walkway MATERIALS
Are you thinking of creating a walkway to add elegance to your property? Here are five materials to consider.
1. Interlocking pavers.
Available in a variety of designs, interlocking pavers provide a contemporary look. They’re durable and require little maintenance unless the surface is particularly porous.
2. Natural stone.
Natural stone is robust and gives your yard a rustic look. Remember that the stone slabs must be carefully installed to ensure they lie flat and don’t create a tripping hazard.
3. Mulch.
Wood chips and bark are ideal for creating an organic-looking walkway. However, you must reapply the mulch yearly to maintain a neat look.
4. Crushed materials.
Crushed stone, concrete and brick are some of the most popular options. Make sure the size or shape of the aggregate isn’t too bulky, making it uncomfortable to walk on.
5. Wood planks.
A wooden walkway with closely spaced planks is esthetically pleasing. It’s also ideal for wheelchair accessibility.
Before installing your walkway, you must carefully prepare the surface. Remove a layer of turf, raise the middle slightly to facilitate rainwater runoff and apply the required underlay, like geotextile fabric, rock dust or sand.
For professional results, hire a local landscaping company to complete your walkway.
EMBELLISH YOUR YARD WITH STRIKING Conifers
Do you want to add plants to your yard to make it more attractive? Flowers are an obvious choice, but conifers can add striking contrast. Whether you choose standard size, bushy or dwarf, here are some of the advantages of planting evergreens:
• They shelter your home from cold winds, reducing your heating costs
• They attract pretty birds to nest or take refuge
• Many species can be pruned into elegant shapes like cubes, spheres and cones
• Unlike deciduous trees, which lose their foliage in winter, conifers retain their beautiful color and volume all year
• Planting several conifers together can increase privacy in your yard and block out sound
• Many types of conifers are edible and have medicinal properties
Cedars, spruces, false cypresses, junipers and pines — visit your local nursery to find the ideal conifers to enhance your landscaping.
Why fence off your land?
Whether you live in the suburbs, city or country, you have several reasons to consider putting a fence around your property. Here are a few.
• To create privacy.
If you live near a busy street or want to block your neighbor’s view of your backyard, a fence with solid panels will help keep prying eyes at bay.
• To enhance safety.
A suitable fence that’s impossible to climb limits access to your pool, keeping adventurous neighborhood children out of harm’s way.
• To enclose an animal play area.
A fence built high enough to match your pets’ jumping ability will give your little critters space to stretch their legs, without the risk of escaping.
• To provide a wind break.
Minimize the impacts of heavy winds by building a well-anchored fence with closely spaced posts and sufficient gaps to allow some air movement.
• To minimize nuisances.
A high, thick fence can reduce noise pollution, making your outdoor space more peaceful.
Do you want to install a fence on your property? Be sure to research local regulations, get the necessary permits and inform your neighbors of your plans.
CONSIDERATIONSGarden shed
Do you need storage space for your barbecue, patio set and gardening accessories? If so, it’s time to get a shed. There are many prefabricated models made of synthetic materials, metal and wood. Here are a few tips for making the right choice.
SYNTHETIC MATERIALS
Plastic, vinyl and PVC sheds are resistant to water and insect damage. Moreover, they require very little maintenance. Although available in a wide variety of designs, they tend to have a commercial look that may not suit everyone.
METAL
Metal sheds are lightweight, affordable and easy to assemble. If made from aluminum, the shed won’t rust. However, metal sheds are easy to dent and come in fewer designs than those made of synthetic materials.
WOOD
Wooden sheds are sturdy and can complement the outside of your home. However, they require considerable maintenance and are more vulnerable to insects and rot than metal and synthetic sheds.
If you’re handy, you can design and build your own shed. This way, you can choose its size and appearance. Furthermore, you can insulate the walls to create a workshop. But keep a close eye on your budget. This type of project can easily cost several thousand dollars.
Whether you choose to buy a prefabricated shed or build your own, make sure it’s strong enough to withstand inclement weather. Finally, check the laws and regulations in your municipality for building this type of structure.
