EDITOR’S COMMENT Prices correcting, but maybe not entirely The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating. But for those exposed to forest industries, there has been something of a silver lining in the form of lumber prices. Removing the collapse in pricing at the onset of the pandemic in March, prices were up some 270% from pre-pandemic levels to early May at an astronomical $1,690 per 1,000bdft. The key drivers of the price surge relate to wood’s primary use in house building. First, COVID pulled the rug out from under all travel plans, leaving those fortunate enough to retain job security with excesses of both cash and time that were converted into home maintenance and improvement projects around the first world. Second, the economic devastation has been immediate and catastrophic at a scale that has eclipsed even major depressive events of the past century. Low interest rates that had not really recovered from the most recent crisis in 2008 went lower still, with several large economies contemplating moving into negative territory. This was reflected in mortgage rates, which prompted many planning to build a new home in a few years to lock in once-in-ageneration low interest payments. Meanwhile, supply has been hit in many places because of COVID. Where primary production hasn’t been affected, international transportation has been at least partly disrupted. When supply chains have been functioning, capacity has remained constrained – it takes about two years to build a contemporary sawmill. The pullback in pricing experienced over the past month – lumber was down more than a third – has been seen by many as inevitable and likely to continue until we are resting back at pre-pandemic levels, as vaccinated first-world citizens start to travel again and inflationary pressures start to rear their heads. However, while these factors will play a part, they have little to do with the current correction. As an old saying goes: the best cure for high prices is high prices. That is, price levels
4 International Forest Industries | JUNE / JULY 2021
have finally reached a point where they have put people off their home improvements. Admittedly, this has coupled with the ability to travel – even if it’s just domestically – to shelve DIY projects. But people will return from summer holidays and pick up projects with lumber costs now at more affordable levels, though still up more than 100% on February last year. And despite inflation being a more realistic part of central banking conversations recently, rates remain low and will do for as long as policy makers can afford to protect the recovery. If anything, those seeking mortgages may discover an increased sense of urgency as the prospect of higher rates features more regularly in nightly news bulletins. Yes, DIY patterns will soon return to normal and interest rates will rise – assuming mindbendingly expensive stimulus packages work (and they already are) – but most expect these increases to arrive in 2022. Moreover, those increases will be accompanied by a rise in industrial building projects and a mandate to ‘build back green’ across the globe. Wood, as a renewable building material increasingly proving its suitability for taller commercial structures, is in pole position to benefit. One could then argue rising interest rates will come hand-in-glove with rising commercial demand to levels unknown. No one has a crystal ball and it is fair to say uncertainty has become a certainty. But there are enough possibilities on the demand side of the equation to suggest elevated prices, compared at least to pre-pandemic levels, are here to stay in the near-term and potentially much, much longer. steel in timber bunks, since the previous lines also counted on the innovative material. This vast market experience has provided a steady improvement in products and the company currently produces the lightest models in the market.
Reduced production cost In addition to the increased safety, the use of high-strength steel in timber bunks results in a lower production cost. With lighter bunks, the trailer will suffer less weight impact, which will result in savings with fuel, tires and brakes. The weight reduction can still be used to carry more timber, which increases the efficiency of the operation. By reducing wear and tear on items, the life of the transport equipment will also increase.
Good for the environment
High-strength steel creates more safety & competitiveness for the forestry segment Choosing the best materials available in the market is a suitable indication for any segment, but in some areas this choice is more than important:
I
t’s essential. In the forestry sector, for example, thanks to a severe and heavy routine, the quality of the products used is what guarantees the protection of the professionals involved and the efficiency of operations. Considered up to four times safer than conventional ones, high-strength steel (HSS) is a must for companies specializing in wood transport that wish to be more competitive. This material has a more careful and complex manufacturing, which generates a more elaborate and reliable
product. One of the main differentials in the use of high-strength steel is the reduction of product weight. It can be lighter than conventional steels while being sturdier, and it is twice as strong as aluminum. The timber bunks made of this material therefore have a higher load capacity and are safer. The new generation of the RAPTOR® line is manufactured entirely from HSS. The models are produced at Unylaser, Brazil. The brand is a pioneer in the South America in the use of high strength
Another important benefit of high strength steel is within the environmental area. Lighter products require less energy to manufacture, generate less carbon dioxide emissions and reduce water contamination. Also, the use of HSS reduces the thickness of the materials applied, requiring less weld beads. For these reasons, the new generation of RAPTOR® is also called “green timber bunks”, since it was designed considering environmental guidelines. HSS is still an ally of the severe conditions encountered in the industry segment. With the help of this material, the new RAPTOR® models respond more effectively to adverse situations and are more suitable for yard, road, river or sea transport.

Scott Dane becomes next Executive Director for the American Loggers Council On June 1, 2021, Scott Dane officially became the next Executive Director for the American Loggers Council (ALC), replacing the retiring Danny Dructor who has been with the ALC since July of 2001. Dane brings with him a vast amount of experience working with timber harvesting and timber hauling associations having been the Executive Director for the Associated Contract Loggers and Truckers of Minnesota for the past seventeen years. He has experience in State and National issues impacting the timber harvesting and timber hauling issues at both the State and National level. He has been a critical component of the ALC’s work to gain financial assistance for those businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also been involved in legislation allowing State legal weight tolerances on the Federal Interstate Highway System and other ALC
initiatives like the Future Careers in Logging Act. Participating in activities and legislation related to the federal timber sale program and forest restoration projects will also keep Dane busy as he continues to represent the issues and concerns of those ALC members who are dependent on a viable federal timber supply and a federal forest restoration program. Tim Christopherson, President of the ALC states, “After close to 18 months of searching for a new Executive Director for the ALC, the search committee was able to narrow down the field to one candidate. I am pleased that Scott has accepted the position and look forward to working with him during the transition. He has the drive, passion and ambition to take the ALC to the next level.” Scott Dane commented, “Danny has provided the leadership to develop the American Loggers
Council into the leading national voice of the American logging industry. I look forward to continuing to build upon that foundation, expanding the partnerships, supporting the state members with their issues and promoting the agenda of the American Loggers Council.” The ALC office is relocating from Texas to Minnesota where Scott Dane will set up the office beginning June 1, 2021. The American Loggers Council is the only national organization solely dedicated to representing the independent contract logger on the national level. They have the
combined forces of independent contractors and state and regional logging associations, as well as their many sponsors around the country to impact industry positively and pro-actively by sharing the benefits of education and training opportunities, networking, research, promotion and legislative coordination www.amloggers.com/news

HASSLACHER Group first in Austria to invest in Valutec’s TC continuous kiln HASSLACHER Group, one of the world’s leading producers of glulam and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), invests in TC continuous kilns from Valutec. The deal means the well-known timber industry group becomes the first in Austria to own the groundbreaking lumber kiln. This is also a new prestigious order for Valutec, which strengthens its position as a global leader within the field of continuous kilns. “We want to increase the drying capacity at our sawmills in Preding and Sachsenburg and saw that TC kilns were right for us. They offer a combination of high capacity and flexibility, without compromising on quality,” says Michael Fercher, CTO at HASSLACHER Group, which has seven sawmills in three countries. The investment in TC continuous kilns is the third order where Valutec has earned the confidence of family owned and lead HASSLACHER Group.
“We are extremely happy and proud that HASSLACHER NORICA TIMBER will be first in Austria, also when it comes to TC kilns. Both because they prioritize quality, just like us, and because they have such a fantastic reputation in the sawmill industry.” Five years ago HASSLACHER Group became the first company in Austria to use Valutec’s OTC continuous kiln technology, when they invested in two OTC continuous kilns for their sawmill in Sachsenburg. The following year, yet another order for the same type of continuous kiln for their sawmill followed. “We are attracted by Valutec’s continuous kiln technology. It is superior from a capacity perspective. Adding to that, it delivers high quality and requires less material handling than traditional batch kilns, at the same time as its continuous operation is gentler on the boiler,” explains Fercher.
Clear trend With its investment in the TC kilns, HASSLACHER Group follows a clear trend in the sawmill industry. During the past year, the new generation of TC kilns from Valutec have been sold to sawmills around the world and the company has reached new markets. “Behind the technological advance lies thousands of product development hours, where we studied, evaluated, tested and invented new things in all parts of a type of kiln that was used, in its first form, back in 1927,” says Larsson. The TC continuous kilns for delivery to HASSLACHER Group have eight drying zones and will solely be used to dry siding boards. The maximum annual capacity is approximately 75,000 cubic meters (31,783 MBF) per kiln. The kilns are built from stainless steel and are equipped with pressure frames for minimal deformation of the uppermost layer of lumber,

heat recovery system and the Valmatics 4.0 control system. Together with the investment, two batch kilns in Preding are being upgraded with Valmatics 4.0. This is the only control system for lumber drying combining simulator technology with adaptive control, and allows for simultaneous optimization of capacity, quality and energy consumption. The new kilns and the control system upgrades are planned to begin in the fall.
Resolute Forest Products invests $50 million in its sawmills Each of the projects will serve to generate additional value from Resolute’s wood products segment across market cycles. Resolute Forest Products Inc. has announced additional capital investments of $50 million in its wood products operations to support its continued growth, and it confirmed the repayment of all amounts outstanding under its revolving and term credit facilities, reducing debt by $180 million in the 2Q. “The cash generated with our lumber platform in these strong lumber markets provides the opportunity to share benefits directly with shareholders,” said Remi G. Lalonde, president and CEO. “We’re also enhancing long-term value by improving our company fundamentals with investments in high-return and
quick payback lumber projects in three key regions for Resolute: the Abitibi in Quebec, Northwestern Ontario and the Southeast U.S. What’s more, we’ve removed a material amount of debt from the balance sheet with the further $180 million repayment in 2Q, leaving as our only remaining debt the $300 million of unsecured 4.875% senior notes due 2026, and our liquidity stands at around $850 million.
The additional $50 million in wood products investments include: • $ 22 million to modernize equipment at the Senneterre (Quebec) sawmill, which will enhance overall efficiency and productivity of the Abitibi regional operations; • $ 13 million at the Thunder Bay / Fort William First Nation

(Ontario) sawmill to increase capacity by up to 40 million board feet with new equipment and modifications to the fiber flow; and • $ 15 million at the Glenwood (Arkansas) and Cross City (Florida) sawmills to support fiber optimization and overall efficiency. The Cross City investment will also increase capacity by up to 20 million board feet. Each of these projects will serve to generate additional value from Resolute’s wood products segment across market cycles. The improvements at the U.S. sawmills build on the previously announced investments associated with the restart of the El Dorado (Arkansas) sawmill. UK’s most advanced Sawmill Planing Line begins production North Lincolnshire-based timber importer and timber products manufacturer Arbor Forest Products has begun production on its new sawmill planing line – thought to be the most advanced system of its kind in the UK. Last year the company announced it was investing £6 million in the new facility which features unique timber scanning technology, allowing Arbor Forest Products to eliminate defects in lengths of timber – reducing waste and saving time for Arbor Forest customers. The planing line was developed in conjunction with Swedish company System Hall AB, which designs, manufactures and supplies many different types of mechanical handling systems and conveyors for the woodworking industry, primarily – up to now – in its neighbouring Nordic countries. Arbor Forest Products collaborated closely with System Hall to devise the production line that best suited its needs, and which would offer the best possible value to end users – which would include shed manufacturers, those
building farm and equine facilities, and the general construction market. Phil Yell, operations director at Arbor Forest Products, and Phil Bott, sawmill production director, worked closely with System Hall’s Jaokim Blixt to agree the design and layout of the facility, travelling to Scandinavia in late 2019 to see how similar sawmills, where facilities operate with faster line speeds and higher levels of automation than has hitherto been available in the UK. With the line now fully operational, it is now processing up to 200m of timber per minute. The technologically led process involves each piece of timber being scanned as it runs through the line, allowing defects such as splits and knots to be identified and trimmed out, with the result being more useable lengths of timber in each load that arrives with customers. Commenting on the new line, Phil Yell said: “This new facility represents a significant investment for us at Arbor Forest Products, and a large leap forward in terms of the standards being achieved in
the UK timber market. Technology like this has so far only existed overseas, and we’re very proud to have worked with System Hall to bring this level of processing power to the UK for the first time. “We are now able to accurately assess each piece of timber that passes through our facility and can therefore guarantee a specified level of quality for each batch, in line with our customers’ expectations. With some industrial users reporting wastage levels of around 10 per cent due to faults with the timber, this is a genuine game-changer for UK timber.” This is the first phase in the company’s biggest investment in a single year, with upcoming plans for additional storage taking the total investment to around £12 million.

Hekotek to supply equipment for Atlant sawmill AS Hekotek has signed a contract for the supply of equipment to the sawmill of Atlant LLC located in Jantal village, Irkutsk region of Russia. Hekotek is to supply a set of own-manufactured equipment for this new sawmill complex, including lines for log sorting, log in-feed, sawn timber sorting, as well as conveyor system for collecting and removal of sawdust. The sawline itself is to be supplied by USNR.
With respect to the legislative rule in Russia prohibiting round logs export starting from beginning of 2022, the construction of the new sawmill facilities is an important step, – comments Dmitry Gidenko, Atlant LLC project manager. – It ensures maintaining jobs in the region’s forest sector, as well as local processing of Siberia’s high-quality logs. The first rail-cars with the equipment are to be shipped to Siberia already this summer, while
the start-up of the whole sawmill complex and reaching of the project capacity are planned for the summer 2022. Looking back, it’s worth mentioning Hekotek first supply of sawmill equipment implemented to the village of Jantal for the local company JantalLes in 2002. After some years of successful operation, this sawmill got through the period of several owner changes, and its production volumes remained low. The current
owner, Atlant LLC, acquired the sawmill several years ago and has by now made a significant step forward to develop the sawmill, including strong well-timed investments in expanding its production facilities.

Good cooperation: Steve Williams (EWD UK), Shane O’Callaghan, EWD Managing Director Herbert Oppenborn, Gerard O’Callaghan, Niall Grainger (from left)
At GP Wood in Lissarda, the logs are transferred online on three decks to the new EWD sawmill
Rebuilt in record time After a fire at the Lissarda/IE site in 2018, GP Wood immediately decided to rebuild the sawmill. The choice of supplier was made quickly: For those in charge, there was no other option than EWD, due to their previous good cooperation on the profiling line project in Enniskeane
I
n 2014, the Irish company GP Wood launched an extensive investment programme for its two sawmill sites in Enniskeane and Lissarda. One of the first steps was the replacement of the saw line in Enniskeane with EWD, Altötting/ DE. The five-year plan included investments in Lissarda at a later date – but everything turned out differently. On Friday the 13th of July 2018, a fire broke out at Lissarda. The sawing line and parts of the sorting system were completely destroyed. “But it was immediately clear to us that we
were going to rebuild,” says Niall Grainger, one of the managing directors of GP Wood.
Focus on flexibility The investment package in Lissarda had to be put on the front burner immediately. Due to their very good cooperation in Enniskeane, the choice of supplier once again fell on EWD. “EWD listened to our wishes and designed a very flexible and robust saw line for us. The competence – even in our first 20 International Forest Industries | JUNE / JULY 2021
project – as well as the technology won us over,” Grainger explains. “Thomas Lang from EWD spared no effort. The entire installation was planned and designed by EWD in 3D, which contributed significantly to the rapid assembly.” With regard to the technology, Grainger and GP Wood project manager Shane O’Callaghan had
not decided – in the end, they opted for a reducer band saw line with three Quadro band saws and two Optidrive Edger optimizer installations. “We looked at many sawmills throughout Europe, and time and again the band saw stood out. With this equipment, we can respond very flexibly to customer wishes,” clarifies the GP Wood managing director. About half of the production concerns construction timber for building, the other 50 % is divided between garden timber and packaging timber.” Grainger puts the cutting volume in Lissarda at 300,000 fm/y in an extended shift. This
makes the site slightly larger than Enniskeane. However, “larger” is not to be taken literally with regard to the area – there are only 3.5 ha available in Lissarda. “Making the best possible use of this space was a big challenge - especially since the new hall was
not allowed to be bigger than the previous one,” says EWD project manager, Rolf Rigoni. The new concept was already in place in Lissarda at the end of 2018, and production has been up and running again in January 2020. “As in Enniskeane, the schedule was very ambitious this time but we were once again able to implement it as planned,” says Grainger.
Online sawmill GP Wood does not operate a classic log yard in Lissarda, but feeds the logs – in comparison to Central European sawmills – virtually unsorted at the sawing line. “It’s not as efficient, but it saves us space and costs,” Grainger reasons. One works on the principle of “scan and set”, similar to the American sawmill principle. The logs are fed in

sorted by length and then roughly pre-sorted on three decks based on diameter ranges. The band saw line is designed for log lengths of 3 to 5.4 m, with diameters ranging from 14 cm (small end) to 65 cm (large end). In the first step, a 3D scanner determines the log dimension. The cutting pattern is determined on the basis of the scan. In the primary breakdown, the ZE2 infeed unit turns the log into the correct position. This is followed by the PF19 chipper for guiding faces on the left and right. The first quadro band saw of the type EBT4-1800 cuts up to four side boards. After the 90° rotation of the 2-sided cant, it again goes through a 3D scanner, a ZE2 centring unit, a PF19 chipper and the second EBT4-1800 quadro band saw, which also cuts off up to four side boards. The resulting squared lumber can be cut in line directly with
transport. After a scanning and optimisation section of 12 m, the actual edging process takes place with a TAE machine. The special feature of this TAE is the skewing and slewing of the saws of up to 25 mm/m at all cutting heights. This ensures a better quality of the side products and at the same time a higher yield. The board edgers are designed for board widths from 90-550 mm and thicknesses from 16-55 mm. The band saw line and the Optidrive edger optimizer installation are operated from one cabin. Once all the fine-tuning work has been completed, only one employee is to be responsible for both high-performance board edgers, as one installation is to run in automatic mode. Grainger is very satisfied with how things have gone: “Despite the circumstances - the final steps of
the third quadro band saw of the same type into up to five finished main products. Larger diameters or squared lumber with more than five products are returned to the first band saw via a merry-go-round system and pass through the line again. “This means that up to three times five main products are then possible,” explains the EWD project manager. The feed rate of the reducing band saw line is up to 120 m/min, depending on the diameter.
High edging performance The side boards are fed to two high-performance EWD Optidrive edger optimizer installations. They are designed for feed rates of 180420 m/min. “At the moment we are running at around 270 m/min,” O’Callaghan elaborates. With the Optidrive installations, the board is first scanned during lengthwise

Worldwide continuous success for Valutec TC-Kilns As the leading developer and world leader in continuous kilns Valutec has delivered more than 1,500 continuous kilns to sawmills around the world
S
ome 18 months ago, the company commissioned North America’s first TC continuous kiln at Pleasant River’s site Moose River in Jackman, Maine and in April 2020 the second TC kiln was commissioned at Pleasant River’s site in Dover, also Maine. “It does a great job, in a lot less time than we’re used to and puts out a much better product”, says Fred Haigis, Lumber Yard Supervisor Moose River.
The TC Kiln Valutec is the only company offering TC kilns. A kiln type that comes with distinguishing features such as low energy consumption, high flexibility and superior capacity. It gives the operator the possibility to create the ultimate drying process with unlimited freedom to mix dimensions, minimal moisture content variation and reduced risk of checking.
Annual capacity can reach 125 MMBF with target moisture contents down to around 12-18%. The principle is based on the timber package being fed lengthwise through zones in which the air circulates laterally across the drying channel. This enables the separate regulation of the climate in different zones according to a schedule that comes very close to the ideal schedule of a batch kiln. The TC kilns are equipped with Valutec’s control system Valmatics 4.0, which has an integrated simulator that enables simultaneous optimization of capacity, quality, and energy consumption. “The leap in technology has fundamentally changed the way of working at many sawmills. Higher flexibility creates significant advantages, particularly when it comes to planning. Competition is extremely tough in the sawmill business, where margins are tight. So, customers in this sector rely on high efficiency and quality,” says Ingo Wallocha, Managing Director, Valutec Wood Dryers. The TC-kiln has quickly become

The startup of Pleasant River’s TC kilns did not go unnoticed and before the Corona outbreak several sawmills visited Pleasant River to take a closer look at Valutec’s TCkilns. The response from the visits were overwhelming and today TC kilns are being installed at JD Irving, Grand Lake Timber, Canada and Hampton Lumber Company, Warrenton, US for commissioning in the fall 2021. “I can honestly say that whoever sees the Valutec TC-kiln at Moose River probably won’t buy another kiln again. Whenever I talk to the guys as Mooser River or Dover I’m really proud to hear that they’ve the best experience with our kilns”, says Wallocha.
Record Deal to Russia Valutec was also chosen to deliver eight TC-kilns to Russia’s ULK Group. The company is investing more than €400 million in one of the country’s biggest sawmill investments in modern times. The ambition is to have one of the world’s largest and most modern sawmills, with an annual capacity of more than 425,000 MBF sawn timber, when completed in 2023. “That ULK chose Valutec for this state-of-the-art project proves that our solutions are a good match for sawmills all over the world,” says Robert Larsson, CEO of Valutec Group “Our mission is to facilitate an increased use of wood products in every customer market. We are honored to help ULK optimize their drying process, which we know makes a big difference on every sawmill’s bottom line.” Leading up to the decision, ULK carried out a comprehensive comparison of major kiln suppliers and visited many reference installations. “Our ambition is to build the world’s most modern sawmill, and to do so we must exclusively use suppliers who are technology leaders,” says Artem Samuhin, Deputy General Director for Development of ULK Group. Valutec was the kiln supplier offering the most modern, efficient solution. In

New Control System In late 2019, Valutec released the control system Valmatics 4.0. The It allows sawmills around the world to automate and optimize drying in all types of lumber kilns. High process quality is guaranteed by simulators programmed with data from hundreds of thousands of measurements that enable the calculation of drying processes with unbeatable accuracy from beginning to end. “We knew that the market had a demand for an automated control system but the response has been better that we could imagine. In 18 months, we’ve already sold over 500 Valmatics 4.0 systems”, says Wallocha. Valmatics 4.0 is the only control system on the market that combines simulator technology with adaptive control, and enables optimization based on capacity, quality and energy consumption. Simultaneous. The new Valmatics 4.0 means modern TC continuous kiln functions can be put to full use. All the kiln operator needs to know is the incoming and desired outcoming moisture content – the system does the rest. This frees up time for more important operations such as saw planning, quality control and sampling

Westmill - unbeatable service since 1975
Founded in 1975, Westmill has consistently maintained its focus and values on satisfying the requirements of its veneer-drying customers
S
tarting with the reliable supply of spare parts and adding in its better-thannew dryer rebuild capabilities and knowledge, Westmill was quickly called upon by its customers to design and supply new veneer drying equipment. Success for the small company competing against multi-national giants was dependent on not only technical excellence but something else that the firm considers a competitive advantage over larger groups: a willingness to tailor solutions to meet customer needs and budget, and a track record of support. “Simply put, Westmill – top to bottom – has as part of its DNA a “We’ve got your back’ attitude for its customers,” the company’s management stated. Success provided opportunities and growth continued. Westmill continues to invest heavily in research and development to create innovative designs and industry firsts. Over the past few years, Westmill has been actively engaged in a number of product development initiatives, leading to some best-in-class technologies that are being embraced by its “most performance-minded customers”.
energy, improving veneer quality, and reducing the risk of dryer fires. This system is operating successfully in over a dozen veneer dryers in North America, with more under contract. • 2 -PEx Exhaust and Dryer Humidity Control System (patents pending): A proprietary 2-PEx Exhaust and Dryer Humidity Control System provides unparalleled control of the humidity ratio along the entire dryer’s length resulting in increased production, energy savings and greatly improved veneer quality. Combining with the WestVac system delivers exceptional dryer performance and control.
The following list includes key innovations:
• Q uick-Change Dryer Roll Baffle System (patented): Westmill designed the first-ever, quickly interchangeable Dryer Roll Baffle system. The most significant benefit of this innovation is that the roll-baffle can be removed and replaced in under five minutes, with an entire dryer end-wall replacement in under an hour – as compared to 16-24 man-hours for existing rollbaffle configurations. The patent design means personnel do not need to remove the dryer rolls, chain, sprockets, star gears or even jet tubes to install new roll baffles.
• W estVac Emission and Dryer Control System (patented): an effective method of controlling end-wall dryer emissions while increasing production, saving
• F an Shaft Seal System: A Proprietary Spring Tensioned Packing Gland has been developed to permanently and effectively solve the common

problem of emissions leaking through panel packing glands at the fan shaft. This area has long been recognized as a major maintenance concern due to the difficultly accessing the packing gland below the lower shaft bearing and heat slinger. We effectively solved this problem by creating a proprietary Spring Tensioned Packing Gland at this location. This solution has also greatly reduced the number of bottom bearing failures caused by high heat and bearing contamination. The solution has been successfully operating in over 260 dryer fans in North America. • “ Safe Motion” Door Handle Load-Dampener (patents pending): To eliminate any potential risk of ‘strike-hazard’ for an unsuspecting dryer tender when opening a dryer door, Westmill has incorporated a new load-dampening-cell into our Patented Articulating dryer door hardware to provide complete control of the door handle throughout the opening and closing process. • Bearing Vibration Monitoring: A recent contract will incorporate real-time monitoring of Fan Bearing Vibration on two new Westmill 6-Deck Jet dryers for progressive customers. This real-time monitoring directs maintenance personnel to out of tolerance areas before they become failures. • Patented Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) System: A proven and effective method of eliminating dryer corrosion. It has been used extensively for over 30 years to protect national structures, pipelines, ships hulls, oil rigs, underground pipeline, and storage tanks together with many more structures to protect from corrosion. • Successfully installed the first ever such ICCP system in a Veneer Dryer: Two years post-installation in a corrosion prone environment, the ICCP system is proving to have effectively eliminated the chemical reactions that result in a corroded, weakened dryer, with less than 1/10th of a gram of steel loss over that period.

Norra Timber monitors band saws & reducers with online systems from SPM
S Following a successful test installation, Norra Timber has chosen to move forward with a condition monitoring solution from SPM Instrument for its new high-tech band saw line at the Sävar Sawmill near Umeå in northern Sweden, aiming to ensure high machine availability & long pre-warning times
ävar Sawmill is a high-tech band saw line specializing in processing spruce and pine, a raw material from Norra Skog’s catchment area, which extends over half of northern Sweden. This modern plant has a high saw yield and is equipped with X-ray technology – the world’s first CT Log (*) – directly in the saw line, enabling the optimization of each log and production of high-quality goods. The annual production amounts to 320,000 cubic meters of sawn goods. To ensure high machine availability and secure delivery, the sawmill has chosen to install SPM Instruments’ latest and most hightech online system, Intellinova Parallel EN, after a successful pilot test. The system provides exceptionally long pre-warning times for deteriorating mechanical condition and lubrication condition, with extremely clear measurement results that make it possible to detect early damage such as subsurface cracks in bearings.
Three Intellinova Parallel EN units, one thirty-two channel version and two with sixteen channels, and fifty-one DuoTech accelerometers cover the entire band saw line. DuoTech combines vibration and shock pulse measurement in the same sensor, using the patented HD measurement technologies HD ENV and SPM HD. Measurement data is stored and analyzed in the Condmaster Ruby 2020 software, with the possibility of integration into the plant’s control system or desired IoT platform through Rest API or OPC UA. Using the SPM ServiceNet portal, SPM Instrument also performs condition monitoring of Sävar Sawmill, where machine condition is monitored via remote analysis by SPM’s service engineers. The sawmill staff can easily follow the work through the web application Condmaster. NET via smartphones, tablets, and computers for an immediate overview of the mechanical condition of critical assets in the facility. Joakim Jonasson, Maintenance Manager Mechanics at Norra Timber, commented on the investment: “The purpose of our investment has always been to avoid corrective maintenance as much as possible, to allow ourselves to plan the right maintenance effort at the right time, and thus work proactively and preventively. Unplanned stops in the major drives in the process can take anything from one to several shifts to rectify, which results in major production loss, which is difficult to catch up on since more or less everything we produce are sold products. The investment has already started to pay off as we have avoided replacing a large plant part in conjunction with a major breakdown. This was possible because extra control measurements could be performed via the measurement system. These measurements showed good values, giving us a decision basis to avoid unnecessary replacement of process parts. Another significant advantage, or security, that the system provides is increased safety in the form of reduced risk of fire in the event of bearing failure, which is otherwise something that we in the industry have great respect for.” Norra Timber’s task is to run the industrial operation, and market and sell the wood products manufactured at the three sawmills in Kåge, Sävar, and Hissmofors and the units for added value products. Norra Timber’s owner is Norra Skog, an association of 27,000 individual forest owners with a total holding of roughly 5.2 million acres of forest land. Refining forests throughout northern Sweden, Norra Skog had a turnover of approximately SEK 4.7 billion in 2020. (*) Computed tomography, also known as CAT scan.

The PONSSE K121 loader has been designed to withstand the toughest working conditions. The loader has been field tested in demanding conditions in Canada, Russia and the United States where it has been put to work for thousands of hours. The field test results have been good. The loader is very powerful and easy to control and also reliable thanks to its sturdy structure. The new loader combines high slewing torque and lifting power, increased reach, and a new type of loader geometry that is easy to control. The hydraulic hoses and pipes have been placed inside the boom for added protection. The extension cylinders are also protected inside the boom and the rotator piping has been protected by passing the pipes directly through the hanger. In addition, hydraulic end damping has been added to the lifting cylinder to make the operator’s work easier when operating at the extreme limits of the cylinder movement. The new structural innovations ensure a maximum utilisation rate and ease of maintenance.
A REDESIGNED STRUCTURE

36 International Forest Industries | JUNE / JULY 2021
For a long time, basic loader features have been based on similar solutions. For the PONSSE K121 loader, the traditional structure has been upgraded significantly and the structure of the booms and cylinders has been redesigned. The structure and positioning of the cylinders are different from
previous solutions. Therefore, it was possible to reduce the number of welded joints and increase the use of castings. These aspects together reduce the tension and strain on the components and extend the life of the loader. The new structural solutions have undergone extensive field testing as well as fatigue testing at Ponsse’s factory. The hydraulic system has also been redesigned. Thanks to the new structure of the loader, it is no longer necessary to have the hydraulic pipes and hoses on the outside of the boom, instead they have been placed inside the structure for added protection. At the grapple end, the piping passes through the hanger to the rotator. For this reason, the hydraulic parts are better protected from external damage. When designing the loader, the impact of work lighting on an operator’s well-being was examined thoroughly. The positioning of work lights has been done in a new way and the loader can be equipped with efficient and well-protected LED lights. This solution significantly reduces reflections caused by the log gate and directs the light to the areas where it is needed, in other words the load space, grapple and working area. Efficient and correctly directed lighting reduces strain on the operator’s eyes and helps them cope better with working in the dark. The K121 loader can even be equipped with a 0.50/0,52 m2 grapple.
PONSSE BISON ACTIVE FRAME The main strengths of the new forwarder model are its speed and efficiency. The continuously variable transmission and the Active Frame cabin suspension system raise productivity to a new level, especially over long transport distances. The PONSSE Bison Active Frame demonstrates its speed especially over long transport distances. The new continuously variable transmission (CVT) always balances the driving speed and engine load, ensuring low fuel consumption and high productivity. In addition to fuel efficiency, the benefits of the powertrain include high tractive force and seamless transmission – work doesn’t have to stop when changing the driving speed. The PONSSE Bison is equipped with the PONSSE Active Frame cabin suspension system. The system has a simple and functional structure, dampening any lateral movement affecting the operator effectively and unnoticeably. The Active Frame allows the operator to stay alert and productive hour after hour, even at high speeds. The large load space combined with the powerful and easy-to-use loader ensure
efficient load handling at all work sites.
CVT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREST MACHINES The transmission of the PONSSE Bison Active Frame is based on CVT technology. Product Manager Juha Haverinen, who is responsible for forwarders at Ponsse, tells that the experiences have been good. “Thanks to the CVT, driving speed can be increased considerably if the situation permits. This is especially useful over long transport distances.” The CVT includes seamless changing of gear ratios and thus the traditional switching between slow and fast gear is no longer necessary. The operator can drive at any speed without having to stop, depending on the driving conditions. In a machine with CVT, the traditional hydrostatic transmission can be replaced with a separate CVT gear system. This enables lower fuel consumption as well as a higher tractive force, the benefits of which become obvious when driving on steep hills, soft terrain or in deep snow. CVT systems are based on a very robust technology. They have been previously used, for example, in large earthmoving machines,
BISON ACTIVE FRAME
so there is plenty of experience in demanding conditions. Ponsse is the only forest machine
manufacturer to offer CVT in forest machines.

T
he 2021 model has been updated with new components, including a new chassis, a new engine and a new control system, bringing it fully in line with the larger forwarders, albeit in a slightly smaller package. New Komatsu 845 options include a larger crane and SpeedShift. “The Komatsu 845 is a mid-class stalwart that’s now received a much-needed upgrade,” says Daniel Grabbe, Product Manager at Komatsu Forest. The Komatsu 845 in the 2021 line-up boasts an upgraded design with the same popular cab as the larger forwarders. The work environment is spacious and comfortable with good visibility in all directions – over both the hood and the load area, which is especially important in thinning. The latest engine installation ensures compliance with emission legislation while the overhauled AdBlue system increases reliability and simplifies service. Thanks to the user-friendly functions and tools of the new control system, MaxiXT, the best starting conditions are provided for ensuring full control of the timber from order to roadside delivery. To simplify loading, the Komatsu 845 now has a straight head board. Just like on the larger forwarders, the load space is
spacious and flexible with many customisation options for different harvesting conditions. There is now the option of a larger crane, which results in a more powerful machine well suited to handling heavy and long timber. Another new option for the Komatsu 845 is SpeedShift, a function that enables the operator to use the machine’s entire speed range without having to stop to change gears. SpeedShift automatically changes to a higher gear as the operator increases speed, resulting in both lower fuel consumption and a higher average transport speed. “The modern outfit reflects what lies beneath – with all these updates making the Komatsu 845 an agile and versatile midclass forwarder with many of the advantages of the larger forwarders,” Grabbe ends.

Smart Crane on Komatsu forwarders simplifies the working day for new and experienced operators alike Did you know that a forwarder operator spends as much as 70% of their working day operating the crane? This means there is much to be gained by finding ways to optimise crane operation. The most ergonomic work environment possible is also key to ensuring high and constant production throughout the working day. Komatsu Forest is now introducing Komatsu Smart Crane, a crane that reacts to the forwarder operator’s slightest movements, translating them into smooth and efficient crane operation.
C
rane operation requires several different but simultaneous actions, and over the space of a day these add up to many hand movements to forward timber to the roadside. Naturally, an experienced operator performs these movements without thinking, but a simplified approach would reduce the physical toll and optimise crane operation. This was the central idea behind the development of Smart Crane. Smart Crane offers advantages that include a reduced physical burden on the operator, enabling them to maintain high production throughout the day. This is made possible by the crane’s precision and smooth movement patterns, which with less sway and vibration removes stress from the operator. Smart Crane simplifies crane control too. With just three joystick movements, the operator can easily control the grapple with great precision. “The telescopic boom extension is controlled automatically, meaning one less thing for the operator to think about. Fewer joystick movements make the job easier – even for an experienced operator – and mean better operator ergonomics. Another advantage is that it is much easier for an inexperienced operator to
quickly hone their crane operation skills”, Daniel Grabbe, Product Manager forwarders explains. Smart Crane alters its behaviour depending on which stage of the crane cycle the grapple is at, just as an experienced operator does. This means that the crane behaves differently depending on whether the operator is gathering timber from the ground, loading it into the load space or stacking it at the roadside – everything to ensure maximum productivity every step of the way. This is seen, for example, in how Smart Crane prioritises the telescopic boom extension over the main boom, saving both time and fuel. “Our Smart Crane technology builds on SmartFlow, our intelligent
crane control that includes an intelligent crane valve to ensure that the right pressure and flow are supplied to the crane at all times, regardless of the load. With its active crane damping, it also ensures impressive responsiveness and great precision in all crane movements. The crane quite simply feels like an extension of your own arm”, Grabbe continues. Another reason for the crane’s excellent precision is that the Smart Crane system can distribute the movement between the crane functions so that vibrations and shocks are reduced. This contributes to better operator ergonomics while at the same time protecting the crane components and extend their service life.

Since such a large share of a forwarder operator’s working day involves crane operation, increased efficiency offers great potential. Smart Crane provides the operator with advantages such as simpler
crane operation, less physical strain and higher productivity. Advantages that benefit both profitability and the operator’s wellbeing.

The heavy duty Tigercat 1055C is a 14 t capacity forwarder designed to excel in both selective and final felling applications. The Tigercat F135T85 crane offers up to 8.5 m (335 in) of telescopic reach. With an expandable bunk and a choice of two wagon frame lengths, the 1055C is highly configurable and an excellent all-around forwarder. The 1055 features Tigercat’s innovative low-wide bunk system found on the larger 1075C and 1085C models. Low-wide provides superior lineof-sight to the load and reduces operator strain. With a 20 t capacity, the 1075C is designed for long distance forwarding and tough terrain. The standard F165T85 crane or optional F195T85 crane can handle all of your forwarding needs. With optional extreme duty Tigercat-built bogies, the 1075C excels in tough terrain and slopes and operates with minimal soil disturbance due to the extralong 1.89 m (74 in) bogie walking beams. An optional two-speed transmission is perfect for long forwarding distances and moderate terrain. The 1085C has a massive 25 t capacity. It excels in severe duty, steep slopes, and scarifying applications. An optional steep slope package includes a 25° rearward tilting crane, a moving reinforced gate, 21 t rear frame tethering lugs, and an optimized steep slope bunk design. A baffle system in the fuel tank ensures a constant supply on steep ground. The front bogie pinion and transmission are pressure lubricated. The Tigercat-built drivetrain provides torque that
is unmatched in the industry. WideRange provides plenty of tractive effort to carry large loads on steep slopes and achieves a maximum working speed of 7 km/h with a single gear ratio. The 1085C can attack and manoeuvre steep slopes under load with ease.
Hooked crane profile and lowwide bunks Tigercat cranes are capable of heavy loads and tough duty cycles. The slew base has a tapered roller bearing system designed to last the life of the machine, and no plain slew bearings or spherical rollers often used in other cranes. The crane’s hooked profile is designed to increase the working envelope of the crane for reduced machine travel and improved productivity. But where the crane really shines is when used in combination with Tigercat’s new low-wide expandable bunk systems. In addition to a conventional flat loading expandable bunk system, Tigercat has optional low-wide bunks, which are inclined rearward to reduce overall gate height and eliminate the need for a vertically sliding gate. In combination with the hooked crane, the low-wide bunk system significantly reduces the chance of crane contact with the gate or bunk stakes. Operator visibility and productivity is enhanced. The operator enjoys a clear sightline to the top of the load, increasing log placement accuracy and decreasing cycle times. In addition, the grapple stays within the operator’s view through the entire loading and unloading cycle for reduced operator strain. The low-wide system is available for both the 1075C and

Engineering Ingenuity In Forestry with Final Tier 4 Bandit Industries leans on its John Deere engine distributor to design a custom Final Tier 4 engine package for its forestry machine
I
ntegrating a Final Tier 4 engine into new or existing equipment doesn’t need to be a daunting task if the right partner can be secured. That’s been the experience of Michigan-based Bandit Industries. After years of powering its equipment with John Deere engines, and most recently Tier 3/ Stage III A models, the company has been transitioning its line of wood-processing machines to Final Tier 4 engines. Today, its John Deere-powered product line includes Bandit tree chippers, brush chippers, stump grinders, and more recently, its BTC-300 forestry mower. Design Engineering Manager
says Davis. “Most of our machines run in dusty and dirty environments with high amounts of vibration. We know that, so we design our machines to withstand harsh conditions. We build our machines to last. We build them tough.”
Custom creations Fitting a Final Tier 4 engine into a space once inhabited by an earlier tier engine often requires some engineering ingenuity. During these times, Bandit Industries turns to its John Deere engine distributor, Superior Diesel, to shepherd them through the process and help make the transition as easy and as seamless as possible. John Deere engines can be

That way, there’s less engineering labor on our end to review and suggest changes.” That engineering collaboration recently went into high gear with the new BTC-300. “When we first set out to design the BTC-300, the only engine that would fit the confines of the forestry mower was a 250 hp (187 kW) engine,” he says. “However, we wanted a 300 hp (224 kW) engine, and at the time, the catalyst on a higher-horsepower engine model just would not fit within the space of our machine.” Bandit and Superior Diesel’s engineering teams worked together to create a custom power unit. “The engineers moved the DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system closer to the top of the engine to make the power unit more compact. They also relocated the engine-mounted filter and installed a custom radiator,” relates Davis. “The package comes drop-in ready.” With each redesign and new build, Bandit Industries keeps coming back to John Deere. “We like working with Superior Diesel,” says Davis. “They seem to

Improved Constant Cut for all C-units From June 1, the cutting unit on all C-heads, Constant Cut, will receive an upgraded design. The upgrade contains no less than 25 points and represents a number of improvements for customers, both in terms of increased productivity and better flow in the production.
C
onstant Cut, Komatsu’s intelligent cutting unit, ensures that the head has a constant and efficient saw chain speed throughout the complete cutting cycle. This ensures efficient cutting and limits problems with cutting cracks. Now the cutting unit has undergone a major upgrade, which means that all C-units get a new, fresh Constant Cut with productive benefits. Below are some of the biggest new features. It’s news that we believe our customers are happy to hear. The improvements come from customer feedback and we have implemented it in our development. In this way, it is an important team work where we together develop our products, in this case heads, says Tobias Ettemo, Product manager for Harvesters and Heads.
Less unplanned stops The chain tensioning of the Constant Cut function is improved, this reduces expensive downtime for the contractor. Another advantage of a better and smoother chain tensioning is that
both chain and saw bar can be used longer. The saw bar mount has a more robust design for increased servicelife. The mechanics around these components have been optimised to ensure that the saw bar is more stable inside the saw box. Customers who have tested the new cutting unit feel that they get a straighter cut, and that the saw bar does not sway as much. Another advantage is that the chain lubrication has improved, as the oil is better steered into the lubrication groove and out to the bar. Better chain lubrication also extends the life of the saw bar, explains Tobias Ettemo.
Better protection and stronger material A new protective cover has been introduced for the auto-release feature, which protects the saw bar mount from sawdust and debris. This means that when changing the chain, the operator does not have to clean the saw bar mount and the saw bar clamp as often as before, thereby reducing downtime.
44 International Forest Industries | JUNE / JULY 2021
Several components of the cutting unit have been upgraded with a stronger and more durable material, which increases the service-life of the entire cutting unit. The bearing between the swivel housing and the saw motor has a better fit to reduce unwanted movements, providing a more stable cutting unit and also less abrasion on the swivel seals. The material in the swivel seals has been replaced with one that is more flexible during movement and less sensitive to abrasion, which reduces the risk of oil leakage. The new swivel seals are also much easier to install as they do not damage as easily when installed. In addition, no special tool is needed to change them, which facilitates service in the field.

It efficiently operates at altitudes reaching 9,842 ft (3000m) without derating. Fuel tank capacity is more than double the previous model, which means the new 538 can operate up to five shifts before refilling.
Improved comfort and safety The all-new Certified Forestry cab design for the Cat Next Generation 538 dramatically improves operator comfort and safety. “The cab is 25% larger with 50% greater overall visibility than our previous 538,” said Bottone. “Plus, it has a heated seat and a more ergonomically friendly layout, so the operator doesn’t have to exert much effort to be efficient and productive.” Ingress/egress is easier due to the cab’s wider and taller door and tilt-up console on the operator’s seat. The machine’s new dual HVAC system keeps operators comfortable regardless
of working in the summer heat or during subfreezing ambient winter temperatures. Its specially insulated roof and improved window and door seals keep in-cab noise levels low. Operators can start the 538’s engine with a simple push of a button. The new Operator ID allows each operator to quickly program and store their own machine settings and attachment function preferences. A larger 10-in (254mm) high-resolution touchscreen monitor delivers intuitive navigation through operating menus and includes a digital version of the operator’s manual for quick reference. An available Cat PL161 Attachment Locator assists in finding work tools within a range of 200 ft (60m), even when covered by overgrowth or debris. A larger, 1.25-in (32-mm) polycarbonate front window improves visibility and operating safety. Smaller cab pillars with the large panoramic windows and recessed right front of the machine contribute to the 50% visibility improvement over the previous model. Two different cab risers – 6.5-in (165-mm) fixed or 48-in (1 219-mm) hydraulic tilt – are available to help operators better see the jobsite. Video feed from the standard rearview camera is easily visible on the high-resolution monitor to enhance operating safety; an optional sideview camera improves visibility even more.
Compared to the previous model, the Next Generation 538 lowers maintenance costs by up to 15% over the course of 12,000 hours of operation. “We improved our filters and our service intervals, and we improved ground-level access to service points to make daily maintenance quick and safe, including a new ground-level dipstick for checking the engine oil,” said Bottone. “Our new electrohydraulic control system eliminates the need for a pilot filter and pilot oil altogether.” The improved filters and synchronized replacement intervals result in greater uptime and 50 fewer filters being consumed over 12,000 hours. Fuel filters feature a synchronized 1,000-hour change interval, which doubles the service life of the previous model. A new hydraulic oil return filter improves filtration and delivers a 3,000-hour service life, which is 50% longer than previous designs. The high-efficiency, hydraulically driven cooling fan runs only when necessary; reversing intervals are programmable to enable the fan to keep the radiator cores clean without interrupting the work schedule. Product Link technology captures critical operating data, fault codes, and machine location information to boost fleet management efficiency. The Next Generation 538 has Remote Troubleshoot capability when within cell coverage. Remote Troubleshoot analyzes real-time machine data captured by Product Link for diagnostics of fault codes without impacting machine productivity, and it can potentially save a service trip to the jobsite. Also, owners can be sure the 538 is operating with the most current version of software with standard Remote Flash (dependent on cell service), which updates machine software around the production schedule. ”°Loggers who want more production, greater comfort and safety, and lower maintenance cost will love the Next Generation 538,”said Bottone. “When you add in our Cat dealer network that’s committed to forestry, you get a winning combination of machine and support that can’t be beat for moving timber.”

Smart Crane on Komatsu forwarders simplifies the working day for new & experienced operators alike
The telescopic boom extension is controlled automatically, meaning one less thing for the operator to think about. Fewer joystick movements make the job easier – even for an experienced operator – and mean better operator ergonomics. Another advantage is that it is much easier for an inexperienced operator to quickly hone their crane operation skills Daniel Grabbe, Product Manager Forwarders SEE PAGES 40/41
