from the editor
As we trade beach days for cozy evenings, the refreshing nip of fall air sifting through our coastal town isn’t the only change upon us. Shifting our priorities from summer fun to family gatherings, we’re reminded of the abundant joy that fall brings. When we started planning the fall/winter issue of FOTC Weddings, I asked our staff to come up with an intention. The word “abundance” reigned supreme. I wanted this issue to be filled with more: more connection, more purpose, and more inspiration. From the “Save Room for Dessert” feature on page 37, to the wild and decadent florals in our “Winter Vows” feature on page 29 we sought to explore the opulence and prosperity that only this time of year can bring. This is the season for living in your favorite oversized sweater, adding copious amounts of whipped cream on top of your morning coffee, and overcrowding your table with friends and family, so embrace the “more” in your life and in the pages to come. You may be facing many exciting challenges as you transition into this new phase of life filled with shared names and joint checking accounts. I hope the ideas you find within these pages help make all of those changes a little easier. Cheers to the first day of a life together, a day that’s rich in love and abundance.
Until next time,

A mix of Spanish and English, the phrase is a reminder “to continue to travel and give back.” Embodying the spirit they live by, Pura Soul is also a homage to the countless transformative and powerful experiences the two shared when they first fell in love. Pulling inspiration from their travels, the couple employs a natural, documentary style of shooting to capture the true essence of the day. “When shooting a wedding, we always take time to photograph the landscape and surroundings. Our clients and couples love to use these images as artwork in their homes knowing it was captured on their special day.” Sky and Devin also donate a portion of the proceeds from their online fine-art print shop to benefit charities. Pura Soul prides themselves on being an experienced team comprised of two first shooters. “We complement each other greatly while shooting a wedding. Devin may climb a tree or hop on a roof to get the shot while I style the invitation suite and arrange bouquets.” They often find themselves dancing right alongside the bride and groom in order to accurately capture the contagious energy of the night. Pura Soul Photography’s incredible talent and infectious positive energy are a welcome addition to any wedding. HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR
wedding venue

written by: becky starkey
1
When you close your eyes and imagine your wedding, what do you see? If you’re looking for an elegant hotel wedding with a rooftop reception, a country barn isn’t going to cut it. If you know what you want and aren’t sure where to find it, proceed to step two. CO N S I D ER YO U R V I S I O N

A wedding planner will be familiar with all of the venues in your desired area, their capabilities, and their limitations. This insider knowledge will make your decision much easier.

Think about your guests and your personal expectations. Some venues require parties to provide transportation, clean-up the night of, and want you out by a certain time. Finding a venue that realistically matches your wedding’s needs is essential to the perfect day. 14
FOTC WEDDINGS
4
Once you have created your final list of options, determine how much each venue will cost. Include additional expenses like tables and chairs or transportation. These are costs that add up quickly if you’re not prepared. R EM EM B ER YO U R B U D G E T
5
H AV E A R A I N P L A N Even if your entire wedding is indoors, rain can still be a nuisance. Ask your venue what their rain plan is; if one doesn’t exist, it’s up to you to figure out plan B. Whether it’s making sure you have extra umbrellas or tents ready to go, preparing for rain is the best way to ensure it doesn’t ruin the party.
6
CO N S U LT YO U R G U ES T LI S T You want your wedding guests to be comfortable. Instead of asking what a venue’s capacity is, ask how many people they can comfortably accommodate with your vision. You may be surprised to find that these numbers are different.

Your home is your sanctuary. A perfect combination of your experiences and tastes, it’s also where you tend to your relationship on a daily basis. You learn all of the little nuances about each other that come with living together. You figure out who doesn’t mind peeling vegetables and who is in charge of taking the dog out early in the morning. A large part of marriage is choosing to go through a daily routine with another person. It’s those small gestures of love that make your relationship especially unique, so why not capture those everyday moments? In-home engagement sessions are a great alternative to a more traditional engagement shoot. You get to know your photographer and get your first taste of being in front of the camera, all in the comfort of your own home. Incorporating your everyday activities into the session will help you feel more at ease in front of the camera. Remember to keep it casual. There’s no need to go out and buy new decor to zhush up your home. Wear your cozy clothes, gather your pets together, and get comfortable. Whether you drink coffee together every morning before work, or perhaps you gather on the porch for an afternoon beer, embrace the ordinary moments and take advantage of the space where you show that love for each other every day, in its most genuine form.

We don’t just send a price sheet. We like to get to know our couples and get to know their stories. We’ve been doing this for awhile now, which means we have a good working relationship with a lot of people in town. Our style goes together well with certain people, so a lot of times a wedding planner will call us and say, “Hey, we have a couple that we think you’d really like to work with,” and everything comes together really well.

Dana Laymon is a boudoir photographer for the girl next door. A lifelong photography enthusiast, Dana left her corporate life behind years ago to pursue her natural talent. In that time, she’s established herself as one of Wilmington’s leading boudoir photographers and founded Wilmington Weddings and Events, the ultimate guide to getting married in Wilmington. Many brides today are opting to do a boudoir session as a gift for their husband-to-be. Read her advice on choosing the right boudoir photographer for you below!
w h at s t y l e d o y o u wa n t t o p r o j e c t ?
is hair and makeup included?
Do you want soft and romantic? Bold and sexy? While the outfits you choose are important, the way your images look will ultimately be dependent on the photographer that you select. Every photographer has a style that they specialize in. This style should be evident on their website or in the work they send you.
Not always. Most photographers have you arrange your own hair and makeup before you get to the photo session. I always include hair and makeup for my clients. I also take care of scheduling the hair and makeup artist and allow all of this to be done at my studio as a part of your session.
w h e r e w i l l t h e s e s s i o n ta k e p l a c e ?
will they post my images anywhere?
The location of the session will also play into the look and feel of your images. Most importantly, you should always feel completely at ease and safe during a session. Ask photographers if they have a studio, if they’ll be shooting in your home or if you’re expected to rent a hotel room. Sometimes the expense of a hotel is an additional cost that you’re expected to pay for, but it also may be included in the price of your session.
Does the photographer blog their sessions, post them to an online gallery, or share them on social media? It’s important to know what their privacy policy is and what they do with their clients’ images. Make it very clear what you’re comfortable with and it’s a good idea to get it in writing. I don’t use my client’s images unless I have their permission in writing, and even then, where I share them is very limited.

1
How would you describe your photography style?
Light and airy. I always try to shoot in the most flattering light possible because it makes everything look better. Your skin looks better and flaws are hidden. It’s amazing.
2
What’s your advice for brides or grooms who feel camera shy?
A lot of people think they look awkward. My whole job is to make you feel natural and comfortable in front of the camera. I don’t want you to feel like you’re posing. I talk to my couples the whole time I’m shooting. It’s a very interactive process. I promise it’s not going to be awkward.
3
Should couples always opt for an engagement shoot?
4
What should a bride wear to an engagement shoot?
They’re a great way to get to know your wedding photographer, which helps take away some of the nerves on your wedding day.
I always give all my brides an outfit guide that includes hair and makeup recommendations. Wear something that you can move in. 40
FOTC WEDDINGS
5
How far in advance should a bride book a photographer?
6
What should brides keep in mind regarding day-of timelines?
7
What’s your turnaround time?
As soon as you book your venue, I would start looking for a photographer. A good rule of thumb is at least a year before the event.
Everyone always wants sunset pictures, but you need to start your ceremony two hours before sunset to get those pictures. It’s easier in the summer months, but people don’t always take that into consideration when it starts to get dark earlier.
I try to get a sneak peek up in a blog post within a week and return the full gallery typically within about six weeks. Engagement sessions usually take about two weeks. A wedding is one of the rare occasions when all of your family and friends gather together for a joyous event. The ceremony and reception may form the backbone of a wedding weekend, but everyone knows the festivities start as soon as guests begin to arrive. While the guests get to soak in the whole experience, the bride and groom tend to miss some of the details while making the rounds on their big day. Extend your wedding weekend with a Sunday brunch, and end the weekend on a high note surrounded by your closest friends. At first thought, the idea of adding another event to your agenda may sound like a lot to plan. The good news is a casual morningafter brunch with an open door policy can actually be quite simple to arrange. Everybody and their mother loves brunch, and after partying the night away, a belly full of food is most welcome. While you and your new spouse sip mimosas or Bloody Marys, you can share stories from the night before as family and friends drift in and out, saying their goodbyes.

M U S I C F O R YO U R W E D D I N G B R U N C H The wedding is over and you’ve traded your formal wear for lazy Saturday attire. Grab your nearest and dearest for a laid back brunch. To make the event even more low stress, I have picked out my favorite songs to entertain to. Access my playlist by scanning the QR code below!
Although a wedding gift is considered optional in certain circles, we think it’s in good taste to personally acknowledge the bride and groom with a gift, whether large or small. They have spent
countless hours preparing a party for family and friends. While your presence at the wedding is most certainly enjoyed, if you can give a gift that lasts a lifetime, your thoughtfulness will be enjoyed by the couple for years to come.
Remember, gifts don’t have to be expensive to be meaningful Sometimes it can be a simple kitchen gadget that the couple didn’t even know they needed, or a piece of art to hang in their entryway, commemorating their wedding
day. Think about the couple. What do they value? What do they use? What do they like to do? Fine china might not be the most meaningful gift for people that love outdoor adventures, but for those that throw dinner parties, it’s perfect!
If you’re close to the bride and/or groom, some thoughtful pondering will lead you to the right gift. If you’re still feeling stumped, we’ve compiled some suggestions from wedding experts on the gifts that stand the test of time.

Zelle + Stephen the beautiful couple Z e l l e & S t e p h e n W i g g i n s the special day A u g u s t 5 , 2 0 1 6 the gorgeous location R i v e r L a n d i n g the talented photographer K a t e S u p a P h o t o g r a p h y
hen Zelle and Stephen began planning their wedding, she knew she wanted everything to be classic and timeless. “I’ve always loved blush tones and neutrals. Between the gorgeous cabbage roses, peonies, and greenery, beautiful champagne bridesmaid dresses, classic tuxes, and simple decor, the vision turned out exactly as I had hoped.” Choosing River Landing as their venue “was probably the easiest decision of the wedding planning process,” said Zelle. “I grew up there when I was younger, have family there and worked there at the time, so it was a no brainer.” With suites for the wedding party and a golf course, the venue ensured a stress-free weekend. Working in different touches that represented the couple and their relationship was important to Zelle. Stephen’s uncle acted as the officiant and to signify the joining of their families, the couple had two different crests created for ceremony programs, koozies, cocktail napkins, and other items. One of Zelle’s favorite moments actually occurred during the rehearsal. “I recreated my mom’s wedding gown into a cocktail dress to wear for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, and I absolutely loved having that as a tribute to my mom and dad’s wedding.” The next day, Zelle and Stephen were married at a romantic church ceremony. She remembers walking out the church doors and looking at Stephen. “Both of us just said ‘We’re married!’ It was such a surreal moment with just the two of us. We had just said I do in front of our friends and family and after seven years of dating, we were finally husband and wife.”

s a local wedding photographer, Erin Taylor is well versed in the many styles of weddings, but when it came time to plan her own, she did not want a formal affair. In an effort to avoid many of the elements that place the bride and groom at the center of the event (admittedly a hard feat to pull off ), Erin and Josh’s main concern was ensuring their family and friends had a great time.
Even though the two attended the same high school, it wasn’t until 12 years later that they reconnected. Their first date was hanging out on Erin’s front porch in Pittsburgh, her pug Oscar chaperoning.
“We only did toasts, our first dance (“Stay Alive” by Jose Gonzalez) and parent dances. This gave us more time to interact with our guests instead of our guests watching us do things.”
So in lieu of wedding gifts, the couple asked guests to contribute funds to causes the two value, such as the Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue and the Yellowstone National Bear Box Program. Colorado, once their former home, holds a special place in the couples’ hearts, so rocks native to the Rocky Mountains were used to fill glass candle boxes. Farm tables represented Josh’s PA dairy farm upbringing: Nye’s Ice Cream Sandwiches were for the Taylor family, and a southern dinner menu embraced their now NC home.
Erin and Josh also incorporated elements from each part of their lives into their Atrium wedding in an effort to inject meaning into every bit of the event.
“Being surrounded by that kind of support, love, and friendship all day really overwhelmed us in the greatest way possible. It made the whole day the happiest moment” said Erin.

hen Hannah and Grey Littlewood were searching for their venue, Hannah knew they wanted something unique that we could make our own. “We didn’t want something that had been done before.” Eschewing the search for a traditional wedding venue, the two transformed an old boat warehouse owned by Hannah’s family. Located on the Intracoastal Waterway, “It ended up being the perfect place for us,” Hannah said. “I wanted glamour and tradition mixed with rustic dark woods and romantic soft draperies. I did not have a wedding color, which so many people ask about. I only wanted to incorporate neutral whites and natural greenery.” This beautiful backdrop set the scene for treasured moments. Hannah fondly remembers putting on her wedding dress with help from her mother and sister, and Grey laughs about his impromptu performance with his father and brother on the reception stage. Throughout the event, the family had plenty of fun, but tradition was also honored. “Every woman in my family has had their wedding cake served on the same silver service tray which is pretty amazing,” said Hannah, who also wore “a gold plated hair piece, made with lace from my grandmother’s wedding dress.” After reciting their vows in front of friends and family, the couple swayed across the dance floor to Etta James’ “At Last,” a song Hannah says makes her tear up now more than ever. When asked what advice she’d give a bride-to-be, she said, “Don’t stress about things you cannot control. At the end of the day, it is about the marriage you are about to go into with the person holding your hand on the day of your wedding, and nothing else.” For Hannah and Grey, life is now like a song.

lthough Trishia and Oliver practically grew up together in Wilmington, their paths never crossed until 2014 when they were officially introduced by mutual friends. “From that point forward,” said Trishia, “we couldn’t get enough of each other.” A little over a year later, while vacationing in Asheville, Oliver dropped his knee to the ground of the beautiful Biltmore estate and asked Trishia to be his wife. When planning their wedding, Trishia aimed for a classic fall wedding with romantic, bohemian accents. Wrightsville Manor helped set the scene perfectly. “When I first saw the location, it was still under construction, but I could see their vision and dedication to the project,” said Trishia. With both indoor and outdoor options, Wrightsville Manor allowed the couple to have the free-flowing event they envisioned.
Trishia said the indoor area, with its “exposed brick, fireplace, and chandeliers, provided the perfect ambiance for our fall wedding.” Getting married in November, the couple was wary of the weather. When the wedding day arrived, it was gorgeous, warm and the sun set on them as they said their “I do’s.” From a vintage sitting area provided by Relic Vintage Rentals, to flowing florals by Blossom Bay Designs, the reception did not disappoint. But it was the people who made the day. “One of my favorite memories was having all of the people we love celebrating our special day with us. I would advise any bride to remember to enjoy the day. We made sure to take a few moments to step away and take in the moment together. It was awesome to see our loved ones in one venue celebrating together!”
