DEAR READERS,

pring has a way of transporting us into a dream-like state of mind. We found ourselves a bit lost in reverie (hence our title My Dear Reverie on page 23) as we spent time oohing and ahhing at romantic spring details, stretching our creative process, and collaborating with some of the most talented folks in our community.

BEHIND THE SCENES Our tummies rumbled as we watched Matt Lennert from Spoonfed

Our vision for Volume 6 began to take shape as we let the meaning of marriage, the beauty of weddings, and the liveliness of spring carry us through each step, keeping us consistently inspired. We fixed our eyes on the subtleties of the season; its color palette, its smells and sounds. From it flowed things like fantastical floral adornments, soft tonal backdrops, a sentimental lovers morning, and oh so much more. I was wowed repeatedly as our team of staff and contributors came together to make magic happen on the set of photoshoots, in hair salons, bakeries, behind computers and everywhere this issue brought us. There is nothing quite like being in a room full of creatives with a common goal. That aspect was most certainly the icing on these 92 pages.

MILNER'S CAFE & CATERING CELEBRATES TEN YEARS

S P O N S O R E D

F E A T U R E

High-end, customized menus and top-notch service are why after ten years Milner's Café & Catering is still a go-to for professional catering with a personal touch. Owner Tara Speth and Chef Mark Milner joined forces as the perfect pairing of culinary skill and personal service. Tara meets with brides and clients to discuss their needs and create specialized menus. Mark makes the magic happen in the kitchen while Milner's professional wait staff keeps everything running smoothly, just like their clients have come to expect. Whether it's table service or buffet style, they make sure their standard is upheld through tireless work and preparation. They cater to the most sophisticated of palates and often get rave reviews long after the event has ended. "That's really what I want to aim for this year is people to know that they're going to get quality, handcrafted menus and food with a professional service staff," Tara said.

professional staff. Over the years, they have it down to a science so everything runs smoothly. "The thing that we get comments on most is just the team we have," Mark said. "It looks good in front of the customer when you've got a good team that knows what they're doing, that is efficient, and that stay out of your way. They make the event about you. And then we pride ourselves on doing a good event that is seamless. That's what our staff gives and that's what our business has been able to do. " In addition to running a tight operation, Mark believes in hard work and consistency and just putting love in what they do. That love is what drives him and the Milner's team to excellence. "The art of cooking or the skill of cooking is really an important thing and honoring it," Mark said. "It's just a love of cooking."

On your special day, Milner's doesn't double book and you know you will always get Mark as your chef and their

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND A WEDDING DESIGN CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE, such as an element from nature, a swatch of fabric, a destination that you have traveled, or simply a color palette or mood that you hope to evoke. For this year’s Courtyards & Cobblestones event, a Gucci © print inspired our vibrant, whimsical, garden design. When deciding the various design elements, some details were inspired concepts while others translated literally.

· A lattice pattern was incorporated in various applications from the greenery installations throughout the space to small details in the china, candle holders and table linens. · Lush, whimsical floral designs and graphic installations were added throughout the space to evoke a garden feel. The end result was an unforgettable design and experience that all started with a simple print. Contact Design Perfection and let’s discuss the inspiration behind your wedding design.

With a dinner by the water, you can't go wrong with seared salmon on farro salad studded with roasted sweet potatoes, cauliflower, kale and red onion. After a night of clinking champagne flutes and heartwarming toasts, take a stroll on the dock as the sun goes down. Let all the elements work together for truly enchanting evening.

For this occasion, everywhere you look is an inspiration in picturesque coastal North Carolina from the muted colors to the live oak trees. Owner Kate Thompson, shares her wedding hair tips: 1

Schedule a bridal trial with your stylist two months before the big day. This allows you and the stylist to come up with a plan to get the perfect look that best suits you. You can even line it up with your bridal portraits, because you will already be camera ready.

2

Share with your stylist pictures of looks that inspire you. Many brides are asking for braids, soft updos and relaxed half-up styles. You can order hair extensions that perfectly match your hair if want a style with fuller, longer hair. Don't forget to think about bridal accessories like veils, crowns and flowers.

3

In the months leading up to your wedding, get regular conditioning treatments. When your hair is healthy, it has more shine and manageability. Keratin treatments can do wonders for your hair with results lasting months, especially during the summer months with humidity being a factor.

4

Avoid making dramatic changes to your hair leading up to the wedding. You want to feel and look your best on your big day. Changing your color or cut could lead to you not feeling like yourself. This also lets you avoid any unnecessary stress if you did not like the outcome.

5

Scheduling a blowout for your rehearsal dinner is a great idea. You'll have beautiful hair that night and you're prepped for wedding day style the next day!

Q/A WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR CREDIT WHEN YOU GET MARRIED? Nothing happens to your credit until you start co-mingling credit trade lines. Basically, any credit trade lines that are in one spouse's name will remain on that credit report unless the spouse is added to the account. Once new trade lines are added to the report as co-signed loans, such as a mortgage, then these items will start to report credit history to both. IN TERMS OF CREDIT AND FINANCIAL PLANNING, WHAT SHOULD FUTURE SPOUSES BE TALKING ABOUT AS THEY APPROACH MARRIAGE? Have a plan. It is important to sit down and discuss your earnings, monthly obligations, and/or debts, then begin outlining your goals. Consider your timeline for buying a home, potential renovation expenses and other expectations. Dive into the details of your financial outlook by laying out your financial priorities with one another. WHAT STEPS CAN COUPLES TAKE POST-WEDDING TO GET THEIR CREDIT SCORES ON THE RIGHT TRACK? You should start addressing credit scores as soon as possible, even before marriage. Especially when it comes to home buying, I urge my clients to call me 6-12 months ahead of time so we can pull credit and begin mortgage planning. The sooner we look into the initial report, the better chance we can put the couple in the best possible position.

ADAM.SLACK@RATE.COM RATE.COM/ADAMSLACK 910.473.5087

HOW CAN CREDIT SCORES AFFECT THE MORTGAGE PROCESS AND FINANCING?

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR NEWLYWEDS OR SOON-TO-BE MARRIED COUPLES ABOUT PROTECTING THEIR FINANCES? Newlyweds often make large purchases on a credit card. This is one of the worst things you can do as 30% of your score is made up of credit utilization. This will have a huge impact on the credit score where a personal installment loan could have been used for these purchases and would not affect the credit negatively.

Spring/Summer 2019

S P O N S O R E D

F E A T U R E

Credit is one of the single most important pieces of the mortgage process. If your score is too low, you may not qualify at all. If you have no credit, you may be able to get a mortgage but will have a high interest rate and the cost of your loan will be “priced out.” If you are in the top tier for credit, you can take advantage of the most beneficial financing options.

Avoid common financial errors by talking to someone to see where you currently are in your financial picture. Remember having the knowledge of what to do and what not to do can make a world of difference.

ichael was living in Austin, Texas, with a few roommates when one night, over beers, Michael described his dream girl. When

his roommate heard his description, he immediately thought of Kathryn. In spite of the long distance — Kathryn was already a Wilmy local — the two were set up later that year and began their story. Sure enough, Michael and Kathryn hit it off. After many hourlong phone calls, surprise visits, grand gestures and sentimental moments, Michael proposed to Kathryn on October 13, 2017, on the south end of Wrightsville Beach in the same spot he first told Kathryn he loved her. Preproposal, Michael made a special trip to visit Kathryn’s grandmother in the hospital where he shared his plans to

aroline and Casey met through friends in Wilmington in 2013. Four years later, Casey surprised Caroline at the Thanksgiving dinner table with a heartfelt proposal surrounded by family. Following a

life-changing experience and time of healing at Operation Restored Warrior, Casey knew he was ready to spend the rest of his life with Caroline. Out of eagerness and excitement to tie the knot, the two made plans for the wedding of their dreams six months later.

With the theme of elegance, St. James Parish was the perfect ceremony spot. The arches and historic beauty were the ideal backdrop for her cathedral veil and strapless gown with silk buttons down the back. She held a bouquet of light pink roses and peonies to honor her beloved grandmothers. "I was ready, honestly, for the ceremony to be over because I was so nervous," Caroline said. "I was ready for the party to begin."

Caroline always envisioned having a black tie wedding set in the evening. "I love to dress up and I just wanted a dress up wedding," she said. "I love a six o'clock wedding. I think it's fun and I feel like everyone should get dressed up like that every once in a while."

Designs by Dillion was behind the helm of the florals. He fully understood and achieved her aesthetic. Men in tuxedos, women in cocktail dresses and a black and white dance floor at the Country Club of Landfall made her upscale dream a reality. The band Gentlemen & their Lady kept the guests dancing all night long. Caroline and Casey waved their goodbyes and decided they weren't quite ready for the party to be over. They went back out to finish the night at a bar with their friends. "I wish I could do it all over again. It flew by," she said. "I felt like it was seven o'clock when our wedding ended. I did not want it to end!" by Jennifer Ray

met in 2011 sitting next to each other at their jobs at Live Oak Bank in Wilmington. What started out as

friends led to two hearts becoming one on April 7, 2018, in a ceremony that was all their own.

A maritime setting seemed only fitting with their love of boats that was even incorporated into their proposal. Jason surprised Kate with a gorgeous princess-cut ring he designed himself after a boat ride to Masonboro Island on summer solstice. "I know he said something incredibly beautiful," she said. crying because I can't believe it's actually happening."

Jason was just as involved in the planning as Kate. She wanted a small wedding and he wanted a bit more. They joined their visions and knew Carolina Yacht Club was the perfect setting for their 108 guests. "We just tried to keep it as low key as we could," Kate said. "We didn't want a big wedding. We were really thoughtful on our guest list and what we wanted from the experience, which was a party but with all of our intimate family and friends."

Kate said she put the designing and planning into the hands of Kickstand Events, who ran with a vision that was relaxed and beachy like them. The planners utilized muted colors and floral arrangements and pulled in the wooden hues of the Yacht Club. Many aspects were trademark Kate and Jason details, like the individual key lime pies by Sly's Key Lime Pies, funny pictures of guests for their seating chart, the Hank Sauce Cilanktro hot sauce on the tables and a disco ball. After dancing all night, they even invited the guests to go from the reception to The Palm Room on Wrightsville Beach to enjoy '90s rock band Just Yesterday.
