26K GOANS SURRENDER INDIAN PASSPORTS, EMBRACE PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP

In the last decade, many Goans have opted to surrender their Indian passports, with most acquiring Portuguese nationality, according to state officials. This move grants them visa-free access to numerous countries, facilitating better employment and educational opportunities.

In response to a query by Congress MLA Yuri Alemao, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also oversees the Home Department, revealed that 25,939 individuals surrendered their Indian passports in Goa between January 1, 2014, and March 31, 2024.

Data from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Goa indicates that these 25,939 individuals applied for “new visa/exit permits” after

s u r r e n d e r i n g t h e i r I n d i a n passports within the said decade. In 2014, 2,037 people applied for new visa/exit services upon surrendering their passports. This figure surged to 4,121 in 2016 before slightly declining to 3,623 in 2017 and then to 2,958 in 2019. The number dropped to 954 in 2021 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions but rebounded to 2,094 in 2023.

An anonymous official disclosed that the majority of these individuals acquired Portuguese nationality. Portugal offers citizenship to those born in Goa before December 19, 1961—the day G o a w a s l i b e r a t e d f r o m Portuguese rule and to their subsequent two generations. The Portuguese passport provides visa-free entry to several

countries, including the UK and the EU, prompting many Goans to transcribe their births in Lisbon's Central Registry to avail these opportunities.

According to a report by The Indian Express, between 2011 and 2022, over 69,303 Indians surrendered their passports at regional offices across the country, with Goa accounting for over 40% of these cases.

In recent months, many Goans found themselves in a difficult situation after their passports were revoked following a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) memorandum dated November 30, 2022 The memorandum instructed authorities to revoke passports, instead of issuing 'surrender certificates,' for i n d i v i d u a l s w h o a c q

MANIPAL HOSPITAL GOA PIONEERS LIFE-CHANGING VATS SURGERY

Manipal Hospital Goa has marked a groundbreaking achievement in surgical oncology with the successful completion of a VideoAssisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) procedure, a first for the Panjim region. This life-changing surgery was performed by Dr Sredharan M, Consultant Surgical Oncology, along with his expert surgical team, on a 72-year-old woman.

VATS is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and specialized surgical instruments inserted

through small incisions in the chest This method allows surgeons to operate with s i g n i f i c a n t l y l e s s t r a u m a compared to traditional open surgery.

The patient, diagnosed with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer in her right lower lobe, was advised by Dr. Sredharan M to undergo the VATS procedure

After thorough discussions with the patient's family, Dr. Sredharan and his team proceeded with the surgery.

Upon successful completion of the surgery, Dr. Sredharan M

The procedure was conducted under the expertise of Dr. Sredharan M, Consultant Surgical Oncology, Dr Yogesh Gaude, Consultant - Anesthesia and Pain Management, and Dr Shekhar Salkar, Consultant - Surgical Oncology, along with the dedicated oncology team of Manipal Hospital Goa, including technicians and nurses.

Dr. Yogesh Gaude noted, "The patient experienced minimal discomfort and pain post-surgery, a significant improvement over traditional open chest surgeries. She recovered well and was discharged within a few days, continuing her recovery at home with regular follow-ups."

Dr. Shekhar Salkar emphasized, "This case exemplifies the advancements in surgical techniques that enhance patient

outcomes. The use of VATS, particularly for elderly patients, showcases the benefits of less invasive procedures. Beyond lung cancer, VATS can also treat conditions such as esophageal cancer, intra-thoracic tumors, a n d t h e r e m o v a l o f l u n g metastases."

MUMBAI TOGOA FROM

Rajesh Sheth’s Journey of Transformation

Rajesh Sheth, a prominent figure in Goa's business community, needs no introduction. Despite being born and raised in Mumbai, Rajesh's roots trace back to Goa, where his family's Kuldaivat (patron goddess) resides. In the early nineties, his family relocated to Goa, making it their Karma Bhumi (land of action). Since then, Rajesh and his family have made significant contributions to the state's economy, education, and employment landscape. This story chronicles Rajesh Sheth's journey and his seamless integration into Goan society.

"My father was in the real estate development business in Mumbai, and we often visited Goa to pay homage to our goddess in the village of Paroda, located in the Quepem Taluka. During one of these visits, someone showed my father a large piece of land in Porvorim. He instantly decided to invest in it," Rajesh recalls, adding that at the time, he had no idea this place would become their home for the rest of their lives "My father started his real estate business in the early seventies in Mumbai, but when he saw the potential in Goa, he decided to invest in a significant parcel of land. I believe it was the wish of our Kuldaivat that brought us to Goa and made it our home." Rajesh, with a background in electronics engineering, initially worked for a software development company in Pune before pursuing further studies in the USA. "I applied for a Master's in construction management in the US and soon joined my father in his business," Rajesh shares. After working with his father for almost eight months, he moved to the US to complete h i s M a s t e r ' s i n C i v i l Engineering "As soon as I finished my studies in the US, I returned to Goa to join my dad in his construction business. That marked the beginning of my construction and real estate development career in Goa."

Nova Cidade was their first project in Goa, spanning a large piece of land situated along the national highway in Porvorim. "The Nova Cidade complex comprises nearly t w e n t y r e s i d e n t i a l a n d c o m m e r c i a l b u i l d i n g s , featuring over two hundred apartments, nearly a hundred

offices, and more than fifty shops," Rajesh explains He adds that the land parcel in front of Nova Cidade also belonged to them. They developed this land into plots and sold them to individual buyers, who then constructed v i l l a s a n d b u n g a l o w s according to their needs.

Project Mall de Goa

Mall de Goa, the state's first full-fledged mall, is the

brainchild of the Sheth brothers, Rajesh and his younger brother Bhuvanesh. They conceptualized the project, drawing inspiration from the grand success of Cross Roads, Mumbai's first mall. "The idea for Mall de Goa stemmed from this inspiration," Rajesh says. "But when we started working on it, w e r e a l i z e d h o w overambitious and tedious the

journey would be Had we known the scale and the toll it would take on us, we might not have proceeded. However, once we started, there was no turning back. We managed to overcome all the major and minor obstacles."

Today, Mall de Goa stands as the only mall in Goa, housing numerous big brands and a multi-screen Inox multiplex. It attracts visitors not only from

Goa but also from neighboring states, who make road trips to shop, watch movie and enjoy the various food outlets in the mall.

The mall caters to the retail needs of local Goans, visitors from neighboring states, and tourists visiting Goa. "Tourists, in particular, find it appealing to visit the mall, enjoy the diverse food options in the food court, and experience t h e u n i q u e s h o p p i n g environment," Rajesh notes. The Education Sector Rajesh Sheth wears many hats, one of which is his involvement in the education sector. He oversees the Jnyan Vikas School, an English medium coe d u c a t i o n a l i n s t i t u t i o n established by his father in June 2005. Managed by the

Shri Sadanand Sheshgiri Shet Education Trust, this school was a dream project of the founder trustee, Late Shri Sadanand Sheshgiri Shet. "It was my father's dream to c r e a t e a n e d u c a t i o n a l institution to contribute to society. It began in 2005 in a small part of a bungalow and has steadily grown into a fullfledged institution offering classes from 1st to 10th grade. We will soon be adding preprimary and higher secondary sections," Rajesh shares. During the development of their land, Rajesh's father set a s i d e a p l o t f o r t h e educational institution he always envisioned. "My father always said that money will come and go, businesses will flourish, but the education we

i m p a r t w i l l a l w a y s b e remembered. We formed the trust in his name, Sadanand Sheshgiri Shet Education Trust. I still remember when the school started with just seven students in its first year. As it grew, we built the school building floor by floor. Today, we have over 400 students and classes up to the 10th grade While the future is uncertain, we are optimistic about expanding to higher levels soon," Rajesh narrates.

Heading the CREDAI - GOA

In the earlier days, there was no association for builders in Goa. This changed with the f o r m a t i o n o f t h e G o a C h a m b e r o f H o u s i n g Industries. "It was similar to the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries," Rajesh

explains. He joined the association in 2001, but soon after, various small and large developer associations across India united to form CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India). "That's how the Goa Chamber of Housing Industries m e r g e d i n t o C R E D A I , becoming part of a national association. I've been involved w i t h C R E DA I s i n c e i t s inception in Goa."

CREDAI recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. "Boman Irani of Rustomjee Developers is currently the president of the association, with Manoj Gaur as its chairman," Rajesh notes. He is the president of CREDAI in Goa. "The normal term for this position is two years, but if no one else steps up, you can

continue for an additional term. I believe this association b e n e f i t s r e a l e s t a t e developers in the state, and everyone should participate to advance the industry Our goal is to work alongside the state government."

"Goa is a small state, making it easier to collaborate with the g o v e r n m e n t a n d h e l p implement policies," Rajesh continues. He also mentions RERA (Real Estate Regulatory Authority), a government body established to regulate a c t i v i t i e s a n d p r o t e c t consumers. "CREDAI's task is to unite real estate developers for the benefit of all the stakeholders."

Addressing why many builders do not join the association, Rajesh points out a common issue in small states. "Here, any problems that arise can often be managed individually, so many builders don't feel the need to join an organization or association. This is one of our biggest challenges. However,

when policies are made, everyone, members and nonmembers alike, benefits," he adds.

With a vision of making India carbon neutral by 2070, the Prime Minister has set an ambitious sustainability goal. However, CREDAI has decided to accelerate this timeline, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. "We are actively working towards this

"Meanwhile, TCP Minister

The success of o n e p r o j e c t c a n b o o s t subsequent ones, creating a positive chain reaction Reviving agriculture is crucial, and alongside this, generating employment within the state is essential. Many Goans are moving out in search of jobs. I believe the IT sector and clean manufacturing can drive the state's industry in the right direction."

He also highlights the growing export business in Goa, with n u m e r o u s c o m p a n i e s engaged in exporting locally manufactured goods "The government is focusing on skill development to create a skilled workforce within the s t a t e , " R a j e s h a d d s , expressing his optimism for Goa's future.

c e r t i f i c a t i o n s , " R a j e s h explains. "These certifications will allow developers to market their projects at p r e m i u m r a t e s w h i l e simultaneously helping to balance nature by reducing carbon footprints."

The Way Ahead

According to Rajesh, Goa is evolving from being just a s o u g h t - a f t e r t o u r i s m destination into a prime market for holiday homes. "We are planning to develop both affordable and premium homes, ensuring that the charm of Goa, for which the state is renowned, is not compromised," he shares. "I believe the state government also needs to take initiative on various fronts, such as zoning land parcels. The government is working towards this, and we can only hope for the best." Rajesh is optimistic about the revival of the agricultural sector in the state. "There is already a movement towards this, with many private players

B e f o r e c o n c l u d i n g t h e interview, Rajesh emphasized that his presence in Goa is a blessing from their Kuldaivat (Family Goddess). "Today, due to her blessings, I have the opportunity to serve the temple as the president of the committee. I held the position from 2016 to 2019, and currently, I am the vice president for the term from 2022 to 2025. We are in Goa because of her blessings, and our success in every field is nothing but her grace. I am leaving no stone unturned in my service to the temple," he shared.

The Bollywood Queen of Goa

Bhumicka's Journey from Mumbai to Mastering Goa's Nightlife

Bhumicka, born and raised in the heart of Mumbai's Bollywood scene, was destined for a life intertwined with the glamour of the film industry. Her father, a stalwart of Bollywood for over four decades, provided her with a front-row seat to the dazzling world of cinema from an early age As a self-proclaimed "Bollywood child," Bhumicka grew up attending exclusive film launches and star-studded festival parties, hosted by the industry's elite.

Immersed in the vibrant culture of Bollywood, Bhumicka's path seemed clear However, she yearned to carve out her own identity within the entertainment w o r l d W i t h a n i n n a t e understanding of glitz and glamour, she ventured beyond Mumbai, setting her sights on the thriving nightlife and hospitality scene in Goa.

Bhumicka's transition was nothing short of spectacular. Her unique blend of Bollywood flair and entrepreneurial spirit quickly earned her the title of the "Bollywood Queen of Goa " Through her connections and keen b u s i n e s s a c u m e n , s h e transformed Goa's nightlife, creating a brand synonymous with luxury, entertainment, and

unforgettable experiences. This is the remarkable journey of Bhumicka, from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the sunkissed beaches of Goa, where she reigns supreme in the world of nightlife and hospitality.

According to Bhumicka, her Bollywood debut came with the film "Aap Ki Khatir," produced by Venus and featuring a starstudded cast including Akshay Khanna, Dino Morea, Priyanka Chopra, and Sunil Shetty. The film w a s d i r e c t e d b y o n e o f Bollywood's leading directors, Dharmesh Darshan. "He offered me a role in the movie, and there was a 45-day schedule in London where I had the chance to do an item number and a couple of scenes," she shared.

Despite receiving many offers after her debut, Bhumicka found them uninspiring and declined. "The offers I got did not resonate with me, and the ones I wanted to do, I didn't get an opportunity. I think maybe Bollywood was not my destiny," she reflected.

During this period, Bhumicka frequently visited Goa for

vacations, exploring its vibrant party scene at places like Tito's and Mambo's. It was during one of these visits that she met Anup, who introduced her to Ricardo D’Souza, the owner of Tito's. Impressed by her Bollywood background, Ricardo offered her the opportunity to host an event at his club, marking the beginning of her influential presence in Goa's nightlife.

"In 2015, Bollywood music was largely absent from Goa's club scene. No DJ played Bollywood songs, and people often looked down on Bollywood," Bhumicka recalls. She and Ricardo Joseph D’Souza, the owner of Tito's, decided to bring the Bollywood vibe to the club. "I agreed to host the event, but I had no experience in curating one. Others doubted it would work, but I went ahead with the first event at Mambo's in 2015, and it clicked."

The inaugural event drew a modest crowd of two hundred people and was held on Fridays, dubbed "Bollywood Fridays." However, the scene quickly transformed. "Within a few weeks,

the crowd started growing. At times, there was a huge queue stretching from Mambo's to Tito's, a n d t h e p l a c e w o u l d b e completely packed."

The impact of Bollywood nights was so profound that Tito's experienced a dip in attendance on Fridays when Bhumicka's show was at Mambo's. This led to the introduction of Bollywood nights at Tito's on Saturdays "Since then, there was no looking back. I continued doing shows on Fridays at Mambo's and Saturdays at Tito's, and both venues were always packed."

Bhumicka notes that others tried to replicate their success, but none could match the charm of her performances. "I believe it is R i c k y a n d I w h o b r o u g h t Bollywood culture to Goa," she asserts.

The Bollywood Queen of Goa

During that time, convincing DJs to play Bollywood music was a formidable task, as most of them p r e f e r r e d t e c h n o m u s i c , " Bhumicka recalls. "Now things have changed, and everyone is trying to copy our success. I've

received offers from others, but I politely declined them all DJs would never call me by name, instead saying 'Hey Bollywood Queen,' and that's how I earned the title 'The Bollywood Queen of Goa.'"

This moniker led to Bhumicka being featured in numerous media coverages, each referring to her as the Queen of Bollywood in Goa "Post-COVID, the scenario has changed with the rise in Indian tourists and the increased demand for Bollywood music," she says. "I am the founder of Bollywood Nights in Goa, which started in 2015."

The Influencer’s World

Reflecting on the impact of COVID-19, Bhumicka noted that the entertainment and hospitality industries were among the hardest hit, being the first to close and the last to reopen. "COVID-19 changed many lives, and I believe mine was one of them. With the e n t e r t a i n m e n t i n d u s t r y completely shut down, I found myself with nothing to do," she said.

During this challenging period,

some of Bhumicka's influencer friends suggested she delve into the world of social media influencing. "Prior to that, I wasn't very engaged with social media; it was just a platform for posting videos," she explained. "I come from a background of live performances with huge crowds in front of me, and Instagram wasn't my cup of tea. But that all changed during COVID-19."

Bhumicka began creating videos featuring beauty products and posting them on social media. "I started connecting with brands who would happily send me products to review, although they wouldn't pay me for it," she s h a r e d . T h i s m a r k e d t h e beginning of her journey into the influencer world, transforming her presence and expanding her reach beyond live events to digital platforms.

"When I started influencer marketing, I hardly had any followers, but my audience grew rapidly, and I reached 100K followers in a very short span of

time," Bhumicka shared. She now boasts more than half a million followers "One of my first opportunities in influencer marketing was traveling to Udaipur to review a resort. They invited me to stay for three days and experience their facilities Soon, many brands started connecting with me, and I began traveling frequently to Goa to review hotels and restaurants."

Bhumicka believes that her work, directly or indirectly, has played a role in attracting tourists to Goa.

"The events we held at Tito's and Mambo's pulled huge crowds, especially Bollywood lovers. My social media engagement seems to have brought significant business to the hospitality industry in the state," she said.

Her recent collaborations with top brands like Nykaa, Flipkart, and OnePlus have also been pivotal.

"Post-COVID, I wanted to return to Goa and connected with Ricky. We restarted our events with a special Independence Day event at Tito's," Bhumicka added,

marking her triumphant return to the entertainment scene in Goa. Bhumicka credits much of her success to Ricardo D'Souza. "Ricardo has been instrumental in my journey," she acknowledges. Looking ahead, she has ambitious plans. "I am very actively involved in animal welfare, which is a side of me not many people know about. I love doing whatever I can to help stray animals and have plans to open a shelter for them," she shared.

In addition to her philanthropic efforts, Bhumicka is working on launching her own celebrity clothing collection in Goa. She also has dreams of opening a beach club, restaurant, or café. "Whether it's a beach club, a restaurant, or a café, I want something I can call my own," she said.

Her popular Bollywood Nights at Tito's and Mambo's will continue to attract crowds, ensuring her enduring presence in Goa's vibrant nightlife scene "The Bollywood Night with Bhumicka

Singh will keep pulling in the crowds at Tito's and Mambo's," she added.

Visionary Behind Goa’s Leading Security Agency ANIL DESAI

Anil Desai hails from the charming village of Pernem in North Goa. A law graduate from Salgaonkar College of Law, Anil has carved a niche for himself by establishing one of the most successful security agencies in Goa His father relocated to the capital city, leaving behind their 400year-old ancestral home, in pursuit of better opportunities and a brighter future for his family.

Despite his father's serviceoriented background, Anil ventured into the business world and found tremendous success. His story is one of determination and vision, as he built Goa’s leading professional security agency, leaving an indelible mark on the state. Anil Desai's journey from a small village to becoming a prominent business figure in Goa is truly inspiring.

Anil Desai originally pursued a law degree with aspirations of a legal career. "Soon after finishing my degree, I joined the Chamber of Mahesh Sonak, who is now a judge of the honorable high court of Goa," shared Anil. He also practiced alongside Advocate Devidas Pangam, currently the Advocate General of Goa.

"Coming from a service-oriented family, my first choice was steady employment, and I was fortunate to secure a position with GSIDC," Anil recalled. GSIDC, a new corporation initiated by the late Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar, appointed Anil as the Manager Legal Head. "In

just a year and a half, the organization built more than fifty bridges across Goa, significantly advancing the s t a t e ' s i n f r a s t r u c t u r e However, after Mr Parrikar m o v e d t o D e l h i , t h e organization lost its direction, prompting me to move on to my next role as Corporate Legal Head at Dempo Group of Companies.”

A t D e m p o G r o u p o f Companies, Anil Desai had his longest stint, spanning 12 years, before venturing into the security industry. When asked about what influenced his decision, he shared an intriguing story: "My uncle, who was the Superintendent of Police and later the Chief of Police at Daman, Diu, and Silvasa in 1995, started his own security services business in 1998 He quickly grew his company, leveraging the industrial hub of Silvasa, and now runs one of the top security services in India. He inspired me to leave my job and enter the so-called 'risky b u s i n e s s ' o f entrepreneurship."

Despite the reluctance and fear of losing a steady income, Anil decided to take the plunge. "I couldn't take the jump immediately, so I studied the market thoroughly. I

t r a v e l e d t o D a m a n t o understand the security business and its workings. It w a s a b l u e - c o l l a r j o b , completely different from the corporate world. I had to deal with various situations faced by security guards. I wasn't cut out for it initially, and age was a factor—I was no longer a 20year-old willing to take risks. I had a family to support. However, after four to five months of research, I decided to dive into my own venture." Anil’s journey, marked by

c a r e f u l p l a n n i n g a n d unwavering determination, eventually led him to establish a successful security agency, f u r t h e r c e m e n t i n g h i s reputation as a dynamic entrepreneur.

When Anil Desai entered the security business, he quickly began to observe both its strengths and weaknesses. As a h i g h l y e d u c a t e d l a w graduate, he realized he had a significant advantage over o t h e r s w h o l a c k e d professional or educational backgrounds. “When I started the security business, the first thing I did was obtain a PSARA (Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act) license, w h i c h r e g u l a t e s t h e functioning of private security agencies. This initiative, introduced by Honorable Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, ensures the authenticity and t r a i n i n g o f s e c u r i t y professionals who guard your home and office in your absence,” Anil explained. He continued, “We established our own training center in Miramar and a training ground in Raibandar to provide essential training to our security guards. Each guard is trained according to their specific placement. For instance, guards working in resorts are trained to be polite a n d h o s p i t a b l e , understanding the importance of professionalism. In contrast, guards placed in housing societies are trained for a d i f f e r e n t s e t o f responsibilities. All our guards are also trained in using firefighting equipment.”

Anil further added, “The next s t e p w a s t o s e t u p a n upmarket office. I had seen the kind of offices most security companies had, and I wanted something better. Our

o f f i c e i n c l u d e s a f u l l y equipped meeting room, a conference room, a pantry, a n d a l l t h e n e c e s s a r y facilities This professional environment not only sets us apart but also ensures we provide the best service to our clients.”

Through his meticulous planning and dedication, Anil Desai has transformed his venture into a leading security agency in Goa, demonstrating that professionalism and proper training are key to success in the industry. Today, Anil Desai boasts an impressive portfolio of over 130 clients, a testament to his dedication to trust and exceptional service. “I believe in building relationships rather than just accumulating clients,” Anil emphasized. When he first ventured into the security business, many doubted his capabilities. He then chose to grow his client base through friends and family, allowing the business to flourish. “Joining BNI was a game-changer. It significantly boosted our growth, and there was no turning back. In just four and a half years, we expanded to a large office and now employ a force of more than four hundred guards.”

Anil also spoke about the importance of creating a recognizable brand “It started with the color of our security guards’ uniforms, w h i c h i s c r u c i a l . A f t e r surveying the market, I chose Maroon & Black, inspired by the Japanese Police. Next, we created a trademark for Squad Security, incorporating an 'A' in the design, naming it A-Squad Security Company. This branding made our business stand out,” he explained.

Anil Desai sees crises as opportunities. “We launched our security agency in 2020, j u s t a s t h e C O V I D - 1 9 pandemic hit While many businesses were downsizing, I focused on employment generation As others were laying off staff, I hired more, taking advantage of the availability of affordable l a b o r B y t h e t i m e t h e pandemic receded, I had built a substantial team, having taken care of them for six months—it was a calculated risk,” he explained.

Anil also navigated the challenges of placing his security guards during the p a n d e m i c “ W i t h m o s t businesses shut down, the food sector was one of the few operating. I secured contracts with supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants, and later expanded into clubs.” Today, the demand for security services is vast, spanning government and private organizations. “The trend of private security for the w e a l t h y a n d f a m o u s i s growing, and we hold a significant share in this sector. We also provide security for major events like IFFI, the W o r l d T a b l e T e n n i s Tournament, temples, and banks. We are everywhere, and I’m here to paint the town in Maroon and Black,” Anil proudly stated.

in guiding Arman to extend his b u s i n e s s b e y o n d G o a ' s borders. "The opportunity to become part of Vibrant Goa also came through Mr. Shah. His expertise in exports and business mentoring opened new avenues for me," Arman shares. "Through the Vibrant Goa platform in 2019, I had the chance to visit GCC countries, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian nations Observing global advancements and recognizing areas where I was lagging, I ventured into exports and expanded my business internationally."

According to Mr. Bankley, the pandemic turned out to be a blessing for his business. "All m y c l i e n t s , t o w h o m I previously supplied only manganese, are leading manufacturers of batteries and safety matches. With many countries banning trade with China, they turned to me for their raw material needs," he explains. This shift led him t o s o u r c e a v a r i e t y o f chemicals in addition to manganese, expanding his product line significantly "Currently, I am exporting to more than sixteen countries with eleven products. Now, I have nine manufacturing units spread across Goa, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Belagavi," he adds.

T o d a y , M r B a n k l e y collaborates with all the leading brands in Goa. "I have all the top builders in Goa as my clients, and the business is doing very well with the grace of God," he shares This success has allowed him to e n g a g e m o r e i n s o c i a l networking and become part of various associations and organizations. "I started my business at the age of 22, and today, at 52, after a thirtyyear journey that began with

my own funds, I have built a substantial empire with nine manufacturing units and a net worth exceeding thirty crore rupees. God has always been kind, and we now have over two hundred employees across our nine units. I want to give back to society in any way I can."

Mr. Bankley's son has also joined the family business while managing his own ventures in the hospitality sector. "My son runs a chain of franchise outlets in the food industry across Goa, with over a dozen locations, including our main outlet in South Goa. I believe he has already proven his capability in a very short span of time," Mr Bankley proudly states.

Speaking about his future plans, Mr. Bankley mentioned t h a t h e n o w w a n t s t o concentrate on his parent company, ARMines. "My focus is more on exports I am concentrating on expanding to other countries that have a demand for my products, and things are moving in the right direction," he concluded.

EMPOWERING YOUTH THROUGH AGRICULTURE

Nathan D’Souza’s Inspiring Farming Journey

In a time when many of today's youth shy away from farming, leading to the transformation o f v a s t f

o concrete jungles, one young man decided to defy the trend and carve out his own path in agriculture. The Incredible Goa team had the pleasure of meeting Nathan, a trailblazer in modern farming, to uncover the inspiring details of his j o u r n e y H e r e a r e t h e highlights from our exclusive interview.

Nathan hails from the quaint village of Taleigao, nestled close to the capital city and the famous Miramar Beach

“My name is Nathan D’Souza, and I grew up in the beautiful village of Taleigao, Goa. I completed my schooling at The Rosary High School in Cujira and am currently pursuing my BBA degree from S.S. Dempo College, also in Cujira I'm now in my final year,” Nathan shares.

When asked about his foray i n t o f a r m i n g a n d w h a t motivated his decision, Nathan explained that his passion for agriculture began at the young age of 14. “My interest in farming was ignited when I discovered a barren field in

Taleigao that had remained uncultivated for over a decade,” Nathan recounts. Distressed by the neglect of such fertile land, he resolved to take matters into his own hands.

“I couldn’t bear to see the land go to waste, so I set out to rejuvenate it. My journey began with cleaning up the field and experimenting with farming techniques. To build

m y s k i l l s , I s t a r t e d b y

c u l t i v a t i n g f r u i t s a n d vegetables in our home garden and experimenting with different plant species. Challenges Faced

A m o n g t h e s i g n i f i c a n t challenges Nathan faces in Taleigao is waterlogging in the fields. “This issue needs to be tackled at its root to help many farmers return to cultivating their lands and revitalize

Taleigao Addressing such challenges requires innovative solutions and expertise. The local farmers' knowledge of traditional bandhs and water channels is vital, as many in the new generation may not be familiar with these methods.”

SOLAR ENERGY

ADOPTION IN RURAL GOA

In the heart of rural Goa, away from the bustling urban centers and picturesque b e a c h e s , a p o t e n t i a l transformation is on the horizon. The adoption of solar energy in these villages promises to revolutionize daily life and foster sustainability. With the right initiatives, these communities could soon transition from unreliable electricity to a steady, clean energy source, significantly enhancing their quality of life a n d e n v i r o n m e n t a l stewardship.

The drive for solar energy in rural Goa can be propelled by a combination of compelling f a c t o r s T h e r e g i o n ' s commitment to reducing carbon emissions aligns with global climate goals, while the challenges of inconsistent power supply in remote areas make renewable energy a practical alternative. As the cost of solar technology continues to decrease, it becomes increasingly feasible for rural households and communities to invest in and benefit from solar power.

SUSTAINABLE GOA

Envisioning solar panels on rooftops and community buildings throughout rural villages could bring about substantial improvements A steady supply of electricity could reduce reliance on kerosene lamps and noisy generators, enhancing the o v e r a l l q u a l i t y o f l i f e Extended productive hours could allow children to study after dark and adults to engage in economic activities that were previously hindered by power shortages.

The economic impact of solar e n e r g y c o u l d b e transformative as well. Solar power has the potential to energize small businesses and agricultural operations, driving local economic growth. For example, solarpowered water pumps could

r e v o l u t i o n i z e i r r i g a t i o n p r a c t i c e s , b o o s t i n g agricultural productivity and enabling farmers to thrive. Additionally, the emergence of solar enterprises could provide jobs and stimulate local entrepreneurship, further strengthening the community. In the areas of health and

education, the benefits of

s o l a r e n e r g y c o u l d b e profound. Health clinics and schools could experience improved functionality with reliable electricity. Medical equipment would operate smoothly, and students would have access to modern e d u c a t i o n a l t o o l s a n d

e n v i

T

e advancements would have a direct positive impact on h e a l t h o

t c o m e s a n d educational attainment, contributing to a higher standard of living.

Several potential success stories illustrate how solar energy could transform rural Goa. In a villages, communityfunded solar projects could provide electricity to every household. Solar street lights could enhance safety and mobility at night, while solarpowered desalination units could provide clean drinking water, addressing critical needs in the community Similarly, solar energy could empower women through the e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f s o l a r

c o o p e r a t i v e s . T h e s e cooperatives could manage a n d m a i n t a i n s o l a r installations, generating income for their members and ensuring project sustainability. Such initiatives would not only p r o v i d e f i n a n c i a l independence to women but a l s o f o s t e r a s e n s e o f community ownership and responsibility.

However, the adoption of solar energy will face challenges. Initial setup costs, though decreasing, might still be a barrier for some households. Ongoing maintenance and technical support will be essential to ensure the longevity of the systems Government schemes and subsidies could play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges The Goa State Solar Policy might offer financial incentives and support for solar installations, making it easier for rural communities to invest in solar technology. Partnerships with NGOs and private companies could further facilitate the spread of solar energy through training programs, awareness campaigns, and technical assistance.

Looking ahead, the future of solar energy adoption in rural Goa seems promising With continued support from various stakeholders, the p e n e t r a t i o n o f s o l a r technology could increase. Integrating solar energy with other sustainable practices, such as rainwater harvesting and organic farming, could create resilient and selfsufficient rural communities. I n n o v a t i o n s i n s o l a r technology, such as advanced batteries and hybrid systems, might further enhance energy security and reliability Expanding solar projects to include microgrids could p r o v i d e c o m p r e h e n s i v e energy solutions to entire v i l l a g e s , r e d u c i n g dependency on the central power grid and promoting energy independence. So, the potential adoption of solar energy in rural Goa represents a significant opportunity for sustainability a n d c o m m u n i t y empowerment. By harnessing the power of the sun, these villages could improve their quality of life and contribute to global environmental efforts As communities embrace solar energy, rural Goa could lead the way toward a more sustainable and equitable future.

GOAN CINEMA

A Rich Tapestry of Culture and Creativity

Goa, the smallest state in India, is renowned for its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage. Beyond its scenic beauty and tourism appeal, Goa harbors a burgeoning film industry that reflects its unique cultural blend of Indian and Portuguese influences. The local film industry in Goa, though not as extensive as Bollywood, has been steadily g a i n i n g p r o m i n e n c e , producing a variety of films that capture the essence of Goan life and culture.

The origins of Goan cinema can be traced back to the 1950s when the first Konkani film, "Mogacho Aunddo" (Love's Craving), was released in 1950 Directed by Jerry Braganza, this film marked the beginning of a new era in Goan entertainment. The early years saw a limited number of productions, but each film played a crucial role in preserving and promoting the Konkani language and Goan traditions.

Chikhal Kalo

GOA'S MUDDY CELEBRATION OF JOY AND TRADITION

Chikhal Kalo is one of Goa's most unique and vibrant festivals, celebrated primarily in the village of Marcel. Known for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife, Goa also holds deep-rooted traditions that reflect the rich cultural heritage of its people. Chikhal Kalo, which translates to “mud play,” is a prime example of this. Held during the monsoon season, usually in July, this festival stands out for its joyful and playful nature, steeped in ancient agrarian traditions. The origins of Chikhal Kalo lie in the community's agricultural practices. Villagers would gather to mark the beginning of the sowing season with c o m m u n a l r i t u a l s a n d celebrations. Central to the festival is the Devki Krishna temple in Marcel, where the festivities commence with prayers and offerings to Lord Krishna This celebration is inspired by the mythological tales of Krishna's playful childhood, where he and his friends would engage in games and pranks in the mud. By performing these playful activities, the villagers invoke d i v i n e b l e s s i n g s f o r a prosperous harvest and the well-being of their community. The festivities of Chikhal Kalo begin early in the morning as

villagers gather at the Devki Krishna temple. The temple priest conducts rituals and prayers, setting the spiritual tone for the day. The main event, however, unfolds outside the temple, where a large mud pit is prepared.

Participants, dressed in t r a d i t i o n a l a t t i r e , enthusiastically dive into the mud pit, engaging in a series

THE VANISHING GOAN FISHING VILLAGES

In the quiet, picturesque coastal regions of Goa, traditional fishing villages that once thrived on the abundant marine life and serene waters are now confronting an uncertain future These villages, which have sustained generations of Goans through fishing, are gradually fading away, overshadowed by the r e l e n t l e s s m a r c h o f urbanization, tourism, and environmental degradation The rich tapestry of life in these communities, woven with t r a d i t i o n s a n d a d e e p connection to the sea, is at risk of being lost forever.

The fishing villages of Goa are a testament to a way of life t h a t h a s p e r s i s t e d f o r centuries. Nestled along the coast, these villages have long been home to families who derive their livelihood from the sea. The daily rhythm of life in these villages is guided by the tides and the seasons, with fishing forming the heart of their economic and cultural activities. Traditional fishing methods, such as using handmade nets and wooden boats, have been passed down through generations, preserving a unique cultural heritage.

Luxury resorts, real estate developments, and commercial enterprises are replacing the simple homes and communal spaces of these villages As a result, many fishing families are being displaced, forced to abandon their ancestral homes and livelihoods. The rise in tourism, while beneficial to Goa's economy, has also brought challenges to these villages. Tourists flock to the beaches, often unaware of the delicate balance that sustains the local fishing communities. The demand for beachfront properties and recreational facilities has led to the depletion of coastal areas, disrupting fishing

The once plentiful catch is dwindling, pushing fishermen to venture further into the sea, risking their lives for a meager return. The effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and u n p r e d i c t a b l e w e a t h e r patterns, are particularly devastating. Coastal erosion is swallowing up land, and

being organized to reconnect younger generations with their heritage and instill a sense of pride in their roots. These efforts, though small in scale, represent a crucial step towards ensuring that the legacy of Goa's fishing villages endures.

The plight of Goa's vanishing fishing villages is a stark reminder of the need for balanced development and sustainable practices. As Goa continues to evolve and modernize, it is imperative to preserve the cultural and ecological treasures that define its identity. The stories of these fishing communities, their struggles, and their resilience must be brought to the forefront, encouraging both locals and visitors to support efforts aimed at safeguarding their future.

Can help you lose weight when combined with good eating habits or maintain ideal weight by burning excess calories and promote sense of well being.

KEEP YOURSELF FIT TO AVOID INJURIES

Muscle Soreness

Some trainers believe in the common saying 'No pain, no gain'. Whenever you start a new fitness routine you may feel a little discomfort. At most it will last for the first few days. This pain is a natural warning sign. There's nothing to worry about but you should pay attention to it.

You can start with a good exercise routine. Don't be excessive but you can push yourself a bit. After a few days muscles will get used to your new routine. Lactic acid, micro-tears and other physiological changes occur in the muscles and they become stronger than before.

Be Careful

But be careful if you are experiencing back pain, neck aches, knee joint pain and other symptoms. Then you need to consult with a specialist For sure there is some fault in the way you are doing your routine. May be you are working too hard or trying to get quick results, or you have some medical problem and that exercise is not the right one for you.

It will take some time to adjust to any new strong exercise. So it's better to start slowly. How to set your pace when it comes to exercise depends on so many factors. It varies from person to person, depending on age, experience, your earlier exercise routines and total fitness. Your muscles should get warmed up and relaxed before cranking them up. Many of your problems are caused from your muscles being too cold and not stretching. Sometimes it happens

from overextending your capacity. So take it slow!

Warm up and stretching

It's necessary to take 15 minutes for warm-up exercises which might include very mild jogging in place or jumping jacks. It helps the cardio and lung systems to work well. To get joints lubricated and muscles relaxed and gently lengthened you can do some slow and gradual stretching during this time. Be sure that you are taking sufficient time to warm up. If the warm up is too short it can easily lead to stretched or torn cartilage. It will take a long time to heal this type of damage.

Please do not try to get out and run 10 kms only two weeks after an injury, surgery or other debilitating condition The result may be dangerous and cause long-term damage. Sometimes physical therapy is needed which works to relieve discomfort. But do therapy only if it is recommended by a doctor Expert Guidance

Trying to keep fit through exercise is always an excellent idea But overdoing it is just the opposite of your goal Your aim is to improve your health and strength and not to prove that you are Arnold Schwarzenegger! Whenever you are going to begin some new activities which you are not familiar with, you need an expert's guidance An incorrect way of warming up or exercising may cause injury too. First you should know the proper way to use the weight machines. There is nothing to get

embarrassed about if you don't know the correct procedure. It's not possible for someone to know everything about exercising. Just ignore the people who laugh at you because you are unsure of how to proceed.

Outdoor Running

The environment is very important while you go through your routine. Be careful that you don't end up crashing into a wall or the person exercising next to you when you are in a rhythm or totally concentrated on your workout. When you are jogging on the road you need to pay attention to the imperfections of the surface and the people and cars around you No athletic shoe, no matter how specialized, will keep you from slipping on a muddy patch Only alertness and good reflexes can save you in this situation.

Once you achieve your comfort zone, you can increase both the time and the strenuousness of your workout. Most people fail to continue their fitness routine because of injuries incurred by working beyond their capacity. Remember the tortoise and the hare: 'Slow but steady wins the race'.
