VIDEO PRODUCTION What type of video do your students want to make in a day? We have a great selection of workshop themes this year, ranging from music videos, silent films, documentaries, and news reporting! Students participate in every area of production, whether it’s acting or working behind the scenes. We begin with the creation of a storyboard, and go through each step of the moviemaking process!

BIG ANIMATION Super size your animation workshop! This unique workshop gives students the opportunity to make large scale objects come to life in stop motion animation. Using props made at Art City, this larger than life workshop is a twist on traditional animation.

NEWS IN A DAY Give students the opportunity to tell the day to day stories that shape their world. Students will create their own newscast with the help of an experienced filmmaker and a reporter from the CBC. Watch out Woodward and Bernstein!

ACTING FOR THE CAMERA Students will learn to harness their dramatic flair for this half day workshop that teaches acting for the camera. Students will work with Steve Sim, creator of Winnipeg’s own sensational improvisation group Crumbs! Get ready for your close-up!

MUSIC VIDEO Make music come alive with help from an experienced filmmaker and a local musician. Students will collaborate to create a song then film and edit their chart-topping music video! SILENT FILM Have your students ever tried to tell a story without words? If you answered yes, then they understand that sometimes actions speak louder than words. Students will have the opportunity to show us their best Charlie Chaplin impression and make a silent film from start to finish. NEW PERSPECTIVES What does the world look like from a different point of view? Stories told from a different perspective explore nuances and details that are otherwise left hidden. This workshop allows students to tell stories from a bird’s eye view, as an ant on the ground or any way they want.

PIXILATION Sign your students up to learn how to become the characters in their own animated sequence film. This active half day workshop requires enthusiasm and imagination. MEDIA THEORY This exciting half day workshop with provides students with a venue to discuss, analyze and critique media. Students will discuss relevent topics from blockbuster movies to social media. This engaging workshop is for the focused and inquisitive mind.

DOCUMENTARY Sign your students up for this exciting and insightful new workshop. Working with Randy Frykas, a professional Winnipeg documentarian, students will learn how to ask hard hitting questions and tell stories about the issues they care about at the Cre8ery in the Exchange district.

SCREENWRITING AND STORYBOARDING This workshop teaches students how to write and present a story. A valuable exercise for any creative expression, this half day workshop teaches students how to clearly, concisely and creatively tell stories for movies.

CLAYMATION Sign up to explore the world of plasticine. Students develop a story, draw a storyboard, create characters and then make their own short animated film. This workshop is a challenging exercise that requires creativity and teamwork.

EDITING WORKSHOP Students who like technology will love this workshop that teaches how to effectively master the basics of editing software. Sign up your students for this workshop if they have an avid interest in editing and computer technology.

ART CITY ANIMATION WORKSHOP How are cartoons made anyway? Students will join Art City’s guest artist, Amy Lockhart to create their very own flipbook and discover the magic and secrets of cartoon animation.

Youth Jury Contest: Movie buffs in your classroom? The Freeze Frame Youth Jury provides seven young people between the ages of nine and fourteen with the opportunity to see all the films at the Freeze Frame Film Festival and award the Youth Jury Prize for Best Feature Film and the National Film Board Youth Jury Prize for Best Animated Short. Members of the Youth Jury will take a workshop on film criticism, meet our guest artists and benefit from additional informal training provided by Freeze Frame staff. In order to be considered for the Youth Jury students must submit a 250 word critique of a film or television program in French or English by February 15, 2011. International Special Guests: Vinod Ganatra

Director of Heda-Hoda, a Freeze Frame 2004 favourite!

Director: Harun-Arun Country: India Vinod Ganatra has been active in film and television since 1983. He has served as jury member for national and international film festivals and is a board member for CIFEJ (International Centre of Films for Children and Young People).

His debut film Heda-Hoda (Blind Camel) was featured at 58 film festivals around the world and earned many awards, while his second Hide-N-Seek (Lukka Chuppi) was screened at 21 festivals. His latest film, Harun-Arun, deals with the Indo-Pakistan border and premiered at the 26th Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. It received the Special Jury Liv Ullmann Peace Prize, the Best Juvenile Audience Award and Best Juvenile Audience Award at Dhaka International Film Festival, as well as the Transmedia Critics Jury Award in March, 2010. Ganatra received a Light of Asia Award and he is the recipient of the ‘CIFEJ Prize’ by Professional Jury and ‘Special Mention’ by the Children’s Jury at the Rimouski Film Festival in Québec. Ganatra conducts workshops with children on film and media. His experience working with children spans more than two decades, and has culminated in the creation of the Children’s Audio-Visual Educational Foundation, a NGO.

Jean-Jacques Prunès

Animator: Just so Stories/Histoires comme ça Country: France

Jean-Jacques Prunès studied graphic art at Paris’ CET before continuing his education in cinematic animation at Gobelins, l’école de l’image. Since 1979, Prunès has been working for Hanna-Barbera studios in Los Angeles as an animator and storyboarder for various television shows. He has worked on storyboards and animations for numerous feature length films including Robinson et Cie, Rock’Orico, Astérix chez les Bretons and Le Monde est un grand chlem. Prunès’ film, Eugenio (1998) was awarded many international prizes including the Silver Pulcinella for best TV film (Positano, 1999). His other films, including Le Roi de la forêt des Brumes (2002) and Cheval soleil (2004) were awarded prestigious awards at festivals in Annecy, Auch and Madrid. His most recent television production, an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s Just so Stories has received rave reviews from audiences and critics and has been selected to be screened at numerous festivals. He has just completed a short film entitled Mendelssohn est sur le toi.

Canadian Special Guests: Jocelyn Forgues

Director: Memories of a General Store/ Mémoires d’un magasin général City: Moose Creek, ON Born in Ontario, Jocelyn Forgues attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles and pursuesd an acting career in both French and English, on stage and in front of the camera. Multi-talented, Forgues has penned plays and directed stage shows that have been seen across Canada and in the UnitedStates. Thanks to Telefilm Canada’s bursaries and after intensive training at the “Institut national de l’image et du son” (INIS, Montréal) in screenwriting and directing, Forgues discovered the other side of the camera and is now busy collaborating with multiple producers on different television and web series. Forgues has also independently produced a few short films that have been enjoyed across Canada and abroad.

Danielle Sturk

A multi-disciplinary artist, Danielle Sturk began her career as a dance artist and choreographer, performing in Winnipeg, Vancouver, New York and Montreal from 1986-1997 with Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, La fondation Jean-Pierre Perrault, Margie Gillis Danse, William Douglas Danse, Anna Wyman Dance Theatre and others. She was co-founder and artistic director of the Montreal dance company Graffiti Tango from 1990–1996. Graduating in film studies from the University of Winnipeg, Danielle is an independent film artist creating in documentary and experimental forms with the support of the Canada Council For The Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the ONF (NFB /Office national du film du Canada) and the Winnipeg Film Group. Her films include notably reeds / quenouilles (2008) and documentaries such as Vivre de A à Z : un regard sur l’alphabétisation (2004 — selected for two Blizzard awards), Who Has Seen Allan King? (2009) and Inhale Exhale (2009), selected by several Canadian film festivals. She also collaborates as artistic director or director for a number of multidisciplinary stage productions and special events, as well as television and radio programs produced by Radio-Canada, CBC, Les Productions Rivard and Eagle Vision.

Chuck Clément

Charles Clément is an independent television producer, director and host. He was born and raised in St. Boniface, Manitoba and is a graduate of the College universitaire de Saint-Boniface (Bachelor of Sciences) and Ryerson University (Bachelor of Applied Arts in Radio and Television). He began his career in 1996 as a summer intern in the newsroom of the Société RadioCanada in Winnipeg. That experience served as the launch pad for an exciting multi-media adventure, which has included stints working at international sporting events like the Olympic Games as well as various roles both in front and behind the camera on numerous film and television productions. He has also worked on senior management teams of broadcasting companies such as CanWest Global Communications Corp. and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. In 2007, Charles launched Media RendezVous Inc., a production company focused on creating informative, enlightening and entertaining productions for program buyers and viewers alike. The company produces content in English, French and Aboriginal languages and has worked in all genres including children’s, documentary, music & variety, drama and sports.
