every small effort contributes t o a l a r g e r , p o s i t i v e transformation.
In Goa, we are blessed to live in a land of unparalleled b e a u t y , c u l t u r e , a n d community. As the editor of Incredible Goa, I often see h o w o u r c h o i c e s , b o t h individual and collective, shape the society we live in.
What if we resolved to not just better ourselves but also the world around us? From supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs to preserving our natural resources, our actions can leave a lasting impact.
As we stand at the threshold of a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the year gone by—the choices we made, the moments we cherished, and the opportunities we missed. This introspection is often accompanied by the tradition o f m a k i n g N e w Ye a r ’ s resolutions. These resolutions represent our hopes and aspirations for a better version of ourselves—a life marked by growth, fulfilment, and purpose. Yet, how often do these resolutions remain unfulfilled, tucked away as mere good intentions? The truth is, we live in a world where resolutions are often fleeting. Each year, we resolve to change something, only to find ourselves making the same promises year after year. What if we approached this differently? Imagine a world where we not only made resolutions but diligently f o l l o w e d t h r o u g h o n them where each small c o m m i t m e n t b e c a m e a stepping stone toward a more meaningful and impactful life. The secret lies in consistency. It’s not about setting lofty, unachievable goals but about focusing on small, sustainable changes. A resolution doesn’t have to wait for the clock to strike midnight on December 31. Each day presents an opportunity to reset, realign, and recommit Whether it’s dedicating 15 minutes to a new skill, adopting healthier habits, or practising kindness,
This New Year, let’s reimagine resolutions not as grandiose promises but as ongoing commitments. Start by asking yourself: What is one thing I can do today that will make my l i f e o r s o m e o n e else’s better? Celebrate progress, not perfection. It’s these small, consistent steps that ultimately define the quality of our lives and the world we create.
As we move into 2025, let’s embrace each day with renewed purpose. Together, we can make each passing year, and each moment, count—creating a life and a society we are proud of Here’s to a year of meaningful resolutions and lasting change. Until next time happy reading...

Fuelling Growth with Grit and Innovation FROM GOA TO GLOBAL
Sachin Rane, a dynamic entrepreneur and the driving force behind a thriving conglomerate of businesses in Goa, has made an indelible mark in industries ranging from consumer goods to branded cafes, not just within the state but across the country. Despite his remarkable success, Sachin’s journey is deeply rooted in humility and values passed down from his modest upbringing.
Born into a middle-class family, Sachin’s father served as a police constable, diligently supporting his immediate family and his siblings. These early experiences instilled in Sachin a profound sense of responsibility and togetherness, which he continues to honor by embracing the traditional joint family lifestyle, even as many have transitioned to nuclear setups. From these humble beginnings to establishing a multi-crore business empire, Sachin’s story is a testament to resilience, vision, and staying grounded. His inspiring journey serves as a beacon of hope and determination, encouraging future generations to dream big while
to be self-reliant and build my own business," Sachin revealed. Witnessing his father’s struggles left a profound impact on him. "I was clear that I wanted to ensure my family would never face such hardships again My vision was straightforward: I was going to set up my own business."
Sachin’s entrepreneurial spirit emerged early, starting at the age of 15 when he was in 9th grade. Determined to earn his own pocket money, he resolved not to rely on financial support from home "I decided that I would work to earn my pocket money, " he recounted From taking up odd jobs to spotting business
staying true to their roots.
Sachin Rane attributes much of his success to the values and ethics imparted by his late father, who passed away a couple of years ago. Reflecting on his father's enduring influence, Sachin shared, "I lost my father about a year and a half ago, but he remains a role model for me and my family. His actions and work ethic have deeply inspired me. " This guiding inspiration shaped Sachin’s determination to achieve financial independence and carve out his own path.
"I had several offers for government jobs, but I declined them all because I wanted
opportunities, Sachin showed an enterprising mindset.
"During the Zatra in our village, I would receive some pocket money from my parents and relatives," he explained. "But instead of spending it, I would travel to my uncle's place in Mumbai, purchase goodies, and sell them during the Zatra to make a profit."
This early exposure to commerce and selfreliance laid the foundation for Sachin’s journey to becoming one of Goa’s most celebrated entrepreneurs His story continues to inspire a new generation of dreamers and doers.
Sachin Rane, the visionary founder of
Team 24, began his entrepreneurial journey as a humble salesman, selling mobile recharge cards shop-to-shop. Despite starting with modest means, his exceptional drive and innovative approach quickly made him stand out, achieving the highest gross sales compared to even the most established agencies in Goa.
After completing his 12th grade, Sachin enrolled in an engineering college but soon realized his true calling lay in building his own business. Recalling those formative years, he shared, “It was the era when mobile phones had just entered the market. Prepaid top-up cards were a novelty, and only brands like BPL and IDEA were available. Back then, both incoming and outgoing calls were chargeable."
Sachin tapped into the emerging demand and started selling prepaid cards across the coastal belt, targeting kiosks and local stores. “I worked entirely on commission, with no fixed salary, yet my sales were nearly three times higher than any other agency,” he noted. His relentless work ethic and knack for identifying opportunities laid the foundation for what would eventually become a thriving business empire.
This early experience not only sharpened Sachin’s entrepreneurial instincts but also instilled in him the confidence to transform his vision into reality, culminating in the creation of Team 24, a testament to his unwavering dedication and foresight.
While Sachin Rane’s career began with selling prepaid mobile cards, his true passion always lay in the food and beverages industry. At just 18 years old, he took his first entrepreneurial leap by launching a product called Honey Jam. "I met a farmer in Sirsi who made jam from honey and pineapple, selling it by the highway," Sachin recalled. Impressed by the taste and quality, he saw an opportunity. "The idea of repackaging struck me. I started purchasing the jam in bulk and rebranding it as ‘Honey Jam,’ using bottles I designed myself."
Sachin even built a website to sell Honey Jam online in 1999, a bold move at a time when e-commerce was still in its infancy. However, scaling up proved challenging due to the manual production process.
Despite this, Honey Jam marked the beginning of his journey into the FMCG sector, laying the groundwork for bigger ventures.
F o l l o w i n g H o n e y J a m , S a c h i n experimented with several product lines before launching his most successful brand yet: Namaste Chai. But before that milestone, he dabbled in the ice cream business. "A friend had a full setup for manufacturing ice cream, but the limited in-house production capabilities restricted growth," Sachin explained This challenge pushed him into research and development, leading to the
Namaste Chai has grown into a formidable presence, with over 40 stores across Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, serving an impressive three million cups of tea every month. "We’re scaling quickly and aim to reach 10 million cups a month across all stores soon," Sachin said. With ambitious plans to expand nationwide, Namaste Chai is poised to become a household name, embodying Sachin’s relentless drive and vision for the food and beverage industry.
Sachin Rane’s latest venture, XPANSE, marks his foray into the coffee industry
creation of his first in-house product, Nature Day, a line of carbonated beverages "Today, Nature Day is available in leading stores across the country," he noted.
Building on the success of Nature Day, Sachin ventured into the tea market, driven by the untapped potential of standardizing tea service in India. "The chai market in India is enormous—75 crore cups a day yet there was no standardized brand offering a quality cup of tea. That inspired us to launch Namaste Chai," he shared.
with a mission to redefine how Indians enjoy their daily brew. A self-confessed coffee enthusiast, Sachin shared his inspiration for the brand: “I consume several cups of coffee a day, and I’m familiar with the many excellent players in this market. While India’s hot beverage market is predominantly driven by tea, coffee is rapidly gaining traction among the younger generation, with its market share growing from 11% to 25%. This makes coffee a futuristic and expanding market.”
However, Sachin noted a key challenge:
the steep cost of enjoying coffee in India. “If you visit most coffee shops, a single cup costs anywhere between 300 to 400. Compare that to the U.S., where coffee is a staple and costs $4 to $5 a cup. For them, it’s a fraction of their income, but here, we’re spending nearly 30% of our income on a cup of coffee. That’s where XPANSE comes in to bridge this gap by offering high-quality coffee at an affordable price, starting with our first store in Goa.”
For Sachin, coffee is more than just a beverage; it’s fuel for the ambitious, energizing people to achieve their goals. "Our idea with XPANSE is to provide ‘fuel for the magic within you, ’ which is reflected in our tagline, ‘Fuel Your Magic,’” he said. The brand’s logo—a bird known for flying 59,000 miles in its lifetime, the longest flight of any bird—symbolizes boundless energy and resilience. "It represents people who go the extra mile, and our promise is that wherever you travel, we’ll be there for you with coffee."
To keep prices affordable without compromising on quality, XPANSE leverages advanced technology. “We’ve cut down costs on marketing, printing, and stationery, ensuring every penny saved benefits our customers," Sachin explained. The brand has also partnered with a Singapore-based startup specializing in AI-powered coffee bean selection. “This technology ensures we use only the best quality beans before the roasting process, allowing us to serve superior coffee at an accessible price point.”
With XPANSE, Sachin aims to create a new benchmark in India’s coffee culture, combining affordability, quality, and innovation to fuel the aspirations of a generation on the move.
Sachin Rane envisions the first XPANSE store in Panaji as the blueprint for a chain of successful outlets across the region. “This is our model store, where we ’ re experimenting and gathering customer feedback,” he explained. “To encourage input, we offer special discounts to customers, which helps us fine-tune and improve our setup for future stores. Our next locations are planned in Margao and Belgaum, and
we aim to open at least 10 more outlets in the coming months.”
Managing multiple ventures while prioritizing personal fitness might seem daunting, but Sachin believes it all comes down to discipline. "For any businessman, discipline is everything I prioritize my fitness by dedicating at least one hour to the gym every day," he shared. “This helps me counterbalance the sedentary aspects of office work and meetings. I’ve been consistently working out for 15 years, which keeps me energized and focused.”
Sachin credits much of his success to his strong and well-structured team “A dedicated team is the backbone of any successful business. I’ve built a robust team by allocating clear responsibilities a n d e m p o w e r i n g t h e m t o w o r k independently without interference,” he said This approach not only ensures smooth operations but also allows Sachin to oversee multiple businesses effectively. To keep his team motivated, Sachin goes a step further by making them partners in his ventures. "I believe in sharing ownership, which gives them a stake in the company and drives them to work with greater passion and commitment," he added. This collaborative and empowering leadership style has been instrumental in the growth of his businesses, enabling him to turn ambitious visions into thriving realities. Every entrepreneur, no matter how big or small, faces challenges on their journey to success. What sets them apart is their ability to overcome these roadblocks and turn adversity into opportunity. When asked about the challenges he encountered while building his business empire, Sachin Rane candidly shared, “The life of an entrepreneur is filled with challenges. There isn’t a single venture or businessman who hasn’t faced hurdles. Every morning, I encounter hundreds of challenges, and my goal is to resolve them before I leave the office in the evening.”
One of the most compelling examples of Sachin’s resilience and resourcefulness came during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when businesses worldwide were g r a p p l i n g w i t h u n p r e c e d e n t e d difficulties. "Like most businesses, we faced significant challenges, especially in retail and consumer goods. The business was at a standstill, but I ensured that every
employee received their salary on time," he recalled.
Sachin took a ten-day break to strategize a way forward. With a sachet packing machine previously used for Namaste Chai premixes, he pivoted the business to meet the growing demand for immunityboosting products “During COVID, everyone was looking for ways to boost their immunity. We decided to develop an immunity product—‘Kadha’—a traditional herbal drink made from spices and herbs.
A f t e r 1 0 d a y s o f r e s e a r c h a n d development, we created a product that not only catered to the demand but was also scientifically validated.”
The Kadha was analyzed in the U.S., achieving an impressive ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of 132,000 per 100 grams, a testament to its efficacy. Armed with this certification, Sachin launched the product and achieved staggering success. “In two years, we sold over four crore sachets, generating more revenue than in previous years,” he shared proudly.
This remarkable story underscores Sachin’s ability to adapt and thrive, turning a global crisis into an opportunity for growth.
When it comes to advising budding entrepreneurs, Sachin Rane emphasizes the importance of action over perfection.
" I f y o u w a n t t o e m b a r k o n t h e entrepreneurial journey, just start and keep going," he said "Don’t wait for perfection, funding, or building a big team. Roll out your product and let the market decide. If your product is good and adds value to consumers, it will grow."
Sachin stresses that market feedback is invaluable. "Testing the market is the first and most important step. Let the market guide you with its feedback. Even when we launched XPANSE, despite being a well-established enterprise, we faced numerous challenges. By inviting customer feedback—over fifty responses daily we were able to refine our offerings. Our next store in South Goa will open with all these improvements incorporated, based on consumer suggestions."
He encourages entrepreneurs not to wait for big funding to start their ventures. "Let your product generate enough income to
sustain itself. Also, don’t delay launching your product or service because ideas lose their relevance with time."
Upcoming Ventures
Sachin also shared insights into his exciting new ventures, signaling his continued drive for innovation. Among them is NATUROLA, a natural carbonated drink set to disrupt the Indian beverage market, which currently lacks a product of this kind. Another upcoming product is VITAMIX, a new-age energy drink designed to meet the needs of modern consumers.
Additionally, Sachin plans to launch PUORA, a brand focused on delivering farm-fresh products directly to consumers without any chemical processing. "This line will support farmers while giving consumers access to healthier, natural products," he explained.
Taking his ambitions a step further, Sachin revealed that his company is in the process of acquiring a publicly listed firm. "Very soon, you’ll see public offerings as part of our expansion strategy," he said. With these ventures, Sachin continues to exemplify what it means to innovate and adapt, inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs to follow in his footsteps.

infrastructure, governance, and education, marking him as a leader of exceptional foresight and pragmatic solutions. The initiative sought to imbue students with democratic values, preparing them not only for academic success but also for responsible citizenship.
Parrikar’s leadership style was grounded in humility and pragmatism. Despite his considerable political influence, he never sought the trappings of power or indulgence. His no-nonsense approach to governance earned him comparisons
with Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, both for his unassuming presence and profound influence on Goa’s political landscape Under his leadership, Goa saw not only the revitalization of its infrastructure but also a renewal of its sense of civic responsibility.
Strengthening India’s National Security
Beyond his contributions to Goa, Parrikar’s tenure as Defence Minister of India (20142017) stands as a testament to his unyielding commitment to the security and defense of the nation. His tenure was defined by bold decisions and critical reforms aimed at modernizing India’s defense apparatus. Most notably, Parrikar oversaw the 2016 surgical strikes against terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a move that was hailed as a decisive response to cross-border terrorism. His leadership was instrumental in empowering India’s armed forces, providing them with the autonomy and resources necessary to take strong and swift action in times of crisis.
Parrikar was also a champion of defense procurement reform, simplifying the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP),
which improved transparency and efficiency in acquiring military equipment. His efforts culminated in the securing of the Rafale fighter jet deal with France, which strengthened India’s defense capabilities significantly Despite the challenges posed by the complex nature of defense reforms, Parrikar’s legacy remains one of boldness, pragmatism, and an unflinching commitment to national security.
A Mentor and Inspirational Leader Parrikar’s influence extended far beyond the political sphere His leadership style—marked by simplicity, integrity, and a focus on results—left an indelible impact on those who worked closely with him.
Nitin A. Gokhale, a prominent strategic analyst, was deeply influenced by Parrikar’s transparency and no-nonsense approach to defense reform. Similarly, Jeroninio "Jerry" Almeida, a renowned author and motivational speaker, found in Parrikar not just a political ally but a mentor.
Jerry's first encounter with Parrikar in 2011 led to a close collaboration that u l t i m a t e l y s h a p e d h i s v i e w s o n governance and leadership. Parrikar’s honesty and commitment to addressing
Goa’s pressing issues, such as corruption, illegal mining, and environmental degradation, earned him Jerry’s trust and admiration.
Another prominent individual, Savio Rodrigues, a Goa-based journalist and politician, was profoundly shaped by Parrikar’s leadership Rodrigues embraced Parrikar’s ethos of selfless service and his focus on long-term, p r a

a ’ s development. Parrikar’s words, “Come to Goa if you want to make a difference”, became a guiding principle for Rodrigues, inspiring him to contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.
A Man of Simple Tastes
Despite his towering political stature, Manohar Parrikar was a man of simple tastes. His love for Goa’s coastal cuisine, particularly fish curry and rice, reflected his deep connection to the state and its way of life. Even while serving in Delhi as Defence Minister, Parrikar often reminisced about the informal, relaxed atmosphere of Goa, which he missed dearly. His preference for simplicity and his disdain for luxury were symbolic of the grounded leadership that defined his political career.
A Legacy That Endures
On his 69th birth anniversary, we honor the memory of a man whose vision for a better Goa and a stronger India continues to guide us Manohar Parrikar a leader, mentor, and visionary—will forever remain a legend, never forgotten.

VELROSE PEREIRA
Exploring Music as “A Never-Ending Experience of Growth”
By Seeja Prabhu
The trumpet, a brass instrument known for its complexity, is often considered one of the most challenging instruments to master. However, Velrose Pereira, a seasoned trumpeter, singer, and s o n g w r i t e r , h a s n o t o n l y conquered this art but has also become a celebrated figure in Goa's music scene.
Born in Goa but raised in Muscat, Oman, Velrose’s connection to her roots has always been strong. “My maternal grandmother instilled my love for Goa and Konkani during my early years,” she says, noting that the time spent with her grandparents in Goa left a lasting impact. Though she grew up in Oman, the love for Goa remained ever-present, making it no less than a home for Velrose. After completing high school in Oman, Velrose moved to Canada to pursue her Fine Arts Honours degree in Performing Arts from York University. Her father, Avers Pereira, a prominent Tiatrist, played a significant role in shaping her musical journey. Having performed alongside some of the biggest names in the industry—such as the late Alfred & Rita Rose, Prince Jacob, and the late H. Britton Avers Pereira’s influence was instrumental in guiding Velrose toward her musical path.
Choosing the Trumpet
When asked about her decision to pick the trumpet, Velrose shares, “My dad always told me to take the road less traveled, to have greater life experiences and lessons Perhaps this is why, unintentionally, I was drawn to the
trumpet.” True to her father’s advice, Velrose has never shied away from challenges. Rather than following the conventional path, she opted for an instrument that demanded skill, perseverance, and precision.
The trumpet's significance in Goan musical heritage also played a part in her decision. Velrose describes the trumpet as “one of the most beautiful and romantic instruments out there,” emphasizing the empowerment she feels when holding the trumpet in her hands. As a woman in the brass instrument world, she admires the few who dare to pursue this demanding art. Velrose is also proficient in other instruments, such as the keyboard, baritone, and occasionally, the guitar. A Trumpeter, Singer, and Songwriter
Apart from being an accomplished trumpeter, Velrose is also a singer and songwriter. Music, for her, is both a passion and a therapeutic
GOA’S
pursuit. Writing songs allows her to express her deepest emotions and personal experiences, while singing provides an avenue to share her worldview with her audience. “Music is a very deep and personal life experience,” she says. Though the journey is filled with challenges, Velrose finds the rewards of being a musician far outweigh the difficulties. “Every musician can relate to the fact that music is an ongoing journey of growth and learning. It’s not just a profession; it’s a life experience,” she explains. Performing Live and Facing Challenges
Performing live is a unique and exhilarating experience, but it is not without its anxieties.
Velrose admits that she often feels nervous before stepping onto the stage, with the jitters being part of the process. Yet, despite the stage fright, performing with the trumpet remains one of her greatest joys.
As a woman in a male-dominated brass music industry, Velrose has had her share of criticism. “It’s inevitable, and I’ve been compared to male trumpeters many times The most common critique is that women don’t play as well as men,” she says. However, she dismisses these comparisons, believing that music is not about gender but about expression and skill. “I’ve always believed that growth and learning never stop,” Velrose adds.
Imparting Words of Wisdom
For aspiring musicians, especially women in the music industry, Velrose has a simple but powerful message: “Someday, all the hard work and sleepless nights are going to be worth it. Struggles and failures are part of life, but don’t let them stop you from chasing your dreams.” Velrose’s journey is a testament to the fact that passion, perseverance, and a clear vision can lead to success, no matter the obstacles.
She also emphasizes the importance of
enjoying the process of learning. “Music, like any art form, has no end to learning. I’ve realized that instead of being hard on myself, I now try to enjoy the daily practice routines. The key is to perfect the basics and continue growing with every note I play,” she says.
Velrose’s humility and resilience have been crucial to her success. Despite her remarkable achievements, she remains grounded. “I feel I still have a long way to go before I can say ‘I made it,’” she reflects. Velrose’s commitment to her craft and her constant pursuit of improvement set her apart as a true artist.
Conclusion
Velrose Pereira is an inspiring figure for aspiring musicians, particularly for women pursuing careers in the arts. She has proven that with hard work, perseverance, and a passion for your craft, success is within reach. Though she is already highly skilled, she continues to strive for growth, learning from every experience, and staying true to her roots in Goa.

PRERNA PALEKAR
The Journey of the Goan Kathak Sensation
By Seeja Prabhu
The journey of an artist is one of the most inspirational tales of all. Dive into the captivating story of Prerna Palekar, a Goan Kathak sensation whose dedication to the performing arts serves as a beacon for aspiring artists everywhere. Born into a family of artists, Prerna was introduced to dance and teaching at an early age, fostering a deep passion that would shape her life.
A Solid Foundation in Kathak Prerna began her formal training in Kathak at the age of eleven, completing her ‘Kushal Purna,’ a rigorous nine-year program at Kala Academy Goa. Not only was she the first Goan to earn a Master’s in Kathak, but she also excelled in theater, performing in Hindi, Marathi, and even Konkani plays. As a graduate of Konkani from St Xavier's College in Mapusa, she topped her class at Goa University and was awarded a scholarship for her outstanding achievements.
After exploring various artistic fields, Prerna ultimately decided t o p u r s u e d a n c e a s h e r professional career. Following her graduation, she completed her MA in Kathak from Pune University.
A Passion for Teaching
From a young age, Prerna developed a love for teaching, sharing her passion for dance with younger students Recognizing that many children in her village lacked exposure to the joyous world of dance, she began offering lessons to inspire them. After completing her Master's degree, Prerna faced a crucial decision: to remain in Pune or
return to Goa, where opportunities for Kathak were limited. Believing it was her responsibility to give back to her community, she chose to return.
“There were many students eager to learn Kathak, but very few teachers in Goa,” she explains. This realization led her to establish ‘Sudhakala Prangan Goa’ in 2019, a thriving center for Kathak education. Her classes cater to a wide age range, from six to seventy years old, demonstrating that Kathak truly has no age limits.
The Essence of Kathak
For Prerna, teaching Kathak is about much more than technique; it’s a deeper practice that fosters personal growth. She believes that dance can help individuals become better human beings, and she strives to create a positive environment in her classes. Prerna explains the meaning of ‘Kathak’ through the quote “Katha kahe so Kathak kahave,” which means that Kathak is a dance of storytellers. She feels this dance form connects with people on a profound level. Through her teaching, she tells stories to her students, who in turn express their own narratives through dance. Prerna additionally emphasizes the importance of mastering basic movements, allowing dancers to express complex emotions as they progress.
A Beautiful Journey
Passionately expressing the unique aspects of her art, Prerna notes that classical dance has specific rules, yet Kathak is a flexible form that allows for personal interpretation. She likens the various ‘chakkars’ or ‘avartans’ of Kathak to the human life cycle, making it an incredibly relatable art form. “It’s about using your body through your heart,” she explains. Prerna expresses appreciation for the support she has received over the years. “When I am
performing or teaching, I feel like the purest version of myself. I could do this all day; being true to myself is my greatest blessing.”
Overcoming
Challenges
Prerna’s journey has not been without challenges Initially, she struggled for acceptance in a society that doubted the viability of a dance career. However, with time and modernization, she has proven her worth. Reflecting on her career choice, she recalls a pivotal conversation with her theater teacher who encouraged her to consider Kathak as a career “Those ten minutes of heartfelt guidance changed everything for me,” she shares.
A Philosophy of Cooperation
Prerna holds a strong belief in the power of cooperation over competition While competition can be a motivator, she warns that it can also lead to negative consequences for performers if not handled correctly. One of her proudest moments was winning second prize at the National Youth Festival, organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. “I remember pouring my entire soul into that performance,” she recalls Her goal in competing was to showcase Goan's talent on a national stage, a mission she has continued to pursue “Growing as an independent woman is an exhilarating experience, and financial independence is essential for women today.”
The
Journey of Teaching
For Prerna, teaching is a reciprocal journey. “You don’t just teach; you learn as well,” she notes. Over the years, she has grown not just as an excellent Kathak performer but also as one of the best teachers in Goa. “My name means ‘Inspiration,’ and I aim to inspire my students as my teachers inspired me.”
GOA’S PREMIER
Her approach to teaching involves instilling the values inherent in Indian performing arts
Prerna encourages her students to explore techniques from various performing arts, ensuring their understanding goes beyond just Kathak. “I motivate my young dancers to think beyond what is taught, encouraging their imagination and understanding,” she adds. Looking Ahead
As she looks to the future, Prerna aims to expand ‘Sudhakala Prangan’ further, hoping her training will become a turning point in her students' lives She is also dedicated to refining her skills as a solo performer. Recently, she participated in a solidarity event titled “SAAD Manispanak,” aimed at aiding children in need through art. Prerna wishes to organize more such events to utilize art for the betterment of society.
Moreover, Prerna encourages everyone, young and old, to learn at least one form of art. “It offers a new perspective on life and serves as a form of catharsis that is difficult to explain—it must be experienced.”
Prerna Palekar’s journey as a Kathak dancer and teacher exemplifies resilience, passion, and the transformative power of art. Through her dedication, she is not only preserving Kathak but nurturing a vibrant community of artists in Goa.

Ajay Singh’s journey has been one of steady growth and worthwhile success. Though not without its struggles, it is his sheer resilience and determination that have solidified his place as a noteworthy figure in Goa’s hospitality industry. However, like many, Mr Singh did not initially set out to join this field.
Hailing from the quaint city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Mr Singh first followed his father’s guidance and prepared for medical entrance exams, unaware of the world of hospitality. However, after a conversation with his elder brother about the growing scope of the sector, Mr Singh was persuaded to explore this path. He then pursued a Hotel Management degree from IHM Mumbai (Dadar Catering College), graduating in 2002.
Initially specializing in Food and Beverage (F&B) services, Mr Singh’s early career revolved around this field in hospitality. Working at notable properties such as Taj Krishna, Hyderabad, where he spent three years as an F&B Associate. Mr Singh then decided to broaden his knowledge base by pursuing an MBA from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (formerly UP Technical University), one of the largest technical universities in India. He specialized in Sales & Marketing and HR Management, further complementing his education with a SAP course.
With the retail sector gaining momentum in India, Mr Singh ventured into this field, joining Daily Bread Gourmet Foods (I) Pvt Ltd in Bangalore as an Area Sales Manager
However, in 2009, the recession hit the retail i n d u s t r y h a r d , prompting Mr Singh’s return to his roots in hospitality, a field where he had already e s t a b l i s h e d a reputation. Mr Singh’s first major role in the hospitality industry was as the Food and Beverage M a n a g e r a t H o t e l Fidalgo, Panaji, Goa This move turned out to be a pivotal step in his career. Since then, Mr Singh has spent over 14 years in the hospitality industry of Goa, with his current position being the General Manager of The Fern Kesarval Hotel & Spa, Verna, G o a U n d e r h i s l e a d e r s h i p , t h e property has flourished, with significant growth and expansion that has transformed it into one of the finest destinations in Goa. According to Mr Singh, he is highly fortunate for this role, “We are performing exceptionally well in terms of revenue management and budgeting, while also keeping attrition rates under control. This is how we hope to move forward and continue making positive contributions at the macro-economic level.”
The Fern Kesarval Hotel & Spa is known for its small yet focused and highly productive team, as evidenced by the exceptional results they achieve.
The Fern Hotels & Resorts rebranded the Kesarval Garden Retreat in 2019. Before this, the property faced several challenges, notably a lack of awareness. While Kesarval Gardens was known as a wedding venue, many needed to be made aware of the hotel and its amenities. When Mr Singh joined, the property began to thrive. Under his guidance, The Fern Kesarval Hotel & Spa has emerged as a leading hotel in the region.
Mr Singh explains that the hotel relies heavily on "word of mouth" publicity, focusing on market penetration and targeting volumes to ensure that guests are consistently delighted by their experience. This strategy has built a strong foundation of customer loyalty, with 90% of guests being repeat visitors, both from the corporate and leisure sectors. Additionally, Mr Singh points out the strategic
advantage of the hotel’s location. “We are uniquely positioned as the only hotel of this standard so close to Goa Dabolim International Airport, just a 15-minute drive away. The hotel’s proximity to major cities makes it the ideal venue for MICE activities,” he says. The property’s prime location has helped attract guests from nearby cities, and it also serves as a stopover for transit customers who enjoy a quick bite or a lavish meal.
As General Manager, Mr Singh has ambitious plans for the property. He is confident in the potential of The Fern Kesarval Hotel & Spa, and in his tenure, he intends to maximize its growth. “There’s a lot to be done here. We are focused on steady growth and taking one step at a time,” he says Future developments will include more rooms and larger banquet facilities The property offers guests the opportunity to enjoy leisure activities, explore Goan beaches, or visit the Kesarval Springs right behind the hotel, all thanks to its prime location.
When asked about his plans for the next five years, Mr Singh is pragmatic but optimistic. “The hotel industry is highly dynamic, requiring professionals to stay updated with trends and continuously innovate. While I can’t predict the future, I firmly believe in my work ethic, and I aim to grow by giving my best. My goal is to see myself in a leadership role, perhaps as Vice President of a large hotel chain, managing multiple properties. The rest is up to each individual. Everyone must give their best.”
Mr Singh places a high value on stability, but he clarifies that it should not be confused with comfort. “Once you achieve stability, it gives people the chance to recognize you and your work, developing an identity for yourself. If people know you and your work, they will trust you, knowing that you have been in the profession for a long time and that you know your way around.”
Additionally, Mr Singh offers crucial advice for those in the hospitality industry. He emphasizes that organizational goals and personal goals must align. "If the organizational goals are achieved, your personal goals should be accomplished too. If not, you risk neglecting one over the other. This strategy is key to success in the hotel industry," he says.
Ajay Singh is a seasoned hospitality professional, and his journey at The Fern Kesarval Hotel & Spa is a testament to his dedication and work ethic. The property has experienced impressive growth since he arrived in 2021. With his relentless spirit and strong principles, Goa is sure to witness even greater success from Mr Singh.
MICROPLASTICS
Exploring the Impact on Human Health
By IG TEAM
A wonder of our era, a treasure that arrived in countless beautiful h u e s , y e t i t w a s n e v e r genuine merely a decorative item, never intended for practical use. Polluting our air and oceans, leaving wildlife in distress and the waters lamenting, this detrimental legacy clings to us, refusing to disappear A creation forged from oil and heat now lies abandoned at our feet. Once so convenient, lightweight, and inexpensive, we are finally waking up from our plastic-induced s l u m b e r O u r o c e a n s a r e brimming, and our lands are misled. How we long to turn a new leaf, to liberate ourselves from the clutches of plastic. Yet plastic persists, unwilling to depart, lasting for a millennium, a toxic inheritance that endures.
A n I n v i s i b l e T h r e a t :
Microplastics
Picture yourself wandering down a sandy beach, where the waves softly kiss the shore and the sun bathes you in its warm glow. While you meander, your eyes catch a glimpse of a plastic bottle bobbing in the water, followed by a plastic bag ensnared in the currents. But what if I told you that the real culprit isn’t just these visible pieces of plastic, but something much smaller, almost invisible to the naked eye? For instance, maybe you’re enjoying your morning coffee, but you
might not realize that minuscule plastic particles, too small to see, could be drifting in your drink. This is where the true danger lies: microplastics.
What Are Microplastics?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, less than 5 millimeters in size, that have quietly infiltrated every corner of our planet. They are in the water we drink, the food we eat, and even the air we breathe. You can’t see them, but they’re there, lurking in the places we least expect, slowly spreading their impact in ways that are only beginning to understand. Welcome to the world of microplastics—an environmental crisis so small, yet so vast.
The Ubiquity of Microplastics
Microplastics pose a significant global danger to our environment and jeopardize food safety. One of the biggest contributors to their ubiquity is plastic packaging, which encases almost every food product available today. Whether it's dairy, meats, seafood, or beverages like bottled mineral water, plastic has emerged as the preferred choice for food storage and sales. However, this convenience brings with it an escalating environmental issue that impacts everyone.
Microplastics lurk in the most unexpected places—floating in the air we breathe, mixing with the dust around us, and even hiding in the clothes we wear. They’re in our cosmetics, and cleaning products, and can even fall from the sky with the rain. From the seafood on our plates to the fruits and vegetables we eat, and even in our table salt, microplastics have found their way into every corner of our lives. We’re surrounded by them, whether we realize it or not.
The Toxic Load: Microplastics as Carriers
of Toxins
Hypothetically, microplastics also serve as vehicles for harmful chemicals, including persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals, transferring these toxins from smaller organisms to those higher in the food chain. As they traverse the ecosystem, they carry these dangerous substances along, posing a risk to larger species, including humans, who may ingest contaminated prey. This highlights that microplastics are not merely a physical pollution issue; they also act as a perilous conduit for environmental toxins.
The Internal Threat: Microplastics in the Human Body
Microplastics are not limited to the surface; they can infiltrate our bodies and reach deep within. Gradually, these minuscule particles can migrate to essential organs such as the liver, spleen, heart, lungs, and kidneys Alarmingly, they can even penetrate the blood-brain barrier, entering the brain itself. This indicates that these tiny pollutants pose a dual threat—not only to our environment but also to our health, impacting us in ways that are just starting to come to light.
The Impact on Wildlife and the Ecosystem
Tiny plastic particles, created as larger plastics break down, pose a serious threat to both wildlife and humans. These minuscule fragments seep into ecosystems, harming animals that mistake them for food Microplastics can make their way up the food chain, affecting us all What starts as a seemingly small problem is turning into a major environmental and health crisis.
Microplastics in Human Organs and Health Risks
Upon entering the body, plastic micro- and
nanoparticles do not remain stationary; instead, they disperse throughout different organs. Research has identified microplastics in numerous areas of the human body, including the blood, saliva, liver, kidneys, and even the placenta Additionally, these particles have been discovered in tissues such as the lungs and digestive tract, prompting serious concerns regarding their potential long-term effects on our health.
Oxidative Stress and Genetic Damage
Microplastics can wreak havoc on our bodies by causing oxidative stress, damaging DNA, and altering gene activity—factors linked to cancer development. Astonishingly, these tiny particles have been found in human breast milk and even in meconium, the first stool of newborns. In animal studies, particularly in mice, microplastics have been shown to harm reproduction, leading to reduced sperm count and quality, ovarian damage, and metabolic issues in offspring. This raises serious concerns about the potential long-term effects on human health, especially for future generations.
The Toxic Chemicals in Microplastics
When microplastics are ingested, they bring along harmful chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) These toxic substances can interfere with vital biological functions in the human body, disrupting the endocrine and immune systems. They can also negatively impact mobility, reproduction, and development, and even increase the risk of cancer This highlights the far-reaching dangers of these tiny plastic particles on our health.
A Call for Change
The reality of microplastics paints a bleak picture of our future if urgent action is not taken. As the scale of this issue grows, so too does the imperative to combat plastic pollution in all its forms. The damage already done by microplastics is widespread, and their effects on our ecosystems and human health cannot be underestimated.
MANDO FESTIVAL
Preserving Traditions in a Rapidly Changing Goa
By Seeja Prabhu
“The loss of culture is the loss of identity.” This phrase has gained considerable attention in recent years, urging individuals to reconnect with their roots in an effort to rediscover themselves. In today’s era of globalization, where individuals can effortlessly immerse themselves in a myriad of cultures, many have become more attuned to the traditions of others However, this shift has often led to the neglect of one’s own cultural heritage, as the world becomes an ever-blending melting pot of diverse influences. One such cultural tradition that epitomizes the rich and unique blend of Goa’s history is the ‘mando.’ This musical genre, sung in Konkani, represents an unparalleled fusion of Portuguese and Indian influences, making it a distinctive part of Goan identity.
D e s p i t e i t s c e n t u r i e s - o l d existence, mando continues to reflect themes of love, longing, and heartbreak, woven into its narrative lyrics.
Traditionally performed at w e d d i n g s a n d c o m m u n i t y gatherings, mando is now more often heard at select events. The Goa Cultural and Social Centre (GCSC), the key organizers of the mando festival, have made commendable efforts to preserve and promote this important facet of Goan culture. In a bid to keep such age-old traditions alive, the government of Goa has been organizing the All Goa StateLevel Mando Festival each
December.
This year marked the 57th edition of the festival, held at the Menezes Braganza Hall in Panaji. However, the event’s outcome was far from the grand spectacle it had once been. On the festival's first day, December 11, 2024, only three groups participated across various categories, which included one group from the children's category and two others representing teenagers, traditional mando, original compositions, and dance. These three groups performed a mere eight mande (songs).
The second day, Thursday, December 12, witnessed a modest increase in participation, with eight troupes performing 11 songs. However, the dance category was notably absent Yet, despite this modest rise in participation, the event was still met with a disappointing turnout from spectators. The Menezes Braganza Hall, though a historic and charming venue, is relatively small and typically struggles to accommodate large crowds. Even so, the number of seats available was far from being filled. A large portion of the seating area remained unoccupied, and only a few people wandered in and out of the hall during the performances, never staying for the full program.
The sight was a poignant one, particularly given the ongoing debates surrounding the loss of Goan identity and cultural heritage. The lackluster response to the Mando Festival raises critical questions about the authenticity of the discourse surrounding heritage preservation. Are Goans truly concerned with safeguarding their cultural legacy, or is the outcry merely symbolic, a way to check off a box without making meaningful efforts to preserve what is culturally significant?
In addition to the disappointing spectator attendance, another critical issue surfaced
before the event even began. It was brought to light that the Menezes Braganza Hall, the traditional venue for the All Goa State-Level Mando Festival, was not accessible for individuals with disabilities. This lack of inclusivity has raised serious concerns, with the state commissioner for persons with disabilities formally requesting the relocation of the festival to a more accessible venue.
The Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) highlighted that the venue did not comply with accessibility standards outlined by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD Act). The commissioner’s letter to the Directorate of Art and Culture underscored that the venue’s inaccessibility violated the provisions of the RPwD Act. The commissioner then recommended that the festival be moved to a venue equipped to accommodate individuals with disabilities and requested an action plan detailing steps to make the Menezes Braganza Hall compliant within 90 days. Despite these requests, the government failed to address the issue or relocate the event, underscoring a disregard for inclusivity. In an era where inclusivity and accessibility are expected norms, this failure to meet basic standards of accessibility is deeply troubling. Not only does this create a barrier for a significant portion of the population, but it also sends a message that certain groups are excluded from participating in or appreciating the cultural heritage of their own state. This oversight may also be one of the contributing factors to the low turnout for the festival, as many individuals may have felt unable to attend due to accessibility concerns.
The dwindling interest in the Mando Festival and the government's neglect of essential accessibility standards are indicative of a broader issue: the erosion of cultural identity in Goa. While Goans continue to loudly debate
GOA’S PREMIER
the loss of cultural heritage, actions that truly demonstrate a commitment to preserving this heritage are sorely lacking. The mando itself, once a symbol of Goan pride, is increasingly sidelined, with fewer young people learning its songs or carrying on the tradition. The lack of appreciation for such festivals not only highlights a disconnection from Goa’s past but also raises alarm about the future of the state’s cultural identity.
Cultural preservation is not just about celebrating heritage through festivals and performances. It requires genuine, sustained efforts to engage communities and ensure that traditions are passed down through generations. It also demands that festivals and cultural events be inclusive, accessible, and engaging for all members of society.
As Goa stands at the crossroads of modernization and tradition, the diminishing importance of events like the Mando Festival calls for a more meaningful dialogue about the preservation of cultural heritage Whether through better government initiatives, greater community involvement, or a renewed focus on accessibility, the time has come for Goans to act on their concerns. The question remains: will the heritage that defines this vibrant state be lost, or will it be nurtured and passed on for generations to come?
If Goa is to preserve its identity, it must act now. Without genuine efforts to safeguard its culture, it risks losing not just its heritage, but the very essence of what makes it unique.

Raising Awareness and Combating a Common Health Issue CONSTIPATION
By Seeja Prabhu
December marks Constipation Month, an important occasion to shine a light on one of the most common yet overlooked health issues faced by individuals w o r
s prevalence, constipation remains a t o p i c t h a t m a n y a r e uncomfortable discussing, leading to a lack of awareness and understanding. This article delves into the growing issue of constipation, addressing the biases surrounding it, providing essential facts, and offering practical tips for managing the condition.
Understanding Constipation: A Global Health Concern Constipation is more than just an o c c a s i o n a l f e e l i n g o f discomfort—it is a chronic health issue that affects millions of people globally. According to the W
g y Organization, it is estimated that around 14% of the world's p
constipation Yet, despite its widespread occurrence, many people do not seek help due to societal taboos, embarrassment, or a lack of awareness.
C o n s t i p a t i o n i s g e n e r a l l y characterized by infrequent bowel movements, meaning, less than three times a week, difficulty passing stool, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation While occasional constipation is common and often linked to dietary or lifestyle changes, chronic constipation can indicate
u n d e r l y i n g h e a l t h i s s u e s s u c h a s gastrointestinal disorders, hormonal imbalances, or neurological conditions.
The Rising Trend: How Diet Plays a Role in Constipation
One major contributor to the increasing prevalence of constipation is the modern diet. As processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats have become a staple of many people’s daily meals, digestive health has been adversely affected. These foods are often low in fiber, which plays a crucial role in promoting regular bowel movements. Fiber helps to add bulk to the stool, making it easier to pass. When the diet lacks sufficient fiber, the stool can become dry and hard, leading to straining during bowel movements. Additionally, a lack of hydration can exacerbate the problem, further slowing down digestion and leading to constipation. The overconsumption of processed foods, fast foods, and sugary snacks is a significant factor contributing to the rise in constipation cases, as these foods not only lack fiber but also often contain additives that disrupt the natural balance of the gut.
The Social Stigma and Biases Around Constipation
Another factor that contributes to the lack of awareness and understanding of constipation is the stigma surrounding the topic. Many people feel embarrassed or uncomfortable discussing digestive issues, particularly bowel movements, in social settings. This societal taboo can prevent individuals from seeking help, which in turn leads to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and unnecessary suffering. The biases surrounding constipation often reflect societal attitudes toward bodily functions. The "quiet" nature of the condition, compared to more visible or acute health problems, can make it seem less serious in the eyes of both patients and healthcare providers. Chronic constipation can lead to issues such as bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, and even depression, making it a far
more serious issue than many perceive. Key Facts About Constipation
To better understand and address the issue of constipation, here are a few essential facts:
1. Dietary Choices Matter: A diet low in fiber is one of the most common causes of constipation Fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are essential for maintaining healthy digestion.
2. Hydration is Crucial: Dehydration can significantly contribute to constipation. Drinking enough water helps to soften the stool and support the digestive system’s functions.
3. Exercise and Physical Activity: Regular physical activity can help stimulate bowel movements. Lack of movement can slow down t
constipation.
4. Medication and Medical Conditions:
Certain medications, including painkillers, antidepressants, and antacids, can cause constipation In addition, conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diabetes, or hypothyroidism can also contribute to chronic constipation.
Tips for Managing Constipation
Fortunately, there are several ways to manage and alleviate constipation While lifestyle changes play a vital role, seeking medical advice is crucial for long-term management.
1. Increase Fiber Intake
Fiber is one of the most effective ways to relieve constipation. Aim for at least 25–30 grams of fiber per day. High-fiber foods such as fruits (apples, pears, berries), vegetables (spinach, broccoli, carrots), whole grains (oats, brown rice, quinoa), and legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas) are excellent sources Gradually increasing fiber intake can help your digestive system adjust without causing bloating or discomfort.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is crucial for preventing constipation Dehydration can make stools more difficult to pass. Aim for at least eight glasses (64 ounces) of water per
day, and consider drinking warm water or herbal teas, which can further support digestion. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as these can dehydrate the body.
3. Exercise Regularly
Physical activity helps stimulate the muscles in the digestive tract, promoting regular bowel movements. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as walking, swimming, or cycling, most days of the week. Even simple activities like stretching and yoga can help keep the digestive system moving.
4. Establish a Routine
Taking time each day to sit on the toilet, even if you don’t feel the urge to go, can help train your body to establish a regular routine. It’s also important not to ignore the urge to go when it arises, as holding in stool can worsen constipation.
5. Consider Probiotics
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help maintain a healthy gut microbiota Consuming foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, or fermented vegetables, may support healthy digestion and reduce constipation.
6. Consult a Healthcare Provider
If constipation persists despite dietary and lifestyle changes, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend over-the-counter remedies like fiber supplements or stool softeners, or in more severe cases, prescription medications or therapies to address the root cause of the issue.
Conclusion: A Call for Greater Awareness
Constipation may seem like a minor inconvenience for some, but it can have a profound impact on physical and emotional well-being. Raising awareness about this common issue, reducing the stigma, and encouraging open discussions can help individuals seek treatment and improve their quality of life.

SAFE AND EFFECTIVE HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING FOR OLDER ADULTS
A man works out with ropes in a gym as his trainer stands to the side, encouraging him.Known for its ability to deliver effective results in less time than traditional workouts, HIIT is a big "hit" with younger fitness enthusiasts. But here's the good news: HIIT workouts can benefit older adults too. Here are some tips for older adults to make this style of exercise safe, effective, and rewarding. What is HIIT?
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a workout style that alternates between intervals of intense effort and recovery. The goal of HIIT is to push your body hard during the highintensity intervals and allow it to recover during intervals of low- to moderate-intensity activity.
During the intense bursts of exercise in a HIIT session, your heart rate rises. A simple way to judge if you are exercising at high intensity is to use the talk test. If you can sing while exercising, you're at low intensity. If you can have a conversation while exercising, your effort is moderate. When you can't say more than a few words without having to take a breath, you're working at high intensity. During recovery periods, your heart rate dips from that peak, but still stays elevated relative to your baseline. This sustained increase means a HIIT workout burns more calories and improves cardiovascular fitness more efficiently than sustained moderateintensity exercise. The structure of HIIT makes it highly efficient, helping you gain maximum benefits in minimal time.
A HIIT workout consists of four essential parts:
1 A warm-up of lower-intensity movements targeting the same muscles as the main workout
2 High-intensity intervals during which you increase speed, resistance, or incline to maximize your effort
3. Recovery intervals, or active rest periods, equal in length or slightly longer than high intensity intervals
4. A cool-down with light activity like walking or marching.
One of the most appealing features of high-intensity interval training is its flexibility. Cardio, strength, or combination workouts can be turned into interval sessions by increasing incline, speed, or resistance to create h i g h - i n t e n s i t y i n t e r v a l s a n d alternating those with recovery intervals.
KEY BENEFITS OF HIIT: BOOSTING CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH AND STRENGTH
HIIT workouts offer significant health benefits. Below are some key benefits of incorporating HIIT into your routine: IMPROVES AEROBIC FITNESS.HIIT has been shown to increase VO2 max, a measure of how much oxygen your body consumes while exercising and the best available measure of aerobic fitness. This increase occurs across age groups.
Benefits heart health. Interval training strengthens the heart muscle and improves cardiovascular health. The periodic boosts to your heart rate during HIIT sessions promote more efficient oxygen use.
Boosts metabolic function. HIIT improves the function of mitochondria tiny energy generators found in every cell of your body.
Builds muscle. According to studies, HIIT can increase fat-free mass, which includes muscle, by 1% to 3%. This is important for older adults who begin to lose muscle at increased rates as they age.
Preserves muscle power. HIIT helps maintain fast-twitch muscle fibers, which are essential for quick, explosive movements This is especially important because fasttwitch fibers naturally decline with age, making activities that require sudden bursts of energy more challenging.
Fast results. Research shows that HIIT can lead to fitness benefits faster than traditional, steady-state workouts. A 20-minute HIIT session
burns more calories and strengthens the heart more than 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise.

PRECAUTIONS:
Remember that intensity depends on your fitness level — what feels intense for you might feel different to someone else. Avoid trying to keep up with younger or more experienced athletes. Instead, focus on gradually increasing your own challenge. Even small bursts of effort can boost your fitness.
If you're older, or haven't exercised in a while, modify high-intensity interval training as needed to suit your current fitness level. For example, you may not need to jog as fast or use as much resistance to raise your heart rate as the person next to you at the gym. Consult your doctor before starting a HIIT program, especially if you have any health conditions. If you have heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, be extra cautious and consult a medical professional before incorporating high-intensity efforts into your routine.
In terms of frequency, you don't have to do HIIT workouts every day, nor should you In fact, HIIT is only recommended two to three times a week.
Getting started with HIIT
Getting started with HIIT as an older adult doesn't have to be intimidating. You can get all the benefits of HIIT just by tweaking whatever exercise you do today The key is to begin with manageable intervals and gradually increase the intensity as your fitness improves.
For example, if you're used to walking for 30 minutes, try walking at your normal pace for five minutes, then walk as fast as you can or jog for one minute. Afterward, return to your usual pace for three minutes. Repeat this cycle several times.
If your preferred exercise is swimming, you might try to alternate one leisurely lap with one or two laps swimming at a challenging pace. Work your way up to repeating this pattern for 30 minutes.
As you get stronger, you can increase the time and intensity of the higherintensity intervals while reducing the recovery periods. Always listen to your body and progress at a pace that feels comfortable.
Some soreness after a workout is normal, but let your doctor know if you experience persistent or intense muscle pain that starts during a workout or right afterward, or if your muscle soreness lasts for more than one to two weeks.
