Antonette Mendes, passed away at 79 on April 7th, 2024. She was renowned for her contributions to K o n k a n i f i l m s a n d T i a t r production.

Antonette Mendes, born Maria Antonia D'Souza on May 10, 1944,

in the Bombay Presidency of British India, was the eldest daughter of tiatrist Andre Antonio D'Souza, a sailor, and well-known figure in the theatrical realm and his wife, Innocencia D'Souza. She began her career as a vocalist at the age of 15 in her father's theatrical production

“Aum to Tarvotti.” The tiatr “Fuddar” by playwright Kid Boxer marked a significant turning point in her career. She toured various places with tiatr troupes, including East Africa, Canada, Germany, London, Dubai, Muscat, and Doha.

In the Konkani film “Nirmon” in 1966, directed by A. Salam, her melodious portrayal of Claudia captivated audiences' hearts. On the film set, she met her spouse, Romeo Mendes, also known as the star of Assnora. They married and had three children: Judy, June, and Lara.

During the pandemic, she c o n t r a c t e d C OV I D - 1 9 b u t managed to recover, although she required supplemental oxygen support during her recuperation.

As Goans, let us salute her immense contribution. She acted in Konkani films such as “Amchem Noxib” and “Nirmonn” and also

appeared in a Hindi film, “Mohabbat Zindagi Hai.” Her efforts and contributions to the industry earned her many accolades, including the Goa State Cultural Award 2015 conferred upon her by the Goa government, as well as the Lifetime Achievement in Tiatr Award 2009 by the Tiatr Academy Goa.

Two of her songs, “Piti piti” and “Claudia,” are among the most popular, evoking nostalgia for Goans of all generations. These songs are often part of Goan celebrations such as weddings and birthdays, and many Goans enjoy listening to them in their leisure time.

Om shanti to Madam Antonette Mendes, a memorable figure who won the hearts of many Goans and beyond. The Konkani legacy she created has left an indelible mark on Goan history, culture, and the music industry.

RED DEVILS FC CLINCH VICTORY IN INAUGURAL DON BOSCO FUTSAL CUP

Goa's inaugural Don Bosco Futsal Cup, organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports in collaboration with the Health and Fitness Club, took place on April 8, 2024. Six teams competed: Night Hawks FC, Gladiators FC, Rising Panthers, Narcos FC, Red Devils FC, and Peaky Blinders FC. Each team consisted of a minimum of 12 players, including three female players, emphasizing gender inclusivity. The league showcased equal opportunities for both male and female players to excel on the Don Bosco Artificial Turf, with each team playing ten matches, ensuring that at least two female players

were on the field on both sides for every match.

competition starting from February 14th, Red Devils FC emerged as the l e a g u e c h a m p i o n s , c l o s e l y followed by Peaky Blinders, securing their spot in the semifinals. The remaining teams battled it out in knockout matches, with the victors earning the last two positions in the semi-finals. The final showdown saw Red Devils FC facing off against Peaky Blinders FC once more, reminiscent of their opening clash. This time, however, the outcome was reversed Hanslum Furtado's two

goals propelled Red Devils to victory, while Sevon Costa's lone goal wasn't enough to secure the win for Peaky Blinders. Red Devils triumphed as both the Futsal League and Futsal Cup champions, with Peaky Blinders as runners-up in both competitions.

From the serene village of Assagao nestled in northern Goa, Mr. Rajkumar Kamat's family ventured to the bustling capital city in pursuit of opportunities and a brighter future. Despite the move, their ancestral home remains a cherished gathering place for festive celebrations like Ganesh Chaturthi. Hailing from the esteemed Kamat Budkule lineage, Mr. Kamat faced numerous challenges on his path to becoming a renowned businessman, a prominent figure in society, and a captivating speaker who holds sway over the masses.

Today, he stands tall as the Chairman and Managing Director of EP Kamat Group, a stalwart in the business l a n d s c a p e o f G o a Additionally, Mr Kamat occupies prestigious positions within BNI Goa, exemplifying his leadership prowess. His j o u r n e y , f r o m h u m b l e beginnings to a position of influence, serves as an i n s p i r i n g n a r r a t i v e o f perseverance and triumph.

I've known Mr Kamat since 1992 when he managed a thriving powder coating plant in Bicholim Industrial Estate. Even then, he exuded humility and remained grounded a trait that endures to this day despite his immense success in garnering name, fame, and fortune. When I broached the idea of an interview, he initially hesitated, citing shyness

H o w e v e r , a f t e r s o m e conversation, he graciously agreed to proceed.

During our discussion, Mr. Kamat offered a candid glimpse into his background and struggles. "As I grew up, I realized that our family didn't inherit wealth," he reflected. "Our path to prosperity r e q u i r e d s t a r t i n g f r o m scratch." He recounted how his father, skilled in radio repair, could have excelled in h i s B u s i n e s s h a d circumstances been different. However, his father's frequent travels to Mumbai for Mr Kamat's medical care, related to a life threatening disease coupled with mounting debts

f r o m h o s p i t a l i z a t i o n s , restricted their livelihood to a hand-to-mouth existence. Yet, despite these challenges, Mr. Kamat's father shielded the children from the harsh realities of life, prioritizing t h e i r w e l l - b e i n g a n d education above all else.

T h r o u g h M r K a m a t ' s recollections, it's evident that his upbringing instilled in him a profound appreciation for perseverance and familial sacrifice, shaping him into the c o m p a s s i o n a t e a n d determined individual he is today.

“My mother is a remarkably enterprising woman, " Mr. Kamat fondly acknowledges. "She is a giver & possesses a talent for bringing people together which she does even now at the age of 87— a trait I believe I've inherited from her. On the other hand, I've inherited my father's strong work ethic. The success I enjoy today is a testament to their teachings and sacrifices.” As far as Business journey is concerned my wife Leena has been a steadfast companion & pillar of support throughout the journey.

Mr. Kamat's family relocated to Panaji well before his birth, and he has since called the capital city his home. His formative years, including p r i m a r y a n d s e c o n d a r y education, unfolded within Panaji's vibrant landscape “We resided in the vicinity of what is now Caculo Mall," he r e m i n i s c e s . " M y e a r l y education commenced at Mushtifund School and had a one year stint in Margao under my uncle’s tutelage, before I transitioned to Don Bosco’s for my secondary schooling Later, I pursued my higher secondary education at Dhempe College. In those days, the choice of school largely depended on its proximity to one's residence.”

As Mr. Kamat hints at further stories behind his chosen path of Engineering, it's clear that each twist and turn in his journey holds valuable lessons in perseverance, adaptability,

and the guiding influence of mentors.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Mr. Kamat immersed himself in sports, particularly cricket, during his college years “I represented the college in Chess, Table Tennis, and Cricket," he reminisces with a hint of nostalgia. "Those were carefree days filled with tournaments and matches Interestingly, cricket often took precedence even during exam periods, with the fear of injury looming as I balanced between playing matches and tackling exams.”

However, a pivotal moment occurred during a campus interview when Mr Kamat found himself stumped by a simple yet profound question about his life goals. “It was a wake-up call," he reflects. "That moment sparked serious contemplation about my career path, igniting the entrepreneurial spirit within me. But I recognized that such a j o u r n e y r e q u i r e d preparation, so I resolved to gain practical experience by joining a company for a period of two to three years. Narrowing down his options, Mr. Kamat sought a role in a s m a l l o r m e d i u m - s i z e d enterprise where he could start from the ground up and immerse himself in the workings of a burgeoning company. “Among the offers on the table, ACGL stood out as the perfect fit," he explains.

"As a Tata Enterprise, ACGL which he joined in 1981 offered n o t o n l y t h e h a n d s - o n experience I sought but also a strong emphasis on employee training Additionally, the opportunity to directly report to the Managing Director provided invaluable insights and mentorship a true treasure trove of wisdom.”

In hindsight, Mr Kamat acknowledges ACGL as the c o r n e r s t o n e o f h i s professional journey, laying the groundwork for his subsequent achievements Through his experiences at ACGL, he honed his skills, gained invaluable mentorship, and embarked on a trajectory that would eventually lead him to the pinnacle of success.

"After two years at ACGL, I began planning my venture," he shares "The booming d e m a n d f o r a l u m i n u m structures, particularly in construction, presented a ripe opportunity Initial market studies revealed a demand for a n o d i z i n g a l o n g s i d e fabrication, which led us to s t r a t e g i z e a p h a s e d approach, starting with f a b r i c a t i o n a n d l a t e r incorporating an anodizing unit."

In 1985, Mr Kamat and his brother sought advice from their cousin, Mr. Suresh Kamat, F o u n d e r o f K a m a t Constructions business, who advised patience until their younger brother could join the endeavor "In 1986, our youngest brother initiated a small aluminum fabrication unit in Verem, marking the genesis of Alpro Industries," Mr. Kamat recounts. Soon after, in 1989 anodising unit was set up by his brother at Bicholim.

According to Mr. Kamat, his i n v o l v e m e n t i n p i v o t a l meetings regarding ACGL's collaborations began in 1986, extending through 1988 when the company embarked on expanding its operations into bus body building. "I played a key role in negotiations with Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) Japan," he recalls. "At the age of just 28, I was representing T a t a ( A C G L G o a ) i n

discussions with the Japanese c o m p a n y a s i g n i f i c a n t exposure during my early career."

The culmination of these negotiations resulted in a collaboration agreement signed in 1988, for bus body building with production commencing the following year. However, Mr. Kamat's entrepreneurial spirit was brewing simultaneously.

At the Bicholim unit of aluminum fabrication and anodizing faced challenges due to delays in orders from AC G L , c o m p o u n d e d b y escalating loan interests and labor union issues, Mr. Kamat's brother Dinesh found himself overwhelmed "Seeing my brother under immense stress, my father urged me to step in and support him," Mr. Kamat recounts. "I made the decision to resign from my position at ACGL where he was guiding efforts of 400 workmen & 80 Engineers and together with my brother, we pivoted towards establishing a powder coating unit—a more environmentally friendly process."

In 1991, EP Industries entered a n e w c h a p t e r w i t h t h e inception of the powder coating unit, marking a fresh start devoid of previous setbacks. "Taking the helm, I steered EP Industries with a clear vision," Mr Kamat affirms. The acronym "EP" symbolizes "Engineered Products," reflecting their commitment to quality and innovation.

With the real estate boom in Goa during the late 1990s, EP Industries diversified into manufacturing gates and railings to meet the growing demand "We embraced metal railings as a sustainable

alternative to wooden ones," Mr. Kamat explains. "This shift n o t o n l y c a t e r e d t o environmental concerns but a l s o o f f e r e d e n h a n c e d durability."

B y 2 0 0 3 , E P I n d u s t r i e s ventured into producing fiberglass reinforced plastic ( F R P ) d o o r s , r e p l a c i n g traditional wooden doors in the construction sector. "Our journey was marked by a dedication to environmentally friendly products," Mr. Kamat reflects. "This ethos led to the establishment of EP Group, where 'EP' signifies both 'Engineered Products' and

"Attending a BNI meeting, I realized that this networking platform was exactly what Goa needed," he recalls. Upon returning home, he wasted no time in reaching out to the national director of BNI, sparking a dialogue about bringing BNI to Goa.

educated officers Among these transformations, the Information and Publicity department in Goa stands out, h a v i n g u n d e r g o n e a significant evolution. Those who have visited the region

recently can attest to a noticeable shift in staff approach, work efficiency, and overall discipline, with much of the credit rightfully attributed to Mr. Dipak Bandekar, the Director of the Information Department. The Incredible Goa team had the privilege of meeting with Mr. Bandekar to delve into his recent responsibilities and forthcoming plans.

Embarking on his career journey as a Sales Tax Officer in 1996, Mr Bandekar has traversed a remarkable path to his current role as Director of Information and Publicity. "I commenced my professional odyssey back in 1996 as a Sales Ta x O f f i c e r w i t h i n t h e Government Department," he recalled, elaborating on his ascent through the ranks Following his promotion to civil

services in 2003, he seized opportunities to collaborate across various departments

"Throughout my twenty-sevenyear tenure, the lion's share of my career approximately twenty years—was dedicated to the taxation domain." As a Goa Civil Service officer, he

This enabled us to swiftly share information online and proved invaluable during the Covid period, allowing us to disseminate positive updates through social media channels." Discussing the transformation p r o c e s s w i t h i n t h e department, Mr Bandekar emphasized the pivotal role of motivation "Motivating

Bandekar highlighted the previous sluggishness in the process. "Previously, files would languish in transit, as there was little urgency," he recalled "Upon assuming leadership, I observed these inefficiencies and began rectifying them by guiding s t a f f t o a d o p t a m o r e proactive approach, thereby enhancing efficiency I encouraged regular followups at each stage, and if n

anniversary celebration."

N o t a b l y , p r i o r t o M r Bandekar's appointment, the department did not have a presence on social media "Recognizing the importance o f d i g i t a l o u t r e a c h , I personally initiated the establishment of a Social M e d i a c e l l w i t h i n t h e department," he disclosed " S e c u r i n g g o v e r n m e n t approval, we recruited

individuals in the right manner proved instrumental in our transformation journey," he affirmed "The motivational suggestions I offered were earnestly embraced by the majority of the staff, although w e c a n n o t c o m p l e t e l y e l i m i n a t e i n s t a n c e s o f inefficiency However, such occurrences are minimal."

Illustrating this with a simple example of file movement within the department, Mr.

intervened to expedite matters. While I cannot claim perfection, I am committed to continuous improvement."

Mr. Bandekar noted that the Chief Minister conducts periodic review meetings to ensure the department operates at peak efficiency. "We are actively striving to r e c r u i t s k i l l e d a n d knowledgeable individuals," he stated "Traditionally, recruitment has been limited

t o c e r t a i n l e v e l s , w i t h subsequent promotions However, we are poised to change this paradigm by introducing quotas for the d i r e c t r e c r u i t m e n t o f experienced individuals. This infusion of fresh talent promises new ideas and experiences, and plans for implementation are currently underway."

Addressing plans to relocate

the office premises to a more conducive location, Mr Bandekar revealed intentions to move to Porvorim. "While this transition will take time as the construction of the new premises is ongoing, it aligns with our need for enhanced facilities," he explained. "We recognize the necessity for amenities like a larger, wellequipped conference room Meanwhile, we ' ve sought

approval for renovating and redesigning our current space through GIDC. However, this p r o c e s s w i l l t a k e approximately a year, and finding alternate space in the i n t e r i m h a s p r o v e n challenging. Consequently, we've opted for the Porvorim location, where we'll be allocated a more spacious a n d m o d e r n o f f i c e environment. Though it will require patience, this move will serve as a permanent relocation."

Detailing the benefits of the new premises, Mr. Bandekar highlighted increased office s p a c e c o u p l e d w i t h dedicated facilities for journalists. "The new setup will offer expanded office space, along with amenities tailored for journalists, including a dedicated area equipped with internet access and computers. This will enable them to utilize the premises effectively for their work," he added.

"My mother, Lucia Valadares, was a prominent member of the renowned Valadares Sisters, renowned for their captivating renditions of Western music spanning Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and more, " he explained. "Accompanied by the late Dr. E l o y G o m e s , t h e i r performances left an indelible mark on Goa's cultural landscape."

"In contrast, my father, Sigmund de Souza, wears m u l t i p l e h a t s a s a n accomplished editor of the Goa Messenger, a dedicated activist, and a talented singersongwriter," Keanu continued. "His repertoire encompasses the rich tapestry of Goan, folk, and Retro music."

Despite his early exposure to music, Keanu's personal journey into the realm of

p e r f o r m a n c e u n f o l d e d gradually, catalyzed by the unforeseen circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 "As the pandemic swept across the globe, my father's need for assistance reignited my connection to music," he recounted. "From setting up sound systems to providing backing vocals, and e v e n t u a l l y m a s t e r i n g percussions and keyboard accompaniments, my journey towards versatility and expression on stage began." Through this transformative experience, Keanu emerged as a multifaceted artist, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation, and carving his own unique niche in the vibrant landscape of music. rooted in emotion," he revealed. He understood that coercion could breed resentment, hindering my artistic growth."

"Despite these challenges, I embraced my identity as a late bloomer, finding solace in the belief that my artistic journey would unfold organically," he reflected. is erected beside the statue, offering small vessels of coconut oil for purchase. Devotees line up to honor the Saibinn by pouring coconut oil over her statue. THE BEST WAY TO TRAIN TO IMPROVE MUSCULAR ENDURANCE

Muscular endurance refers to how long muscles can sustain exercise. Improving muscular endurance can help enhance overall health and fitness.

WHAT IS MUSCULAR ENDURANCE?

Muscular endurance is the ability to continue contracting a muscle, or group of muscles, against resistance, such as weights or body weight, over a period of time.Increasing the performance of these muscles means they can continue to contract and work against these forces Greater muscular endurance allows a p e r s o n t o c o m p l e t e m o r e repetitions of an exercise, for example, pushups or squats.

ENDURANCE TRAINING

According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the benefits of muscle endurance include:

Ÿ improving the ability to carry out daily functional activities, such as lifting heavy items

HOW TO MEASURE MUSCULAR ENDURANCE

M u s c u l a r e

r a n c e t e s t s measure how many repetitions of a movement people can do before the muscles reach a state of fatigue and cannot continue the exercise Many tests focus on measuring upper and lower body muscle endurance by measuring how many pushups, squats, or situps people can achieve.

A person can work with fitness instructors to measure muscular endurance or record how many repetitions of a particular exercise they can perform before reaching the fatigue state.

HOW TO IMPROVE ENDURANCE

To increase muscular endurance, ACE recommend a combination of lower and upper body exercises, with strengthening exercises to target the whole body.

1. Moderate resistance training, with short intervals in between for rest, creates short bursts of tension

to build strength.

2. Circuit or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be a suitable way to combine cardio and strength training into one workout.

ENDURANCE

When training to improve muscular endurance, what matters most is not the type of exercise, but how p e o p l e d e s i g n t h e i r workout.People should take into consideration the following when tailoring a workout to boost muscular endurance:

1. The number of reps

2. The weight or resistant force on the muscles

3. The number of sets

4. Length or rest periods

According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association, individuals training for muscular endurance should aim to complete three or more sets of 15 or more exercise reps with a load that is 50% or less of their one rep max (RM).A person's one rep max (RM) is the maximum load with which a person can complete one repetition of an exercise For example, a person may wish to use the leg press machine at the gym to build endurance in the legs.

If they have an RM of 100 kgs, they should aim to perform 2–4 sets of 15 or more reps with a load of 100 kgs or less, with brief rest periods between sets.

As their muscular endurance for this exercise increases, they may wish to make the exercise more challenging by reducing rest times between sets, or increasing the reps per set, rather than increasing the load weight.

A person can apply the same principle of high rep and set volume, low–moderate load, and short rest periods to any exercise, such as bench presses, dumbbell curls, pushups, or squats.

EXAMPLE OF EXERCISES

As I have already mentioned, there are no specific exercises that are better for training muscular endurance than others. The design of a training program makes it suitable for endurance training. However, ACE .recommends the following exercises for building muscular endurance, which a

person can perform at home without equipment:

PUSHUP

A pushup works the triceps, chest, and shoulder muscles.

A person can also work the tricep muscles more by placing their hands close together and turn them inward, so the fingers and thumbs form a diamond shape.

To make the exercise easier, a person can place their hands on a bench or other stable, raised surface.

People can also modify a push up by placing the knees on the floor to make it easier, or lift one leg off the floor to make it more difficult.

SQUAT

A squat works the glutes, calves, quads, and core muscles.

ABDOMINAL CRUNCH

An abdominal crunch works the abdominal muscles:

LUNGE

A lunge works the abs, buttocks, hips, and thighs:

PLANK

A plank works the core and back muscles.

If the person is a beginner, hold for 30 seconds, rest for around 1 minute in between Repeat the plank at least three times.

A person can modify this exercise by resting on the forearms instead of the palms if they find it challenging to hold the plank position with straight arms.

PREVENTING INJURY: while working out you have to ensure to prevent injury, here are few tips to prevent injury during a workout:

1. warming up with dynamic stretches before exercising, for at least 5 minutes

2. making sure to maintain proper posture and technique, and c o n s u l t i n g w i t h a f i t n e s s professional if unsure of these 3 exhaling during movements requiring more effort and inhaling on easier parts of the exercise

4. resting certain muscle groups at least 24 hours after working them out

5. cooling down and stretching after exercise

6. stopping physical activity if ill or injured

INTRODUCTION TO ESG REPORTING IN INDIA - PART II

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting has gained significant importance in the Indian context, with the introduction of the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) framework. This framework is currently mandated for the top 1000 listed companies in India by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), but it will play a crucial role in enhancing transparency and accountability in non-financial reporting not only in the above 1000 listed companies but also amongst the step-down suppliers and customers of these entities. We will explore the key aspects of ESG reporting in India, including the BRSR framework, regulatory updates, and the evolving trends i n E S G r e p o r t i n g B y understanding these aspects, companies in India can better navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with ESG reporting and position themselves as responsible corporate citizens in the global marketplace.

The BRSR framework in India is guided by nine key principles that aim to steer companies towards c o n d u c t i n g b u s i n e s s i n a responsible, sustainable, and ethical manner Below are the principles outlined in the BRSR framework along with a brief explanation of each and the expected reporting:

Principle 6: Businesses should respect and make efforts to protect and restore the environment. Companies are expected to report details such as total energy consumption through renewable energy and non-renewable energy, Water withdrawal by source (surface water, ground water, sea water etc), details of a i r e m i s s i o n s i n c l u d i n g Greenhouse gas emissions by the entity, waste management infrastructure and practices.

Principle 7: Businesses, when engaging in influencing public and regulatory policy, should do so in a manner

t h a t i s r e s p o n s i b l e a n d transparent

Companies are expected to report details such as affiliations w i t h t r a d e a n d i n d u s t r y chambers/ associations,Reach of trade and industry chambers/ a s s o c i a t i o n s p u b l i c p o l i c y positions advocated.

Principle 8:

Businesses should promote inclusive growth and equitable development.

Companies are expected to report details such asSocial Impact Assessments (SIA) of projects undertaken, ongoing Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R), Percentage of input material sourced from local suppliers and neigbouring areas, a n d M S M E s , e x i s t e n c e o r a b s e n c e o f p r e f e r e n t i a l procurement policy where you give preference to purchase from s u p p l i e r s c o m p r i s i n g marginalized /vulnerable groups

Principle 9: Businesses should engage with and provide value to their consumers in a responsible manner.

Companies are expected to report details such mechanisms in place to receive and respond to consumer complaints and feedback, instances of product recalls on account of safety issues ( v o l u n t a r y a n d f o r c e d ) , framework/ policy on cyber security and risks, corrective actions taken or underway on issues relating to advertising, and delivery of essential services By adhering to these principles outlined in the BRSR framework, companies can demonstrate their commitment to responsible business conduct, sustainability p r a c t i c e s , a n d e t h i c a l governance. The reporting requirements associated with each principle aim to enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability within businesses operating in India.

Various companies have already made substantial pledges in this direction: 1. TCS plans to reduce its

a b s o l u t e g r e e n h o u s e g a s emissions by 70% by 2025

2. Ambuja Cement targets to reuse 13.5 million tonnes of waste and save 77 litre/t cem of water by 2030

3. L&T aims at water neutrality by 2035

4. Mahindra and Mahindra has project Hariyali to plant 5 million trees by 2040

5. Apple's 2030 carbon neutral pledge covers not only itself but also all its suppliers

The targets such as above, especially when extended to the entire value chain, will certainly disrupt the way businesses operate in certain sectors. Now, besides cost, quality and other normal parameters, large players will also see the ESG credentials of suppliers.

W h i l e i m p l e m e n t i n g E S G measures by themselves will be a huge challenge, the second wave of issues will surface when these efforts have to be measured, recorded, reported, anaylsed and audited. The data capturing capabilities of entities will have to expand substantially to satisfy the myriad facts and statistics required by the BRSR framework. Slowly but surely, entities in India will have to embrace the ESG change!
