EDITOR’S LETTER

DEAR READER, Welcome to Volume IV of Focus on the Coast Weddings! I am thrilled to share this labor of love with you. Working on a magazine shares many parallels with planning a wedding. Like you, we are spending months making sure that we are picking the best vendors and details to bring a vision to life. When we started organizing this issue in September, it became apparent that our focus should be on the creative energy that goes into a well-executed wedding. I wanted to take a peek behind the curtain and highlight all of the individuals that put their heart and soul into making your wedding day memorable. Whether it was the full scale flower wall that Design Perfection brought to life on the cover, or the intricate detail of the gowns that One Belle Bakery reimagined into cakes (pg. 17), I am constantly in awe of the talented people that call Wilmington home. At the end of the day, collaboration makes us all better, and marriage is the greatest collaboration of all.

Until next time,

ASK AN EXPERT

PIECE OF CAKE Anna Echols has been creating cakes since 2007. Six years later, she opened the doors to One Belle Bakery, specializing in buttercream wedding cakes and three dimensional groom cakes that are so realistic you’ll question if they are actually edible. We sat down with Anna while the oven was preheating and she answered our most pressing questions about wedding desserts.

What is the most important thing to know when scheduling a tasting?

How far before the wedding should you order your cake?

Come prepared! Know what kind of cake and/or dessert bar you and your partner would like to have at your wedding. That way we can use our time to design the perfect sweets display for you. Bring any items that could be helpful during the design process such as color swatches, flower choices, or wedding dress fabric. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, let us know when you schedule your appointment!

March-June and September-November are our busiest months of the year. If you’re getting married during one of those months, I would recommend booking as far in advance as possible. With that being said, your actual cake consultation can be one of your “last” design appointments, since so many other details from your florist, rental company, etc., might need to be considered when designing your cake.

What is your favorite option for a dessert bar besides cake?

fondant vs. buttercream

Dessert bars are a great way to offer lots of other delicious sweets to your guests. I recommend going with a table full of several different desserts, because it looks so much more appealing than a table with just two options on it. We can help you come up with an array of sweet options that coordinates with the theme of your décor.

Most people prefer the look of fondant, but want the taste of buttercream. We try to give you the best of both worlds. We specialize in getting our buttercream to look as smooth as fondant. We typically only suggest completely covering your cake in fondant if you’re having an outdoor July wedding, where the heat will likely melt the buttercream.

Looking for a fun and creative way to celebrate your first year of marriage? Paper has always been the traditional gift of choice for couples. While love letters never go out of style, I recommend stepping outside of your box with a boudoir photo shoot. It is a great reminder that, after your first year of life together, your connection to each other is still what matters most.

My clients typically come over two weeks after their session for their photo reveal, where we pop some bubbly and look over their amazing images. That way, you get to see everything in person, along with all of your images, and leave the reveal with your gift built and ready to order. The best part of every present listed above is that all of the options are paper!

BRIDES FOR THEIR BIG DAY.

LISALRICCI@GMAIL.COM

It is a massive understatement to say a bride wants to look flawless on her wedding day. Between getting enough sleep, the countless hours spent sweating at barre classes or begrudgingly foregoing that last piece of cheese pizza, a day as life-changing as her wedding day can inspire a bride to work hard to present the best version of herself: her true self radiating beauty in every way.

According to Ricci, Botox® is best used in the upper face region of the nasal bridge up to the forehead, as well as the eye and temple areas. Filler is mostly used on the bottom half of the face including the mouth, lip, and cheek areas. She recommends that brides interested in trying any of her procedures do so around six to eight months prior to their big day.

Lisa Ricci of Beauty and the Beach offers brides subtle beauty enhancing procedures with the convenience of on-location appointments, if needed. Her expertise lies in the areas of lash extensions, Botox®, and fillers. In addition to owning her own business and being certified to administer Botox® and fillers, Ricci is also a licensed PA-C. Her medical background gives her a unique perspective on facial anatomy, as well as quality of application without the high cost of a plastic surgeon. When it comes to Botox®, Lisa aims to use the products in a way that makes her clients look as though they have gotten three days of solid sleep. Their look is beautifully rejuvenated. She said, “The emerging market [for Botox® and fillers] is girls in their twenties, and it is used more as a preventative measure. Ricci evaluates each bride determining from which product she would get the most benefit. “I tend to be more conservative with new clients,” she said. “For brides especially, it is so important for them to have confidence in what they are having done.”

Ricci also offers lash extensions, which in her opinion, “are one of the most cost efficient, quickest ways to brighten your appearance and change your overall look before your wedding. For special occasions they are a game changer, and a must-have for your wedding,” said Ricci. Some brides opt for strip lashes on their wedding day, but Ricci noted that extensions give a more natural enhancement to the appearance and their longevity makes them worth every penny. “It is more of a subtle change, but they make a huge difference. They will typically last through the wedding and honeymoon.” Ricci takes appointments at her in-home studio. She also offers onlocation appointments for clients as well as parties for groups interested in trying her services. “These parties are perfect for a bride and her pals prior to the big day,” noted Ricci. old, something new. Something borrowed and something blue. It’s the age-old adage about wedding day necessities, and as a Southern gal to the core, something I knew I would incorporate into our wedding day. Not long after Stephen and I were engaged, I found my something new: a gorgeous wedding dress that was more than I could have dreamed of. And though I loved my new dress that I would walk down the aisle in, I knew I wanted to incorporate tradition into our wedding. So, I asked my mom what she thought about me wearing her wedding dress for our rehearsal dinner. She was thrilled that I even asked, so we immediately started brainstorming ideas for how we could make it my own for the eve of my wedding. I tried it on for my mom and dad and we reminisced about their own wedding day while I daydreamed of mine. As the months inched closer, I started looking for a style of dress that was modern enough for our rehearsal dinner, but that would also be representative of what my mom wore the day she married my dad. Her dress was a floor length two-piece ensemble, with a pleated skirt and high neck lace top.

To make it my own, we met with our talented seamstress and decided to create an open-back look with a short skirt, keeping both pieces as part of the final look. In addition, we made the front v-neck, and added a thin belt to redefine the waist. Throughout the fittings, I kept wondering whether or not my vision would come to life, but at my last fitting with my matron of honor in tow, it finally came to fruition. On the afternoon before our wedding, I slipped into my “new” dress before heading to practice our “I do’s” and felt a mixture of emotions, including the nostalgia of wearing something my mom once wore. Though shopping for my own wedding dress was an experience I will never forget, creating a special one-of-a-kind piece out of my mom’s dress is truly something I will always treasure. I also loved watching my mom share with rehearsal dinner guests that the dress I was wearing was once hers. I got my something old, borrowed, and a little bit new - all in one.

hen reflecting on meeting each other, Nick quoted one of his favorite sitcoms saying, “You only need two things to meet the person of your dreams: chemistry and timing.” Shepherd and Nick both grew up in Wilmington, NC, but somehow didn’t meet until their mid-twenties. Having spent numerous Easter Sundays at Airlie Gardens, paired with the romantic rendezvous the couple enjoyed there prior to the wedding, made the venue a sentimental necessity for Shepherd. “Closer to our engagement, we would go on dates in the garden and we ended up spending a lot of time falling in love there. It was a must to have a small ceremony in our favorite garden!” Nick and Shepherd wanted to make sure that all of their details felt intentional and true to the pair as a couple. Opting for an extended wedding day that included an intimate early afternoon ceremony followed by a larger party that night allowed the couple to soak in every moment of their special day.

fter mulling over several locations for their wedding venue, Taina and Justin knew that his family’s beach house in Wilmington, NC would make the perfect backdrop for both their ceremony and reception. “We loved the idea of having a venue that would be uniquely ours, and we were excited by the idea of customizing every aspect of our wedding to fit our personalities,” says Taina. Just as they were sure about each other, Taina and Justin were certain of how they wanted their September wedding to look. Inspired by his love for James Bond and her passion for reading, Taina and Justin added special touches to make their big day one that their guests would never forget. From arriving at the ceremony in style on a jet ski, to the white tuxedo jacket and signature red carnation, Justin emulated everything James Bond. Embracing Taina’s love of literature, the bridesmaids carried book clutches down the aisle for a unique twist on traditional bouquets. Family was a large part of the program and read passages during the ceremony to provide advice for the years ahead. Lastly, the guests showered the bride and groom with flower petals and well wishes for their ceremony exit! Jewel-toned blooms in reds, peaches, purples, and creams joined bright greenery to lend a lavish feel to their reception. To honor Taina’s roots, a four-tiered tres leches cake and Dominican inspired wedding desserts were made with love by Taina’s aunt. The couple opted for a cocktail camper for their favorite boozy beverages and a snow cone bar to help guests beat the summer heat. Once the evening got cooler, a s’mores fire pit provided a playful twist to the elegant, garden party atmosphere. After dancing the night away and a radiant sparkler exit, the couple concluded the evening surrounded by family and friends at a local bar with late-night burgers. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

manda and Blake met one fateful night in downtown Raleigh, NC over a beverage and smooth guitar music. The rest is history! Choosing Wilmington for their wedding was a piece of cake for Amanda. “Wilmington is such a gorgeous destination for a wedding. I also grew up in Wilmington, and being close to family was a natural fit. The Country Club of Landfall provided the perfect venue for indoors and out, plus their staff was incredible.” Instead of giving in to the stresses that come with planning such an important event, Amanda let her team of carefully chosen vendors do what they do best! “I tried to focus mostly on staying calm in the midst of what can be a very hectic planning process, and find a brilliant team to execute. Design Perfection led the way. I had a vision in my mind of what I dreamed of and they somehow brought it to life and exceeded my expectations.”

With attention to even the smallest of details, Amanda and Blake wanted their June wedding to be as special as their love for one another. Soft pinks, pops of coral, and stunning red florals paired with lush greenery made their venue even more romantic. The combination of dazzling chandeliers and soft candlelight created a dreamy atmosphere for their guests to celebrate the couple’s commitment to one another. Taking the lyrics from their first dance song (“For The Love of You” by The Isley Brothers) to heart, it’s clear that Amanda and Blake truly believe, “All we’ll need is candlelight and a song.” Carrying their musical beginning into their wedding day, Amanda cited dancing and singing on stage with the band, Liquid Pleasure, as being one of her most cherished memories; although, picking her favorite memory wasn’t so easy, and it’s clear to see why! “I enjoyed absolutely every detail from the flowers, the breathtaking décor of the ballroom, to the cheers from the crowd after we said ‘I do.’”
