MY

Message from W

hat a year it has been since we held our first ever Virtual Challenge. In 2020, we found ourselves in the grip of a global crisis that we could not have imagined possible. And at the time, the thought that we would still be fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic was just as unimaginable – and yet, here we are! As tough as it has been, we cannot deny that we have all had an unprecedented opportunity to find out what we are really made of. The incredible fortitude our country has shown over the last 18 months was the inspiration for the 2021 SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge and its theme, #LiveLimitless. This year’s challenge celebrates the ways in which we have challenged, and in some cases broken down, the limits that lived in our minds before the pandemic. #LiveLimitless is calling on all South Africans to put on their running shoes once again and come together virtually to be part of a nationwide event that’s breaking borders and redefining limits!

What seemed impossible to us before has now become daily life. Working from home and caring for our children at the same time? Impossible before, and now an average day. Making deals and holding meetings online? A strange and unknown concept that we now take in our stride! What further proof could you need to show that limitations are purely mental, and how living without limits is truly possible.

We have all felt alone in this at some point. Working from home unable to see colleagues every day, restrictions on seeing friends – and then for many people unable to travel to see family. This took its toll, but amazingly we all found ourselves adjusting and finding the strength to move forward despite the emotional toll this has taken. So, this year, SPAR has once again found a way to unite tens of thousands of people. We’ve gone limitless and opened the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge up to the whole country. We can’t all be together in one place, and yes – you’ll be running or walking on your own, but you don’t have to FEEL alone and that is what makes all the difference.

Bringing people together is such an intrinsic part of SPAR’s DNA. At the start we questioned whether the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown would stop us from doing this thing that comes so naturally to us. The answer was a resounding, NO! We have done everything in our power to redefine what is possible and in doing so we have managed to host not just one but two SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenges. This has allowed us to keep the SPAR spirit alive, to keep giving back to our communities, to keep celebrating extraordinary South Africans and to let nothing stop us from bringing our community together.

#LiveLimitless means that we get yet another opportunity to create our own new reality. Rather than seeing this pandemic as something that happened to us, we can choose to see it as a situation in which we redefined a new life for ourselves, on our own terms in every way we could, big or small. The SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge is a way to break yet another limit in a long list of limits we have broken down since March 2020.

Limits truly do live in our own minds. Even big physical limits can be overcome if we think long enough about a solution. This concept is mind-blowing to me – and truly inspiring. Over the last year I have come to realise that even distance is just a concept, and that togetherness exists in our minds and in our hearts. I’ll be running in the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge with the mental image of everyone I love running right alongside me. Being able to be together in our hearts is what #LiveLimitless means to me!

The SPAR Grand Prix is Back!

Along with the return of the second SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge, we are also excited to be bringing back the SPAR Grand Prix Series for 2021. We as SPAR have recognised the impact that Covid-19 restrictions have had on sporting events and on the professional runners who have supported our races year after year. With this in mind, we will once again be hosting the Grand Prix Series, in 6 invitational races, and will be awarding a combined total of just over R2 million in prize money to the winners.

he amazing team who organise the SPAR Women’s Challenge every year have certainly shown us how to tackle limits head-on and come out on top. Once again, faced with the continuing challenges that Covid-19 has brought us, they have risen above to pioneer a world-class Virtual Challenge. Limitless means “without end or boundary”. Everyone’s path through life is different, none of us will have the same mountain to climb, so don’t compare yourself to others, this is your unique and precious life! If you want a true value of how successfully you live limitlessly, base your measure on how well you navigate your story “without end or boundary” to the kindness, compassion, understanding, forgiveness and acceptance you show, not only to others, but to yourself. #LiveLimitless

For me this simply means do not limit yourself. The world is full of possibilities and the minute you decide that there is something, anything you cannot do, then you are imposing limits on yourself. You need to break free from the constraints of your mind because in this freedom is a world full of possibilities. A world where you can achieve anything, so dream big and live the life you were meant to live. #LiveLimitless

It’s more about placing your fears aside and breaking out from your own limitations and from what society has labelled you. It’s about defying the norms and realising the endless opportunities around you. It’s about letting go and letting God do the rest. It’s about rediscovery and igniting your inner passion or dreams. It’s about having a change of mindset in life. Be Positive! It’s about being innovative, and being the best version of yourself. #LiveLimitless

05: Will I get a medal?

Need to Know Challenge Info From what to do, what to consider and all you need to know, it’s all here

01: Why did you launch a virtual challenge?

For many years, the SPAR Women’s Challenge events brought women from all walks of life together to make a positive difference in our communities. While loads of fun were had on the roads, these events were so much more than just women’s races. Over the years, millions were donated to various charity organisations that work to uplift women and children across the country. The events also became a point of camaraderie and an occasion to look forward to every year! When the pandemic-related restrictions prevented physical events from taking place, we knew that the spirit of the SPAR Women’s Challenges needed to continue, but in a different form. As the name suggests, we love a good challenge and this is how the virtual challenge was born. Through the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge, we can continue to unite women and stand together to make a real difference. This year, for every entry, a pack of sanitary pads will be

donated to help keep a girl in school. What’s more, through sharing the stories of the many extraordinary women in our country, we aim to inspire all South Africans to conquer their limits and #LiveLimitless.

02: Is the 2021 SPAR Women’s Challenge Grand Prix Series cancelled?

Supporting the professional running community and the many amazing women in it is very close to SPAR’s heart. The SPAR Women’s Challenge Grand Prix will be taking place this year, but in a different format. For all the details on how this will work, please head over to the full article on page 20.

03: When will the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge 2021 take place?

The SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge 2021 will take place on Saturday 4 September 2021. By entering, you can walk any distance you like, in your own community anytime between 6h00 -18h00 on this day, subject to government lockdown regulations of course.

04: Can I enter the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge if I do not live in South Africa? Absolutely, we would love for you to participate virtually in the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge even if you reside outside of South Africa. Due to

Definitely. Everyone who participates in the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge deserves a medal. These will be included in your virtual challenge pack. Once you have completed your virtual challenge on the day, please wear it with pride, knowing that you have made a difference!

06: Will I be able to train and race the Virtual Challenge with my running club?

We would love to say yes, and under normal circumstances, yes! However, life in the pandemic is far from normal, so best is to check and comply with the current Covid-19 related hygiene, physical and social distancing regulations at all times and plan accordingly.

07: Will I be able to run, jog or walk in a group? The SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge is designed to bring women from all walks of life together and we do believe in “the more, the merrier!”. However the number of people that may walk or run together is determined by Covid-19 related government regulations. So, please check these before you get your group together to ensure that all is legal at all times.

08: Will there be route support and water points?

Because the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge is exactly that, a virtual challenge, the area in which you walk is totally up to you, so is every aspect of your Virtual Challenge preparation. Why not encourage friends or family in your area to support you with a water point outside their door? We’ll leave it to you to be creative. The other option of course, is to carry your water and snacks with you. 2021 • MY VIRTUAL CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

09: How will the virtual challenge be timed?

It’s your virtual challenge at your pace, so yes, you will be required to record your own time, if this is important to you. You can create a certificate of participation for yourself once you have completed the Challenge. Simply go to https://sparvirtualchallenge.co.za/ generate-certificate/ and complete the form to generate the certificate. It’s as easy as that!

10: How can I add my voice to the virtual challenge community on the day?

We would love for you to share your experience on virtual challenge day by posting photos and videos on social media with the hashtags #LiveLimitless and #SPARVirtualChallenge. You can share these before you start, on your way or even afterwards. Please be sure to tag the virtual challenge pages on social media so that we can experience your positive vibes, and assist where needed. If you are running with your phone and stopping for pictures along the way, please be careful as crime is a reality in South Africa. Always be sure to take photos in safe locations. We encourage you to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings for your own safety. There will be a live feed running on our social media pages from 10h00 – 14h00, where we will be sharing some of what is posted on social media and the SPAR Virtual Challenge excitement around the country. Do tune in!

11: Will a virtual challenge pack be included in the entry fee?

Certainly! Your entry fee includes both your virtual challenge pack, and for every entry, SPAR will donate a pack of sanitary pads to help keep a girl in school. The virtual challenge pack includes our beautiful T-shirt, a gorgeous matching buff and your treasured medal. Please be sure to check the website when you enter for details for collection / delivery options in your area. If you have any queries, here are people that can assist: 12

Entries close on 15 August 2021. We do recommend that you enter earlier rather than later as entries are limited to 75 000 participants.

14: Can I enter the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge at a SPAR store? Entries are only available online at www.sparvirtualchallenge.co.za. When you enter, please pay careful attention to where you will need to collect your virtual challenge pack, which could

be a SPAR store or other, or whether a delivery option is available in your location.

15: Will I get a race number?

Because this is not a traditional race, and it is a virtual challenge, official race numbers are not part of the package. However, if you would like one, you can generate your own number on the virtual challenge website at www. sparvirtualchallenge.co.za. Enter your name, print out the pdf and pin it to your outfit on the day. This way, people will see that you are running / walking South Africa’s most beautiful virtual challenge.

16: How will different lockdown rules impact the virtual challenge?

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that things can change anytime. We are of course beholden to the laws of the country. Please be sure to keep a lookout for any changes, that may affect your participation on virtual challenge day. While we have big ambitions, we need to keep within the law at all times.

MY CHALLENGE

Chantel Struwig C

hantel Struwig is 20 years old and currently studying Bcom Fashion at Stadio. She describes herself as probably the most competitive person you will ever meet and as someone who will work herself to the bone to achieve her goals and dreams in life. She believes in dreaming big. Chantel was born with a birthmark that takes up most of her face and neck and she absolutely adores it. Being blessed with a birthmark has allowed her from a young age to overcome a negative self-image. She tries to use her social media platforms to inspire others to do the same.

What limits/ challenges do you feel you have faced in life? I think the biggest limit I have had to face, and still face each day, is myself.

How did you overcome these limits/ challenges? I forced myself to spend quality time on my own. I would use this time to train my mind. Our thoughts are so powerful and if we don’t take the time to train our mind to use that to our advantage, we’ll doubt ourselves over and over again. So I trained my mind to always look for the positive in negative situations, instead of constantly criticising and putting myself down, to rather give positive feedback and tell myself daily how good I look. Another thing that helps me is reading motivational books. There’s a quote from one of the books that I live by: “The credit belongs to the women who at the best knows in the end the triumph

28

2021 • MY VIRTUAL CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

How did the support of others help you on your journey? My biggest support always comes from my sister and my mother. My sister always gives me the tough love that I need when I feel sorry for myself and my mom is always there to comfort me when I’m down in the dumps. They are my best friends and I don’t know where I’d be without them.

of high achievement, and who at the worst, IF she fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”

What advice do you have for others who are facing challenges in their lives?

What qualities do you feel helped you overcome these limits/ challenges?

Just take it day-by-day and know that everything works out in the end. You just have to believe. If you think your life’s a mess right now, this is simply because your fears are just a little stronger than your faith.

I think my determination to give myself the life that I know I deserve helped me to realise that I would not be able to achieve anything meaningful if I constantly limit myself to thinking I only deserve a mediocre life. Another quote that I think about at least twice a day is: “Limitation is nothing more than a mentality that too many good people practice daily until they believe it’s reality”. It breaks my heart to see so many potentially powerful human beings believing that they can’t be extraordinary, professionally and personally. You need to remember that your excuses are seducers, your fears are liars and your doubts are thieves.

How are you challenging yourself to live your best life every day, today? I try and push myself out of my comfort zone each and every day, no matter how small that may be. Whether it’s asking a question in class that I feel dumb for asking or doing something bold like standing in the middle of the weight section and showing them what we girls are made of. This allows me to be a stronger, more confident and a better person with each passing day.

MY CHALLENGE

Zizipho Soldati Z

izipho Soldati is a 26 year old award winning film maker, content creator, social media influencer and an aspiring model who lives with a disability called Phocomelia of the lower limbs, which is a rare condition that causes very short limbs. Zizipho is passionate that her disability does not define her in any way.

What limits/ challenges do you feel you have faced in life? I’ve faced a lot of challenges in life due to my physical condition, challenges such as not being able to perform duties requiring the complete use of my limbs. I’ve suffered through a lot of bullying throughout my childhood because of how I look. I was rejected by an agency representing entertainers because of my physical condition. It is really offensive to be told you have the looks and the character but your physical condition makes it hard to work with you. At times I don’t blame agencies for making the statement because we’re still facing a huge lack of representation within the entertainment industry.

How did you overcome these limits/ challenges? If it’s something that I know I can’t do physically I rely on technology, everyone does these days so I know I’m not the only one. It can be simple things like washing clothes or cooking which we have washing machines and readymade meals for. In terms of bullying, I had to do a lot of healing internally. I relied on therapy and self-help content… again it gets better with time and with what you choose to believe. You are the master of your thoughts, if you let negativity take over your mind you are going to get negative results and that’s not how I want to live my life, I simply zone out. A month after the 30

agency rejected me, I was signed by two modelling agencies, one in Rosebank and one in the UK. They saw my pictures, recognised my confidence and they definitely wanted me on board. Sometimes what we want is far less than what we are supposed to have, so all the rejections are preparing us for what we deserve.

What qualities do you feel helped you overcome these limits/ challenges? Perseverance, consistency, hard work, allowing time and being optimistic. I know it’s extremely hard to have all of that when things are really not working out, but you need to remember why you started, your responsibility here on earth and to focus on the end goal.

How did the support of others help you on your journey? I’ve had amazing opportunities to meet individuals who are selfless and who want to see me do well, this gave me that extra push to focus. I also have an amazing mother who supports all that I do and this has been the biggest motivation to go for anything I want to do.

What advice do you have for others who are facing challenges in their lives? Start now, start where you are, and start with the little that you have, you can do all things but

it all starts with you. Make sure you feed your mind because a positive mind attracts everything good. No one will do it for you, only you can make it happen. Don’t get stuck on regrets, as long as you’re still breathing it’s not over. So start again, challenges are there to strengthen us, look past them. Right now, there’s someone who could be in your position and making the most with what they have, so motivate that person.

How are you challenging yourself to live your best life every day, today? By doing the things that look beyond my abilities and cultivating good energies in my mind. By encouraging others to tap into their inner powers to make life work, by representing the disabled community within the media space and by fighting for inclusion. Lastly, by enjoying life because we are living on borrowed time. It could be over at any time, so each time I take a breath I enjoy it, even when it’s stressful, I give thanks to the Most High for the gift of life.

Shirnell Swartz S

hirnell Swartz is a Special Olympics South Africa Short Speed Skater from Coronation Ville, Gauteng. She got involved with Special Olympics South Africa when she was 13 years old at Casa De Sol School, where she became involved in short speed skating because of the adrenaline rush. She also enjoys singing, as it is a form of meditation and relaxation for her.

What limits/ challenges do you feel you have faced in life?

How did the support of others help you on your journey?

One of the challenges I faced in life was discrimination from some of my peers, who always teased me for going to a special school and not a main stream school. It was also having to accept that I had to go to a special school because I had an intellectual disability.

The support of others in my life has helped me improve in a lot of things. My family are my greatest support structure and Special Olympics South Africa has played a huge role in my life especially when it comes to development using the power of sports. I am grateful to Special Olympics South Africa, for helping me realise my abilities. Special Olympics South Africa inspires not only the athletes but people everywhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential. The Special Olympics has the power to make a real change all around the world. My love for Special Olympics will not end!

How did you overcome these limits/ challenges? The support from my family helped me a lot because both my mom and grandmother made sure that at home I never felt left out. Working hand-in-hand with the teachers at Casa Da Sol, they all helped me see past my intellectual disability and realise my potential.

What qualities do you feel helped you overcome these limits/ challenges? The power of sports also played a huge role in helping me overcome challenges, because through sports we are taught discipline, selfconfidence, commitment and to learn to visualise the goal – which is to be the very best one can be in life.

A Lesson for

Living I

thought I was living a limitless life. You know, free to be who I wanted to be. My parents, who emigrated from Panama to the US in the 1950’s, were brilliant at giving me a safe and secure environment to grow up in. There in my hometown of Berkeley, California, they encouraged me to be whoever and whatever I wanted to be. Like any good parent, Mom and Dad were poised to give me the best possible upbringing. My early life was filled with the kinds of opportunities you’d expect from a recently liberated America that was formerly bound by the hopelessness of segregation. I had friends and neighbours from every corner of the globe. They were not just a diverse people because of skin tone and hair texture, but because of a vast array of unique cultures that were very familiar to a diverse Latin American family like mine. My neighbours were, for the most part, friendly and generous, ready to raise a village – even if my friends and I were naughty and not part of their biological family. More importantly, my own home came fully equipped: good schooling, home-cooked meals, a warm bed and two amazing siblings to boot – a brother and a sister! I had the required care and attention from birth to express my limitless soul. I was that child who was not only loved 34

but encouraged to stretch beyond limitations, whether brought on by society or my own conjured up selfdoubt. I benefitted from examples of limitless living all around me, as well as undesirable models of closed mindsets that produced overt unhappiness. To me, sad people all seemed to lack the common ingredient of generosity. It convinced me from a young age that if I were a giving person, I would never have to become a grumpy old man. I was destined for greatness because I had it all. I was well equipped with the loving support of family, a tolerant society and a well-rounded education that went beyond mere prestigious academics. I had everything a child requires to live a fulfilled, happy and limitless life! However, something happened following my childhood that challenged me, and thankfully, later changed me. Although I was unaware at the time of the detrimental impact to my seemingly indivertible trajectory towards a boundary-free life, I was held captive by my own doing. As someone who was likely to epitomise a limitless life, why would I choose to restrict myself? After all, no one should ever have to feel trapped inside a life meant to be lived free, right? Of course not. Early in my adult life, I was going to learn a

Everyone has a #LiveLimitless story. Some of us are at the beginning of learning to overcome our limitations, while others face their challenges head-on every day. According to WarriorRic, we all have limitations no matter where we start in life, and it is vital to learn the lessons and persevere until we are all overcomers. By WarriorRic

valuable lesson about responsibility, accountability and selflessness in order to truly live without limitations. I have always been gregarious. I had lots of friends in school, and enjoyed very special and fun times that I cherish to this day. I was popular in high school and university. I relished being the centre of attention and I had a manner of attracting wonderful friends. I also had a knack for being a so-called ‘player,’ also referred to as a ‘shark’ in today’s vernacular in South Africa. I was the celebrated gigolo to some of my close male friends, but although kind, chivalrous and charming, to most women I was simply cunning. I had amazing girlfriends, some plutonic and some serious. On the surface, I was living a limitless life enjoying personal freedoms, even if it meant manipulating my relationships to suit my selfish desires for companionship and intimacy. It was what I had been exposed to in a free, but patriarchal society. I knew it was wrong, but popularity with the boys and acceptance by some girls encouraged my bad behaviour, destroying my first marriage which ended in divorce. I have always been proud to say that I have never hit a woman. However, I had to learn the meaning of ‘passive aggressive’ while trying to work on my

failed marriage because of infidelity. It was only much later, as a proponent to end gender-based violence (GBV), that I learnt abuse is not just physical. I had to learn that GBV starts with emotional, psychological and even economic abuse against women. I had to also unlearn patriarchy, not an easy task, since I benefitted from it. Moreover, to denounce patriarchy could mean losing popularity with some of my male counterparts. Oh well, I guess those celebrating patriarchy are destined to become grumpy old men anyway. As a child, I knew to avoid becoming that grumpy old man I would have to be generous. However, generosity alone is not enough to live a limitless life. I had to learn to take responsibility for every one of my actions, especially if those actions impacted negatively on another human being. Also, as someone who was raised in a loving home and caring environment, I had a responsibility to take on issues in society where love and care were missing. I always believed in the notion that I could leave this world better than when I entered it. No small task though, especially for a son of immigrant parents who raised the bar on child-rearing. The African term, Ubuntu means ‘I am because we are.’ It is a message of humanity. The message of freedom is not very different. ‘I am free because we are free.’ To live a limitless life requires freedom. A freedom enjoyed by me and society; a freedom that requires responsibility and accountability. A freedom we must share. I am reminded of the old biblical reference, “To whom much is given, much is required.” I guess that is where responsibility and accountability have helped me fill the gap, to not only give graciously, but to seek others in need in order to help them to live their lives beyond borders – real or imagined. Perhaps I’m living more limitlessly now because of learning from my failures 36

and my shameful behaviour towards girls whom I should have recognised as future women – wives, mothers and fellow partners in the upliftment of humanity. Maybe more attention to the pain and suffering that psychological and emotional abuse has on women instead of self-aggrandisement and a pitiful standard, boasting ‘I have never hit a woman’, would have had me raise the Ubuntu bar earlier. To live a limitless life requires a willingness to learn, unlearn and reconcile ourselves to one another. We must live without regret, but learn to apply the lessons. Always give generously and receive graciously. Only then will we help break the chains keeping us from living free and limitless.

Elana Afrika - Bredenkamp

Nolo Skiti My greatest limit was laziness to exercise, which resulted in me gaining weight. I weighed +-95kg. I had no choice but to start a healthy lifestyle. A friend of mine influenced my decision for the better and I started by running short distances around the block. I couldn’t finish a km without walking. Now, I am a 6 times Comrades marathon finisher. I also decided to change my eating habits and eat healthier. Now I watch what I eat and have lost +-27kg. My family saw the changes and decided to join me in a healthier lifestyle.

I was 15 when my aunt piped up, “You will never achieve anything with these marks.” I was holding my report card proudly, and the disappointment that followed her words was crushing. That wasn’t the last bullying comment that followed my life and career. Being a positive person is not easy, it comes with opinions, people that want to drag you down, and criticism about why you are always so happy. There is a lot of jealousy from others, which can be limiting and paralysing. My gift to myself is to remind myself daily that there are no limits to kindness, to what I can do as a broadcaster and what we can do as a family with Our creator. I know the truth, I know myself, and I know my life is limitless. Guilt in parenting is limiting, the wrong friends are limiting, and being fearful of the unknown is limiting. The solution: My “AHA” moment comes every day when I remind myself of what is true and what isn’t. Being limitless for me is a relief, it gives me courage and it gives me a reason to help others. I am limitless. I am a mom, and a wife and a broadcaster. I can run. Fast. Virtually or right here. I was created limitlessly!

Bonang Gwampi I’ve had to work through trying to be a perfectionist for the better part of my life as I did not want to be associated with any form of failure whatsoever. Nomvuzo Zongo I did not do mathematics at high school and had very little exposure at university. So when I arrived at UCT to do my first degree, I just couldn’t count, which was a big limitation for me. I ended up having to take extra lessons and tutorials on mathematics, and with the help of a mentor, I passed and was awarded my commerce degree. When it came to my Master’s degree, it was an even greater challenge as I was far more exposed. But with a great deal of assistance from others and hard work and dedication, I am proud to say I have 2 degrees in commerce.

Robbie Kruse A big limitation for me in my younger years was wearing glasses. I received Lasic eye surgery at 27 years old, but before then it was very difficult to play sports and participate in water polo with glasses and contact lenses. It was really tough, but I didn’t let it get me down. And now I can see the moon, in detail!

Sarina Bosman I have wanted to be a radio presenter since I was 11 years old, when I played radio-radio on my own as a child. I have always known that this is what I want to do with my life. At 11 you don’t really know if you have the skills or talent to do what you want to do, so it was always in the back of my mind and I started to work towards it. I started doing Orators at school and participating in every single public speaking event that I could think of, so that I could build up the necessary skill set to achieve this massive dream. The biggest lesson that I had to learn in life is that it doesn’t necessarily come easily. I picked my university based on the campus radio station and when I arrived at university and applied at the campus radio station, I didn’t get in. And I had to wait six or seven month before I could reapply. During that time I worked at other radio stations to build up my experience and when I reapplied I got in. Ever since then I have been living out my dream and fulfilling my passions every single day. 44

It has created opportunities for me to study, to work and to build invaluable relationships. The friends that I have made on, and next to, the court have become family. Netball has enabled me to overcome my greatest challenges, may it be financial or emotional. It has empowered me with tools and skills to live a life of independency. Siphokazi Menziwa I have overcome my fear – Fear of the unknown, fear of the outcome, fear of not being good enough, fear of failing. Such that I only did things that I was comfortable with as I was fearful of taking risks. I wanted to be comfortable. Through the support of my Mom who kept telling me that I am good enough, I am beautiful, I can do it, I was able to face my fear. I started giving myself positive affirmations consistently to boost my confidence. I learnt to accept the outcome whether positive or negative and I learnt to understand that not everything will go my way. I surrounded myself with people who see the positive in life and I encourage myself every day to push forward to face my fears. I tell myself that I need to step out of my comfort zone and face my fears and in so doing I live limitlessly. When I started operating outside of my comfort zone I started growing towards my full potential. Now I take action with determination to become the person I believe I am meant to be. Now I believe fear is a mind game and with the power of the mind I can do anything when I put my mind to it. I’m no longer afraid of taking risks, I live limitlessly. I learnt to realise that the things we stress about are not as hard as we imagine them to be. I’m not scared to challenge my own limits, I keep going, I crush my limits, I explore life’s possibilities because I’m out of my comfort zone.

Rene Kalmer The limit I have overcome in life, was not allowing anyone to steal my joy or make me believe that I’m not good enough. I started running at the age of 9, because the cross-country teacher recruited the whole school to run a cross country league race in order to accumulate points for the school. I wasn’t a natural talent, I finished 42nd, but loved every minute of it and the following week I was back for more. The following year I started to train and I slowly improved, year after year. At a young age I realised that hard work beats talent! I ran my first SPAR Women’s Challenge race in Grade 8 and the biggest attraction was the t-shirt, goody bag and being in the same race as my childhood hero, Elana Meyer. Never in my wildest dreams could I ever imagine that one day I would also win a SPAR 10km, never mind 28 SPAR 10km titles in total. At the age of 11, after Elana Meyer won the silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in the 10 000m, I started dreaming of going to the Olympic Games. 16 years later that dream became a reality when I qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for the 1500m. It took me a decade to improve by 3 seconds to meet the qualifying standard. In that decade I battled with injuries, doubt and fear of failure, but somehow, I kept the dream alive and at the end all the BLOOD, SWEAT and TEARS were worth it. My #LiveLimitless feeling was the day I finished a 729km walk. I knew then that no matter what, I can conquer so much more in life and that my past does not define me. I could feel my limits floating away.

Having to leave home and play netball overseas for clubs was a big limit for me. The idea of travelling outside the country alone was a nightmare. This was my first opportunity to play overseas and after a long conversation with my coach (Sthembiso Mncwabe), I got the idea that it was bigger than I thought. Which was true! I had traveled with the SPAR Proteas before but never alone. I just knew I was going to ask at the airport every time I wasn’t sure and I made sure I connected to the airport wifi as soon as I landed to update the manager and coach that side. They were very helpful. Looking back, I can ask, ‘Why was I stressing?’ It all seems ok now. But in that moment, I could picture a lot of things going wrong and not having anyone to help me. The uncertainty and the unknown terrified me. In the end, I guess I just needed to trust that all would go well and it eventually did! Grateful!

Gino Fabbri The toaster was used in one of my first solo shows. A solo comedy show is a terrifying thing to do and so it represented that moment when I had to dig deep and jump! It reminds me of that show. It was my Nonna’s (my Italian Grandmother) toaster in the 50s and it has sentimental value... My father was Italian and my mother was a Van Staden! I lean on the Italian in me to give me the passion and flair, and my South African half keeps me resilient.

Khutso Theledi From a very young age I was raised to never let the limitations or insecurities of others limit what is possible for me, that I can make it, that in fact I’m sure I will, and if I fall, stand tall and come back for more. By overcoming the teasing of my deep voice back in primary school, to becoming YFM’s first female afternoon drive time host to do it on her own, I learnt to understand my limitations everyday and overcome them. Never forget to move beyond your perceived limitations. 48

Ivan Botha Growing up I dreamt of making a career out of sport, I was never involved with theatre or drama. And then life happened… In Grade 10 I was diagnosed with scoliosis (my spine was growing skew), which meant I had to immediately stop all contact sport. This was devastating to my dreams of being a sportsman. What was incredible was that I was never meant to follow that path, but if something like this had never crossed my path and challenged me I would never have challenged myself to spread my wings and explore different avenues, to get to know different people and try different things. So I got involved in drama. I can clearly remember the first time on stage in front of an audience, it was an out-of-body experience! And I can recall God saying that I could experience that feeling for the rest of your life. I had found my calling in playing characters and storytelling. So at a young age I realised how life often gives us challenges, sometimes big and sometimes small, but I truly believe that God never gives us challenges that we cannot overcome.

When I was at school I was the tallest, skinniest, darkest girl in my class every year and I was teased and bullied daily. When I went home in tears every day, my mom would say to me that the things I see as a weakness now will be my greatest strengths in life. This became my truth as I focused on the sports I loved and excelled in them, and soon others began to recognise my “weaknesses” as true strengths and blessings.

Kesa Molotsane My biggest limit was having the whole class turn their backs on me in Grade 7. I believe that it was bullying on a different level. I overcame that by understanding that not everyone will be as considerate as you are. I was open to learning and treating experiences as learning curves and not as failures.

Ouma Tema One of my biggest limitations that I have had to overcome is to look in the mirror and love what I see. Having to look at yourself in the mirror, face yourself and believe that you are amazing, even in a world that doesn’t want you to feel beautiful and that makes money out of your insecurities. I had to overcome my fears and negative thoughts that I am not beautiful or worthy or enough. Looking at yourself in the mirror gives you the opportunity to look in-depth and filter out the negative thoughts and encourage the positive thoughts. One of the greatest challenges is to look inside yourself and always be honest with yourself, the mirror provides that. For the longest time, I disliked my mirror because the magazines said I’m not beautiful, tv said that I am the before picture and there needs to be an after picture that you need to be like. Looking back on not appreciating what I saw in the mirror and what I appreciate now, makes me realise that I have overcome the limitations and narrative that sought to minimise my potential. Today I can look in a mirror and love what I see, and this gave me the confidence to start my own business and be okay with who I am, because what I see is amazing! 2021 • MY VIRTUAL CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

Tauné Block I’ve overcome the limits of stagnancy and complacency by setting goals that push me out of my comfort zone and require consistent work and dedication. I’ve seen myself move from a city where I had established myself and had an incredible support system of family and friends. The move ultimately morphed from a great life to one where I didn’t have half that comfort. I did this to become the woman my younger self always dreamed of being. In doing so, I’ve been growing, overcoming character-defining challenges in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise, but moreover, I’ve become stronger, a bigger risk-taker, fearless and ultimately a reminder to myself that anything is possible.

Jo-Dee Butler Growing up we didn’t always have everything we wanted but we definitely had everything we needed. I’m fortunate to have a mom who instilled a “can-do attitude” in me so I believe that no dream is too big or out of reach - no matter what the circumstances. Today, I host my own show, ‘The B-Side’ every Saturday afternoon, and I’m not afraid to take on the world. I have the confidence and willpower to tackle anything life throws at me!

Donnalee Roberts One of my first experiences in my life of overcoming limits was being severely teased and bullied as a young girl for looking different and not having the material things that everyone around me had. I had to experience the limits that other people placed on me and it made me doubt everything about who I am and what my dreams were. I have dreamed about being a storyteller, actress and filmmaker for as long as I can remember but because of the limits and perceptions others placed on me and how they saw me, it made me doubt myself and whether I would ever fulfill my dreams. It was only once I entered high school and made some amazing friends that, along with my mother and grandmother’s encouragement, I began to believe in myself and my dreams again. I made a choice in my life that I wanted to become a woman one day that saw people. I want to be the human being that sees people, their pain and suffering and insecurities but also their kindness and beauty. I want to be the person who calls out the gold in people and sees the amazing in them, so that they can hopefully see it in themselves and overcome what they are facing. The mind shift helped me to really begin to see the amazing uniqueness in me and led me along a path of believing in myself more every day. 50

Believing in second chances, having hope in second chances and accepting help when you are at your lowest. At the age of 22 years, I developed chronic pain in my right groin and had to walk with a cane. I had lived a very physically active life up to that point. After my first hip replacement at the age of 34, I had my life back. Fast forward 10 years and the same pain started in my left groin. This time however, I knew what it was and saw the right doctors immediately and they were able to help. I haven’t looked back! I now have a full life that I can enjoy with my family. I don’t limp anymore and there is no need to manage the pain anymore. So no matter what, if you need help ask for it and then grab every chance you are offered.

As a young women coming from the rural area, moving to Durban I struggled to express myself verbally because of the language barrier. I could not understand nor speak English very well at school or on the sporting grounds. My self-esteem and confidence was extremely low which then stopped me from being GREAT. I always saw myself as inferior compared to other individuals. I used the dictionary as my tool during my early school days to improve my English language. I was then able to share and teach other learners more about my own isiZulu language. Sports played a huge role as well as it allowed me to grow and not be limited from becoming a better person. Now I make sure that my precious journey is full of my own energy not other people’s, so that it can last longer. Living life according to my own values defines my #LiveLimitless.

Lindie Strydom My career started when my childhood dream to one day play in Egoli came true the year after I finished school. I was part of the production for 12 years and loved every moment, but it is important to never stop dreaming and to always stretch yourself a little farther. So to prove to myself that you are never too old for new challenges, I ran my first half-marathon at age 40 and represented North Gauteng in cross country in 2018 and 2019. Dreams don’t have age restrictions or limits! 2021 • MY VIRTUAL CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

training tips from Kesa & CharnÉ

1. Running Gear

Get all the necessary gear for your training – get the perfect training shoes for your feet, comfortable training clothes and the right mentality. Any distance can become an obstacle if you don’t wear the proper running clothes and shoes. It’s important to train in your new running clothes and shoes before the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge happens. Make sure that the shoes and the clothes are comfortable and the right size for you. Tip on running shoes – it must not be a snug fit– there must be a small space in front of your big toe. I always go ½ to 1 size bigger.

2. Training Plan/ coach

The first thing that you need to do is write your goal/s down; make sure that you have something to motivate you. Get a training plan that will help you to reach your goal on challenge day. It is always better that someone/ a coach helps you with a proper training plan so that you can reach your goal. Having a training plan also eliminates the stress of wondering what you need to do to run your best race on challenge day.

3. Progression every week

When you start to train for the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge, remember to increase your mileage by only 10% 54

per week. This will help you to not get injured. Always start with less training rather than doing too much. If this is your first challenge, we suggest you start with a walk for 5min and then run for 1min for 15-20min. Progression must be slow. You can do a nice build up until 10 days before the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge and then you can start doing less so that you can feel fresh and ready to go on challenge day. It is important to listen to your body. Take each day as it comes; remember that your goals are personal and you will need to keep a positive attitude to attain them – Never compare yourself with anyone.

MY PACE

4. Safety

Try and get one or 2 of your friends to join you doing the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge. At least then you can meet up and train together. It is also much safer running with someone than running alone and it makes it easier to wake up in the morning. When you know someone is going to join you for a training session, it makes the run so much easier and more enjoyable. You need to make sure that you stay hydrated; and that you exercise in a safe space away from possible danger, like traffic. Remember to adhere to Covid-19 regulations. Wear your mask (unless you are either walking, jogging, running or involved in a physical training regime), wash your hands or sanitize and dress warmly when the weather is cold.

Strength Exercises from Charné Crunches

Reverse Crunches

Lift your shoulders from the ground. Do at least 15-20 reps.

Bring legs up to the chest and lower slowly without letting the feet touch the ground. Do at least 15-20 reps.

Squats You can use a weight or just a 2 litre bottle of water if you don’t have weights. Do at least 10-12 reps.

5. Strength traininG

It is important to incorporate some strength training into your running regime. You only need 2 sessions per week. 2 legs, 2 arms and 2 stomach exercises for only 30min per session are enough. The strength will help you to get stronger and your SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge will feel so much easier. It is advisable to stop doing strength training 10 days before challenge day. 56

TRIAL and error Remember it is very important not to try anything new on challenge day. You need to run at least 3-4 times in your new shoes before doing the challenge. Whatever you are going to take on challenge day – start using it in your training, so that you know what works for you and what doesn’t. Your mental health is also very important; allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them in the process.

When you are training for this big event, remember to take at least 1 or 2 rest days in the week, where you don’t do any training. This is your reward day for training so hard. Go for a nice massage or lunch with friends. This will benefit you mentally and physically. Importantly, remember that 2 days before challenge day you need to take a total rest day and go to sleep early that night. It is very important to rest enough 48 hours before challenge day so that you have a great run!

he Gel Nimbus 23 is a lightweight, every day neutral road running shoe with a heel drop of 13mm. The minute I got my Gel Nimbus 23, I put it on and I have not been able to take it off. It’s like I can’t find my other shoes. The fit was perfect as if it was made specifically for me. My experience has been with Gel Nimbus 21 and when compared to the Gel Nimbus 23, the difference is night and day. It’s a fantastic update for Gel Nimbus lovers, even though I never thought I’d fall in love with any version of the Gel Nimbus. The maximum cushioning makes it bouncier and more comfortable. The upper mesh is softer and more breathable. It gives the foot space to move flexibly which allows for long distance running. The midfoot panel provides a perfect fit for the foot for

complete comfort providing exceptional shock absorption and softness. The 3D Cloud Construction gives you genderspecific support where you need it most. The new softer GEL® technology gives your foot a soft landing with every step and delivers more compression in the heel. The Flytefoam is lighter giving you an ultralight and responsive ride and the cushioning makes it easy for you to hit your top speed. The Flytefoam Propel midsole material is made with high energy return elastomer added to the foam. This patented formulation is extremely resilient, comfortable and lightweight compared with other foams in the market. It also produces an enhanced bounce and push-off. The first time I ran in the shoe, it felt so natural, like I wasn’t wearing shoes at all. Walking in the shoe felt like walking on clouds. But running in the shoe feels like flying. For me, compared to my previous Nimbus, Gel Nimbus 23 is simply amazing. I ran short and long distances in the shoe and it’s remarkable. My first run in the shoe was 7 kilometres and it was the most comfortable run ever. My first long run was a 20 kilometre and far easier and more enjoyable than ever before – I felt like running longer. Coming from an injury, I didn’t even need a break. I have done over 130 kilometres in my Gel Nimbus 23 and I still can’t get enough. If I were to run the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge this year, ASICS Gel Nimbus 23 would be the shoe for it. I did not expect this kind of responsiveness from the shoe, but I am in awe. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced runner, the new ASICS Gel Nimbus 23 is for you. Give this new version a try.

Balanced Training FOR

Runners If you’re a runner looking to beef up your training regimen, the solution might feel obvious. Just log more kilometres, right? Actually, that’s wrong — or at least partially wrong. Like most other things in life, the answer to becoming a better athlete is taking a more holistic approach. Even if your one true love is pounding the pavement (or the grass, or the gravel or the treadmill — all surface levels are applicable here), diversifying your training routine is key to both reducing the risk of injury and also optimising your desired results. Variety is, after all, the spice of life.

eady to get started? Here’s what you need to incorporate into your training regimen, starting immediately.

Recovery Time

If you don’t voluntarily schedule in some rest time, you may be forced to do a whole lot more resting later on down the line when something goes wrong. Taking it easy gives your muscles, bones and tendons the chance to repair, rebuild and strengthen — and not giving them the time to do so makes it much more likely that you’ll experience an injury. No one wants to spend months recuperating from a stress fracture when the problem could’ve been avoided entirely with well-timed rest days — or even low-impact days. Exactly how much rest you need may depend on your body type and your training plan. If you’ve been training for a big race, for example, a post-race recovery period of one easy day for every kilometre you raced is recommended. You can also watch for signs of fatigue within your own body — poor general

performance may be an indicator, and you can always use your Garmin smartwatch to see if your heart rate and breathing rate aren’t at normal levels. A lower-than-normal Body Battery™ score — a feature specific to Garmin fitness watches — may also indicate that you should take a step back and allow your body to rest.

Cross-training

In addition to getting in appropriate amounts of aerobic activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity cardio or a mix of the two), the CDC also recommends healthy adults perform muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week. These should work all major muscle groups in your body — shoulders, arms, legs, hips, back, chest and abdomen. But for runners, it goes beyond just meeting the CDC’s guidelines for a healthy lifestyle. Cross-training strengthens your muscles and helps to speed your recovery — and will ultimately make you a better runner. It’s not about beating everyone in the weight room; it’s about giving those muscles some TLC. In fact, you can skip the weight room altogether and squeeze in a strength training workout anywhere, as long as you’ve got one of our Garmin sport watches. Whether you’ve got a set of dumbbells or just plan to complete body weight exercises, be sure to work different muscle groups, to focus on the form rather than the weight and, above all, to breathe.

Balance and Flexibility Exercises

On days where you don’t want to completely rest but you need something gentler than strength-training, try building balance and flexibility exercises into your workout plan. Think yoga, Pilates, tai chi — anything that offers the opportunity to stretch and loosen up your body while practicing mindfulness. Muscles that are well-stretched will have an easier time moving and are ultimately less likely to become injured. In addition to improving your physical stamina, these exercises can benefit you mentally as well — making it less likely that you’ll experience burnout and fatigue as you prep for your next big race.

grew up on a farm just outside Bela-Bela, in Limpopo province. With a farmer for a dad and an amazing landscaper for a mom, my environment encouraged an interest in, and understanding of, food sources. Once you are aware of all the time and nurturing that goes into getting the perfect vegetable onto your plate, you will appreciate and enjoy the food so much more; you can almost taste the love and care. Growing vegetables and experimenting with different flavours was a part of my upbringing. With both grandmothers and my mother boasting world-class vegetable gardens, and an aunt who was the moderator of home economics for the North West province, my development into a ‘conscious foodie’ was inevitable! Today I encourage people from all walks of life to rethink what they put into their bodies. Quality over quantity, always. Focus on the quality of your ingredients rather than how many ingredients you use when preparing a meal and always start with the right ingredients. If you do, whatever you make will be a healthy masterpiece. While I never formally trained as a chef, I grew up in a household where the majority of

family time was spent in the kitchen or outside around the braai, preparing and cooking amazing food … comfort food like goulash and potjie, festive food like roast chicken and leg of lamb, snack platters that still remind me of rugby on Saturdays and Christmas Eve with close family, and scrumptious baked goods that recall my aunt’s visits from faraway Rustenburg or my grandmothers’ baking days, when all the grandchildren were invited. In 1992, author Gary Chapman conceptualised the Five Love Languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch. I tend to think I have all five of them! You see, preparing and cooking a meal for a loved one is my love language, and it involves every single one of Gary’s Five Love Languages. Let me explain.

01

Words of affirmation

02

Acts of service

03 68

We all like to hear the following: ‘Can I make you something to eat?’ or ‘I made a fresh batch of your favourite biscuits this morning; can I make us a cup of coffee, then you can tell me about your day?’ Actions speak louder than words. Cooking a meal takes thought, time and effort. It’s something I love doing, so I approach it with a positive attitude and keep in mind the happiness of the person for whom I am cooking.

Receiving gifts

That incredible moment when I hear this being said ‘I cannot believe this is healthy’. I always cook with these moments in mind, and when I get that reaction, I know the recipe is a keeper.

2021 • MY VIRTUAL CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

04

Quality time

I love spending time in the kitchen, and then sharing a meal and taking a moment to appreciate the smile on someone’s face while they are eating. It’s just the best! I firmly believe that some of the most cherished moments in life happen around the dinner table or over a meal and that the value of these moments should never be underestimated.

Life is a glorious banquet, a limitless and delicious buffet

05

Physical touch

I always say that a scrumptious healthy meal and a hug go hand-in-hand. They both give you that feel-good, fuzzy feeling in your tummy, that feeling of belonging and of being loved. Whether cooking for a loved one or for someone less fortunate, I cook with love. There’s nothing better than spending quality time preparing a meal for those dear to me and close to my heart.

MY LIFESTYLE

Be the difference you want to see in the world, and share the love (in my case, food and cooking) – the world needs more. And remember: time and health are two of the most precious commodities, neither of which can be bought. Invest time in your health – it is the best investment you will ever make. I urge you to always strive to be the best version of yourself, not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. Respect yourself enough to want the best health and make the most of life. As author and motivational speaker, Jim Rohn said, ‘Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.’ Speaking of nutrition and boosting your body to break limits, when it comes

to explaining nutrition I always try and keep it as simple as possible by making use of this example. You cannot put dirty fuel in your car and expect it to perform at its best while getting you to your destination/end goal. You would most probably break down a couple of times, and the road trip that once sounded like the best holiday ever, can turn into a frustrating nightmare with some unfortunate people not making it to their final destination. Well, it is the same when it comes to nourishing our bodies. Are you boosting your body to gain good health? Or are you boosting it for a breakdown? When last did you read the labels on your favourite products, making sure that you are consuming good quality ingredients?

If you can’t pronounce it, perhaps you should take the time to educate yourself on the specific ingredient(s) before you eat or drink it. It is as simple as that. If you want to achieve your goals, I challenge you today to take control and overcome your limitations! That can only be achieved if we make the time and effort to invest in ourselves and take the necessary steps to become the best and healthiest versions of ourselves, and only then will we be able to perform to the best of our abilities. Now if you haven’t started the process yet you might ask, ‘But where and how does one begin?’ Like Maria from the Sound of Music would say… ”Let’s start at the very beginning, it’s a very good place to start.”

Some of my all-time favourite ingredients:

• I believe in the 70/20/10 principle – 70% Nutrition, 20% Training and 10% Good Quality Sleep. • You cannot out-train a bad diet, therefore focus on quality rather than quantity. • If you are a meat-eater, try and avoid meat-dense meals at night, rather have them for lunch, this will improve your sleep.

Oryx Desert Salt What is the purpose of adding salt during cooking? It’s to enhance flavour, right? So why not start by using a goodquality salt to do the job? Sun-dried and unrefined with no additives, this salt will bring out the best in your food in the healthiest way possible.

Raw Honey Salt needs sweet, and vice versa, to enhance taste and flavour. So when you add sweetness, choose a sweetness that has a healing effect on your body and health. Raw honey is anti-viral and anti-fungal and contains powerful antioxidants. It helps ward off allergies, stabilises blood pressure and balances blood sugar levels. It also boosts the immune system and promotes digestive health.

Let me share a few tips and tricks to get you on the right track.

Olive Oil We all have our reasons why we prefer certain oils, but without a doubt my oil base of choice is olive oil, specifically for its amazing health benefits. Olive oil helps reduce inflammation and prevent osteoporosis. It is also essential for bone health because it assists in the absorption of calcium and the mineralisation of bones, all of which are qualities I look for in a product, given my hip dysplasia and related joint pain.

Raw Cacao Raw cacao contains very high amounts of antioxidants, reduces appetite and helps with weight loss. It alleviates stress, helps manage depression and regulates blood pressure. It is a fantastic source of calcium too. Almonds Whether in the form of milk, flour, butter or flakes, almonds are packed with nutritional benefits. They boost the immune system, help repair damaged skin, help prevent cancer, reduce the risk of osteoporosis and have alkalising properties. They are also a source of vitamin E, magnesium and high-quality protein. 70

Baked raisin and date brownie biscuits 20 MINs

10-15 mins

SERVES 20 biscuits Ingredients

300 g pitted dates, chopped 300 g raisins 150 g almond flour, plus ½ cup extra for rolling 1 Tbsp. caramel essence ¼ cup raw cacao powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra for dusting Pinch of Oryx desert salt 50 g whole almonds, roasted 2 tsp raw honey

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 190 °C. Line a baking tray with foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray. 2. Soak the dates and raisins in enough hot water to cover for 10–15 minutes. Drain and mash in a mixing bowl. 3. Add the almond flour, caramel essence, cacao powder, cinnamon and salt and mix well to form a soft dough. 4. Using your hands, roll a heaped tablespoon of the dough into a ball, flatten it out and place a roasted almond in the middle. Roll it back into a ball and then roll it in the extra almond flour. To prevent the dough sticking to your hands, spray your hands with non-stick cooking spray. Once they start to get sticky, wash your hands and spray again. 5. Place the dough ball on the prepared baking tray, flatten slightly and place another roasted almond on top. Repeat with the remainder of the dough. 6. Drizzle the biscuits with the honey, dust with cinnamon and bake for 10–15 minutes. They are meant to be soft and chewy. 7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before storing in an airtight container in the fridge. 72

Choc chip blondies 10 MINs 15-20 mins SERVES 12–16 blondies Ingredients

2 x 410 g cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed 6 Tbsp. raw honey 100 g almond butter 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 tsp caramel essence 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 50 g almond flour 1 tsp Oryx desert salt 2 large eggs 100 g dairy-free dark chocolate, chopped (I prefer Gayleen’s Decadence)

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C on thermofan. Line a 20 x20cm baking pan with baking paper and spray with non-stick cooking spray. 2. Place the chickpeas in the bowl of a food processor and blend until smooth. Add all of the other ingredients except the eggs and chocolate and process on high for 3–5 minutes, scraping down the sides, until the mixture is smooth and well blended. (If you don’t have a food processor, you can pulp the chickpeas with a blender, add the rest of the ingredients and beat with an electric beater for 2 minutes on high speed.) 3. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl until light and fluffy, then add to the chickpea mixture and beat for another 30 seconds to mix well. Fold in the chocolate chunks. 4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking pan and bake for 15–20 minutes. The edges will be crispy and firm to the touch, while the centre will remain moist and soft. 5. Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares and serving. The centre will firm up a bit while cooling, but will remain perfectly moist and soft. 74

MY LIFESTYLE

Shorter days and cooler temperatures bring a distinctive sort of natural splendour. With its latest collection, HAUS is drawing inspiration from the diffused light and muted tones of early winter morning, swapping the winter blues for hushed whites, resonant greens, toasty browns and soothing neutrals.

T

his season uplift your setting (and your spirits) with light and space while layering with warming elements like textured rugs, plush furs and snug scatters. Play with either end of the style spectrum this winter for a light and airy yet warm and welcoming look. Keeping your colour palette simple is a chance to play with texture and scatter cushions and rugs add that layer of lived-in texture to your home. Incorporating natural elements brings life to a space and your greenery will be right at home in handmade terracotta Cairo planters. With their surface and colour variations, artisanal touches, like our Karoo stoneware in Ivory, offer a sense of casual luxury. Winter is a time to turn inward. Create an inner sanctuary in which to hunker down, calm the senses and settle the spirit. Start or end your day in neutral gear with a tranquil experience.
