25 Years OF RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
THIS YEAR THE CAPE TOWN SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY. THE RACE ORGANISERS, TOP RUNNERS AND RACE PARTNERS REFLECT ON THE LAST 25 YEARS AND WHAT THE RACE MEANS TO THEM AND TO CAPE TOWN. We at SPAR realise that sport creates a sense of community. Community is very important to us, and SPAR is committed to serving the communities in which we trade. One of SPAR’s proudest sports associations is the SPAR Women’s Challenge. This annual event began in 1992 and was initially held in Durban and Johannesburg with Cape Town, PE and Pretoria following suit in 1993. It is with great excitement and sense of pride that we look forward to our 25th race in Cape Town. I wish each and every woman taking part in this race all the best. Whatever your level of fitness, or personal goals, may you meet the challenge you have set for yourself. Even if it is just to have fun! We are here to support you along the way.
COLIN PATTERSON,
MARKETING DIRECTOR SPAR WESTERN CAPE

Celebrating 25 years of the race is special. This year, we ‘the family’ who make up the SPAR brand – this includes the owners of SPAR stores throughout the Western Cape, want to celebrate the many women who truly make this the city’s most beautiful road race.
ELSABE VAN ZYL,
ADVERTISING MANAGER SPAR WESTERN CAPE
I have been involved with the Cape Town race more or less since the first one held at Hamiltons in Green Point, seen it move to Canal Walk, Newlands cricket ground, Belville and return ‘home’ to this incredible setting. Amazing how the race has grown in numbers and popularity over the 25 years. I could never quite believe that runners got up so early, till I experienced the early morning beauty of this race!
ANNE TAYLOR, TAYLOR TALK PR The SPAR Women’s Challenge brings women from all walks of life together for a fun filled day, with a good cause attached to it. Heart FM has partnered with the race for the last 11 years. One of our core values as a station is collaboration and we are proud to be associated with the SPAR Women’s Challenge, not only because of the magnitude of the event, but because through this initiative we are able to give back to the community through the contribution that the race makes to Operation Smile. There is absolutely nothing better than to see the smile on a child’s face – which we had first-hand experience of during our 16 Days For Youth campaign last year. This year the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge is celebrating its 25th anniversary – a very impressive milestone. We’ve seen the race grow over the years to be one of – if not the biggest – run/walk event in the Mother City. Congratulations and we look forward to the next 25 years with you!

DO I NEED TO WEAR MY RACE NUMBERS? Yes, two numbers for the 10km, one on the front and the other on the back. One number for the 5km to be worn on the front. A disposable timing chip will be used for the 10km only, which is attached to your FRONT race number. Be sure to wear the race number with the tear off strip on the front of your shirt and not the back. Please do not use any other timing chip, as it may interfere with this system. No chip means that your time will not be recorded. Wear your official SPAR t-shirt or (if you must) your club colours.

ON THE PATH TO CHANGE
FIVE KILOMETRES, TEN KILOMETRES AND MANY MORE KILOMETRES HAVE BEEN TROD BY POWERFUL WOMEN ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA AS THEY STRIDE OUT IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. ONE SUCH WOMAN IS OPERATION SMILE VOLUNTEER FUNEKA CELE, A RETIRED NURSE WHO CONTINUES TO WALK THE ROADS AND PATHS OF THE RURAL EASTERN CAPE AS SHE BRINGS LASTING CHANGE TO HER COMMUNITY.

F
uneka Cele’s phone starts ringing at just about the same time she is half way through her first cup of tea. It’s a radio station that wants to talk to her about the work she does with Operation Smile, 30 minutes later she finally has a moment to slip out of her fluffy slippers and into her trademark yellow hat and begin a day of advocacy, rural village visits and ultimately life-changing conversations and intercessions. The name Funeka Cele is one that is heard often in the Operation Smile South Africa office. “Ask Funeka, she can help,” or “Funeka helped me reach those patients”; a hundred different versions of the same inflection.
We have planned to meet a group of former and current patients whose lives Funeka has affected and when we arrive at St. Patrick’s Hospital there are already folks waiting for us. Patients and guardians have come from around the Eastern Cape with one mom and daughter travelling a 500km round trip just to pay their respects. “If you wake me at 3am I will say I know Sister Funeka. She is somebody who loves people and has got love. She is doing this [advocacy] because of love,” says Samkelise Wayise. Samkelise has travelled over an hour on unpaved roads to bring her nephew, Unathi. Unathi, 12, is a shy boy still developing his own voice a year after Funeka helped 14

deliver him to the Operation Smile mission where he received cleft palate surgery. Before the surgery he found it hard to speak in class and the teachers wanted him to attend what they euphemistically called a ‘special’ school. Since the surgery he has been able to participate more fully in school and life, and it’s in a braver, more confident voice that Unathi tells Funeka that there are some neighbours in his district that may also have cleft palates. By her example of care, she inspires others to become advocates. A nurse for over 30 years, Funeka first came into contact with Operation Smile in 2008 when she was approached by a visiting Operation Smile volunteer conducting a cross-country awareness campaign. “I was still really young and a bit nervous but Funeka embraced me and the organisation and basically took me in,” says OSSA regional director Tamlin Abrahams. It’s dark as the car stops outside Funeka’s home but the light of her mobile phone sends out its own Morse code as it flashes at every text message: a worried mother has heard Funeka’s radio interview and found enough money to send a text asking for help. The desperation is palpable even in the shortened format. Help is needed, Funeka is there. “He will be fine,” she writes.
I was still really young and a bit nervous but Funeka embraced me and the organisation and basically took me in... As she exits the car and heads into her home I can’t help but wonder out loud what the name Funeka means. She smiles, “The one who is needed.”
ABOUT OPERATION SMILE Operation Smile is an international medical charity whose global network of thousands of credentialed medical volunteers from more than 80 countries is dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children from more than 60 countries. Since its founding in 1982, Operation Smile has provided more than 240,000 free surgical procedures for children and young adults born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities. To build long-term sufficiency in resource poor environments, Operation Smile trains doctors and local medical professionals in its partner countries so they are empowered to treat their local communities and help others around the world. Operation Smile also donates medical equipment and supplies and provides year-round medical treatment through its worldwide centres. Operation Smile expanded its reach to South Africa in 2006. Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) has since inception conducted nearly 60 missions across Africa and currently serves as the regional hub for Central and Southern Africa. Their work includes multiple missions to South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Madagascar, Ghana, Malawi and the DRC. While OSSA continues to expand its footprint the organization is proud to look back on over 7000 lives changed and look forward to changing untold more in the future. Obsession WITH RACE MEDALS
Runners, it seems, love them! THE CAPE TOWN RACE TURNS 25 THIS YEAR AND WE HAVE BEEN SPENDING A LOT OF TIME REFLECTING ON ALL OUR FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT THE RACE THAT HAVE COME AND GONE OVER THE YEARS. ONE THING THAT HAS NOT CHANGED IS THAT EVERYONE WHO THE RUNS THE RACE LOVES RECEIVING A MEDAL AT THE END. LET’S LOOK AT THE PRIZED MEDALS, AND WHY WE ARE SO OBSESSED WITH THESE BERIBBONED ARTEFACTS.
T
he SPAR Women’s Challenge races run throughout the country are absolutely about the lovelies that run or walk them, whatever shape, size or level of fitness, and SPAR goes all out at each race to make the women who enter happy. From goodie bags to finishing medals, and everything in-between, it is important that the women feel celebrated. But as much as we at the SPAR Women’s Challenge like to be at the forefront of things, we did not invent the race medal. Our friends, the Greeks, who staged the ancient Games in Olympia from 776 BC through to 393 AD, the frontrunner to the modern day Olympics, were in fact the inventors of the medal. The first modern Olympics were held centuries later in Athens in 1896. The gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals for first, second and third places were first used at the 1904 Summer Olympics. At the 1896 event, silver was awarded to winners and bronze to runnersup, while in 1900 other prizes were given, not medals. Medals at the Cape Town race have 18

taken various shapes over the years. Initially the trophy for the winner of the race was the bronzed running shoe of Elana Meyer, winner of the first Cape Town race in 1993. Race medals then took on the shape of the shoe. When the Grand Prix series for top runners was launched ten years ago, the medal featuring our beloved icon of a woman runner with wings was born. Knowing that most women love jewellery of sorts, organisers of the 2016 Cape Town race decided to substitute the finisher’s medal with a lovely beaded achievement bracelet. “We decided not to give out medals at our race because we wanted something different,” says Elsabe van Zyl, advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape. “We wanted it to be something pretty and wearable, instead of something that goes in a drawer or on display. And the beaded bracelets supported a charitable cause.” The race medal, though, it seems is more entrenched in the SPAR Women’s Challenge experience than we realized and Elsabe and her team, from the
feedback they received, realized that the race finishers love receiving medals! So the good news is the medal is back! Earn and then hold onto yours, a cherished memento of the 25th Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge.
RACE MEDAL FUN FACTS The idea of wearing medals as necklaces may have caught on after recipients of "table medals" (essentially large coins) began to drill holes in them for cords or ribbons, making them suitable for looping around the neck The London Marathon's first medal, in 1981, was coin-like – literally a token of appreciation. At the inaugural Boston Marathon, in 1897, the race gave a medal to all the finishers. All 10 of them!
MY race
SO WHAT MAKES A MEDAL DESIRABLE?
Maybe you don’t race for the bling (even though you have a few medals you love!). These are some of the reasons that Amanda Brooks (author of RUN to the Finish) cites:
01 Size matters (naughty birds!) Uniqueness – we are drawn
medals that are out of the 02 toordinary.
03
Medals speak to your emotions – it is not always about shape and size, but about the memories of a particular race.
– yes, we do want 04 Collectability to show off!

WHETHER YOU HAVE BEEN TRAINING FOR MONTHS IN ANTICIPATION OF BLASTING THROUGH THE 10KM OR JUST PLAN TO TAKE IT EASY ON THE 5KM ROUTE – WHAT YOU DO THE DAY BEFORE THE RACE CAN HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON YOUR PERFORMANCE AND ENJOYMENT ON RACE DAY. HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR BEING IN TIP TOP SHAPE ON 2 APRIL 2017.
0 5 Tips
FAST RACE PREP
Plan your meals. You should not experiment with new meals or nutritional approaches right before a race. If you have been training extensively then the nutritional approach that you used for training should be adequate for race day as well. You should plan to eat a healthy and energising breakfast in the morning, and take an extra snack with you to eat just before the start of the race. Once the race is over, you’ll find lots of edible goodies around the stadium for sale – or enjoy a packed picnic with family and friends.

Make sure you know where you are going. Not the race route – but the race itself! Search for directions to the race venue ahead of time and be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get there, find parking, and make your way into the venue. Watching 21 000 ladies racing past your car as you struggle to make your way to Cape Town Stadium is not much fun!
Prepack your gear. Worried about forgetting something important like your race number? Don’t take that chance! Lay out your race clothes the night before and make sure that the race number with the timing chip on it is fixed to the FRONT of your shirt. Pack your tog bag with all the essentials – don’t forget a snack, towel, bottle of water and of course – sunscreen! If you need more advice on what to have with you on race day, turn to page 52 for our definitive guide on your race day must haves.
Stay hydrated! Drink extra water the day before the race and on the morning of the race as well. Avoid ingesting excessive amounts of diuretics on the morning of the race (alcohol, caffeine) and keep an eye out for the water points along the race route. 22
2017 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE
Dress for success. Make sure that your running shoes are still in good condition to avoid injury during the race. And as always ladies – make sure you’ve got a good sports bra to provide that support you need – as you cross the finish line, the only bounce should be in your step!

Dessert Takes On a New Twist Inventive pairings have become par for the course at Clos Malverne. Thanks to the inventive and fearless approach of executive chef, Nadia Louw Smith, this estate’s restaurant has become known for living up to its slogan “The food and wine experience” – and as the slogan suggests, they’re all about exciting food and wine combinations. Living up to this notion, Clos Malverne were the first wine estate in Stellenbosch to offer a unique tasting experience in the form of their ice cream and wine pairing. It has since become one of their signature pairings with seasonal, hand-made frozen delicacies.
CLOS MALVERNE’S ICE-CREAM AND WINE TASTING Offering four combinations, each more tempting than the last you will be guided through a journey of flavours starting with a lighter touch in the combination of salted coconut, lime and white chocolate ice cream paired with Clos Malverne Sauvignon Blanc. This pairing captures the essence of summer with a tangy
twist. The sweetness of the coconut and chocolate is balanced by the acidity in the wine while the added salt reveals a complex set of fruity flavours. Ending off with the most decadent of them all is the dark chocolate, coffee meringue and caramel ice cream paired with Clos Malverne Le café Pinotage. Invoking the feeling of a summer thunderstorm, this pairing is an explosion of dark flavours, with lightning bolts of tangy sweetness. Clos Malverne’s ice-cream and wine pairing costs R75 per person and booking is essential. For more information and bookings, call 021 865 2022.
Not Just for Tea and Coffee It turns out that pairing biscotti with wine instead of your caffeine fix of choice is heavenly! Continually striving to be innovative and unique in their approach, De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp can now add a Biscotti and Wine Experience to its repertoire of exciting offerings. This concept already has a following in Italy and the idea of bringing it to South Africa originated with wine lover and gourmand, Denise Lindley, after tasting the De Krans Moscato whilst enjoying a leisurely lunch at De Krans’ Bistro. Immediately she was transported to the restaurant, Galuppi, situated on the island of Burano, Venice, where she had previously enjoyed a meal. The memory which stood out the most was that for dessert she was persuaded to enjoy their Vin Santo (an Italian dessert wine) with Burano Biscotti. The pairing was a match made in biscotti heaven – and now you can visit heaven too!
DE KRANS WINES BISCOTTI PAIRING
De Krans took this innovative idea one step further and “designed” a range of biscotti to pair perfectly with some of the wines and port-style wines in the De Krans range. The result was mind blowing as the biscotti flavours are truly unique. Think Pinotage Rosé and a mixed herb biscotti; Moscato and classic biscotti, or Touriga Nacional with biltong biscotti. The pièce de résistance is the Cape Vintage paired with the allspice choc-chip biscotti. Leisure tastings are available at a cost of R50 for five pairings, or try a tutored tasting for 10 people by appointment for R70. Call 044 213 3314 for more information. 2017 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

Have Your Cake and Pair It If there is anything better than indulging in your all-time favourite treat, it’s indulging in two of your all-time favourite treats. Everyone loves a good cupcake and a nice glass of wine, and perhaps you have enjoyed both simultaneously. Let’s be honest, there are few pleasures in life that can’t be matched by adding wine to the mix. At Delheim Estate, they believe that cupcakes make people smile and wine in moderation enlivens any affair, therefore pairing the two can be the perfect pick-meup indulgence that pampers the palate and the mood.
DELHEIM’S SWEET INDULGENCE
Delheim spreads the love with four decadent cupcake and wine pairings. Their signature foursome includes an exotic pomegranate cupcake matched with their ever-popular Pinotage Rosé for a fun, fruity and fresh start. A Rooibos cupcake infused with lemon and topped with cream cheese and honey icing, is paired with the Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment. A pumpkin and vanilla cupcake infused with star anise, cinnamon and nutmeg, and topped with
Chocolate and Wine Transcend diced pickled pumpkin is perfectly paired with Delheim’s Pinotage. A traditional African Makataan cupcake, festooned with makataan (wild melon) syrup icing, shares the spotlight with the Gewürztraminer to end off the pairing. The cupcake and wine pairing costs just R75 per person, is on offer seven days a week at the cellardoor between 9h00 and 16h30, and all cupcakes are freshly baked each day. Bookings are preferable and can be made at cellardoor@delheim.com.
As if you haven’t been doing this yourself for years already? Up the ante and be guided by an experienced sommelier to really unlock flavour and find a state of true bliss. Many say that wine and chocolate pairings can’t be done – mainly due to the fact that wine and chocolate each carry their own inherent intensities which could cause a power play on the palate, causing flavours to either overwhelm or neutralise each other. With some experimentation and the careful matching of sweetness, texture, style and weight, however, Constantia Glen has engineered a partnership between certain chocolates and their red wines that will seriously stir up your senses.
CONSTANTIA GLEN’S WINE AND CHOCOLATE EXPERIENCE
Start with a pairing of 60% dark chocolate and Constantia’s Saddle where this lighter chocolate and lighter bodied wine create a play on levels of sweetness and the minute influence of toast. The milk chocolate in this pairing does away with simple perceptions of straight forward, ripe, sweet fruit, and brings to the surface a completely different, fascinating dimension of lively lime zest and violets, and an extended, refreshingly long acidity. It only gets better from there with increased intensity delivering a fruity explosion with the 70% dark chocolate and Constantia Glen THREE pairing and a bold ending with the pairing of 80% dark chocolate and Constantia Glen FIVE. It takes an inventive wine estate to go a step further and pair the complex flavours of Turkish delight with some of the best wines the Cape region has to offer. Lourensford Wine Estate located in Somerset West, has created a truly delight-ful wine tasting experience that matches up the unique pairing of Turkish delight and wine.
LOURENSFORD’S DELIGHTFUL PAIRING
The Turkish delight served on the estate is actually hand crafted to perfectly match the flavours of four Lourensford wines. The first wine in this pairing is the MCC Brut. The rich, biscuity allure and the yeasty flavours of freshly baked bread in this wine are enhanced by the subtle flavours of almond Turkish delight. This is followed by a traditional rose Turkish delight, paired with the pink MCC Rosé. Lourensford’s Limited Release Chardonnay’s citrus flavours are mirrored in the next pairing with an orange Turkish delight. Their unique Honey Liqueur (made from Lourensford’s own bees), paired with ginger Turkish delight forms the perfect ending to this delightful pairing experience. The full Turkish delight and wine pairing costs R65 per person. For more information, or to make a booking, email winetastings@lourensford.co.za or call +27 21 847 2300 .

The People Whether it’s the fresh sea breeze or something else in the air, we’re not sure but Capetonians are the most genuinely pleasant people you will ever meet. It’s true what they say; “If you meet a friendly person in Jo’burg, they’re probably from Cape Town!”
The Jazz Clubs Bring your love of jazz back to life and do some late night jamming in Cape Town’s finest jazz clubs, such as Straight No Chaser. Small and intimate, it’s the place to go for jazz lovers to feel loved.
Weekend Markets Don’t spend your whole Saturday in the mall – get some sunlight and fresh air while doing retail therapy at one of the many markets Cape Town has to offer on weekends. From arts and crafts to fresh produce, you won’t leave empty handed!
The Views When it comes to views in Cape Town, you are really spoiled for choice. City lights? Check. Beautiful oceans? Check. Majestic mountains? Check. What more could you ask for?
Wine, Wine, Wine! Cape Town is a wine lover’s dream! It is a world class wine region producing award winning reds, whites and rosés that are sold and loved all over the world. Once you’ve left the city limits, you can barely go 5km without passing a vineyard.
Cheese, Cheese, Cheese! What’s a wine tasting without cheese? The Cape is renowned for producing some of the finest cheeses in the country, arguably the world, and a lot of these farms are also open to the public. 2017 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

The Best Coffee Shop in the World That’s right, the very best coffee shop in the whole world is right here in Cape Town! Steam-punk inspired artisan coffee shop, Truth Coffee Roasting in Buitenkant Street was voted the best from a list of thirteen roasteries around the world – beating out the best shops in France, Vienna, Singapore and Italy.
Street Food Street Food is a phenomenon that is booming all over the world and Cape Town has not been left behind. Food Trucks don’t just sell the usual greasy burger and hotdog anymore. Now you can pretty much choose anything, from Asian Fusion to ‘pap en vleis’ and everything in between.
Bacon on Bree Did someone say bacon? Cape Town’s very own ‘baconporium’, Bacon on Bree is the city’s hottest culinary destination offering breakfasts, salads, lunches and light meals specializing in (you guessed it) bacon.
Penguins! If you’ve never been to the Cape, chances are good that you’ve never seen a penguin in real life. If that applies to you, be prepared to be blown away by places like Betty’s Bay and Boulder’s Beach. Penguins, penguins and more penguins!
Sundowners on Signal Hill Sipping on a perfectly mixed G&T with your friends or family, looking down at one half of the whole city and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean while the setting sun slips into the sea is right at the top of our bucket list.

The Mountain Capetonians are extremely proud of ‘their’ mountain, and rightly so! No one arrives in Cape Town without saying, ‘Look! There’s the mountain!’

Whale Watching During the warmer months of November to March, you only have to stand at select points of the coast or sit outside at beach side restaurants to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants. Southern Right, Killer and Humpback whales are all relatively common to False Bay and Hermanus.
The Colourful Houses of Bo-Kaap On the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre, Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest and the most fascinating residential areas in Cape Town. The romantic cobble-stoned streets that date back to the 18th century are lined with brightly coloured homes in pinks, greens, blues, yellows and more.
The History Being one of the first known settlements in South Africa, Cape Town is a modern city steeped in history. Places such as The Castle of Good Hope, Robben Island or the Bo-Kaap Museum, which tells the tale of slavery in the Cape, are a few examples of places that will take you back to another time.
Lion’s Head at Full Moon Every month at full moon, groups of people gather to climb to the top of Lion’s Head and watch the full moon. If you’re not up for the hours’ hike up the mountain, you can drive as well. Once again, the view is something you’re not likely to see anywhere else.
World Class Art Cape Town Galleries don’t only showcase the best local talent that South Africa has to offer, admired artists from all over the world exhibit their work here too. A Love for Pizza
The beginning of Earthfire Pizza, in the words of owner James Kielczynski, originated from a childhood fascination and excitement to a journey of experimentation and pizza oven development and of course, a love of pizza. When he was younger, James was on a permanent search for authentic pizza and it seemed that a good crispy base was something you could only achieve in a genuine pizzeria. James’ mother had a love and talent for pottery and his father had a brilliant engineering mind and together they invented a fireproof ceramic pizza oven. After fantasizing about what it might be like to own a trailer and convert it into his very own pizza oven, James took the leap in 2012 and Earthfire Pizza was born. 42

A Taste of Asia If you’re looking for street food with a twist, LOTUS Food Truck is your answer. Owners Kyle Miller and Christopher Payne have always been in the food industry. Chris completed his diploma in Advanced Food and Wine and then started travelling. He started working in Australia and after three years, travelled through Asia sampling street food on the way. Kyle grew up in kitchens with his parents owning hotels and restaurants and knew that it was what he wanted for his life too. He spent six months travelling South America and South East Asia, trying all the street food he could find along the way. After working on a yacht in the Mediterranean for two years, Kyle came back to try his own thing. Chris and Kyle both came home to Cape Town, partnered up and found that they both loved Asian food: the simplicity of the ingredients and complexity of big flavours, fresh herbs and lots of fresh vegetables for a healthy kick. They decided to focus on Asian fusion style street food and LOTUS was born. They pride themselves on making everything from scratch right inside the LOTUS Food Truck, even their dipping sauces and dressings. They use only the freshest ingredients and the quality of their food is very important to them. You can expect dishes such as Satay’s, delicious beef short rib, crispy salads and fragrant snacks that will leave you wanting more. To find out where LOTUS will be next, follow them on Facebook or Twitter. If you would like to use LOTUS Food Truck for a private event or function, visit their website on www.lotusfoodtruck.co.za or call them on 072 128 6752.

Comfort Cuisine Jack Rabbit Mobile Kitchen is all about a love of comfort food with a twist. Their menu can be described as street food but made from gourmet ingredients using classic cooking methods. All their food is made from scratch with locally and responsibly sourced ingredients. Marc and Vasti met while studying Hospitality Management. After they finished, Marc became a chef and Vasti was restaurant and bar manager. One day they looked at each other and said, “What if we did it ourselves?” They both resigned from their jobs, jumped straight in and their dream became a reality in February 2015. Marc and Vasti are involved in every aspect of their business and believe in getting personal with their customers. At events, they will be the ones cooking and serving; if you email Jack Rabbit, it will be one of them to reply and they handle all their social media personally. Jack Rabbit believes in keeping with the classics but making them better. Their personal touch is the way they brand their burgers specifically for an event, most often branding their burger buns with the event's name. They find their customers always come back for their specialty Bacon Jalapeno Beef Burger and twice fried Truffle Mayo Fries, especially a favourite at weddings. Marc and Vasti don’t just love food – they live it. Booking them for an event or function means you will get the whole Jack Rabbit experience. IN 2017 WE ARE ENTERING A NEW ERA OF QUIET, SELF-REFLECTIVE LUXURY WHERE INSPIRATION IS DRAWN FROM THE NATURAL WORLD. LEADERS IN THE DÉCOR, DESIGN AND LIFESTYLE INDUSTRY, DECOREX SA HAVE ENCAPSULATED THE 2017 TRENDS IN THEIR THEME ‘MAKE YOUR SPACE YOUR LIVING DREAM’. THEIR EXPERTS UNPACK THESE TRENDS AND PROVIDE ADVICE ON HOW TO TURN THE SPACES IN YOUR HOME INTO A LIVING DREAM.
D
ecorex SA Portfolio Director, Sian Cullingworth, says that the 2017 trends will push us to take time out from the plugged-in world where the constant interaction with electronics surrounds us with a non-stop buzz of mental and physical interference. “By disentangling ourselves from the live-wire environment, we will find solace in our dream living space, a space of nurturing fulfilment where textured furnishings, soothing hues and cosy nooks revitalise the soul and mind, rebooting us for the outside world.”
INTERIOR INSPIRATION
Drawing from the Danish ethos of “hygge”, the 2017 trend embraces a more centred, calm lifestyle where warmth and wellbeing are elevated within our own spaces, allowing us to achieve a continuous sense of comfort and happiness through a form of escapism. In an attempt to create this serene space, natural energy is harnessed through the notion of “biomimicry”. This movement emulates nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies within the human world as a way to seek sustainable solutions. Within the arena of interiors, this translates into natural colours, textures and patterns within the home. Image courtesy of Home Fabrics

COLOUR COMFORTS WHITE ON WHITE

Starting with a clean slate, this crisp look is powered by the desire to switch off, protecting ourselves from the barrage of noise that accompanies the outside world. An indicator of emotional wellbeing, white promotes this notion of replenishing seclusion that connects the 2017 trends. “This ethereal, almost intangible décor echoes an urge to discover the inaccessible while liberating ourselves from manmade conventions and the everyday monotony of life,” said Cullingworth.
BLACK OVER BLACK
On the other side of the spectrum is the movement towards black set upon black differentiated by various textures. While also cleansing, where the white encourages enlightenment the black promotes more introspection and rest. “A somewhat unexpected trend, we are seeing this Noir movement taking hold, although this is the last of black trending so enjoy it while it lasts,” encouraged Cullingworth.
BLACK AND WHITE DECONSTRUCTION
The merging of the two aforementioned colour trends creates an extremely powerful contrast of black and white imagery. This power-clashing trend brings in the rejuvenating white while anchoring the design with mood sustaining black.

Integrating the technological world with that of interiors, the transparent aesthetic highlights the poetic, artistic nature of the electronic world using light, airy materials. “The use of x-ray at airports, ever-watching street cameras and cellphone photography means that our lives, inside and out, are constantly on display,” said Cullingworth. “This trend is a way of embracing the inevitable by accentuating the beauty of the scan, its underlying fragility and transparency.” This trend is given life through the use of x-ray materials, transparent fabrics, floaty silks and sheers which ultimately create a gentle romance that both reveals what lies below while bringing in an optimistic lightness. This harkens to our explorative nature, forever seeking what lies beneath, constantly searching for answers.
URBAN JUNGLE TACTILITY TREND
The smooth finish of the digital world has created a desire for contact with rough, textured elements within our #livingdream which can be achieved through the use of throws, accent cushions, natural woven fabrics and hints of metal within wood. “We crave more than the touch of metal,” explained Cullingworth. “There is an inherent need to feel the various textures that we encounter outdoors. It’s a comforting, revitalising sense that makes us feel whole.” 48
2017 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE
A primal desire to reconnect with the natural world, insulating us from electronics, is seeing elements of nature seeping into the 2017 designs, with dark shades of green set against tan leathers, brass lamps and natural linen. “The creation of an ‘urban jungle’ is bringing about a return to the natural aesthetic for interiors with genuinely rustic wood, natural woven baskets and botanical prints coming through,” said Cullingworth. “This ties in perfectly with the sustainability drive which has taken hold of the interiors’ world where natural, responsibly-sourced materials are taking precedence.”
MY Lifestyle
SPECIAL SPACE
That #livingdream can be found ensconced in one of 2017’s comforting cocoon-like trends, the cosy hovering. Found in both indoor and outdoor hanging swings, these gentle spaces force us to disconnect from the intrusion of technology and find serenity in the freeing motion, yet secure environment of the swing. Undoubtedly connected to a womblike comfort, this trend is an extension of the “cosy nook” movement where we are being encouraged to replenish with meaningful human interaction or a good book. “We’re seeing more relaxed furniture – such as the hanging swings – oversized seats and daybeds which create havens of calm and tranquillity,” said Bloom. “These are spaces for quiet introspection or one-on-one human interaction without the use of gadgets.”

SHOW STOPPING SHAPES LARGE WALLPAPER PRINTS

Creating a big statement is the wallpaper print trend where non-repetitive patterns and designs are displayed in the home. There is no use of tiled graphics but rather large murals printed on wallpaper more closely representing large-scale artwork than traditional décor. The wallpaper ranges from linear designs to large floral prints all with an impactful, playful element that serves to create a #livingdream.
LINEAR DESIGN
Moving towards the other side of human nature is the need to control and manage the mayhem by placing items in frames or boxes. This is evident in the linear trend which is a modern, simplistic design, which echoes the “thin black line” trend, but taking it further with the use of vibrant colour. While the straight lines provide structure and control, the eye is quickly drawn to the playful colours that remind us of our more spontaneous characteristics.
JUST WORDY AND FURNITURE TATTOOS
Providing a creative outlet for the inner artist, uninhibited doodles, vibrant etchings and inner monologues are being projected onto clothing and furniture in the form of “tattoos”. Once again touching on the black and white colour contrast, the design emulates artistic notebooks and design sketches before final creation. “All interior is a form of creative expression and the tattoo trend is a very vivid example of our need to express ourselves in a very real way,” explained Anita Bloom, Creative Director Decorex SA. “The clean slate is being brought to life through seemingly nonsensical words and imagery that work their way into an entrancing pattern.” TO VIEW FANTASTIC EXAMPLES OF THESE 2017 TRENDS AS WELL AS IDEAS AND INSPIRATION FOR CREATING YOUR OWN #LIVINGDREAM, VISIT DECOREX SA – COSPONSORED BY PLASCON AND CAESARSTONE – IN DURBAN, CAPE TOWN AND JOBURG. AN EXPERIMENT IN DATE DRESSING
WE ASKED THE BOSS, BEST FRIEND AND A FASHION EXPERT TO DRESS OUR COLLEAGUE FOR A FIRST DATE AND THESE ARE THE RESULTS. OUR AIM? TO ANSWER ONE QUESTION AS OLD AS TIME: WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON A FIRST DATE?
Apparatus First, we needed a willing (and single) test subject. Meet Lerato. She works in Spree’s kids’ buying department and also just happens to look like a model (we did find out later that she does, in fact, model part time, which explains things). The first time I met Lerato was stepping into the lift at the office with another colleague of mine, who complimented her shoes. I chimed in that I liked her pants, her top, her face, her everything. So when we were looking for someone to play dress up for this story we immediately knew she was “the one”. Lerato describes her style as comfortable, classy with a dash of sexy. Her style uniform consists of pants, a sexy top, statement jacket and high heels, sometimes switching that up with a sexy dress and jacket. This girl is not afraid to look sexy and I love that. She describes herself as a glamorous kinda girl who loves to dress up for any and every occasion. She has also never had a bad date. When asked for her worst date story she says, “I have always gone on dates with people that I really like and where I feel that there is a good connection between the two of us, whether it is friendship or a relationship.” I like this girl more and more.
Method
We enlisted Lerato’s boss, her best friend and a fashion expert to pick out three different first date looks for her to test drive. 2017 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

THE BOSS:
Jeanne-Marie Gomes, Buying Manager Kids’ Department Lerato immediately knew this was the look her boss picked out exclaiming, “This is so JeanneMarie, I can so see her wearing this!” This was also the look she felt the sexiest in, saying, “I have never tried the off-the-shoulder trend before and I liked the fact that it showed off an area of my body that I rarely expose.” Bared shoulders for the win.
WHY JEANNE-MARIE CHOSE THIS LOOK: Because she thought she’d be comfortable in it and in turn come across as confident. “It’s an easy dress-up/dress-down style and can be paired with flats as well, so it works for any date.” And in the way of accessorising, she says “I added only earrings to this outfit and no neckpiece as I think there is enough of a focus point already with the ruffle.”

THE FASHION EXPERT:
Chris Viljoen, Spree Fashion Director While she admitted this wouldn’t have been her first choice for a date, she did look incredible in it. “I liked all the outfits, but I was least comfortable in the black dress. I was not fond of the idea of having to keep pulling down the dress as I walked,” she told us.
WHY CHRIS CHOSE THIS LOOK: Our fashion expert took an uncomplicated approach to the first date outfit. A LBD, killer heels and a small, easy-to-carry bag that added a pop of colour to the look. There’s a reason this look is a classic and with these three items on hand, you have a first date go-to look and don’t even have to think about it. 58

THE BEST FRIEND: Ibtisaam Jardien
When she tried on this look the first words out of her mouth were, “I think this is the one,” and later: “I could live the rest of my life in the flared pants and the red bodysuit, it’s totally my style!”
WHY IBTISAAM CHOSE THIS LOOK: Knowing her the best out of our three stylists, her best friend picked out something that was very true to her individual style and fit well with her personality. And it paid off, Lerato loved this look.
DiscussioN
Lerato was pretty impressed with the outfits saying, “They were all different in many ways. I like different elements of them and I didn’t have any concerns because I knew I was in good hands. It was interesting to see how they all perceived my ideal first date outfit.”
Conclusion
After this experiment, what is Lerato’s advice for dressing for a first date? She highly recommends staying true to your style. “Your comfort and confidence in your outfit influences how well and smoothly the date will go.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Sensory OVERLOAD OVER STIMULATION IS SET TO BECOME THE NEW “BUZZ WORD” IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS. AND IT’S ABOUT TIME WITH SO MANY OF THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES WE ARE FACED WITH TODAY – INCLUDING ANXIETY, INSOMNIA AND DEPRESSION – BEING TRACED BACK TO BEING OVER STIMULATED. COMBINE CAFFEINE AND SUGAR WITH STRESS, AN UNBALANCED LIFESTYLE AND AN EXCESS OF SCREEN TIME AND IT BECOMES A RECIPE FOR A VERY FAST PACED BUT VERY UNHAPPY LIFE. SO, THE QUESTION IS – HOW DO WE SLOW DOWN? WE FOUND THE EXPERTS WHO HAVE THE ANSWERS. THE LIFE COACH: KERSTIN WADDELL “We’ve all been there – overloaded with demands and deadlines at work, our adrenaline is pumping and we find ourselves doing many things at once (but actually “task shifting”). For most this is exhilarating – “Look at how many balls I can juggle!” Until we drop them. While it appeases the sense of urgency we may have, multi-tasking actually has been proven to not only to slow you down, reduce work quality and creativity, but also negatively affect your memory and your health. It actually supercharges stress. We are overstimulated, flooding our system with adrenaline and cortisol. Ironically, we tend to react to our multiplied stress by multi-tasking even more. All experts recommend that the best way to manage your workload and stress is by only focusing on one thing at a time… how bizarre that more and more people have done the opposite and are even “multi-tasking” in their leisure time. Just look up from your phone for a moment, and you will notice people checking their cellphones while eating a meal – with or without others – texting while driving, or checking their social media updates whilst watching television. This bad habit has spread into all spheres of our lives. 62

One of the consequences is that we become more and more fragmented – we are never really present to the events of our lives. This only adds to the sense of urgency we feel. If there is no place in your life where you can be fully present, you will miss living life completely. A 2009 study done by Western Washington University found that 75% of college students who walked across a campus square while talking on their cell phones did not notice a clown riding a unicycle nearby. Even though the cellphone talkers were technically looking at their surroundings, none of it was actually registering in their brains. This is referred to as “inattentional blindness.” When we’re checking that Whatsapp message in the middle of a conversation with a friend, child, or partner, we are actually saying that they are not important. We are surprised that people get upset, not being aware of our “inattentional blindness”. While we believe that constantly following the news or social media helps us stay connected (to what’s going on and each other), it has the opposite effect. We end up living inside a superficial, virtual bubble and stop connecting wholeheartedly.

Why is there a growing trend towards seeking out more and more distractions? Why is it so difficult to ignore the notifications beeping and demanding your attention? Who is in charge of your life? We have allowed ourselves to be conditioned to address immediate demands which seem urgent but have confused urgency with importance. For others it may simply be that we seek an escape from reality, from stillness. What would happen if you were to not fill your time? What do you fear? FOMO, noticing a longing or some other emotional pain? Like an addiction, you would need to first recognise the madness of chasing distractions and overstimulation. Do you wish to be ruled by these superficial and passing demands? How many hours a day do you check social media, do you check your phone? When do you check it? What is the underlying feeling/urge? Is it fear, anxiety, stress? Are you a tech addict?”
THE NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST: HANNAH KAYE, BSC (HONS) NUTRITIONAL HEALTH “The biggest problem with what we can term as ‘adult sensory overload’ is that we lose connection not only with 64

many of the things around us but also with ourselves. We neglect our partners and children and pay absolutely no attention to the fuel we are putting into our bodies. After all, we’d rather watch television and tweet than make a salad for dinner. We know that there is a link between screen time and weight gain in children. Whilst with children this is mostly tied to lack of exercise, with adults it runs much deeper. Social anxiety, chronic stress and insomnia are all symptoms of sensory overload. Amongst the numerous conditions associated with insomnia (like depression for example), we also know that it is linked to weight gain. The relationship between sleep loss and weight gain is a strong one. Large population studies show that both adults and children are more likely to be overweight and obese when they sleep less at night. When people are allowed to sleep eight hours one night and then half that amount on another, they end up eating more on the days when they’ve had less sleep. Additionally with insomnia, the stress hormone cortisol climbs and markers of inflammation rise. Hormones that stimulate appetite increase, while hormones that blunt it drop. People become less sensitive to insulin, ultimately raising their risk of Type 2 diabetes. This not only has to do with hormones but also with poor food choices people make when they are sleep deprived. Unfortunately, the cycle perpetuates itself – sleep deprivation leads to poor food choices and high caffeine intake, which ultimately leads to low energy and more screen time. From a nutrition perspective, the best way to “de-stimulate” is to sit down at a table and eat a meal. If you’re a parent, eat with your kids. If you live alone, it’s as important for you to sit down at a table too. No televisions, tablets or phones are allowed. Eating surrounded by additional stimulus usually results in overeating – your hypothalamus is so busy worrying about your social media profile that it forgets to let you know you’ve had enough to eat. You don’t need to be a foodie to love good food. The evidence is building up that a healthy, nourishing diet has a positive impact on mood. Spend 30 minutes a day cooking yourself a meal
that preferably doesn’t come from a packet. Nurture this time – instead of it being a stressor, let it become the thing that de-stresses you. Finally, turn off your router at 9pm and switch your phone off. Feed your body with food and feed your mind with no technology.”
HOW DO YOU RECONNECT WITH REAL LIFE? Recognise what you’re doing and “check in” with yourself: What this choice is actually pointing towards: are you fearful of something? Are you trying to avoid something? Address the issue directly. Set an intention of doing one thing at a time: How? By connecting to the reason why this is important – for yourself, for your family and for society at large. Make a commitment to honour your intention. Be discerning about what media you consume: Set time limits to your engagement. What other rules or guidelines can you commit to? Start a discussion with family or colleagues: Find out how this habit is affecting them and each other. Come up with supportive strategies together to work towards connection rather than disconnection. For example, agree on a tech free zone for all. Lead by example.
