reating this column, I decided to look up the definition of “community” in order to inspire creative thinking around the concept. One definition said: “A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” If that doesn’t describe the equipment rental industry, I don’t know what does. As a relatively newer member to the rental club, I’ve realized how impactful this fellowship is to the industry at large. From my experience, rental business owners seem to take pride in helping their fellow business owners. For example, in various rental Facebook groups I’m in, it’s a constant stream of industry members asking questions and getting flooded with responses from their rental comrades. So, to rental, community is important and its value is unparalleled. That’s why I decided to create Rental Perspectives, our new monthly feature on page 46. Rental Perspectives focuses on the day-to-day lives and business insights of rental business owners and team members. It gives an inside look into the daily lives of your community, while allowing business owners the chance to share their insights and learn from others.

Each person, and therefore each business, has a story. This gives those individuals a voice, to share the challenges solved, lessons learned, and insights developed. Everyone in this industry has value. Speaking of community and value, this month is our ARA Show Issue, set to arrive in mailboxes ahead of the October show. With a different date and venue, this year’s show will be a little outside the norm. But the excitement to attend an in-person event again – and to connect with friends, equipment, technologies, and new colleagues – is top of mind for attendees. As Dick Detmer says on page 82, “For all that’s different, the show will still be a great opportunity to connect with others in the industry and catch up with old friends.” Through all the hardships and uncertainty of the last year, the people of the rental industry have remained determined and strong. The sense of community, the sense of “we’re all in this together,” has proved steadfast in the hearts of rental industry members. I’m interested to know: What does community mean to you? How has the rental community benefited you? Shoot me an email at asheprak@ acbusinessmedia.com. Stay strong, stay safe, and see you in Las Vegas!

MARKET WATCH STUDY: HALF OF COMPANIES MISS CYBERSECURITY THREATS Businesses are missing cybersecurity threats to their own companies in a big way. The Ponemon Institute recently published a study showing nearly half of the 1,249 IT professionals surveyed say they have no way of identifying cybersecurity risks in the early stages. The study found that: • 53% of companies find it impossible or very difficult to prevent an insider attack when data is being aggregated, a key indicator of intent of an attack. • Only 32% of companies say their organizations are very or highly effective in preventing the leakage of sensitive information. • 15% of organizations state that no one has ultimate authority and responsibility for controlling and mitigating workforce risks. • Nearly half of companies find it impossible or very difficult to prevent an insider attack at the earliest stages of the Insider Threat Kill Chain. In observance of Insider Threat Awareness Month, cybersecurity company DTEX partnered with Ponemon to better understand the growing rate of risks, especially following major breaches like SolarWinds. Recent cybersecurity studies have shown a: • 450% increase in employees circumventing security controls to intentionally mask online activities. • 230% increase in behaviors indicating an intent to steal data.
COVID-RELATED FREIGHT CONSTRAINTS, LABOR COSTS CONTINUE TO PUSH ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION COSTS UPWARD The August 2021 headline IHS Markit PEG Engineering and Construction Cost Index decreased 1.6 index points from July to 76.9, though construction costs continue to rise, according to IHS Markit and the Procurement Executive Group (PEG). For the ninth straight month, the materials and equipment sub-index remained above 50, indicating increasing prices, but the sub-index fell 4.9 points from last month to 78.7. The subcontractor labor index recorded 72.8, a 6.1 index point increase from the previous month, indicating a consensus for a quickening pace of labor costs increasing among respondents. In August, all categories within the materials and equipment index increased individually for the eighth straight month, as well,

The study showed that security threats typically follow a recurring pattern. What they refer to as an Insider Threat Kill Chain includes five steps present in most attacks: 1. Reconnaissance: When preparing for data theft, a malicious insider typically begins with research. This is where they locate the data that they would like to steal, test security controls, or, in the case of compromised credentials, where the insider will test the limits of the stolen credentials privilege. 2. Circumvention: Any attempts to bypass existing security controls provide an important indication that subsequent actions were intentional. Many organizations place too much reliance on the “locks on their doors,” however an insider typically has sufficient domain knowledge to know which doors are unlocked or simply has access to the key. though index levels have fallen further from peak levels experienced earlier in the year for most categories. • The sub-index for electrical equipment fell from 72.2 in July 2021 to 66.7 in August 2021. • The sub-index for transformers also fell from 72.2 in July to 70.0 in August. • Costs of ocean freight from both Europe and Asia to the United States officially increased for a continuous calendar year, though the pace of price increases are slowing. SKID STEER PRICES UP 30% IN THE U.S. ACCORDING TO RITCHIE BROS. Ritchie Bros.’ August Market Trends Report continues to show growing prices across all its equipment indexes, with truck tractor prices up 31% in the U.S., while medium earthmoving and vocational trucks are up 27% and 26% respectively for the three months ending July 31, 2021. Over the past decade Ritchie Bros. has seen multi terrain loader sales grow exponentially in comparison to its wheeled counterpart. In 2010 Ritchie sold roughly five times more skid steers (3,037 units) in the U.S. than multi terrain loaders (624 units). By 2020 that ratio had changed drastically, as the company sold approximately 2.5 times more multi terrain loaders (3,484) than skid steers (1,310). Interestingly, in Canada, while multi terrain loader sales have certainly grown, skid steer loaders have maintained their lead in terms of number of units sold. “Medium earthmoving equipment like skid steer loaders and multi terrain loaders are performing particularly well this year,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president for pricing at
CONSTRUCTION ECONOMY GROWS IN AUGUST DESPITE LABOR, SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES The business sector that includes construction, the services sector, saw a slight dip in its economic activity in August, but only because companies can’t find enough workers and materials are in short supply. Anthony Nieves, chair of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Services Business Survey Committee, delivered the Services ISM Report on Business on Sept. 3, saying the services sector is experiencing growth at 61.7%, but is down slightly from its historic high at 64.1% in July. “We’ve had some pull back, which was to be expected,” Nieves says. “We couldn’t maintain such a high rate ongoing, especially with the capacity constraints.” The ISM Services PMI index is a set of economic

Ritchie Bros. “According to our recent skid steer index, prices for the small but versatile machines are up 30% in Canada and 27% in the United States.” Doug Rusch, managing director of Rouse Sales, added, “The retail market for used compact-sized earthmoving
equipment, including skid steer loaders, has shown impressive strength this year, leading all other categories in price achievement. Retail values for compact-sized earthmoving equipment are up 11% since January and are now at the highest level we’ve seen in the last 5+ years.” To read more, visit forconstructionpros.com/21615333.
indicators based off surveys of private-sector companies in the services sector, which includes construction. “(Survey) respondents are saying it’s just tough filling jobs out there,” he says. “We know there’s been a challenge with the availability of containers, trucks and drivers. There’s been port congestion; throw weather into the mix, and the fact that the output upstream in the supply chain is not up to speed as far as demand, both with staffing and materials.” According to one survey respondent in the construction industry, “Material and labor shortages continue to hinder productivity. Price increases are ever-present and repetitive. Large, multinational manufacturers have had multiple price increases in the last three months.” August was the 15th straight month of growth for the sector. Prices paid by services organizations for materials and services increased in August, with the index registering 75.4%, 6.9% age points lower than July’s reading of 82.3%. MARKET WATCH ARA FORECASTS 3.5 PERCENT INCREASE FOR RENTAL EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY The outlook for equipment rental revenue, comprised of the construction/industrial and general tool segments, has improved over the last quarter. The updated second quarter forecast released by the American Rental Association (ARA) now calls for equipment rental revenue to exceed $47.8 billion in 2021, nearly a 3.5 percent increase over 2020 and greater than last quarter’s forecast that called for a 3.1 percent increase this year. Overall, the ARA forecast calls for a 9.68 percent increase in revenue in 2022 to reach nearly $52.5 billion, surpassing the equipment rental industry’s previous peak revenue of nearly $51 billion in 2019. Growth is expected to be 3.9 percent in 2023, 2.4 percent in 2024, and 3.5 percent in 2025 to total $57.7 billion. The revenue increases are fueled by the expected strong demand for construction and industrial equipment rental, particularly in 2022, when the segment’s revenues are expected to jump 11.9 percent to $38.9 billion, surpassing the record $37.7 billion in revenue set in 2019. Also, with the likely passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (IIJA) by the U.S. Congress, the future forecast for equipment rental revenue in 2022 and beyond could be even more robust. “Once final passage occurs, we will have more specific analysis built into future forecasts, but at first glance, it looks like the IIJA could increase rental revenues by about $8 billion over the eight-year spending program the IIJA authorizes,” says John McClelland, ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist. “That would roughly amount to an increase in rental revenues for construction and industrial equipment of 7.8 percent over the current forecast. While we need details on how and when the money will be spent to provide a more complete forecast on the IIJA’s impact on the equipment and event rental industry, early analysis is quite positive,” McClelland says. Scott Hazelton, director, economics and country risk, IHS Markit, says the timing of the infrastructure spending remains unclear, making it difficult to assess the rental forecast implications over time, but that the company, which provides data
12

and analysis for the ARA Rentalytics forecasting service, expects to start incorporating the details into the next quarterly rental revenue forecast update. For now, Hazelton says the outlook this quarter is more positive than the first quarter because the forecast for nonresidential construction has improved and the American Institute of Architects billings index has moved into positive territory. “When that index indicates expansion for three consecutive months, there is a high likelihood that nonresidential construction will pick up 12 to 18 months later. While this only moves the nonresidential forecast from roughly flat to modest growth, it is enough to move rental equipment demand up,” Hazelton says. In addition, he says some of the $350 billion in undesignated funds to state and municipal governments in the American Rescue Plan is expected to be used for construction projects, which also translates into more demand for equipment rental. Perhaps the most interesting figures included in the forecast concern the outlook for investment. According to ARA Rentalytics, those in the construction and industrial segment are expected to increase investment this year by 48.1 percent to $7.2 billion and another 40 percent in 2022 to reach nearly $10.1 billion, surpassing the peak industry investment in equipment of $9.95 billion in 2019. “Investment in new equipment dropped precipitously — 51 percent — in 2020 and is now expected to rebound by 48 percent in 2021 and 40 percent in 2022. This forecast is supported by our analysis of industry metrics that show increases in physical utilization, fleet age and fleet turnover,” McClelland says. “These measures suggest that there has been defleeting and aging of the fleet during the pandemic as a reaction to the resulting economic downturn. With the economy now in recovery, demand for rental equipment is increasing. With physical utilization already high, rental companies much make significant investments in new fleet to meet that demand,” he says. In addition, investment in general tool equipment is expected to increase by 19.5 percent this year to reach $3.31 billion and then grow another 22. 1 percent in 2022 to teach $4.04 billion. MARKET WATCH OSHA ISSUES UPDATED GUIDANCE TO PROTECT AT-RISK WORKERS FROM COVID-19 Updated guidance issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is intended to help employers protect at-risk workers from the coronavirus. Reflecting the latest developments in science and data, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) updated COVID-19 guidance issued July 27, the updated guidance expands information on appropriate measures for protecting employees in higher-risk workplaces with mixed-vaccination status workers, particularly for industries where there is often prolonged close contact with other workers and/or non-workers. OSHA’s latest guidance recommends that fully vaccinated workers in areas of substantial or high community transmission wear masks in order to protect unvaccinated workers. It also advises that fully vaccinated workers who have close contacts with people with COVID-19 wear masks for up to 14 days unless they have a negative coronavirus test at least three
CONSTRUCTION SPENDING UP ONLY SLIGHTLY IN JULY, BUT CLIMBS OVER 6% YEAR TO DATE The U.S. Census Bureau reports total construction spending edged up slightly (+0.3%) for July 2021 to an estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,568.8 billion, compared to June’s revised estimate of $1,563.4 billion. Longer term gains were more pronounced. Total spending saw a 6.2% increase during the first seven months of 2021 (to $883.2 billion) vs.

to five days after contact. “OSHA continues to emphasize vaccination as the optimal step to protect workers and encourages employers to engage with workers and their representatives to implement multilayered approaches to protect unvaccinated or otherwise at-risk workers from the coronavirus,” a statement from the U.S. Department of Labor noted. OSHA will continue its enforcement efforts to ensure workers are protected from the coronavirus while on the job, including through the National Emphasis Program (NEP) on COVID. The agency launched the NEP on March 12, 2021, to focus on companies that put the largest number of workers at serious risk of contracting the coronavirus, and on employers that engage in retaliation against employees who complain about unsafe or unhealthful conditions or exercise other rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. A revision issued July 8 adjusted the targeted industries to those most at risk for COVID-19 exposure, while still including healthcare and non-healthcare sectors. the same period in 2020 and is 9% higher on a year-over-year basis. Private construction spending, which makes up the bulk of the spending total, edged up just 0.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,231.0 billion vs. June’s $1,227.8 billion. However, it retained a double-digit increase (+13.6%) over June 2020. Residential construction inched up just 0.5% to $773.0 billion in July over the revised June estimate of $768.9 billion, yet is a healthy 27% above the same month in 2020. Single-family construction rose 0.9% for the month and a hearty 47.1% year over year, while new multifamily construction was flat in July 2021, but up 14.9% compared to the same month last year. Nonresidential construction fell 0.2% in July 2021 to $458.0 billion and is down 3.6% from July 2020. Not surprisingly, the segments hardest hit on a year-over-year basis were office (-29.8%), educational (-19.6%) and amusement and recreation (-11.6%), all of which have struggled most to recover from the pandemic’s impacts. MARKET WATCH HOW TO OVERCOME CONSTRUCTION SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES The way consumers purchase goods has changed over the last 18 months. Traditional methods are no longer an option. Stocks at the manufacturers and wholesalers used to be plentiful. There were also no issues with the pipelines. That was until the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) hit early in 2020.. What we’ve been left with is those pipelines clogged up and congested, while broad materials are scarce across multiple industries. Because of the pandemic, factories closed for long periods of time. A combination of that and Brexit has meant catching up has proven to be incredibly difficult during 2021 to the point that it has been estimated that construction won’t see a complete recovery back to pre-crisis 2019 levels until 2023. Sticking with that theme of purchasing though, many businesses, and particularly buyers, in the construction and manufacturing industries will recognize how difficult it has been over the last eight months. A good example of products that have been caught up in
the supply chain disruption is personal protective equipment (PPE). That shortage led to another issue -- price hikes, which are up 70% on what they were prior to the pandemic. That equipment wasn’t alone. Numerous products have seen the same increase and forced many businesses with a decision to make on whether to purchase a product for an inflated price in big volumes, in the hope that it sells through before prices could fall again. That issue is still ongoing now and has made purchasing incredibly difficult. To forecast further ahead, especially with larger suppliers, companies are placing orders for the next year or 18 months, scheduling the products so they know when they’re going to receive them. Doing so does mitigate the issue, but it certainly doesn’t solve it because there are still some products and materials that companies cannot get into their depots until Q1 or even Q2 of 2022. As well as forecasting ahead, there are other steps that businesses can take now to ease the heavy burden of pressure being caused by this supply chain disruption. To read the rest of the article, visit forconstructionpros. com/21627947.
MANUFACTURERS STRUGGLE TO MEET DEMAND; ECONOMIC ACTIVITY GROWS IN AUGUST Economic activity in the manufacturing sector grew in August, with the overall economy notching a 15th consecutive month of growth, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report on Business. The report was issued Sept. 1 by Timothy R. Fiore, chair of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. The Manufacturing PMI, or the Purchasing Managers’ Index, is a set of economic indicators based off surveys of private-sector companies. “The August Manufacturing PMI registered 59.9%, an increase of a 0.4 percentage point from the July reading of 59.5%. This figure indicates expansion in the overall economy for the 15th month in a row after contraction in April 2020,” he says. The New Orders Index registered 66.7%, increasing 1.8 percentage points from the July reading of 64.9%. The Production Index registered 60%, an increase of 1.6 percentage points compared to the July reading of 58.4%. The Prices Index registered 79.4%, down 6.3 percentage points compared to the July figure of 85.7%; this is its first reading below 80% since December 2020 (77.6%). MARKET WATCH JOB CREATION A WINNER UNDER INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN, BUT WHO WILL DO THE WORK? According to a report by S&P global, the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA) will create close to 1 million new jobs over the next decade. The analysis says that employment would be boosted by more than 880,000, with many middle-class jobs, including in construction, engineering and accounting. If it becomes law, the bipartisan, Senate-approved infrastructure bill will also increase per capita personal income in 2030 by about $100 per person, or roughly 10.5%, according to the S&P study. With fatter paychecks and more jobs, households are projected to spend an additional $677 billion over the eight-year period. Projects small and large are experiencing delays as the nation is short about a quarter-million workers. Add to that a pandemic, dramatic increases in the cost of supplies, and supply chain delays and you have an industry on shaky ground. Associated Builders and Contractors predicts the shortage will grow to one million workers in two years. “Contractors should think about labor and their relationship with technology differently,” Josh Weiss COO/ CDO, Hexagon Geosystems says. “Rather than focus on the labor they want and don’t have, focus on the available tools and how to use them to grow the productivity of existing talent. Technology optimizes workflows so less time-intensive work, or rework, is needed, increasing the capability of the existing workforce. In other words, technology is not killing
CONSTRUCTION SPENDING IS STABLE, NONRESIDENTIAL IS ‘MEANINGFULLY WORSE THAN IT APPEARS’ The total value of U.S. construction put in place in July crept up 0.3% on 0.5% growth in residential spending. Nonresidential construction spending was nearly flat, up just 0.1% on growth in public projects, according to data published today by the U.S. Census Bureau. That 0.1% was nonresidential construction’s second monthly gain over the past six months. Year-to-date, the construction industry would be suffering dramatically if not for the gobsmacking 25.3% growth in residential spending. By contrast, nonresidential spending has tumbled 7.5% compared to the first seven months of 2020. July spending was down in six of 16 nonresidential subcategories. “The nonresidential construction spending numbers are

jobs; it’s “skilling” jobs. Technology allows companies to look at projects in a new way.” In fact, McKinsey found that if construction productivity could at least catch up to the economy as a whole, the sector’s value would increase by an estimated $1.6 trillion — the equivalent to around half of the world’s annual infrastructure needs. “Today the pandemic has created a significant shift for construction firms and tech adoption is the only way forward to embrace the ‘next normal,’” Ed Williams senior team lead at ProjectPro says. “To eliminate inefficient processes that plague the industry’s productivity caused by ineffective communication and inaccurate project data, going digital is the only way forward. By leveraging construction technology one can seize the incredible financial opportunities that 2022 will usher in, as cost savings can no longer be ignored.” Until we can attract more people to the industry, we need to find ways to do more work with fewer resources. It might be time to investigate technology to help. To read the full story, visit forconstructionpros. com/21627837.
meaningfully worse than they initially appear,” said Associated Builders and Contractors’ Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “While the headline number suggests that nonresidential spending was effectively flat in July, the figure does not adjust for inflation. In real terms, the volume of construction services delivered by the nation’s nonresidential contractors declined in July. “Higher materials prices and worsening skills shortages represent primary culprits,” said Basu. “Many project owners are delaying projects due to elevated construction service delivery costs. With COVID-19 continuing to wreak havoc on supply chains, materials prices and transportation costs are set to remain elevated well into 2022. The result is that the construction recovery is significantly slower than it would otherwise be, a fact reflected in the most recent reading from ABC’s Construction Backlog Indicator.” To read more, visit forconstructionpros.com/21648167.

Little Beaver Mechanical Earth Drills Little Beaver’s Mechanical Earth Drills offer a safe and productive solution for one-man hole digging applications. Featuring a 360-rpm operating speed, the drills are faster and produce cleaner holes than similar competitive units, while the compact design allows access to areas unreachable by skid steer-mounted augers. Built to be reliable, powerful, and lightweight, the mechanical drills are ideal for a variety of industries, including rental centers, fence and sign installers, landscape and building contractors, and parks and recreation departments. The Mechanical Earth Drill is available with either a 5.5- or 8-horsepower engine and is mounted on 8- or 10-inch semi-pneumatic tires, respectively. Both versions offer a small footprint for easy access in any area and can be used on lawns, golf course greens, and other delicate surfaces without causing damage. www.forconstructionpros.com/21615239
General Equipment Company 2350 Bor-Max Series Earth Augers General Equipment Company has added 10- and 12-inch-diameter sizes to its 2350 Bor-Max Series earth augers. These new sizes are designed for use with General Equipment Company’s two-man EPIC Series hole diggers, plus competitive products utilizing 1-inch diameter auger drive connections. The Bor-Max Series earth augers feature an aggressive design, which combines cupped flighting with increased flighting pitch to produce cleaner holes with less spill back. Other benefits of this design include better soil penetration and less horsepower required to dig a hole. As a result, they are ideal for drilling through unconsolidated soil classifications, such as loams, sands, soft clays, and granular rubbles. Constructed for maximum durability, the augers incorporate a heavy, steel-walled axle to withstand bending and torque loads. The blade extends past the flighting edge to minimize flighting wear and extend service life. Also, the blade and screw bit are both heat-treated for extended service. www.forconstructionpros.com/21627149

he ARA Show will be here before we know it, and while the environment around us continues to evolve, preparations remain in full swing. The stage is set for a momentous event in Las Vegas this October. Rental store attendee registrations continue to grow, and there are currently more than 600 exhibiting companies. A couple hundred of these exhibitors are offering Show-Only Specials that attendees will only find in Las Vegas. There will be various firsttime exhibiting companies making their debut, as well as long-time companies who are

Oktoberfest… Las Vegas Style! on Tuesday evening. October may not have been everyone’s initial choice when it comes to the timing of the show, but with the demand for products, coupled with some of the current supply chain issues, it really is an ideal time to place orders and get future orders in the pipeline for 2022. The show provides a great opportunity to comparison shop and explore different supplier options for the future. The next time the ARA Show will be held is in Orlando in February 2023, so it’s critical to meet with suppliers now! Where else can you be exposed to hundreds of vendors and thousands of current and prospective rental customers all in one place?! The last 18 months have been unpredictable, and it’s understandable that some questions around protocols remain. The health and safety of our members is a top priority. The show will be abiding by all health practices required by Clark County and the State of Nevada, which currently require the wearing of face masks in all indoor, public spaces. While this news may not be ideal, we feel it’s a minor inconvenience to be able to gather in-person as a rental community. The ARA will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with our partners to execute a Clean, Safe, and Essential show for the rental industry. As we head to Las Vegas for the first time since 2013, I am very optimistic. The forecast for the rental industry is bright with revenue projected to grow nearly 10 percent in 2022, and the resilience of the rental community remains strong. The ARA Show is the largest support group the rental industry has to offer, so you truly can’t afford to miss this opportunity to reconnect with your peers this October! We’ll see you in Vegas!

FOCUSING ON THE at The 2021 ARA Show FUTURE
A
s we all know, the last 18 months or so have dramatically changed our lives. From the way we work to the way we communicate, things have been altered in ways we couldn’t have imagined. The American Rental Association (ARA) has stood by rental businesses and team members throughout these challenging times, providing new resources, guidelines, and programs—like the Clean. Safe. Essential. Program—in order to offer leadership and support. And one of their largest offerings, The ARA Show, has been a consistent beacon of community and hope throughout the rental industry. This year’s show will ‘Focus on the Future’ with a return to Las Vegas and a new venue, The Las Vegas Convention Center and Resorts World. And with a focus on reconnection, the show will deliver value through education, networking, and connecting buyers and sellers of equipment,

services, and supplies. While the show looks slightly different than years past, it will still be an in-person event that delivers relevant value for the world we’re living in. In a statement last June, Tony Conant, ARA CEO, said, “We understand that there are concerns about what the future holds. While rental stores explore new operational techniques and providing a safe environment for their customers and staff, they need information and resources. This is why The ARA Show is so valuable. It’s where attendees will find opportunities to expand their businesses, focus on learning new ways of conducting business, and come together as a community.” Here is what you can expect from some of the exhibitors at this year’s Rental Show.

Doosan Portable Power
Doosan Portable Power will be exhibiting Doosan Evolution Series air compressors, which the company released in spring 2021, at booth 309 in the South Hall. The Evolution Series includes a model designed for the rental industry, the C185WDO-T4F, which produces up to 185 cfm at 100 psi. The C185 contains the latest Doosan engine with advanced Tier 4 Final technology and a new, upgraded fuel system designed specifically for reliable operation on dusty jobsites. BOOTH #309
Felling Trailers
Felling Trailers released an enhanced fender design for their ground-level loading EZ-Tilt trailers. The new EZ-Tilt fender design offers a similar profile to Felling’s drop deck equipment trailer fenders, opening from the top to allow clearance for the wheels when the trailer is lowered to the loading position. The mechanism for lifting the top of the fender is the wheels/tires themselves. As the axles (rotating torsion axles) rotate, lowering the tilt bed to the ground, the wheels/tires push up against the top of the fender, lifting it and providing the needed clearance. The main body of the fender is constructed out of a heavy gauge material to maintain the structural integrity throughout the trailer’s life. BOOTH #601

RENTAL PERSPECTIVES //
By Alexis Sheprak
RENTAL BUSINESS Aims to EXCEED EXPECTATIONS
In this first edition of Rental Perspectives, Rental Editor Alexis Sheprak speaks with Patrick Peruchietti, owner of The Rental Branch in St. Joseph, Michigan.
W
hen I set out to create Rental Perspectives, I had no idea what the journey would look like. All I knew was I had an idea that I was passionate about and a job that would allow
me to chase it. I started reaching out to companies in my area and got some timid emails in return, questioning the feature and wondering if it was a real opportunity or something else. With only a couple confirmations, I was stumped. So, I started testing the waters in other areas of Michigan – even
46

branching out to places like Ohio and Florida – before a cheerful email arrived in my inbox. It read, “Thank you for reaching out. I would be interested in this opportunity!” and it was signed by Patrick Peruchietti, owner of The Rental Branch in St. Joseph, Michigan, three hours away from my homestead. I emailed him back less than an hour later, and that was that. The first Rental Perspectives was born. What I would learn throughout the experience of emailing Pat was how kind, thoughtful, and genuine he is. He

was ready for anything I threw at him, quick to lend a hand and supply an answer. And that honesty and compassion for others shined through in his answers when I asked him about his business. A business that he didn’t start, but acquired a few years ago and helped turn it into what it is today. The Rental Branch was started in 1996 by brothers, Mike and Kelly Branch. While the Branches had had a
48
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021

lot of success with the company, they started to feel that after 20 years, it was time for something new. Luckily, after a 30-year career in banking, Peruchietti was feeling the same way. He started looking for a new opportunity, wanting to purchase an existing business. The Rental Branch fell into his lap in 2015 from a post on social media, and he was able to utilize his prior experience to take a chance.
“As we started the due diligence for the opportunity, the commercial lending experience was useful to fully analyze the financial statements and the 30 years of managing people was a big asset,” Peruchietti says. “The area that was completely new was the equipment, and that learning curve continues to this day!” And the rest, they say, is history. Today, the Rental Branch rents everything from small lawn-andgarden tools to large earthmoving equipment. They’ve even gotten into the decorative concrete space. So, what has Peruchietti learned along the way? Let’s find out. Q. What does a typical workday look like for you? Run us through your day. A: Every day is different. Our mornings are usually busiest with customers renting equipment or bringing equipment back from the
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
9/10/21 5:03 PM
previous day. Actually, Mondays and Fridays are busiest since our rental policy on Saturdays is whatever the customers pick-up on Saturday is due back Monday morning for a one-day rent. If the sun is shining and/or it’s not raining, our days are filled with phone calls and walk-ins inquiring into the availability of equipment. We have informal meetings as needed throughout the day and week, and we are all communicating what needs to be done throughout the day to make sure we’re all on the same page. Q. What’s the most important tool, technology, or development that helps you run your business? A: It’s a little out of the ordinary, but it’s how we treat our customers! We can have the best, fanciest equipment or the most state-of-the-art systems there are, but if we don’t focus on the customer, we are in BIG trouble. And having equipment that is available and reliable also helps! Q. What do you wish you knew when you first started? A: Just how expensive it is to add new equipment to your inventory/fleet. Q. What aspects of the rental industry do you enjoy most, and why? A: Working with customers, and trying to meet and, if we can, exceed their expectations. It really comes down to developing relationships with our customers and vendors. In building a strong relationship with our customers, we can better withstand the unfortunate times when our equipment breaks down. And our vendors can be our biggest allies in getting parts we need to keep our equipment running, especially these last two years. Q. What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner so far?

ADD ONLINE RENTING
Why you Need to

Why you need to add online renting to your business – and how to lay a strong foundation for achieving rental e-commerce success
R
enters come in many flavors. As such, not all want to interact with you in the exact same way. Some want to do business by phone. Others want to deal face-to-face. However, convenience-oriented customers are increasingly showing a preference for making equipment rental arrangements on the internet. Their desire is to use a computer, tablet, or smartphone to digitally select the rental equipment they need and then fill out the necessary forms, submit required documents, and tender payment—all electronically. This should come as no surprise, since the number one way that prospective renters discover enterprises like yours in the first place is through Google and other Internet search platforms, according to a report presented at ARA RentalTech 2020. Another source (ahem, Rental) calculates that as many as 97 percent of consumers now go online to locate suppliers of the goods they seek and, further, that as many as 80 percent of them expect to be able to view

products online before making a transaction decision. If you yourself own an Internet-connected device, then you very likely already know what online shopping and e-commerce are about. But in case you’ve been living as a castaway on a deserted island for the past 25 years and are just now making your way back to civilization, here’s what’s changed: Consumers are now able to fully patronize businesses without stepping foot inside a physical store, showroom, or sales office. Thanks to technology, today’s consumers never have to leave the comfort of their home to browse the aisles, compare prices and quality, make reservations, and pay the bill. Indeed, one of the biggest reasons why you should add online/e-commerce renting as a complement to your traditional way of doing business is that consumers love and expect it. A second major reason is that your competitors are adopting it and, with it, positioning themselves to leave you in the dust. The top five equipment rental companies have seen the

writing on the wall and, consequently, now offer online/e-commerce renting in concert with an array of associated cyber-services. United Rentals, for example, reported recently that its digital accounts were multiplying at double the rate of the traditional type (United Rentals Q2 Investor Presentation). Then there’s Home Depot, another company with a massive online rental presence. Its customers can now use the Internet to rent equipment and electronically arrange for pickup from any of the chain’s 1,300 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Quality of the User Experience is Key You can join the market leaders and make the move to online/e-commerce equipment rentals relatively easily, provided you already use computers to help you operate your business (if not, you’ll need to start from scratch, but, fortunately, going from zero to automated is a simple and straightforward process these days). Success with online/e-commerce renting hinges first and foremost on your ability to offer your customers a quality experience every time they pay a virtual visit to your business. It starts with your website. It needs to be fully modern in appearance, easy to navigate, and delightfully functional, regardless of whether the visit is conducted using a desktop computer or
52
a pocket-sized mobile device. Also, your website needs to be optimized for search so that consumers using Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other services will be able to find you when they go looking online for rental equipment. Additionally, you’ll need to install a rental platform on your computer – ideally one that’s cloud-based that provides: ■ A virtual shopping cart ■ Plenty of checkout functionality ■ A robust payment gateway ■ Electronic signature collection ■ Proof-of-insurance upload capability ■ Customer access to orders via a password-protected portal ■ Automated email confirmations, reminders, and other notifications ■ Integration with your backend system to manage and approve incoming online orders Recognize that rental e-commerce is unlike pure e-commerce (like Amazon), and as such, is more challenging to conduct. For example, while returns are a fact of life for both rental and pure e-commerce businesses, only in the case of the former is every transaction supposed to end with a return. That’s why you need to use an e-commerce system expressly designed for the equipment rental field — otherwise, you’ll struggle to deal with returns and the unique

However, before you stage a grand opening of your online/e-commerce operation, you should verify that users can look forward to a quality experience. Do this by putting yourself in the shoes of a first-time visitor. You need to experience your site through their eyes and emotions. A good way to begin is to have each member of your leadership team go online and visit your website. Have them test drive it. Afterward, debrief them by asking what they thought about the experience. What did they love about it? What did they find frustrating? Use your leadership team’s feedback to modify your site accordingly. Once you’ve sanded off the rough edges, invite members of your family and trusted friends to try out the site and rent something from it. Ask them for their reaction to the experience or what they wish could have been better about it. Ask if they would have preferred to
www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL
9/10/21 5:17 PM
visit your store or office in person, and if so, why. After analyzing their inputs and further modifying your site, visit the online/e-commerce site of a company in an adjacent rental industry. For example, run through renting a car from Hertz or Avis. Take note of how your experience there compares to the experience that awaits customers at your own site. Adjust your site further if doing so would improve the way your customers can interact with your brand online. Finally, collect user stories about different rental experiences. Gather these from conversations you have with peers, colleagues, customers, and even random strangers you encounter while walking the dog or grabbing a coffee. This will help you detect opportunities that might serve your digital customers in new or improved ways.
E-Commerce: The Smart Play If you utilize computer technology to monitor your inventories, keep track of reservations, and manage your books, then there’s no reason not to level-up your game by taking fuller advantage of your system’s
capabilities—one of which is online/e-commerce renting. By making online/ e-commerce renting a focus, you can increase your potential for success as measured by number of customers, size of revenues, and—most important—profitability. Online rental transactions represent one more tool in your arsenal for serving your customers. Consumers now shop online for practically everything, and practically everything can be acquired online. Shouldn’t those who patronize your enterprise be able to do business with you the way they prefer? The answer is a resounding yes.

How AUGMENTED REALITY SOLVES CHALLENGES on Connected Jobsites
I
n today’s world, we’re inundated with information and notifications all the time. At work, the flood of questions, instructions, and data is just as constant. And everyone in the construction industry is feeling the impact as modern jobsites present a new set of challenges related to interpreting machine data, improving worker productivity, and increasing equipment utilization — but new technologies like augmented reality can help. What is augmented reality? It’s a digital solution that can streamline jobsite operations. It enables users to determine the right equipment for the job, can improve machine service, and enhance operator knowledge and productivity. With these capabilities, this technology can alleviate some of

the most common challenges in the construction industry today. CHALLENGE #1 – SIMPLIFYING THE DATA
Data overload. It’s what happens when there’s so much data available that you don’t even know where to start to find the answers you need. With so much data at our fingertips, it’s become increasingly difficult to access the right information at the right time. Using an augmented reality app, you can get on-demand, digital access to information specific to a machine or your work area without ever leaving the jobsite. For example: ■ Operators can scan decals and read them in their native language.
CHALLENGE #2 – RECRUITING THE NEXT GENERATION

Service technicians in the construction industry have a valued and desirable skillset. However, studies indicate future generations have little desire to enter the field. In fact, 64 percent of Millennials said they wouldn’t consider working in construction, even if you paid them $100,000 or more. As many construction workers are at or near retirement age, recruiting the next generation of workers seems like a daunting task. However, emerging technologies like augmented reality have the capability to attract younger workers (you know, those people who are more accustomed to using technology in their daily lives) to the construction industry. Using technology to assist newer workers with formerly cumbersome tasks can also be a benefit for technology-driven Millennials and Generation Z or even those turning to constructions as career change options. Augmented reality can also help drive efficiencies when workforce numbers are limited. For example, having access to service information

without needing to reference a manual or make a call streamlines a technician’s job. This enables them to fix issues more quickly and move on to the next task.
contracts. Augmented reality can help rental businesses drive efficiencies while addressing the need for more workers and more utilization.

CHALLENGE #3 – RAISING UTILIZATION RATES & ROI
The most important factor to the success of a rental company is equipment utilization. The more days a piece of equipment remains in the field working for a customer, the more money it brings in for the business. Keeping machines in use means making sure operators have the tools they need to operate machines safely. Using augmented reality, operators can scan a machine’s control panel and double-check control functions, translated into their native language. Operators can also scan decals and see translations of the decals to make certain they are following safety protocols. Incorrect equipment specification and delivery can also impact a machine’s utilization. When equipment is too large or too small for the worksite space, or when it cannot reach the required heights for the work, the productivity of the end-user is affected and the utilization rate of the machine drops, which negatively impacts the rental company’s bottom line. Thus, having a suite of augmented reality tools that can confirm the size and fit of both equipment and accessories before they’re delivered helps lower total cost of ownership. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says the construction industry is well-positioned to recover postCOVID-19. Knowing this, rental and construction companies should prepare themselves for future

The UNEXPECTED
EQUIPMENT CHALLENGES
Rental is Facing in 2021
Here are three ways 2021 has tested the rental industry, and what we can do about it.
T
ake a moment to remember where you were in March 2020 when the pandemic took hold in the U.S. I vividly remember arriving at CONEXPOCON in Las Vegas, well aware of COVID-19, but not yet recognizing the
magnitude of its impact. Just days later, I left CONEXPO with a very different feeling and outlook for the weeks, months, and year ahead. Now that this year is quickly coming to a close, I think it’s safe to say that 2021 will be remembered as
another unique year. Perhaps not as profound as the pandemic-focused 2020, but this year is one that has been marked by challenges even industry veterans have never seen — myself included. While tough times make it easy to look through the lens of pessimism, remember this: with challenge comes opportunity. Here are three primary ways 2021 has tested the rental and construction industries, and what we can do about it.
1. New Equipment Availability
RDO Equipment
There is perhaps no hotter topic right now than new equipment availability—actually, the lack thereof. The combination of supply chain disruptions, labor challenges, high steel prices, electronic component shortages, high demand, and a slow rebound from 2020 are all contributing to it being extremely tough to get new machines. Gone are the days when you could go to an equipment dealership and buy a machine off the lot. Inventory is low while wait times are at historic highs. According to the June FCP article, “Manufacturers Report Longest Supplier Lead Time Since 1987,” lead times are the highest they’ve been in nearly 35 years.
This current equipment availability scenario is a great opportunity for companies to strengthen relationships with equipment dealer partners.

2. Used Equipment Availability Not surprisingly given the market demand, the availability challenges have trickled down into the used equipment market, too. When it comes to dealer used equipment fleets, RDO and other dealers I have spoken to are light on used machines for sale. Auctions are also seeing low numbers of machines. “We are seeing a tight supply environment caused by low inventory levels and continued supply chain issues hampering OEMs production levels,” said Kari Taylor, chief revenue officer, Ritchie Bros. That equipment scarcity has affected equipment pricing. According to Ritchie Bros., retail values for used equipment have been rising over the course of the summer, with pricing raising 5 percent in the last 90 days and 8 percent since January. In fact, retail values are rapidly approaching levels not seen

3. Labor Availability The labor shortage is a very real problem and, if you can believe it, there are even more challenges companies are now facing when looking to hire and retain talent.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
While this is a challenge for buyers in the market for pre-owned machines, the opportunity here really is for sellers. For those looking to move used machines, it is a seller’s market. THE ACTION:
To ensure you get the maximum value from used machines, read my article from April called, “Best Practices for Getting the Greatest Value When Selling Used Equipment,” which shares several tips and best practices when selling used equipment. The key tip is to find out what equipment is worth, and there are a few ways to do that: ■ Review recent auction results ■ Have machines inspected by

pressing on rental businesses, construction companies, and equipment dealers. We are no longer just competing against the perceptions of the industry; companies are now competing against employers across multiple industries that are trying to hire from the same pool more than ever.

Our industry continues to work toward a solution to this challenge. The
Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) is one of the larger dealer organizations with an active focus on workforce development. My colleague, Marshall Anderson, who has worked in the industry with RDO for 20 years, is an AED board member and passionate about this topic. I asked him for his thoughts on the biggest opportunity to attract and retain workers. Without hesitation, Marshall said, “Tell our story.” That is a statement I agree with 100 percent. We, as a united team in the rental equipment and construction industries, have an opportunity to showcase the industry and appeal to jobseekers in new ways. One of the “benefits” to us that came out of the pandemic was construction being classified as

an essential business. The layoffs, furloughs, and other tough realities other industries faced did not hit the construction industry as hard. In fact, many companies found themselves busier than ever and workers secure in their jobs. Furthermore, Marshall noted that many people do not truly realize all the opportunities that exist in the industry. “If you want to work with your hands, we have something for you. Want to manage a team? You can do that. No interest in working in an office? No problem,” he stated. “Getting into the industry opens so many doors and opportunities for different careers. Dealers, contractors, everyone allied to this industry needs to make sure jobseekers know all that.”

3 Takeaways for 2021
While hiring new people is always the first thought when we talk about the labor shortage, it is equally important to keep great team members. You first step is to retain: ■ People are the most valuable assets in a company ■ Acknowledge the value of people ■ Take good care of people The second step is to attract. Do your part to tell the story of the good pay, job security, and wide variety of careers that come with this industry: ■ Shout it from the rooftops ■ Share on company social media channels ■ Get out to career fairs ■ Always be showcasing the industry
There are three key things to know in 2021 and to take away as we start looking at 2022: ■ Know what equipment you need and what your options are if the first choice isn’t available ■ Know what your equipment is worth ■ Know what people are worth Keep these three areas top of mind and be proactive to overcome the unexpected challenges 2021 threw our way.

3 SIGNS YOUR TRAILER NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED A trailer in need of repair can be dangerous for you, your business, and those on the road with you. It’s a good idea to know the signs that your trailer needs repair before it’s too late.
O
wning a trailer comes with plenty of benefits, whether you use it for work to haul your equipment to and from jobsites or for renting out to your customers. While trailers are great when you need them, they also require regular maintenance and occasional repairs. Without the proper maintenance, you may end up dealing with a costly trailer repair.
Know When to get Your Trailer Serviced A trailer in need of repair can be dangerous for you and those on the road with you. It’s a good idea to know the signs that your trailer needs repair before it’s too late. Let’s take a look at some of the indicators for when your trailer needs to be repaired and some of the most common repairs you could end up dealing with.
HARD TO STOP
When it becomes difficult to stop your trailer, it’s time to check your braking system and axles for repair needs. If you suspect the brakes aren’t working or would just like to check them for some preventative maintenance, it’s a relatively easy task. First, lift the trailer up on jack stands. Then, whether they’re electric or hydraulic brakes, pull the breakaway and try to spin the wheels. The wheels should be locked up. If the wheels can turn, then further diagnosis would be necessary. If the trailer is air brake equipped, it’s common to hear an audible air leak within a braking system, but any issues you notice stopping the trailer need to be taken seriously. If you are still struggling to get your trailer to stop, it could also be a sign of a bent axle or another needed repair. Depending on how the trailer is acting, you may need to take off one of the tires to further investigate and discover the issue.

FAULTY LIGHTING
Just about every trailer comes equipped with lights and wiring, and sometimes it needs to be repaired. If the lights are flickering or not working, this can be a significant safety issue. You may be dealing with something as simple as a blown fuse, a loose connection, or, something as severe as faulty wiring or electrical shorts. TIRE FAILURE
Tire maintenance is undoubtedly the most critical safety component on a vehicle. Where the rubber meets the road affects traction, handling, steering, stability, and braking. Because of this, a sudden tire failure can have serious consequences, especially if it occurs at highway speeds. Many tires today are capable of going thousands of miles or more — provided they are properly installed, maintained, and inspected regularly. With proper care, tire maintenance, and “normal” use, most tires will go the distance without a problem. But sometimes tires fail. When the trailer starts to pull your vehicle to one side or another, you might have a tire issue. Before each tow, you should check your trailer’s tire pressure and inspect it for wear. During the inspection, you might notice a crack or bulge in one of the tires. If this is the case, it’s time to get your trailer tires checked out and changed before you end up stranded on the side of the road. Also, trailer tires may be worn out even though they have plenty of treads left. This is because trailer tires have to carry a lot of weight all the time, even when not in use. It’s actually better for the tire to be rolling down the road than to be idle because during use, the tire releases lubricants that are beneficial to tire life. So, using the trailer tires often also helps prevent flat spots from developing. But to do that requires proper maintenance. For starters, it is recommended to carry a tire pressure gauge in your tow vehicle. Secondly, pay attention to these key terms: Underinflation: Check your tire’s sidewall for recommended PSI (Max Permissible Inflation Pressure). If tire pressure is lower than recommended PSI, take note of the difference between measured pressure and correct pressure, then add the missing pounds of air pressure to each tire that is
64
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021

underinflated. Overloaded: Check tire placard, know your capacities, and on the tire face is listed the Load Range as C, D, E, G, etc. The Load Range tells you what the weight capacity of your tire(s) is. Surpassing this specified load limit can result in tire failure. Potholes and other Road Hazards: Hazards on the road can impact the internal structure of the tire and be the cause of a blowout in months to follow. Weather Checking: If a trailer sits stationary and is exposed to the environment for extended periods of time like weeks, months, etc., the tire’s surface can start to crack. This typically occurs on the sidewalls or at the base of the tread grooves causing weather checking or ozone cracking. If this is observed, then it’s time to start looking into replacing the tires. Lack of Maintenance: i.e. all of the above The most common trailer repairs you will encounter will have to do with your tires, but beyond that, there are other common wear parts that will need to be repaired or replaced, such as: ■ Hub replacement ■ Bent axles ■ Repacking bearing ■ Wiring/lighting repair Anytime your trailer isn’t towing normal, you want to diagnose the problem. Sometimes, it’s as simple as inspecting the trailer and finding the issue. But you should always complete a pre-trip walk around before each use.

SAFETY ZONE Can you put regular car tires on a trailer? Why? No, regular car tires cannot be put in a trailer. This can be dangerous. Tire tread on car tires is different than the tread designed for trailers, which can cause irregular wear on the tire and will blow. Load ratings are also carefully chosen for car or truck tires and completely differ from trailer tires.

Felling Trailers
6 Common Trailer Tire Questions Felling Trailers’ parts and service team field a lot of questions on parts and trailer repairs each day, with the most popular being about trailer tires. Here are the five most common trailer tire questions and the answers from Fellings’ Trailer Tires Parts & Service experts.
How long do trailer tires last?
Felling Trailers
Trailer tires can last three to four years or 10,000 to 12,000 miles. The tire life may vary depending on the tire’s quality, the type of roads and terrain it travels on, and the load weight that is being carried.
The load range is the load capacity of the trailer tire. A tire’s load range is located on the sidewall of the tire. The load range is rated with a single letter, such as B, C, D, etc. If you have two tires of the same size, but one with a load range of B and D, the D range tire will have a higher weight capacity. Keep in mind that going to a higher capacity tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer.

design, it is designated to carry more load than a P or LT tire. Tread patterns between the two are also specific to their applications. STs have an equal volume of air space, and LT tires are sometimes used on larger trailers due to their stiff sidewalls. As a rule of thumb though, you want to stick with ST trailer tires for your trailer. That’s what they are made for.
Do you need to balance your trailer tires? No, balancing your trailer tires is not Light Truck Tire Diagram
necessary. Trailer tires are meant to support a load! You are more likely to feel an imbalance in your vehicle than a trailer. Trailer tires are designed to support the load that is carrying, not providing a smooth ride.
How do you prevent dry rot on trailer tires? Dry rot happens when the tires sit in the sun over a long period of time. Covering your tires should prevent major dry rot issues. UV exposure and oxygen are the two major degradation factors for tires.
Felling Trailers
What is the difference between a passenger tire (P) vs. a trailer tire (ST)? ST stands for “special trailer tire.” P or LT stands for “passenger” or “light truck” tire. Because of an ST tire’s heavier

5 TIPS to Prevent Injury WHEN LOADING Construction EQUIPMENT ON A TRAILER Trailers are simple pieces of equipment, but there are potential dangers if you aren’t using your head
E
veryone says it: use common sense. The problem is while we all know we should, not everyone pays attention to it, and some aren’t aware of what common sense even means. Common sense is another term for common knowledge, but if you haven’t been introduced to a particular situation, you may not know what is commonly known. Trailers are a fairly low-tech, lowmaintenance piece of equipment. Because of this, people don’t necessarily pay attention to the little things that could arise when it comes to safely working around them. Here are five things to consider to avoid injury when using a trailer.
Secure the hitch Most people realize that in order to pull a trailer, you’ll have it connected to a tow vehicle. Forgetting to lock the hitch only leads to bad things. A trailer disconnecting from the tow vehicle is one thing, but something else people don’t often think about is that the trailer must be securely hitched to the tow vehicle while loading and unloading equipment. When equipment is moved behind the back axle, all of the weight ends up at the rear of the trailer. If the hitch isn’t secure, the front of the trailer can pop up and damage the tow vehicle and trailer, not to mention the equipment you are trying to load or even the operator. Lift ramps with your legs Back injuries are common, but they can become less common simply by using proper lifting techniques. Do not attempt to bend over and lift up a ramp with your back muscles, even if the ramp is equipped with helper springs. Lifting with your legs is the proper method and provides much more strength. It’s also easier.

Avoid slick surfaces Common knowledge tells us that “slippery when wet” means we should be careful around wet surfaces, but sometimes surfaces can be slippery even when they are dry. Surfaces can get smooth over time, and steel surfaces could be slippery simply from the soles of your footwear. There could be oil or sand on the deck surface. Slippery doesn’t just relate to you, but also to your equipment. If your equipment tends to slip on steel or wood, you should look into traction materials, such as star-plate or rubber mats. Be cautious when walking or loading equipment on a trailer deck, even if it is not wet. Stay clear of pinch points You only have one chance to be safe

when working around heavy equipment. NineFingers Joe is now EightFingers Joe because he wasn’t paying attention to his hand position when someone was driving a skid-steer loader onto a tilt-bed trailer. It doesn’t even need to be that blatant. Simply chaining equipment to tie-downs can be a finger-pinching experience. Hitches, toolbox lids, ramps, suspensions, and parking jacks are all pinch areas to be aware of. Take a little extra time to make sure your finger, feet, and face are out of the way when working around a trailer. Don’t lick the battery terminals If anyone has ever asked you to stick your tongue on a 9-volt battery, you know the unpleasant sensation. I know you aren’t going to stick your tongue on a 12-volt trailer battery – that’s just common sense – but it illustrates that common sense should also tell you that whenever you’re working around electricity you should disconnect the battery power before you repair a wire or clean out a terminal. That’s mainly the point; think about safety when working around electricity.

Common sense is just wisdom Wisdom is the result of knowledge plus experience. You can read about something, and be told about something, but to experience working
with something adds up to wisdom. Using these five common-sense practices will give you the wisdom to safely work with a trailer and help you avoid injury.
Trailer Safety Tips from Towmaster Trailers Rental spoke with Chris Pokornowski, director of sales and product management, and Arin Laugtug, western sales territory manager, at Towmaster Trailers about their top trailer safety tips and what to pay attention to when securing loads. What are the major risks when it comes to transporting equipment? Poor loading or unloading is responsible for nearly 50% of heavy equipment transport injuries. What are your top five safety tips for trailers? • Know the weights and towing capacity of your tow vehicle and trailer. • Stay up to date on regular maintenance • Correctly hook the trailer to the truck • Make sure your weight is properly distributed • Do a full walk-around before leaving to check for any abnormalities Why is hitch height critical to proper transport? Proper hitch height establishes correct load placement. We recommend a 2-inch raise at the front of the trailer. What should rental businesses be considering or paying attention to when it comes to properly securing loads? Most of the 50 states require a four-point tie down. Make sure your chains and binders are the proper size and match. There’s a number on the chain and the binder that you need to make sure match. What questions are important for rental houses to ask their customers before a trailer rental? The most important question to ask is, “Does the customer have a proper tow vehicle?” How does maintenance play into trailer safety? Poor maintenance creates safety hazards on the road. Lastly, what’s one piece of advice that you would like to give our readers about trailer safety? Arin: Drive the speed limit and be alert. With equipment hauling, you will be driving 7 to 8 tons of iron down the road, and you want to be very careful when transporting. Chris: I want to reinforce the importance of having the proper tow vehicle and hitch height. These two pieces are very critical when it comes to towing safety.

BIG DATA is Taking RENTALand
Construction to
NEW HEIGHTS
B
oth the rental and construction industries produce vast amounts of data every day. As these industries expand, huge data repositories continue to fill with information on everything from blueprints and machine specs to communications and cost estimates. Unfortunately, these repositories are often unstructured and difficult to access without the right tools. That’s why technology created to harness big data in the world of construction is so important. “Big data” refers to any large or complex set of information that requires advanced analytics systems to process and manage. This information can come from multiple structured or unstructured sources, like cameras, sensors, mobile devices, and log files. The value of big data is expected to increase by $30 billion in 2021 and 2022, making it one of the most valuable commodities in the world. Every industry can benefit from big data analytics, and most are working to adopt the latest big data processing and storage tools to stay ahead of the game.
Despite its occasional hesitancy to adopt new methods and technologies, the construction industry experienced a recent spike in innovation due to an influx of big data technology. Read on to learn how big data is transforming the rental and construction industries.
How is Big Data Used? Big data is being used in every stage of the construction process to increase efficiency and productivity. Data analytics tools are designed to pull information from large data repositories and make it accessible to everyone involved in the construction process, including business owners, contractors, renters, technicians, and clients.
Construction Data Analytics: Stats and Trends Big data is at the forefront of innovation in the construction industry, and it will continue to increase in popularity as the construction process becomes more digitized. Some of the most relevant big data technology stats and trends include: ■ The big data market is expected to reach $99.31 billion in 2021. (Forbes) ■ Big data increases a business’s chance of making better strategic decisions by 69%. (BARC) ■ Companies that utilized big data analytics reported an 8% increase BigRentz

in revenue. (BARC) ■ 14% of construction companies want to increase their online analytics usage. (Sage) ■ 57% of construction companies want access to consistent financial and project data. (Sage) ■ 97.2% of organizations are investing in big data and AI. (NewVantage) In an industry that is notoriously hesitant to adopt new technology, big data is changing the game for construction companies looking to increase efficiency, collaboration, and worker safety on jobsites. As data analytics tools continue to advance and become more accessible, companies of all sizes can benefit from the power of big data.

INDUSTRY UPDATE ARA WINS ANSI MEMORANDUM FIGHT FOR MEWPS The American Rental Association (ARA) has won two separate appeals before the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Standards Review, ultimately forcing the A92 committee to remove all reference and requirements for a Manual of Responsibility (MoR) to be placed on mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). This means that owners of MEWPs do not have to
maintain any MoR past or present on any MEWP going forward. “This is a huge victory for the equipment and event rental industry,” says John McClelland, ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist, as well as the ARA’s main representative on the A92 committee. “Eliminating the MoR requirement will save our industry millions of dollars going forward. In addition, our appeals have established a precedent making it clear that no ANSI committee can make such a requirement without running afoul of ANSI’s commercial terms.” The ANSI A92 Committee published its standards for MEWPs on Aug. 12, 2020. The suite of standards has been in development since 2010, but they have been delayed due to appeals filed by ARA over the inclusion of an MoR that was initially required to be placed and maintained on each machine. ARA successfully argued that the MoR was a violation of ANSI’s commercial terms because it was a copyrighted document that was only available from the Scaffolding Access Industry Association (SAIA), which also is the secretariat of the A92 committee. Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM) and Deere have announced plans to dissolve their longstanding joint venture in the Americas. The move comes as Hitachi moves to “determine its own destiny in the Americas,” according to HCMA CEO Alan Quinn, with plans for new equipment, technologies, and an expanded dealer presence in the Americas. The dissolution of the joint venture will be completed Feb. 28, 2022. At the same time, HCM is announcing that HCMA will assume all product and service operations for the Americas in spring 2022. HCMA will continue to be a whollyowned subsidiary of the Hitachi Construction Machinery Group. HCMA is planning to add more than 60 new local positions to strengthen its North American headquarters in Newnan, Ga. Details from Deere The origins of Deere and Hitachi’s joint venture reach all the way back to an original supply relationship established in the early 1960s. After nearly three decades of working together, the two companies entered the joint venture in 1988, with plans to produce excavators in Kernersville, N.C. In 1998, Deere-Hitachi expanded the relationship to include the production of forestry swing machines at Deere-Hitachi Specialty Products in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. In 2001, John Deere and Hitachi combined their marketing and distribution efforts in the Americas. In 2011, excavator manufacturing was expanded with the addition of the Deere-Hitachi Brazil factory in Indaiatuba, Brazil. According to Deere: • John Deere will acquire the Deere-Hitachi joint-venture factories in Kernersville, NC; Indaiatuba, Brazil; and Langley, B.C. • John Deere will continue to manufacture Deere-branded construction and forestry excavators currently produced at the three Deere-Hitachi factories. These locations will discontinue production of Hitachi-branded excavators. John Deere will continue to offer a full portfolio of excavators through a supply agreement with Hitachi. • John Deere’s marketing arrangement for Hitachi-branded construction excavators and mining equipment in the Americas will end; Hitachi will assume distribution and support for these products. “For many years, John Deere and Hitachi enjoyed a mutually successful partnership in the Americas,” says John Stone, president, John Deere Construction & Forestry Division and Power Systems. “As we turn the page to a new chapter of Deere-designed excavators, we remain committed to supporting our customers of today and tomorrow.” To read the full article and see what Hitachi’s plans are, visit forconstructionpros.com/21615312.

INDUSTRY UPDATE DOOSAN INFRACORE ACQUISITION BY HYUNDAI HEAVY INDUSTRIES COMPLETED The sale of Doosan Infracore to Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Co. (HHIH) has officially closed. Doosan Infracore now becomes a subsidiary of the newly created Hyundai Genuine (HG) group alongside Hyundai Construction Equipment (HCE), as two independent construction equipment companies under HHIH. HG will act as the intermediary company of HHIH Group’s construction equipment businesses and will be leading both DI and HCE to maximize the company’s efforts and focus on the construction equipment industry. Together the two brands will combine as a global top 5 player. It was first announced in 2020 that Doosan Group was looking to sell its shares of the company to help improve its finances and repay debts held by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and that Hyundai was a top contender early on. In December 2020, it was announced that Hyundai was the preferred bidder. Hyundai signed a deal in February 2021 to acquire a 35%

stake in Doosan Infracore; its subsidiary Hyundai Genuine Co. took over that stake in April. Per The Korea Herald, regulators’ approval of the deal will also aid Doosan Heavy with its corporate restructuring. The deal will also help Hyundai Genuine to increase its market presence in Korea as well as the global construction market. The combination of Hyundai Construction Equipment and Doosan Infracore will reportedly create a new construction equipment powerhouse. The two entities currently stand at No. 20 and No. 9 in the global construction equipment market, according to a Pulse News report. The joining of the two companies is set to create the world’s fifth-largest construction equipment player, and No. 1 in South Korea. In addition, the acquisition will further expand Hyundai Construction’s global presence. Doosan Infracore’s excavator operations will also help to enhance Hyundai’s excavator engine business. If you are struggling to find new work vehicles, you are not alone. There is currently limited availability coupled with elevated prices. As the supply chain continues to recover, we may have already seen the worst of the shortage. “Availability has made a slight improvement,” says Pannemann. But don’t expect major improvements for a while. “As far as when we will see availability improve, it will take at least a year.” If you will be needing to add trucks to your fleet, procrastination is not a viable strategy. You will need to be proactive and order well in advance. In certain situations, you may need to get creative about alternative ways to source your work truck fleet until some form of normalcy returns. FELLING TRAILERS’ 2021 TRAILER FOR A CAUSE BENEFITS FIREFIGHTERS Felling Trailers conducted its ninth annual online auction of an FT-3 drop deck utility trailer to benefit a non-profit organization, which for 2021, was the Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation. Felling Trailers wanted to help generate awareness about the hidden health dangers and cancer risks firefighters face while serving and beyond. So, Felling manufactured and painted one of its most popular trailers the signature fire engine red with custom fire engine gold pinstriping, bearing the Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation emblem. The online auction of the trailer ran for seven days, from Sep. 5 through Sep. 11. Several Felling Trailers’ suppliers have joined to support MNFFF by sponsoring the trailer build. MNFFF’s mission is to provide funding and resources for fire departments to obtain the best available equipment, technology, and training. They are dedicated to maintaining the highest level of public safety in their communities. The State of Minnesota has 774 fire departments. MNFFF’s Hoods 4 Heroes campaign goal is to provide 500 particulate hoods to those departments who cannot afford this type of PPE or have applied for grants and been denied. INDUSTRY UPDATE OSHA CALLS ON INDUSTRY TO COMBAT UNIQUE KILLER OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS Hazards often associated with workplace deaths in the U.S. construction industry—including falling, being struck-by or crushed by equipment or other objects, or suffering electrocution—are well known. But a recent study finds that another potential killer is taking lives in the industry at an alarming rate. In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that men working in construction have one of the highest suicide rates compared to other industries. Their rate of suicide is about four times higher than the general population. While the CDC continues its research to understand the disparity, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has formed a task force of industry partners, unions, and educators to raise awareness of the types of stress that can push construction workers into depression and
toward suicide. In addition to alerting stakeholders, the task force encourages industry employers to share and discuss available resources with their workers. The task force called on the industry to take part in a weeklong Suicide
Prevention Safety Stand-Down, September 6-10, to raise awareness about the unique challenges construction workers face. The stand-down coincided with National Suicide Prevention Month in September. “Work-related stress can have severe impacts on mental health and

without proper support may lead to substance abuse and even suicide,” stated Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Jim Frederick. “Workers in construction face many work-related stressors that may increase their risk factors for suicide, such as the uncertainty of seasonal work, demanding schedules and workplace injuries that are sometimes treated with opioids.” “Like many workplace fatalities, suicides can be prevented,” said OSHA Acting Regional Administrator Billie Kizer in Kansas City, Missouri. “We encourage employers to use all available resources, familiarize themselves with the problem and learn to recognize the warning signs of depression. We also urge workers to seek help if they feel overwhelmed or overcome by a loss of hope.” To read the full article and view additional resources, visit forconstructionpros.com/21627381.

HY-BRID LIFTS SEES INCREASED DEMAND, 68 PERCENT SALES GROWTH Hy-Brid Lifts has released record sales in the first half of 2021, with projections for the second half of the year on track to continue in a positive trend. Global sales rose 68 percent compared to the previous year, spurred by a 110-percent growth in Push-Around Series sales. The Pro Series category reported a growth of 41 percent, driven by the company’s lightweight entry into the 19-foot scissor lift market with the PS-1930. Demand for the ZT-1630 boosted Zero-Turn Series sales by nearly 200 percent. “We have seen a tremendous increase in demand for our products globally as our customers and end users see the value of our innovative product portfolio,” said Marshall Shaver, vice president of sales and marketing, who attributes the company’s six-month sales to being uniquely positioned in the access market. “Our ability to navigate through challenging supply chain issues, steel cost increases, and labor shortages allows us to continue to provide equipment with little disruption.” To read more, visit forconstructionpros.com/21602918.

A DIFFERENT Kind of SHOW
T
Attitudes, expectations, and other forecasts and opinions for this year’s ARA Show.
his year’s Rental Show will be nothing if not ‘different.’ A different time of year and a different venue to start, but with different challenges than we’ve seen in a long time on top of it. The current labor shortage may shape this show more than anything else. Some rental businesses may decide to steer away from more laborintensive types of equipment in favor of portions of their businesses that may take less valuable time. Some buyers will be on the hunt for technology that might also assist with the challenges brought on by the labor shortage. I feel it’s a great year to look for efficiencies, improvements, and training with a consultant both to make the most of your employees’ time and to help keep valuable personnel from jumping ship. As they walk the exhibit floor, wise

buyers will have the trillion-plus dollars spent on government infrastructure initiatives firmly in mind. There are so many unanswered questions! Here are just a few: How quickly will the funds be spent on infrastructure? How backlogged are the shipping ports, and how will that affect equipment and parts availability? How will the supply of new rental equipment be drained by a possible deluge of purchasing? A much larger than usual worry this year will be those supply chain challenges. Since shipping times will continue to be longer than normal (for some products, at least through February 2022), many rental business owners, operators, and key managers
will be forecasting their equipment needs further in advance. Also, of course, top of mind for many will be the risk of COVID-19 and its variants. Some registered attendees for upcoming in-person shows are taking a wait-and-see approach in deciding if they will attend because of the risks. Some who are planning on attending have told me that they are more likely to be in the exhibit halls than in seminar rooms. Personally, I am fully vaccinated and feel very comfortable being there. So, I will be manning my booth as I have for decades as an exhibitor. And I am really looking forward to being there again this year! As usual, I plan to reconnect with my many friends in the rental business as well as meet new rental business owners and operators. Yes, it is a time for reminiscing as well as a time for making plans for the future. For all that’s different, the show will still be a great opportunity to connect with others in the industry and catch up with old friends. There are very few who haven’t been impacted in the last year and a half, and I expect that there will be quite a few stories to tell. Of course, there are aspects of the upcoming Rental Show that may be beyond the control of the show planners. However, the expectation is that the show team, the convention center staff, and all who share the responsibility for the security of this convention will make sure that we are safe. In so many ways, these are unprecedented times. But just as certainly, rental business folks want to (and need to) hang out with their colleagues. Plus, they have a desire to see what’s new on the exhibit floor as well as to work with the exhibitors. So, in conclusion, I predict that the upcoming ARA Rental Show will be very successful indeed.
