHOP
an you share a bit about your own background and how you came to start Broken Hearts Barbershop?
Before getting into cutting hair I served in the Australian Army for a period of 13 years. I was medically discharged due to a number of physical injuries sustained during my service as well as mental health conditions that arose after 2 deployments to Afghanistan. My wife and I moved to Port in 2016 and she acted as my full time carer for a period of 2 years whilst I went through numerous stints in hospital to help me rehabilitate.
Chris Steele became a barber and started Broken Hearts
Barbershop after being medically discharged from the Australian Army and a recovery period that was both physically and mentally challenging; his experience making him aware of the need for a safe and welcoming space for men to relax and unwind.
I was lucky enough to get a start in barbering with another Veteran based in Coffs Harbour until I was afforded the opportunity of a full time apprenticeship locally. The idea of Broken Hearts came from me noticing the need for a place for men to have some time out, unwind and relax in a safe environment whilst providing a service that hadn’t been seen in Port Macquarie. Our appointment system and relaxed time slots are an example.
You’ve created a space that focuses on turning grooming into an enjoyable experience. Can you share how you achieve this for your clients?
A haircut can very quickly turn into a task that gets rushed though when you have a spare 10 minutes between jobs. Our focus is to slow guys down and promote self care, We encourage people to build routine and set aside time to come in and switch off from the rest of the world. I'd like to think that the haircut is by default the result of your service. It's everything that you go through to get that result that keeps people coming back. You encourage true conversation and connection in your barbershop. Why do you think this is important and how has it resonated with your clients?
Having the opportunity to discuss real issues and develop real relationships is something that was needed for men in the hair space. We aren’t there just to cut your hair, we share with you the ups and downs including the birth of children or the loss of loved ones. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to genuinely ask you how you are to change the course of your day. It's interesting because it flows in all directions within the space, we are all here for each other and we are stronger together. I hope our clientele becomes invested in that journey with us. It builds a strong sense of belonging to a community.
From basic cuts to full restyles and cutthroat shaves, what’s the most popular service you offer? Are there any trends you’re noticing in men’s grooming?
Jody’s Cutthroat shave is absolutely amazing and is a must do experience. Skin fades are still the hottest service, we are loving the buzzcut skin fades at the moment, they are the perfect summer cut. Men are spending more time looking after themselves in general and we are all about it. We stock a wide range of shampoos, beard and styling products
to keep you looking your best and the range is only getting bigger and better. Running a barbershop like this must require creativity and passion. What’s your personal favourite part of the job? My favourite part of being a business owner is constantly developing and upskilling myself and my team. Since the inception of the business, I have invested over $20,000 in courses to continue to improve our skills and service. I am invested in ensuring those around me are pushed to be the best version of themselves within their work.
Can you share a bit about your team at the shop?
with the goal of looking after themselves whilst providing a comfortable space to do it. The Purpose of Broken Hearts is ‘in Service’ and stems from the roots of my military career. Broken Heart’s role within the community is to serve.
What’s your vision for the future of Broken Hearts Barbershop? Are there any new services or initiatives you’re excited about?
Men are spending more time looking after themselves in general and we are all about it. We stock a wide range of shampoos, beard and styling products to keep you looking your best and the range is only getting bigger and better.
I have 2 epic team members that both currently work 3 days a week. Jarrod is a senior stylist who learnt his trade in Brisbane at the Barber Academy. Originating from Kempsey he has a strong connection to his family and a passion for creativity in general. Give him a bit of freedom with his styling and you won't walk away disappointed.
Jody is our newly qualified stylist who completed her training at the Barber Academy in Sydney. I'm also lucky enough to call her my wife. She has an amazing way of making everyone’s day better and is extremely passionate in her craft. She has a beautiful connection to the veteran and first responder space and prides herself on serving the community.
What role do you see Broken Hearts playing in the Port Macquarie community?
We are a place for connection within the community, we bring people together
We have some great ideas for the new year, our product and service line will expand to incorporate skin care and facials. We are the only place in Port that offers this product line specifically designed for men. We plan on putting in a basin in the near future to provide the option to wash hair. I see Broken Hearts becoming more than just a place to cut hair. I'd love to expand and offer some community engagement outside of the shop, but I can't give away too much on that yet. Best to follow our socials to stay up to date.
What do you hope every client feels or takes away after a visit to Broken Hearts Barbershop?
I hope people feel heard and a sense of belonging as they walk out. I hope they can appreciate the time and care that is put into their service and are able to see the importance of setting time aside for some self care. In a world where we very rarely put ourselves first for a minute, know that it is ok and oftentimes in looking after yourself you are able to look after others better.
Thanks Chris.

Managing Sun Damage and Pigment Issues
What are the most common forms of sun damage and pigmentation that you see at your clinic? At Port
Medical Aesthetics Clinic (PMAC), we frequently encounter several forms of sun damage and pigmentation. The most common are:
- Solar Lentigines (sun spots or age spots): These are flat, brown spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, hands, and arms. They result from prolonged UV exposure and are a sign of aging skin.
- Melasma: This is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or grey-brown patches, usually on the face. It can be exacerbated by UV exposure and hormonal changes, particularly in women during pregnancy or while using oral contraceptives.
- Freckles: Freckles are small, flat spots that can appear after sun exposure, especially in individuals with lighter skin. They are generally harmless but can become more pronounced with sun exposure.
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): While not directly caused by sun damage, PIH can worsen after UV exposure. It occurs as a result of skin trauma, such as acne or cosmetic procedures, leading to darkened patches of skin.
- Actinic Keratoses: These are rough, scaly patches that form on sun-damaged skin, particularly with fair-skinned individuals. While not all actinic keratoses become cancerous, they are considered precancerous lesions and need monitoring.
How do you typically assess sun damage and pigmentation concerns? At PMAC, we use the Observ 320 skin analysis system, which provides a comprehensive assessment of both surface and deeper skin layers. This advanced imaging technology helps us detect and analyze pigmentation, sun damage, and other skin concerns that are not immediately visible to the naked eye. The Observ 320 allows our dermal clinician or team of nurses to create a tailored treatment plan by understanding the depth and severity of the pigmentation and sun damage. What treatment options are available for sun damage and pigmentation? There are lots of treatment modalities available depending on the type and severity of the pigmentation or sun damage. These include:
1. Topical Treatments: Our doctors can prescribe pigment lightening and controlling creams, which are made at the compounded pharmacy. These prescriptions are individulaised per patient, and often containing active ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, and kojic acid.
2. Chemical Peels: Peels like Glycolic acid, Salicylic acid, or TCA peels are excellent for reducing pigmentation and improving skin texture. They work by exfoliating the top layer of the skin, promoting the growth of new, evenly pigmented skin. These peels are offered by either our dermal clinician or our nurses.
3. Intense Pulsed Light: IPL is one of the most popular choices for treating pigmentation, sun damage, and melasmaa. It delivers light energy to target pigment and vascular irregularities without damaging the surrounding skin. IPL is often used to reduce sun spots, freckles, and melasmaa. It often has minimal downtime and is
almost painless.
4. Cosmelan Peel: For stubborn melasmaa cases, the Cosmelan Peel is a powerful depigmenting treatment that works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production. This peel is highly effective for addressing melasmaa, especially for patients who have not responded well to other treatments. We offer complimentary consultations to assess patients suitability for the cosmelan. How important is sun protection in managing pigmentation issues? Sun protection is absolutely essential, not only in preventing new pigmentation from forming but also in ensuring that any treatments for pigmentation are effective. We require patients to wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen every day, regardless of whether they are indoors or outdoors. This high level of sun protection helps block harmful UV rays that can worsen pigmentation.
In addition to SPF 50, we also recommend using a high-strength vitamin B3 (niacinamide) serum or cream. Niacinamide has been shown to reduce pigmentation, improve skin barrier function, and reduce the appearance of fine lines, making it an ideal complement to pigmentation treatments. We sell affordable options of both of these in clinic and on our website.

This month is often a very busy time. It can be hectic for many, with extra social catchups and visitors, and end of school/work arrangements, maybe there is extra travelling to visit family and friends, and Christmas shopping if that is your thing.
Often a time when we may experience longer wait queues, possibly less available parking spaces when we go looking for them.
And a time when our to-do-list lengthens, and possibly our patience shortens. We may also encounter others who are feeling stressed and their patience shortens.
TO HELP YOU ENJOY THIS SEASON TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR CALM TO HELP YOU FIND A QUIET PLACE WITHIN YOU AMIDST THE HUSTLE, BUSTLE AND NOISE
HERE ARE THREE SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE TOOLS.
• GIFT YOURSELF THIS MONTH THE POWERFUL TOOL OF MINDFULNESS
Choose to be more aware of the moment that you are experiencing.
Mindfulness reminds us to check in with ourselves and to notice what we are feeling and thinking. We can then choose to adjust
towards a better feeling place and to respond rather than react.
A few suggestions that you might find helpful:
Mindful Breathing. Bring focus to your Inhale and your Exhale. Follow your breathing for a few rounds of breath. Maybe slow your breathing down as you relax your brow and shoulders.
Mindful Body: Maybe slow your step down. Take a pause, take a break, have a rest or get extra sleep. Stay hydrated.
Or take yourself and the dog on a mindful wander or walk and enjoy the moment.
Maybe practice mindful eating once a day.
Mindful Thoughts: Be self-aware more often to notice your thoughts.
Maybe ask yourself, ‘Are they helpful, are they positive, or are they kind to myself or to others?’
If not, maybe try to find the positive or practice non-judgement.
Or pause before replying to give yourself the space to adjust your response.

Mind Your Diet: Eat for Digestive Health
The Christmas spread is hard to resist—rich foods, sweet treats, and festive beverages. While indulging is part of the fun, it can also disrupt your digestive system. Overeating or indulging in high-fat, sugary, or overly processed foods can lead to constipation, bloating, or even uncomfortable bowel movements. These symptoms not only cause discomfort but can put unnecessary strain on your body. To keep things running smoothly, aim for a balanced approach. Fill your plate with fiberrich foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Fiber helps regulate your digestive system, preventing constipation and promoting healthy bowel movements. A fiber-rich meal also supports overall gut health, which is key for keeping your bladder functioning properly. Staying hydrated is also crucial. Dehydration is a common issue during the holidays, especially when alcohol and caffeine are in the mix. Both can irritate the bladder and lead to more frequent trips to the bathroom, or even urgency and discomfort. Drinking plenty of water, alongside herbal teas or sparkling water, will help maintain healthy bladder function
STAYING MERRY AND HEALTHY THIS CHRISTMAS PRIORITISING YOUR BOWEL AND BLADDER HEALTH
e festive season is upon us! For many, it’s a time of joy, social gatherings, and indulgent foods. However, as a women’s health physiotherapist, I know that this time of year can also bring some unexpected challenges for our health—especially when it comes to our bowels and bladders. e combination of disrupted routines, rich foods, and extra stress can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like bloating, constipation, or urinary urgency. But with a few simple strategies, you can enjoy the season while keeping your digestive system and bladder in top shape.
and ease digestion. Remember to balance your fluid intake, particularly if you’re consuming alcohol, to avoid dehydration.
2. Keep Moving: Stay Active to Aid Digestion
The holidays often bring more sitting than usual—whether it’s enjoying a festive meal, catching up with family, or watching your favorite holiday movies. While relaxation is important, too much sitting can slow down digestion and contribute to constipation, bloating, and discomfort.
Take breaks throughout the day to get moving. A brisk walk after meals is one of the best ways to stimulate digestion, promote regular bowel movements, and prevent bloating. If you’re traveling during the holidays, make time for stretching and light exercises to keep things moving and to avoid feeling sluggish.
Incorporating light exercise into your holiday routine doesn’t have to be complicated. A few stretches, a short walk, or even dancing to holiday music can help your body stay active and support healthy digestion.
3. Listen to Your Body: Don’t Hold It In
With all the busyness of the season, it can be tempting to ignore your body’s natural signals. Whether it's the urge to use the bathroom
or simply needing a break from the chaos, holding off on your body’s cues can lead to discomfort or even more serious issues.
When you feel the urge to go, whether it’s to the bathroom or for a quick rest, listen to your body. Ignoring the need to urinate or have a bowel movement can lead to increased discomfort and digestive issues. Delaying bathroom visits can cause bloating, urinary retention, or even more frequent urgency when you finally get to the restroom.
It’s also important to avoid straining when you do go. Sitting in a relaxed position on the toilet, avoiding rushing, and giving yourself time to fully empty your bladder or bowels can help prevent issues like constipation or urinary discomfort.
The holidays don’t have to be a time of digestive or bladder distress. By eating mindfully, staying active, listening to your body, managing stress, and planning ahead during travel, you can keep your bowels and bladder healthy. With a little extra care, you’ll be able to enjoy all the delicious food, festive fun, and precious moments of the season—comfortably and confidently.
Here’s to a merry, healthy, and happy holiday season!
Your Way to a Healthier Smile in 2025!
When it comes to maintaining excellent oral health, there’s no substitute for the classic duo: brushing and flossing. Together, these two simple habits can help prevent a variety of dental issues, from cavities to gum disease, and keep your smile looking its best. But while most people know the importance of brushing, fewer realize just how vital flossing is to overall dental health. Here’s why both are necessary for a clean, healthy mouth.
Why Brushing Alone Isn’t Enough
Brushing your teeth is essential—it helps remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria that accumulate on the surface of your teeth. But here’s the problem: your toothbrush can’t reach the spaces between your teeth, where plaque and food can hide. Remember, every surface of your teeth is important… and this is where flossing comes in.
The Importance of Flossing
Flossing is the most effective way to clean between your teeth and along the gum line, areas that your toothbrush simply can’t reach. The plaque that builds up between your teeth can lead to cavities, which may not be noticed until they cause significant damage. Flossing
helps remove plaque in these tight spaces, keeping your teeth decay-free.
Flossing Reduces Gum Disease Risk: Gum disease, or gingivitis, is caused by bacteria that infect your gums. Flossing helps remove bacteria and plaque from the gum line, and between your teeth, which prevents inflammation, bleeding, and gum disease. Over time, untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss.
Flossing Prevents Bad Breath: Food particles stuck between your teeth can cause bad breath. Regular flossing helps eliminate trapped debris, leaving your breath fresher and your mouth cleaner.
How to Floss Properly
To get the most out of flossing, follow these steps:
Use a good portion of floss; wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving a space in between to work with. Gently slide the floss between your teeth; being careful not to snap or force it, as this can damage your gums.
Curve the floss around each tooth in a C-shape and slide it up and down to remove plaque and food particles.
Don’t forget the back molars, where food often gets stuck and can hide.
Brushing and flossing are the foundation of
a healthy mouth, but don’t forget the other components of good oral care:
Regular Dental Checkups: Even with great home care, it’s important to visit your dentist regularly for a dental clean and checkup, this helps to maintain your oral health and to catch any problems early.
Diet and Hydration: A balanced diet, rich in calcium and vitamins, along with plenty of water, supports your teeth and gums and always remember to stay away from sugary, fizzy or acidic drinks!
Final Thoughts On your Oral Health for 2024/2025
Brushing and flossing are two simple habits that, when done consistently, will lead to a lifetime of healthy smiles. What inspired you to work in home care and community services? Growing up in Dorrigo with my grandparents, I saw firsthand the importance of helping older people stay in their homes safely. My mother, a nurse, was a huge inspiration, showing me the value of compassionate care from a young age.
How has your role evolved at Carexcell? I started as a physiotherapist in aged care and transitioned to a Care Manager role at Carexcell. Now, I guide clients through their home care journey, ensuring they receive the support they need to live independently.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? It’s incredibly fulfilling to help people stay safe and independent in their homes. Seeing clients
continue living their lives on their terms is the greatest reward.
Can you share a memorable client experience? A highlight was helping a client access the right services and equipment so they could enjoy fishing again. Moments like these, where we help people rediscover their passions, are truly special.
What makes Carexcell stand out? Carexcell’s connection to the local community and its personal approach set us apart. We prioritise listening to our clients, tailoring care to their unique needs, and empowering them to remain in control.
How does Carexcell overcome challenges in rural areas? Communication is key. We work closely with providers and coordinate services to ensure even those in remote areas receive the best possible care.
Why should clients choose Carexcell? At Carexcell, we provide more than care; we deliver independence, dignity and meaningful support. From Veterans to NDIS participants, we’re dedicated to improving lives with a personal, community-focused touch.
Birdon's Big Wins
It’s been a successful year of awards and achievements for Birdon. Head of People and Culture Martin Minogue shares some highlights… We’re proud to be recognised as a leader in our region and across the maritime and engineering industries.
Birdon was named Business of the Year in the 2024 Business NSW Mid North Coast Awards. We also won Excellence in International Business and Excellence in Innovation for our HMAS Sirius project.
This decommissioning and disposal of the largest maritime structure in Australia achieved a 99.13% material recovery rate and also earned Birdon awards for Sustainability and Green Economy - Premier’s NSW Export Awards, Sustainability - Asset Management Council’s Excellence Awards, and Outstanding ProjectEngineers Australia Awards.
Birdon was a Finalist in the Defence Connect Australian Defence Awards in the Sovereign Industry Champion category, and our Industry Engagement Manager, Carly Bakes, was longlisted as a Rising Star in the Australian Defence Magazine’s Women in Defence Awards.
These awards reflect the dedication and ingenuity of our team.
Birdon recently unveiled a new brand. What prompted the refresh? Since our first
dredge in Port Macquarie in 1977, we’ve grown significantly, with six locations in Australia, five in the US and projects across Europe and Asia.
Our brand has evolved in alignment with our positioning as a global leader in whole-oflife maritime solutions, including designing, building, maintaining and decommissioning.
The big, bold, impactful brand and abstract propeller icon mirrors Birdon’s maritime ingenuity, as well as our forward movement and future thinking.
We’re still driven by our founder Jim Bruce’s motto, “make it happen”, reflecting our team’s enduring can-do attitude.
Birdon is a global success story and remains Australian-owned and family-run. What keeps you connected to the local community? ‘Family Culture’ is a core value. Just ask Tony Worton, Lift Supervisor who has just celebrated 30 years with us, and whose sons Jacob and Thomas are also part of the team. Tony even has our tagline, “make it happen” tattooed on his chest!
This culture extends to contributing to the communities we work and live in. Port Macquarie is our headquarters and our home. We’re proud to sponsor the Hastings Education Fund, providing students with resources to succeed. We provide Marine Rescue with the fuel for its rescue vessels and our Make It Safe Committee recently donated to the Camden Haven SLSC to fund lifesaving and resuscitation equipment.
We support Australian veterans and their families through the Bravery Trust, providing
financial assistance to members of the
Australian Defence Force.
We’re always finding ways to give back locally and globally, whether sponsoring the local cricket team in Karratha or donating tools to a school near our Alabama shipyard. After such a successful 2024, what’s next for Birdon? We’re exploring growth opportunities in Australia and internationally, reinvesting in our resources and expanding our team.
We’re always looking for passionate people to join us in Port Macquarie, offering opportunities to grow with our 750+ global team. We’re committed to building careers, not just about filling roles. Our Birdon Futures program covers all stages of professional development including work experience, apprentices, paraprofessionals, interns and graduates. The program offers industry training, hands-on experience and professional development. Ricky Lawler began his career at Birdon as an apprentice boilermaker in 2013, following his graduation from Newman College. In 2020, he transitioned to our safety team, and with Birdon’s support, he has successfully completed his Certificate IV, Diploma, and most recently, his Graduate Certificate in Work Health and Safety.

This year, like most years, has had its challenges, but it also reminds me of the incredible strength, resilience, and community spirit that defines our beautiful region. From the beaches to the hinterland, there’s no better place to call home, especially during the festive season.
Christmas is a time to pause and appreciate what matters most: our loved ones, our community, and the places we call home throughout Cowper. While many are feeling the pinch of rising costs, the true magic of this season lies in the simple joys of sharing a meal, creating memories, and spending time with family and friends.
As we head into 2025, I’m committed to continuing to fight for those things that matter most to you. Whether it’s cost of living, housing, access to healthcare, childcare and aged care, roads or local infrastructure, your voice is what guides my work and I encourage you to reach out with your thoughts and ideas.
From my family to yours, have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Thank you for being part of what makes this region so incredible, and I look forward to working for you in the future!
Warm wishes,
AS I REFLECT ON 2024...
As the year draws to a close, I am absolutely blown away by what we’ve achieved together in 2024. This year has been nothing short of remarkable, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering commitment of our Executive Officer, Malcolm Neale, and Executive Officer Assistant, Kylie Morris. Their efforts in refreshing, rebuilding, and enhancing member benefits have been instrumental, and they’ve streamlined their processes to ensure an even better experience for all.
If you haven’t yet explored the new member benefits, I encourage you to arrange a catchup with Malcolm on 0422 562 300—you’ll be glad you did!
Supporting Our Community

• Westpac Rescue Helicopter through our Annual Golf Day fundraiser.
• Luminosity Youth Summit and Nautilus School, bringing industry and students together to explore career paths in trades.
• Make a Difference (MAD), whose volunteers
provided breakfast at one of our events. We also donated ticket sales to help them supply food and beverages to those in need.
• Hastings Education Fund, supporting local students with tertiary education costs.
• Lifeline, through the “Mind Your Mates” event, which brought vital mental health conversations to the business community.
We’re proud to contribute to these initiatives that foster resilience, awareness, and support within our region.
Building Connections
Our monthly coffee catch-ups have been a huge success, offering a casual space to connect with fellow members. A special thanks to Donna and Peter Buckland from Macquarie Waters for sponsoring these events and treating attendees to a coffee!
We’ve also maintained ongoing dialogue with Federal Member Pat Conaghan, State MP Leslie Williams, and local government representatives. We look forward to continuing these valuable conversations, especially with our new Mayor, Adam Roberts.

Melinda Dalton is driven to make a di erence in our community through her passion for holistic and evidence based pharmacy as business partner and Pharmacist of Flynns Beach & Lord Street Pharmacies. Always up for a challenge both personally and professionally, Melinda recently created an architecturally designed forever family home from recycled materials with husband Sam and their three intrepid children. Together the duo have created several successful business ventures all whilst exploring the globe on land and sea. ere is never a dull moment for this multi talented local who combines the best of creativity, adventure and health to achieve the absolute best for her clientele and family.
YMELINDA DALTON
ou have had a longtime passion and affinity with pharmacy and health, particularly with Flynns Beach: working there in university holidays on your trips back from Charles Sturt University Wagga. Is it a full circle moment to be part of the ownership team taking the business to the next level?
Hi Kate, firstly thank you for the opportunity for the chat! Yes, it is a full circle moment for me to now be one of the owners of Flynn's Beach Pharmacy. I grew up competing in nippers’ carnivals on Flynn's Beach and working in the pharmacy in uni holidays. I bought a house around the corner in my early 20's and my 3 children have grown up competing and surfing on this beach as clubbies so it definitely feels like home! My first job as a 15 year old was a junior pharmacy assistant in the Laurieton Pharmacy, where I realised, I could combine my love of science and the human body to make a positive impact on people's health. I have had a varied career in my 20 years of being a pharmacist. Most of my career has been serving as a community pharmacist and home medicines review pharmacist, however I have also experienced life as a hospital pharmacist both in the public and private sectors and as a locum pharmacist when I travelled the country
with the family in our caravan. I have now happily settled in this new role after working at Flynn's Beach Pharmacy for three years before taking the leap in joining the team and bringing some of my passions to life. What inspired the redesign of the branding for the pharmacies and how important has it been transitioning and repositioning the businesses?
I have a passion for design, having just designed and built our forever home on the banks of the Hastings and Maria rivers using as many locally sourced and recycled materials as we could and inspired by designs from our international and Australian adventures. I wanted to continue this vision through to both pharmacies, bringing in my love of natural materials and to make them feel warm, welcoming and professional. Lockdowns and other challenges promoted the design of the new consult room, which in turn, enabled us to offer even more personalised and much needed services. Along with Kyle from Kreative by Kyle Rathbone we designed the new logos to give the pharmacies a fresh update, linking them in design but allowing them to have their differences and unique identities. What were the key ingredients to realising the new vision and when did you know it had truly come to life?
Flynn's Beach Pharmacy has been servicing
the aged care facilities in our region for nearly 30 years, so expanding our services in this sector was a natural progression. My business partners, Sophie and Joe's, knowledge and experience along with Shane's ever present and valued advice and wisdom has ensured we can continue the legacy. The store has had a face lift to bring some of the beachside vibe in and to make it a fun place to work and visit. My interest in natural therapies stems from my kinesiology study way back in 2008 which started my appreciation for nutritional and environmental medicine and treating the body holistically. Bringing locally well-known naturopath Melanie Lock into our team at Lord Street Pharmacy has completed the picture. She shares my vision and combines her extensive naturopathic knowledge with our other incredibly knowledgeable long time pharmacist Noel to be able to offer holistic health care. Bringing together the best of all evidence based therapies to achieve a positive outcome is what drives me professionally, and to be able to bring this to our new look Lord Street store makes me so incredibly proud. Both of our pharmacies are members of the Independent Pharmacies of Australia Group which gives us access to professionals in all aspects of pharmacy and business, whilst allowing us to be independent and follow our own direction.
As both a creative and analytical mind do you subscribe to a firm business plan or follow your gut instinct?
A bit of both. The pharmacy industry is obviously heavily regulated and we have strict guidelines to adhere to, however it is also a very exciting time to be in pharmacy. We have our goals for where we want the pharmacies to be and what we want to achieve. We follow our instincts to be able to remain fluid to the ever changing landscape of health and to take up any opportunities that may present themselves.
What has been your greatest achievement in your business journey so far? Conversely, what was your greatest challenge?
There have been many achievements in the short amount of time I have joined the team as an owner. The refurbishment and rebranding of both pharmacies is up there, along with Sophie taking the reins for our pharmacy to be the first in the area to have onsite aged care pharmacists. However, realising my dream of setting up an integrative pharmacy would be my greatest personal achievement. My greatest challenge would have to be managing my time. My husband and I are close to finishing and realising our dream of building our home with recycled materials (which is very labour intensive!) as well as raising our
myself professionally, continuing to further my education in both the aged care sector as well as in areas that will benefit our local community. Ensuring we continue to improve the functionality, products and services we are able to offer in both pharmacies is always high on my agenda. We have a fantastic team who share our visions and can help us to keep going from strength to strength.
What can we expect next from Sophie, Joe and yourself as you steer the pharmacies into 2025?
2025 will see us having even more pharmacists onsite in the aged care facilities we service, enabling us to supply the missing link to medication management within facilities. Lord Street Pharmacy is currently undergoing NDIS accreditation and we are constantly working on expanding our range of products and services. The government's full scope of practice will continue, allowing credentialed pharmacists to provide enhanced patient care including prescribing medicines for minor ailments and providing medication management for chronic conditions. We are excited to be able to move forward with the changes happening in pharmacy to provide a better service and outcome for our customers. Thanks Melinda.

Being Money Savvy Over the Christmas Period: Strategies for Smart Spending
As the holiday season approaches, so does the pressure to spend. Christmas, with its festive cheer and giftgiving traditions, often leads to overspending, leaving many individuals and families in debt by the time the New Year rolls around. However, with some careful planning and smart strategies, you can navigate the holiday season without breaking the bank. Here are some tips to help you be money savvy this Christmas.
Set a Budget and Stick to It. Before you begin your holiday shopping, create a detailed budget that outlines how much you can afford to spend on gifts, decorations, food and entertainment. Consider all potential expenses, including travel costs if you plan to visit family or friends. Make sure to allocate funds for each category and resist the temptation to go over budget.
Plan Your Gift List Early. Avoid the last-minute rush by planning your gift list well in advance. Make a list of everyone you wish to buy for and decide on a budget for each person. This will help you stay organised and focused while shopping. Consider thoughtful gifts that may not cost much but hold sentimental value, such as homemade treats or personalized items. This not only saves money but also adds a personal touch to your gifts.
Take Advantage of Sales and Discounts. The holiday season is prime time for sales and
discounts. Keep an eye on promotional events such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and other holiday sales. Sign up for newsletters from your favourite retailers to receive notifications about special offers. Additionally, consider using cashback apps or credit cards that offer rewards for purchases. Just be sure to avoid impulse buys during these sales, as the excitement can lead to overspending.
Consider Alternative Gift Options. Gift-giving doesn’t always have to involve purchasing new items. Consider alternative options such as secret Santa, where participants draw names and buy gifts only for one person. This reduces the number of gifts that you need to buy and can make the process more fun and engaging. You could also suggest experiences instead of physical gifts, such as tickets to a concert or a dinner date, which can be more memorable and valuable.
Get Creative with Decorations. Holiday decorations can quickly add up, but you can have a festive home without spending a fortune. Consider DIY projects for decorations using materials you already have at home. Be sure to take advantage of post-Christmas sales on decorations and set yourself up for next year early!
Plan Your Holiday Meals Wisely. Food is a significant part of holiday celebrations but can also strain your budget. Plan your meals in advance and make a shopping list to avoid impulse purchases at the grocery store. Look for
recipes that utilise seasonal ingredients, which are often more affordable. Additionally, consider potluck-style gatherings where each guest brings a dish, reducing the burden on any one person and allowing everyone to contribute to the feast. Keep an Eye on Utility Costs. With the increase in holiday lights and decorations, utility bills can skyrocket during the Christmas season. Be mindful of your energy consumption by using LED lights, which are more energy efficient. Additionally, consider limiting outdoor lighting displays and turning off decorations when they’re not in use. This not only saves money but is also more environmentally friendly.
Reflect on Your Spending Habits & Set yourself up for next year. Finally, take some time to reflect on your spending habits throughout the holiday season. After Christmas, assess what worked and what didn’t. Did you stick to your budget? Were there areas where you overspent? Learning from these experiences can help you make better financial decisions in the coming years.
While Christmas is a time for celebration and joy, it’s crucial to approach it with a money-savvy mindset. By budgeting wisely, planning ahead, and exploring creative alternatives, you can enjoy the holiday season without the stress of financial strain. Remember that the spirit of Christmas lies not in the gifts we give or receive but in the memories we create with our loved ones. Embrace this festive season thoughtfully and enjoy a financially responsible holiday!
Nosy Marketers: Why Curiosity Drives Success
In business, the word “nosy” might raise eyebrows, but for marketers, curiosity is a strength. Strategic nosiness - digging deep into a business’s goals, processes, and challenges - is the secret sauce for crafting marketing strategies that actually drive results. Whether you’re in-house or part of an agency, understanding the big picture ensures your efforts are more than just aesthetically pleasing - they’re purpose-driven and impactful.
Two Types of Clients: Content vs. Collaboration
Let me share a tale of two clients to illustrate this point.
The first was a Head of Marketing at a wellknown brand. Their request? Purely tactical: “We just need blog posts and social media.” We delivered exactly that. But as months passed, it became clear their marketing wasn’t moving the needle. Why? The content, though polished, wasn’t aligned to the broader business goals.
Contrast this with another client—a business without a dedicated marketing team. They came to us for help with everything: refining their sales process, optimising the customer journey, and even adjusting supply chain messaging to reflect product availability. By getting a full picture of their business operations, we developed a marketing strategy aligned with their objectives. The
result? Their revenue grew by 28% in just a year.
The takeaway? If you’re not letting your marketers ask questions and dig into the details, you’re leaving money on the table. Why Nosy Marketers Win
Sales: The Missing Link. Marketing and sales are two sides of the same coin, but too often, they’re disconnected. Forrester found that 65% of professionals report misalignment between sales and marketing. That’s a problem because sales teams know the customer pain points, objections, and motivators that should inform every campaign. Supply Chain. Imagine launching a major campaign for a product that’s out of stock. What a nightmare! By understanding supply chain dynamics, marketers can avoid mismatches between inventory and promotions.
There are several other teams in a business that need to be interrogated by us marketers. If it’s the Business Owner who does it all, being nosy is hyper important because business owners often have an inward perspective, so a nosy marketer can help them identify opportunities (or hurdles).
Holistic Marketing: It’s More Than Pretty Pictures. Marketing is more than just social posts and flashy ads. It’s about aligning with the “why,” “what,” “when,” and “how” of every aspect of a business. Gartner’s research
shows that businesses aligning marketing with broader organisational goals see increased revenue and stronger customer retention. Holistic marketing ensures every campaign contributes to business success.
The Nosy Marketer Advantage. If you’re working with an agency or freelancer, they should be more than content creators and may be missing the mark. A nosy marketer digs into the nitty-gritty of your business, crafting strategies that aren’t just creative but effective.
Final Thoughts. Christmas is Here—Are You Ready? By now, your Christmas campaigns should be well underway. Haven’t launched yet? You’re already playing catch-up. Forrester reports that 75% of holiday shoppers start browsing by November. If you’re in the service or hospitality industry, your holiday gift card promotions should already be in full swing too.
A nosy marketer is a problem-solver! By collaborating with departments across the organisation, marketers can create campaigns that deliver meaningful results. Whether you’re planning your next campaign or preparing for the year ahead, encourage your marketing agency or freelancer to get curious.
Merry Christmas & Stay Safe!

IT’S TIME TO SEND
OUR COMMUNITY INDEPENDENT TO PARLIAMENT
This coming election, we have an exciting opportunity. The electorate of Cowper will decide if this incredible region becomes the next in a series of rural and regional communities that have bucked the century-long trend of Nationals strongholds in regional areas.
After being completely taken for granted as 'safe seats' for decades, community after community across regional Australia have used their vote to bring about what Russell Crowe described as "The rise of Independents" here in Australia - the wave of support behind community backed, and community focused, Independent candidates.
As you may know, Cowper’s Independent candidate, Caz Heise, contested the last election and made history by turning this seat into the most marginal Nationals seat in the country. We’re now the closest community to securing independent representation of any current party-held seat.
I’d like to share some of my own experience with you in the hope that it might inspire you - particularly those of you feeling disengaged or checked out from politics - to see the real change that’s possible with an independent MP. Change begins when we, as a community, decide it’s time.
I've lived in over a dozen different electorates across our three east coast states, from the major cities to small townships of only a couple of hundred people. I served
in the Army, I've worked hospo and I've volunteered a lot of time in community development and food security, amongst other things - I've felt the towns I've lived in at the street level and I've met and talked with all kinds. The difference between the places I've lived has been vast, but nowhere was a community as involved, as listened to, and as well supported as in the areas that had independent representation in parliament. By a long shot.
Community Independents have delivered real outcomes for their towns and cities through grants and funding and they have become the standard bearers for accountability in Canberra. It was a Community Independent that gave us the federal anti-corruption commission and it is Community Independents fighting to end 'Pork Barrelling' now. They fight for transparency, for accountability and for what their electorate and their constituents want and need. And they do so free from the demands of donors, factions, or the ‘party line’.
I have met Caz Heise on several occasions and spoken with her about issues affecting veterans, young people and the state of our healthcare system - an area she knows intimately as a nurse and healthcare administrator - I am deeply encouraged by
her passion, her open mind and her practical determination to bring the voices of this community into the parliament in Canberra. So for those who can see we need change, and especially to those who feel politics is irredeemable, that it’s broken beyond repair no matter who is in charge, I hear you. I’ve felt the same. Optimism in hard times is difficult. But I’ve also had the lived experience of seeing the difference that independent MPs make both locally and to the national conversation.
Early 2025, when it's already polls time again, I strongly encourage you to take an hour to look up who's running, reflect on the needs of our towns, our people and if the voices here are currently being heard and respected in Canberra and take that moment to consider voting independently.
Reach out to Caz’s campaign if you have any ideas or questions. I can say from experience they are genuinely here to listen and to work on behalf of this beautiful community. We are stronger together, and change is in our hands.

REGIONAL SERVICE LEADER CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE, HASTINGS REGION with STEPHEN PARES
Wishing all Families and our Community a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
As the year draws to a close, we take this opportunity to reflect on the blessings of the past year and express our heartfelt gratitude to all the families and community members who make the Catholic Schools of the Hastings a vibrant and nurturing environment. Christmas is a key time in the Catholic Church. It is a time of joy, love, and hope - a season to celebrate faith, family, and the spirit of giving.
We wish each of you a Merry Christmas filled with love, laughter, and the peace of Christ. May your homes be bright with the joy of togetherness, and may the New Year bring prosperity, health, and countless blessings.
A Time for Generosity and Giving Christmas reminds us of the importance of giving—sharing not just material gifts but also kindness, compassion, and time. This season let’s extend our hands to those in need within our community. Whether through donating to local charities, helping a neighbour, or simply offering a listening ear, every act of generosity can make a world of difference.
Encourage your children to participate in giving as well. Teaching them the value of generosity helps nurture empathy and gratitude. From making handmade cards for elderly neighbours
to collecting food for those less fortunate, even the smallest actions can spark joy and hope.
Each of our schools provide hampers for distribution into the community, focusing on supporting the most vulnerable among us. This initiative helps students understand the importance of giving, caring for others, and the profound impact of compassion.
Embracing the Spirit of Community
The Catholic Schools community thrives because of the support and care of families and local organisations.
Gratitude and Hope for the Year Ahead
As we prepare to enter a new year, let’s carry forward the values of faith, kindness, and generosity that make our community so special.
This Christmas let’s strengthen those bonds by coming together as a community. Attend local events, support small businesses, and volunteer at church or school gatherings.
As we prepare to enter a new year, let’s carry forward the values of faith, kindness, and generosity that make our community so special. Together, we can continue to build a future where every child feels supported, inspired, and loved.
We are immensely grateful for the hard work, dedication, and partnership of our families, teachers, and staff throughout the year. Your commitment ensures that our schools remain a place where students grow academically, spiritually, and emotionally. Looking to the year ahead, we are filled with hope and excitement. We will continue to work together to provide the best opportunities for our students, nurturing their talents and guiding them in their journey of faith and learning.
A Final Message
From all of us at the Catholic Schools of the Hastings, we wish you a joyous and peaceful Christmas and a New Year filled with hope and blessings. May you find time to rest, reflect, and connect with loved ones. Stay safe, be generous, and keep the true spirit of Christmas alive in your hearts.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

HArielle Reid
Arielle Reid is an outstanding local high school student who has recently received the Crimson Global Academy 2025 Founder’s Scholarship. CGA is a global online school that will enable Arielle to study an international curriculum that will mean her dreams of going straight on to study Medicine at Oxford University are possible.
i Arielle. Can you tell us a bit about how you first came across Crimson Global Academy and what caught your interest?
When I started high school, I found that the curriculum, particularly in maths, was not challenging me enough. As a result of this, we spent a lot of time searching for interesting alternatives to extending my learning beyond the traditional school curriculum. We discovered Crimson Global Academy online and were immediately impressed with the flexibility of their approach and willingness to let me complete classes at a higher level than my age. This meant I was able to extend myself outside of physical school by attending their part-time classes online. One of the challenges with traditional school is, it is largely driven by your age and the timetabling restrictions of the physical school. The online model eliminates these challenges. It also allows for a much
more STEM focused curriculum which I am particularly interested in.
You recently received the CGA 2025 Founder’s Scholarship, congratulations! Can you tell us what this scholarship means to you and how it supports your academic journey?
Living
The iGCSE and International A-Levels curriculum and unique opportunities that CGA offers is the most direct pathway for me to actually realise my goal of studying at Oxford University. I am incredibly honoured to have received this generous scholarship, as living in a regional town and the financial magnitude of my goals would have made my goals much harder to realise without this scholarship. Living in Port Macquarie and
having access to this international curriculum with the flexibility to study from home is very exciting for me.
You have such a clear goal to become a surgeon and study at Oxford University. When did this dream first start, and what inspired you to pursue this path?
in Port Macquarie and having access to this international curriculum with the flexibility to study from home is very exciting for me.
I can remember wanting to do Medicine since I was 8, as I was well versed in the medical system due to my extensive allergies and my familial connection to the medical profession. Last year (2023) I attended a summer program at Oxford University where I felt such a deep connection to the place and where I participated in the medical science ‘major’. Doing this course only strengthened my interest in medicine, and the more I learned
about medical sciences, the deeper my interest grew in becoming a surgeon. I am particularly interested in studying at Oxford as it is one of the top medical universities in the world, and its history as the oldest university in the world is also fascinating.
Do you have any specific areas of medicine you’re most interested in, or a type of surgery you hope to specialise in?
While I will keep an open mind for the time being, until I learn more, some types of surgery that I am interested in are orthopaedic and trauma surgery. I feel like these fields are very important in restoring people’s quality of life.
During the summer program I attended at Oxford I really enjoyed surgery-related activities like dissection and learning to suture wounds.
We get a lot of focused attention from the teacher, work in small breakouts with the other students and the ‘class’ is free from the distractions of a normal classroom.
You have shared that CGA has been instrumental in helping you access an internationally recognised pathway. What are you most looking forward to about becoming a fulltime CGA student?
One major aspect of CGA I am looking forward to next year is the global community. CGA facilitates connections between a diverse group of people, and getting to be a part of this community even more as a full-time student will be an amazing experience while living in Port Macquarie. I am also looking forward to the classes themselves as they will be more focused, challenging and in line with my aspirations. Another huge aspect that I love about Crimson Global Academy is the much smaller class sizes. In my maths classes with CGA I have found huge benefits in the small group, online setting. Learning online via Zoom is actually very effective with the right teaching approach, which CGA definitely has. We get a lot of focused attention from the teacher, work in small breakouts with the other students and the ‘class’ is free from the distractions of a normal classroom. The extracurricular clubs will also introduce me to opportunities I would have been oblivious of otherwise, for example,
Along with your passion for medicine, you’re also very interested in science and robotics. How do these fields complement your aspirations in medicine?
I’m extremely interested in STEM subjects, and participating in science and robotics competitions has been integral to broadening my horizons. These fields, particularly robotics, complement my aspirations in medicine because my participation has opened up the possibilities of combining my knowledge and advancing medical technology in the future. I am very interested in medical devices and the use of robotics in medicine and surgery. You’ve already achieved impressive results in competitions like the ICAS Science Olympiads and the First Robotics Competition. What have you learned from these experiences? What have been some memorable moments?
I always love testing myself and my knowledge and competitions are a great way to do that. The key thing that I have learned from participating in a range of competitions is to become flexible in my way of thinking.
Most competitions require a different view on the questions or situation than school, and learning to adapt my knowledge and perspective quickly has been challenging but a vital skill. For example, in the First Robotics Competition, I had to quickly learn how to scout out the other teams in their matchesfiguring out their strengths, weaknesses and any useful information for our team to use and improving my approach with each match. What advice would you give to other young students who wish to pursue their dreams (even when the path is not always simple) like you?
The advice I would give is to never give up on your goals, no matter how aspirational they are, because there is always a way. Talk to your school for any support they can give you, open conversations with your parents/guardians/ teachers, look for any sort of extracurricular study (online or physical) that will aid you in your dreams. There are so many pathways, and you can find them when you start to look (Google is your friend!). Lots of people shy away from big goals, and I think that is a real shame, it is incredibly important to dream big! Thanks Arielle.

“Curriculum aligned, school-based arts participation enhances the development
of individual creativity and self-expression, generates new perspectives thereby enhancing empathy and understanding, stimulates innovative thinking, and is linked to improving the wellbeing and life skills of children and young people.” said Bec Washington, Performing Arts Curator.
Bridget Purtill, Regional Gallery Curator added “The Gallery education program’s intention is to explore, expand and dive deeper into these exhibitions... supporting syllabus delivery and content whilst creating a unique and interactive learning experience for our students, teachers and community.”
For many students, the Education @ Glasshouse Program is the only opportunity to experience cultural activities of this calibre. Thanks to the Principal Partner of the Program, Coastline Credit Union, and their Community Foundation Funding, subsidies are directly available to schools to enhance accessibility, grow participation rates and ensures that research based educational outcomes are delivered for a broad cross section of students.

Oh I love Christmas - the music, the smells, the decorations and the cooking but most of all I love shopping for gifts - I love wandering around looking for something different and special for each person on my list each year.
This year we have a range of gifts - Laura Ashley bedding and cushions, Robert Gordon pottery, handmade lampshades with unique fabrics, small artworks by Tasmanian artist Kerry Agius, Zaab cushions and a locally made range of delicious smelling candles, handmade lamp bases or for something extra special we have Armadillo Rugs you could order or simply give a gift voucher. We have really loved having the added homewares in our store this year - to receive the deliveries and unpack the beautiful items has been a highlight. Another highlight this year has been the amazing array of fabrics arriving in our store - the colours and designs have been simply beautiful and the joy it gives us being in store with all these beautiful items every day is just wonderful. If you haven’t been in to see

the variety of fabrics and products we have in store then try to call in next time you’re in Wauchope. Speaking of Wauchope, this little town has had some significant changes this year with the closure of some iconic stores but it is a delight to see the Christmas display in the main street has been continued by Circle of Friends and the empty spaces seem to be all filled again - Wauchope has so many fantastic stores all huddled together for easy shopping along with great cafes - definitely worth visiting. On a personal note our eldest Anna is still in Canada and looking forward to her first white Christmas - we will miss her terribly on Christmas Day but are very excited for her. Our middle daughter Maggie made it through her HSC year and is excited to be heading off to study communications in Newcastle next year - we will have one daughter left at home - Elyse is heading into year 11 and will be adjusting to being the only one left at home. We have had quite a year and just like everyone can’t really understand how the time has flown by so quickly. The year has been incredibly busy most of the time – the range of products we have supplied and installed is
ever growing. Our amazing team have worked together tirelessly to provide exceptional products and service to so many customers across the whole region ranging from Taree up to South West Rocks.
The range of customers has grown considerably this year as well – we are pleased to be working with a lot more real estate agents, builders, developers and commercial customers along with all our retail and residential. We will be closing just before Christmas – somewhere between 20th & 24th December depending on final deliveries and installations and we are re-opening on Monday 13th January - we decided to give everyone an extended break as it has been a pretty hectic year already and now the busiest month upon us. We are incredibly grateful to every customer who has supported us in 2024. We wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all again in 2025. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at Newtons - Robert, Melinda, Amanda, Dot, Sandra, Wendy, Maggie, Monica, Jason, Andrew, Andy, Craig and Lachy xx

HOW TO ARTFULLY MIX WOOD FINISHES.
Ever found yourself scratching your head over how to blend di erent wood finishes in the same room? Don’t worry; you’re not alone! Mixing wood finishes can seem tricky, but with a few savv tips, you’ll be mixing like a pro in no time.
now Your Wood Undertones
First things first: get familiar with the undertones of the woods you’re working with.
Each type— whether it’s mango, teak, blackbutt, oak, or bamboo—has its own unique hue that can swing from warm to cool. For example, oak is known for its warm, golden undertones, while walnut brings in cooler, chocolatey vibes. When you’re choosing wood pieces or finishes, keep those undertones in mind. Sticking to woods with similar undertones can create a seamless look, while contrasting tones can add that extra pop of visual interest.
Create Harmony Through Contrast
While matching wood finishes can give you a polished vibe, don’t shy away from contrast! Pairing dark walnut furniture with lighter oak flooring can create a stunning look that showcases the beauty of each wood type. To keep things from feeling chaotic though, balance out those contrasts with other design elements. Think about introducing textiles—curtains, cushions, throws rugs, or
upholstery—in complementary colours to tie everything together and create a cohesive aesthetic.
Use Rugs as Visual Anchors
Rugs are your secret weapon when mixing wood finishes. They can visually separate different furniture pieces and define spaces within a room. Imagine placing a beautiful rug under a wooden table set on a timber floor; it adds texture and warmth while acting as a buffer between surfaces. When choosing a rug, go for neutral tones or subtle patterns that complement your wood finishes. And remember to pick a size that allows for breathing room between your furniture while still anchoring the space.
Strategic Placement and Layering
Think strategically about how you place and layer your wood finishes. Mixing woods at different heights and across various furniture pieces helps distribute colour and texture throughout the space. For instance, pairing a dark wood coffee table with lighter wood side tables creates balance and harmony.
Don’t forget about smaller wood accents— picture frames, mirrors, or decorative objects can tie different finishes together beautifully.
Lighting Matters
Lighting is key when it comes to showcasing your wood finishes. Natural light can amplify the warmth of your woods, while artificial lighting can shift how colours and textures are perceived. Experiment with different light sources and placements to highlight the beauty of your woods and create an inviting atmosphere. Add some finishing touches like plants, artwork, or metallic accents for contrast and visual intrigue that complements the natural beauty of the wood.
Wrap-Up
Mixing wood finishes in your interior design doesn’t have to be daunting. By understanding undertones, strategically placing your pieces, and incorporating thoughtful design elements like rugs and lighting, you can create a harmonious space that reflects your personal style.
So go ahead—embrace the mix!
THE NATURAL BEAUTY AND RESILIENCE OF TEAK for Outdoor Furniture
When it comes to outdoor furniture, few materials can match the elegance, durability, and timeless appeal of teak. This hardwood has long been a favourite among designers and homeowners alike, especially for those seeking to create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces.
At O P E N H O U S E Furniture, our new range of stunning outdoor reclaimed teak furniture has just landed, and there’s bound to be something that’s an excellent choice for your patio or garden.
The Beauty of Reclaimed Teak
Teak’s natural beauty is one of its most compelling attributes. Its rich, goldenbrown hue adds warmth and sophistication to any outdoor setting. Over time and if left untreated, teak develops a stunning silvery-grey patina, which many nd equally attractive. This aging process does not affect the wood’s integrity but rather enhances its character, making each piece unique.
Teak’s ne grain and smooth texture make it a versatile choice for various design styles, from classic to contemporary. Whether you’re aiming for a rustic look or a sleek modern aesthetic, teak can seamlessly blend into your vision.
Low Maintenance Requirements
Unlike other types of wood that require regular sealing or staining, teak is remarkably low maintenance. Its natural oils protect it from moisture and decay, reducing the need for chemical treatments. To maintain its appearance, occasional cleaning with soap and water is usually suf cient.
Durability That Stands the Test of Time
One of the standout features of teak is its exceptional durability. This hardwood is renowned for its resistance to the elements, making it ideal for outdoor use. Teak contains natural oils that repel water and prevent rot, even in the harshest weather conditions. This inherent quality means that teak furniture can withstand the elements without warping or cracking. Teak’s high density also makes it resistant to pests like termites and other wood-boring insects. This durability ensures that your investment in teak furniture will last for decades with minimal maintenance.
For those who prefer the original golden hue over the aged patina, applying a teak sealer once a year can help preserve its colour. However, this is purely aesthetic and not necessary for the wood’s longevity.
Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness
In today’s environmentally conscious world, sustainability is a crucial consideration when choosing materials. Teak is often sourced from responsibly managed plantations that adhere to strict environmental standards. These practices ensure that teak harvesting does not contribute to deforestation or habitat destruction. Reclaimed teak goes one step further - repurposing existing teak wood in new and inspiring furniture designs.
Versatility in Design
Comfort Meets Functionality
Reclaimed teak furniture combines comfort with functionality, offering an inviting space to relax and unwind outdoors.
Investment Value
While teak furniture may come with a higher initial cost compared to other materials, its long lifespan makes it a worthwhile investment. The durability and timeless appeal of teak mean that you won’t need to replace your outdoor furniture frequently, saving you money in the long run.
Whether you’re furnishing a sprawling garden or a cozy balcony, teak provides an elegant solution that will stand the test of time while enhancing your outdoor living experience.
Reclaimed teak furniture offers versatility in design that few materials can match. From sleek loungers to elegant dining sets, teak can be crafted into a wide range of styles and forms. Its strength allows for intricate designs without compromising structural integrity.
Teak’s adaptability also extends beyond aesthetics; it pairs well with other materials like metal and wicker, allowing you to create a cohesive outdoor living space that re ects your personal style.
At O P E N H O U S E Furniture we have a range of stylish, durable and beautifully designed A-grade reclaimed teak furniture pieces for you to choose from. We have long tables for summer entertaining, bench seats, chairs and smaller coffee tables.
