It is easy to be a fan when things are going great: there‘s an extra spring in your step when you‘re on top of the standings; your smile is that much brighter on Monday when you have a Champions League game later that week; your laugh is that much louder when you team is playing at its best. But the true mark of a fan is knowing how to be there for your team when things get tough. Constructive criticism, honest reflection and unceasing hope is essential. Our job as juventini is to stay united, knowing that together we can overcome anything. It seems like only yesterday that we started this magazine, yet we are already on our third issue. Comments and pictures come to us from all over. Whether we are in Toronto, Ottawa, London, Park City, Rome….we are anywhere and everywhere. The love for our team is unstoppable, as is our spirit.
Wow — a third issue and so much positive feedback! Who knew our little magazine would get such a wonderful reception? It has been great to read people‘s comments and see their photo and know that we have a possibility to reach out to a lot of individuals in the community. In a Serie A season that has left a lot of people scratching their heads, it‘s comforting to know that they still have a place they can come to vent their frustrations, reminisce about good games and great goals, and discuss their predictions while hoping for a successful future. I look forward to meeting more of you this year, at the Club Headquarters or at Club events, as we prepare for our World Cup 2010 issue next issue! Forza Juve and Forza Italia!

Amici Juventini, Non posso non iniziare con un BEN TORNATO al nostro Roberto Bettega nel ruolo che gli compete. Ma, è proprio andato via? Noi non abbiamo avvertito niente. Chi è Juventino non va mai via, e Bettega ne è la riprova! Forse, in tanti ci siamo chiesti, cosa ha spinto l' ex Vice Presidente a questo atto d' amore verso quello stemma che per 40 anni ha rappresentato la sua vita e continua ad essere uno dei motivi principali della sua esistenza?
Sappiamo, ovviamente, uanto i valori famigliari e sociali siano importanti per lui, e quanto, questi valori vandano a braccetto con la sua quotidianità Juventina. A Natale, Roberto ha regalato a tutti i tifosi sparsi nel mondo una speranza e un motivo in più per continuare a tifare per la Vecchia Signora! Chi se non lui poteva farci un simile regalo? All'amore non si dice mai di no. E il "nostro" Bettega è un eterno innamorato! Bentornato Roberto! E soprattuto buon lavoro! Il Ballo in Maschera del 30 Gennaio è alle porte. Mentre leggete questo messaggio sarete probabilmente nel mezzo della festa con tanti altri appassionati di sport. Non posso far altro che dirvi GRAZIE per essere intervenuti e per il sostegno che date a questo Club! Un ringraziamento senza fine va senz'altro al Direttivo, che da anni fa tutto il possible per la riuscita delle nostre iniziative, senza sosta, e credetemi richiede passione sportiva e tanto spirito di sacrificio. Trovo che la rivista sia ben organizzata. Si vede che c'è dietro un grande lavoro e una grande passione. Andando oltre i soliti temi: i calendari (accipicchia tutti, non ne avete saltato uno), il giocatore del mese (Wall of Fame), il giocatore del passato (where are they now?), la recensione sull'incontro club, le fotografie dei fan... risalta il resoconto dettagliato dell'attività del club: stuzzica l'interessa del lettore, infonde la voglia di partecipare, informa a 360 gradi con uno sguardo alla nazionale e ai giocatori italiani all'estero. Ma tutti questi eventi organizzate? Ma bravi davvero! Siete più attivi voi che siete lontani che noi in Italia! Veramente complimenti! Spero riscuoterete il consenso che meritate. Congratulations on your second zeb magazine. I have noticed that you are getting better every time. This second edition is more informative than the first one. You deserve a big hand. The London Juventus members are very excited about this magazine because we get to know more about our Club in Toronto and the Juventus Club of Torino in Italy, and it helps us to be closer to both Clubs. The Juventus Club of Toronto has so far done some great work, such as a trip to see Juventus in Torino, which some of us attended. We had a lot of fun watching Juventus playing at the stadium and also meeting players and we even made new friends among the Juve Club of Toronto members. We also love the Juventus Club Dinners, always with great food and entertainment. Therefore, keep up the good work as you have been doing. Thanks for sending me a copy. I thought it was excellent. Great to see that the Juve community is strong. Obviously we are quite focused on the EPL due to being a rights holder, but I do want to start covering Serie A in more depth, so it’s encouraging to hear from the Juve crowd, as well as any Serie A fans. Letters to the Editors I was one of the people given the responsibility of calling members and obtaining feedback on how the Club is doing. A common comment that I received was that they felt that there was a lack of communication between the Board and its members and they didn‘t feel our presence in the community. What is your response to this? -A.N., Woodbridge Dear A.N., Honestly, it’s one of those things that is a mystery to me. As a Board Member, former Secretary and current Assistant to the President, I have firsthand knowledge of the type of communication that goes out to our members. We commu-
nicate Club events and news by sending letters via regular mail, almost weekly e-mail newsletters, announcements in the local paper, on the radio, via Twitter, on Facebook, not to mention our Official website and zeb magazine. Also, we always encourage people to call, write or email us with their questions and concerns. We as a Club can only provide opportunities for our members to get together, whether or not they decide to partake in such activities is up to them, but I feel that it’s unfair to put the blame on lack of communication as the culprit when some people simply lack the spirit to participate. - T.P.

Getting to know you
Tony Ciamarra Imagine a Little boy, 8 years of age in 1960 who was born in Torella Del Sannio, Campobasso. The local kids‘
pastime was avoiding some chores imposed by the parents for the purpose of playing some pick up soccer in the nearby piazza. Not having the luxury of modern day it was challenging to keep up with the sports activities that were taking places in the major Italian centers. One afternoon after helping Don Antonio, the town priest, with one of his Masses, my good friend Valter announced to the boys that we were invited to his house to watch a soccer game on television. Imagine, this was the first T.V. in the entire town. Naturally the excitement was intense and electrifying. We could hardly con-
tain ourselves with the anticipation of seeing players such as Omar Sivori and John Charles. As we arrived at my friend‘s place with a brigade of kids, Valter‘s mother decided that there were way too many of us and we were not allowed to go into the home to watch the game. However thanks to Valter, he opened the drapes slightly so we could watch from outside. Since the wonder of High definition television had not yet arrived , the only thing we could follow was the black and white stripes of the juventus players dashing back and forth. Mi chiamo Gina Pace e i miei ricordi più remoti per quanto riguarda la Juventus vanno ai primi anni delle scule elementari. Mio fratello giocava nella squadra del quartiere, con la divisa bianconera, ed io cercavo di non perdermi mai una partita, sempre accompagnata da mio padre. Ricordo che custodivo gelosamente in tasca una fotografia di John Charles, il mio idolo. Un momento indimenticabile della mia "carriera" di tifosa juventina fu durante una partita di Coppa: era l'ultimo minuto di gioco e, salvo un miracolo, saremmo stati eliminati. Ma proprio al novantessimo minuto un gol meraviglioso ci fece qualificare. Da una partita di calcio una lezione per la vita: ma darsi per vinti, combattere fino all'ultimo!

We don‘t know where Mimmo Petruzzino, from Foggia, Italy, dug these pictures out from, but we are excited to see how long he‘s been a fan. These 1957 pictures of him (above) and his childhood team (below) are proof positive that once you get a taste of Juve, you‘re hooked for life! Mimmo is also the brother of our Italian-Language Editor, Gina Pace. Who said that juventinitis is not contagious?!

Derby D’Italia: The Juventus - Internazionale Showdown Comments From the Other Side by Interista Danny Titolo Pre-Match Report Juventus Under the Microscope Il Derby d‘Italia? Il Calciopoli Derby? Or maybe it‘s just Juventus vs Inter? Whatever people will call it, this is a match that all soccer fans will flock to and will captivate the emotions of everyone that watches. On Saturday December 5th, 2009, 2:45 EST, these two powerhouses will collide in an extraordinary spectacle of soccer. In the weeks leading up to this match most Juventus players, supporters included, were hoping to be headed into the derby d‘Italia on level points with Inter. But with Juventus crumbling to Cagliari, slipping into third place and eight points behind the Nerazzurri, things have definitely not gone according to plan. As a result, this is a huge match, especially for Juventus since anything less than a win could end their Scudetto hopes. Juventus has been under extreme media scrutiny recently. Major summer signings have not delivered as hoped, the roster has been riddled with injuries that have taken their toll, and a cloud of uneasiness has blanketed Turin. With fans showing their frustrations by protesting against the club, it appears as though everyone zeb 1.3 8
has had enough. All of this adds to the build-up and pressure of the upcoming derby. Ciro Ferrara has his own issues. Being out-coached by the likes of Mourinho and Leonardo as of late, it is no surprise he has kept a low profile in the week leading up to the derby. He broke silence by commenting to the press that ―Inter is definitely beatable, but only with a perfect Juventus.‖ If the season is to improve, the Vecchia Signora will need to remain positive and raise its game performance if she wants support from her fans instead of criticism. A positive note for Juventus is their home record against Inter. In 76 matches between these two in Turin, Juventus boast a big advantage having won 52, drawn 14 and lost 10. While these numbers make for positive reading among Juventus fans, the tides have turned as of late with Juventus winless at home against the Nerazzurri since 2005.
JUVE FACT: Alessandro Del Piero holds the record of both most appearances and most goals for Juventus. These totals are still ongoing!
Inter Eager to End Juventus’ Scudetto Hopes Although the performance of the Nerazzurri in Europe has been mediocre at best, in Serie A they have been dominant. Inter has the best attack and defense, has a single loss and is looking to solidify its position in first place after the derby. Jose Mourinho and his players know that a win at the Olimpico will see the Vecchia Signora practically out of the Scudetto race. There has been a lot of hype surrounding Mario Balotelli and the fears that he may be the target of racial slurs in Turin. Mourinho will most likely not start him against Juventus and may put him on as a late substitute depending on the circumstances of the game. Although the ―Special One‖ will defintely be eager to win for the first time in Turin as a coach, a loss will not be the end of the world for the Nerazzurri. A home game against Rubin Kazan next Wednesday in the Champions League is where priorities lie for Inter. A loss will end their European campaign, so it will be critical to establish the right mindset in Turin.
Post-Match Analysis The scudetto race is back on as the Vecchia Signora shows signs of life by beating Internazionale. It was quite clear when the Juventus players embraced around centre field that they had a renewed sense of belief following their 2-1 victory at the Olimpico. For the Bianconeri this win could not have come at a better time as their hopes to re-enter the Scudetto race have now been
revived. The best Inter team definitely did not show up at this match. Players like Sneijder and Maicon were clearly missed. Tension and negativity seemed to get the better of the Nerazzurri during the game and was also evident afterwards as they quickly left the field. The defeat will not have much of an effect on the Beneamata's position atop the Serie A standings, but hopefully the result
will not create a psychological setback before its Champions League game with Rubin Kazan. A number of Inter players voiced their disappointment with the match officiating, namely the questionable foul on Alessandro Del Piero by Walter Samuel that was responsible for the first Juventus goal. Nevertheless, it was clear that Juventus was playing out of desperation and came out of its dressing room much hungrier than Inter in what was a very physical encounter. The Juventus midfield, namely Mohamed Sissoko and Claudio Marchisio, was the deciding factor in this match. Even though the Bianconeri won a majority of the challenges and had twice as many shots on goal, both sides were evenly matched in all other areas of the field. As a result of Maicon and Sneijder missing the match, Inter was forced to play a considerable number of long ball passes that did not have much promise. This made it much easier for the Juventus midfield to take control when Inter would attempt a counterattack. The mediocre performances of both Alessandro Del Piero and Diego further shows how important a factor Marchisio was for the Vecchia Signora. The Bianconeri have little time to celebrate and the Nerazzurri have
little time to dust themselves off and refocus since both sides have Champions League matches just around the corner. Juventus and Inter will be looking to finalize their spots in the knock-out stages of Europe‘s top club competition. This victory only earned Juventus three points, but it will be interesting to see the psychological effect it will have on both teams as the group stages of the Champions League come to an end, and the Serie A winter break approaches. Round one may have gone to Juventus, but round two will be played in Milan against a hopefully much hungrier and more determined Internazionale.

L: Nessuno mette in dubbio la capacità di Diego, ma ha risentito del trasferimento dalla Germania all‘Italia. Poi ha risentito I problemi della nostra squadra. Sono convinto che prima o poi risorgerà da grande campione perché in campo non si tira mai indietro, gioca anche per la squadra.

B: Grosso é rimasto quell‘ uomo di Lippi: sta bene nella nazionale perché gioca nello stesso ruolo dei mondiali. Nella Juve non si trova a suo agio e gioca al modo suo. Non sarò troppo duro con lui perche mi ricordo dei mondiali cos ì mi fermo qui perché lui é un campione del mondo e spero che la Juve trovi un modo di gioco per lui.
Cannavaro B: Per lui é un felice ritorno. Io l‘ho perdonato. Lui ha sempre detto che la Juve ha vinto ventinove scudetti, che li ha vinto sul campo. Non ho mai creduto che lui se ne sia andato di volonta sua: é stato mandato via. Io gli perdono tutto. Non dimentichiamo che é più anziano e che deve tenere in forma una difesa senza centrocampo. Cannavaro può anche insegnare dalla panchina e lui potrà fare facilmente un‘altro anno. L: Il ritorno di Cannavaro non mi ha mai convinto. É un giocatore alla fine della carriera. Poi, non capisco perché la società ritenga sia importante includere dei ―vecchi‖ giocatori nel suo ―nuovo‖ progetto.
Caceres L: É stata una grande sorpresa dall‘inizio. Si impegna, ha entusiasmo, sarà un grande acquisto. B: Il suo futuro é da centrale. É stato un buon affare, ed é anche ancora molto giovane cosi puo sempre migliorare. Commette qualche fallo in pu ì ma é solo un segno di inesperienza. É la sorpresa più lieta.
Buffon B: Si può sempre fare affidamento su un giocatore come Buffon. É sempre un grandissimo juventino, ama la Juve, é andato in serie B con noi...Oltre ad essere un grande giocatore, é anche un grand‘uomo. Lo amo troppo. L: Rimane ancora uno dei migliori portieri. Avendolo in squadra dà sempre un senso di sicurezza. Lui può fare la differenza.
Ferrara L: Non do la colpa a lui. La colpa é di chi ha scelto di dare alla Juve un allenatore che non ha mai allenato una squadra. B: Ferrara come uomo é stato ed é un grande. Personalmente non l‘ho mai visto come allenatore perché non penso che sia in grado di dirigere una squadra. Poteva fare il Direttore Tecnico, il Team Manager, un Dirigente, ma allentore no. Non credo che sia un grande comunicatore; é quieto ed introverso, una persona molto seria. Spero di essermi sbagliato però per me non é da Juventus. La Signora ha troppi giocatori ―grandi‖. Ha esordito, infatti, nella Liga spagnola a soli 18 anni e a 19 è diventato capitano dell'Atlético Madrid, squadra nella quale è cresciuto. It is important for the players to have confidence in their capabilities and their coaching staff so that they understand that they are to be focused on the task at hand and that they are playing for a team where insubordination will not be tolerated. England‘s Coach, Fabio Capello, is very knowledgeable about the sport, he knows how other teams play and, most of all, he is famous for knowing how to motivate players. Capello knows how to adapt his style of play depending on his opponent, so it is difficult for his adversaries to understand in advance the type of play that his team will engage in. Il Club DOC Juventus accoglie con grande entusiasmo la notizia diramata dalla Juventus F.C.,del ritorno di Roberto Bettega in seno alla società con pieni poteri operativi nel settore tecnico/sportivo. Il ritorno di Bettega alla Juventus dopo due anni di assenza, segna una svolta profonda e significativa per la nostra squadra del cuore. La sua serietà professionale, la profonda conoscenza del settore assegnatogli e l'amore che lo lega da oltre 40 anni saranno le armi giuste per riportare la Juventus a livelli internazionali. Ma per tutti noi Roberto non è mai andato via, sapevamo che prima o poi sarebbe tornato al suo grande amore. Il Direttivo del Club, i soci e tutti i Torontini si uniscono per augurare a Roberto un buon proseguimento di gestione di quel che lui ha sempre amato e di cui ha fatto una ragione di vita. Joe Bonavota Il ritorno di Bettega ha tranquilizato molti di noi. Ha fatto vedere che ci siamo lasciati alle spalle le colpe di Calciopoli, anzi ―Falsopoli‖. Cosi tranquilizza anche Ferrara. I giocatori vedono Bettega come una leggenda, cosi sono incoraggiati. Bettega ha sempre detto che i ventinove scudetti li abbiamo vinti sul campo. La sala San Marco di Ottawa il 14 novembre scorso ha accolto I tifosi dell‘Associazione Sportiva di Ottawa Juventus Club – Gaetano Scirea. Una sala gremita di tifosi ha festeggiato l‘incontro annuale con la consueta serata di gala annuale con qualche cambiamento. Ad animare la serata c‘era Edoardo Monasterolo della CHIN International Radio venuto per l‘occasione da Toronto. La serata ha incluso il gioco a Premi ―Deal or no Deal‖ condotto dallo stesso Edoardo coadiuvato da Joe Cama con il ruolo del ―dottore‖ ed Enzo Bertorelli che faceva il ―telefonista‖; le valigie con i premi nascosti erano invece gelosamente tenute da un gruppo di ragazze intervenute alla festa. Vincitrice del premio è stata una tifosa Juventina di Toronto, Julia Pace, che era venuta a partecipare alla festa con altri 4 tifosi anche essi venuti per l‘occasione da Toronto. Nato a Sesto San Giovanni il 22 aprile 1964, Massimo Carrera ha legato il suo nome a molte squadre italiane. La sua carriera da professionista è durata 26 anni: dal 1982, anno in cui è stato lanciato dalla Pro Sesto (squadra della sua città), al 2008, quando ha lasciato il calcio giocato all‘età di 44 anni, chiudendo l‘ultima parentesi con la Pro Vercelli. La squadra in cui si fa notare maggiormente agli inizi di carriera è quella del Bari, dove arriva all‘età di 22 anni e vi rimane per cinque stagioni, prima di passare nel 1991 alla Juventus. La stagione seguente a Torino arriva Pietro Vierchowod e Carrera perde il posto da titolare, subentrando spesso dalla panchina, ma non facendo mai mancare il suo importante apporto. Nei suoi cinque anni bianconeri contribuisce a tutte le vittorie ottenute da Giovanni Trapattoni e da Marcello Lippi: uno Scudetto, una Champions League, una Coppa Uefa, una Coppa Italia, una Supercoppa Italiana. All‘indomani della vittoria di Champions di Roma, viene ceduto all‘Atalanta, la cui maglia vestirà per sette stagioni fino al 2003. Le due stagioni successive gioca al Napoli e al Treviso. In Veneto rimane solo una stagione e nell‘ottobre del 2005, nonostante i suoi quarantun'anni, firma con la Pro Vercelli. Qui il difensore lombardo, da sportivo serio qual è, non molla il ruolo da protagonista e scende in campo
con impressionante regolarità. Ed è così che all‘età di 44 anni diventa il giocatore professionista più anziano ad essere sceso in campo nella storia del calcio italiano (non considerando i portieri). Forte di questo record, al termine della stagione 2007/08 decide di lasciare il calcio giocato per dedicarsi all'attività di allenatore. L‘anno dopo, il 18 giugno 2009, Carrera ritorna alla Juventus, entrando a far parte del settore giovanile. Il ruolo che gli viene assegnato è quello di coordinatore tecnico. A Torino ritrova tanti ex compagni di squadra, come Pessotto, Rampulla e Ferrara, un po‘ invecchiati, ma con la stessa voglia e lo stesso entusiasmo di 13 anni prima. Il nuovo impegno lo mette a contatto con tutte le squadre giovanili, con l'obiettivo di seguire da vicino tutti gli allenatori e i giovani calciatori. Un incarico che sta a metà strada tra il campo e la scrivania e nel quale Carrera si impegna costantemente a trasmettere ai ragazzi la mentalità e lo stile Juve, ma anche l‘amore e la passione per il calcio.

TOP 10 ALLENATORI Carlo Carcano (1930/34): Arriva a Torino dall'Alessandria nel 1930 e sulla panchina dei bianconeri vince quattro dei cinque scudetti consecutivi che contrassegnano il ―Quinquennio d'oro‖ juventino. Il suo è un record ancora imbattuto nel campionato italiano. Vice di Pozzo ai Mondiali del ‘34, alla fine di quello stesso anno viene mandato via a campionato in corso per le voci di una sua presunta omosessualità. Heriberto Herrera (1964/69): È l'allenatore straniero che vanta il maggior numero di presenze sulla panchina bianconera (215, terzo in assoluto). Nei cinque anni un cui allena la squadra (salvo una breve parentesi nel 1967), vince, tuttavia, soltanto uno scudetto nella stagione 1966/67 ed una Coppa Italia nella stagione 1964/65. Cestmir Vycpalek (1971/74): Nel 1970, esonerato dal Mazara, che gioca in Serie D, viene chiamato al Torino dal suo vecchio amico Giampiero Boniperti, diventando allenatore delle giovanili. Nel 1971, dopo l'improvvisa morte di Armando Picchi, viene nominato allenatore della prima squadra. Fino al 1974 vince due scudetti, nelle stagioni 1971/72 e 1972/73. Giovanni Trapattoni I (1976/86): Alla guida della Juventus è stato capace di vincere tutte le competizioni UEFA per club, unico allenatore della storia ad avere raggiunto tale traguardo. Durante il suo primo ciclo in bianconero ci ha permesso di vincere, inoltre, sei campionati su dieci disputati e una serie infinita di coppe a tutti i livelli. Dino Zoff (1988/90): Viene ingaggiato come tecnico nell'estate del 1988, rimanendo per due stagioni. Due le vittorie ottenute, una Coppa Italia e una Coppa UEFA, entrambe nel 1990, nonostante un organico decisamente scadente. Da vincente viene mandatovia per far posto a Maifredi e alla sua zona.
Giovanni Trapattoni II (1991/94): Nelle tre stagioni del secondo ciclo juventino poche soddisfazioni per il mister di Cusano Dilanino. Riesce comunque ad ottenere una importante vittoria in campo internazionale con la conquista della Coppa UEFA nel ‗93. Marcello Lippi I (1994/99): Si siede sulla panchina della Juve per 8 stagioni, una delle quali incompleta. Nel primo ciclo di 5 anni vince tutto quello che c‘è da vincere, dalla Coppa Italia alla Coppa Intercontinentale, rendendo la Juve la squadra più forte d‘Italia e una delle migliori in Europa e nel mondo, apprezzata da tutti gli sportivi per il suo gioco e soprattutto per la capacità di lottare e di non arrendersi mai. Carlo Ancelotti (1999/2001): In due stagioni e mezza, con una squadra forse non ottima come gli anni precedenti, non riesce a vincere niente. Ma bruciano molto i due immeritati secondi posti ai danni delle squadre romane, che qualcuno nella capitale ha deciso di aiutare regalando uno scudetto per ognuna. Sicuramente avrebbe meritato di più. Marcello Lippi II (2001/04): Nel secondo ciclo di tre anni regala alla società altri due scudetti, uno dei quali è quello del 5 maggio 2002, dimostrando che a volte la minestra riscaldata è ancora buona. Si fa valere anche in Europa, ma in finale di Champions è amara la sconfitta contro il Milan. Fabio Capello (2004/06): Due sole le stagioni alla guida dei bianconeri, ma dominio indiscusso per due campionati dalla prima all‘ultima giornata e due scudetti che senza dubbio nessuna persona sana di mente potrebbe dire che non siano stati meritati. Soccer rivalries are battled out not only on the field but also in the stands and through the media. Sometimes it can be difficult to decipher where the actual conflict originated: whether it's a manifestation of the actual soccer rivalry or if the rivalry was propagated by the media's concentration on it. The Juventus-Milan rivalry is felt both on a national and an international level. Often touted the "real Italian derby", the bianconeri have won 27 championships to Mi l a n ' s 17, though on the international level Milan has won the Champions League title 7 times to Juve's 2 - one of those which Juventus lost to Milan (ouch!) Gino Mete
Black and White Shortbread Wedges Ingredients 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup cornstarch 3 (1 ounce) squares BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate, coarsely chopped Directions - Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on high speed 3 minutes or until light and fluffy. Combine flour and cornstarch. Gradually add to butter mixture, beating until well blended. Stir in chocolate. - Shape dough into ball, then divide into 3 equal pieces. Flatten 1 piece into 4-inch round on baking sheet. Score into 8 wedges with sharp knife. Repeat with remaining dough. - Bake 30 minutes or until shortbread is set and lightly browned. Cool 5 minutes on baking sheet. Remove to wire racks; cool completely. Cut each round into 8 wedges to serve.
