THE VALUE OF FAMILY T
he time has arrived again to put on the event that has become the highlight of SPAR North Rand’s sponsorship calendar – the SPAR Women’s Challenge! We are so proud to have created an event that is totally dedicated to women’s athletics and provides recognition and reward to our top athletes through participation in the race. The support that this race attracts from top runners and clubs is a clear indication that the Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women's Challenge has established itself firmly on the local athletics calendar and that these runners and clubs see this race as an important part of their annual program. This could not be more apparent than in this year’s race as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the SPAR Grand Prix Series. Aside from our top athletes, the thousands of women who run alongside them are an integral part of what makes this race possible – and what makes it South Africa’s most beautiful road race. SPAR has a very strong presence in the community because each of the 149 owner managed stores spread throughout this region actively participate to support their local schools, churches, orphanages, police force and various sporting clubs
(to mention just a few). What this means is that SPAR remains very much a hometown grown, hometown owned, and hometown proud organisation. Being able to give back to so many of the worthy causes and charities is always a major highlight for me. In terms of the SPAR Women’s Challenge, we are able to give back in a major way with the race beneficiaries being given much needed financial support every year – an initiative that would not be possible without the involvement of our race sponsors. I am immensely grateful for their partnership because with their support we are able to exact real change in the communities that we serve. To all ladies taking part in this year’s race: Train hard, live with gratitude and we’ll see you all on race day!

AT THE POSITIVE SIDE
A
s we approach yet another annual SPAR Women’s Challenge Pretoria race, I find this year’s race theme of gratitude, to be food for thought. Taking this theme to heart really helps one to look around and spot all the things we can each be grateful for. I found this to be true for me, not just in my personal life but in my professional life as well. I am truly grateful to be a part of the SPAR family as my role as divisional marketing director has afforded me the means to help SPAR’s efforts in giving back to the community – something we managed to do year after year both through the race and many additional SPAR initiatives despite how tough the economic climate in South Africa has become. SPAR is proud to be able to host this great event once again – and on behalf of SPAR, I would like to thank our loyal customers and race entrants for their support in making this event happen. I would also like to thank our race sponsors. Not only does your involvement in the race make our donations to the
t Foralue e V Lif of
race beneficiaries possible, but it goes even further than that – it helps us to host South Africa’s most beautiful road race. A very special thank you – and my sincerest gratitude – must also be given to the organizing committee for bringing it all together and making the race a huge success year after year. This year in particular is a special one as we celebrate the ten year anniversary of the SPAR Grand Prix Series. It is amazing to see how this event has grown over the last decade and I would like to congratulate all of the past winners – and wish this year’s top runners the best of luck! Your outstanding performance in every race has not only helped shine the spotlight on women’s sport events but inspires every one of the 25 000 runners who take part in the race each year.
Jerome Jacobs SPAR NORTHRAND MARKETING DIRECTOR
#IAMGRATEFUL I am grateful for the value of life. I urge you all to value life by living each and every day to the fullest, without regrets. Family, and not just by relation, but people that surround you are important and you should value their contribution along with the small things in life. I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks and share my gratitude for everything I've been blessed with: family, friends and the continued support from everyone.
Thank you to all our Sponsors:

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS U
ntil this year, I never realised the depth of my gratitude for this race and all the people involved in it. The organising committee who work tirelessly for months on end, the amazing staff at the home of the race – SuperSport Park, the race sponsors who help make this event a reality every year and YOU! Without the support of the 25 000 women who run the race every year none of it would possible. “What if you woke up today with only the things you were grateful for
yesterday?” This year, as always, there is a special and very important message behind the race. This year we are encouraging all of our participants to count their blessings and to recognise how much we all have to be grateful for. In a time when there seems as though there is not much to be positive about and negativity seems to come at you from every angle (it’s even on your phone thanks to social media) taking stock of everything you have to be grateful for can be very liberating and empowering – which is exactly what the SPAR Women’s Challenge is all about! I encourage you all to think about this as you train for the race – to count your blessings with every step you take. Make
sure to share your insights and your list of the things that you are truly grateful for on the SPAR Women’s Challenge Facebook page. I hope that by taking our theme to heart, everyone will cross the finish line on race day with a changed perspective and most of all, a positive outlook.
Retha Ingenbleek SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE RACE ORGANISER
#IAMGRATEFUL Too often we get so caught up in ‘life’ that we don’t take a moment or moments just to sit back and see how blessed we are. I am grateful for every mistake I made, for every victory won, for every battle lost and for every moment of laughter and even for some tears – it made me the person I am today. I am grateful for the memories I made that will last me a lifetime. I am grateful for the people I met that became friends, and some that became best friends. I am grateful for my small children that became awesome young adults, and for my husband who is my best friend but most of all I am grateful for the grace that carried me every day and continues to carry me and make me the person I am today.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE 2016 ORGANISING COMMITTEE
THE 2016 SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE PRETORIA IS ABOUT BEING GRATEFUL FOR WHAT WE HAVE. EVERY DAY WE MUST STRIVE TO LOOK AROUND AND REALISE HOW TRULY LUCKY WE ARE TO HAVE THE PEOPLE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT ARE IN OUR LIVES. YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT THAT YOU CAN BE A LITTLE BIT HAPPIER EVERY DAY BY THINKING ABOUT ALL THE THINGS YOU’RE THANKFUL FOR. WE ASKED THE 2016 RACE ORGANISING COMMITTEE ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE EACH TRULY GRATEFUL FOR AND QUICKLY FOUND OUT THAT WHEN YOU TAKE THE TIME TO REALLY LOOK AROUND, THERE ARE BIG AND SMALL BLESSINGS EVERYWHERE! 1. RETHA INGENBLEEK
“I am grateful for everything I have been through and experienced in life – both the good and the bad – as that is what made me into who I am today. I am also very grateful for my beautiful children and my amazing husband!”
3. NATASHA VENTER
“I am grateful every day for my family, my health and that I am able to help the less fortunate. It was Marcel Proust who said: ‘Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.’”
2. ANDRE GOBEY
“I am thankful for the love, support and understanding I receive from friends and family every day.”
4. CONRAD VENTER
“I am grateful for being healthy and alive and also for wonderful family and friends.” 5. SOPHIA MATLOU
“I’m grateful for my ability to acknowledge that I must treasure a healthy life for me and my family, protection, love, my job, my daily bread and most of all – the roof over my head.”

6. GERDA VAN SCHALKWYK
“I was writing about what I’m grateful for and I realized that I’m extremely grateful to you, my tribe! Whatever you call your tribe be it family, clan or friends, whatever you call it and whoever you are – you need one. Love your tribe!” 7. RHONA SCHEPPEL
“I am grateful for the blessings that I receive every day, from the air we breathe to the friends and family we have to love and to be loved by. Every day we wake up, knowing that we will be looked after and cared for. Thank you to everyone that has a part in my life and what I am able to achieve.” 8. CHRISTIEN VAN DER MERWE
"The secret to being grateful is to live a grateful life. I am grateful to wake up every day and seize every opportunity that the new day has to offer."
9. ANNA-MARIE DE BEER
“I'm grateful for having the freedom of choice in my life, and for my wonderful parents that taught me from childhood to base every choice in life on responsibility and respect and to always be grateful for everybody and everything in my life. By being responsible, always having respect and always being grateful, one can be useful, and make a difference in many people's lives.” 10. ANDRE DE BEER
“Someday way back I was fighting to survive. Now, no matter how good or bad life seems to be, I wake up each day and I'm grateful for the life I have, because I know someone somewhere is fighting to survive. That's why I travel often, love fully, dream big, work hard, take big risks but always stay humble, right or wrong, and be myself. So count your blessings and let your blessings count!”
11. DAAN DU TOIT
"I am so grateful that at a blessed age of 74 years I am still able to make a contribution to the well-being of others.” 12. RICHARD SCHEPPEL
“I am grateful that every day I can wake up to a new day to love and be loved, be happy and to appreciate every second.” 13. HOWARD MUIR
“Maybe being grateful means recognizing what you have for what it is, appreciating the small victories and admiring the struggle it takes to simply be human. At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing is reason enough to celebrate. I'm grateful for my family and friends and that I'm able to help those in need without thinking of myself.”

MOTIVATED BY HOPE
MATRIC STUDENT, IZELLE VAN ZYL, WAS DIAGNOSED WITH GUILLAIN– BARRÉ SYNDROME AT THE AGE OF 17. THROUGH DETERMINATION AND UNFAILING HOPE FOR HER FUTURE, SHE HAS OVERCOME THE IMPOSSIBLE OBSTACLE OF BEING DIAGNOSED WITH THIS RARE DISEASE AND IS COMING OUT THE OTHER SIDE WITH A CLEAR VIEW OF THE PATH AHEAD OF HER.
I
zelle was a happy and healthy high school student going about her day as normal when the symptoms first struck. “I had absolutely no symptoms until the day I got sick,” Izelle says describing the first moments when the disease presented. “All of a sudden, my right arm went numb and within an hour I couldn’t breathe.” After her second MRI, the doctors informed Izelle that she had developed Transverse Myelitis, a neurological disorder caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. “They told me that only one third of patients recover from it and I decided I would be part of that one third. I stayed positive knowing that anything is possible if you just believe.” Izelle’s treatments began immediately starting with a Polygam treatment – an immune globulin injection that contains antibodies that make your immune system stronger. This treatment halted the path of damage within Izelle’s body that was caused by the virus. She then started undergoing physiotherapy and occupational therapy as part of her treatment. After 7 weeks on a ventilator in the ICU and a week in high care, Izelle was then in rehabilitation for a month. From there, her progress began to show. “I still get physiotherapy, especially for my arms which I cannot yet lift above my shoulders. But the doctors keep telling me 18
2016 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
that it is a miracle that I can even walk at this stage,” Izelle says. Now 18, Izelle has kept her positive outlook and plans to study Criminal Law at the University of Pretoria next year specializing in Criminal Psychology. She says that she also wants to do motivational speaking to tell her story. “I want to show people that you can accomplish anything as long as you have a goal and believe that you can reach it. I also want to show them how my faith made this journey possible.” Izelle says that this experience changed her outlook on life by allowing to her to see that she is far stronger than she ever thought possible. She takes life less seriously now and instead appreciates the little things that we all take for granted.
#IAMGRATEFUL “I have learned to be grateful for even the smallest of things... like breathing. We don't know what we have until we lose it, therefore I am especially grateful for my amazing family and my boyfriend and friends who stood by me and motivated me all the way. I am grateful to be able to walk again. And I am grateful for my faith – that is what gives me strength to face each day.”
SHORTLY BEFORE THE START OF JG OOSTHUIZEN’S MATRIC YEAR A FREAK ACCIDENT DURING THE LAST DAYS OF HIS SUMMER HOLIDAY CAUSED HIS LIFE TO CHANGE IRREVOCABLY.
SET ANOTHER GOAL, DREAM A NEW DREAM
O
n 4 January 2016, a carefree JG was playing with friends and family in the waves at Diaz Beach near Mossel Bay when he did a back flip and accidentally hit a sand bank, head first. This moment changed his life and reality. JG seriously injured his spinal cord and C5 vertebra and was immediately paralysed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, received the best treatment and underwent a highly sensitive operation but was pronounced a C5 quadriplegic. This means that JG is now paralysed from the shoulders down. JG was treated by a team of specialists at Life Riverfield Lodge Rehabilitation Centre until early May, when he was discharged. He continues to receive out-patient rehabilitation sessions under the watchful eyes of physiotherapists and occupational health therapists. “The rehabilitation sessions help me to activate my muscles again. I may not get my total mobility back, but it allows me to perform at least some functions for myself,” says JG. JG, a keen sportsman, first team rugby player for his school, Hoërskool 20
2016 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
Linden, and a member of his school’s student body, has shown determination to overcome his challenges and to adjust to life as a quadriplegic. Since his accident, he has learned to manoeuver his electronic wheel chair around nooks and crannies with his chin and he types at an astounding speed with a special tool operated by his mouth, neck and jaw muscles. “It is great to be able to communicate with my friends via email and Whatsapp. This allows me to stay in touch and still feel that I’m in the mix while I cannot attend school or go to other events,” says JG. “I don’t consider my accident to be the end of my life story. For me, it is the start of a new story which I am living every day. Yes, it comes with major adjustments and new challenges, but I approach these with an attitude of wanting to make it work and trying to find the best way of doing things within my limitations,” continues JG. JG dreams of one day being able to constructively contribute to society, finish his school career, obtain a degree, perhaps become a motivational speaker,
earn his own income, travel and maybe even in some way participate in sport again. “Before the accident, I thought I had my life planned. I wanted to get a driver’s licence, finish matric and become a biokineticist. Now, things are slightly up in the air, and I had to adjust my focus a little – perhaps rather a lot,” laughs JG, “but I am making plans and doing the best I can to continue to lead an active and independent life.” For now, JG will focus on his rehabilitation programme. “I will then see where life takes me,” says JG. JG singles his family and friends out as the most important motivators in his life. “With the support of my mom, brother, stepfather, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and the best friends any guy can ask for, I am ready to take on the world! The people who surround you make life worthwhile. They are the ones who uplift you and even run for you when your legs no longer do the trick,” ends JG. JG’s friends, the community and businesses including SPAR have rallied together to give him all the support possible and to raise much needed funds to help JG achieve his goals.
#IAMGRATEFUL I’m grateful to have continually learned something new about myself and life in general every day. People (myself included) complain far too easily about tiny gripes and small frustrations, while we have really important things to be thankful for. We seldom notice the myriad of daily miracles in our lives. Simple pleasures, like being able to cuddle and hold a loved one, stretch out to take someone’s hand, feed yourself, take a shower or scratch a nagging itch. I now know that life is just about today, being in this moment, making the best of what you have right now and sharing it with the people nearest and dearest to you.
boarding and should definitely get out and play more golf. My right knee is still a problem. It still requires two new ligaments (MCL and PCL). With the surgery only having connected the ACL, I have to wear a knee brace every day. Other than this I will also require a knee replacement in the next five years, due to my physical activity levels and the knee having been shattered in the accident. Having moved to Cape Town and getting to live an amazing life with 'my person' awakened feelings I had previously packed away in deep dark corners of my mind's attic. By dusting them off and facing my fears through therapy, exercise and a healthy lifestyle, I've been able to file them away, put them behind me and move forward.
A WILL & A WAY
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
TWO YEARS AGO, 31 YEAR OLD FILMMAKER, HELGA BARKHUIZEN WAS INVOLVED IN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT THAT RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF HER LEG. DEALING WITH HER INJURY STARTED FROM THE VERY SPLIT SECOND IT HAPPENED WHICH HAS LED HER ON AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. HELGA SHARES HER INSPIRING STORY.
A LIFE CHANGING MOMENT
“The accident happened on the 13th of December 2013. I was left with a traumatic lower left leg amputation, right femur and fibula fracture, shattered right knee and all my ligaments and tendons torn. I was awake when the accident happened. In reality I was awake through the entire ordeal which left me stunned and calm at the same time. I knew from having had little, but some medical training, that my leg was not coming back and that I would have to deal with that fact immediately. An ambulance that was filling up at the petrol station was on scene immediately. They got me out of the car and drove me back to Beaufort-West where my left leg had to undergo its first surgery to grab more skin in order to cover my knee to stop it from bleeding out. Following that surgery, they flew me to Vincent Pallotti Life Hospital in Pinelands. All further surgeries (four in total) and two months of rehabilitation took place during my stay 22
2016 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
there. The doctors informed me of my right leg injuries at Vincent Pallotti after waking up the next morning. I felt that the worst was over. The injuries had been sustained and being in hospital meant that I would get better.
THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
Having been raised in a home where being strong and finding a solution to a problem prior to asking for help formed the foundation for my will to carry on. This coupled with the knowledge that by holding onto my faith and with the help of my family and a few incredible friends it would be difficult but possible to return to Johannesburg, move into a smaller home and carry on with life. Physically I am not training with a physio. I am enrolled in Adventure Boot Camp and train with the love of my life, Ulrich, at night doing swimming, cycling, rowing and weight training sessions. I also try my hand at a couple of other of things including mountain biking and paddle
I intend to finish projects. Get married, have kids, be proud of what I’ve achieved, what has been achieved with others and grow as a person. The rest (studying, becoming a pilot, etc.), as they say, will come. This is one experience of many. In truth, it changed my life’s direction, yet brought me back to who I truly am and am meant to be. Life is an accumulation of many instances. How we react to them and who we are after facing those instances is what truly makes us unique and sets the tone for what is to come.
#IAMGRATEFUL “Being grateful isn’t realized through losing something. It is realized from being truly humble. From appreciating the little things: ‘I can see. I can breathe and taste. I can feel. I can walk, run, talk and hear.’ Our senses are the most valuable items we own and yet are overlooked. Nothing is promised or owed – not health, wealth, faith or assets. Celebrate life! Celebrate another day, waking up, being able to share it with others, that others may share it with you.”

Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon its is the third largest athletics brand in the country. Many of South Africa’s elite athletes have launched their careers through the SPAR Challenge series, with runners like Rene Kalmer and Irvette van Zyl making their mark while still running as juniors. In an environment where women’s sporting achievements are largely underreported, the Challenge Series has been an opportunity for the top runners to receive the recognition they richly deserve. The SPAR Grand Prix was launched in 2007 to consolidate the five SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge races into a single series for elite athletes. It has proved highly successful, with South Africa’s top runners vying for the top spot and raising the profile of each of the 26

five races, which are held in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg. Four of the six runners who have won the SPAR Grand Prix have either qualified, or are in the process of qualifying, for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year, and Kalmer and Van Zyl both took part in the London Olympics in 2012. Rene Kalmer has won the SPAR Grand Prix title three times and Irvette van Zyl has won it twice. Poppy Mlambo won the second title. The ebullient Mapaseka Makhanya won in 2013, and the road running twins, Diana-Lebo and Lebogang Phalula took the title in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Kalmer said she was very excited about the mentorship programme. “I
think it’s awesome that we are going to mentor some of the junior runners,” she said. “I feel privileged to be able to give something back.” She said the junior runners would find that running was not always plain sailing, but their mentors would be there to help them through the bad patches. “The juniors will travel to the SPAR races with us, so we will be able to advise them and to help them with training programmes and race tactics. I think we will be like a helpline for the juniors. It is all part of building for the future,” said Kalmer. Ian Laxton, founder and coordinator of the SPAR Grand Prix, said the SPAR Challenge Series had been a beacon of light for woman runners of all ages. "Every single athlete considers these

races to be the equivalent of national championships,” said Laxton. “SPAR has assisted numerous runners establish and consolidate their careers in an environment where there is little opportunity other than trying to get into races overseas or moving up to ultra distances. The 10km distance is perfect because it caters for both established world-class runners as well as youngsters trying to make their mark. “Moving into its second decade, the SPAR Grand Prix is again opening the door for elite runners to earn big prize money, attract sponsors, run world class times, compete with international athletes coming into South Africa and offering them a unique opportunity to compete in world-class events without men. And now the addition of the junior-mentorship element will assist South African running to have a new generation of world class runners to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Rene, Elana Meyer and the Phalulas,” said Laxton. SPAR Marketing Executive Mike Prentice welcomed the mentorship programme. “The SPAR Challenge races and the SPAR Grand Prix are among our most important sponsorships,” said Prentice. “The SPAR Grand Prix has been going for 10 years now, and it has gone from strength to strength. With this programme, we will ensure that the current high standards will be maintained in the future, and our SPAR Grand
Prix winners will be part of an exciting development programme.” The prize money for the SPAR Grand Prix has been increased, with the winner taking home R160 000. The runner-up will receive R53 000 and the third-placed athlete R32 000. There are cash prizes for the top 15 athletes. There are also cash prizes for the top runners in the junior, veteran, master and grand master categories. Prize money for 2016 amounts to a whopping R405 000. In another innovation, the winner of each race will be paid a bonus of R10 000, in addition to the race prize money. The first race in the 2016 SPAR Grand Prix Series was the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge which took place on 1 April 2016. This was followed by the Port Elizabeth leg on 7 May and the Durban leg on 5 June. Up next will be the Pretoria leg which takes place on 3 September. 2013 PRETOR IA

2016 WHO WILL WIN THE 2016 GRAND PRIX SERIES?
The SPAR Grand Prix is 10 years old! Started in 2007 to consolidate the five SPAR Ladies 10km Challenge races into a single series for elite athletes, the annual SPAR Grand Prix is now the most prestigious road running series in South Africa. It is the only competition of its kind in local road running. Outstanding women athletes accumulate points over the five SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge races and thereby become eligible for cash prizes at the end of the series. Total prize money in 2016 is just over R405 000! The SPAR Grand Prix attracts women runners of all ages by offering prizes across four age categories as well as the open category: the age categories are juniors, 4049 years, 50-59 years and over 60 years. While the SPAR Grand Prix encourages elite women athletes to compete for big prizes, the five SPAR Ladies Challenge events over 5km and 10km still cater for runners and walkers of all abilities and offer everyone a chance to test themselves against their own personal goals, whatever they may be.

EATING WELL DOES NOT NEED TO MEAN EATING BORING, BLAND FOOD AND RENOWNED BLOGGER LAVERNE VERMEULEN IS OUT TO PROVE IT! FOLLOWING HER LOW CARB LIFESTYLE GUIDE IS GOING TO BE FUN AND SURPRISINGLY EASY. By Laverne Vermeulen
“I
was the typical overweight child that became an overweight girl and eventually a clinically obese woman. I became a professional dieter. I tried every diet I heard of, even the ridiculous ones like the cabbage soup and oatmeal diet. I tried starvation and the only diet that has ever stuck is the low-carb diet. It allowed me to eat food that I enjoy and after the first two weeks I stopped having carb withdrawals and cravings and ended up losing 50Kgs. I can honestly say that losing weight changed my life in ways that I cannot even begin to explain. Everything changed for me. I saw things so differently when I stopped having my weight as an excuse. It’s possible. I did it and I know you can do it too. 32

I am not a dietician but I have done extensive research and customized this diet plan slightly to exclude ridiculously expensive items. Some items like artificial sugar, also known as the devil to some, made it bearable to make the transitions. You can exclude it if you like. The recipes are simple and the workouts are for beginners and can be done at home. The meals and snacks are all interchangeable and is a not as restrictive as some low carb eating plans which I found very hard to maintain and in the end would quit and give up. I would suggest taking a multivitamin while following this diet plan.”

COOKI
NG TIPS
The microwave is your friend, if you are looking for an easy way to cheat your way to 10 minute meals. Another thing I love is freezer bags. They have double duty use. I use them to freeze everything from soup to muffins. I also use them to cook all my veggies. In fact when I want to cook curries or stews for my family, I even use the bags to par-cook the potatoes which drastically reduces my time at the stove. Another item I can highly recommend is an omelette maker from Tupperware. They are GENIUS! You can pop them in your bag and carry eggs, 2 mushrooms, 4 cherry tomatoes and a bit of grated cheese to work and make a fantastic omelette at work in less than 5 minutes. They are very inexpensive too at under R100. The freezer bags can be bought from any supermarket. If you don’t have a cupcake maker get one – it will make your life so much easier.

B
y nature I am a very happy person but about two years ago I fell into a deep depression, losing all motivation to carry on. All my focus was directed on financial problems, marriage troubles and health issues to name but a few. My thoughts were consumed by ‘everything’ that seemed to be wrong in my life and my perception of what others had and what I did not have. Now you can imagine what a negative impact this had on my life, it's like a rollercoaster of negativity that is almost impossible to stop. After many months of sitting in a hole and feeling sorry for myself, I decided that I could not go on like this. I made a decision to change my way of thinking and through this process found five ways to be happy again.
ANNA’S 5 WAYS TO HAPPINESS 01
Change Your Focus
Let's journey to a moment in time when you were in the market to buy a new car? What were the first steps you took? Before anything, you made a decision that you wanted a new car, right? You then took action by doing research and going for test drives until the elements of a specific vehicle checked all of your boxes. Your mind made up, you got ready for the big moment. But then as the days go by before your purchase, you start to notice the same vehicle pop up around every corner. Why is this? Just a couple of days ago you hardly noticed any of them and now they seem to be everywhere. It’s because of a shift in your focus. The lesson learnt? We attract what we focus on most, whether it is positive or negative. If we constantly focus on the problems and ‘mistakes’ in our lives, we allow them to become larger, taking up and wasting unnecessary space and time. If the mind is a garden and thoughts are the seeds, it’s the focus that makes them grow. Want to find purpose and true happiness? Shift your focus onto the things that bring joy and they will increase. What are
you focused on most – your pain, your symptoms? Or are you focused on what brings joy into your life?
02
Weed Negativity from Your Mind
If your mind is a like fertile garden, anything you plant in it will grow. Negative seeds will produce negative fruit and positive seeds will produce positive fruit. In order to sustain a healthy vibrant garden (in this case, your mind), you need to constantly weed out all the negativity from it. Negative seeds (your thoughts) come in various shapes and sizes, identifying and getting rid of them at an early stage, is essential to the health of the garden (your mind). Weeds (thoughts) come in various forms of negative affirmations: “I am a failure, I’ll never have enough money, I don't deserve to be happy, and I can never get it right.” Left unattended, these thoughts shoot deep roots that create dense foliage that can cloud our judgment, giving root to even more negativity. Everything that has ever been, was first created in the mind before it was manifested in reality. With our minds we have the ability to create or destroy from a single thought; it is what we do with these thoughts that ultimately shapes who we become. You have the power to decide if you are going to nurture these negative thoughts or if you are going to replace them with more empowering, positive ones. There is nothing more beautiful, or powerful than a mind stirred by positivity and purpose.
03
Stop Negative Self-Talk
Firstly become aware of negative selftalk and how it influences your behaviour. Imagine your everyday ‘mind-talk’ being broadcasted over a radio channel so everyone – including you – can hear your every thought or your every affirmation. Would you still be tuned into that frequency or would you hastily change
the channel? Or maybe you could ask yourself if you would stay friends with a person who talks to you the way you talk to yourself? Um, maybe not. As I said earlier – everything starts with a thought, and thoughts influence our feelings which in turn influence our behaviour. For example, if we think that we are incompetent or unworthy (negative thought) we create feelings of low selfesteem and ultimately a depressed state (feeling). Because of our depressed state we start to act (behaviour) in an unempowering negative way aligned to that state. This in turn reinforces our ‘mindtalk’ that we are unworthy of greatness or happiness. The higher your sense of self-worth the better you are able to cope with challenges and upsets. Again, you need to constantly weed your garden, plant new positive thoughts, and focus on them through affirmations like: “I deserve to be happy”, “I am a success” or “I am worthy and beautiful”. Once these seeds start to grow, your confidence grows and you can start to go after bigger goals and dreams with the knowledge that you have the ability within yourself to achieve them.
04
Live a Life of Gratitude
To live a life of gratitude you need to understand what it means to have a heart of gratitude. People that exude gratitude tend to experience more optimism, joy and enthusiasm. They have a deeper appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, live a more fulfilled life and feel as though they lack nothing. Gratitude however does not always come naturally. In today's fast paced lives with a focus on ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ we have cultivated a culture of always wanting more, focused on what we don’t have, rather than on what we do have. We tend to miss out on the good things in life, the people and even moments that could potentially change our lives. Making gratitude a priority in your life not only gives you new perspective but frees you from focusing on what you lack, 2016 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

in terms of human labels for success, to rather focusing on what you do have. This gives you the power to better understand your own unique makeup and desires. Intentionally developing a grateful outlook helps you to see the good and acknowledge that these things are truly gifts that we are all fortunate to receive.
HOW DO YOU BECOME MORE GRATEFUL? Begin and end each day by saying thank you. As you wake up in the morning, take a moment of quiet introspection, think of everything you can be thankful for in that day. List 5 people you are grateful for. Pick up the phone and call – not Whatsapp – them and tell them that you are blessed and grateful that they are in your life. Do it now. Count your blessings of the day. Before you go to bed, write down what you are thankful for, for that specific day as well as what is still to come. Call it into action by saying thank you.
These exercises will help you develop a greater appreciation for all that is good in your life. In fact, people who routinely express gratitude enjoy better health and greater happiness.
05
Live a Life of Giving
Giving starts from the heart and when you give or help another human being, you naturally experience a sense of fulfilled purpose and joy. By giving what you have without expecting anything in return, you start to live a life of meaning. There is something strange that happens when we give; it is as if by some miracle our own lives seem to become more fulfilled, more enduring. When our action of giving changes the lives of others we set in motion events we could never comprehend and we find ourselves in better health, more at peace and experiencing a deep sense of happiness. That is the magic of selfless giving. I’ll end off with a quote from Kahlil Gibran: “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”

T
he correct shoe needs to be considered very carefully as this will be your biggest expense and perhaps the one element that can seriously reduce the likelihood of suffering from injuries. If you do not run a lot, your feet and joints will be under a lot of immense impact forces. You'll be around three times your body weight when walking and nearly six times your body weight when running. Therefore it is imperative that you choose a good pair of running/walking shoes that work for you. Be sure to choose running shoes that fit and give you adequate support in all the right places for your particular running gait/style. Unfortunately there isn't a pair of running shoes that exists that is perfect for everyone. Different people require different fitting running shoes.
7 KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING YOUR RUNNING SHOES: 01
Running shoes come in three main forms: Control, Neutral and Cushioned.
Control shoes – for the over pronator: Motion control footwear emphasizes medial support by having dual density midsoles, roll bars or foot bridges. This medial (inside support) support slows the rate of over pronation. An example of a motion control shoe would be the Mizuno Wave Inspire for mild over pronation. Stability Shoes – for the neutral or slight pronator: Stability footwear combines cushioning features and support features into its design. The Mizuno Wave Rider is a great example of this type of shoe. Cushioned Shoes – for the neutral or under pronator: Cushioned footwear emphasizes enhanced shock dispersion in its midsole and/or outsole design. Many shoe companies add materials to the heel and forefoot areas to enhance
the cushioning properties of the shoe i.e. Wave, gel, air etc. An example of a cushioned running shoe would be the Mizuno Wave Enigma.
02
03
Ensure that there is correct support in the heel counter to stabilise the heel and reduce movement. Stability in the midsection of the shoe to help reduce medial and lateral movement.
04
Cushioning in the midsole, offering a plush underfoot feel and comfortable ride whilst running.
05
Outsole durability and foot guidance through the gait-cycle when running.
06
07
Ensuring the correct fit and that you have an index finger’s space in the front when the shoe is fitted. How does it feel? Pretend you are blind folded. If it feels right then you are on track to enjoying your running and walking knowing that you have the right shoe.
REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY
Leading technology has allowed Mizuno Footwear to remain the overall lightest product footwear on the market without sacrificing cushioning and support for the runner. Mizuno Wave Technology is inspired by nature. Wave is a unique midsole technology that provides both cushioning and stability. Wave’s unique shape absorbs and disperses the impact at foot strike, which results in a smoother, more cushioned feel on every step. Their U4IC Midsole Technology is a unique
midsole compound providing high comfort and performance, while being extremely lightweight. They have also innovated Dynamotion Fit, a highly advanced motion capture and biomechanics technology that works with your foot throughout the gait cycle.

ENHANCED FITNESS EXPERIENCE
In addition to tracking all of the best all-day activity stats you have come to expect from Fitbit, Fitbit Blaze was built with next-generation features to help you take your workouts to the next level: • FitStar Personal Trainer on-screen workouts delivers guided instructions and animated images to three of the most popular personal trainer workouts from FitStar: Warm It Up (8 minutes), 7 Minute Workout, and 10 Minute Abs. Each workout is free and can be accessed at any time with no app or Smartphone required, offering a fast, effective workout you can do anywhere. • Connected GPS helps you train smarter by delivering real-time exercise stats like distance, pace and minutemile split times when connected to a smartphone’s GPS. After each workout, stats sync wirelessly to the
Fitbit dashboard to let you review your route, speed and elevation in more detail. • PurePulse continuous, wrist-based heart rate tracking helps maximise any training routine with simplified heart rate zones to help you maintain workout intensity and better track calories burned during each workout. PurePulse also provides all-day insights into overall health, including resting heart rate and heart rate trends over time, all without an uncomfortable chest strap. • Multi-sport mode lets you record specific activities like biking, cardio, running, weights, yoga and more while providing relevant, real-time performance stats to help you get the most out of each workout. PurePulse is enhanced while in Multi-sport mode for even better heart rate tracking, especially during high intensity workouts. • SmartTrack automatic exercise recognition automatically recognises and records continuous movement activities like biking, hiking and running, with general categories for aerobic workouts (i.e. Zumba, cardiokickboxing and other dance classes) and sports (i.e. tennis, basketball and soccer). It gives you more ways to stay motivated and get credit for your workouts by effortlessly recording them in the Fitbit App and automatically adding them towards weekly exercise goals.

HOTTEST HAIR TREND ACCORDING TO EXPERT STYLISTS, FOLLICLE HAIR ATELIER, THE SUN KISSED BALAYAGE LOOK IS THE LATEST TREND IN HIGHLIGHTING TECHNIQUES.
A
ptly named, Balayage is a French term that describes the sweeping method of colour application applied to get this natural highlighted look. Instead of using traditional foils or a cap the stylist uses a free hand technique to paint sections of hair resulting in a natural, casual and less symmetrical or predictable look. Balayage can be applied to short pixie cuts as well as longer hair but the effect of this uninhibited colour application is optimally shown on longer hair such as the new long bob – another 2016 hair trend favourite. “Not only does this work on all lengths, but it suits every age too,” says Follicle Hair’s Cornel Nel. “This style’s versatility means that when we look at product recommendations there is quite a wide variety of products to choose from
that will suit every hair type including Joico, Kevin Murphy, Nism and Hannon.” Cornel warns though to take extra care of your hair if you will be doing a Balayage look in the winter months. “We need to look at something more moisturizing during winter, especially when we have done any kind of chemical treatment on our hair. That would include anything from a masque straight through to a styling oil to add moisture and shine to our hair on the midlength and ends,” she says. Cornel advises using a product rich in moisture that will also soothe any itchiness on the scalp. And don’t forget sun protection for your hair all year round she warns. “UVA or UVB protection is a must – especially under our hot South African sun. We tend to invest in SPF for our skin and body but forget about our hair and its needs.”
The team at Follicle Hair Atelier believes there is beauty in everything. This belief inspired their motto; "Beauty is not just about looking good – It's a lifestyle!" Follicle Hair Atelier strives to create a comfortable yet professional environment for all of their clients, with a warm atmosphere welcoming everyone to the Follicle family. Every person, irrespective of their profession, career or culture, carries a personal label defined by their appearance. At Follicle they care for your label by taking care of your appearance. The energetic staff each brings a unique approach to everything they do in order to complete your look, from hair, makeup and nails to beauty and fashion!

YOUR SKIN EVERYDAY
YOUR SKIN IS YOUR BODY’S LARGEST LIVING ORGAN AND YET STILL WE CHOOSE TO ABUSE IT DAILY, TREATING IT AS THOUGH IT WILL FOREVER TAKE A BEATING. REALITY SHOWS US THAT WHEN ANYTHING IS NEGLECTED IT STARTS TO WITHER AND DIE, AND SO TOO WILL YOUR SKIN. HERE ARE FIVE QUICK AND SIMPLE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING YOUNGER, FRESHER AND HEALTHIER FOR LONGER. Article courtesy of The Renewal Institute

01 CLEANSE The skin being a living organism means that it will have metabolic waste products and debris which need to be removed on a daily basis. It is super important to cleanse your face a minimum of twice daily; this removes any oil, sweat and metabolic secretions. Cleansing also removes any harmful free radicals, heavy metals and pollution sitting on the surface of the skin. It is your first step to preventing premature ageing.
02 RESTORE Just as cleansing is important, so too is replacing the oils that have been removed. Day creams work by boosting the skin’s natural repair function, with the addition of stimulating active ingredients which work in the deeper layers of the skin. Your skin care regime should contain a moisturiser with an SPF for daytime wear and a night cream, one which is more targeted to treat skin ailments such as pigmentation, wrinkles and uneven texture. We highly recommend you invest in medical-grade skin care and cosmeceutical skin care. Initially, it may seem a little costly, but in the long term, the results far outweigh those of their cheaper counterparts.
03 PROTECT We can never stress enough the importance of a sunscreen. Our body requires a certain amount of sunlight every day in order to manufacture the vitamin D3 needed to function, but these days we are able to supplement our bodies with vitamin D3 and limit the damage done to our skin by excessive exposure and sunburn. Where possible avoid the sun from 10am – 4pm.
04 ADD OMEGA’S Omega-3 is one of those supplements that benefits the body as a whole and should be on everyone’s shelf. When it 72
2016 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
comes to the skin Omega-3 maintains the suppleness and hydration of the skin from inside the body, it aids in a healthy metabolism which will ensure that your skin is getting all the nutrition it requires to continuously repair and restore your skin. We only recommend high-quality Omega-3 supplements such Superba Krill which is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of Omega’s.
05 DRINK YOUR WATER Our bodies are made up of 90% water; this means that if we allow ourselves to become dehydrated we will inevitably start shrivelling up. Your body requires water in order to keep the organs and cells plumped up and fully functional, it also keeps your digestion moving which is your body’s natural waste removal system.
The more water you drink the better your body will function, it is recommended that you consume a minimum of 6-8 glasses of water per day or alternatively 1 litre of water for every 30kg of body weight. Simple changes can make a huge difference in the look, feel and longevity of the skin. If you’d like to find out more about caring for your skin as well as cutting edge skin and beauty treatments, contact Skin Renewal on 0861 754 672 or visit www.skinrenewal.co.za.
