Stephens Convention Center, Chicago is a brand-new, free-to-attend expo. “Having successfully broken the ground in Europe (Cologne, Germany) with a new annual exhibition and conference for the off-highway vehicle design and engineering community in 2017, UKi Media & Events is set to launch iVT Expo in the U.S. in 2022,” said Ram Seira, sales manager, iVT Expo.

Educational Sessions The educational conference (fee to attend) includes presentations on the design and development of highly automated and unmanned construction, mining, agricultural, industrial and off-highway vehicles. It will cover case studies and applications, testing and validation, and simulation and software. In addition, speakers will present

the latest technology and solutions to develop and enable electric and hybrid vehicle technology. Other presentations will explore next-generation cabin design and future technologies. Topics will include enhanced productivity, operator comfort, display systems, electronics, and operator and workforce safety.

The Exhibition The exhibition will showcase the latest cab designs and components, powertrains, hydraulics, materials, testing equipment and autonomous and self-guided systems know-how, as well as all the next-generation technology required for a new wave of more sustainable, electric and hybrid off-highway vehicles. “Feedback from the supplier community in North America has been fantastic,” Seira said. “Exhibitors already signed up include Autonomous Solutions Inc. Peterbilt Motors Company announced the availability of the Cummins B6.7N natural gas engine in its new medium-duty Models 536 and 537. Peterbilt’s Model 536 includes the B6.7N engine, with 200 to 240 hp and 520 to 560 pound-feet of torque available while emitting 50% lower NOx emissions than current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. The non-CDL Class 6 Model 536 is with a low cab entry height, visibility, low NVH and room for three people within the 2.1-meter-wide cab. Critical information is relayed to drivers through a 7-inch digital display located in the instrument cluster, and it features a digital card system fully integrated with the latest Peterbilt safety systems. Medium-duty trucks can be configured with the just introduced B6.7N and the L9N featuring 300 to 320 hp and 860 to 1,000 pound-feet of torque. Heavy-duty trucks including the Model 520, Model 567 and Model 579 can be outfitted with the ISX12N featuring 400 hp and 1,450 poundfeet of torque.

Jacobs Vehicle Systems, a manufacturer of engine retarding and valve actuation systems for the commercial vehicle industry, upgraded the company’s engine brake on model-year 2021 PACCAR MX-11 heavy-duty diesel engines. The electronically controlled engine brake now includes a new high-flow solenoid to facilitate faster, smoother gear shifting, resulting in simplified and smoother vehicle operation, as well as fuel consumption improvements. Jacobs’ newest engine brake is manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Bloomfield, Connecticut, and delivered to PACCAR engine plants in Columbus, Mississippi; the DAF engine plant in Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and Ponta Grossa, Brazil

Hybrid Technology for Net-Zero Carbon Mining Operations During MINExpo 2021, Rolls-Royce Power Solutions displayed a new mtu concept for a hybrid haul truck that could help cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by as much as 30%. This planned technology is based on existing mtu products and technologies: • A 12-V 2000 mining engine • An mtu EnergyPack battery system Scott Woodruff, former head of Rolls-Royce’s global mining business and current VP, oil and gas, said, “Our environment is a critical topic for the mining industry. Mining companies are leading change and holding themselves accountable with ambitious, responsible targets to reduce emissions. We will use MINExpo to discuss

with the industry how we can help them reach these targets and achieve net zero emissions.” Rolls-Royce has a plan with sequential steps for the mining industry: from existing Tier 4 technology to sustainable fuels and new technologies, such as fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines. The mtu team considers the hybrid haul truck concept evolutionary. Alexander Richter, Rolls-Royce mining application engineer and the mastermind behind the concept, said, “We envision equipping haul trucks with a combination of mtu diesel engines and batteries; our mtu EnergyPacks. The batteries are recharged by recuperating braking energy when going downhill. This stored energy ... provides power to the loaded truck when going uphill. This allows us to replace the existing engine with a downsized one, leading to huge fuel savings and a meaningful reduction in CO2 emissions.” Rolls-Royce has simulated operations with a haul truck whose mtu 16-V 4000 engine with an output of 1,865

Designed for Class 4 through Class 8 trucks and heavy-duty mobile equipment, this technology, currently undergoing the design validation process (DVP), is slated to enter pilot production programs sometime during 2023 or 2024. The SuperTurbo is a mechanically driven turbocharger that exchanges power to and from The SuperTurbo the crankshaft. According to Tom Waldron, executive vice president of SuperTurbo Technologies, “The SuperTurbo gives an engine the exact amount of air it wants wherever and whenever it wants it.” Unlike traditional turbochargers that exchange exhaust energy for compressor power, the SuperTurbo adds and subtracts power from the engine. According to Waldron, this new technology will give OEMs something they have not had before, precise air control. Control of fuel injection has been available to engineers. Now, “they can precisely control and calibrate the air as well.”|

The unit was developed for low-voltage mobile applications and is well-suited for the needs of hybrid equipment builders facing spatial constraints. The system includes a Flo-Torq gear pump packaged with an axial flux motor and controller from Omni’s Magelec subsidiary. The overall package length of 299.7 millimeters (11.8 in.) offers equipment designers a compact form to power electrohydraulic traction and auxiliary functions. Featuring a Magelec M17 air-cooled motor with SAE B mount connection, the package weighs 17.6 kilograms (38.8 lb.). The 48-V system is rated for 46 liters per minute of continuous flow with a peak pressure rating of 250 bar.

The Electric Wheel

In 1950 when LeTourneau unveiled the technology, it was a breakthrough. by Thomas Berry, Archivist, Historical Construction Equipment Association

he most efficient way to power a device varies with need, practicality and available technology. One example is the crowd mechanism of a steam shovel. This mechanism moves the dipper stick in and out through the boom. It could be powered by a steam engine on the boom. When internal combustion rendered steam obsolete, the latter became standard. No shovel was ever built with a gas or diesel engine on the boom or a drive shaft along the boom. Part of the logic behind the introduction of the electric shovel in 1919 was to replace the boiler, steam lines and the steam engines with a central motor/generator and electric motors at different positions on the machine. Among the results was the elimination of steam costs. Robert G. LeTourneau recognized the advantages of electricity to power machinery. His 1923 self-propelled scraper, the world’s first motor scraper, was powered by a gas generator and seven motors placed at all points that required power. The self-propelled scraper was efficient but shackled by a speed of one mile per hour because of 1920 technology limitations. LeTourneau again used electric power in 1944 with motors and electric controls on some Tournapull prime movers. The first application for this technology was to control steering

and was followed by scraper winches. The next breakthrough came in 1948, with experiments in electric propulsion using motors attached to the axle housings of a Model-D Electric Tournadozer. The big innovation came in 1950 when LeTourneau unveiled his electric wheel. The traction motor was mounted into the hub of the wheel being powered. Because of this, the cost, weight, limitations and inefficiencies of a mechanical drive train were eliminated. The power train consisted of a gas, diesel or butane engine powering a generator and the electric wheels. The first machine to use the electric wheel was the all-wheel-drive, allwheel-steer Tournatow. The main customer was the U. S. Armed Forces. The Tournatow was followed by several machines. Most equipment saw limited production. The consummate machine powered by the electric

wheel was the colossal Series LT-360 (Model A-8) electric-digger motor scraper. The largest and most powerful scraper ever built, it had three 72-yard, 120-ton capacity bowls. It rode on eight 60 x 68, 72-ply, 122-inch diameter tires, each mounted on an electric wheel. The four axles were arranged at the front and rear ends and at each end of the middle bowl. Two 635-hp Detroit Diesel 16V-71N engines were mounted at each axle. At 200 feet long and 19 feet wide, it may have been too big. It performed well, but no sales resulted. The one unit that was constructed was broken up and cannibalized to build other, smaller—but still huge—scrapers. Was the LT-360 too big? Not in LeTourneau’s mind. His philosophy was that a job was never too big; the machines were too small. Before he died, he drew plans for a bigger scraper: the 500-ton, 9,600-hp LT-500!|
