Message FROM THE MARKETING DIRECTOR

I

! u o y t u o b a is e c a r is Th

t is my pleasure and honour to welcome you to the Cape Town leg of the SPAR women’s 10km / 5km road race, which forms part of the SPAR Grand Prix series of road races throughout the country. Collectively these popular races have become known as South Africa’s ‘Most Beautiful Race’, as they are aimed

at women, young and old, fit and unfit, serious runners and those entering just for the fun – all women, the beautiful backbone of our society. The Cape Town race has had many ‘homes’ as such, having in the past been run in the surrounds of Canal Walk, Bellville and even the Newlands Cricket Ground. It has its heart in the inner city

though. The first races in the early 90’s started close to the Green Point Common Fields and were run in the precints of Green Point and along the Sea Point promenade. Those days there were less than 1000 entrants. Last year we attracted 23 355 entrants! At SPAR women are very important to us. We are involved with the sponsorship of women’s sport at local and international levels. SPAR sponsors our national Netball team, and SPAR in the Western Cape now sponsors a schoolgirls’ hockey tournament. Even the charities associated with this race are those held dear by women. The first race beneficiary, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, and now Operation Smile South Africa, both benefit our children. I would like to thank the race organisers, Western Province Athletics, and their team of volunteers who do it for the love of running, working tirelessly for weeks running up to the event, as well as our media partners, Die Burger and Heart FM. Also a big hand goes out to the SPAR marketing team, who seem to surpass their tremendous efforts of ‘bigger and better’ each year. Ultimately this race is about you. I encourage you to have fun and enjoy the day with your friends. May you meet the goal that you have set yourself. Celebrate your womanhood, and the role that you play in your family, your community and our country.

hat a pleasure to welcome Capetonian ‘gals’ – South Africa’s most beautiful women – to the Cape Town leg of the 10th SPAR Grand Prix series, the 24th year your SPAR race is being hosted in Cape Town. Whatever your reason for running or walking, 17 April will be a Sunday morning well worth getting out of bed for. There is much to celebrate. Firstly, there is a fabulous route along the Promenade. You can chat non-stop for 10km or 5km with your best friend. Even make a new one. You will receive a beautiful beaded achievement bracelet, the proceeds of which go to empower women (read article on page 14), a proud reminder that you finished the race. After we have honoured our top runners, all girl band, BlackByrd, is sure to put a smile on the face of our beautiful mountain. R24 000 worth of SPAR shopping vouchers are also waiting for one lucky winner – another big reason to smile.

Just by entering, you have put R5 towards the amazing work that this non-profit organisation provides by offering free reconstructive surgery to children born with cleft lips and/or cleft palates. Our top runners complete this race in less time than the 45 minutes it takes to perform these life altering operations! Then there is YOU, of course! The biggest reason to celebrate. See you at the start. Sunday 17 April. Green Point. I look forward to celebrating and having fun with you.

History of the

CAPE TOWN SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE THE WOMEN OF CAPE TOWN HAVE BEEN LACING THEIR RUNNING SHOES FOR OVER A DECADE TO TAKE PART IN SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ROAD RACE! IN THIS FIRST EDITION OF THE OFFICIAL RACE MAGAZINE, WE GLANCE BACK OVER THE RACE’S HISTORY.

S

PAR took over sponsorship of the race in 1991 when it was held in Durban. It was then known as the SPAR Ladies Challenge but was changed to the SPAR Women’s Challenge in 1992. The aim of the race was to get women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels to enjoy doing something healthy within a supportive atmosphere – with the added bonus of knowing they are doing something for charity. Everyone is welcome to register and run the race, whether you are a seasoned marathon runner or if you are just starting out. Participants are welcome to run or walk. 6

2016 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

The Durban Challenge was so successful that SPAR started introducing the Women’s Challenge to other major cities around South Africa. Today it is held in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth and over 120 000 women take part each year. The Cape Town SPAR Women’s Race has been held at various venues through the years, taking the runners past some iconic locations. The first Cape Town race had around eight hundred entries and started and ended at Hamilton’s Rugby Club and went through Green Point and along the Sea Point Promenade. This was quite a few years before Cape Town

Stadium was built. Elana Meyer won the first Cape Town race in 1993 with a time of 34 minutes, 5 seconds. In 2001 and 2002 the start of the race was moved to Canal Walk and went through Ratanga Junction Theme Park. In 2003 the venue was changed again and the race began at Sahara Park Newlands Cricket Grounds. JP Duminy and Paul Adams agreed to wear tutus to advertise the race’s new location! By then, the number of runners was up to 6000. The race stayed at Newlands until 2006. From 2007 to 2010, it was moved to the Bellville Velodrome. It was around 2008 that the SPAR Women’s Challenge

5

201

really started gaining momentum and the Cape Town race then attracted up to 10 000 runners. The race was moved back to Green Point in 2011 and has stayed there since then. In 2015, the Cape Town race had 23 355 entries. In 2007, a competitive element was added to the SPAR Women's Race with the introduction of the SPAR Grand Prix Series where professional runners are invited to take part in all of the regional races and compete for substantial cash prizes. The top runners in each race are awarded points and the participant with the highest number of points after the five races in the SPAR Women’s Challenge Series have been run is awarded a huge cash prize. Operation Smile is the main beneficiary of the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge. Operation Smile does amazing things, working miracles on children around the globe who suffer from cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities. Operation Smile is a non-profit organization and performs all surgeries for free. In 2013, the Women’s Challenge raised R100 000 that was donated to Operation Smile. Road running or walking is an extremely effective form of exercise with virtually no costs involved and SPAR hopes that by sponsoring road-running events, it will encourage women from all walks of life to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

We want our race entrants to feel extra special this year. Race Organiser, Elsabé van Zyl-Félix who is the Advertising Manager for SPAR Western Cape and Namibia said that the decision to switch from the traditional medals to the bracelets was made based on the dual opportunity to support

By giving them something that they can wear every day, we also give them the chance to be reminded of their achievement and the contribution that they made to their community by taking part in the race.” Elsabé said that the chosen charity for the race, Operation Smile South Africa also benefits from these bracelets. s part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, SPAR has announced that each of the runners who have won the SPAR Grand Prix title will take a promising junior runner under her wing. This mentorship programme will include the junior runners travelling to all five races with their mentors, and having access to advice about training, strategy and various aspects of the competition. The SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge series is by far the biggest in South Africa, with more than 120 000 women competing in the five races held around the country. Many of South Africa’s elite athletes have launched their careers in the SPAR 16

Challenge, with runners like Rene Kalmer and Irvette van Zyl making their mark while still running as juniors. In an environment where women’s sporting achievements are largely under-reported, the Challenge has been an opportunity for the top runners to receive the recognition they richly deserve. The SPAR Grand Prix was launched in 2007 to consolidate the five SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge races into a single series for elite athletes. It has proved highly successful, with South Africa’s top runners vying for the top spot and raising the profile of each of the five races, which are held in Cape

Several runners who have won the SPAR Grand Prix have either qualified, or are in the process of qualifying, for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year, and Kalmer and Van Zyl both took part in the London Olympics in 2012. Rene Kalmer has won the SPAR Grand Prix title three times and Irvette van Zyl has won it twice. Poppy Mlambo won the second title. The ebullient Mapaseka Makhanya won in 2014, and the road running twins, Diana-Lebo and Lebogang Phalula took the title in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Kalmer said she was very excited about the mentorship programme. “I think it’s awesome that we are going to mentor some of the junior runners,” she said. “I feel privileged to be able to give something back.” She said the junior runners would find that running was not always plain sailing, but their mentors would be there to help them through the bad patches. “The juniors will travel to the SPAR races with us, so we will be able to advise them and to help them with training programmes and race tactics. 2016 WHO WILL BE THE WINNER FOR THIS YEAR?

The SPAR Grand Prix is 10 years old! Started in 2007 to consolidate the five SPAR Ladies 10km Challenge races into a single series for elite athletes, the annual SPAR Grand Prix is now the most prestigious road running series in South Africa. It is the only competition of its kind in local road running. Outstanding women athletes accumulate points over the five SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge races and thereby become eligible for cash prizes at the end of the series. Total prize money in 2016 is just over R405 000! The SPAR Grand Prix attracts women runners of all ages by offering prizes across four age categories as well as the open category: the age categories are juniors, 4049 years, 50-59 years and over 60 years. While the SPAR Grand Prix encourages elite women athletes to compete for big prizes, the five SPAR Ladies Challenge events over 5km and 10km still cater for runners and walkers of all abilities and offer everyone a chance to test themselves against their own personal goals, whatever they may be.

WE CHALLENGE YOU TO

#runclean MODERN ATHLETE MAGAZINE IS CALLING ON ALL RUNNERS, RACE ORGANISERS, ATHLETIC PROVINCES AND RACE SPONSORS TO JOIN THE #RUNCLEAN CAMPAIGN, BECAUSE THEY FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THE LITTER PROBLEM IN ROAD RUNNING. IT’S TIME TO CLEAN UP OUR RUNNING ACT! 24

2016 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

MY race

T

he SPAR Women’s Challenge Cape Town is joining Modern Athlete in their mission to promote a cleaner sport and to try to eradicate the litter problem in our races, by continually reminding runners to think before they throw. That’s because we believe that every piece of plastic not dumped on the road is a step in the right direction, which will not only lead to less litter on the roads, but in the long run to less waste being produced by our sport, much of which potentially ends up in the sensitive environment or the oceans, especially if the wind is blowing during a race. This cause is close to SPAR’s heart as they have embarked on a similar campaign – It’s Our Plastic, It’s Our Problem. SPAR is encouraging shoppers to bring their plastic bags with them when shopping so that they can be reused over and over again – or to purchase a SPAR shopping bag. This campaign is being run in partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Respect initiative. SPAR’s call to their customers to join them in eradicating pollution makes the race’s partnership with #runclean a perfect pairing! Besides individual runners, several other running events – including the SPAR Women’s Challenge – have already officially signed up with the campaign, pledging to promote #runclean. Western Province Athletics, one of the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge race partners, has recently become the first athletic province to officially endorse the #runclean campaign, and has asked all races in the province to add the #runclean logo to their entry forms, and work with the province to improve their litter management plans.

10 WAY FOR YOU TO #RUNCLEAN

01

Keep in mind that many runners go for long training runs without carrying any water, but suddenly in a race they cannot get through 3km without water. You don’t need to drink so much water when running, especially for shorter

distances. So often runners take more than one sachet and toss one or more unused satchets or only use half the water in the sachets before throwing them away. That not only wastes precious water, but also means more waste lying in the road.

08

02

09

Carry your own water in a hydration backpack or water bottle belt, so that you don’t need to use the sachets.

03

When you do use the sachets, don’t drop them (or other refuse) on the road – always look for a bin. Come on, moving a few metres towards a bin really won’t cost you that much time.

04

In fact, you don’t even need to throw the sachets away… You could carry your rubbish till you can throw it away, even if that is at the finish. Just stick the empty plastic sachets in a pocket, or in the waistband of your shorts, because carrying a few pieces of ultra lightweight plastic will not weigh you down that much!

On windy days, make doubly sure your litter is well disposed of in bins or rubbish bags so that it doesn’t get blown all over the place, thus making it even less likely that it will be picked up by the clean-up crew. If you see fellow runners littering, try to diplomatically suggest a cleaner attitude going forward, but avoid getting into an argument. Even better, volunteer for water table duty at a local race and help clean up the mess afterwards. That will make you think twice about tossing your sachet next time.

10

Lastly, make a point of being a cleaner runner by promoting a no littering rule, not only in your own behaviour, but also in your social media comments and interaction with fellow runners. Include #runclean in your Tweets and Facebook posts.

05

If your running kit does not have one, make your own pocket by sewing on your front provincial licence number with the upper edge left loose, to form a pocket in which you can carry rubbish to the next bin or the finish.

06

If you simply must drop a sachet in the road, try to at least do so within easy distance of the water tables, in demarcated litter areas. That way the clean-up crew can quickly, easily and safely clean up. Remember, many of these volunteers are not runners, and they are there to support you and help you get to the finish line, not spend hours walking along busy roads to clean up.

Never toss a sachet where it cannot be seen or retrieved by the clean-up crew – especially not into bushes next to the road, into a storm water drain or under parked cars. 2016 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

10km Race

TIMING CHIP ALL 10KM RUNNERS PARTICIPATING IN THE 2016 CAPE TOWN SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE WILL HAVE THEIR RACE TIME RECORDED WITH AN ADVANCED TRACKING CHIP.

A

t this year’s race, the times for runners completing the 10km route will be timed by a disposable chip that will be located on the back of your race number. The chips are included as part of the 10km race fee and will be issued to all 10km race participants as part of their registration packs.

HOW DOES THIS CHIP WORK?

Disposable timing chips will be placed on the back of your race number and are covered by a foam strip. The foam strip prevents water and moisture from affecting the chip signal. Please do not bend or fold your race number as this could affect the antennae and also the signal capability of the chip.

WHERE TO GET YOUR RESULTS

Results will be loaded to the RaceTec website, www.racetec.co.za, on the 17th of April at 17:00. For all result queries please log your query on www.racetec. co.za/profile/query-my-result/. The 10km results will also appear in a special race supplement in Die Burger on 25 April.

TAKE NOTE!

Please do not remove the foam strip. You will not receive a result should you wear your race number and chip incorrectly.

GET YOUR COLOUR ROUTE WRISTBAND! Participants for each race category will be given a different colour wrist band to wear at this year’s race. The wristband colours will be as follows: 10KM RUNNERS LIME GREEN 10KM WALKERS RED 5KM FUN RUN AQUA BLUE

Look out for your matching colour holding pens at the start of the race which will be decorated with balloons and posters in colours corresponding to your wristband.

ubbles and Bordeaux’s, tannins and terroir, dewdrops on vines and unbelievable taste sensations – I simply remember my favourite things, and then I feel moved to record and share the experience. Some of my favourite wine encounters in the Cape have involved long tables, whereas others have been moments where I’ve found myself enamoured by unexpected taste sensations.

best winemakers in the Cape, in one room is like watching the Great Renaissance Masters hand-pick and display their paintings. Another excellent lesson in Mastery is a tasting with Wade Bales, the founder of The Wade Bales Wine Society in Constantia.

My baby sister and I took a road trip to The Elim Wine Festival last year. We woke up to a rainbow among the tall trees at Doornbosch Guest Farm and Country Cottages. Our journey rekindled my love for Strandveld Estate’s The Navigator. It also introduced me to The Drift Wines’ ‘The Gift Horse’. Our voyage to South Africa’s Southern Most vineyards also introduced me to ‘The Giant Periwinkle’ Chenin Blanc, which if we’re being candid, pairs phenomenally with Sashimi.

BEST IN TRY THIS WITH FOOD

Olive Hamiltion Russell’s background in food technology proves itself to be sunshine on a plate, all year long. Her book, A Year on a Cape Wine Estate is the gentle balance between gourmand and home-comforts. She shared a panna cotta with me that proved itself to be the ‘hemel’ in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Hermanus is home to Creation Wines pairings that are as much a feast for Twitter as they are for the diner. Further from Creation, but just as heavenly, Fleur-du-Cap offers a salt-and-wine pairing, of its elite, Unfiltered range that delightfully stills the senses at Die Bergkelder, in Stellenbosch. JC Le Roux, in Devon Valley provides a deluxe pairing of bubbles and bite-sized magic that effervesces in every way. At the Restaurant at Grande Provence in Franschhoek, Chef Darren Badenhorst’s prowess on a plate is a thrilling testament to The Estate’s commitment to excellence. Tastings at Maison Estate are always a delight – where guests encounter the tangible taste of ‘cheescake in your mouth’ as they pair cheese, wine and biltong.

BEST IN “I NEVER EXPECTED IT”

Lawyer, Mphumeleli Ndlangisa quietly asserts, “I want people to have a revelation when they taste these wines.” ‘These wines’ refer to the Magna Carta Pinot Noir and Chenin Blanc that the cowboy winemaker recently made and self-funded. The Elgin-grown wines are made naturally, with the philosophy that low alcohol and little intervention result in wines that are bound to leave an impression on those that they encounter. There are also Garagistes like Blackwater Wine. Francois Haasbroek has produced the exceptional Blackwater Noir MMXII which is composed of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. Similarly, Duncan Savage’s Savage Red 2011 is an intriguing blend of three cultivars. My most recent surprise has been Marvelous Wines, encountered during Tuning the Vines’ ‘Inner City Wine Route’.

W

hile I count myself lucky to call Cape Town “home”, living in such a vibrant and cosmopolitan city comes with its own set of challenges – as we’re simply overwhelmed by choice. Whether you’re looking for a spot to enjoy brunch, a casual meal or a special night out, there are endless options for every palate and budget. Tempted to try somewhere new? I’ve included my top four must-visit spots in the city.

BRUNCH AT STEENBERG’S BISTRO SIXTEEN82

A lazy brunch is one of my ultimate weekend treats – and Steenberg’s Bistro Sixteen82 is the perfect place to indulge. While they offer a variety of breakfast and brunch dishes, I’d recommend their Eggs Benedict (a steal at R78): two perfectly poached eggs, served on a potato and herb rosti, covered with silky smooth hollandaise, served alongside a slow roasted tomato. As if that isn’t enough,

it comes with a slab of home-cured pork belly bacon. I’d suggest going all out and enjoying it with a glass of their 1682 Chardonnay MCC.

A WANDER THROUGH KIRSTENBOSCH’S FOOD AND CRAFT MARKET

While the botanical gardens are famous in their own right, we recently discovered their food and craft market, which takes place on the last Sunday of the month. Taking place around the stone cottages on Rhodes Drive, you’ll find everything from second-hand books, to local crafts and curios – and, of course, delicious food. From nachos to pizza, pulled beef rolls to Belgian waffles – it’s Sunday lunch, with a twist. I’d recommend making a day of it, and enjoying one of the garden’s Sunset Concerts afterwards. 2016 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

LUNCH AT DEL MAR MODERN MEXICAN

A new addition to the Camps Bay strip, Del Mar serves Mexican food like you’ve never seen it before. Not a cheese-laden nacho in site, expect elegant, refined flavours and incredible attention to detail. Offering a comprehensive menu, the food is broken up into various categories – with ceviche holding its own, followed by antojitos (“little cravings”, plates of local Mexican street food), para la mesa (essential accompaniments for the table), platos principales and more. It gets my vote for the best Mexican food in Cape Town.

DINNER AT LA COLOMBE

If you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion, or simply want an unforgettable night of fine dining, then La Colombe should be top of your list. Led by Scot Kirton – the 2015 Eat Out Chef of the Year – the team of La Colombe serves exquisite cuisine, in a warm and unpretentious atmosphere. We’re fortunate to eat out fairly often, and I can safely say that I enjoyed the best meal of my life at La Colombe – no small achievement.

the rustic, homely decor inside and in the garden is forever changing and inspiring. I always order an extra side of their insanely delicious carb free toast with lots of butter! Keeping to the southern suburbs, Madison Boutique in Constantia Village Courtyard is my go-to for international designer gear from the likes of YAYA and Metalicus to my absolute favourite Karien Belle Poetry Scarves handmade in India. Slip into a pair of stylish and ever so comfy House Of Cinnamon pumps in luxe leather and easy to wear prints and colours. The Water Shed at the V&A Waterfront houses all my favourite artisanal local designers, while up the road on a buzzing Bree Street, are Kirsten Goss and Missibaba for that larger than life fashion piece; from once off, designer bags and accessories to edgy metallic jewels and colourful cocktail pieces. You just have to own a piece from each! My favourite spot to browse and just get lost in, is Moroccan Warehouse, corner of Commercial and Buitenkant St. Find something special for your home from leather pouffes to hand painted

Their new bamboo infinity scarf is a winter must have. Super soft, versatile and cosy! Check out the dirty pink colour! Magnificent! You've certainly not seen it all until you've browsed the creative quarter that is Woodstock! From The Woodstock Exchange to the Old Biscuit Mill there's loads of local talent to be experienced. Do pop into one of my favourites, The Prestwich Collection. I just snapped up a fabulous beaded Henriette Botha necklace I can't wait to wear on the streets of Dublin. THE LIFESTYLE GURU My Cape Town By: Fiona Rossiter author of Inspired Living

I

am a Capetonian through and through and even though I have travelled internationally, Cape Town and South Africa will always be my home. As I said to someone recently, once Cape Town is in your blood, no matter where you go, it will always draw you back! There really is so much to see and do in the Cape! Exploring the area can be quite overwhelming at first glance but my advice is to deal with it in bite sized chunks. Most of all do the things you enjoy and don’t just follow a prescriptive travel guide. I always find it best to get the inside scoop from locals, especially when visiting a place for the first time. Inspired Living, where I share my many travel and leisure experiences, has in essence become my Insiders Guide to the Cape. Blogging has afforded me many wonderful travel and leisure opportunities locally. Via my travels and adventures, I have discovered so many hidden gems and amazing places. Naturally there are a multitude of experiences in Cape Town, which nobody should miss out on. Visiting places such as Table Mountain, Cape Point, Kirstenbosch Gardens (our National Botanical Gardens) and one of my favourites – the Winelands, are a definite must! Taking time however, to discover “more” of what the Cape has to offer, is vital! Exploring areas like Riebeek Kasteel, Majiesfontien, Swellendam and Citrusdal, has really opened my eyes to how truly amazing this region is. Food and wine have become a bit of an obsession of mine and I love to explore the culinary or foodie side of any place I visit. One of my favourite activities is trying different wine tasting or wine pairing experiences. Great finds of late include Myoga’s 7 Course Tasting Menu, Avondale Wine Tasting & Lunch Platters, The Pinotage Root, as well as Org De 32

Rac’s chocolate and wine pairing, to name but a few. Cape Town is definitely well known for its trendy restaurants and bars. The strip in Camps Bay, as well as Cape Town CBD, have become a hive of hip and happening spots. Gin Bars and Micro Breweries have become a huge part of the urban culture in the Cape. I have also found that eating out has become more of an “experience”, rather than simply a “meal”. When I am not venturing off to places unknown, you will find me either going for a run up Chapmans Peak, whipping up a delicious meal for my family or enjoying a braai with friends. I really value quality downtime and think that there is nothing

better than a chilled evening in with good food and an amazing bottle of wine. Cape Town is an awesome place to explore whether you are a visitor or a tourist in your own city. Don’t be afraid to peel away the layers that constitute this wonderful land! Whether for a simple stroll on the beach, a hike in the mountain, zip lining in the forest, wine tasting among the vineyards or a gastronomic experience, Cape Town and it’s surrounds are beckoning!

HERMANUSPIETERSFONTEIN

Sheep tells a Real Story – was it not for these woolly little creatures no one would know the story of Hermanuspietersfontein. Overberg farmers of the early 1800’s preferred their children to be schooled in Dutch, the forerunner of Afrikaans. They paid farm teacher Hermanus Pieters in sheep, which grazed at a spring under the Milkwood trees near the sea. In 1855, long after his passing, the village was founded in his honour, only for the postmaster in 1902 to shorten the name to Hermanus. 150 years later the past is brought to life with the naming of their cellar brand Hermanuspietersfontein and it was decided a sheep should tell this modern day tale. In memory of Hermanus Pieters and the passion of the people of the 1800’s the estate has committed to keeping their wine names and labels exclusively Afrikaans. Visit the estate for tastings on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00. On the weekends, visit their Saturday market from 09:00 to 13:00. Visit www.hpf1855.co.za for more information. 42

WHALE MUSEUM

Hermanus became known as the heart of the Whale Route and the museum has one of the best close up whale watching spots in town as well as a telescope. Well-written and informative installations, a photographic exhibition and a suspended full-size southern right whale skeleton act as a window into the world of these magnificent mammals. Find out how the whales compare to each other, and to dinosaurs, elephants, cows and humans in terms of size. You’ll also meet whales’ fellow travellers. Barnacles and whale lice attach themselves to whales’ bodies and catch a ride through the seas. Whale lice aren’t lice at all but are, in fact, tiny crustaceans. Migratory patterns of whales are examined, shedding light on why whales travel to Hermanus from June to December. You can also find out what certain kinds of whale behaviour means. Terms like sailing, lobtailing, breaching, porpoising and spyhopping are explained. After your tour, you can head outside to see the behaviour in action. BREE STREET STUNNER!

FOLK COFFEE ANTHROPOLOGY Folk Coffee Anthropology has been described as an actualisation of the cultural space that is created when coffee, food, people, and place come together. At Folk Coffee they believe that eating and drinking at a restaurant is no longer about just grabbing some grub! The idea is that we should interact with our environment in such a way that we imprint ourselves upon it and it, in turn, defines part of our identity. Essentially, eating and drinking is a cultural experience. Folk Coffee is Espresso Concepts' flagship and retail outlet situated at the top of Bree Street. With ample parking it's a great place for a relaxed luncheon, quick breakfast or after work catch up drink. They serve hearty, wholesome meals that are always freshly prepared. The world-best beans are roasted each day and your coffee served just how you like it. For more information, visit www.folkcoffee.co.za or call 021 276 1795. 58

COFFEE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

BROWNIES & DOWNIES Brownies&downieS Cape Town is a training centre for people with intellectual disabilities and a vessel that is creating change and acceptance in the South African culture. Special needs young adults are trained to be employable in the hospitality, service and retail sectors. This is achieved in a coffee shop and lunchroom that is open to the general public. It was started in 2010 in Veghel, the Netherlands, as a result of an idea that two friends had. The one a chef (Teun Horck), the other working at a special needs school (Thijs Swinkels). They realised over a time that not many people with disabilities were employed in the hospitality sector, and decided to change this. Using a combination of high quality food and staff members with an intellectual disability in their employ, they created a relatively new concept in the Netherlands and surrounding European countries. Since those early days, they have grown by close to 30 stores in the Netherlands, and Cape Town is the first Brownies&downieS to open abroad, and also the first to open as a non-profit organisation. Wendy Vermeulen took it upon herself to introduce the concept to South Africa. The coffee shop is an open area, spacious and flooded with natural lighting. It provides for a soothing and vibey atmosphere amongst the hustle and bustle of every-day life in Long Street. Blue and white colour schemes soften a mostly lightly-wooded interior, and a lone pillar near the entrance gives a human touch to a positive and natural aura. Their special needs trainees and staff are often greeting patrons with their welcoming smiles and eagerness to serve. You can often see them jesting with each other, dancing, or making jokes amongst themselves and the patrons whilst going about their work. Female LEADERSHIP TODAY FINDING A THIRD WAY TO LEAD By: Mary Ovenstone

IT HAS ONLY BEEN SINCE AROUND THE 1980S THAT LARGE NUMBERS OF WOMEN HAVE BEGUN TO FILL MANAGEMENT ROLES IN THE BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WORK WORLD IN SOUTH AFRICA. THE WAY BUSINESS IS CONDUCTED WAS DESIGNED BY MEN — WHO AFTER ALL GOT THERE FIRST — IN ACCORDANCE WITH THEIR PRAGMATIC THINKING, EXPEDIENT PROBLEM-SOLVING, AND TOP-DOWN MANAGEMENT STYLE. THEIR COMPETITIVE AND AGGRESSIVE EDGE, PERFECTLY NATURAL TO THE MALE BRAIN, HAS PRESENTED THE FEMALE BRAIN WITH A CHALLENGE.

S

o far most women have met that challenge by either acting and leading like men – in order to be taken seriously – or opting to fulfil the more feminine gender stereotypes – in order to be liked. The former option has often given rise to a kind of bluntness and hard expression that men call ‘bitchy’ and the latter softer approach often causes men to write us off. Both experiences have all too frequently led women to disillusionment, burnout, or restless job hopping. At a certain point in their career, women often give up the struggle to be heard and to make a difference. In many years of coaching female leaders in small to large businesses I have sought to explore what I call a ‘Third Way’ that optimizes female thinking and leadership styles yet assists women to communicate effectively into the male-designed workplace. This interest led me to study and research the neuroscientific

difference between the male and female brain for my Master’s thesis. I wanted to know how we are actually different – not just how society tells us we should be – and how we can optimize our real strengths. When women choose to think and lead like women we begin to utilize the strengths that we have developed and have been embedded in the female brain over millennia. After all, since the beginning of time we have managed households and homesteads, raised and educated children, healed, nourished and led others while men were off hunting, conducting wars sometimes for years on end and building the structures that make up our society. We have been terrific managers and leaders in our own right. In the 21st century many of us want to develop careers outside of the home, and our brains have undeniable strengths developed over centuries, that we can bring into the workplace. When we are encouraged to optimize our natural characteristics, we lead others in a variety of

life-enhancing ways. We often empower others to excel and feel fully-utilized. We break down silos and encourage collaboration. Women love to make a difference in people’s lives and often think laterally and are innovative. We naturally engage in whole-brained analytical/ intuitive thinking to solve multifaceted contemporary problems. We employ strategic and complex decision-making that takes into consideration the myriad of factors from which our female brains are designed to make meaning. When women are allowed to work flexi-time, we still get mountains of work done while creating better work/life balance. And we do all this while still bearing the largest share of running our homes and raising our children. More women are rising to high-level decision-making roles worldwide. 2015 research shows that the companies with more women on EXCOs and boards make more money than companies without female leaders. In fact, a Catalyst report showed that companies with women in 64

2016 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

top management roles outperform those without women at the top by delivering 34% greater return to shareholders. Recently Syracuse University looked at 140 studies of board performance in 35 countries. Their research confirmed that having more women on a board of directors does improve a company’s financial performance. “With more women on boards, a wider range of insight, perspectives and experiences are brought to bear on the issues a board faces. It improves how a board makes decisions.” With research like that, women can no longer be considered optional extras! So feel encouraged by this. Relish the newfound diversity in South Africa, treating each other with curiosity and respect. Develop your own innate strength and resilience. Learn to handle your internal fluctuations by processing your feelings and by not taking your inner verbal narratives too seriously. Take advantage of female resilience to stress and get used to continual change. We are terrific just the way we are!
