Pioneers, Progress, and Sustainability

The role of technology and startups in shaping the future of our ecosystem is indeed significant, as they influence various facets of our lives, economies, and societies Several factors underline the importance of tech and startups for the future, and India is rapidly progressing in this realm

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is actively promoting Digital India, leaving no stone unturned to bolster the startup and technology-driven landscape in the nation. Numerous facilities are being provided to foster the growth of startups and the tech ecosystem. India has witnessed the emergence of prominent startups that originated within its borders and have subsequently expanded their global presence.

Goa is also actively participating in this trend, with numerous significant startups and companies establishing themselves in the state. Several Goan enterprises have not only thrived in this domain but have also expanded internationally. However, a decade ago, the situation was quite different. Goa was grappling with a deficiency in essential infrastructure and f a c i l i t i e s n e c e s s a r y f o r t h e establishment of tech companies. It was during this period that a pioneering effort was initiated by Goa's inaugural tech couple under the banner of UMANG.

"Uma was employed at IBM, and I was working for another multinational," Mangirish recounted. He described the inception of UMANG as a b l e s s i n g i n d i s g u i s e Circumstances led him to r e s i g n f r o m h i s j o b i n Bangalore due to his mother's

He elaborated, "Already married at that time, Uma was working with IBM, and we jointly decided that she would continue her job, while I would return to Goa to be with my mother."

While in Goa, tending to his ailing mother, Mangirish found himself contemplating how to utilize his spare time. It's worth noting that during that era, the concept of remote work for multinational corporations was not yet a viable option. "I had several possibilities before me –freelancing or taking on assignments – yet freelancing was my least favoured choice. I believed it was crucial to project a professional image to clients, and, in my opinion, freelancers often weren't taken as seriously," he shared.

It was during this period that Mangirish's entrepreneurial spirit began to stir, compelling him to embark on a venture that would not only generate income for himself but also c r e a t e e m p l o y m e n t opportunities for others. "At

He encouraged me to find a fitting name for the venture. G i v e n m y t e c h n i c a l background, this proved to be a challenging task," Mangirish recounted. It was during this period that his father-in-law proposed the name UMANG. Mangirish recalled the moment, saying, "It was a blend of my name and Uma's. That's how the concept of UMANG was conceived and was officially established."

The company's inception was a solo effort by Mangirish, as Uma was then employed at IBM. "I was confident that Uma would be joining me within t h r e e t o f o u r m o n t h s , "

Mangirish explained. The primary hurdle they faced was their background – both of them hailed from technical fields and had no prior experience in running a b u s i n e s s . Securing the first client comes r e l a t i v e l y e a s i l y w h e n venturing into a new business, and Mangirish was fortunate to have a client already on board while navigating the formalities of registering the company with STPI The organization also provided c r u c i a l g u i d a n c e o n regulatory compliance. However, the real challenge emerged when it came to acquiring the second client. M a n g i r i s h n o t e d t h a t obtaining a second client is inherently more demanding than securing the first, as opportunities rarely present themselves twice. After a period of persistent struggle, they managed to secure their second client – another foreign client This success was a turning point, leading them to realize that focusing on international clients was the strategic path forward.

Mangirish's decision to prioritize international clients was underpinned by two key factors Firstly, international clients readily a c k n o w l e d g e d t h e i r professionalism, recognizing India as a hub for top-tier s o f t w a r e d e v e l o p e r s Secondly, these clients e x h i b i t e d a d e e p e r understanding of business processes, valuing aspects such as analytics, design, development, testing, and maintenance – a perspective that Indian clients often lacked.

Within a span of three years, we made the leap to this expansive office, accommodating our evergrowing team of 60 members engaged in diverse projects."

Reflecting on the evolution of infrastructure, Mangirish acknowledged the persistent challenge it has been. "In the past, internet rates were considerably higher However, with the influx of numerous players in t h i s d o m a i n , h e a l t h y competition has led to more favorable rates. As we primarily cater to international c l i e n t s , m a i n t a i n i n g a seamless online presence a r o u n d t h e c l o c k i s imperative," he elaborated.

While working with international clients might seem glamorous, Mangirish emphasized the array of challenges it entails. "Overcoming these challenges has been p i v o t a l i n e s t a b l i s h i n g ourselves as successful players in the international markets," Mangirish said.

Addressing the issue of resource acquisition, Mangirish highlighted a significant challenge faced in the tiny state of Goa. MY LOVE FOR EXPLORING - SURAJIT CHATTERJEE

Born and brought up in Jharkhand and having studied in Dhanbad, Ranchi, Surajit Chatterjee initially wanted to join the Indian Armed Forces His destiny took him in another direction though and he’s now a part of the food & hospitality sector. Having unfortunately failed the competitive entrance exams to join the Armed Forces, he is now General Manager at the Holiday Inn in Candolim.

“I started my journey into the hospitality sector from Trident Hotel in Chennai where I learned a great deal. After completing my industrial exposure at Trident, I moved back to Kolkata to do my vocational training at the Taj Bengal and as I hopped from one property to another, my love for the food and beverages industry grew stronger and stronger.”

His introduction into the hospitality industry began in Hyderabad where he worked as a front office trainee as a college placement but that didn’t suit him so he quit and continued his studies until he got a job in Mumbai “I started as a trainee supervisor in food & beverages at the Ambassador Hotel in Mumbai which has roof top restaurant. I was there for 2 years then I joined a the cruise liner for 4 I saw the world this way and

gained lot of exposure by meeting the people from over 54 countries. I then decided to come back to India to concentrate on my career, and that was the time I joined the Hyatt Regency in Bombay,” he said.

“My last stint in F&B was with Accor Hotels in Ahmadabad as director of Food & Beverages until I got the opportunity at the Radisson in Ludhiana as General Manager and just before Covid I moved to Goa. I joined the IHG hotel in Goa as General Manager and I’ve been here 2 years. I must say that it is a great opportunity to work with the IHG as a brand. I had faced lots of challenges due to covid because the opening had been delayed, there was a shortage of manpower, no proper supplies and the whole project was delayed by almost 3 months, but all the hardship ended and we opened officially in August 2021 with 60 rooms.”

Surajit tells me that the bio-bubble of Netflix got them a booking for 100 rooms during October 2021 which enabled the business to stabilize and they could finish the pending project work. “We have two buildings and currently we h a v e 1 0 4 r o o m s w i t h o n e presidential suit, 2000 sqft of banqueting, pool bar, a fullyfledged gymnasium and soon we

are introducing a spa and kids play area which will be commissioned before Diwali,” said Mr Chatterjee. Holiday Inn is a popular brand and this particular hotel, being the second one in Goa, has a real pull factor with its guests. “This property is very fresh and new and different from the any other property in India. The uniforms we wear here, the rooms and décor, the interiors and facade - everything is unique and one of a kind,” he added. Talking about his strengths and weaknesses, Mr Chatterjee said that being an F&B expert and having worked in the sector for decades, his major strength lies in F&B. “But now being a General Manager, I have to oversee every aspect of managing the hotel to ensure our guests are happy. I have a very good exposure and maintain good public relations. I like to meet people and I use my creativity and innovations to make the guest experience a memorable one Coming back to the weakness, everyone has some weakness for sure In my case, I have yet to explore Goa and learn more about the people of Goa and this is the only weakness that I can see as of now,” said Mr Chatterjee. When asked how he deals with bad days in the business Mr Chatterjee

said, “Every business sees good and bad days and I don’t consider bad days as bad but a learning step. I see it as a means to improve, look for ways to face the challenge and come out as a winner. I make sure that my team remains motivated all the time and to do that we have different activities and our focus always remains to create a good guest experience and the positive feedback that we get from them keeps on motivating our team. In fact, even during covid and pre-opening, we have never cut any salaries of our staff and still today, I ensure that they get the best of the facilities at this property. This has in turn meant that we’ve not lost a single member of staff.”

Mr Chatterjee said that the property’s location is the their major USP. “We are situated in the centre of the most happening tourism destination. Our rooms are very spacious, our smallest room is 305 sqft and every room has a balcony so you can’t get better that this Each room is very aesthetically designed and we have a trolly in each bathroom and the entrance to the Presidential suite is a most unique experience which is unmatched. In fact, the Presidential suite is spread across

HOSPITALITY incredible_goa incrediblegoaofficial incrediblegoaofficial incredible-goa 38 www.incrediblegoa.org INCREDIBLE - GOA AUGUST 2023

2500 sqft area and once it’s ready, it will be the talk of the town. It has a total of 6 rooms with 3 bedrooms and each bedroom has a separate closet area, large living room and even a separate kitchen.”

Goa is the most popular tourism destination in the country and it can improve further if the roads and other infrastructures are upgraded as per requirement “ Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n i s a m a j o r challenge faced by the tourists and locals alike but I am sure that completion of the new Zuari bridge and the new airport at Mopa will improve tourism activities further. I also believe that Goa Tourism and other tourism bodies in Goa are working hard on improving the tourism business in Goa so soon something positive will come out of this. My only suggestion to them is to keep the greenery intact.”

When I asked which other brand he would like to name besides his property in Goa, Mr Chatterjee

replied very politely saying that all the brands are very good and doing well and it is very difficult to name one. “I have been to lots of hotels in G o a a n d t h e r e a r e m a n y international brands with a presence in the state. New brands keep coming up and hence I can’t differentiate or name one or two but would rather say that we are set apart from most other hotels in Goa and we fit into the ‘upscale hotels’ segment.”

Mr Chatterjee said that the season will start from October with lots of festivals coming up, such as Dassehra and Diwali “We are planning to start our Navaratri Thali from October since the we have a good Gujarati footfall. Our pool bar will be launched too with live music theme nights at the weekends We will also be relaunching our “Drunch” which is a mix of drinks + lunch the concept behind which is the typical nature of Goans who eat breakfast late.

We invite locals as well as the home guest to enjoy a day by the pool and indulge in specially crafted lunches with drinks. It starts at 12.30pm and goes on until 4pm.” The hotel also has an electric buggy that drops people to the beach and Holiday Inn Candolim Goa is the only hotel that has an EV charging station. “It is available for in-house guests as well as for locals who can download the app, charge at the station, pay on the app and leave which is a very unique service that no other hotel has,” he added.

Speaking about the impact of social media and influencers on the business, Mr Chatterjee said, “North Goa is all about the young crowd, between the ages of 25 to 40, and according to me, they look at social media and influencers to choose their hotels, restaurants and nights out so they play a huge role in influencing the behaviour of the guests.”.

Mr Chatterjee said that in future, he wants to work with a bigger room inventory in the luxury hotel sector. “For me position is not as important as growth. I want to learn new things and explore different cities but all this will not happen for at least two years since I have plans of staying in Goa for a while still. After that, I will think of making plans to explore bigger properties and brands at a new leisure destination. I love Goa and I want to wake up in the morning with the fresh air that Goa has. I love driving to work and meeting the people I do.”

PROTECTING PARADISE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Nestled along the Arabian Sea, the idyllic state of Goa, India, boasts pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage that attracts tourists from around the world. However, the allure of this coastal paradise is threatened by the pervasive issue of plastic pollution. Despite its natural beauty, Goa has not been immune to the global problem of plastic waste. Singleuse plastics and inadequate waste management practices have resulted in plastic garbage pervading its urban centers, delicate ecosystems, and breathtaking shorelines. This crisis i m p e r i l s b o t h t h e s t a t e ' s environment and its economy, which heavily relies on tourism. A d d r e s s i n g t h e d i r e consequences of plastic pollution and exploring effective solutions is paramount to preserving Goa's natural beauty and fostering a sustainable future.

The Impact of Plastic Pollution on Goa

Beach and Marine Pollution: Goa's beaches, renowned for their beauty, suffer from plastic pollution caused by improper

disposal by both residents and visitors. This plastic debris not only mars the scenic coastline but also poses grave risks to marine life. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for their favorite food, jellyfish, leading to ingestion and digestive blockages Seabirds consume plastic fragments, resulting in fatal internal injuries Plastic debris also entangles and suffocates marine creatures, disrupting their natural behaviors and populations.

Threat to Biodiversity: The diverse marine ecosystems of Goa are under threat due to p l a s t i c p o l l u t i o n C o r a l suffocation and the consumption of microplastics by fish can lead to chemical accumulation in the food chain This not only jeopardizes marine life but also the health of humans who c o n s u m e s e a f o o d f r o m contaminated waters.

Economic Impact on Tourism: Goa's economy is intrinsically linked to tourism, with its stunning beaches serving as a major draw. However, plastic contamination could tarnish the state's natural attractions, leading to negative online reviews, decreased tourist

numbers, and financial losses for local businesses.

Water Pollution: Plastic waste leaches toxins and chemicals into water bodies, harming aquatic life and potentially endangering h u m a n h e a l t h t h r o u g h

c o n t a m i n a t e d w a t e r a n d consumption of affected aquatic species.

Health Concerns: Plastic pollution has far-reaching implications for human health

Harmful chemicals from plastics can seep into the environment, affecting soil and water quality. As these chemicals enter the food chain, they can reach humans who consume seafood or other contaminated products.

W a s t e M a n a g e m e n t

Challenges: Insufficient waste management infrastructure exacerbates plastic pollution in G o a E f f e c t i v e g a r b a g e collection, sorting, and recycling systems are crucial to preventing plastic waste from infiltrating the environment.

Long-term Environmental Consequences: Plastics have an e n d u r i n g p r e s e n c e i n t h e environment, breaking down into microplastics that marine life

readily consumes. These particles then move up the food chain, potentially reaching humans who consume seafood, completing a harmful cycle.

Efforts by the Goa Government

To combat plastic pollution, the G o a g o v e r n m e n t h a s i m p l e m e n t e d a s e r i e s o f measures:

Plastic Ban: In 2018, the government enforced a ban on single-use plastics such as bags, c u t l e r y , a n d s t r a w s T h i s comprehensive ban extended to their production, distribution, and usage, aiming to significantly reduce the production and utilization of non-biodegradable plastics.

Plastic Waste Management

R u l e s : T h e G o a N o nB i o d e g r a d a b l e G a r b a g e (Control) Amendment Rules, 2018, provide guidelines for proper plastic waste treatment. The rules outline responsibilities for waste generators, municipal bodies, a n d w a s t e p r o c e s s o r s t o encourage effective waste segregation, collection, and recycling.

communities, and volunteers, the government organizes beach clean-up campaigns These initiatives not only contribute to plastic waste removal but also instill a sense of responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.

Plastic-Free Initiatives: The government promotes plasticfree practices at events and gatherings, encouraging event planners to adopt alternatives to single-use plastics.

Plastic-Free Zones: Designated plastic-free zones serve as examples of successful plastic reduction These areas inspire behavioral change and showcase the feasibility of plastic-free living.

Further Steps for Plastic Waste Reduction

Promotion of Eco-Friendly Alternatives: Collaboration with local businesses to promote ecofriendly substitutes like bamboo straws and biodegradable containers can significantly reduce plastic usage. Reward businesses that actively support the plastic-free campaign, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

Embrace Traditional Practices:

Celebrate Goa's cultural heritage by organizing events that highlight traditional packaging

methods using natural materials. Collaborate with artisans to develop products that promote sustainable alternatives to plastics.

Plastic Waste-to-Art: Engage artists to create public art installations using collected plastic waste These artworks serve as powerful reminders of plastic pollution's impact and the need for sustainable practices.

Environmental Education: I n t e g r a t e e n v i r o n m e n t a l education into school curricula, teaching students about waste disposal, conservation, and plastic pollution. Encourage students to initiate plastic reduction projects within their schools.

Support Local Initiatives: Establish a fund to support local initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste. Collaborate with neighborhood associations, NGOs, and citizens to identify and promote effective projects.

Actions Tourists Can Take

As a tourist visiting Goa, you too can play a vital role in reducing plastic usage:

B r i n g R e u s a b l e s : C a r r y reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and utensils to minimize single-use plastic consumption during your trip.

Responsible Disposal: Use designated trash cans for proper waste disposal, especially in sensitive areas like beaches. If you can't find a trash can, hold onto your trash until you can dispose of it properly.

S u p p o r t P l a s t i c - F r e e

Businesses: Choose businesses that prioritize sustainable practices, sending a message that there is a demand for ecofriendly alternatives.

Conserve Water: Goa's water resources are strained during tourist seasons Use water judiciously and report leaks to aid in water management. Choose Local and Sustainable: Opt for locally produced goods with minimal packaging to reduce the demand for disposable plastics.

E n g a g e i n C o n s e r v a t i o n

A c t i v i t i e s : Participate in volunteer opportunities offered b y l o c a l e n v i r o n m e n t a l organizations, such as beach clean-ups, to actively contribute to plastic waste reduction.

Conclusion

Goa's natural beauty is a priceless asset that must be safeguarded from the onslaught of plastic pollution. The intertwined efforts

o f t h e g o v e r n m e n t , l o c a l communities, businesses, and

tourists are essential to combat this crisis. By acknowledging the detrimental effects of plastic waste, embracing sustainable practices, and fostering a culture of responsibility, we can work together to ensure that Goa remains a pristine paradise for generations to come.

Nurturing the Future of Goan culture CELEBRATING GOA'S RICH HERITAGE

Embracing the Mosaic of Influences

Nestled along the Arabian Sea, the state of Goa boasts a tapestry of cultures woven over centuries. A h a r m o n i o u s b l e n d o f Portuguese, Indian, and Konkani influences has shaped a unique cultural mosaic that Goans hold dear. The sun-soaked beaches, vibrant festivals, and mellifluous music are all threads that together form the vibrant fabric of Goan culture Yet, as time marches on, the future of this cultural legacy hangs in the b a l a n c e , f a c i n g a n amalgamation of challenges and opportunities.

Balancing Tourism's Allure with Environmental Harmony

The relentless surge in tourism has undeniably brought attention to Goa's natural beauty, but at a cost. The influx of visitors strains the delicate ecosystem, erodes infrastructure, and treads on the fine line between tradition and commercialization. As concrete and chrome rise to accommodate travelers, the local lifestyle and environment find themselves at a crossroads Striking a balance b e t w e e n t o u r i s m a n d preservation is imperative; embracing sustainable practices

can ensure that Goan culture's footprint on the world remains delicate.

Fostering Innovation: Retaining Goa's Bright Minds

The exodus of young minds in search of greener pastures threatens to hollow out the rich intellect that Goa has nurtured for generations While the world marvels at the achievements of these bright minds, Goa's own

garden of innovation can wither. Thus, fostering an environment

Navigating Assimilation

As the tides of change lap the shores of tradition, the allure of mainstream Indian culture

beckons. The sea of influences from across the subcontinent threatens to engulf the unique Goan identity This cultural assimilation sparks concern among those who treasure their roots. Yet, the essence of Goan culture is resilient, rooted in the hearts of its people The very worries about its disappearance highlight the depth of its significance.

A Ray of Hope: Commitment to Preservation

The beacon of hope shines bright, even amid these challenges Goans are united by a fervent commitment to preserving their h e r i t a g e . O r g a n i s a t i o n s dedicated to the arts, music, dance, and local festivals are the custodians of this legacy, diligently weaving it into the fabric of modern life. The state government has begun to wield

its influence in defence of Goan culture, declaring it a treasure to be safeguarded.

Pillars of Progress: Navigating the Future

Individual Threads, Collective Tapestry

Beyond these pillars lie individual actions that can collectively alter the course of history. A revival of

driven initiatives Supporting local artists, musicians, and dancers not only sustains livelihoods but also helps in infusing the contemporary with tradition. Embracing Konkani, the language of the land, keeps its roots alive. Ultimately, the future hinges on the pride Goans take in their cultural identity.

Cherishing the Flame: A Bright Future Ahead

In a world of uncertainty, the destiny of Goan culture rests in the hands of its people. If the flame of determination burns bright, if the commitment to preserve what is cherished remains unshaken, then the echoes of traditional music will reverberate through generations, the scent of spices will waft over festivals yet to come, and the heart of Goa will continue to beat to the rhythm of its unique cultural cadence.

ACCORDING TO CM SAWANT, GOA ECONOMY WOULD TAKE OFF THANKS TO THE NEW AIRPORT AND EXPERIENCE DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH

Pramod Sawant, the chief minister of Goa, stated on Monday that the coastal state is anticipated to experience double-digit economic growth following the opening of a new international airport that is anticipated to boost tourism. Inaugurated in December of last year, the Manohar International Airport in Mopa, North Goa, began conducting commercial flights in early January. Union

Home Minister Amit Shah was present when Sawant gave a speech to the Western Zonal Council in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. He said that sensible measures implemented by the state administration prevented Goa's economy from suffering any significant setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The CM stated that the opening of the Manohar International Airport, which will improve global

connectivity by opening up new routes to satisfy rising travel demand, is likely to result in a double-digit economic growth rate in Goa. He claimed that by e a r n i n g 72 p o i n t s i n t h e Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index Report 3 0, which was published by NITI Aayog, the little state had earned the fourth position. The index tracks the progress made by states and union territories in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals in a variety of sectors, including environment, economic growth, gender equality, health, and education. "Clean water and sanitation" (SDG 6) and "affordable and clean energy" (SDG 7) are the only two goals that Goa, the only state in the nation, has 100% scored on, Sawant remarked. According to the chief minister, the BJP-run state has created its indicator framework for each SDG in collaboration with key departments for SDG monitoring. According to him, "the Goa government intends to release a

baseline report on the indicator framework, which will serve as a benchmark in becoming SDG achievers."

According to Sawant, the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Goa was predicted to increase by 9 73% from 2021–2022 to 2022–2023 (advance), totaling Rs 90641 86 crore at current rates."Goa's estimated GSDP per capita for the year 2022–23 is therefore estimated to be Rs. 5.75 lakh, indicating a robust and healthy economy," he continued. Sawant claimed that sensible measures taken by the state government prevented Goa's economy, which is heavily dependent on travel and tourism, from experiencing any significant setbacks during the pandemic. As a result, the CM estimated Goa's GSDP for 2023–24 to be Rs 100002 25 crore at current prices, with a strong growth rate of 10.33 percent compared to the expected growth rate for 2022–23 (9.73 percent), and a per capita income of Rs 6.32 lakh.

A few editions back, certain important compliances which were due by the end of the month of June2023. Now, the due dates for many of these have been extended and now they fall due by 31st August 2023.

These compliances are onetime benefits given by the Government to taxpayers who may have missed out on doing them earlier. Hence it is all the more crucial to complete them in the given time frame.

1. Registered persons who failed to furnish the annual return (GSTR-9) by the due date for any of the financial years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-

20, 2020-21 or 2021-22 can avoid hefty late fees. They need to furnish the pending annual returns by 31 08 2023 If this is done, then the total amount of late fee under section 47 of the said Act payable in respect of the said return, shall stand waived which is in excess of ten thousand rupees (Rs 10000 CGST+ Rs 10000 SGST). Therefore such people can do the compliance at reduced late fee of only Rs 20000 in total as against much higher amounts.

2. Once GST registration is cancelled, a final return called GSTR 10 is to be filed. Sec. 45

o r d e r , whichever is later. For registered persons who failed to furnish the final return (GSTR-10) in the past, heavy late fees apply.

The current late fees are Rs 100 per day of delay, subject to maximum of Rs 5,000. Similar provisions exist in the SGST. Thus the total late fees accumulate to Rs. 200 per day subject to maximum of Rs 10,000. Now, if such persons f i l e t h e i r G S T R 1 0 b y 31.08.2023, then the late fee payable shall be restricted to Rs. 1000 only.

3. The next relief has been g i v e n t o C o m p o s i t i o n taxpayers who have not filed their annual return in FORM

4. A registered person, whose r e g i s t r a t i o n h a s b e e n cancelled on or before 31st December 2022 for non-filing of returns and who has failed to apply for revocation of cancellation within 30 days from the date of service of cancellation order, has also been granted relief.

Such person must file all pending returns, making payment of taxes due as per such returns, along with applicable interest , penalty and late fee. Thereafter, he must apply for revocation of cancellation of registration on or before 31.08.2023. No further extension of time period for filing application for revocation of cancellation shall be available.

Above are some of the i m p o r t a n t t i m e - l i m i t extensions granted by the Government, with benefit of highly reduced late fee. It is prudent for all taxpayers to c h e c k t h e i r p e n d i n g compliances and take benefit

HOW MUCH EXERCISE DO YOU NEED?

Regular exercise strengthens your heart and lungs and it can strengthen bones, slowing down the process of osteoporosis. It can help you move easily by keeping your joints, tendons and ligaments more flexible. Can help you lose weight when combined with good eating habits or maintain ideal weight by burning excess calories and promote sense of well being.

How much exercise you should be getting depends on several factors, including your current level of fitness, your fitness goals, the types of exercise you ' re planning to do, and whether you have deficits in such areas as strength, flexibility or balance. As a general rule, 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity (or 75 minutes of v i g o r o u s e x e r c i s e ) i s recommended as a weekly minimum. As you become more fit, you'll want to exceed that in order to reap maximum benefit A natural way of

splitting up the 150 minutes might be to do a 30-minute session five times per week, or you can break it up and do two 15-minute sessions during a single day. Adopt whatever schedule fits your lifestyle. For strength exercises, aim to work all your major muscle groups twice to three times each week, leaving 48 hours between each workout for recovery. If you do “totalbody” workouts, that's two sessions per week If you choose to split your workouts to target a specific muscle

group (e.g., “leg day”), that will require more frequent workouts. Just make sure you're leaving 48 hours of rest before you re-work a major muscle. If you have noticed problems with your balance, such as unsteadiness, dizziness, or vertigo, talk to your Doctor for r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s a b o u t balance-specific exercises. Get in three half-hour workouts each week in addition to a 30-minute walk at least twice weekly. It's best to stretch after you have warmed up for a few minutes, or perform stretching exercises after you completed your workout. When stretching each

muscle group, take it slow and steady, release, repeat again. But how much exercise is too much? You should expect a little muscle soreness after workouts, especially in the beginning. But if you find that your body is simply not recovering between workouts, you may be overtraining Remember that seniors( elderly) need more recovery time than younger people. W i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f “welcome” muscle soreness, an exercise program should make you feel good If it doesn't, you ' re probably overdoing it. That doesn't mean you should quit, only that you should dial back the intensity or frequency of your workouts until you hit the “sweat spot” in which you've “tired out” your body but then recovered enough to tackle y o u r n e x t s e s s i o n w i t h enthusiasm.
