On behalf of the staff and the Board of Directors, welcome to the 15th annual Freeze Frame International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages. It’s hard to believe that a whole year has gone by and we are once again celebrating the best in international children’s filmmaking. As Chair of the Freeze Frame Board, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operational challenges of the organization. This is why I love it when festival time comes around. I get to sit in the theatre surrounded by youth - of all ages - and really immerse myself in the reason we’re all here - the love of a good story. If you’ve never been to the Freeze Frame International Festival, you’re in for a treat. Take in as much as you can, but more importantly, share the experience. Whether you’re young or old, this year’s diverse selection of films speaks to any

age, language or nationality. Once again, Freeze Frame thanks our partners, sponsors, volunteers and especially you, the audience for your ongoing support. Bienvenue, welcome and bienvenidos! des enfants. Comme présidente du conseil d’administration de Freeze Frame, c’est facile de se faire prendre par le quotidien et les défis de l’organisation. C’est pourquoi j’adore la période du festival, car j’ai l’occasion de m’asseoir dans la salle de cinéma, entouré de jeunes - de tous âges - et de m’immerger dans la raison pour laquelle nous sommes tous là - pour l’amour d’une bonne histoire. Si vous n’êtes jamais venus au Festival International de Freeze Frame, cette année, se rincer l’oeil! Participez à tout ce que vous pouvez, mais le plus important est de partagez votre expérience ! Si vous êtes jeunes ou plus âgés et intéressés à de différentes langues et pays, les sujets du festival cette année vous toucheront. Il n’est pas facile de définir ce qui fait d’un film un bon film pour enfants. Bien sûr, il y a les critères techniques : la façon de raconter, la qualité de la photographie, le jeu des acteurs, ou la miseen-scène. Il faut que ces valeurs soient au rendez-vous. Mais si elles sont des conditions nécessaires, elles ne sont pas forcément suffisantes. À regarder la programmation de Freeze Frame cette année, un aspect ressort, qui est d’une grande importance pour les productions destinées à la jeunesse : la possibilité de changement. Que ce soit dans le film autochtone Boy (NouvelleZélande), dans les Histoires comme ça (France) adaptée de Rudyard Kipling, dans Le journal d’Aurélie Laflamme (Canada) ou dans Harun-Arun (Inde), changer

c’est s’adapter, évoluer au-delà des traumatismes personnels, vaincre le déterminisme social, dépasser les préjugés sociaux et politiques, surmonter les clivages religieux et ethniques. Donner aux jeunes le message que le changement est possible : pour un enfant, un adulte ou une société, c’est lui donner un message d’espoir. C’est lui dire que l’avenir lui appartient. It is never easy to determine the qualities that make a good children’s film. There are technical considerations: storytelling,

the quality of the cinematography, the acting or the production. Although all these ingredients are needed, they do not always complete the recipe for a great film. This year’s programming at Freeze Frame highlights one aspect left out of the list: the possibility for change. Whether it be by an aboriginal Boy (New Zealand), through the adapted Rudyard Kipling tales, Just so Stories (France), in the Journal of Aurélie Laflamme (Canada) or in Harun-Arun (India), change is adaptation and evolution. These films show that change can be the ability to overcome personal tragedies, to triumph over social determinism, to exceed political or social prejudice and to surmount religious or ethnic divisions. To teach kids, adults or a society that change is possible gives a message of hope, and proves that anything is possible.

internationally recognized for his beautiful imagery. He conducts workshops with children on film and media, and established the Children’s Audio-Visual Educational Foundation. Ganatra’s debut film Heda-Hoda (Blind Camel) has won many awards, as has his latest film, Harun-Arun.

Special Guests Canadian Guest Artists Chuck Clément is an independent television

producer, director and host who founded Media RendezVous Inc. in 2007. A graduate of the College universitaire de Saint-Boniface and Ryerson University, Clément has worked on numerous film and television productions, including Planet Echo, to be shown on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

Jocelyn Forgues Since completing his studies

at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, Forgues pursued an acting career in both French and English. Thanks to intensive training at the “Institut national de l’image et du son”, Forgues discovered the other side of the camera and he is currently collaborating on television and web series. Forgues’ short films, including Memories of a General Store, Embargo and Le Pari have been screened all over Canada and the rest if the world.

Daniel (Dano) Leblanc Animator, poet and

musician, LeBlanc is a true virtuoso. After studying at Concordia University, LeBlanc created the first Acadian super hero television series, Acadieman : Le First Superhero acadien. His cartoons are the highest selling in New Brunswick and have earned him many awards.

Anita Lebeau is an animator who has

contributed to hit shows such as Sesame Street and Richard Condie’s The Apprentice, as well as commercial items for Cordell Barker. Lebeau graduated from the University of Manitoba and worked for many years as a commercial artist and designer before fully immersing herself into animation, which has resulted in several short films such as Big Drive.

Danielle Sturk A multi-disciplinary artist and

director, Sturk began her career as a dance artist and choreographer. She studied film at the University of Winnipeg, and has created numerous films, including heaven(s) What is your heaven? .... Sturk also collaborates for projects produced by Radio-Canada, CBC, Les Productions Rivard and Eagle Vision.
