EDITOR’S LETTER FALL BRINGS all of my favorite holiday traditions: pecan pie baking, friendsgiving, and carving pumpkins. I look forward to sharing these special moments with my friends and family all year long. It’s funny to me how something you do every year has the ability to feel new each time. I’ve always thought that the most beautiful part of marriage is the opportunity to form a new life together filled with traditions, old and new.

Joining your life with someone else’s is very similar to building a house. You weather the storms together, rooted in your love and the traditions that you can build upon. You find joy from learning each other’s customs/traditions (like our Coffee Chat on pg. 27), you break down walls, and rebuild a whole new life together.

Whether you are celebrating your first year of marriage, like Zelle Wiggins on pg. 23, or getting ready to take the next big step together, I hope this issue will remind you that even when everything else may seem stripped away, tradition and the love you have for each other will always be there for you to rely on.

xoxo,

OLD HOMESTEAD FARM Less than a stone’s throw from Wilmington, surrounded by 250-year-old trees and lush green fields, awaits a farm venue unlike any other. Situated on 105 acres, Old Homestead Farm has renovated their 4,300 square ft. horse barn so that you can have the wedding of your dreams!

14

FOTC WEDDINGS

The transformative features of the barn give it the ability to host casual rustic events, as well as more traditionally formal weddings. Convenience is key at Old Homestead Farm and every amenity you might need is there for you. Attached to the barn, a fully furnished bridal suite is available for the bridal party, while a handsomely decorated groom’s suite across from the barn is the perfect place for the groomsmen to get ready. A covered pavilion and sprawling green fields (perfect for tenting) are all at your disposal, as well as ample onsite parking for all of your guests. “I’ve always felt like we were so blessed to live here,” Overby said. “It’s a beautiful property that needs to be shared.” ith the ability to accommodate up to 300 guests and the W option of also having your rehearsal dinner on the property, it’s no wonder the community is buzzing about Old Homestead Farm! Upon entering, you are greeted by stunning spruce walls and knotty pine ceilings that showcase the rustic charm of the repurposed barn. A large stone fireplace and spiral staircase that leads to a balcony overlooking the barn, lend a romantic touch. With options to customize your wedding to your tastes (including a horse drawn carriage that you can use for your grand entrance or romantic exit), owner Margaret Overby knows that the versatile nature of the venue is what makes it such a great space.

“It’s a farm venue that has the elegance to be whatever you can imagine.”

This first year of marriage has flown by and in some ways, it feels like we just got married yesterday, while in others, it seems like we’ve been doing this forever - and in the best possible way.

By the time Stephen and I said, “I do,” last August, we were approaching seven years of dating. We had already been through quite a few highs and lows of life together: college, graduation, the loss

of a beloved grandparent, finding and celebrating our first jobs, moving and settling into careers. On top of that, I opened my own business in September, so by month one of marriage, it seemed like we had been through it all.

Despite being together for quite some time, we took a more traditional route and chose not to live

Our wedding day

together until after we got married, so I’ll never forget how fun that first month was. Of course,

there’s always an adjustment when you add a roommate to the list, especially when it’s a guy, but we’ve found our rhythm for what makes our household work.

I got very lucky in the fact that my husband loves to joke around. I’m very much a type-A person

that lets the little things cause stress, and he has been the balancing factor in my life, especially in this last year. Even in those

moments when I get frustrated with Stephen (because let’s face it, we all get frustrated with our spouses from time to time), he ends up making me laugh and I’ve soon forgotten what upset me in the first place.

The biggest thing I can reflect on from our first year of marriage is that it’s so important to enjoy the blessing that is marriage. It is so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day stress that can easily overcome us, but

life more fun than you could imagine.

ASK AN EXPERT

Katie Lange, owner of Bubbly Events, is the woman behind some of Wilmington’s best-executed weddings. As a self-professed “overorganizer”, Katie has been in the wedding planning business long enough to know the effort it takes to put on a successful wedding weekend, which makes the advice she dispenses below, invaluable.

WH AT M A K E S WE D D I N G T R A D I T I O N S S O S P E C I A L C O M PA R E D T O O T H E R T R A D I T I O N S ? Every wedding is a unique celebration of a couple deciding to join their lives together. They’re exciting and feel like the beginning of something huge – and they are! However, they are also deeply rooted in traditions. Whether they are family heirlooms that are incorporated into the day, or a special reading done during the ceremony that has been read for generations, they are all ways to help your marriage start on a solid foundation of support. WH AT I N T E R E S T S YO U A B O U T WE D D I N G T R A D I T I O N S ? For my own wedding almost ten years ago, I became interested in the meaning behind traditions to see if I wanted to incorporate them into my own day. For my clients, I have had so much fun seeing the sentimental, and sometimes quirky, traditions weave their way into making their wedding uniquely theirs. For example, I was so worried about bad weather on my wedding day that I found an old Catholic tradition (or superstition!) that said I needed to place a statue of the Virgin Mary in my kitchen window. Many southerners believe that burying a bottle of bourbon before the big day holds the same influence.

W H AT A R E Y O U R FAV O R I T E W E D D I N G T R A D I T I O N S ? I think any wedding traditions that involve other people in your big day are really special. You can see what readings were done at your parent’s wedding and use them in yours. In big families, I love when all the cousins give the grandmother a special role to do at each wedding. I love when parents can pass down items from their wedding to use at their children’s weddings; they find a way to use their cake knives or part of an older wedding dress around the bouquet. WH AT A R E S O M E T R A D I T I O N S YO U A R E S E E I N G L E S S O F T H E S E D AY S ? I think people want to make their weddings more about how people feel and less about everything looking identical. Centerpieces can be different, bridesmaids don’t have to match, groomsmen don’t need boutonnieres. Couples are asking what makes the day feel special; how can they make people feel loved and valued which then leads to incorporating family traditions into their wedding and that is such a fun thing to help make happen. H O W C A N O U R R E A D E R S S TA R T T H E I R O W N T R A D I T I O N S ? As you’re diving into wedding planning and booking vendors, start having conversations with other generations about what their weddings were like. Ask them if they kept anything that you could add to your day. When buying items for your own day, buy nice quality items so that you can pass them down or share with people who are important to you later in life.

FOTC WEDDINGS

The cascade bouquet has experienced a resurgence of popularity for the past couple of years. This bride loves flowers and wants an elegant, opulent way to show it on her wedding day. The cascade style is perfect for elongating her look and for a simpler style wedding gown with smooth lines as opposed to a lace skirt.

PERFECT FOR YOUR BLACK TIE AFFAIR . THE POP OF PINK WILL PAIR NICELY WITH A WELL FITTED TUX .

EXPERT OPINION

winter bride

fall bride

For the wistful winter bride who knows her season and style. This lovely bouquet is made in a loose, round design that is just the right size to accent that perfect waistline she’s been working so hard to maintain. The ribbon trails are also perfect for giving a feeling of height to the “not so tall” bride.

For the fall bride, burgundy is one of the most popular bouquet colors. Here, we’ve used burgundy calla lilies and carnations. This ontrend bride gives a nod to her groom by adding in the dark blue delphinium, and a bright white rose to make the entire bouquet “pop”. This trendy, yet traditional style bouquet is sure to complete her fall ensemble.

PLAY OFF THE SILVER NOTES IN THE BOUQUET WITH A GREY SUIT AND TIE . ADD A LITTLE BIT OF FLAIR WITH A POLISHED SET OF CUFFLINKS .

PULL OUT THE DEEP NAVY TONES OF THE ANEMONES WITH A CLASSIC NAVY SUIT . ADD A POP OF COLOR WITH A PATTERNED POCKET SQUARE .

the groom’s cake Written By Kallee Britton

A specialty bakery based in Wilmington, NC, One Belle Bakery will make your groom’s cake one to remember. With attention to even the smallest of details, One Belle Bakery will create a cake that is as unique as your intended! Whether you decide on a delicious dessert composed of his favorite flavors or a creatively shaped cake that shows off his favorite hobby, sports team, or go-to snack, this special treat just for him is sure to be a hit. No matter what you choose, One Belle Bakery will make a cake that is too beautiful to eat… well, almost.

Kate Supa Photography

D

ating back to the Victorian era, groom’s cakes were originally intended for single women to take home

and place under their pillow in hopes of dreaming about their future husbands. Talk about sweet dreams! Today, the groom’s cake is entirely influenced by the groom, representing his tastes and biggest interests and is often presented to the groom during the rehearsal dinner or as a second dessert option on the big day. Want to wow with your groom’s cake? Look no further than One Belle Bakery.

Matt Ray Photography

An n a E c h o ls has been creating cakes since 2007. Six years later, she opened the doors to One Belle Bakery, specializing

in buttercream wedding cakes and groom’s cakes that are so realistic, you’ll question if they are actually edible.

fter meeting over margaritas in Raleigh, NC, Andrea and Michael knew it was meant to be. “We instantly had a connection, to the point where an onlooker (who had several margaritas at this point) asked us when the wedding was and offered to pay for it! Should’ve taken him up on it! From that day on, we hung out almost every day,” Andrea said. After dating for a couple of years and an engagement in Croatia, the couple knew that Bakery 105 in Wilmington, NC would be the perfect venue for their big day. “We absolutely loved the exposed brick inside the Bakery, the courtyard space for cocktail hour, and the Cottage on Orange that my bridal party and I got ready in. The proximity to downtown, and the fact it was close to the river, was perfect!” Andrea explained. Incorporating personal touches in their September, 2017 wedding was a must for Andrea and Michael. Their engagement in Croatia would provide several personal touches on their wedding day, from their lavender infused signature cocktail (a major export in Croatia), to their wedding colors (shades of lavender and purple, timeless black and whites hues, and of course, gold, a nod to the last name they would share “Golder”).

Andrea wanted a relaxed and romantic vibe for their special day, saying, “I had a vision of lots of greenery, candles, and soft lighting. Our décor was minimal as we wanted the focus to be on the food, music, and having a good time. The entire event was a huge party!” Even though they both lived in Raleigh, the happy couple knew that Wilmington would make for the perfect backdrop to their wedding day and as Andrea said, “Pick a location that holds special meaning to you. Michael and I both love being near the water, and Wilmington spoke to us because we used to go to Wrightsville Beach for day trips at least two times a month the first summer we dated. We knew we wanted to be near the water, but not necessarily have a beach wedding, and we fell in love with Wilmington.”

the beautiful couple L i z & N i c k the special day D e c e m b e r 1 , 2 0 1 7 the gorgeous location W r i g h t s v i ll e M a n o r the talented photographer P u r a S o u l P h o t o g r a p h y oth originally from the Northeast, Liz and Nick knew that they wanted their December, 2017 wedding to fully embrace the coastal Southern charm of their new home, Wilmington, NC. Wrightsville Manor was the perfect location for an indoor/outdoor winter wedding that would show off the natural beauty of their beloved beach town. Wanting a casual, but elegant feel for their wedding, the roaring fireplace and chandeliers of Wrightsville Manor were the perfect fit for Liz and Nick. To incorporate personal touches into their big day, the bride wore her mother’s veil during the ceremony and the happy couple shared from their journals, all while a close family friend officiated the wedding. Both avid surfers, Nick’s surfboard acted as the seating chart display, for a fun and playful detail to their day. Incorporating winter hues into the ceremony and reception, the bride and groom opted for bold burgundies, with radiant white and cream tones, while lush greenery provided a fresh touch to their surroundings. Twinkle lights and gorgeous garland added a wintery and romantic vibe to the coastal setting, and a sparkler exit made the perfect ending to Liz and Nick’s perfect day.

lthough Elizabeth and Harrison attended elementary school together, they truly didn’t get to know each other until one fateful day in 2013 at Wrightsville Beach. Sparks flew and a few years later, the couple was happily engaged and ready to plan their big day. For their March, 2018 wedding, the couple fell in love with Wilmington, NC’s Brooklyn Arts Center, saying, “We loved the historic feel and character of the building, and the beautiful details throughout the reception area and bridal suite.” Just as important to Elizabeth and Harrison was the helpful nature of the venue director, Rich. His friendly, solution-oriented approach put everyone at ease throughout the planning process and especially on the day of the wedding. Embracing bold winter tones, Elizabeth envisioned a candle lit and romantic evening wedding with rich purples, greens, and golds with small touches for personalization and flair. The centerpieces were designed by the bride, along with the wooden table runners and name cards, incorporating a handmade element into the reception. White linens were used with contrasting plum-toned napkins and dozens of candles sparkled at each table, while small dishes of pomegranate seeds rested at each place setting to honor the Jewish Faith and represent their love as a newly married couple. While planning a wedding can be demanding, Elizabeth and Harrison kept the stress to a minimum, saying, “The most important part comes during the years after the wedding. Your family and friends are the ones who make your wedding day one of the most memorable days of your life, so enjoy every second of having so many people who care about you in one place.”
