I can’t even put into words how rewarding this magazine experience has been. To have a hand not only in harvesting people’s enthusiasm but also being able to generate it is so exciting! It’s not just that zeb has sparked a new interest in our team, our Club, and our community, it’s that we are able to inspire people. Readers sent in letters and e-mail, Julia and I were approached at the Club Headquarters, on the street, even at the supermarket, by people telling us that they read the magazine, that they loved it and that they want to contribute. Thank you to all those people for their support! It is this feeling of comunita` that the magazine generates which makes this experience memorable. A special thank you to Valentina Karacic who rescued this issue of our magazine from the depths of file corruption.

Don’t forget: we are the first Juventus Club DOC to have an official Club magazine!

Wow, what a great experience zeb magazine has been so far! Our first issue garnered so much excitement among our staff, and among members of the Club and the Juventus community — we even uncovered some ―closet‖ juventini. It has been wonderful to read people’s comments, to hear their feedback, and to listen to ideas and suggestions inspired by people’s desire to become part of this magazine and its process. So thank you to everyone who embraced the idea of this publication, to those who had a hand in constructing this season’s magazine (both creatively and structurally), and to those who read our first issue and picked up this second one to see what’s new. It’s wonderful to know that the Juventus spirit is alive and thriving in Toronto!

Letters to the Editors Though I liked your magazine, I was surprised that there were no responses to what I perceive to be offensive comments to our Club and members, particularly from officials and fans of other teams, both here and in Italy. Your magazine gives you a unique forum in which to voice our displeasure at being treated so wrongly. Why did you not take this opportunity to respond? RL, Woodbridge Dear RL, Our reasons for publishing a magazine were to promote our Club and our team. While we welcome constructive criticism of teams, players, as well as our Club, it was never our intention to create a publication to be used as method

for attack on others. We are here to encourage people to see the beauty and feel passion in our sport. While we may write critically about soccer issues (games, tactics, player selection) which we may deem "incorrect" we will not attack others for their opinions. On a more practical level, we are all a part of a community and we have friends that are fans of others teams too and, while we do question their judgment, they deserve as much respect from us as we expect from them. I was looking at your contact information. Why are there so many different addresses for the Juve Club? CP, Ottawa Dear CP, Our Club has many functions, both ad-

ministrative and social. We have an address for the Club Headquarters (on Winges Rd.) which is where members can gather together to socialize and watch games. We have an administrative address (on Keswick Rd.) where official correspondence can be sent which, oftentimes, needs to be attended to in a timely manner. zeb magazine has a separate address (on Sonny St.) for the Magazine Committee to take care of magazine issues.

Getting to know you Joe Callipari I was only 12 years old when I became a Juventus fan in a seminary near Torino. Favourite Juventus Moment: There have been many, but my two favourite moments would be: 1) The semi-final of the European Cham-

pionship game in Torino, when Juventus triumphed 3-1 over Real Madrid, and 2) Rome during the 1995-96 season, when Juventus won1-0 over Ajax of Holland, and I was there with present Juventus Club Toronto members J. Rondinelli, D. Mescia, and G. Dicola. Great unforgettable moments. Forza Juve!

My name is Tania Di Berardino and was born in Black & White colours! I love Juventus and watch the games all the time. Favourite Juventus Moment: being on Juventus turf and being on the actual field where practices are held. Being on the set of Juventus channel with Valeria Ciardiello was so exciting!

This year, instead of pulling in a host of players to try and build up, Juventus has decided to purchase a few key, high-caliber players that are certain to bring their expertise to the game. Given the strength that our team is displaying at this point, it seems like this tactic was right on the ball (no pun intended). We at zeb want to highlight the players that made this summer transfer and who promise to bring us hope and, with any luck, a few trophies

IN BRIEF: BOUGHT Diego (c. Werder Brema) Fabio Cannavaro (d. Real Madrid) Martin Caceres (d. Barcelona) Felipe Melo (c. Fiorentina) Fabio Grosso (d. Monaco) SOLD Olof Mellberg (d. Olympiacos) Pavel Nedved (c. Svincolato) Dario Knezevic (d. Livorno) Albin Ekdal (c. Siena) Marco Marchionni (c. Fiorentina) Cristiano Zanetti (c. Fiorentina) Silva Falque Yago (c. Bari)

Diego Ribas da Cunha started out impressing club teams in his native Brazil, signing for Santos at the age of 12. He's come a long way since then, even receiving calls to the

Brazilian National Team in 2004. It was when he began playing for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga in 2006 that he really began to catch the eye of the international public. The "attacking midfielder" has demonstrated his exceptional passing skills, brilliant technical ability and inventive plays. When he is on the field, his passion is always evident. After signing for Juventus this summer, La Gazzetta dello Sport labeled him the best import of Serie A. While expectations are high, having seen what we have so far this season, we are confident that he can deliver.

NEW COACH: Ciro Ferrara

Fabio Cannavaro has spent most of his soccer career playing in the Italian Serie A with the exception of 3 years in the Liga before returning to Juventus this year. His illustrious career has netted him numerous Club and National championships and cups, and it was he who captained the Italian National Team in its 2006 World Cup victory. In that same 8

zeb 1.2

year, Cannavaro became the first defender (as well as the oldest recipient) of the FIFA World Player of the Year Award. Cannavaro promises a solidity in defence which he brings to the table as an older and more experienced player. His capability on the field is not only important in terms of what he can contribute to Juventus defence but also in what information and skill he can impart to the younger Juventus defenders who can look to him for guidance. His great leadership skills in defence makes this center-back an important re-acquisition both for the immediate and long-range future of the team.

Uruguayan national Martin Caceres comes to the black and white this year on loan from Barcelona. The 22 year old has played on Uruguay's under 20 team in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and now features on the senior team. The central defender, who has been known to also play both right and left back, is noted for his areal power, speed and aggression. His skills appear to be quite advanced for one so young and he has often been praised for being able to take a

firm hand in defence. He has already scored his first goal with Juventus against Lazio this year and shows great promise in his ability to execute the tasks given to him by Ferrara.

Brazilian-born Felipe Melo caught the eye of Fiorentina scouts in 2008 after he played a successful first season with Almeria in Spain. After signing with the viola, Brazilian coach Dunga noticed him and called him up for his national team. It was in fact his performance at the Confederation Cup with Brazil in the summer of 2009 that brought the Juventus attention on him and he was subsequently signed with the bianconeri. The 26 year old brings a much-needed dynamism to the Juventus midfield. His style is very compact and uncomplicated, often the best ingredient for a flowing midfield which promises to be brimming with ideas. In a climate where expectations are high, it bodes well that Mela has already scored his first goal for Juventus against Roma this season.

As a player, Ciro Ferrara is one of the most decorated ever: 7 Serie A championships, 3 Italian Super Cups, 1 Champions League Cup, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 European Supercup. This is not forgetting his career with the Italian national team where he boasts 49 appearances. Though he retired from playing in 2005, he always remained a part of the action, making up part of the technical staff for the 2006 World Cup winning team. After the World Cup he joined the Juventus staff in the youth section until he was named interim Head Coach in May 2009 and then confirmed as such for the following season. Ferrara seems to have a wellfocused vision of how he wants the team to work. His ideas appear to be clear both in essence and execution. This allows him to be able to pinpoint areas that need strength and the players required to obtain just that quality. This clarity of connection between the Coach and players is exactly what Juventus needs in order to obtain victories in all this year's endevours.

Welcome home, Fabio! It took 119 minutes of heart stopping action. And then it came. With a perfect pass from Andrea Pirlo, Fabio Grosso curled a beautiful shot past the German goalkeeper, leading Italy to what turned out to be the path to World Cup glory as he scored the winning penalty shot against France in the World Cup final. Now, Juventus has brought the World Champion left-back home after a twoyear spell with Lyon in France. The announcement came on August 31, and was met with great enthusiasm by Juventini worldwide. But no one was happier than the World Champion. ―I am happy, very happy," he told juventus.it. "I returned home. I really wanted to come to Juve and I managed to make this dream come true. In my career, I have always made choices that satisfied me."

Born in Rome on November 28, 1977, Grosso’s family hails from Chieti in Abruzzo. Raised in Chieti, Grosso played a number of seasons with Renato Curi Angolana, an amateur team of the Abruzzo Eccellenza division, and debuted at a professional level with Calcio Chieti of Serie C2. In 2001, Grosso joined Perugia and with this came his debut in Serie A. While there, coach Serse Cosmi transformed the player into a left back. The newly christened left back received his first Italy cap in 2003. For the next five seasons, Grosso played for Palermo (while they were in Serie B, 2004-2006), Inter Milan (200607) and Lyon. Juventus spent the summer courting being paid €1.2 million (C $1.9 million) the 31-year-old, but Lyon and the Ital- a year. ian giants finally agreed to a fee of €3 million (C $4.7 million), with the player Christina Salvino zeb 1.2

SIDE KICK: "Never go for a 50-50 ball unless you're 80-20 sure of winning it." Ian Darke, commentator

The Azzurri took to the field with the intention of exhibiting their worth to the sold -out crowd in Tiblisi. Though Lippi's men came out strong in the first 20 minutes of the game, penetrating the Georgian defence q ui ckly an d causing some scrambling along the defensive line, they lacked the capacity to provide the final

touch - a goal - in order to solidify what many saw as their sole purpose on the field. Ultimately, the constant pressure created by the Azzurri lead to 2 own-goals by Georgian captain Kaladze. A win in such a manner was disappointing for many but that would sweep away the opportunities created by Italians, opportunities which showed inspiration, creativity and decisiveness. Many times, the only thing that was missing was that pinch of luck often needed in a game. One thing that did stand out was the dominating presence of 5 Juventus players on the field that day. Buffon, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Camoranesi and Iaquinta worked hard

conjuring up chances, pushing forward, and creating pressure. They demonstrated that their continuous calls to the national side are not only due to their individual strengths but also to their combined capacity to understand each other on the field. Though, in the end, the Azzurri seemed to lack some conviction, it’s the hope that Lippi’s men furnished that was inspiring.

Complimenti! Alessandro Tozzi

A SHOUT-OUT TO….. zeb Magazine would like to send out a special "thank you" to the Soccer Fanatics. It is encouraging to find a group of people and a program that, week after week, continues to display such a passion for the sport. We at zeb were so excited about the launch of our first issue that you can only imagine how happy were when family, friends and members showed up at the Club Headquarters in order to show their support. There was food (thanks to Lanterna Ristorante), conversation, zebras to colour, prizes to give away, and all around general merriment. The feedback we received was amazing - thank you! That solidified our belief that this magazine project was not only worthwhile but necessary in order encourage a closer bond between Juventus Club DOC Toronto members, juventini in general and those within our community. August 23, 2009

August marked this year's Annual Juventus Club DOC Toronto Picnic. It's always a pleasure to meet members and have an arena in which to exchange ideas, partake in good conversation and play some games. This year, again, both food and fun were not lacking. Between the porchetta and the pasta e fagioli

there was enough for everyone. The afternoon was filled with soccer and bocce games, a raffle, membership sign-ups, and zeb magazine discussions. We thank everyone that came out to the picnic and we can't wait to see you at our next event!

Many organizations have ways to honour those whom they believe exemplify the traits for which the organization stands. It’s for this reason that we have now instituted a zeb magazine -Wall of Fame. Members will be able to vote for a Juventus player, past or present, who they believe shows true juventinitå, that is, passion for the game and the necessary skill to demonstrate his gifts on the field. For this issue we begin our inductee process by naming Roberto Baggio as worthy of placement on our Wall of Fame.

"When other players run, he stands still. When other players do the predictable, he creates. When other players are stressed, he keeps his cool." Jorge Valdano This was how the Italianspeaking world remembers the Divine Ponytail. The champion from Caldogno remains to this day one of the purest talents ever to kick a ball for his country. He was also one of the game's most intriguing characters. Although he played for the Azzurri and all of Italy's three big sides, none of them ever quite lived up to the thrill of his stay with Juventus. It is easy

18

zeb 1.2

to forget just how much of a talent Baggio was in 1994 dragging the Azzurri on his back (or ponytail) all the way to the finals of the World Cup. If it had not been for his pinpoint finish against Nigeria their tournament might have ended there. Having fought back from knee surgery as a teenager, we were lucky to see him play for as long as he did and when he retired there wasn't a single fan

anywhere who didn't feel the loss of this great player! He is possibly the only player currently alive who can claim to be the best the world has ever seen in his position who has played for Juve and the National side. Gino Mete

You can vote (and give us a reason why) for your preferred inductee on the zeb magazine-Wall of Fame by e-mailing us at juvemaga@yahoo.ca or mailing us at Juve Mag, 48 Sonny St., Maple, Ontario, L6A 1B7

B: Qualcosa in piú potevamo fare in

Coppa.

Stiamo aspettando tanti altri: Diego, Melo, Sissoko, Marchisio.

For an in-depth look at the lives of former Juve players, we asked our Foreign Correspondent, Francesco Mastrorizzi, for help from the other side of the ocean

TOP 10 ACQUISTI ANNI 2000 David Trezeguet (estate 2000).

The of being a Juventus fan

A

In this issue, we look at personal style. Being juventini, it is always important that we present ourselves in a stylish manner. While some looks are good for the stands of a soccer stadium, around town it’s a different story. In picture A, our model Christina is decked out in the Juventus jersey, scarf, gloves, tote bag, and ring, sure to turn a few heads on the street.....for all the wrong reasons. Her look is made up of so many different elements that's it's hard to focus anywhere and, therefore, the look seems

loud and confused. In picture B, though her exposition of Juventus products is a little more modest, she looks very stylish. One or two chosen pieces allow the viewer to focus and capture the essence and beauty of the pieces. We still know that she is a Juve fan, and she looks graceful and exuberant at the same time.

B

Remember that fierce Juventus attitude that we spoke about last time? That is always a necessary accessory.

This year marked the 20 year anniversary of the death of beloved Juventus sweeper Gaetano Scirea. In memory of his excellence both on and off the field, he is this issue's featured player in our Player Profiles section. When Gaetano Scirea transferred to Juventus from Atalanta in 1974, he not only became a part of the one of the most successful and loved clubs in soccer history, but he began leav-

ing what would become an unmistakable mark in the lives of all juventini. He was a proficient technical defender who played with grace and style. He could stand along the defensive line as well as push forward in order to create and often score goals. It is not by chance that Gaetano Scirea is one of only five players in European soccer history (along with Cabrini, Brio, Tacconi and Blind) to have won all soccer club trophies recognized by UEFA and FIFA. His skill was apparent to all and he excelled quickly as a libero. His move later on in his career to a more central defender did nothing to lessen his strength in his field. Scirea was known not only for his great sportsmanship and fair play on the field (never having received a

red card in his career), but he was also know for his notable class off the field. With his move to Juventus he was able to grab the attention of the national team coach who called him up to play for Italy in December of that same year. During his more than a decade long stint on the Italian team, he was irreplaceable as a leading defender as well as a member of the 1982 World

The first stone upon which to build a team able to win a Scudetto is undoubtedly Gigi Buffon, a goalkeeper without rival in the world who, if he could save a few more games, would be considered a superhero. It is widely accepted that when it comes to goaltending nobody does it better than Gigi. Juventus, having produced a wide variety of stoppers who ranged from the physically imposing, sly and cynically ruthless to the

more accomplished, intelligent and elegant incarnation of a Da Vinci master piece, has long been viewed as the home of the goaltender. Blessed with legends such as Zoff and Peruzzi, to name a few, it's understandable why the Juventus side has masterminded the fine art of goaltending, thus, allowing the defense to do their thing without any pressure. Soccer in Torino under Ferrara may not be of the champagne variety, but it has proved to be flexible and practical. Those ingreSIDE KICK: dients will undoubtedly be essential if Juventus is to "Soccer is not about finish the campaign in the justice. It's a drama - and criminally wrong decisions Champions league - an objective that, at this point against you are part and in history, is a lot more imparcel of that." portant than winning the Pete Davies, commentator Scudetto. Libra - September 24 - October 23 You work well within a group and you know it. Remember, though, that you can’t always wait around for others to do the work for you; you must contribute your own part. Follow your instinct when it comes to relationships because, even though you feel that you can’t trust yourself, you actually do know what’s better for you. You cannot hide within the group forever; it’s time to start making your mark.

Libras: Mauro Camoranesi (Oct 4), David Trezeguet (Oct 15), Nicola Legrottaglie (Oct 20)

Scorpio - October 24 - November 22

Scorpios: Vincenzo Iaquinta (Nov 1) Alessandro Del Piero (Nov 9)

Your mood can stretch to both extremes and that starts to worry those around you. It’s not necessary to hold a grudge; some things are just not that important. Your unique personality will draw people to you but it will ultimately be what pushes them away. Remember that you do not always have to be in control in order to be happy. Sometimes the happiness comes in giving others their own responsibilities and allowing them to fulfill them for you.

Sagittarius - November 23 - December 22 It's time that you stopped looking at people who want to be a part of your life as impediments to your independence. Independent does not have to mean alone. You can have both worlds. Talk to people with the same straightforwardness that you expect from them and you may be surprised at how understanding they can be. If they aren't as responsive as you would like them to be, use the power of your words to soften them and then try to find a middle ground that you can all be happy with. The sharing of experiences won't mean less for you, it will mean more for everyone.

Sagittarius: Fabio Grosso (Nov 28)

Capricorn - December 23 - January 20 Just because you are always the responsible one does not mean that others cannot be trusted with their tasks. Give people a chance and you may be surprised at how capable they can be. Other people lean on you for support. Make sure that you are there for them to lend a helping hand, not to pass judgment on their failings. Capricorns: Hasan Salihamidzic (Jan 1), Claudio Marchisio(Jan 20)

JUVE FACT: Juventus was the first soccer club to wear the Golden Stars for Sport Excellence, the two stars above the team crest. The two stars represent every 10 league championships won by the team, the first coming in 1958 and the second in 1982

Aquarius - January 21 - February 19 You are sometimes frightened by your own spontaneity but that’s the quality that makes you so liked by others. Don’t use this as a crutch, take advantage of all that your independence has to offer. Your lifestyle enables you to harvest wisdom from those who you encounter and that will help you in all your future endeavours. Your ability to think outside the box will enable you to stand out from the crowd. Pisces - February 20- March 20 What you crave is to escape but it’s important that you focus your energy on the here and now. Living too much in he ―what ifs‖ will lead you down a path of sure disappointment. Look to those around you to guide you because they are often more capable of seeing straight than you are. When they look to you, lend a helping hand, but refrain from making their problems your own. Everyone has a capacity and you should make sure you don’t take on too much for yourself. Aries - March 21 - April 20 You find yourself being moody and lashing out. Realize that this is because of your underlying insecurity and not because the world is against you. Take time for yourself instead of constantly giving to others. If you push yourself too much then you will start pulling back from everyone and then you will start feeling guilty. Your vitality is your strongpoint so use that to foster relationships and realize that you have a lot to offer. Taurus - April 21 - May 21 You like to follow the leader but don’t use that as an excuse to shirk your responsibilities. Your reactions tend to be to extremes: either you blow up over it or you are frightened into passivity. It’s time that you learned to mitigate those feelings into something more productive. You have the perseverance in you to grasp a task and stick to it and it’s time that you started utilizing that skill. Gemini - May 22 - June 21 Now is the best time to relax and take a breather. You like to think that you are independent but you know inside that what you crave is the comfort of other people. Open up and let people in. During this period, try to keep your emotions in check because you may find that the smallest things set you off. Remember, it doesn’t always have to be a confrontation, sometimes it can be a learning curve. Cancer - June 22 - July 22 Your oversensitivity to other people's reactions results in any criticism of you appearing harsh. It's time that you stop looking to others to validate you. You know your own worth and you have the determination to make things happen. Calm your mind and look inside yourself to find what's really important to you instead of following what others say is best. Even when you know that you're right, look at situation from the other's point of you and then you might better understand what they are going through, without overreacting. Leo - July 23 -August 21 People are attracted to you because of your vivacity and zest for life. However, your overconfidence sometimes gets in the way of your relationships. Learn to temper your attitude with some humility in order to soften your initial impression. You are always at your best when you have a project at hand so make sure to keep yourself busy. Virgo - August 22 - September 23 You doubt other people and are skeptical of their intentions. However, what’s worse is that you doubt yourself. Stop analyzing things beyond recognition. Sometimes issues are just straightforward and simple; stop complicating them. People often look to you for advise because of your logic: use that gift to help people instead of scrutinizing them. zeb 1.2

Ten interesting things about the FIFA World Player of the Year Award 1. The winner of 2006 award, Fabio Cannavaro, is the first defender, or player other than a midfielder or striker, to have ever won the award since its inception by Lothar Matthaus in 1991. The closest any other defender or goalkeeper has came to the award before were Oliver Kahn (Goalkeeper, second in 2002), Roberto Carlos (Defender, second in 1997) and Paolo Maldini (Defender, second in 1995). 2. In the past sixteen editions of the awards, it had been won by strikers and midfielders seven times each, making outfield players (with the exception of defenders), a more popular choice for the award. It is surmised that strikers and midfielders hoard most of the glory in competitions, therefore their chances are higher than defenders and goalkeepers.

6. Other than Juan Roman Riquleme’s nomination in 2007 when he was playing on loan for Boca Juniors, all the players on the short list came from clubs in Europe. 7. No English Player or Player from United Kingdom have ever won the award before. The closest have been Gary Lineker (1991, third), Alan Shearer (1996, third), David Beckham (1999 and 2001, both second) and Frank Lampard (2005, second).

8. Brazil has the most wins by nationality. Brazilian 3. There are two triple winners of the awards since its inception: French players have won the award a staggering seven times; midfielder Zinedine Zidane (1998, 2000 and 2003) and Brazilian striker four times more than the closet nationality of French with three wins. Ronaldo (1996, 1997 and 2002). 9. The last six winners of the award have come from teams in the Spanish 4. No player has ever won the award for three consecutive years, though La Liga. two have come close: Ronaldo (1996 and 1997) and Ronaldinho (2004 and 2005). 10. FC Barcelona has had six winners from players within its ranks while rivals Real Madrid have had four. Thus, the majority of winners (63%) have 5. Although the award is meant for the world’s best player, only players from been from those teams in the past sixteen awards. Their closet rival for this Europe, Africa and South American have made it to the final short list. Hence honor is Juventus with four winners. there has been quite some criticism from those in the corners of the world about the selection process.
