AN INTERVIEW WITH DANIELLE PALM

You may not think of dancing when you think of hair, but if you’re a stylist with a background in dance like Danielle Palm at Alkali, each strand of hair moves to a beautiful rhythm. To her, cutting and coloring are like complex choreographed dances that move in graceful harmony, perfectly tuned to each client’s personality and lifestyle.

YOU WERE A DANCER BEFORE JOINING ALKALI, RIGHT? WHAT LED YOU FROM DANCER TO HAIRSTYLIST?

Yes! I was a dancer for 20 years. I started dancing when I was four and continued through college. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. Dance is actually how I fell in love with hair and makeup— I had to learn how to get performance-ready. So really, it was a natural progression for me.

DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN DANCE INSPIRE YOUR WORK AS A STYLIST? IF SO, HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE IT INTO YOUR WORK?

It sure does! Lighting sets the emotion or mood for a dance performance. Bringing out different tones in hair color has a similar effect, except I’m setting the stage to “light up” a client’s personality through their hair.

WHAT’S YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERVICE?

Balayages—they give the hair such “movement!” I also love how a balayage can add a pop of color, yet still give you that “lived-in,” natural look. They’re also low maintenance and grow out beautifully.

HOW DO YOU PERSONALIZE YOUR SERVICES FOR EACH CLIENT?

By listening! I always pay close attention to what my clients tell me. This way, I can truly understand their needs and provide their desired results.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR AT-HOME HAIR CARE?

As someone with hair as dry as the Sahara Desert, I can’t overstate the difference a high-quality deep conditioner makes! I recommend

Believe it or not, I love to exercise. I guess it’s the dancer in me! I also love listening to pretty much any kind of music, baking, doing crafts, and hanging out with my 10-year-old son, Liam. And yes I still dance…my kitchen makes for an amazing dance floor!

September is always a special month in the Forsyth Woman magazine world – it’s our anniversary month! Nineteen years ago, my mom, Keela, launched this incredible venture after transitioning from her corporate job of nearly 25 years. It was part of a significant downsizing, and she chose to take an early retirement. She and I joke often about how bad both of our memories are, but one very vivid memory I have is when she made the decision to move forward with Forsyth Woman. I was 15 years old, and she was 46. Her family and friends thought she was crazy (the woman had NO publishing experience), but this only pushed her to want to succeed even more. I’ve always admired this about her. Growing up with not one, but TWO parents who were entrepreneurs made for a unique childhood that taught me tons of lessons about hard work, perseverance and passion.

This month also marks my 50th issue publishing Forsyth Woman! Keela handed over the reins with the August 2020 issue with plans to retire at Lake Norman. If you’ve been a reader for a while, you know that isn’t how the story goes. After trying out the retirement life for a bit, she decided she had her heart set on starting a magazine in the Lake Norman community and LKN Magazine was born in September 2022. (Happy 2nd Anniversary LKN Magazine!)

Over the last 50 months/issues, a LOT has happened! We’ve survived COVID and its extremely scary effects including a worldwide paper shortage, which was possibly even scarier than COVID in the publishing world. I opened a CrossFit gym, Washington Park CrossFit. We launched our annual Women on the Move conference, which has been more powerful and inspirational than I ever thought possible. We also launched the Forsyth Magazines podcast. WHEW! What a whirlwind!

THANK YOU to our readers for picking up Forsyth Woman each month, for tuning into our podcast, for following us on social media, for attending our many events…THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. It’s a blessing that I get to wake up and do this for a living. I mean, wow.

If you are reading this, you’ve already seen the absolutely phenomenal photo on our cover this month. Amber (owner of Alkali Hair Studio) had quite a vision, and if I do say so myself, I think Jon Eric Johnson (JEJ Photos) did a remarkable job of bringing it to life. I had the honor of attending this photo shoot and witnessing the talent in front of and behind the camera. You can read all about Alkali and their very exciting news on page 52.

Keeping It Real BURN

YOUR BOATS!

YOU WERE BORN FOR GREATNESS!

I know, I know, you’ve heard that before. Reality is, you’ve likely heard this Truth so often that it doesn’t really compute anymore. Besides, you assume it’s for everyone else, right? (Nope! I’m talking to YOU!)

Every human was born to be great and do great things! In fact, it’s in our very DNA! God engraved HIS image upon us, making us to resemble HIM!

Tragically, most folks drudge through their days merely trying to stay afloat. It feels like “GREAT” has left the building, and you’re too tired to chase after it. (Yes, I’m reading your mail!)

When I think of great warriors and winners throughout history, Alexander the Great comes to mind. This ancient commander found a way to conquer more than half of the known world at such a ridiculously youthful age!

One of the many things that made this icon such a success derived from his bold strategies that rushed into every battle with a do-or-die kind of attitude.

In fact, in the journey to conquer the unconquerable Persian Empire, Alexander did something especially crazy! When he and his soldiers arrived on the shores of Persia with no chance of winning, Alexander instructed his men to burn their boats! (WHAT?!)

Yep! That’s what this fearless commander required – and he went first!

In that moment, burning their boats left them no other option but to fight as if their very lives depended on it – because they did!

Against insurmountable odds, this leader offered no Plan B! This now highly motivated band of brothers committed to victory at all cost, no matter how outnumbered they felt! And get this, THEY WON! They not only survived; they succeeded!

We humans have this tendency to seek middle ground. We don’t want to appear too extreme in any direction. It seems unseemly. After all, what will others say of us if we fail epically?

Listen friend, carrying around a Plan B usually kills Plan A! When you keep “something to fall back on,” you will almost inevitably fall back when the going gets tough. And friends, I promise you, if you’re doing anything worthwhile, the going will get tough!

It’s time to eliminate retreat from your situation! Whatever success you desire comes when you burn your boats!

I’m not suggesting you live recklessly or carelessly, but I AM suggesting you live fearlessly!

Did you know God says, “Do not fear” 365 times throughout Scripture? He knew we’d need one for every single day of the year!

If you can’t do it unafraid, then do it afraid! Just do it!

Decide what matters most to your heart. Then, listen for God’s heart in it all. He cares about all that matters to you! HE DOES!

God made you for greatness! His dreams for you far exceed your ideas of greatness, I promise! Besides that, He’s got what it takes to get you there.

So, strategize with the One who knows your end from your beginning. He has jotted your roadmap even before you ask. He knows the detours and the sharp turns that make you second guess your staying power.

That’s why you’ve got to burn your boats! Throw your whole self into this pursuit like retreat is not an option! From this position, you’ll not only survive; you’ll succeed.

You’ll be living proof that you were made for Greatness! Then, you can show someone else how to find their greatness, too!

Lindsey Mae Stimpson | Painter & Muralist

This month’s featured artist, Lindsey Stimpson, transforms spaces big and small by inspiring joy and bringing them to life through her abundant creativity and timeless works of art!

How would you describe your work?

By transforming spaces through murals and window art, I create impactful original works of art that inspire joy and bring new life to every environment. I love tailoring my style to meet my client’s vision, but naturally, my touch is more loose, colorful and driven by emotion.

What influences your art?

I believe the best (and most impactful) work is driven by emotion and connection. My work is ever evolving but I always approach creating with joy, gratitude and vulnerability. I am intrigued by the human condition, as well as communication and connection. The priorities we place on religion, culture, morals, and other people, are revealing as to who we truly are. I start a piece with an idea from these thoughts and observations, and I find myself exploring elements of shape and color. while working in layers.

How have you grown, personally, as an artist?

I’ve been creating since I was a little girl. My academic path led me to Meredith College, where I studied Studio Art and Business Administration. My career has been dedicated to the arts and allowed me to try different things and find new ways to bring my creativity to others. It’s been amazing to see my progression throughout the years.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

Not a day goes by that I don’t create! Currently, I dedicate my time to painting full time at Beechwood Metalworks in Burlington, NC. Balancing my daytime work at Beechwood with additional evening and weekend mural jobs, I am constantly producing art and love taking on commissioned projects.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

I love painting residential spaces! The first large project I landed was a sage green hand painted dining room. The client could not find a wallpaper that fit her vision, and we worked together to create a one-of-a-kind, elegant, dreamy landscape capturing her farm. It’s still one of my favorite projects.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I’m really excited about several upcoming commercial mural projects! It’s especially a joy painting for churches and healthcare facilities. It’s my hope the artwork I create in those spaces touches many lives. Also, I’m itching to do more residential work, especially monochromatic landscape murals in homes. It’s a unique way of displaying family heritage and memories, custom to the client’s space, and the impact they make just feels incredibly meaningful.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

Honestly, “make” as much as possible! Like anything else, it takes PRACTICE. Make artwork, post it online for others to see and embrace sharing it with people! We need more color in this world.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EYE HEALTH: Everyday Practices for Optimal Vision

Understanding how your eyes convert light energy into signals that your brain uses to create images and control hormone and neurotransmitter release throughout your body is essential. Given that clear, healthy vision is crucial for overall well being, this article provides actionable steps to improve your eye health and reduce age-related vision decline.

DAILY PRACTICES FOR EYE HEALTH

Your eyes constantly adjust to help you maintain a clear view of the world. The lens of your eye is most relaxed when you are looking at distant objects, such as the horizon. However, focusing on nearby objects, like computer screens or phones, requires the eye muscles to work harder, which can eventually alter the shape of your eyeball and lead to myopia (nearsightedness).

TIPS FOR EYE RELAXATION:

Balance Near and Far Viewing:

• Periodically allow your eyes to relax throughout the day by looking at distant objects. This can help balance the strain caused by prolonged close-up work.

• If you spend a lot of time on close-up tasks, aim to view distant objects multiple times a day. Take breaks by looking out a window or taking a walk outside.

Combat Headaches and Fatigue:

• To alleviate tension headaches caused by close-up viewing, relax all your face muscles, including your jaw, for 1-5 minutes every 30-60 minutes.

• Spend more time viewing distant objects in a relaxed manner.

Engage in Optic Flow:

• Activities like walking, running or biking outdoors can reduce anxiety and improve mood through the panoramic vision and optic flow these activities create.

• Avoid reading on your phone during these activities to ensure you benefit from the natural environment.

Sunlight Exposure Reduces Myopia Risk:

• Studies show that children who spend more than two hours a day in sunlight have a lower incidence of myopia (nearsightedness). This benefit is likely due to both far viewing and the activation of specific neurons in the eye by sunlight, which improves blood flow and supports eye health.

• Aim for at least two hours of sunlight exposure daily, preferably without sunglasses. However, never stare directly at the sun.

EYE TRAINING EXERCISES

Incorporate the following exercises to strengthen your eye muscles and enhance your ability to focus on objects at various distances, thus combating age-related vision decline.

Smooth Pursuit Eye Task:

• Follow a small moving object with your eyes, aiming for smooth movements rather than quick, jerky ones. Practice for 2-3 minutes, three times a week.

• Examples: Track a bird in flight or a ball during a sports game.

Near-Far Exercises:

• Hold a small object (like a pen) about 1.5 feet from your eyes, and slowly move it closer while keeping it in focus until it becomes blurry. Then, move it further away.

• Practice for 1-2 minutes every other day to enhance your focus flexibility and strengthen eye muscles.

NUTRITION AND SUPPLEMENTS FOR EYE HEALTH

A nutrient-rich diet can support the health of your photoreceptors and other eye components.

Vitamin A:

• Essential for phototransduction, the process of converting light into electrical signals.

• Foods rich in vitamin A: Dark leafy greens, yellow/orange vegetables and fruits.

Lutein:

• Supports the eye’s phototransduction process and can reduce age-related macular degeneration.

• Sources of lutein: Egg yolk and dark leafy vegetables.

By consuming a diet rich in non-processed fruits and vegetables, you can ensure your eyes receive the necessary antioxidants and vitamins for optimal health.

Shelley Hundley was nominated in last month’s edition as a stellar person of prominence who gives so much of herself to her community. Here, she speaks about her background, the event she now oversees each year and how we as a community can get involved!

Tell us about your formative years. Where did you grow up, and what were your early experiences that shaped who you are today?

I spent my childhood in Spindale (Rutherford County), NC with both of my parents and an older sister. When I was only 18 months old and my sister was 3.5 years old, our family was faced with an immense, life-changing challenge. That morning, my mother woke up and realized that she could not move or feel anything below her waist. She had not been sick, had not fallen or had any injury prior to this happening. She lost more and more mobility as she got older and spent her last eight to ten years fully wheelchair-bound. My mother taught elementary self-contained special education, and she was no doubt an inspiration to her students and their families because she never let her disability stop her. I was taught that my mom’s students may have a different ability level than other students but that they were no less than anyone else.

My freshman year of college, I ended up taking a part time job working with a little boy with autism. I received a bachelor’s of arts degree in education of students with mental disabilities as well as my masters of education of students with learning disabilities. I have taught high school resource, occupational courses of study and self-contained classes. My last four years working in a school district was as the district-wide Applied Behavior Analysis and Transition Specialist.

Tell us all about the organization you lead.

Joy Prom is an annual, full-scale, communitysponsored prom for guests age 16 and older with different abilities and special needs. Joy Prom has been held at Truist Stadium for the last two years and will be held there again this year. When guests arrive for the evening, they enter the venue down the red carpet with a cheering crowd clapping and waving at them. While they are at prom, there are opportunities to have their photos professionally taken,

play bingo and other fun games. It is definitely an unforgettable evening for our guests, caregivers and volunteers!

Since 2015, Joy Prom has grown from 100 special needs guests and approximately 150 volunteers to 355 guests and approximately 600 volunteers in 2023! Over the past few years, Joy Prom has not only grown in guests and volunteers but also in donors. Because many of our guests, volunteers and donors come from outside the Winston-Salem area, we chose to rebrand ourselves to Joy Prom Piedmont-Triad in order to truly represent the areas that we serve.

I have held multiple leadership positions with Joy Prom since 2015 and took over as the executive director in 2020. I also started and run The Fairy Godmother’s Closet each year that provides our female guests with prom attire.

Give us perspective into what satisfaction you gain from what you do on a daily basis.

I have gotten an incredible amount of joy from being involved with Joy Prom for the past nine years. I have not only met but have created meaningful relationships with many of our guests, caregivers, volunteers and the businesses that have chosen to support Joy Prom financially or through in-kind donations.

Provide an example of a time that moved you deeply when helping others like you do.

I could give so many examples of times that I have been deeply moved by being a part of Joy Prom. Honestly, every time we hold an event, the hugs and the pure joy that I see radiate from our guests, the caregivers, our volunteers and anyone else who is involved that evening is more fulfilling for my soul than one could ever imagine.

Specifically, how can our readers help your organization?

Joy Prom 2024 will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Truist Stadium.

As you can imagine, holding an event this large takes months of planning, hundreds of volunteers and an incredible amount of financial support. We are still in need of financial support! Celebrating World’s ALZHEIMER’S Day

Through Being Aware of the Early Signs

This September 12th, join many in recognizing the families and loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.

This celebration is a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association is one of the first resources to go to regarding learning more about the more than 55 million people across the world affected by this terrible disease. As someone who has lost her father to this dreadful disease, I know firsthand how painful it is to see someone you love wither away. Whether you also have a loved one with this disease or would simply like to learn more about Alzheimer’s or dementia, this September is a wonderful time for all to make sure they are aware of the early signs of this dreadful disease. Early detection is crucial in helping those suffering from ALZ.

Before looking into the obvious signs that someone is experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia, what exactly is the difference between the two? According to the article, “Alzheimer’s versus Dementia: What is the Difference,” by UCLA School of Medicine Writer Diane Siervert, “Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause or type of dementia, accounting for the majority of cases.” Think of Alzheimer’s Disease as a specific type of dementia characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. Whereas Alzheimer’s Disease is a specific type of dementia, dementia is the overarching term that refers to a range of memory loss symptoms. “Dementia is a general term used to describe a set of symptoms that affect cognitive abilities, memory, thinking and behavior,” Siervert writes. “It is not a specific disease but rather an umbrella term for a group of symptoms.”

For my father, we noticed a few memory issues and cognitive symptoms, which led us to

take him to a few doctors who specialized in dementia and the initial stages of Alzheimer’s. At first, he was diagnosed as being within the “mild dementia stage;” meaning he was beginning to show the early signs of having dementia. It was not until months later, when he began to quickly decline, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

All this said, what symptoms should one look for if concerned about their own loved one?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association article, there are 10 early signs and symptoms for Alzheimer’s and dementia.

According to their website, the first sign is “memory loss that disrupts daily life.” This sign by far, was what led us to worry about our father. If someone is asking the same question repeatedly, we should give pause.

The second sign is “challenges in planning or solving problems.” If your loved one has trouble planning, or working with simple math/finances, this could be another sign for which to look out.

The third sign is “difficulty completing familiar tasks.” When our father began to get confused with dressing himself, and would put on shirts inside out, we knew that something was clearly wrong.

If you know someone who gets confused about the date and time, and often eats at odd times, or wakes up to start their day at 2:00 a.m., then this is the fourth sign.

The fifth sign is “trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships.” For example, if someone has trouble judging distance, and is increasingly becoming a troublesome driver, this is a clear sign of one of the two diseases.

“New problems with words in speaking and writing” is the sixth sign. If you know someone who recently calls familiar objects odd words (“hand clock” for a

“watch”), then you may need to investigate.

The seventh sign is “misplacing things.” While this may cause everyone to think they may have the disease, especially busy parents, with ALZ or dementia patients, this sign is more obvious because the person is unable in any way to retrace their steps and may get frustrated at losing the item.

“Decreased or poor judgment” is our eighth sign and occurs when the loved one makes poor choices, like donating to a cause that is clearly a fraud or having suddenly poor grooming habits.

If your loved one is suddenly not wanting to socialize, this is our ninth sign. “Withdrawal from work or social activities” is a clear indicator that something is off.

Finally, the 10th sign is the most difficult one to experience. “Change in mood and personality” is something of which to be wary. For my family, my father’s personality shifted during those final years. He went from being incredibly happy go-lucky to being moody and short tempered. Sadly, this was a clear sign for us that he was sick.

Overall, while September 21st is a momentous day for all to either donate or volunteer at an organization that recognizes ALZ or dementia patients, these loved ones need help all year. As mentioned above, early detection is one of the best methods to begin helping your loved one.

By providing them with the support and love they need, together we all can begin removing the negative stigma around this disease and help them live their final years with the dignity they deserve.

1 cup Granulated Cane Sugar

4 large Eggs

½ cup All Purpose Flour

¼ cup Unsalted Butter, melted

2 tsp. Vanilla Extract, or vanilla bean paste

For the Graham Cracker Crust:

2 packages Graham Crackers

½ cup Melted Butter

1. To Make the Peach Cobbler Portion: Preheat the oven to 400F. Line a large baking pan with parchment paper.

2. Either directly on the pan or in a bowl, combine all the brown sugar crumb ingredients. Mix until crumb-like texture, then add to half of the baking pan.

3. Add HALF of the sliced peaches to the other half of the baking pan to toss in the half of the sugar and cinnamon. (You’ll want to roast the remaining half with sugar and cinnamon to top the cheesecake right before serving.)

4. Roast until juicy, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

5. To Make the Graham Cracker Crust: Reduce the oven heat to 350F. Grease a 8-9” springform cheesecake pan.

6. In a blender, combine the graham crackers and melted butter. Pulse until crumblike, then press evenly along the bottom and sides of the cheesecake pan.

7. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove from heat to cool for a few minutes.

8. To Make the Cheesecake Filling: In a blender, combine all ingredients. Blend until very smooth.

9. To Assemble the Peach Cobbler Cheesecake: Pour half of the cheesecake filling in the crust, even out with the back of a spoon, then layer with the roasted peaches and half of the crumb. Spoon the remaining cheesecake filling on top.

10. Bake for 45-60 minutes, just until the center is set but still slightly jiggly.

11. Let cool in the oven with the door cracked for 20 minutes, then remove to chill in the fridge for at least 2-4 hours or overnight.

12. When ready to serve, add more roasted peaches and the remaining crumb on top to enjoy!

IS EVERYDAY SATURDAY?

Thinking ahead to retirement,many of us:

Imagined that every day would be Saturday – unencumbered and ours alone to define. Thought that once we crossed the finish line, time would be more malleable – ours alone to fill. Hoped that the constancy of emailing, texting and zooming would be ours alone to determine.

Ours alone looked like a future where every day would indeed be Saturday once the rest was blessedly behind us.

SELF

CARE, CAREGIVER OR BOTH?

Well, here’s a reality check – while illness or chronic limiting conditions aren’t inevitable as we age, they are commonplace. In fact, the National Council on Aging notes that nearly 95% of adults 60 and older have at least one chronic condition, and nearly 80% have two or more. The most common of these include:

• Arthritis

• Heart disease

• Hypertension

• Cancer

• Type 2 diabetes

• Dementia

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

• Depression

• Hearing loss

• Cataracts and refractive errors

• Back and neck pain

• Osteoarthritis

And yet, few talk about the practical and emotional aspects of preparing for a stage in life that will likely require:

• a great deal more and different forms of self care

• assuming the role of caregiver for a partner or family member

• doing both, simultaneously.

My tell me the truth girl inquiry – not to mention my own lived experience – tells me that the checklist that framed your everyday for the past, oh, 40 years or so will suddenly or eventually be populated with a whole new set of urgencies and to dos, so get ready!

TRUISM #1: NOT EVERY DAY IS SATURDAY

Not every day is Saturday in retirement when managing chronic limiting conditions is in play. I’m sorry, but there you have it. That’s because most of the work of “managing” takes place on familiar terrain – ye old Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. That’s something you know well, so, plan to tap into the same skills that made you effective in managing your professional work – project management, time management, being proactive and having the mindset of a team player. Trust me, you will need those front desk people, schedulers, nurses and therapists to help you navigate the healthcare system as you face new and ongoing challenges. Show your appreciation for their role in your journey and always treat them well.

Also, be sure to use a calendar system that works for you, whether that’s your ubiquitous phone or a ginormous desk or wall calendar. Trust me, you will need to refer, coordinate and juggle – especially if you are tending to your own issues as well as those of a loved one.

TRUISM #2: YOUR “TRIBE” MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

You know the mantra: “It takes a village.” Almost always, when you are there for a neighbor, a neighbor will be there for you. Ensuring that you have people to reach out to for emotional support and for practical hands on help will be key to your sanity! Our people all live elsewhere which is why our home is filled with Hallmark greeting cards and small “thinking of you” gifts. These, along with the “call me when you need me” help from those nearby is priceless.

TRUISM #3: TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF IS KEY TO YOUR HEALTH AND PEACE OF MIND

I know, we get really tired of hearing this. But, this wise counsel is both spot on and timeless. While self care is individual, common actions you can engage in include things like:

• Eating healthy foods

• Working out regularly

• Taking time to relax

• Journaling

• Being with friends

• Making time for your special hobby

• Finding peaceful solitude

I “trick” myself into “working out regularly” by doing a 10-minute online video. Because 10 minutes? I can do that! Or take “being with friends.” I have a standing call with a dear friend in Massachusetts every Saturday afternoon. It’s a “date” that only an emergency can interrupt.

While every day may not be Saturday in retirement, you can equip yourself for an awesome journey ahead.

Behaviors

Most of us are a part of teams inside and outside of our workplaces. I’m sure we have worked with some teams that are effective and others that are rather dysfunctional. So, what makes some teams function better than others? According to Patrick Lencioni, the author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the characteristics of a cohesive, high-performing team are trust, conflict, commitment, accountability and results. He says that each of these behaviors builds upon and supports the others. Let’s explore these behaviors in more detail.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF TRUST

Trust is the foundation of a great team. Without trust, very little progress can be made. Teams with an absence of trust display behaviors such as concealing weaknesses and mistakes; not asking for help or feedback; holding grudges; and not helping outside of the scope of their specific job.

In cohesive teams, members trust each other’s abilities, intentions and integrity. Furthermore, they are comfortable being vulnerable with one another about their weaknesses, mistakes, fears and behaviors.

MASTERING CONFLICT

Members of teams who trust one another are not afraid to engage in conflict around ideas. Conflict is sometimes considered to be a bad thing, and many people avoid it. However, conflict can be constructive and is needed to find the best solutions and make great decisions. If members don’t have an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions on issues, they won’t buy into decisions.

Teams that don’t engage in healthy conflict may display behaviors like back-channel politics and personal attacks; avoiding controversial subjects that may be important to team success; and wasting time and energy with posturing and interpersonal risk management.

ACHIEVING COMMITMENT

If team members trust one another and have had the opportunity to discuss and engage in constructive conflict, there is a greater likelihood that they will commit to and support decisions even if they initially disagree. If there is a lack of commitment on a team, members will do as little as possible to support ideas and will not promote them on their respective teams.

To achieve commitment, members need to feel that all opinions and ideas have been put on the table and considered. Once that has occurred and there is clarity around the next steps, they will be more likely to buy in and support decisions that are made.

EMBRACING ACCOUNTABILITY

Teams that gain commitment to decisions and standards of performance hold one another accountable for adhering to the decisions and standards. If there is a lack of accountability, teams don’t stick to decisions and accomplish goals.

Teams that embrace accountability don’t rely on the team leader as the primary source of accountability. They will also hold themselves and others accountable.

FOCUSING ON RESULTS

Achieving team goals is the reason why a team exists. If each of the prior behaviors is functioning well, members are likely focused on the team’s goals. They will not give in to temptations to place their departments, career aspirations or egodriven status ahead of the team’s collective results.

By cultivating these five behaviors, teams can create a positive and productive environment that drives success and achieves goals.

The Neverending Pursuit of Money Making Dollars, Making $ense

What would it be like to be ultra wealthy? Would it mean homes in Hawaii and Paris? Do you envision sailing a luxury yacht across the Mediterranean? What about chartering a trip to space? While it is fun to imagine, this is not the reality for most of us.

You might have heard the term “Ultra High Net Worth” (UHNW) before. It is a term for those who have north of $30 million in net worth. There are currently 142,990 UHNW individuals in North America1 out of 369 million in total2. That is less than one-tenth of 1% (.03% to be exact).

There simply are not that many people flying private, sitting front row at sporting events or buying private islands…contrary to what we see on TV or in social media. So, why do we sometimes feel the desire for more, even though we are doing just fine financially?

The mindset of accumulating wealth is deeply ingrained in most of our psyches. It is important in the sense that we all have goals and want to retire comfortably, but it can be dangerous in its extremes. Let us take a moment to understand some of the psychology behind why this happens.

• Social Conditioning: From a young age, we are bombarded with messages that equate success with material wealth. This fosters a mindset where financial achievement is seen as the ultimate marker of success.

• Comparison Culture: Social media and the digital age have amplified our exposure to the lives of the affluent, often presenting a skewed reality that glamorizes wealth and luxury. This constant comparison feeds into the desire for more.

• Economic Insecurity: For some, the pursuit of wealth stems from a place of economic insecurity during their upbringing. This drive, while initially motivated by a quest for stability, can evolve into an endless chase for more.

• The Illusion of Happiness: There is a widespread misconception that more money directly correlates with more happiness. This can lead people to prioritize wealth accumulation, often at the expense of other aspects of well being.

• Fear of Missing Out (FOMO): Witnessing peers or counterparts achieve financial milestones can trigger a sense of FOMO, propelling the urge to amass wealth in order not to feel left behind.

• Seeking Validation: Accumulating wealth is often viewed as a means of garnering respect, admiration and validation from others. This external affirmation becomes a driving force, overshadowing intrinsic motivations and self worth.

• The Hedonic Treadmill: As people acquire more wealth, their expectations and desires adjust upward. For example, it might have once felt aspirational to sit in first class, but having experienced that many times, you set your sights on flying private.

You have probably heard that additional wealth does not equate to increased happiness. It is so true, but we can all use a reminder from time to time. The same holds true for habits that help us practice contentment. Here are a few to get you started:

• Cultivate Gratitude: Regularly acknowledging what you are thankful for can shift your focus from what is missing to what is present.

• Embrace Simplicity: Simplifying your life can help clarify what truly matters, reducing the noise of material desires and fostering a deeper appreciation for the essentials.

• Invest in Relationships: Strong connections with family and friends are a cornerstone of happiness. Invest time and energy in nurturing these bonds.

• Pursue Passion: Engaging in activities that resonate with your interests and values brings intrinsic joy and satisfaction.

• Give Back: Contributing to the well being of others through acts of kindness, volunteering or philanthropy can provide a sense of purpose and happiness.

As we navigate our financial journeys, it is vital to remember that the true essence of wealth lies in well being, not in the endless accumulation of money. The moments of connection, the pursuit of passions and the acts of generosity are what truly enrich our lives. By finding contentment in what we have and who we are, we can escape the neverending pursuit of money and embrace a life filled with genuine happiness and fulfillment.

FALL GETAWAY IN THE SMOKIES

While September is still steaming hot in the south, things cool off more quickly in the mountains. Western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee are home to the best amenities the Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. Here are a few family friendly fall getaway hotspots that will cure your children’s back-to-school blues this autumn.

BRYSON CITY

One of my favorite locations in North Carolina, Bryson City is a charming small town with idyllic shopping streets, tasty eateries and state-of-theart camping facilities. Deep Creek Campground is beloved among more primitive campers who want to ditch full hook-ups for a crackling campfire in the brisk mountain air. Packed with fly fishermen, waterfalls, hiking trails and group camping sites, Deep Creek Campground is a favorite pastime for many campers, including myself. With tent campsite rates starting at $30 per night, visit recreation.gov to reserve your site ahead of time. In the area and want to look around? Scope out the campground in person at 1912 East Deep Creek Road in Bryson City.

Also stationed in Bryson City is the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad offering families scenic rides through the Nantahala Gorge. Close to Christmastime, the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad operates as the Polar Express to bring the magic of the holiday season to passengers on board.

FONTANA DAM

According to blueridgeheritage.com, Fontana Dam is the tallest dam east of the Rocky Mountains at 480 feet in height. Constructed in 1942, Fontana Dam once solved an electricity crisis in east Tennessee and is now one of the best places for boating, fishing and education in the Smokies. Frequented by Appalachian Trail hikers due to its hot shower facilities, the visitor’s center is open May through October. Your family will gawk at the massive structure and mountainous beauty surrounding the Little Tennessee River.

CADES COVE

Located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Townsend, TN, Cades Cove is a sight for sore eyes. A scenic valley accessible by an 11-mile one-way loop road, Cades Cove can be a full-day trek during peak season but will certainly not disappoint those looking to take in the beautiful wildflowers, wildlife and history of the Smokies. Bear sightings are frequent, and hiking trails are abundant. Visitors also love taking a quick tour of historic churches, homes and cemeteries throughout the park. Park for a picnic, hike to Abrams Falls and stop by the visitor’s center for souvenir shopping. GATLINBURG AND PIGEON FORGE

Taking a family trip to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is a childhood rite of passage. Ideal for families with small children, Pigeon Forge, TN is the Great Smoky Mountain mecca of adventure, attractions and more. With nearby theme parks such as Dolly Parton’s decades-old Dollywood, in addition to mountain coasters, mini golf and white water rafting, there is never a dull moment in Pigeon Forge. Catch dinner and a show at Pirate’s Voyage, Dolly Parton’s Stampede or Hatfield & McCoy’s Dinner Feud before tucking your family in for the night at one of the numerous cabins, resorts or campgrounds in the area.

Nearby Gatlinburg is perfect for couples, young adults and those looking for breweries, nightlife and shopping with an alpine feel. Still want to go swimming in the fall? Gatlinburg is also home to Wild Bear Falls Water Park which is an astonishing indoor waterpark with an interactive treehouse, lazy river and retractable roof. Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery draws in the crowds while Crockett’s Breakfast Camp serves top notch breakfast to early risers. Brave the Gatlinburg SkyPark or Anakeesta Adventure Park for panoramic views, and shop for outdoor gear at NOC Gatlinburg.

Caregiving:

Taking Care of Yourself While Caring For Someone Else

In 2014, I began a new job that would have a profound impact on my life. As the new coordinator of a memory counseling program at a local hospital, I soon developed relationships with many caregivers – usually a husband or wife caring for their spouse or an adult child caring for a parent with some type of dementia. As I interacted with these caregivers one-on-one in the office, on the phone and in support groups, I developed great empathy and a profound respect for those engaged in the labor of love we call caregiving. I’ve come to regard caregiving as one of the most difficult – and most important – jobs in the world. And, that’s true whether the cared for person has dementia, a long-term condition such as Parkinson’s disease or is recovering from an accident or surgery.

Caregiving has been described as a journey. It’s not the “traveling-fromone-place-to-another” kind of journey. It’s a journey of compassion, walking alongside someone coping with illness or disability or the effects of aging. But, caregiving is never just about the person needing care. No matter whom a person is caring for, or why, or for how long, the caregiving journey is always also about the caregiver. And while most caregivers do a spectacular job of taking care of their loved one, far too many don’t do nearly as good a job of taking care of themselves. Well meaning caregivers sometimes sacrifice their own physical, emotional, social and other needs, so they can pour all their energy and time into taking care of their loved one. While that sounds noble and loving, it’s really not. It actually puts the cared-for person at risk.

In my book, I challenge caregivers to rethink the importance of self-care, telling them:

Here’s the truth. If you ignore your own needs for restful sleep, healthy food, exercise, medical care, spiritual nurture and “time off,” sooner or later, you will be unable to go on meeting the needs of the person in your care. Unless you make caring for yourself a top priority, you may burn out or bail out. And, where would that leave the person you’re caring for?

When caregivers make their own well being a priority, they have more endurance to meet the challenges of caregiving. Being well rested and healthy helps keep their emotional and physical reserves from running out. It enables them to be the patient, loving and truly caring caregiver they want to be. But, sometimes caregivers think: “The needs of the person I’m caring for are so much greater than mine! How can I possibly put my needs ahead of theirs?” If that’s how they’re thinking, taking care of themselves feels selfish.

So, one goal of this faith-based mini-book is to convince caregivers that tending to their own health and well being actually helps protect that person they care for. To say that another way, caregivers need to prioritize their own self-care so that they can keep on taking good care of the other person.

Do you know a caregiver who feels that self-care is “selfish?” If so, I hope you will share this message with them – self-care isn’t selfish at all; it’s an investment that will be repaid in a better quality of life for the caregiver and a better quality of care for their loved one. Self-care isn’t just smart – it’s necessary! That’s the key message of Caregiving: Taking Care of Yourself While Caring for Someone Else.

Caregiving is never just about the person needing care. No matter who a person is caring for, or why, or for how long, the caregiving journey is always also about the caregiver.

MS. SENIOR FORSYTH COUNTY

A Girl is Never Too Old for a Pageant

Many little girls grow up watching the Miss America and Miss USA pageants thinking “maybe one day that could be me.” There’s something about the excitement that surrounds a pageant and, this year, the Ms. Senior Forsyth County pageant was held on August 3rd with six contestants and an audience packed with supporters, bringing a national pageant to our area, showing a “girl” is never too old for a pageant!

Celebrating the “Age of Elegance”

In 1972, the first “Ms. Senior Citizen” pageant was held for senior women. By 1981, the pageant went nationwide, and the name was changed to Ms. Senior America by the founder of the event, Dr. Al Mott. This is the world’s first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the “Age of Elegance.”

The pageant is a search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans.

Linda Anthony, Ms. North Carolina 2013, and a codirector of the Forsyth County pageant said, “The philosophy of the pageant is based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America and our most valuable treasure. It is because of their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better society. Today, we have about 25 states that hold pageants and, in North Carolina, we now have seven counties with pageants including Alamance, Davidson, Davie, Guilford, Randolph and Rockingham. This year’s pageant is completely new for Forsyth County. We have three co-directors for Ms. Senior Forsyth County Pageant – Sarah Daffron, Ms. North Carolina Senior

America 2010, Jennifer Tuttle Gentle, Ms. North Carolina Senior America 2023 and me.”

Contestants were judged in four categories – Interview, Evening Gown, “I Believe” Statement and Talent and ranged in age from 65 to 89. The pageant had six contestants – Ronee Walker, Ruby Cain, Joanne Goetz and Karen Patterson, all from Winston-Salem, NC and Barbara Geer and Sandra Smothers from Kernersville, NC.

A Time of Celebration

The six contestants and 150 guests gathered at Mt. Carmel Church in Winston-Salem, NC for the pageant.

“Mayor Allen Joines greeted our audience, and Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough addressed the guests. We were thrilled with the turnout for this pageant and the contestants we had. Our winner was Sandra Smothers, and our first runner up was Karen Patterson. Sandra is ready to promote Senior America throughout Forsyth County and our state. She will also be entering the Ms. North Carolina Senior America Pageant in Pinehurst, NC on May 10, 2025. Sandra will make public appearances at county events and showcases. She will participate at events of sponsoring agencies upon their request and continue to share the importance that seniors have in our community,” commented Linda.

What’s the Difference? Plant Forward Vegetarian Vegan

Plant based eating has gained significant popularity, with various diets emphasizing different levels of plant consumption.Among the most popular are plant forward, vegetarian and vegan diets. While these diets share a common focus on plant foods, they differ significantly in their guidelines and restrictions. Understanding these differences can help you make informed choices about your dietary preferences and nutritional needs.

PLANT-FORWARD DIET

Are you curious about consuming a more plant-based diet but do not want to cut out animal foods completely? A plant-forward diet is a diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes but does not necessarily eliminate animal based foods. By following one of these diets, you may benefit from a decrease in the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and many cancers. Some meats are high in saturated fat which can lead to poor heart health. Processed meats like deli meat, bacon and sausage are usually high in sodium and can increase blood pressure. A well balanced vegan, vegetarian or plant forward diet can offer numerous health benefits, including a lower risk of chronic diseases, better weight management and improved digestion. By emphasizing whole, unprocessed foods, these diets can be both nutritious and delicious, supporting overall well being and environmental sustainability.

As interest in plant based eating continues to grow, understanding the differences between plant forward, vegetarian and vegan diets is crucial for making informed dietary choices. Discovering Local Gluten-Free Baked Goods

Ever since my junior year of high school, I have eaten gluten-free.

After taking a food sensitivity test, I found that gluten ranked high on the foods that I am sensitive to. Since I am sensitive to gluten, I am always excited to find gluten-free baked goods at local coffee shops and bakeries. There are many wonderful, local coffee shops and bakeries that have gluten-free baked goods options in the Clemmons, Winston-Salem and Bermuda Run areas. Below, I am going to share my favorite bakery shops that have gluten-free food options to enjoy. I do want to preface this article by saying that I am sensitive to gluten, not allergic to gluten. If you are allergic to gluten, asking any food places about their cross-contamination risks is important.

BE KIND COFFEE CO. (CLEMMONS)

Be Kind Coffee Co. is a great local coffee shop to go to. I love getting their delicious iced coffee along with a gluten-free muffin. Be Kind usually has a gluten-free blueberry muffin and either a gluten-free pecan bar or lemon bar. My favorite gluten-free treat at Be Kind is their delicious gluten-free blueberry muffin. Additionally, Be Kind has a good room towards the back of the shop where you can sit as well as plenty of outdoor seating in front of the shop.

CAMINO BAKERY (WINSTON-SALEM)

Camino Bakery is a great spot to find delicious coffee and gluten-free baked goods. Camino has two locations in Winston-Salem. There is a Camino Bakery located downtown on 4th Street and a location in the Brookstown area. There are many different gluten-free treats to choose from at Camino. Camino offers gluten-free cookies, brownies, muffins and scones. One of my favorite treats here is their gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. When you go to Camino, you will be able to find a delicious gluten-free treat in their case. Also, Camino has both indoor and outdoor seating where you can enjoy your coffee and baked goods.

LOUIE AND HONEY’S KITCHEN (WINSTON-SALEM)

Louie and Honey’s Kitchen is a newer bakery that is located in the West End area. Louie and Honey is a great spot to find delicious coffee and homemade baked goods. There are a few gluten-free options that are offered at this bakery. You can find a gluten-free flourless chocolate cake and peanut butter energy balls here. Sometimes Louie and Honey’s Kitchen will make gluten-free monster cookies and chocolate cookies that are delicious. There is nice indoor seating here in addition to outdoor seating in front of the bakery and on their back patio.

MADDIE CAKES (BERMUDA RUN)

Maddie Cakes is a great bakery located in the Bermuda Run area within Davie County. This bakery offers many delicious gluten-free options as well as coffee. At Maddie Cakes, you can find gluten-free brownies, cupcakes, energy balls, granola bars and cakes. On their counter, you can find gluten-free brownies, energy bars and granola bars. You have to ask for gluten-free cupcakes as they are kept in the back. Maddie Cakes offers a few flavors of gluten-free cupcakes, and you can choose what icing you would like for them to put on the cupcake for you. I love the gluten-free chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing. If you are having a birthday or special occasion, you can order a gluten-free cake which I have done a few times. There are also a few flavors to choose from for the gluten-free cakes that you can ask about. Maddie Cakes does have plenty of seating inside and a few tables outside, as well.

If you live in the Clemmons, Winston-Salem or Bermuda Run area and are gluten-free, I would highly recommend that you visit these local coffee shops and bakeries. All of these places offer delicious gluten-free baked goods and are also great places to pick up a coffee. I hope that this article will help anyone sensitive to gluten enjoy delicious treats and coffee at these wonderful local bakeries.

There’s a lot of business advice to dive into that can come with many distractions. From studying analytics to strategizing revenue growth, getting wrapped up in the technical side of growing a business is very easy. However, it’s important to remember that God granted your business ideas and the capacity to keep them running. You aren’t in business solely to make money but also to impact the lives connected to your business.

In most business workshops, you are encouraged to create a vision statement. As you pursue entrepreneurship, you will realize how important the vision is. It’s usually a couple of sentences at most, but your vision statement is something you can refer back to when making pivotal decisions to stay aligned. Have you created your vision statement? When was the last time you looked at it? Do you still believe in it?

Usually, your vision statement involves the people whose lives you want to change

forever. The vision can seem unattainable, however, it’s healthy to strive to move mountains (Matthew 17:20) because it gives you something to believe in and bring God into. Your vision statement is your chance to dream big, so ask yourself, “How would my business create a perfect world?” I started a business of creating jewelry because I love helping others transform a simple outfit into a styled ensemble they feel regal in. As someone who struggled with peers not understanding and making fun of some of my outfit choices, I strive to help women and girls never feel like they cannot express themselves.

Chances are you know a specific group of people who need what you sell. I want you to fall in love with them, just like God fell in love with us and commit to helping them succeed. No matter what, do not stray from your vision of a perfect world. Realistically, perfection is reserved for God

and our heavenly bodies (Philippians 3:21), but how fulfilled would you be if you left this world better than you found it?

To help with crafting a powerful vision statement, think about these steps:

The end result for your customer: What will make them say, “I’ve accomplished this goal with the help of [your business]?”

The finish line for your business: If you decided never to make another product or provide your service again because so many customers have accomplished their goals through your business, how would you expect the world to behave going forward?

Set aside focused time to create or revisit your vision statement. Money comes and goes, but the vision permeates the atmosphere forever. Let’s build the world we want to live in. I have faith in you.

GETTING OLDER? Keep A Positive Attitude

Just the other day, I had a moment when the physical reality of aging lodged in my head and messed with my attitude. I hate when one negative thought takes off, growing into an entire field of weeds in my mind.

It all started with a jar of pickles. After several fruitless attempts to remove the lid with my right hand, then my left, I brought out the heavy artillery – first a spoon, bang, bang. Nothing. Then a knife to pry under the seam – easy does it. Nope, it wasn’t budging. That’s when I woke my dear man up from his nap (yes, I did!) and asked if he could wrangle the top off. He, too, struggled but finally succeeded.

Initially, I believed it was the hardest thing either of us accomplished that day. But, I was wrong. The much harder “thing” was grappling with that field of weeds – the flood of negative thoughts about aging –that this tiny incident managed to incite in my brain.

Come on, Jean Marie, you know full well that people with more positive attitudes about aging tend to live longer and healthier lives than those who harbor negative thoughts about getting old.

Of course, it wasn’t just the neuropathy in my hands, or the hernia I’ve yet to deal with, or the...well, never mind; you get the picture. It was about seeing myself as an ever-expanding compendium of age-related troubles and losses. That’s what was getting to me. To shift my “stinkin’ thinkin’” I brought to mind:

My mom who lived to 88 with full throttle joy despite her many, many challenges.

My same age and quite a bit older friends who continue to run businesses, traveI abroad, write books and participate in senior triathlons – just to name a few of their adventures.

I suspect that every one of us will look in the mirror, take a fall or receive a diagnosis that sparks the fuel of negativity about our process of aging. Just as the dang pickle jar incident did for me, which is precisely why we need to be prepared when it does. Thinking about people who are aging with a positive attitude as their True North is my place to start. Beyond that, what works for me is:

Reviewing the chapters of my life through a handy pair of rose-colored glasses. I am very much a realist, so when those negative thoughts about aging creep in, I pivot to the many joys that have accompanied me at every stage in my life journey.

I also challenge myself to authentically appreciate who I am right now. No, the stomach is no longer ironing board flat, but dang if I can’t kill a Pilates workout three mornings a week! Gratitude for what I have weathered, what I can do and who I am now, helps me to like, even to love the current me.

Based on his extensive research on perceptions of aging and their impact on well-being, Colorado State University Professor Dr. Manfred Diehl offers a variety of ways to adopt a more positive attitude toward your own aging process. I’ve summarized his suggestions here:

Stay physically active – at least 30 minutes of movement or exercise every day is ideal.

Engage your brain in mentally challenging activities, and never stop learning new things.

Adopt a lifestyle focused on healthy eating, getting enough sleep, managing weight and not drinking in excess or smoking.

Stay connected to other people by nurturing relationships with your partner, family, friends, neighbors and others in the community, including young people

Create positive emotions for yourself and learn to feel good about your age.

Accept what you cannot do and ask for help when needed. Don’t sweat the small stuff, like stuck pickle jars.

Set goals for yourself, and take control of the steps needed to achieve them.

Minimize stress! Practice healthy coping techniques and learn to relax and unwind.

Have regular medical check-ups, take advantage of health screenings and engage in healthy preventive behaviors.

I won’t allow a field of weeds to take over my healthy, positive attitude about aging. I hope that you won’t either.

Self-Compassion

Mastering Inner Kindness :

Someone once said to me: “Pure kindness pays off…being kind is a way to make our own lives, and the lives of others, more meaningful.”

Indeed. Kindness makes an impact on the giver and the receiver, reinforcing a quality that is its own reward. You may say “It’s just what I do, and how I am. I’m there for people if they need me.” Yes, it is how most of us think of kindness.

SELF-COMPASSION: KINDNESS TURNED INWARD

The other side to kindness – the one that researchers say may make us more resilient and more happy – is called “self-compassion,” the practice of turning kindness inward by being comforting and supportive of yourself. This practice allows you to hold yourself accountable in positive and productive ways, instead of beating yourself up mercilessly and getting stuck. Dr. Kristin Neff from the University of Texas at Austin explains: “With self-compassion, if you care about yourself, you do what’s healthy for you rather than what’s harmful to you...the biggest reason people aren’t more self-compassionate is that they are afraid they’ll become self-indulgent…they believe selfcriticism is what keeps them in line. Most people have gotten it wrong because our culture says being hard on yourself is the way to be.”

HARMFUL HABITS OF MIND

We know what “harmful” sounds like in our own heads – your significant other says that he needs a time out, and you think “I’m a loser.” You lock yourself out of your car, and you say to yourself “you idiot!” Negative internal feedback tends to be habitual, and it does nothing to enhance your coping abilities or your happiness. It doesn’t contribute anything.

But, turning kindness inward does.

Some researchers consider self-compassion a form of self-coaching: “It’s far more important to be kind to yourself than it is to have high self-esteem,” concludes Duke University’s Dr. Mark Leary.

DEVELOP SELF-COMPASSION

Dr. Neff’s research indicated that people who are really compassionate to others tend to be hard on themselves. Even if you are a person who tends to focus on the clouds passing by instead of the sun peeking through, you can develop your capacity for self-compassion. There are things that you can’t change, such as a genetic predisposition to gloominess or the difficult experiences that may have contributed to your outlook. But, you can always change your interpretation and the perspective that you carry forward.

As Dr. Leary reminds us: “When bad things happen to a friend, you wouldn’t yell at him.”

That made me pause, and so I asked myself: “If I consistently treated myself as my own best friend, particularly when I stumble, how would I demonstrate self-compassion?”

Well, I would:

• Respect who I am – strengths, weaknesses, blind spots and idiosyncrasies alike.

• Encourage myself by focusing on my accomplishments, strengths and gifts.

• Resolve to learn from my mistakes and continue to grow.

• Forgive myself and move on with more joy and less worry.

That’s what self-compassion looks and sounds like for me – which leads me to think that developing the habit of selfcompassion is a wake-up call with a significant, positive payoff.

TEN TIPS FOR NURTURING SELF-COMPASSION

Learning to turn kindness inward may take some practice, so consider how these tips can help you pivot inward with self-compassion:

1. Get serious about your own well-being.

2. Hold yourself to a high standard of self-respect.

3. Help yourself or get help when you need it – you matter.

4. Recognize when you are feeling sad, angry or upset.

5. Listen to yourself with compassion; don’t be so quick to pass a negative judgment.

6. Monitor what you say to yourself – check that tendency to beat yourself up.

7. Be patient with yourself when you make a mistake…so that you can get over it and move on.

8. Give yourself time to be with your thoughts and feelings.

9. Forgive yourself, period.

10. Give yourself a hug, rock or stretch. Crazy, I know, but physical movement helps to alleviate stress and calm emotion.

Self-compassion brings kindness full circle. It is a remarkable tour de force that builds resilience, happiness and a more positive life experience. I’m on my way. I hope that you are, too.

Engaging Our Older Loved Ones in Personal Storytelling

My mom lived in a nursing home the last eight years of her life. As Alzheimer’s creeped in, my sister had a brilliant idea: “Let me buy Mom a set of notebooks where she can capture her memories and tell the story of her life.” We were excited about the prospect of her telling her story in her way and looked forward to those inevitable “I didn’t know that” or “Well, who knew?” moments of our own.

In our mom’s case, it wasn’t to be as her condition had already impeded her clarity as well as her ability to focus. The opportunity was forever lost.

How many times have you thought “I wish I had asked Dad that before he passed” or “Aunt Harriet would have known that piece of the puzzle, but it didn’t occur to me to ask her”? It is rarely nosiness that prompts our curiosity. Most of us have a genuine interest in knowing our loved ones more fully and from their perspective. In doing so, we also satisfy an innate desire to better understand ourselves and our history.

It’s not surprising that older people derive a number of benefits from telling their stories. These include:

• Preserving their sense of identity

• Improving their memory and cognition

• Reducing their emotional isolation and loneliness

• Developing a deeper connection with loved ones

The research also points to the priceless sharing of values, life experience and wisdom that these stories offer the listener – you and me.

SPARK A STORY

What are we waiting for? If Uncle Arthur tends to sit quietly by himself at your family gatherings or instead bombards you with questions about your active, busy life, you may want to consider how to draw him out by tapping into his stories. And, here’s the thing, you don’t need to ask about his whole life story. Most people would feel overwhelmed and respond with “Gosh, where do I start?” Or “Oh, you don’t want to hear all of that!” So, be creative, consider what you know about “Uncle Arthur” and spark a story by asking:

• How did you and Aunt Margie meet?

• How did you know that she was the one?

• What’s one lesson your parents taught you?

• Who were your favorite relatives growing up?

• What was your neighborhood like growing up?

• Who was the biggest influence on you as a kid?

• What’s the most mischievous thing you did as a kid?

• How did you decide on a career in...? OR What was it like being a homemaker back then?

• What’s your favorite holiday memory?

• What are your favorite holiday foods?

• What is one thing you wish you knew how to cook?

• What is the kindest thing anyone has done for you?

• If you could have dinner with one person, past or present, who would it be?

• What’s one thing you really admire about young people today?

• What’s one thing you’d like to understand about young people today?

• What is the most amazing piece of technology to you?

• What have you been doing for fun lately?

By now, you get the idea. I promise you’ll be amazed by how much better you will know and understand your loved one –and maybe even yourself. As you pursue conversations like these, be sure to:

• Express genuine interest in them and their stories. Use this moment as an opportunity to slow down, and to be in the moment, fully engaged.

• Ask open questions and follow up “why” questions to keep the conversation going.

Oh, and don’t be surprised if “Uncle Arthur” seeks you out at the next family gathering!

How to Create High Value + Shareable Content

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

There are few things more frustrating in marketing than spending time on creating content only for it to fall flat. You create it, you post it and you’re greeted with the figurative sound of crickets chirping. Your brand deserves more, and refreshing your content strategy can be the bridge that gets you there!

This month, I’m sharing tips on how to not only capture your audience’s attention but inspire them to share it with their own followers and friends to help amplify your visibility and impact, as well!

IDENTIFY:

FOCUS ON YOUR UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION

The kind of high value content your audience is going to enjoy consuming and sharing provides solutions, educates, entertains and/or inspires them. From your social media posts to your marketing emails and everything in between, your content should offer something unique to your brand and its authority and personality. What actionable tips or expert insights can you provide? Are there entertaining stories that feel aligned with your brand? What exclusive offers and incentives do you have to share?

Consider what sets your brand apart; ask yourself how you can leverage that uniqueness to deliver value. For instance, if you’re a women’s accessory designer, what kind of unique personal styling advice can you share with your audience?

RECOGNIZE: CATER TO YOUR AUDIENCE

The deeper you understand your ideal audience, the stronger your foundation is for creating content. Ignore for a moment who your current followers and subscribers are and think about who you really want and need as customers. Do these two audiences match up? If not, you’ll need to start pivoting your content more towards who you’re actually needing to attract.

Regardless, it’s always helpful to conduct customer research to hone in on buying habits, preferences, pain points, goals, interests, turn offs, etc. Create surveys and polls for your audience to gather insights, and use the data to guide your content strategy. You want to build content pieces that position your brand, truly speaking to their needs and aligning with their values and interests.

ENCOURAGE: FOSTER ENGAGEMENT + INTERACTIVITY

If you’re seeking more views and visibility overall, encourage your audience to actively participate with your content! Utilize your call-toaction (CTA) within your posts and stories on social media by asking

questions, soliciting opinions, inviting them to give feedback or asking them to share or save content. Include intention sharing of user-generated content such as reviews and user-submitted photos and videos which can increase the likelihood of resharing. Lean into trending audios or reels/TikTok content ideas when it feels aligned as these become more digestible for viewers, as well. Remember to keep social media a social place! Prioritize responding to comments and direct messages to strengthen brand relationships and ongoing interactions.

ANALYZE: LEAN INTO WHAT’S WORKING

It’s important not to concentrate on what’s going wrong but lean into what’s going right! Monitor the performance of your content through built-in analytics tools to see what’s receiving the most engagement and who is engaging. When you track metrics, you can understand what resonates best with your audience and if you’re reaching current followers or non followers or subscribers. Give strategies time to work instead of switching things up too often. This will help you identify your content strengths! At the same time, it will allow you to improve and experiment to see what your audience finds the most valuable.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, review your current content and see which topics and styles are performing the best. Ask your audience what they want to see through surveys or polls, and decide where there’s an opportunity to educate, entertain or evoke emotion as a brand.

Volunteering at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Ronald McDonald House Charities Piedmont Triad and Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center

If you spent your career teaching and serving others, how might you enjoy your time in retirement? Sleep late, relax and bask in the fruits of your labors knowing you have positively impacted many lives? Some might, and it would certainly be a well-deserved right to choose to do so, however, that is not what Barbara Carmody, my amazing mother-in-law, did in her retirement.

When Barbara first retired, she traveled a bit, but she also became involved in volunteering at church and in her grandson’s school. In 2021, at age 78, she moved to Winston-Salem to be near her family who had relocated. She immediately began seeking ways to be involved in the Forsyth community.

One of Barbara’s first volunteering experiences was at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center where she acquired more than 88 volunteer hours working alongside her friends to comfort mothers on bed rest or with premature babies. Barbara then spearheaded an effort to reestablish a volunteer program between the residents of her retirement community, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist (AHWFB), and Ronald McDonald House Charities Piedmont Triad

In Memoriam Barbara Carmody

(RMHCPT), activities which the pandemic had halted entirely. Barbara taught the residents of her retirement community how to crochet and knit baby hats, planned craft activities and organized her community’s library.

Along with representatives of the Ronald McDonald House, Barbara coordinated monthly and seasonal crafts and activities to help parents and family members stay busy while waiting in the NICU for their little ones. Barbara contributed more than 225 volunteer hours to the Brenner Family Room. Furthermore, she and her troop of friends made quilts, dolls, teddy bears, door decorations and baskets to bring cheer and comfort to those waiting in the pediatric cancer center at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Brenner Children’s Hospital.

In May of this year, Barbara’s health suddenly declined, and she passed away within just a week or so of volunteering. Her passing and missing presence is not only felt by her family but also by her friends and the hospital communities she so enjoyed helping. Barbara’s family believes her volunteering was deeply important to her longevity because it gave her a new purpose while also keeping her active and focused on others. Reiko Roope, Hospitality Services Coordinator with RMHCPT stated, “Ms. Barbara was the embodiment of dedication and compassion. She genuinely cared for our cause of helping families with sick children. Her contributions have left a lasting impact, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.” Reiko fondly recalled how Barbara’s face would light up with joy as she handed out baby hats and visited with families.

If you have never considered volunteering before, please do. No matter your age, you can make a difference and find personal fulfillment as Barbara did. There are many ways you can get involved at local hospitals and with RMHCPT.

RMHCPT offers the following avenues for volunteering – assisting families with hospitalized children by greeting guests, monitoring check-ins and keeping the kitchen stocked at the Brenner, Cone or Forsyth Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. Back at the House, one can help with sorting donations, assisting families and performing clerical work. If you have more time to commit, Family Support Volunteers play a vital role by facilitating Bingo on Monday nights and hosting crafts, special events and holiday celebrations. Due to its size, AHWFB needs ambassadors to show patients and guests around the hospital and help them navigate the large facility.

In 1989, the Bethesda Center opened to serve and improve the lives of the homeless in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and beyond by providing shelter and housing along with stabilization services and case management.

The facility is a 365-days-a-year day shelter, night shelter and emergency night shelter, equipped to house up to 100 men and women each night, expanding when needed to accommodate and turn no one away. The task of serving the homeless is an outreach that only happens when people step up and support the Bethesda Center with financial help and donations. Currently, the Bethesda Center is experiencing a strain in finances, leading to shortened hours and services. In order to encourage donations, the interim executive director of the Bethesda Center and associate pastor of Agape Faith Church, Chris Leab, is addressing the misconceptions of the homeless and how giving someone a hand up can make all the difference for his or her future.

THE MISCONCEPTIONS OF BEING HOMELESS

In his role as the interim executive director, Chris Leab often hears of the misunderstandings people have of homeless individuals.

“There is so much misconception about the homeless community. Many think the homeless are just lazy people with drug problems. Yes, we deal with substance abuse, but many of our residents are very humble, sweet, older people, who have had a number of things happen to them in life that have left them in transition. We have seen a number of people lose their homes because of landlords increasing rents beyond what they can pay, so they are forced to move out without having anywhere else to go. In actuality, these could be our moms and dads, our brothers and sisters. The truth is, these individuals don’t want to be in their situations. Many have given up hope, but let me tell you, we have a staff that absolutely loves our residents. That’s why it’s been so difficult to cut our day shelter hours. We worry about our residents, especially the vulnerable ones. Because of the misconceptions, people don’t always give to support the homeless,” said Chris.

Funding for the Bethesda Center is at a critical need and, in order to maintain quality services, the Bethesda Center needs community support which has been a cornerstone of the facility.

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND IN OUR COMMUNITY

The Bethesda Center has served for the past 35 years as a life changing lifeline, offering not only shelter, but laundry facilities, computer and internet, permanent housing, family reunification, mental and physical health care, along with case management to assist in those reentering the workforce, as well.

Helping the homeless to have a different perspective on their situation also comes with the services provided by the Bethesda Center. Sometimes, just knowing there is someone cheering you on and helping you to look for a job and believe that better days are ahead makes all the difference.

“Our caseworkers are often instrumental in getting our residents back into the workforce. This is a service that has made an impact on many, and we hope to expand this service in the future. Currently, the case management program at the Bethesda Center meets each individual where he or she is because everyone has different experiences and needs. The caseworkers provide homeless individuals with guidance in understanding the barriers that prevent their ability to live on their own. We are dedicated to not only providing immediate shelter, but also fostering long term health and self sufficiency, both are necessary for our residents,” Chris commented.

MOVING FORWARD WITH A MISSION

In order to continue with the mission of assisting homeless individuals, the Bethesda Center needs funds and accepts donations of supplies.

“We would love for people to become monthly partners with $25, $50 or $100 a month which will go a long way to help our most vulnerable. This is very helpful with our current budget needs. Right now, our budget is a little more than a million dollars a year, but we would need to increase that to keep up with rising costs and needed improvements. People can also donate in other ways with prepared food as we try and provide something for our guests to eat, toiletries and washing powders. There is a list of needs on our website which can be purchased through the Bethesda Amazon wishlist,” stated Chris.

The Importance of Shoes

Back in the day (1940s-1950s), there was a common saying that “shoes make the man.” To expand on that, and at the same time be the good feminist that I am, I would add they “make the woman” as well. Clearly, the adage underscored the fact that shoes were about fashion, and the right pair could make or break one’s outfit but, even more interestingly, that shoes conveyed character. In the past, and in a studiously class-ridden English society, a man was normally judged by his shoes. An excerpt from the “Intellectual Takeout” website from June 2024 notes that “Conservative lace-ups neatly shined indicated that you were from a good home, were sent to a good school. The shining of shoes was the shining of one’s character. Polishing your shoes was a way to polish your manners. Ship-shape shoes meant a ship-shape life – neat and clean with everything done and dusted, decently and in order.” Although we Americans are normally not the sartorial snobs that our brethren across the pond were, the importance of shoes is not lost to us either as a necessary nicety or an expression of personality.

Although shoes are about fashion, perhaps even more importantly, they are about function.

As any podiatrist will tell you (and mine has), your feet are your body’s foundation. Wearing good shoes can help you feel your best and prevent injuries. They serve as a protection from disease, injury and the natural elements. In many areas of the world, where sanitation is poor and disease is widespread, going without shoes makes one especially susceptible to parasitic worms and other foot infections. Those diseases can not only be debilitating but in fact lethal. Wearing the right shoes enables you to move well and offer comfort with proper support and cushioning. Furthermore, appropriate footwear can also obviate conditions such as calluses, bunions and plantar fasciitis.

As an admitted shoe “junkie” (hello, Imelda Marcos!), I can attest to a philosophy that says “the more shoes the better.” I’m all for having fun with them – wearing sandals with rhinestone baubles, fur-lined knee-high leather boots with a nod to the Harley Davidson motorcycle crowd, spongy plastic gummy shoes in bright turquoise or rubber flip-flops in the dead of winter. When I’m feeling playful, I can also tweak the prophet’s words from “How beautiful on the

mountains are the feet of those who bring good news” to “those who wear good shoes” – a pair of Nikes, brogues or Oxfords. (Seems that there can even be sermons in shoes.) But, I particularly delight in how shoes, which are not only a choice of life and a summary of purpose, perform beautifully in so many lines of work. A runner has his or her shoes that clasp the earth with their cleats, a factory worker’s steel-toed shoes (protect your feet from hard impacts), patent leathers are great for a summer ball and the new Skechers tennis shoes allow you to simply step right in without any assistance from one’s hands. There are running shoes to run and dancing shoes to dance. I even learned recently about “elevator shoes” which can make you look taller with their height-increasing lifts and insoles. At 5”2’, I’m giving some thought to those since my neighbor yelled out to me “hello, short-shop!”

Footwear clearly serves as a powerful symbol of identity and status in many cultures, reflecting the unique values and traditions of different societies. Distinctive shoes can tell stories, communicate messages and even provide insight into the wearer’s social standing or regional origins. In ancient Egypt, for example, shoes were so esteemed that they were considered a status symbol. The higher the heel, the more prestigious the wearer. Shoes are quite simply a way of expressing your personality. An English musical, “Kinky Boots” focused on exactly that. The musical tells the story of Charlie Prince who inherits a shoe factory from his father. Although the shoes were good quality men’s shoes, they were not particularly stylish. Inspired by a male friend who is a drag queen, Charlie successfully reinvents his business by producing a line of high-heeled fetish footwear for men. The lyrics in one of the songs say, “You might think beauty comes in spring and sparrow/When the sun rises, it’s the morning dew/But if you walk the straight and narrow/You’ll find the elegance and comfort is…the most beautiful thing in the world… a shoe!” As someone who paid $479.95 for a pair of Tony Lama Searcy 11” full quill ostrich boots, I simply say “here, here!”

Marilyn Monroe once said “give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” The importance of shoes – nothing less than a perfect marriage of function and fashion. I will always love my riding boots.

Taking Care of Older People We Love

There will come a time for many people when elderly loved ones will need extra care. While the adjustment may be stressful for you, it’s also important to remember that it is not easy for your loved one to become dependent on you or others for his or her care. Most important is to ensure loved ones are treated with respect, love and patience.

As a caregiver, take time to prepare for emergencies. Make a list of doctors and other healthcare team members. Write down medicines, past surgeries, insurance information and other important medical details. Talk with your loved ones about their preferences for housing and long term care. Discuss living wills and other legal documents that outline their wishes if, at some point, they cannot communicate.

Here are some more ways to care for the older people we love:

KEEP THEM ACTIVE AND INVOLVED

Exercise can keep elderly loved ones healthy and can even reduce their risk of falling. It is not unusual for older individuals to become isolated, lonely or even suffer from depression, especially if they have lost their spouse. For this reason, it is important to keep them involved with their family and friends, or even seek out new connections.

VISIT OFTEN

Your loved one needs social interaction with you, and you need reassurance that he or she is doing well. You may want to check the overall cleanliness of the house or to see if anything is broken and needs to be fixed. Check the pantry to make sure there is enough food, and make sure he or she is collecting the mail.

HIRE HELP

There may be a need to hire a helper, aide or another type of older adult caretaker. This could be someone who helps with daily activities such as showering, errands or housekeeping.

ORGANIZE A SCHEDULE

If necessary, try to arrange a schedule among you and other family members to help your older loved one with things like doctor appointments, shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc. A schedule will not only help keep your life structured and organized, it will help your loved one know what’s on the agenda for the day, as well.

REVIEW MEDICATIONS

Be sure that your loved one has an adequate supply of medications. If there are multiple medications, buy a pill box organizer with compartments labeled with the days of the week as well as AM and PM doses. If a new medication is prescribed, ask the doctor or pharmacist about potential side effects or possible interactions with current medications.

TAKE CARE OF PAPERWORK

Make sure everything is up to date and complete when it comes to important paperwork. This may include discussing a will or deciding on power of attorney. These conversations can be challenging, but they are necessary in order for everyone to be prepared.

MAKE HOME MODIFICATIONS

Take a good look around to see what may be a safety hazard when taking care of elderly adults. Things like:

Checking the overall lighting in the house to make sure it is bright enough.

Installing a ramp for wheelchairs or walkers.

Installing handrails and grab bars at the toilet and shower.

Removing small rugs that could potentially cause stumbles or catch on walkers/canes.

Plugging in a few auto-sensor night lights throughout the home so they are able to see if they wake up at night.

Making sure cables, cords and wires are safely tucked away to prevent potential falls.

Removing extra clutter that is lying around or furniture that is in the way.

DISCUSS FINANCES

Your older loved one may be uncomfortable talking about his or her finances, but it’s still important to try to have open discussions about financial needs and expenses, especially if he or she lives on a fixed income or if there is a budget to adhere to.

WATCH FOR DRIVING ISSUES

There may come a time when your loved one is no longer able to drive due to declines in eyesight or reaction times. It is important to assess his or her driving abilities, and when it does become an issue, offer other options that may be helpful. For example, you might consider hiring a driver or using a delivery service for groceries.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

It is important to take care of yourself when taking care of older loved ones. Get away for a while and enjoy your life, as well. Although caregiving can be rewarding, caregivers often face challenges. If you need a break from caregiving or would like assistance, ask family members, other loved ones or resources in your community for help.

Katharine Rosenthal, RDN is a registered dietitian and food blogger for the Be Well Table blog. She created Be Well Table to share healthy recipes as well as nutrition and wellness tips with everyday women, especially moms. Katharine is dedicated to helping you get nourishing meals on the table in a short amount of time, making healthy eating accessible and enjoyable for busy families. Katharine’s journey began at Iowa State University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in dietetics in 2017. Since becoming a registered dietitian in 2018, she has gained extensive experience in both clinical nutrition and older adult nutrition. Leveraging her expertise, she launched Be Well Table to make nutritious eating accessible and enjoyable for all. Through her blog, she has collaborated with various local businesses and food brands across the United States, creating delicious recipes and spreading nutritional knowledge far and wide.

When she’s not busy crafting new recipes or working on her business, she loves to stay active through walking and strength training. A lover of relaxation as well, she enjoys unwinding with a good show. Katharine is also a dedicated mom, raising her two, almost three, boys to be adventurous and kind-spirited alongside her husband of eight years. She has a master’s degree in counseling and was recently invited to present on counseling trends at the Association for University Counseling Center Directors Conference in Phoenix. “I enjoy focusing on health and wellness with a holistic approach ,” said Stephanie. “I spend a lot of my time in the gym, moving outdoors, collaborating with other fitness professionals to promote wellness in our community and empowering all people to be confident in their bodies. I am passionate about focusing on wellness with an emphasis on empowering women at any age in any body type. I enjoy music, especially watching artists around the area and supporting their careers! I am incredibly close with my family and feel blessed to have them as a central source of support in my life.

Olivia Fonville is the founder of LIVV Social. She has a bachelor’s degree in strategic communications in public relations, marketing and advertising from High Point University. “I began working as a contractor for businesses during my senior year at HPU and, this past February, launched my own company so I could continue to help expand and promote my client’s messaging on digital platforms,” said Olivia. “My grandfather began his radio business in WinstonSalem and created a legacy. AA Summer Reflection

s a pair of house finches eagerly set up housekeeping in a new hanging fern, my dear man delivered his customary, gentle reminder: “You know that you have a history of interfering with mother nature.” As his words trailed off, I muttered “guilty as charged.”

It was true, especially since that “harmless” black snake consumed an entire brood in the exact same spot the previous year. No wonder I was on high alert!

This season, when that first tiny egg appeared in that fresh fern, I kicked into gear, peering in each morning while angling precipitously on my tippy toes.

“Now there are three!” I rushed in to announce. Then four, then five. The brood was now complete. I cooed to them, sequestered as they were in their shells and told them “it will be alright.” But, I knew from experience that it could be otherwise. Nature, the order of things. Sometimes it isn’t Snakes get hungry, too, I reasoned. That rational reminder didn’t stop me from standing guard as often as possible over “my” five little eggs. When a few days passed with no sign of the predator, I became keenly aware of my sense of gratitude. As I gently “rocked” the fern, I prayed that these five would safely hatch and have a go at this experience of being alive.

It was a rainy, slightly cool evening when I spotted the first born chick. Soon two, then three, now four and five furry little things as delicate in appearance as the fleeting dandelion. My prayer that they would come forth into this beautiful, uncertain world had been answered! Heedless of my dear man’s words, I leaned in again, now blew my warm breath in their direction and continued my prayerful vigilance. In my mind, we were building trust. Whenever their mom or dad saw me nearby, they would squawk, but seemed to settle down as they became accustomed to my persistent, harmless presence.

ready enough to embrace what they were born to do – take flight. The question of readiness was on me; with mixed emotions, I knew that my empty nest syndrome was about to begin.

As I went inside to attend to the everyday, little did I know that the timeless miracle was unfolding outside. When I returned to peer into the nest, all but one of my little birds had trusted their instinct and taken flight. Their lone remaining sibling fretted about the well worn nest, caught between the known and the unknown, the safety of staying put and the fear of taking flight. I moved in close to this little one and whispered “You can do it. You can. You can do it.” Only God can testify to the truth of this. Trusting that, I will tell you that a few moments thereafter, the lone bird hopped to the nest’s edge, looked out at the great unknown and, like a toddler taking its first steps, flapped its wings and took off. That little bird, the last one, trusted those new wings and made it about five yards to a scraggly old bush – then clumsily landed.

I’ll not forget that few-seconds’ journey anytime soon. Fear, flights and landings. Something we humans can relate to. It’s a familiar story; a miracle that never gets old.

How many times have you been talking to your bestie and said, “I wish I’d known that before…” followed by whatever information you wish you’d had at the time you started dating, got married, took a job, went through a divorce, etc? It’d be nice to have a second go round with the information and experience you have by the age of 40, but unfortunately, that’s not possible. But “are there some solid facts you can know and build your foundation on by the age of 40?” I am so glad you asked!

ARE THOSE WHO LEFT YOU REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?

I’m not sure why, but we tend to focus on those relationships that fell apart; those people who walked out on us are friends or significant others. We beat ourselves up dissecting why someone left us, was it our fault, could we have changed things? Maybe we should instead focus on those who stuck around; those who saw us at our worst and best and decided that we were worth the time and effort. Give those who gave you their time your time, and stop focusing on those who didn’t recognize your value. Never take those who have been by your side for granted.

even though we know we deserve better. I’m not saying to change sides and become a taker, because they are truly usually jerks to everyone; so just accept that your heart will be too big for a lot of people and you will get hurt.

KINDNESS ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST KILLER

GIVERS ARE USUALLY THE ONES WHO LOSE IN THE END

In my lifetime, I have seen and personally experienced that people with good hearts that are givers to others will almost always end up losing in life and love. Givers and those with good hearts tend to give more than they receive. We tend to forgive those who hurt us

I can’t tell you how many times in my life I have heard, “kill them with kindness.” My friend, it has almost never worked. When I laid on the kindness, I was usually hurt more and had more liberties taken with my good heart. Some people just don’t deserve your kindness; maybe try killing them with silence. Life is too short to spin your wheels with people who have it set in their mind that they are never going to like you, and

that’s on them not you. When you know you have reached the end of your “kindness rope,” move on! You will have peace through knowing you no longer have to spend time on them.

IT ALL COMBINES FOR A LIFE LIVED

For every experience you have in your life, the good and the bad, or not so good, each will combine to get you where you are supposed to be. Every win in life, loss along the way, those mistakes you wish you could change, will bring you full circle. Perfection will never be possible, but you can make changes and see success in life, personally and professionally. Work hard at those things in life that are worth the effort, those people who will never leave your side and learn to enjoy the ride of life and the beautiful journey that it can be when we keep the important things in focus.
