A MESSAGE FROM
THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF TSHWANE
T
he City of Tshwane is once again a proud host to the SPAR Women’s Challenge. We are especially pleased to be associated with the 2018 race, under the theme #FindYourWingz that is about celebrating those who have found wings by helping others and doing something amazing in their everyday lives. When I first heard the theme of this year’s race, I was reminded of the words of the late Tata Nelson Mandela, when he said, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”. Especially because this theme is rooted in the belief that every woman finds her wings on a daily basis – whether it is at work, being a good mother, caring for those who cannot care for themselves, defending the defenceless or making a change in the lives of the disadvantaged 2

members of our community. This is everything that the City of Tshwane embodies. As local government, it is our primary mandate to make provision for basic human rights to our people, and as a Capital City of the Republic of South Africa, Tshwane is an indefatigable advocate of human rights and our commitment to upholding the human rights of our citizens is evident in the way in which we conduct our business of running the municipality. I would like to wish all participants the best of luck, I hope you enjoy your day out in the streets of Tshwane. See you on race day!

Racing with a Purpose
T
his year, our race theme is a call to action to everyone in our community to #FindYourWingz. This theme is rooted in the belief that every woman finds her wings on a daily basis – whether it is at work, being a good mother, caring for those who cannot care for themselves, defending the defenceless or making a change in the lives of the disadvantaged members of our community. But, once you have found your wings, it is time to help others find theirs as well. At SPAR we believe strongly in playing our part in giving back to our community. We believe in helping those who need us to find their wings and thrive. This year we would like to celebrate those who found their wings through giving back and we would like to call on each and every one of you to join us in supporting these heroes in any way we can. We want every woman running the race this year to know that by taking part in the race, you have already found your wings. No matter what obstacles you are facing, we encourage you to draw inspiration from the 25 000 women running and walking alongside you in solidarity. Celebrate each other, learn from one another and support one another so that we can all truly work together to make a difference.
Among the heroes that get involved every year and who have helped both our race and the initiatives we support take flight over the years, are our race sponsors. Without them we would not be able to bring the women of Pretoria together for this remarkable race and provide much needed aid to our race beneficiaries. To our existing sponsors, thank you for your unwavering support year after year – and to our new sponsors, we hope you find your wings through this race and we look forward to a long relationship with you. We believe that each of us can always strive to do more, help more, and give more. As part of the larger SPAR family, we thank everyone who enters our race year after year to help us to make a difference. We hope that when you cross the finish line and receive one of our iconic medals, that you feel as though you have found your wings by achieving something for yourself and by paying it forward to help others.
See you on race day!

A MESSAGE FROM THE RACE ORGANISERS
We challenge you all to
W
e are born with a purpose. Each human being comes into this world with endless potential. The power to achieve beyond belief – and when you reach your goals and pay it forward to others, you find your wings! This year we are challenging every person who runs our race to dig deep, overcome their challenges and find their wings. Why do so many of us never reach our true potential? Why do some manage to achieve success while others remain below their full potential? Not to mention reaching beyond it! This is because they need YOUR help to find their wings. To truly thrive, we must thrive together. Many of us are so lucky to have found our true calling and to have reached the goals we set for ourselves. This puts us in a very blessed minority and as women, we need to reach out and support those who are not as fortunate.

2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
In planning and executing the race every year, we see so many everyday women, top runners, women working for our beneficiary charities and members of our own organising committee making a difference, excelling and breaking down the boundaries that they face. This is not just a race or Gauteng locationbased phenomena, it is happening on a nationwide scale and it is having far reaching effects. So we have to do our part to make sure that this doesn’t happen for only a few and look at how can we collaboratively encourage success for every member of our community. With this in mind, we would like to extend a special word of thanks to everyone who has played their part over the years in helping the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge find its wings. This includes the SPAR store owners, everyone at head office and our valued sponsors, each member of our race organising
committee and the thousands of race supporters across Pretoria – the parents, husbands, wives and friends and general cheerleaders. Without the support that you have given us over the years, none of what we truly achieve with this race would be possible. Every year our race provides much needed support to our beneficiaries, a platform for celebrating community heroes who help others find their wings, a day out for women of all walks of life and the opportunity to find your own wings simply through the achievement of finishing the race. This year’s race and our #FindYourWingz theme celebrates you and challenges you to pay it forward and help others thrive and reach their full potential once you have found yours!
See you on race day!

The feeling of camaraderie, pride and happiness as 25 000 women crossed the finish line in a sea of coral was something unique that we could only have experienced together. This was a day that everyone who was there will treasure for years to come. Take a look back at some of the moments where we were #BetterTogether at the 2017 SPAR Women’s Challenge Pretoria race.

Finding your wings means allowing yourself to try. If you fall, grow your wings on your way down. Once you’ve earned your own wings, never allow anybody to steal them – use your wings and fly!
You should never see disappointment and defeat as discouraging but rather as a fresh start. That is when you need to find your wings to navigate your path in life through a different vision to reach your destination.
We believe we all begin our journey of life with a full set of wings, those wings give us a chance to rise above ourselves and discover new horizons. If the path you are on does not feel like the path you chose – fly, rise high above it and give yourself a new perspective of your life to find your wings!
Christien van der Merwe
Daan du Toit
Paul Kirby
Finding your wings means taking control and becoming the pilot of your own life. For me it means using my abilities for the first time to do new and exciting things and give myself permission to feel and experience freedom by taking back my life.
To me, finding your wings means to soar with wings of an eagle above challenges and obstacles encountered in your race for life.
I believe we all begin our journey in life with a full set of wings. Somewhere along our path, our wings may be clipped but everyone has the ability to find them again, in good times and bad.
Andre Gobey
Rhona Scheppel
Richard Scheppel
Finding your wings means finding your true direction in life and then helping others to find theirs. They may not be sure of which direction is the right one and we can help each other find the right path.
Finding your wings means being an earthly angel who helps people to achieve their goals. What we can do for each other can make a real difference to the world around us. No one walks the earth alone – we must all help each other.
Once a person has found their wings, there is no limit to what they can achieve, so make sure you #FindYourWingz.
Natasha Venter
Howard Muir
To me, #FindYourWingz means finding your inner peace and accepting yourself for who you are. Once you have achieved this you will fly like a beautiful butterfly.
Find your wings means that we have an opportunity to help others. Just remember there is someone out there that is more than happy with less than what you have. If we all pay it forward with our wings maybe we could make a difference in someone else's life!

RACE
HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN THE GRAND PRIX LAST YEAR? Humbled is the word. The whole experience brought me to my knees numerous times. I almost feel like I am on the ground because of this Grand Prix; it has forced me to perceive life in a very different way; a much more noble way. I am humbled!
YOU HAVE BECOME KNOWN FOR YOUR SIGNATURE “KICK” – HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT? I’ve heard people referring to the ‘kick’ a few times but it was never something I consciously decided to do. Friends of mine brought it to my attention when they saw a YouTube video of me running the 2017 ASA Snr 5000m final race because they could not explain to me what was so
peculiar about my “final lap kick”. I watched it and I realised that this might have been the race that gave people the idea that this was my signature move. I have never thought my running technique to be any different from other athletes’ but I obviously can’t see myself running, people from the side-lines do. I guess my way of running is determined by conditions; I never really plan to kick…it just happens.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY AS A SUCCESSFUL RUNNER AND AS A PERSON? I like to think that I am living a normal life that anyone lives. I’ve had my challenges
2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE 17
RACE
and overcame them like everyone else. I grew up in an amazing family, with my mother, a single parent raising me and my two sisters. I started running at the tender age of five and because my family is very sport orientated I played a variety of sports growing up. I started training with Tannie Sarina, my current running coach, about eight years ago. I struggled a lot, with my health but overcame this challenge and started performing better by the year. My coach and I decided to give the SPAR Women’s Challenge a shot with a race or two last year and I ended up completing the full Grand Prix series. I struggled to adapt to this entirely new routine but eventually did. I am still learning with every race but the process is made easier for me by my supportive family, coach, friends, and staff – KovsieAthletics and KovsieSports.
WHAT DOES #FINDYOURWINGZ MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY? I consider myself an eagle and I believe everyone is capable of flying as high as one wishes; they just need to find their wings to do so. Like I mentioned; I am still in the process of learning and I am also trying to find my own wings. You can become whoever you want to be; no one or nothing should decide your fate. Your goals are your wings; you have to do everything in your power to find them, achieve them and hold onto them. I am aiming to find my own wings in everything that I do this year!
WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED YOU FIND YOUR WINGS ALONG THE WAY IN YOUR CAREER? My family, coach (Tannie Sarina), boyfriend, Oom DB and Oom Danie (management), Johan Cronje (representative), doctor (Tannie Sorita), my friends, my training partners, the Kovsie community and many more. There are so many people
18
2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
who contributed to my career that cannot be mentioned, but I am deeply thankful for what they have done in my life. My career’s foundation is made out of gold and diamonds which took so long to be crafted and perfected; I am indeed honoured to be working with these individuals every day. I would also like to extend my gratitude and thanksgiving to my primary schools’ coach Susan Vlotman and the late Mr IM Botha (principle) who took a crucial decision at some point of my life to secure my future and mould it to what it is now. My high school coach Mr Rufus Botha has contributed immeasurably to my athletics career. All of these people have helped me find my path in life, and I am grateful.
DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO HELP AND SUPPORT OTHER JUNIOR RUNNERS (TO HELP THEM FIND THEIR WINGS) NOW
THAT YOU HAVE BECOME SUCCESSFUL? IS THERE SOMETHING THAT YOU DO ALONG THESE LINES? Definitely! I find pleasure in mentoring younger runners and guiding them on finding their feet in life. To contribute to someone’s successes is the greatest gift that God has to give to mankind and that is why I find a purpose in helping those who need my help. Be it with training, counselling, motivational talks, advice or anything that I can help out with. The future of our country’s athletics is in their hands. If we do not nurture them and set them in the right direction, we have simply misled and let the country down. I help out where I can to make sure that the younger generation finds its wings and I have committed myself to continue helping them.

FINDING MY
Wingz BY GIVING HOPE By Sandy Cipriano
SANDY CIPRIANO, THE FOUNDER OF CUPCAKES OF HOPE, A BENEFICIARY OF THE PRETORIA SPAR WOMANS CHALLENGE, TELLS THE STORY ABOUT HOW SHE FOUND HER WINGS BY HELPING OTHERS – AND HOW WHEN PAID FORWARD, HOPE SPREADS LIKE THE WINGS OF AN ANGEL.

his year’s ‘slogan’ #FindYourWingz resonates deeply with me as I found my wings when I started Cupcakes of HOPE in 2012. I was deeply touched by the cancer journey of a three year old named Chiara and seeing her fighting this battle made me realise that I wanted to make a difference and help other children who were going through this difficult journey. I did not have the money to help but I had two things even more valuable than that – a bit of time and a lot of love. That was the beginning of my amazing journey as a Cupcake Angel. It all started at Rio Sol, our little restaurant in Vereeniging. I asked the whole community to bake and donate cupcakes to help raise funds for children with cancer. It was just amazing to see how the whole community came together to ‘bake’ a difference – from three year old toddlers to 90 year old grannies baking at the old age homes. We even had firemen and policemen who baked and decorated the most amazing cupcakes. The only requirement was that the cupcakes had to be made with love. Since then, with the funds raised we have been able to help more than 1 000 cancer patients by either

paying for their medical or other day-today expenses. One of the first big donations we made was to 15 year old Gerhard who lost his leg due to cancer and needed R70 000 for a new prosthetic leg. On the day I met Gerhard, he was sitting in his wheel chair, very shy but also very excited to get his new leg. It was so special to be there to see him take his first few steps. When it was time to say good bye I walked over to give him a big hug and suddenly he said: ‘Sjoe Tanie, maar jy is lekker kort’ (Wow, you are very short). Everyone in the room started laughing but it brought me to tears because right in front of me was a young confident boy, standing on his own two feet, no longer looking up at everyone but looking me straight in the eye, ready to conquer the world. That was the day that I decided that I needed to register Cupcakes of HOPE and help many more children like Gerhard. Our slogan is ‘Become a Cupcake Angel, it’s the SWEETEST way to SAVE a life’. I now realise that Cupcakes of HOPE is not just about saving cancer patients’ lives but that our cause is also saving the lives of our amazing volunteers. I get so many messages from our Cupcake Angels who have lost a loved one to cancer telling me that through the work they do for our organisation they have found their purpose in life again. I can see that they are finding their wings again. So many of our Cupcake Angels host
cupcake events in honour of a loved one they have lost and in doing so, they are also helping children who are going through a very tough time. I can tell you that being a Cupcake Angel has been an amazing journey. I have met the most amazing cancer warriors working hand in hand with Cupcake Angels across South Africa and one of the most rewarding things is seeing how our Cupcake Angels find their wings again and spread love across our beautiful country. Remember all you need is a bit of time and loads of LOVE to make a difference. I hope my story inspires you to also be that ’spark’ in your community, and go #FindYourWingz. As Mother Teresa said: ‘Do little things with great love.’” This year National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer takes place on the 29th of September at 80 malls across South Africa. For more information on how you can become a Cupcake Angel or play your part in helping Cupcakes of HOPE, visit www.cupcakesofhope.org.

A CUPCAKE JOURNEY A cupcake is not JUST a cupcake, each single cupcake helps five different people find their wings: 1. The amazing baker who uses her God-given talent to bake the most delicious cupcakes. This is her labour of love. 2. The volunteers who work at the Cupcake of HOPE events who, when opening each box of cupcakes are in absolute awe at the amount of love and creativity that each cupcake is made with. 3. Each member of the public who contributes their R10 donation for a delicious cupcake, knowing that their donation is going to help a child with cancer. 4. The little cancer patient that will be able to receive the medical treatment that they so desperately need thanks to the proceeds of our cupcake sales. 5. Sandy and her team. For them, one little cupcake feeds their soul as they step back and see the entire cupcake journey and the love that is spread along the way.
SANDY’S JOURNEYS OF HOPE There are so many stories of hope that Sandy could share. Stories of the children they’ve helped and of the parents and caregivers who in turn found their wings along the way. Here are just two of these amazing journeys. Visit the Beneficiaries page on the Cupcakes of HOPE website to read more of these inspiring stories.
Kegan
“Kegan was the very first cancer patient that I helped in 2009. Kegan was diagnosed when he was only 18 months old with tumours on his spine. Doctors said that he would not make it to his second birthday BUT we are pleased to say that we celebrated his tenth birthday last year! I always share Kegan's story with newly diagnosed families because it shows them that they must NEVER give up HOPE...miracles happen EVERY day.”
McKayla
Kegan
“We met the family in 2014. McKayla’s family were able to start earning their own money when they discovered their talent for baking while attending one of our Cupcake Topper days. In the afternoons both parents would be playing around with the fondant and making stunning cupcake toppers with their daughters. They were very talented and in no time started their own baking business to earn an income after McKalya’s father lost his job. Little McKayla assisted us during the SPAR race in 2016... such a brave little warrior!”

LIFE
LETSHEGO ON THE SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE WHAT DOES FINDING YOUR WINGS MEAN TO YOU?
For me, it means being able to fall, dust myself off and try again. It means being able to look past the pain, the sadness, adversity and find a reason to continue living life to the full. It means finding a reason to smile and laugh and just simply to give life my best shot. #FindYourWingz means that even after losing Gugu, I am able to wake up every morning and be the best Mom I can be to my daughter, Lelethu.
WHO IN YOUR LIFE HAS INSPIRED YOU TO FIND YOUR WINGS? Definitely my mom – and she continues to do so on a daily basis. She has supported every single thing I’ve done in my life and whenever things haven’t worked out as planned, she’s always been there to support me. When I fall, she’s there to pick me up and most importantly to help me find my wings. When I get impatient with life, she reminds me that ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’. I could easily say my mom is my wings but in fact she helped me to find my own and to fly.
HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE IN BETWEEN THE DAY TO DAY BUSYNESS OF LIFE TO MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF AND TO STAY UPLIFTED AND INSPIRED?
Everything in my life is treated as a meeting. I literally diarise every single thing from work meetings, to my training sessions, to my daughters swimming and gymnastics lessons, to coffee dates with friends, to playdates, to friends weddings and even my hair appointments. That’s the only way I juggle my busy lifestyle. I do wish I could diarise sleep though, ha-ha!
WILL YOU BE TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR’S SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE RACE? ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD IT?
Yes I am. I’ve taken part in the Pretoria race twice before I’m really looking forward to participating this year!
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR ALL THE WOMEN WHO WILL BE TAKING PART ON HOW THEY CAN FIND THEIR WINGS? You can do and achieve anything you set your mind to. In fact, the sky is the limit when it comes to what a woman can do. I personally believe women have a special super power. When you think you can’t, you actually can. You’re stronger than you think you are. When you fall, get up, dust yourself off and FLY again. That’s our super power. We know how to get up and fly. 28

Stroomop! ACTRESS AND SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE BRAND AMBASSADOR, DONNALEE ROBERTS IS PASSIONATE ABOUT CHANGING THE WORLD THROUGH STORIES THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO RESONATE WITHIN EACH OF US. THE MESSAGE OF HER LATEST FILM, STROOMOP AND THE 2018 RACE THEME #FINDYOURWINGZ ARE CLOSELY LINKED AND ARE PROOF OF THE POWER THAT THE RIGHT MESSAGE CAN HAVE.
T
he universe often has a beautiful way of naturally spreading Zeitgeist (the German saying for the universe to be in spiritual sync). The theme for this year’s SPAR Women's Challenge, #FindYourWingz and the main message for Donnalee’s new film Stroomop – #RaakVerlore #VindJouself – is powerful proof of this Zeitgeist. “I love that the SPAR women's Challenge finds wonderfully unique themes each year. Each one as powerful and as important as the previous one – dynamic, honest and filled with surprises, the unpredictable, vulnerability, purity and bravery – something that each woman has inside her,” says Donnalee. “The heart of the race, to celebrate

each other and to champion each other on this journey called life, is the reason why I take part year after year.” Stroomop is about five very unique women who are each drowning in their own realities, and the adventure they embark on forces them to find inner strength, find self-acceptance, find their voice and find their wings – as the SPAR women's Challenge would say. They learn that they are and have all they need within them to face and overcome any challenge or situation life might send their way. In Stroomop we meet these five women each holding up a fake facade of perfection on the outside, when meanwhile they are broken on the inside. The more they are faced with life and death challenges on this adventure while conquering the Orange River, the more they are beaten and bruised on the outside but find healing on the inside. This story, says Donnalee can be compared to the way in which the race aims to make a difference to the community by uniting women each year. “The SPAR Women’s Challenge has such a massive impact on women, to uplift and to celebrate one another and year after year I am so overwhelmed and grateful to be part of this amazing beautiful race. To join all these women who are brave enough to swim upstream (stroomop)! To find my wings, to help others find theirs so we can fly together, stronger.” The five unique, diverse women, in Stroomop are all somewhere 32

on what Donnalee calls ‘the river of life’, trying hard to keep their heads above water but drowning under the pressures of the definition of being perfect. By letting go of this definition Donnalee says, we can find our wings. “Everyone feels the pressure to be perfect. So many women are drowning under huge waves of expectations rolling over them or are just treading water, too overwhelmed to make a move. We all know these women, we are these women! I am convinced that if we could only truly see each other – each other’s hurt, difficulties and insecurities, and more importantly see and appreciate one another’s beauty, the world would become a place where, hand in hand, we could overcome the roughest waters together.” Donnalee truly believes that once we have each found our wings by letting go of superficial insecurities we can help our fellow women find theirs too. “Go ahead and pay that compliment,” she says. “A compliment is born to be given, so give it compassionately and mean it. You do not need a lot to give. You give with each honest smile. See the people around you, instead of merely noticing them in passing. Make eye contact and smile. To make someone feel worthy, beautiful and appreciated, to give them your time and to truly listen to the answer when you ask how they are doing, are some of the most precious gifts you can give!”

Finding Your Wings
WILL TAKE YOU PLACES OUMA TEMA HAS ALWAYS LOVED FASHION BUT HATED SHOPPING. FRUSTRATED BY NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND CLOTHING THAT WAS FASHIONABLE AND STYLISH THAT FIT HER, SHE STARTED MAKING HER OWN CLOTHES. IT WASN’T LONG BEFORE THE ATTENTION THAT HER CLOTHES ATTRACTED LED HER TO FOUND PLUS-FAB, A PLUS-SIZE FASHION FIRM THAT OFFERS ON-TREND AND STYLISH CLOTHING TO PLUS-SIZE WOMEN. THIS INSPIRING ENTREPRENEUR, AND 2018 RACE BRAND AMBASSADOR, TALKS ABOUT HOW SHE FOUND HER WINGS BY BRINGING OUT THE FASHIONISTA IN PLUS-SIZE WOMEN AND THE ROLE THAT LOOKING AND FEELING GOOD CAN PLAY IN HELPING OTHER WOMEN FIND THEIRS!
P
lus-Fab’s humble beginnings, from the boot of Ouma’s car and later from her garage and then a small studio is a testament to her determination and drive to turn her passion into a commercial success. She smiles as she recalls those early days and the inspiration for founding her own company. “It started when I struggled to find clothes that fit me – stylish, trendy beautiful clothes – not just what was available in my size. I could just not understand why as a plussize person I could not find the clothes that I really wanted to wear. The clothes available in sizes that fitted were not really fashionable,” Ouma says. “I did not agree with that narrative because that narrative for me said big girls don’t have a space in the fashion business and I didn’t agree with that and I wanted that situation to change. I wanted to become the change that I wanted to see.” Ouma started designing and making her own clothes for events she attended and in no time got noticed as she stood out in the crowd in designs that were eye catching, stylish and well-tailored. “I stopped going shopping because I knew I was going to come back

disappointed every time. People started telling me that they wanted the clothes I was wearing – sometimes willing to pay double what they would be paying in retail just to have something stunning to wear for a change. That is when I realised that there is a gap in the market. Plussize women wanted something beautiful, stylish and different – something that speaks to them. From there I launched Plus-Fab and it has been an incredible journey so far.” Today Plus-Fab has its own fully fledged factory, supplying stores across the country, including The Space and are stocked at major online retailers such as Spree. Ouma credits this success to the fact that fashion and wearing beautiful clothes can play a vital role in helping a woman find her wings. “My mother used to say that how you feel is how you dress so it’s very important to be aware of that. I knew with absolute certainty that I was not unhappy within myself and that I didn’t feel sad about my body – it was not being able to express who I was through something I loved so much – fashion – that was making me unhappy. Clothes really give a person confidence. When you look amazing, you feel

amazing and you feel that you can take on the world. Finding your wings is part of just living your best life and looking and feeling amazing can make a huge contribution to that.” For her personally, Ouma says that #FindYourWingz means finding the ability to just ‘be’, being able to dream and going out to achieve all your dreams because she believes that wings can really take you places. “The only thing you have to do is let them spread. Let go of all the negativity and allow your wings to take you to where you are meant to be and allow them to guide you to being who you truly are no matter what the rest of the world thinks.” Looking back on her journey and the people who helped her find her wings along the way, Ouma says that being raised in a family of love played an important role. The first wings you get in life come from your upbringing and from there, the incredible people you meet along the way can build you up even more. “If I had to describe it, I would say that your upbringing can be compared to the foundation of your wings for life that comes before you get the feathers. My family are responsible for who I am today and where I am today. From there over the years I was lucky enough to encounter inspiring and like-minded people who were the ones who added feathers to my 36

wings which allowed me to soar to even greater heights.” Having enjoyed remarkable professional success that went hand in hand with a journey of self-discovery to make her into the woman that she is today, Ouma believes strongly that all women should pay it forward and help others find their wings too. She sees herself as a product of the women who nurtured and supported her along the way and feels that it is only natural for her to do the same for others. “Helping other women goes hand in hand with finding your own success because it’s who we are. Women are naturally nurturers so that narrative of helping others, bringing other people up when they are down is not a duty or an obligation. For every young woman that I meet, I feel that it is important to always leave them feeling better about themselves and to create an opportunity for anyone anytime that I can.” Creating opportunities is what led to her involvement in the SPAR Women’s Challenge. “I met the race organiser from SPAR about five years ago bringing in some of my clients who wanted to enter the race as corporate groups. I have always loved working with SPAR and really feel passionate about the work that they do in the community. And then this year, I was approached to be a brand
ambassador. Everyone from SPAR that I have interacted with over the years has seen my journey from the foundation of my business and up. So we have walked a long road together and our relationship has come full circle now as I have the amazing opportunity to represent the race as an ambassador. I am so excited and grateful to be part of this amazing movement that is the SPAR Women’s Challenge that unites and celebrates women.” Celebrating women is a concept very close to Ouma’s heart. She feels strongly that women need to celebrate their inner beauty and strength every day and must be wary of putting themselves down. In today’s world of unrealistic expectations of beauty created by social media, Ouma’s viewpoint on self-love is the perfect antidote. “It’s very important for women to love themselves and realise that there is no such thing as the ‘perfect’ body or shape or face or skin. As long you believe this false narrative that is fed to you constantly through so many platforms, you are going to always struggle because unfortunately the world’s perception of beauty changes all the time and you’ll end up wasting energy trying to keep up. This will keep you off the path to success that you are supposed to be walking. The ultimate act of self-love is being really happy from within. Some will find you pretty and some won’t – the same way you prefer one brand over another, so find your people. If you surround yourself with people who love you just the way you are then you are winning.” She says that living your life with the intention of being kind is important to finding your wings and then lifting up those who struggling to find theirs. “What’s really important to me in my day to day interactions is the act of simply being nice. It doesn’t cost you anything. Be kind and help a sister when she needs help and really refrain from being nasty. Sometimes women can be really nasty to each other and by doing this we all become weaker because we are cutting each other down instead of helping each other find our wings and becoming an unstoppable force together.”

HOW TO
Find Your Wings By Warrior Ric
LOOKING AT THE NATURAL MARVEL OF A BUTTERFLY’S METAMORPHOSIS CAN LEAD TO INTROSPECTION THAT WILL HELP US IDENTIFY WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO FIND OUR WINGS. RACE BRAND AMBASSADOR, WARRIOR RIC SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF GOING THROUGH THE CHANGES NECESSARY FOR FINDING YOUR WINGS, REMOVING NEGATIVE ENERGY FROM YOUR LIFE AND OVERCOMING THE OBSTACLES THAT GET IN THE WAY OF LETTING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL TAKE FLIGHT!
I
have never gone out in search of butterflies. However, they often find me. I seem to come across these magnificent creatures frequently, especially during early morning jogs with my wife in our neighbourhood. Many of these beauties glide right alongside (and just in front) leading me in an enchanted morning dance where I am challenged to synchronise the dance with the pace of my run. Perhaps I am distracted by their flamboyant colours and patterns, or graceful wings that flutter so carefree. They carry me, encouraging me to go farther and faster as their beauty and effortless flight draw me in for a closer look. I am not only enamoured by the beautiful flight of the butterfly, but also by the way in 44

which they pique my curiosity and spark the imagination. The butterfly experiences one of the most miraculous transformations known to man. It is so transformative that scientists refer to it as a metamorphosis. My work as an inspirer and motivator of people and organisations is about improvement through welcoming change and overcoming challenges. The process of self-transformation is the most powerful and most effective way to accept, manage and benefit from change. The butterfly exemplifies how to take on this process beautifully! Butterflies are a reminder that selftransformation need not be traumatic. It can be as gentle as the process of evolving from a

discreet caterpillar crawling on the ground before becoming the most captivating butterfly that draws everyone’s attention mid-air. We need only take the time and courage to retreat to our own cocoons to reflect, rejuvenate and revitalise in anticipation of conquering our next goal or task. Like the butterfly, we must trust the process of retreating before embarking on the next challenge. We must see ourselves transformed while still a caterpillar going through everyday life in the trenches, and again while in our quiet spaces focused on killing negative energy and building a fortress of positivity in preparation for our next big breakthrough. We cannot begin the process of transformation if we are afraid to fly. We must first have the courage to face our fears. This type of courage comes from vision. However, it is not a vision using the naked eye. We must aspire to a vision so big and beautiful, but so far from our current comfort zone that we could never reach it as caterpillars with short legs and bellies dragging along the ground. Our vision needs bold courage, self-transformation and the will to go the distance. Presence is the key to any transformation. Oh! But to show up without all the ducks, and certainly without all of them in a row is challenging. 46
2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
To hope, like the butterfly, that you will succeed if you simply take what you’ve got (your best), and show up ready and expecting (the best). To trust that the universe will conspire in your favour because you believe in yourself and your vision. To be present knowing that you are a gift… a present to someone and to the universe. Caterpillars are the ‘before’ picture. However, the butterfly is more than just an ‘after’ picture. It is a manifestation of what is possible, and because of its stunning display and metamorphosis, it inspires other caterpillars to transform. Life does not guarantee us success. But when you are grateful for all that you have, and are willing to use what you’ve got, like the butterfly who opens her wings for the first time, you will fly. When you arrive at your next opportunity, such as the start of your SPAR Women’s Challenge route this year, be grateful for nervousness. Nerves are butterflies in your stomach. Those majestic floating marvels are a reminder of the courage needed to transform, and the most beautiful wings that are made to fly.

IF YOU LIVE IN PRETORIA, THEN YOU DEFINITELY KNOW OF RIAN VAN HEERDEN. SOME OF US KNOW HIM BEST AS THE VOICE OF THE SCENIC DRIVE AND SOME FOR HIS RECENTLY PUBLISHED BOOK, 16 DINGE WAT EK NIE MOES SÊ NIE. WE SAT DOWN WITH RIAN TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HIS BOOK, HOW HE FOUND HIS WINGS BY FINDING HIS VOICE AND THE PEOPLE WHO INSPIRED HIM ALONG THE WAY.
SITTING DOWN WITH Rian van Heerden WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE A BOOK?
It was a request from my publisher, NB uitgewers, that eventually turned into a bucket list item.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DID AFTER DECIDING THAT YOU WOULD DEFINITELY WRITE IT? I sat down and thought about my life. It was quite a sobering experience!
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN WRITING IT? Finding time.
WHAT WERE YOUR BIGGEST SOURCES OF INSPIRATION WHILE WRITING IT? My mom collected newspaper clippings
throughout the years and pasted all of these in an album. They ended up being my best inspiration!
WHAT WERE YOU MAINLY LOOKING TO ACHIEVE BY PUBLISHING THE BOOK?
Keeping to my contract with the publisher! But seriously, maybe the end game was trying to explain what the reasoning was behind some of the controversial things that I said throughout my career.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK THAT YOU READ AS A CHILD? All the books by FA Venter.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK THAT YOU READ AS AN ADULT? A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood.

LIFE
WHAT PART OF THE WRITING AND PUBLISHING PROCESS SURPRISED YOU THE MOST? That a book can actually write itself!
WHAT ABOUT THE PUBLIC REACTION TO THE BOOK HAS BEEN MOST INTERESTING FOR YOU?
The fact that there would be people that would finish reading it in a day!
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT IS NOT IN THE BOOK?
A lot of things have happened since the last chapter. But even before that, it’s very difficult to put one’s whole life down on paper. I for instance excluded my own attempts to become a pastor and the journey that led to it.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS YEAR’S SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE THEME – #FINDYOURWINGZ – AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
A great theme this year! To me it means that very specific one thing that each of us is born with that can allow you to soar. It’s your very specific uniqueness that will take you to the open skies above.
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR LIFE – WHO ARE THE THREE BIGGEST HEROES WHO HELPED YOU TO FIND YOUR WINGS?
I would say my mom to a very large degree. Also the bravery and comedic skill of my dad to turn the worst situation into something light-hearted and a lecturer of mine that challenged the status quo at a very real risk to his family.
HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IT IS TO PAY IT FORWARD AND WHAT DO YOU DO TO HELP OTHERS FIND THEIR WINGS?
Extremely important. I was involved for a number of years at Tuks FM, working with and helping to shape young broadcasters. It’s still a very big passion of mine. 50

24-YEAR-OLD VERNON BARNARD MADE HIS UNFORGETTABLE DEBUT ON THE VOICE SOUTH AFRICA IN 2016, AND HIS STAR HAS BEEN RISING RAPIDLY EVER SINCE. NO MATTER WHAT CHALLENGES LIFE THREW AT HIM, HE SET HIS MIND TO OVERCOME THEM AND LET NOTHING GET IN THE WAY OF HIS QUEST TO MAKE HIS DREAMS. THAT IS HOW HE FOUND HIS WINGS – AND THIS IS HIS STORY.
V
ernon Barnard's life story is one of hope, determination and triumph. Having been born with glaucoma, Vernon has been blind since the age of five. In spite of trying sixteen surgeries to restore his sight, efforts were unsuccessful but Vernon, with the support of his parents, went on to live a full life. He was head prefect in his matric year and throughout his younger years, Vernon dedicated himself to his two main passions – singing and motivating others. These passions are followed closely by his love of sport, particularly cricket. In 2012 he was chosen for the SA blind cricket team that competed in the World Championship in Bangalore, India. A huge honour as he was the youngest and only school boy on the team. He played for the team again in 2014 when the World Championship was hosted in Cape Town. The first time that Vernon sang in front of a crowd was in 2012 at a school talent competition. The response from the audience was overwhelming and the realisation that his love of singing brought joy to others inspired him to make music a major focus in his life and to pursue a career as a singer. Requests for CD’s started pouring in and in 2014 he released his first CD “OVERCOME” that included 15 songs. In 2016, Vernon captured the hearts and attention of the entire country when he auditioned for MNet’s The Voice SA competition. His audition performance of One Direction’s Story of My Life brought every judge to tears and within hours he became a South African household name. Finds His Wings of 16 million views. “I have had a few of these life changing moments, the biggest of them perhaps being my blind addition on the voice South Africa, considering the platform it gave me to pursue my dreams,” says Vernon. After making it to the final round of The Voice SA, Vernon was signed with Universal Music and recorded his debut single called, I Like It That Way. It was released in 2016 and soon became a hit on local radio stations even reaching the SA Top 10 and eventually becoming number 1 on the Jacaranda FM Saturday Top 20. Having captured the attention of the country, he was invited to sing the SA Anthem at the opening ceremony of the SA vs Ireland rugby test at Ellis Park in June 2016. Vernon said at the time that it was one of the greatest moments of his life. Now 24 years old, Vernon is well on his way to having a long and successful musical career. Vernon has been working on a number of singles, including, the hit song, Voel and has now released his debut album, Deur Jou Oë. He says that sometimes finding your wings comes down to the people in your life who are there to support you. “I draw my inspiration from people who are able to defy their harsh realities and overcome their obstacles, by simply believing that they can and that they are good enough. Make sure that when that life changing opportunity presents itself to you, you take it and you make it happen. It might be scary and intimidating, but it might also be your one shot. So work hard, be prepared and make sure you have no regrets. Then, I believe, you will find your wings.”

ON A DAILY BASIS AFTER BEING MOVED BY THE STORY OF RUTH IN THE BIBLE, RIËTTE DELPORT STARTED PAINTING UNDER THE NAME RUT ART. IN THE BIBLE, RUTH WAS VERY LOYAL AND LOVED GOD, AND THAT IS WHERE RIËTTE DRAWS HER STRENGTH FROM. ANGELS ARE HER INSPIRATION WHICH MADE HER THE PERFECT CHOICE FOR PRODUCING THIS YEAR’S MY RACE MAGAZINE COVER CELEBRATING OUR THEME: #FINDYOURWINGZ. WE CAUGHT UP WITH RIËTTE TO FIND OUT HOW SHE FINDS HER WINGS.

LIFE
SO MANY WOMEN TRULY WANT TO BE STRONGER AND BE EMPOWERED AND BUT THEY DON’T ALWAYS HAVE THE COURAGE TO TAKE THAT LEAP OF FAITH AND FIND THEIR WINGS
F
rom a young age, Riëtte has dreamed of creating beautiful things and has loved to be busy with her hands. Although she never had the opportunity to study art, she kept doing what she loved to do. This persistence, along with talent, hard work and determination helped her learn and develop along the way. Riëtte always knew that she was an artist inside and has always endeavoured to live out her dream. There were many challenges along the way but she had her husband’s support through it all. “He encouraged me and helped me to believe in myself enough to continue, endure and stay committed,” says Riëtte. The life of an artist is not easy and very few artists find financial freedom in their chosen paths, but for Riëtte, it’s all worth
it. “The fulfilment definitely outweighs the difficulties,” she says. “It feeds my soul on a daily basis.” The best part of her work is getting feedback from clients, fans and friends about how they have experienced healing through her work. Her advice is, “Never give up and just keep doing what you love to do!” Riëtte was delighted to be given the opportunity to create this year’s cover art. She says, “There are so many women who truly want to be stronger and be empowered and but they don’t always have the courage to take that leap of faith and find their wings.” Riëtte hopes that her participation helps our readers to take that leap and to give them the confidence to reach their full potential. Through a difficult start to life, Riëtte has found that sometimes you have to jump first and build your wings on the way down. Riëtte feels that is important for us to help other women find their wings. “We understand each other’s hearts and joys, hopes, wishes and sorrows,” she says. “We are amazing human beings and sometimes we forget that. Help someone put on her wings of courage, or wings of love, or wings of hope.” Riëtte feels that when we help each other, we can truly fly and conquer anything. Through her art, where angels are her inspiration, Riëtte hopes to do just that. After she went down a rocky road in her faith and her relationship with God, Riëtte developed a love for angels. God sent angels over her path, letting her know that she wasn’t alone and she didn’t need to do everything on her own. “He sends His angels to us daily, all we need 2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE 57
LIFE
to do is ask and they will help,” she says. Riëtte is passionate about angels because of how much they have to teach us. Riëtte believes that they bring healing to cure us and enlightenment to assist us with our daily circumstances. Rut Art is a very unique style, which Riëtte believes is still growing and changing. She has tried so many ideas over the years and from being inspired and creating many new things, her style has evolved and is still evolving. Riëtte believes that her style has a God-given signature which she is humbled to express. Riëtte was born in Durban, lived in Johannesburg until she was eight and then moved to Ladybrand in the Freestate, where she finished school. In 2002, she made the beautiful harbour town of Mossel Bay her home, where she still lives with her husband and two children, three year old Frans-André and nine year old Rika. Two miniature Schnauzers, Burgermeester and Eva, complete the family. Most of Riëtte’s time is taken up by painting but she also loves to read and when she does find herself with time to spare, pottery is her first choice. Running a marathon of this scale is not something Riëtte is used to. She says the closest thing she has done is a fun walk fund raiser at her daughter’s school every year. Riëtte grew up in an orphanage where physical exercise was used as a form of punishment so it’s not something she willingly partakes in now. “I don’t have a sporty side, I’d rather relax with a good book or swim in the sea,” she says with a laugh. Riëtte is a very busy artist these days, with a new gallery, décor and gift studio in Mossel Bay called the Yellow Door. It is in a very old historical building across the harbour on the corner of Bland and Field Streets. It was built in 1888 and was used as a hospital during the flu epidemic in 1918. The hospital was considered lucky as legend has it that no one died in the 58

hospital at that time. A ©GrandRutFaire opening celebration was held on the 25th and 26th of April 2018 at the new Yellow Door in Mossel Bay. Along with her website where orders can be made, www.rutartcreations.co, Rut Art is very active on social media. You can follow Riëtte’s on Facebook @RutArtist and on Instagram @riette_rutart. Finally, we couldn’t let Riëtte go without asking her, what it means to her to Find Your Wings. She said, “For me, it means to look within and find that inner strength to be who you are meant to be.”

HEALTHY EATING
WITH PRICES SKYROCKETING AND EVERYDAY LIFE BECOMING MORE AND MORE EXPENSIVE, IT SEEMS LIKE OUR ONCE-FAT WALLETS ARE NOW ON A STRICT DIET. EVERYDAY CHOICES BECOME MORE CHALLENGING AS WE DECIDE WHERE TO SPEND OUR MONEY. HERE ARE SOME USEFUL TIPS AND TRICKS WHICH, SHOULD COME IN HANDY WHEN TRYING TO KEEP YOUR HEALTH ON TRACK WHILE CONSIDERING THE COST BURDEN. HEALTHY LIFESTYLES SHOULD NEVER BE COMPROMISED.
For Less WHAT IS HEALTHY EATING?
Healthy eating is defined as consuming a variety of foods in the correct quantities that give us the nutrients we need in order to maintain our health, make us feel good and provide us with energy to carry out our daily tasks. Healthy eating helps decrease our risk for Non-Communicable Diseases such as Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes and Hypertension. The World Health Organisation recommends eating a diet that is low in sodium, fat and sugar and high in fruits and vegetables (at least 400g per day) to help improve health overall and decrease the risk of NCDs.

DON’T GO TO THE SHOPS HUNGRY When we are hungry we often crave foods that are not good for our health or our wallets. Make sure to eat a balanced meal or have an on-the-go snack before going to the shops. Try having something like a yoghurt, fruit, FUTURELIFE® Smart Drink, making a smoothie from FUTURELIFE® Smart food or FUTURELIFE® HIGH PROTEIN Smart food (visit www.futurelife.co.za for some great recipes), or grabbing a FUTURELIFE® High Protein LITE SmartBar to keep you satisfied and healthy whilst on your shopping journey.

BUY LOCAL, SEASONAL FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
• Apple
These foods are usually easy on the wallet as the abundance of crops usually helps to decrease the price. Seasonal fruits and vegetables often taste better too. Foods that are chilled and shipped lose flavour every step of the way – during chilling, transport and being held in warehouses.

Planning meals in advance will definitely help keep the ‘healthy you’ on track as well as save costs. Remember to buy brown vs. white, low-fat vs. full-cream and fresh and whole foods vs. processed foods. Take one day per week to plan the following week’s menu. Set up a shopping list while considering which ingredients you already have. It’s important to regularly check one’s fridge and pantry to make sure that all foods are utilised and wastage is decreased.
We often get side-tracked at the grocery store and end up buying things we don’t need. Every purchase adds up which could result in spending more than you intended to. Whole foods are mostly located in the perimeter of the shops, so start doing your shopping here to fill up your trolley. The middle aisles often contain the more unhealthy items such as processed foods; only go down the aisles where you need something because browsing may lead to temptations. Most shops also place their expensive items at eye level, when scanning for the items you need, try looking at the top or bottom of the shelves.

05
BUY WHOLE FOODS
06
BUY MORE AFFORDABLE CUTS OF MEAT
07
Processed foods are often more expensive than whole foods, for example buying a block of cheese and grating it yourself will be cheaper than buying already shredded cheese. The same goes for vegetables – buy whole veggies and cut them up yourself. Pre-peeled and chopped vegetables cost a lot more per serving than making up your own vegetable mixes.
Meat can be enjoyed on a budget. Change the cuts of meat you select to get more affordable options. Instead of having chicken breasts, buy chicken thighs and try different cooking methods. A slow cooker is excellent at helping tough cuts taste a lot more juicy and tender. Inexpensive cuts of meat often make great casseroles, soups and stews.
Foods which keep for a long period of time can be bought in bulk. Grains like brown rice, barley and oats, as well as lentils, beans, some nuts and dried fruit kept in airtight containers can last a very long time. Research the sales and promotions running at your supermarket and if you plan your meals according to this, you may end up saving a lot of money. If your supermarket store offers a savings card, such as My SPAR Rewards, be sure to sign up.
Eating healthily influences the way we feel about ourselves and shapes the way we look. It is important to make good food choices everyday not only for ourselves but also for our families. Healthy eating does not have to cost a fortune and following these simple tips may help you to lead a better lifestyle. Bad health can often cost more as medical bills increase and work capacity may decrease. Always remember that no price can be put on good health.
BUY IN BULK AND LOOK FOR SALES
08
COOK AT HOME AND MAKE ENOUGH FOR LEFT-OVERS Eating out or buying fast foods are often high in fat, salt and calories which are not good for us and these foods are also not easy on the wallet. Instead opt for eating healthy meals at home. This way you know exactly what is in your food. Cooking larger quantities of food and using the leftovers helps save costs and time. Leftovers can be used for lunches, in other recipes or used to make great stews, stir-fries and salads.
WHERE DOES FUTURELIFE® FIT IN? FUTURELIFE® products can fit into a healthy diet and not break the bank. For example, if you were to buy a 500g box of FUTURELIFE® Smart food™ for R40, you are supposed to get 10 servings from this (50g a serving). This comes to just R4 per serving! Look out for the 1.25kg boxes, or shop in bulk to help your budget go further.

Tips
IF YOU ARE TRAINING HARD FOR YOUR FIRST SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE, TAKING YOUR FIRST CRACK AT THE 10KM OR LOOKING TO TOP YOUR PERFORMANCE FROM LAST YEAR’S RACE, YOU ARE GOING TO NEED SOME EXPERT ADVICE! THE EXPERTS AT ASICS HAVE COMPILED THE LATEST RUNNING AND TRAINING TIPS TO HELP YOU #FINDYOURWINGZ IN THE 2018 RACE!
MIX UP YOUR TRAINING REGIME Using a varied training regime can give you faster times, an improved running technique, gives you new challenges to overcome and strengthens different muscles in your body. Trying to improve as a runner often means getting out there and running more. But repeating the same training regimes can begin to get tiresome for experienced runners. And that can start to affect your performance. Putting together a new training plan lets you fit in different types of running. When all of these styles work together, you get improved fitness and greater strength. A varied training plan could include a combination of road running, speed running, trail running and natural running.
2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE 69
STYLE WHY IT HELPS:
• It reduces your risk of injury. • You can overstress your body by always repeating the same running route. Muscles can grow weary if you do the same distance, surface and duration. • It strengthens different muscle groups. • Running at different speeds and on varied surfaces pushes your body and improves your strength. It stimulates different muscles and gets you running faster. • Natural running helps you strengthen your feet muscles and tendons. Your feet are less constricted and you get a more direct ground feel. • Speed running helps you increase your stride length and/or stride frequency.
• Adding in long-distance trail runs improves your fitness and strengthens different muscle groups. You’ll see gains on whatever surface you normally run on. • Trail running helps you build up your muscles in a very specific way – but it also adds freedom to your running.
INCREASING YOUR RUNNING SPEED Whatever your goals are as a runner, at some point you’ll find yourself saying: ‘I want to get faster!’ If you want to increase your speed, the first thing to think about is
the distance. A sprinter needs an entirely different kind of training than a longdistance runner. And even improving your speed across 5 km or 10 km you’ll need to train differently than if you’re improving your full or half marathon time. To understand the difference, it helps to look at what happens in your body when you run long distances. On one level, running is about storing and burning energy. Comparing a marathon to a 5km race, your body needs a different energy strategy. A 5km race is about how fast your body can burn energy to sustain the high pace. In a marathon, on the other hand, what counts is how much energy you can store and conserve over the longer distance.
SO HOW DO YOU SPEED TRAIN? For shorter race distances like 5km and 10km, interval training is a great speed builder. This will condition your body to burn energy faster and build your cardiorespiratory fitness.
HERE ARE TWO VARIANTS YOU COULD TRY IN YOUR TRAINING:
• Intervals: alternating 1km fast-paced running with 2 to 5 minutes of slow jogging • Fast runs: providing speed training at one consistent speed above your comfort level For full and half marathon distances you need to focus on fast-paced endurance runs. This will increase your endurance at speed running and condition your body to be efficient in storing and burning energy.
HERE ARE SOME YOU COULD TRY:
• Build-up runs: starting at a moderate pace, increasing to a hard pace and again to a very hard pace • Fast runs: at one consistent speed above your comfort level. Depending on your plan, the distance can be increased over time. Whatever training plan you adopt, remember to rest at least once a week and make sure to stretch before you head out running – this will help you prevent injuries and make sure you’re fit to stay on top of your training. 70

SPEED SHOES For serious speed training, you may want to think about an extra pair of shoes, specifically designed for fast running. Keep in mind that professional runners have a whole range of shoes to wear for different training types and distances, and that your feet will thank you for the added variety in footwear.
BUYING THE RIGHT RUNNING SHOES Getting running shoes that are perfectly suited to your body type and running style sets you up for a lifetime of running, rather than just a few months. When buying the right shoes there are a few questions you should ask yourself.
01
HOW FAR DO YOU WANT TO RUN?
02
WHAT TERRAIN ARE YOU GOING TO RUN ON?
72
Are your eyes set on a marathon? If so, you should be looking for lots of cushioning and comfort. Otherwise those 20 kilometres will seem much longer. You also need to think about the high mileage when you’re in training. Good comfort makes sticking to your running plan easier and much more enjoyable. Cushioning and comfort are also key for runners who just want to do a couple of short runs every week.
You wouldn’t take a Ferrari off road. In the same way, you wouldn’t want to do trail running in a pair of road shoes. There are
2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE
shoes designed for beginners across all types of running – from trails to track. And you ought to think about the kind of weather you’ll be running in – shoes with good grip will keep your feet secure when it’s raining.
03
WHAT’S YOUR PRONATION LEVEL?
04
WHAT IS YOUR FOOT SHAPE?
Pronation is entirely normal, and it describes the amount your foot rolls inward as you run. But if you overpronate – where your foot rolls inwards too far – you’ll need a shoe that helps correct your running style and supports you all the way.
If your feet are slightly wider – don’t worry. You won’t have to squeeze into a narrow shoe.
Instead you can go for a wider one that is roomy inside and cuts down on blisters on the sides of your feet.
05 BUDGET?
WHAT’S YOUR Obviously you’d like the very best shoes out there, but sometimes your budget might get in the way. You should make sure you get all the features you need though – otherwise you run the risk of getting cheap, flimsy shoes that can be uncomfortable and make you want to stop running, and wear down quickly so you need a new pair soon after. So it’s worthwhile spending a little more on a good pair that are comfortable, long-lasting and always there for you during training runs and races.

We may not all be a big fan of the ‘natural’ makeup look, preferring to leave the house only when we’ve got our ‘full face’ on but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use the best in natural make-up products!” Gerda says that the recently landed GOSH make-up is becoming a popular choice because it is giving women the opportunity to buy vegan friendly and cruelty, perfume and paraben free products.

TOP TIPS ON MASTERING THE
Perfect Up-Do’s FROM A BRAIDED BUN TO A QUICK TWIST, THERE ARE SO MANY STUNNING WAYS TO WEAR YOUR HAIR UP. PRETORIA’S FAVOURITE HAIR STYLIST, FOLLICLE HAIR ATELIER, SHOWED US THEIR TAKE ON THE PERFECT UP-DOS, WITH STEP-BY-STEP TIPS ON ACHIEVING THEIR FAVOURITE THREE ‘UP’ LOOKS!
I
n need of a new style this weekend? Then look no further than a classic up-do! They are the perfect solution to all your hair dilemmas – if you are going to a party, wedding, chilling at home or just want to hide greasy hair; an up-do is the answer!
THE MESSY TOP KNOT Follicle says: “This look is everywhere – and it's easy to see why! A messy bun is the perfect way to look glamorous, without looking like you tried too hard. Mastering this simple style will make you the queen of effortless chic!”
TOP TIP: This look works best when your hair isn't ‘too clean'. Don't be afraid to try out this style on your hair's second or third day unwashed! Trust us – your hair will stay in place for much longer, and with this look you really don't need to look that polished! If your hair is clean, add salt spray to replicate this texture.
HOW TO: 1. Gather your hair loosely into a high ponytail. 2. Take a comb and gently back comb the ponytail to tease out extra volume. 3. Pull your hair halfway through your elastic hair tie to form a bun. 4. Make sure you don't pull all the hair though – leave it as a loop with some extra hair showing. This adds to the desired messy look, and the excess strands will come in useful when hiding the elastic. 5. Pull a few strands out of the bun to finish off the messy look and spritz with a medium hold hairspray to secure. 2018 • MY RACE MAGAZINE 79
STYLE
THE TWIST Follicle says: “This elegant style works on all hair lengths, and is so simple to replicate in just three steps! Perfect for all occasions, this look can be worn for everyday or glammed up with a glitzy hair clip!”
TOP TIP: Before styling, prep your hair with mousse or salt spray when it's damp to create movement. Then, blow-dry your hair upside down to maximise volume!
HOW TO: 1. Split the hair roughly into two sections, then take the left part and twist it from your ear into the middle of your head. Pin this in place with bobby pins. 2. Repeat with the right section, making sure to direct the twist slightly upwards and pin it on top of the first twist. 3. If the twists feel too tight, loosen them as much as you want and pull out a couple of strands to frame your face for a more relaxed look. Finally, spray with light hold hairspray and add your sparkler to finish!
THE BRAID WRAPPED BUN Follicle says: “This simple style can spice up a plain bun when you want to a go for a look that's a bit more WOW! No one will be able to believe you when you tell them you did it yourself. But trust me – it really is simple!”
TOP TIP: This style works best on super straight hair, so make sure you use lots of product to leave your locks silky and smooth. Use deep conditioner and hair oils such as argan before straightening, to protect your hair and leave it straight for longer.
HOW TO: 1. Pull your hair into a low ponytail and sweep it to the side, securing it with discreet elastic. 2. Pull out a strand of hair from the elastic, roughly 5cm wide and tightly plait it. 3. Wind the remaining ponytail into a bun and hold in place with bobby pins- use a hair donut if you want a neater look. 4. Wrap the braid around the bun and secure with a small bobby pin before spritzing with hair spray to ensure your hair stays perfect all night!
