COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE! RUN OR WALK CAPE TOWN’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ROAD RACE! IT’S NOT JUST FUN, IT’S FOR A GOOD CAUSE TOO!
MESSAGE
Editor FROM THE
P S:
The Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Grand Prix Road Race Series is the first of the year, after which the event heads to Port Elizabeth (5 May), Durban (24 June), Pretoria (5 August), Pietermaritzburg (19 August) and Johannesburg (7 October). Good luck to the top athletes who will take part in all the races!
Elsabe van Zyl
W
hat a pleasure to welcome all of you beautiful women to the Cape Town leg of the SPAR Grand Prix series, and the 26th year that the SPAR Women’s Challenge is being hosted in Cape Town. This year we are back in the precincts of Bellville, where the race was held previously and it brings back many happy memories. We look forward to making many more new ones this year. Women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels are welcome. Some do it for the love of running, many come for the atmosphere, more come for the good cause but whatever your reason for entering, 25 March will be a Sunday morning well worth getting out of bed for. There is much to celebrate! Firstly, there is a fabulous route through leafy suburbs. If you’re not running, you can enjoy a 5km scenic walk and chat with your best friend – or even make a new one. As a proud reminder, you will receive a beautiful race medal and goodie bag when you finish the race. After we have honoured our top runners at the prize giving, our proudly Cape Town Idol winner, Paxton, is sure to end the day on a high note. R25 000 in SPAR shopping vouchers are also waiting for one lucky winner and a stunning five night getaway for two people in Mauritius is also up for grabs courtesy of Villas & Hotels! Once again we will be putting smiles on the faces of less fortunate children. The chosen race charity, for the 9th year in a row, is Operation Smile South Africa. Just by entering, you have put R5 towards the amazing work that this non-profit organisation provides by offering free reconstructive surgery to children born with cleft lip or palate syndrome. Then there is YOU, of course, our biggest reason to celebrate. See you at the start on Sunday, 25 March at the Bellville stadium. I look forward to celebrating race day, having fun and spending time with all of you.

HONOURING WOMEN A DAY OF ENTERTAINMENT IN AID OF OPERATION SMILE
MESSAGE FROM THE
Marketing Director
E
xcitement is growing for the Cape Town 2018 SPAR Women’s Challenge, a day to celebrate the women of Cape Town. Women are important to us at SPAR and we try to uplift our women through sponsoring them in sport with the aim of giving our beautiful women the credit and recognition they deserve. SPAR Western Cape sponsors ladies’ golf days and a schoolgirls’ hockey tournament. SPAR is also the proud sponsor of our national Netball team. Read more about SPAR’s proud sponsorships in the magazine. On race day, it’s all about the women of Cape Town. Cape Town’s beat, Heart FM, will have their DJ’s at the start and finish to cheer you on. Idols winner, Paxton, a proud product of Bishop Lavis, will
Colin Patterson
provide entertainment at the prize giving. Whether you’re a top runner competing in the 10km race, taking part in the SPAR Grand Prix Challenge, or joining in with a group of your friends to walk the 5km, the SPAR Women’s Challenge is a fun and welcoming space for all. The same goes for all the supporting boyfriends, husbands, fathers and brothers who join us at the stadium to cheer the 21 000 participants on. We want everyone to leave the day with a smile on their faces; which is fitting as the beneficiary for the race is Operation Smile South Africa. R5 of every entry is donated to the organisation, which provides free cleft lip and palate surgeries to children in SA, and now also across Southern and Central Africa. This is the 9th year that SPAR Western Cape and the women who enter the Women’s Challenge are supporting this life-changing organisation. I would like to thank the race organisers, Western Province Athletics, and their team of volunteers who do it for the love of running, working tirelessly for weeks running up to the event, as well as our media partners, Die Burger and Heart FM. A big thank you also goes out to the SPAR marketing team. Ultimately this race is about you. I encourage you to have fun and enjoy the day with your friends. May you meet the goal that you have set for yourself. Celebrate your womanhood and the role that you play in your family, your community and our country.

MESSAGE FROM
Heart FM A PROUD ASSOCIATION
Renee Redelinghuys
A
s someone who tries to keep fit I think the SPAR Women’s Challenge is the perfect event for women who juggle work, motherhood and extramural activities. Let’s be honest, every year we set ourselves those new years’ resolution fitness goals and by mid-January, they’re either out the window or we will be starting “next Monday”. I’m sure we can attest to this? The event is therefore perfectly timed to get us back into our walking/ running shoes for a fun day out with the girls, while working towards our fitness goals. Heart FM has a large female listenership to which this event appeals and we have seen the growth in numbers over the past few years. The event provides women with a little “me time” to bond with the women in their lives, that they often don’t get to see as a result of work or family commitments. Heart FM has been the radio media partner to the SPAR Women’s Race for the last few years and I believe the partnership is the perfect fit. We share common values and share the ethos of a healthy balanced lifestyle and community. We are at the very heart of communities in the Western Cape and we have the platform to convey messages to them making us the perfect medium to reach the women participating in the race. We are proud to be associated with SPAR who do so much in these communities whether it be upliftment projects or assisting soup kitchens. Our association is so much more than a partnership as SPAR came on board with our 16 Days For Youth campaign, assisting us to bring change in communities across the Western Cape for the last two years. We look forward to working with this incredible brand for years to come.

SPAR BELIEVES THAT WOMEN ARE OF VITAL IMPORTANCE. THEY PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN SOCIETY AND SPAR BELIEVES IN HELPING TO UPLIFT WOMEN AND BUILD RECOGNITION FOR THEM WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITIES BY TAKING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN WOMEN’S SPORTS, IN THE WESTERN CAPE AND THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

PAR’s first sponsorship venture began with road running, a 5km or 10km race for women to come together and run safely through the streets of Durban and Johannesburg, with Cape Town, PE and Pretoria following soon after. The SPAR Women’s Challenge is a uniquely designed race that accommodates all levels of fitness at once. The entertainment and social aspect of the race can’t be compared to any other and contributes to the race being one of the most anticipated running events of the year. The SPAR Women’s Challenge races all form part of the SPAR Grand Prix Challenge, which is the competitive side of the Women’s Races. The Grand Prix Challenge celebrates the top women runners in the country and rewards them with cash prizes. 8

Runners accumulate points in each race and the runners with the highest number of points at the end of the season are awarded prizes. The response to road running was so positive that SPAR began to expand their sponsorships to tennis, hockey, bowls, golf and netball. SPAR takes pride in being actively involved in school sports and giving girls
opportunities they may not have had otherwise. One way that they do this is by sponsoring the SPAR School Girl’s Hockey Challenge, which started in KZN but has been met with resounding success in the Cape. The tournament brings schoolgirls’ first teams together to compete, with each regional finalist taking part in the Grand Finale. SPAR is an avid follower of netball
and The SPAR South African Netball Team, The SPAR National Netball Championships and the Botswana Women’s Netball League are all among their sponsorships. SPAR Western Cape is a sponsor of Extreme Netball, an initiative which offers netball courses that coach players in a competitive environment and build team spirit. SPAR Western Cape is branching out into mountain biking and sponsors cyclist, Hannele Steyn. The World Triathlon champion, South African X-country champion, South African Biathlon champion, Cape Epic winner, to name a few, is SPAR’s poster girl
for women’s sports. She goes out and achieves what she sets out to do and makes a difference in women’s sport. SPAR Western Cape is proud of Hannele’s achievements and proud to be alongside her. SPAR hopes to see women sport stars and sports teams rise up in South Africa and eventually share the same platform of publicity, recognition and financial reward as their male counterparts. By sponsoring sport, and women’s sport specifically, SPAR brings people together, builds communities and goes a step further in giving the women and girls of South Africa the credit they deserve. 2018 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

RACE DAY
FA Q ' S YOU HAVE COLLECTED YOUR RACE NUMBER AND YOU’RE READY TO GO! HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU GET OUT ON THE ROAD SAFELY.
IS THERE A PLACE FOR MY TOG BAG? Yes, tog bag facilities are available. Look out for the marked tog bag areas. ARE THERE TOILETS? Toilets are stationed at the start and finish but try to go to the little girls' room before leaving home too. DO I NEED TO WEAR MY RACE NUMBERS? Yes, two numbers for the 10km, one on the front and the other on the back. One number for the 5km must be worn on the front. A disposable timing chip will be used for the 10km only (as only the 10km race is timed), which is attached to your FRONT race number. Be sure to wear the race number with the tear off strip on the front of your shirt and not the back. Please do not use any other timing chip, as it may interfere with this system. No chip means that your time will not be recorded. Wear your official SPAR t-shirt or (if you must) your club colours. WHERE CAN I PARK? There will be 3000 free bays and secured parking for R5 available at Tyervalley centre. There will also be 5000 bays priced at R5 at Metropolitan. Willowbridge is offering paid parking and there is free parking behind the Bellville Stadium and on Durban road. WHERE DO I HIT THE ROAD? The start of both the 10km and 5km is in Carl Cronje Drive adjacent to the Bellville Stadium. The finish is inside the Stadium. CAN I BRING MY BABY STROLLER ALONG? By all means. Participants with prams, strollers and small children will only be allowed on the 5km route and participate at their own risk. We need to stress though that you should position yourself right at the back – for the safety of thousands of women running the race, but mostly because we care about the safety of you and your baby. SPAR accepts no liability for any accidents due to negligence. Please note pets are not permitted. 10

MANAGING EDITOR Nicola Profir editor@freeradicalmedia.co.za
IS THERE WATER ALONG THE ROUTE? Please note that due to the drought in the Western Cape, there will be far fewer water points than usual. We are encouraging all ladies to bring their own water along with them. HOW LONG WILL I TAKE TO COMPLETE THE 10 KM RACE? If you are a very fast, fit runner, you’ll be done in just over 30 minutes! If you are not (which places you with thousands of other women) you should be able to complete the race in around 90 minutes. WILL THERE BE SOMETHING TO EAT AFTER THE RACE? Food and refreshments will be on sale at the finish. Halaal will be catered for by certain vendors. WHERE AND WHEN DOES THE PRIZE-GIVING START? The prize-giving will take place on the expansive grass area inside the Bellville Athletics Stadium. The prizegiving starts at 09:30 and the live entertainment will commence at 10:00 followed by the lucky draws. Make sure you don't miss out on this year's amazing prize of 5 nights in Mauritius for two! Prepare to be entertained on race day with the best in local talent! Remember: only those who stay for the prize-giving will be eligible for the lucky draws. AM I ELIGIBLE FOR CATEGORY PRIZES? Only the 10km run category winners are eligible for cash prizes as follows: top ten runners in the Open, top five in the 14 – 19, top three in the 40 – 49, 50 – 59, 60 – 69 and the 70+ categories. The winner of the 5km will receive a trophy and a SPAR voucher. It’s worth putting your race number in the box provided – there are great lucky draw prizes up for grabs including a bumper R25 000 worth of groceries. Men and children under the age of 14 years are not eligible for any prizes. HOW DO I SHOW OFF MY TIME? 10km participants will receive a SMS directly after the race with their provisional time and position. Printed results for the 10km will also appear a week after race day in a special race supplement in Die Burger. WHO BENEFITS FROM THE RACE? Once again the race charity is Operation Smile, so you will be helping a child smile again after life-changing surgery. Now it’s over to you: come along and enjoy the race with thousands of other women!

EACH PATIENT THAT OPERATION SMILE TREATS BECOMES A MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY – SOME BECOME A LITTLE CLOSER THANKS TO REPEATED VISITS AND SPECIAL SMILES.
L
ungile is one such patient. Together with her mother Olga, Lungile first came to Operation Smile in 2015 as a shy, withdrawn child of just over a year old. Born with a cleft lip, Lungile’s family were extremely surprised by her appearance. “I was surprised and even scared the first time I saw her. I thought there would be no one to help her,” explains Lydia, Lungile’s grandmother. Olga explains that while the doctors and nurses at the hospital were able to assure her that surgery to repair Lungile’s lip was possible they also explained that the waiting list could be very long and may take years. This is when Olga met Dr Vanessa Soares, a dentist at the Rob Ferriera Hospital where Lungile was born. Dr Soares is a volunteer with Operation Smile and it wasn’t long before she was introduced to Olga and Lungile. After learning about Operation Smile South Africa through Dr Soares, 16

Olga called the organisation and found out about the mission in September 2015. It is clear how much the relationship with Dr Soares means to Olga and the emotion catches in her throat as she tries to explain. “What she has done for me… I love her.” Living in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, Olga found her community confused and at times afraid of Lungile. The youngest of four siblings, Lungile’s three older brothers were naturally protective of their little sister. “People used to ask what was wrong with Lungile. We told them that she was born like this but when they asked, it made us feel bad,” says 17 year Tebogo, Lungile’s older brother. When Lungile was accepted for surgery and wheeled in, Olga admits some apprehension but when Lungile was taken into recovery and they were reunited, she could not believe her eyes. Lydia mentions that she has family in the Free State who would never know that her granddaughter had ever had a cleft lip without seeing pictures of Lungile before the surgery.

OPERATION SMILE
A year later Lungile returned to the 2016 Operation Smile mission for followup surgery, once more in Mbombela. This time she is far from shy and withdrawn, rather it was apparent that both Lungile and Olga were much happier and more content. “I used to be so stressed and thin, now I am fat,” jokes Olga, “and Lungile loves to dance hip-hop, listen to Rihanna and play her brothers’ musical instruments.” Olga is accompanied by a few other mothers and their children and it soon becomes apparent that she has become an advocate for the organisation and a pillar of strength in her community. “I was out shopping with Lungile and I met a lady who burst into tears because her daughter also had a cleft lip and so I told her she would be okay. We called Dr Vanessa and they are with us today. The baby, Ntando, and Lungile have become great friends,” says Olga. As Lungile and Ntando run across the grass at the OSSA Patient Accommodation, it is apparent that for them life has changed; and for Olga, life will never be the same again. “I will tell people in my community who have children born with a cleft lip that their child could be fixed and they will look nice. The mother must accept her child.” 18

Cleft lip and cleft palate are more common than most people realise, affecting 1 in every 500-700 births. Operation Smile is a global organisation that has made it their mission to help disadvantaged children born with cleft lip. While cleft lip and palate are best treated early, many families don’t have that option due to financial reasons, lack of qualified staff and other factors. The amazing people of Operation Smile, with their limitless energy, motivation and drive, have dedicated themselves to helping these families so they can go on to live healthy and happy lives. Lungile is only one of thousands more stories and lives that have been touched since Operation Smile came to South Africa in 2006. Did you know that it only costs around R5500 to help a child with cleft lip? The surgery is completed in as little as 45 minutes and this short time will change their lives forever. If you would like to get involved or find out more about OSSA, visit our website on southafrica.operationsmile.org.

NOT ONLY IS GLOBAL WARMING AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH AND POLLUTION HARMING OUR PLANET AT A RATE NEVER SEEN BEFORE, NOW THE WESTERN CAPE, AND CAPE TOWN IN PARTICULAR, IS IN THE GRIP OF A SEVERE DROUGHT. CAPE TOWN MAY BECOME THE FIRST MAJOR CITY IN THE WORLD TO ACTUALLY RUN OUT OF WATER. SEVERE WATER RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE AND EVERYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR WATER CONSUMPTION. THE CAPE TOWN SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE HAS THEREFORE DECLARED THAT NOT ONLY WILL 2018 BE OUR BEST RACE YET, IT WILL ALSO BE OUR MOST SUSTAINABLE RACE TO DATE.

e will abide by the strict water restrictions in Cape Town and save as much water as possible on race day. Instead of having the usual three water points along the route, we have cut it down to two. Staying hydrated while running is important though, so the ladies are encouraged to bring their own (reusable) water bottles that can also be filled up at the water points. The Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge wants to use as little of Cape Town’s water as possible, so the bottles of water that will be handed out at the finish will use water brought from KwaZulu Natal. After the race is over, any water left from the day will be donated to needy schools or other institutions. By doing whatever is possible to save as much water as possible, SPAR hopes to be an inspiration to these ladies and their families so they can keep making a difference after race day is over.

MY race
SPAR has held a long partnership with the V&A Waterfront in the ‘It’s Our Plastic, It’s Our Problem’ campaign and in keeping with that, the water served at the water points won’t be in little plastic sachets anymore. Instead we will use disposable, biodegradable cups, cutting out plastic all together. In an effort to cut plastic out completely, the specially designed race t-shirts will no longer come in plastic bags either. They will be wrapped in recycled paper and secured with a sticker to keep it in place. Plastic is a serious problem around the world and many campaigns, such as ‘It’s Our Plastic, It’s Our Problem’ by SPAR and the V&A Waterfront are trying to raise awareness and motivate people to eliminate the use of plastic. Millions of plastic bags are used every day and the majority of these end up in the ocean, especially near coastal cities. These plastic packets stay in the ocean for years, polluting it and harming sea life. Fish and
other animals, such as seals and penguins, mistake the plastic for food and can choke on it; and other sea creatures get tangled or trapped in it. Everyone has to remove as much plastic from their lives as possible if we want to give our sea creatures a chance. The state of the earth is not looking good and it’s important that everyone play their part and take responsibility for their contribution to the environment. The SPAR Women’s Challenge hopes that all of the ladies there on race day follow their example and keep up the spirit of sustainability long after they cross the finish line. 22

RAINBOW’S END
FARMING AND FAMILY The name Rainbow’s End brings to mind images of sunshine after rain, a commitment to the earth and, for the Malan family it held their pot of gold. Rainbows End is a farm that is all about family. The farm was bought by Jacques Malan in 1978 as a prune farm. Both of Jacques’ sons, Anton and Francois, are wine makers and it inspired the old man. In 2000, at the ripe age of 57, Jacques began his first foray into wine making. Anton was working in the vineyards of Olivier Laporte of Chateau Criox Beausejour at Montagne St. Emillon in France and it was under the advice of Olivier Laporte that they harvested their first grapes from 18 month old vines in 2002 and made their first Shiraz. It exceeded all expectations. Rainbow’s End is situated 540m above sea level on the Jonkershoek Mountain, in the nook of the Banghoek Valley. The altitude provides perfect weather and the red oak leaf soil is perfect for the growth of the vines. Twenty-two hectares of the 50 hectare farm is under grape and they currently produce Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Anton and Francois are the winemakers with Anton in charge of marketing. The final family stamp on the wines is the label, designed by their sister, Marieke Kruger. WHALEHAVEN
EARTH, VINES AND SEAS A boutique winery in Walker Bay, Hermanus, Whalehaven is renowned for creating elegant fine wines cultivated in a traditional style that exhibit classic sophistication. The wines are mostly made from grapes grown on the Bottega Family Farm in Stellenbosch but are vinified and bottled at Whalehaven Winery. The area is a sanctuary for migrating whales and the winery is named after the protective bay that shelters and protects the Southern Right whales that come to breed in the cool winter months. This cooler climate along the coast is perfect for vineyards. At Whalehaven, all wines are hand-crafted to reflect the particular nuances for each varietal. Over time, Whalehaven has gained a reputation for their French-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which are icons of the Hermanus region and have long held their place in the Whalehaven winery portfolio. These wines are produced in limited numbers so they are quickly sold out and have become a coveted varietal for any wine lover. Whalehaven have recently released their new flagship range, Conservation Coast. The two premium wines, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are sourced from local upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley vineyards and are produced in limited edition, individually numbered bottles. Both wines are aged in French Oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months and display a French style of finesse and longevity. For more information, visit www.whalehavenwines.co.za. You can also email experience@whalehaven.co.za or call them on 028 316 1633 for orders, queries and opening times.
MOOIPLAAS
BEAUTY, SUSTAINABILITY AND WINE MAKING MIX TO MAKE MAGIC Mooiplaas Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve is a pristine natural beauty found on the steep, mineral rich slopes of the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch. The highest point of the estate offers a panoramic view of the Cape Peninsula, with False Bay to the left and Table Bay to the right. The steep, uneven slopes, from meadows on the valley floor to the very top of the hills, are one of the most striking features of Mooiplaas. These topographical contrasts result in interesting differences in the microclimate, enabling a production of a variety of wines. All wines at Mooiplaas are produced in traditional artisanal methods. Their collection includes wines such as The Bean (coffee Pinotage), The Coco (chocolate Merlot), The Mulberry (Shiraz), The Lemongrass (Sauvignon/Chenin Blanc), The Peach (Chenin Blanc/Viognier) and The Strawberry (RosĂŠ). The history of Mooiplaas dates back to around 1806 and the manor house is an impressive example of Cape-Dutch architecture. The house is a national monument and Mooiplaas Nature Reserve was registered in 1995, with 70 hectares on the estate dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Fynbos species. The farm strives to create sustainable, environmentally friendly wines. Winemaker on the estate, Louis Roos, believes in using the best grapes with minimal interference to produce wines that are distinctive and expressive. LONGRIDGE
NATURALLY GOOD Longridge Wine Estate is located in South Africa’s most famous wine region, on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain near Stellenbosch. Longridge is guided by their principle philosophy: “By farming organically, we respect the health of all.” From this beautiful piece of land and guided by long-lost traditions of natural winemaking, award winning wines are produced. At Longridge, they believe that organic and bio-dynamic farming not only produces better wines, it also restores the soil so that the 175 year old estate can be farmed for another 200 years to come. By not using herbicides and chemical pesticides, the immune system of the vines is improved which yields more productive crops. Instead, natural fertilizers and pest repellents are used. At Longridge, people, chickens, ducks, horses and a herd of Nguni cattle all form part of the process. The award winning Longridge Restaurant not only offers panoramic views of False Bay and Table Mountain, but also delicious South African inspired organic cuisine. The menu is rich in organic meat and herbs and vegetables grown on the estate and is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. The meals, masterfully created by the finest chefs, are complemented by a large selection of specially matured vintage wines from the Longridge wine library. Visit www.longridge.co.za or email info@longrigdge.co.za for more information. You can also call them on 021 855 4082.
DIEU DONNÉ
A GIFT FROM GOD “Dieu Donné”, literally translated, means ‘A gift from God’ or ‘God Given’. The magnificent view from the estate high up on the mountain can make anyone agree with the name of this wine estate. The exceptional conditions in which the grapes are grown give Dieu Donné’s wines their unique characters. The location of the estate provides cooler weather in summer, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and not over-produce. The soil is not irrigated which concentrates the flavour and Dieu Donné’s terrior in the grapes. Dieu Donné is situated high on the south-west facing slopes of the Franschoek Mountains. The vineyard was first acquired by Robert Mainguard, a French-Mauritian in search of his French roots in South Africa in 1987. The self-contained winery made and produced a range of blended wines. In 1988, the winery was extensively replanted, with Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and various Chardonnay clones replacing the old vines. The estate has produced Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for some time and has recently introduced a Methode Cap Classique, a bottle fermented sparkling wine. The unique altitude and soil on Dieu Donné allow the grapes to produce a high natural acid, more reminiscent of European vineyards than South African. WILDEKRANS WINE ESTATE TRADITION MEETS PROGRESS.
This 1020-hectare estate was originally established as a mixed farming operation. Today Wildekrans still produces export quality fruit from its 20 hectares under plum and pear orchards, but wine has become both a passion and a priority in more recent years. Twelve hectares have recently been planted under olive trees, both eating and oil varieties. One of the standout features of the Wildekrans Wine Estate is its exceptionally rare terroir. Situated near the famous whale-watching town of Hermanus, Wildekrans benefits from the rocky terrain and the cool sea breeze that regularly sweeps across the vines in the afternoon. It’s these same features that make it the perfect habitat for one of South Africa’s rare species of flora, Renosterveld fynbos. Ownership of Wildekrans was taken over by the Harlow Family almost 15 years ago, which saw increased investment in the land, personnel and their processes as part of a goal to create one of South Africa’s top wines. Since then the estate has won several awards for their wines – and for their commitment to implementing modern and more sustainable farming practices. Wildekrans’ offering lends itself to the more adventurous wine connoisseurs – with more than just tastings to be experienced at the estate. Visitors can choose from horse riding, mountain biking or hiking through the wondrous natural beauty of the surrounding region along with tasting their award-winning wines and experiencing fine dining at one of the estate’s two restaurants. Contact Wildekrans via email at vineyards@endlessgroup.co.za or call 028 284 9902. Visit www.wildekrans.com for more information. 30

THE GIN REVOLUTION ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA HAS CAUSED QUITE A STIR BUT IF YOU PREFER A NON-ALCOHOLIC ALTERNATIVE, YOU MIGHT FEEL A LITTLE LEFT OUT. NOT ANY MORE – THANKS TO THE DUCHESS VIRGIN GIN AND TONIC, THERE IS NOW A DELICIOUS ALCOHOL FREE OPTION. KEEP READING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF GOING NONALCOHOLIC AND FOR SOME TASTY COCKTAIL RECIPES COURTESY OF THE DUCHESS.
FLORAL FRUITY ICE LOLLIES RECIPE Place a selection of your favourite fruits in ice lolly moulds – strawberries, blueberries and diced peaches work well. Pour a little Duchess Floral over the first layer of fruit and freeze it. Then add another layer of fruit and top off with more Duchess until the mould is filled. Wait till frozen and enjoy!
"W
hat can I get you to drink?" If this question leaves you dreading yet another sugar-laden soft drink or cordial concoction when you decline alcohol in a social setting, you're not alone. Many South Africans have cottoned onto the countless benefits of fitter, healthier, alcohol-free lifestyles, and now choose fun experiences rather than pub-setting outings when spending time with their friends, even though the drinks market has been a little slow to catch up.

THE BENEFITS OF SWITCHING TO NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WHEN YOU'RE OUT AND ABOUT ARE NUMEROUS. THESE INCLUDE:
THE HEALER
Feeling healthier. Without alcohol, the communication between your neurons and neurotransmitters normalises, which means your entire body will work (and feel!) better.
• Ginger syrup (Reduce grated ginger, water & a dash of honey) • Lime wedges • 1 The Duchess Virgin Gin & Tonic • Serve chilled over ice
Give your Duchess a healthy kick by adding fresh ginger and lime wedges.
Looking younger. Alcohol dries out your skin and reduces its elasticity. Once you quit, collagen levels slowly increase, and redness disappears. Saving money. Alcohol is expensive and can also lead to poor spending decisions. More stable social connections. Sobriety = more meaningful relationships. Losing weight. Alcohol contains almost double the caloric content of proteins and carbs (7 per gram!). More time for fun stuff. Your social calendar will be wide open for the first while. Then you get to fill it with fun things like learning a new skill (guitar, belly dancing, gardening), or joining in on active pursuits like hikes, trail runs, cycling events, swimming meets, etc. Better sleep. Alcohol is linked to disrupted sleep and insomnia. When you quit drinking, you restore your brain’s ability to facilitate healthy, refreshing sleep. Sharper focus. When you quit alcohol, you free up a lot of your time and mental energy – leaving you with plenty of room to pursue your goals.

Whether you have given up alcohol to boost your longevity, because it no longer made sense as a part of your lifestyle, or simply because you like to feel fresh in the morning after a night out, there are healthier options available. Benefit from social occasions without compromising on health (or fun!) by enjoying The Duchess Virgin Gin & Tonic – the fresh, low-calorie, sugar-free alternative to the sweet beverages that often become the refuge of adults who prefer to avoid alcohol. To keep things exciting, a new dame was also recently added to the line-up – the delicious The Duchess Floral, infused with natural extracts of primrose, citrus blossom and indigenous honeybush, this botanical beauty is just the ticket if you like your guilt-free drink richly aromatic.

ABOUT THE DUCHESS The Duchess is the world’s first non-alcoholic gin & tonic, the brainchild of founder Johannes le Roux, and proudly South African. The Duchess’ botanists made this unique drink concept possible by blending re-distilled juniper berries with their own botanically infused tonic water. This not only gives The Duchess that distinct gin & tonic taste, but also adds beautiful aromatic layers of orange peel, all spice, star anise and cardamom. The all new Duchess Floral variant is infused with the natural extracts of primrose, citrus blossom and the indigenous honeybush. The citrus blossom in the floral variant naturally compliments the zesty taste of gin and tonic, while the honeybush is a tip of the hat to The Duchess’ local roots. FAST
Fixes
IN OUR DAY AND AGE, PEOPLE LIKE TO STAY STRESSED AND KEEP BUSY. WE LIKE BRAGGING ABOUT HOW MANY HOURS WE WORKED LAST WEEK AND HOW MUCH STRESS WE HAVE IN OUR LIVES. THAT STRESS TAKES A TOLL THOUGH, AND OUR HEALTH BEGINS TO DETERIORATE AND SOMETIMES WE DON’T EVEN NOTICE UNTIL WE’RE REALLY SICK. HERE ARE OUR TEN FAST FIXES TO GIVE YOURSELF A BOOST AND IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH.
WAKE UP, SUNSHINE Vitamin D, or the sunshine vitamin, is crucial for a good immune system and healthy bones, and even improves your mood. The majority of us suffer from Vitamin D deficiency without even knowing it. Spending only ten minutes in the sun daily can have a huge impact on your health. Although the real thing is best, if you can’t get out into the sun, take a 10mcg dose of Vitamin D daily.
A LOVELY HOME Surround yourself with beautiful things for a happy and peaceful home. A study done in 2014 measured the mood and heart rate of volunteers when they were showed things that were beautiful, only functional or both. Beautiful and functional objects made them happy, beautiful but not functional objects made them calm and objects that were only functional made them 25% more likely to feel gloomy.
IT’S IN THE CORE ‘Waking up’ your core in the morning will strengthen your body from the inside. You will walk and sit upright, you will feel more energetic; and standing straight gives the impression that you are confident and assured. One way to do this is imagine you are walking on a tightrope. While putting one foot directly in front of the other, heel to toe, walk with your arms outstretched and looking directly forward. You will be amazed at what 30 seconds in the morning can do to your day.

HAPPY CLOTHES Another study done in 2013 by fashion psychologist Karen Pine, author of Mind What You Wear, found that women chose to wear different clothes when they were sad than they chose when they were happy. She advises to always choose clothes that you associate with happiness, even if you don’t feel it. Don’t keep that pretty dress for a special occasion, wear it when you’re feeling blue and see how your mood lifts!
SING ABOUT GINSENG Ginseng is a traditional part of Chinese medicine and is known to improve memory, mood and energy. Ginseng is recognised as a supplement and is recommended for anyone who needs to boost their cognitive function and increase energy levels. It can also be helpful to women who experience mood swings and other PMS symptoms at that time of the month.
OMMM… Meditating can take you back in time, not only in your mind but in your body too. Meditating daily can increase flow of blood to your brain as well as strengthen and lengthen telomeres, the protective DNA ‘caps’ at the end of chromosomes which are linked to aging. If meditation is too much for you, try to find a quiet place to just be at one with your mind and body. Focusing on your breathing, the sound it makes, how it feels cool when you breathe in and warm when you breathe out, is enough to put your mind into a meditative state.
LET IT FERMENT Fermented foods contain live microbes that enhance the good bacteria in your digestive system and may be one of the reasons that the Japanese and Koreans live so much longer than we do. Any kind of fermented food will do: yoghurt, tofu, naturally produced cheese, sauerkraut, kimchee, kefir and tempeh are a few examples. Just make sure it is produced naturally rather than fermented in vinegar.

MY Lifestyle
WALK IT OFF This one is not new to us, the importance of walking is drilled into us in every health magazine there is, and with good reason. The benefits of adding those few extra steps to your day are limitless. Ideally, we should aim for 30 minutes of brisk walking a day but even making small changes, such as parking further from the entrance of the mall can reduce symptoms of depression by 36%, reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 19% and reduce your risk of a stroke by up to 27%. That’s not even mentioning what it can do for your blood flow, weight, mood, strength of your heart and more.
SOME CHOCOLATE WITH YOUR WINE? Dark chocolate and wine both belong to a little known food group called Sirtfoods, which enhance the activity of sirtuins inside the body. These are proteins that control your body’s ability to burn fat, boost muscle and reduce inflammation. Eating 30g of dark chocolate and up to 150ml of red wine three times a week has shown to protect your heart, brain and bone health.

BE ONE WITH NATURE Spending time in the great outdoors can be more beneficial than you think, and those benefits also last longer than you would expect. Only one day in the calm serenity of nature can boost your immune system and increase the number of anti-cancer proteins in your blood for a whole week thereafter. Definitely an excuse to go to the forest every weekend!

Rhythm OF LIFE THE
THE FINEST LIFESTYLE, DESIGN AND DÉCOR TRENDS PULSATING ACROSS THE GLOBE HAVE BEEN EXPERTLY IDENTIFIED AND ELEGANTLY FINESSED BY THE DECOREX SA TEAM INTO THE 2018 #RHYTHMOFLIFE TRENDS, ALL SET TO FEATURE AT THE DECOREX SA EXHIBITIONS, SPONSORED BY KANSAI PLASCON. By: Decorex SA
“T
here are some truly beautiful trends coming through that we are really excited to share at the upcoming Decorex shows,” explained Anita Bloom, Creative Director: Lifestyle, Design & Retail Portfolio for Decorex SA. “Each one has been influenced by the push and pull of modern life, the tension created by the give and take of work and play, as well as the constant movement between our public image and private self. These ever-changing layers work to identify who we are in the world but it’s vital that we create our special, individual space as a way to harmonise all this information.”
MIXED METALLICS
Moving away from the copper dominance, the latest trend in metal is to mix a variety of elements to create a subtle, colourful array. Brass, matte gold, matte black and other iridescent pieces bring an eclectic feeling of warmth to any room.
TEXTURES &COLOURS This aquatic trend brings the soothing, oceanic movement into any space with the repetitive, overlapping pattern reminiscent of rolling waves. This unique shape is particularly eye-catching and provides designers with an extremely versatile décor aspect that can be brought in through ceramic tiles, wallpaper, furniture textures and mere patterns. Depending on the space, the colours can be uniform, move from lighter to darker or even gently contrasting to create a more psychotropical effect.
TERRAZZO TREND
This warming trend continues into 2018 with the subtler tones of sienna, tan and terracotta making way for the stronger rust hue giving a European summer flavour to interior design. The terrazzo trend can be seen in walls, floors, furniture pieces or even accent décor pieces. 50

NATURAL FORM COLOUR
The Plascon Colour of the Year, Amadeus, is a neutral that perfectly captures the essence of this year’s trends. It’s an earthy, yellow-tinted hue that works to bring a space together while the neutral character brings in a harmonising, grounding energy that can be dutifully combined with other, more overwhelming colours.
MY Lifestyle
REFRESHED JEWEL TONES
Where rich jewel tones were a big trend the past few years, there has been some refining of the more literal aspects into subtle, more refreshed jewel tones. This trend is coloured in dusty pink, dusty rose, peacock, muted emerald and rich teal which can be brought through textural elements such as floral, geode rock and associated minerals.

LARGE-SCALE WALL ART
When it comes to artistic décor for 2018, there is no limit in size for wall art. Big, bold pieces will work to enliven any space with visually-created depth and texture – an important aspect of the artwork. Rather than fading into the backdrop, the canvas should make itself felt in a completely entrancing manner.

ROOM DIVIDERS
METAL DESIGN FURNITURE
Simplicity is key in these signature furniture pieces that don’t overwhelm, but rather encourage a tasteful modernity in interior décor. Thin, black lines, natural fabrics and glass can be fused into any must-have furniture item including mirrors, chairs, tables, bookshelves and even potted plant holders.
HYGGE AND LAGOM

52
2018 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE
A sense of endless space can be cleverly fused with an area of comfort and privacy by the simple incorporation of stylish room dividers in varying forms. Maintain that desired open-plan space while using thinlined or meshed dividers crafted out of metal or wood. These create a sense of separation for the individual, while not completely closing off the rest of the world.
Scandinavian influence is extending its comforting reach across the globe. Combining modernist form with function, each décor item is made simply using only quality materials. These pieces are built to last. The two dominating forces emerging are hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’) and lagom, which both complement and contrast each other simultaneously. Where the Danish hygge embraces cosy serenity, the Swedish lagom seeks an ethos of moderation; yet both are connected by the element of simplicity. Just sitting in front of a roaring fire can bring about hygge, although it can also be achieved by investing in something more desired than practical. Lagom finds happiness in a ‘less is more’ approach. If hygge is compared with Christmas in all its abundance, lagom would be the New Year’s frugality following this indulgence.

ELEVATED ORGANICS
The natural element continues to weave itself into the elevated organics trend. Here, modern pieces are connected with the outside through organically tactile, luxurious materials. Inspired by nature, this trend incorporates neutral tones with flowing lines interspersed by realistically rough textures that bring the design to life.
PERFECT PATTERNS &PRINTS PSYCHOTROPICAL
This emerging trend emanates from the psychedelic movement while evolving into a digital modernity that touches on the natural. In this digitised world, nature will branch out to include virtual reality wonderlands, with the digital now moving into the physical, creating a ‘phygital’ design. An interesting contrast is created by the juxtaposition of the man-made creation and the natural. The psychotropic trend is defined by vibrant palettes; vivid tropical patterns and digitised prints; lush, botanical themes which take on a heightened, near-synthetic form and motifs with a hallucinogenic quality. When it comes to tints and tones, the psychotropical trend is dominated by deep, saturated colours.
Decorex SA empowers visitors seeking to harness their #rhythmoflife with inspired realizations of the 2018 trends through carefully curated features. To view these and more, head on down to one of the Decorex 2018 exhibitions in Cape Town, Joburg and Durban, brought to you by Kansai Plascon.

DIGITAL PRINT
Harkening to the psychotropical trend is the digital print trend inspired by Camille Walala. This is a powerfully positive trend that reflects bright colours in a tribal pop style exuding boundless energy. This design trend, which follows the ‘bigger is better’ form, works perfectly in any show-stopping or social space.

o celebrate nearly twenty years of the GEL-NIMBUS TM series, ASICS is launching a new edition of its most popular long-distance shoe, the GEL-NIMBUSTM 20. The lightest model in GEL-NIMBUS history, the GELNIMBUSTM 20 is made for the runner in everyone – whether it’s your first mile or your hundredth. Its gradient jacquard-mesh FluidFit® upper strategically adapts to your foot's natural motion while 3D printed overlays offer extra support to give you a customized fit that keeps you going mile after mile. Like the GEL technology in the shoe, running is evolving – breaking the mould of what people consider a runner to be. The new GEL-NIMBUSTM 20 shoe is designed with cushioning and lightweight comfort aimed to give runners their best performance from start to finish. Today, GEL-NIMBUSTM is the leading cushioning model mainly for neutral runners and underpronators, packed with a range of ASICS performance technology. The combination of its patented FlyteFoam® midsole inserts with GEL Technology gives the GEL-NIMBUSTM 20 superior cushioning, shock absorption
and a lightweight feel with every step. Built for runners of every stride, the GEL-NIMBUSTM 20 features new Gradient Jacquard Mesh structure, designed with strategic 3D printed overlays that seamlessly wrap and support the foot throughout your run. The new feature on the upper also gives feet a great fit and breathability for runners of every stride. Gerard Klein, Global General Manager Performance FW, ASICS Europe B.V. says, “The GEL-NIMBUSTM is a shoe with nearly 20 years of history. And there’s a very good reason for this—since its debut in 1999, the GEL-NIMBUSTM has managed to deliver against runners’ highest expectations and help them achieve their personal bests. The GEL-NIMBUSTM has always been designed to offer runners superior cushioning without excess weight. In fact, Nimbus means “cloud” in Latin. Our goal with the GEL-NIMBUSTM S is literally to make runners feel so light and comfortable, it’s almost like they’re running on a cloud. Every year ASICS raises its aspirations even higher, and we will continue to innovate and develop the GEL-NIMBUSTM series.” 2018 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

Brain FEEL LIKE IT HAS TOO DOES YOUR
MANY TABS OPEN? THE RISE OF SINGLE-TASKING!

hile we all agree that today’s demanding times and complex lives are filled with too many things competing for our attention and too many distractions, most of us still believe that multi-tasking is a necessity. Perhaps. But what we probably actually mean is working on multiple projects – or “multi-project-ing” (as I would call it), and the most productive way to do

this is by consciously approaching each project in a task-by-task manner. Multi-tasking isn’t actually possible. Our brain just cannot do it. What we’re actually doing when we’re multi-tasking is rapidly toggling between tasks and constantly switching between contexts which in turn becomes the perfect training ground for an inability to concentrate and focus. Ironically, multi-tasking perpetuates the cycle of stress. Usually a sense of panic and urgency will kick start our multitasking. As we wear ourselves out and lose focus by rapidly toggling between tasks, we increase our chances of dropping the ball, which triggers feelings of fragmentation and being overwhelmed, i.e. more stress. This stress may motivate us to multi-task even more – or at least we say to ourselves, next time we’ll ‘work smarter’. Multi-tasking is the opposite of working smarter. When we’re constantly being pulled away from our main task by emails, social media, and our many other distractions and procrastination tactics, what we are actually saying is that none of the tasks we’re working on simultaneously are actually important enough to warrant our full attention. Our tendency to multi-task may also mask a possible “addiction to busy”. Paula Davislaack (JD MAPP, the Founder and CEO of the Davis Laack Stress & Resilience Institute) explains how, “busy has become a badge of honour, particularly at work. The more you bill or sell and the more clients you have, the more you are valued, seen as important, and worthy. Being busy isn’t a bad thing as long as it’s purposeful, but too many people go from busy, to addicted to busy, to burned out. People also use busyness as a shield to avoid confronting unpleasant truths in their lives.” In her New York Times bestseller, Daring Greatly, Dr. Brene Brown argues that people use different numbing strategies as armour against vulnerability — showing other people who you really are. And before you think that this doesn’t apply to you because you’re not numbing 2018 • MY CAPE TOWN RACE

with drugs or alcohol, Dr. Brown talks about one of the most prevalent numbing strategies people use - something she calls “crazy-busy.”
IS SINGLE TASKING REALLY BETTER?
Single tasking may seem counterintuitive when things are demanding and you have a lot on your plate, but research has shown that is has many benefits. Single tasking conserves energy, increases productivity, increases commitment, promotes self-discipline, strengthens us against distractions, improves our attention span, makes us happier, improves our communication, and improves our relationships. Single tasking surely is working smarter: When it comes down to getting the important things done, do less with laser focus to achieve more.
HOW CAN YOU BREAK THE HABIT AND SINGLE TASK LIKE A SUPERHERO?
Like all changes in behaviour, it starts with your intention. If you truly can see the downside of multi-tasking and wish to change, you can. You don’t need motivation because you’ve already bought into the value of single tasking. The rest will then be logical: • Make Space. Both in your diary by planning ahead and blocking out a chunk of time for the task, as well as in your mind. If your panicked mind is shouting that multi-tasking is the only way, calm yourself through some deep “right into your belly” breathing. • Show up with patience and persistence. Know that you’re working on a new habit and it will take some practice. Trial and error are the only ways you will learn. • Stay focused. When you catch yourself being tempted to check emails, or status updates, be firm and bring your focus back: Ask “What is important right now?” Say an outright no or not now to everything else. • Let go of the perceived instant (but

short lived) gratification of multi-tasking – such as responding to constant emails (reality check – you will never be done). Ask yourself “What is important right now?” • Explore deeper. If you’re struggling to let go of your inner multi-tasker, take some time to reflect on your relationship with busyness. You may be an addict or you may be distracting yourself from something in your life that you have been avoiding?
