Global Spiritual Leader Tours Our District With the title Superior General, Br. Robert Schieler, FSC, is the worldwide leader of The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, which spans eighty countries and serves one million youths annually. This fall, as we celebrated 300 years since Saint John Baptist de La Salle went to his heavenly reward, we could unofficially say that we were celebrating 302 years since he named his first successor, or the first Superior General. Br. Robert, who has been in this role, based in
Rome, for five years, is a graduate of our own West Catholic High School and La Salle University, both in Philadelphia. Once during each seven-year term, the Superior General makes a Pastoral Visit to each of the Brothers’ Districts around the world. For two weeks in November, Br. Robert traversed through seven states and a Canadian province, visiting nearly thirty schools, Brothers’ communities, or Lasallian leadership groups as part of his Pastoral Visit to the District of Eastern

North America (DENA). He met with Brothers, Lasallian partners, donors, and friends, Mission Executive and District Councils, Lasallian Volunteers, and most importantly, Lasallian students. In receptions and Community meals, informal gatherings and formal meetings, school tours and student assemblies, Br. Robert shared his vision for the future of the mission, and listened to how the mission is being lived out here in DENA. The Superior General sat in on La Salle University’s annual poverty simulation, a role-playing exercise that gives students at the School of Nursing and Health Sciences a greater understanding of financial instability, and prepares them to treat patients and clients who are living at or (continued on page 4)

A MESSAGE FROM THE VISITOR Happy winter, dear Lasallians… This past autumn, we were very much excited about the ten year anniversary of our District (DENA). Here in 2020, we have another ten year anniversary: the publication of Circular 461, entitled “Associated for Lasallian Mission: An Act of Hope.” In 2010, there was great enthusiasm for this ground-breaking Institute document. It continues to shed light on ongoing initiatives with Association. We Brothers profess five vows. According to our Rule (93.5), “the first vow of the Brothers is that of association for the educational service of the poor.” Association among the Brothers is primary. And how blessed our Institute is that all Lasallians have been invited, included, and welcomed into this purposeful Association.

We welcome new expressions of Association as well. Who are associated for this great mission? Young Lasallians, Legacy Lasallians, Board members, Brothers, ministry administrators, staff members, faculty, alums, donors, stakeholders. This much-needed mission for which we are associated together will continue to captivate the entire Institute. In fact, in writing to the District after his pastoral visit in November, Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, our Superior General, identified that the next General Chapter (2021) will focus on only two matters. You guessed it: one will be Association.

THE ST. JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE FUND seeks to ensure that a Lasallian education is available and accessible to those students most in need. Through an initial program of student sponsorship and a growing program of grants to identified schools, the Fund provides tuition assistance for students to attend a Lasallian school. With your support, we are now providing $845,000 annually for our students in need. All are welcome to join the Brothers and their Partners-in-Mission in this specially-dedicated scholarship fund which continues to grow each year.
FACE OF THE FUND: GARSHANAE SIMPSON 8th Grade, De La Salle Academy, New York NY I started my early school experience in Chicago living with my grandma, but in second ggrade joined my mom in New York, and attended a public school in my neighborhood in the Bronx. Community building was not a priority for the teachers and students there. I felt as though I had to construct a wall to protect myself socially and emotionally. I was first introduced to De La Salle Academy by my fifth grade teacher. Accepted to De La Salle in the sixth grade, I was a very defensive and introverted person. I did not want to socialize. I thought that considering my teachers and fellow students as a second family was w weird and phony. As I transitioned, however, I came to realize that De La Salle truly is my second family. It is okay to let my guard down, open up, and receive the care, respect, and support given by everyone here. The support of the St. John Baptist de La Salle Fund affords me the opportunity to be part of the De La Salle community that has helped me to blossom and feel more comfortable understanding who I am. Everyone here tries to encourage each other to be a servant-leader, ready to contribute their talents to change communities for the better. I began to see that I feel the best when I see others smiling and being happy. I have learned to embrace the values of De La Salle; to treat others with care, support, and respect, which encourages me and my community to p persevere, to thrive, and to empower all with love.

Br. James Miller, FSC Beatified On December 7, 2019, Br. James Miller, FSC, became the first Christian Brother from the United States to be beatified. “The beatification was an event that I did not think would happen in my lifetime,” said DENA Brother, Paul Joslin, FSC, who served with Br. James in Huehuetenango, Guatemala in the early ‘80s, and was present at the beatification ceremony. “It is of particular significance because he represents what happened to over 200,000 innocent, voiceless victims.” Br. Paul remembers Br. James, a Brother from the Midwest District, fondly, and has been a champion of his beatification—and hopefully sainthood. “At that time, advanced education for local indigenous people was almost unheard of,” remembers Br. Paul. “Casa Indígena program housed 150 scholarship recipients who integrated into the secondary school program at nearby Colegio De La Salle. By 1982, several had already gone on to complete university studies.” The militarybacked government, however, resented this program for youths who would normally be forced into military service. Beatification Ceremony in Huehuetenango Guatemala At that time, credible information was received that one of the Brothers was being targeted for assassination. Br. James and the two other U.S. Brothers were given the option of returning to the United States, but decided to stay to continue their work with the children. In a 1981 Christmas letter to his cousin, Br. James wrote, “The level of personal violence is reaching appalling proportions and the Catholic Church is being persecuted because of its option for the poor and oppressed ... I have been a De La Salle Christian Brother for nearly twenty years now, and my commitment to my vocation grows steadily in the context of my work in Central America. I pray to God for the grace and strength to serve Him faithfully by my presence among the poor and oppressed of Guatemala. I place my life in His providence; I place my trust in Him …” Two months later, Br. James would be shot several times by unidentified assassins while repairing an exterior wall of the Casa Indígena. Thirtyseven years later, an approved decree from Pope Francis recognized that Br. James died a martyr on February 13, 1982, in Huehuetenango. Brother was named Blessed on the same school grounds in which he served at Colegio De La Salle.

BROTHER SPOTLIGHT David Deradoorian, FSC
“So what’s your life really about,” asked a disengaged sophomore in Theology II earlier this year. I didn’t think quick enough on my feet to ask where the question came from. I answered in the moment to the best of my ability, but the question has struck me deeper each time I ponder it. My life as a Brother has been about learning to walk with young people on a long and winding, sometimes confusing, dusty, and lonely road of faith. I have only been able to accompany them because I have been accompanied by: a God who has created me, a family who has loved me, and Brothers, friends, colleagues and students who continue to shape and accompany me. I imagine that John Baptist de La Salle would be moved by the plight of contemporary poverty, but would also be quite moved by growing indifference, apathy, rejection, and anything contrary to the Kingdom of God that Jesus tirelessly preached. How can we learn and model loving each other as brothers and sisters? I often think that John Baptist de La Salle had the same task as his namesake, John the Baptist. Both men were called to prepare the way of the Lord. How might I need to more seriously make both their job descriptions my own? I am grateful for the opportunity to have served at La Salle College High School, St. Raymond High School for Boys, and currently West Catholic Preparatory High School. These are places where the Kingdom of God unfolds, where we dare our students and they dare us to live like Jesus the Christ. I know that’s what De La Salle’s life was really about. That is what I hope my life is really about.

below the poverty line. He then told the students, “This University is committed to the local and international community. You not only learn, but you learn to give back. You will find that happiness is in giving to others.” In discussions with students, Br. Robert heard firsthand how Lasallian education has an impact on the students themselves. “When living in my comfort zone, I am not fully living my faith,” said Mia, a junior at La Salle Academy in Providence RI. She made it clear that her Lasallian education asks more of her, “I need to step out of that zone in order for my faith to be nourished and to grow.” Mr. Robert M. Conway, Jr., Board member for The La Salle School, spoke at a reception in Albany. Mr. Conway reflected on the fact that he has held many titles in life, “However,” he continued, “the one I hold closest and dearest to my heart is that of being a Brothers’ Boy!” Mr. Conway credits his life’s successful journey to the care he received from the Brothers as a student and graduate of a Lasallian school. Lasallian formation was a common theme during Br. Robert’s many visits. Ideas were raised of how more Lasallians can take part in the various formation programs we offer, and how formation should be looked at as a crucial part of leadership succession planning. “Having the opportunity to attend the John Johnston Institute of Contemporary
Lasallian Studies,” reflected Mr. Patrick Mullaney, social studies teacher at Christian Brothers Academy Syracuse, “has given me the tools to become the Lasallian I wanted to be.” Please join us in asking God for his continued grace and guidance for our Superior General as he shepherds all of us Lasallians throughout the world.

On Friday, November 8, 2019, thousands of Lasallians gathered, virtually and in-person, in various geographic cluster areas throughout the District of Eastern North America (DENA), for the Lasallian Association Celebration. This was a day for celebrating accomplishments, and acknowledging that there is more to be done to serve young people, especially the most vulnerable, through this 340 year old Members of cluster hosted at St. John’s College High mission of education. The School, Washington DC, listen to our Superior General celebration also marked the 10th anniversary of the founding of our District through the merging of three smaller districts. While there was time for prayer, presentations, and socializing, the principal segment of the day was offered by our Superior General, Br. Robert Schieler, FSC. Thanks to the planning and effort of many Lasallians, Brother Robert, broadcasting from La Salle University, which hosted the Philadelphia area cluster, was able to present his live keynote address to every celebration site in the District. Each site was then given time to break into small groups to discuss the points he Break-out discussions, seen here at La Salle made. MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS - SYRACUSE by Mrs. Patricia Callahan, Director of Advancement
If you take a ride along the I-90 corridor through Central New York and stop in the city of Syracuse, you’ll find the only private school in the state to receive the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence designation for 2019—Christian Brothers Academy! CBA continues to grow its legacy as a top notch college preparatory school, boasting 100% graduation and college acceptance for decades. Two recent notes of pride are: • Eight of our alumni began medical school together at SUNY Upstate Medical University. • Nine senior athlete-scholars signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at Division I intercollegiate institutions. The strong Lasallian identity at CBA is fostered by the Mission and Ministry team, which includes representatives of all constituencies of the CBA family.
Current President, Br. Joseph Jozwiak, FSC, the longest running head of school in the history of Christian Brothers Academy, will be retiring June 30, 2020. During Br. Joe’s tenure, CBA has grown its Lasallian identity, invested in capital improvements, and continued its legacy as a top-notch college preparatory school. After a careful and well thought-out leadership transition process, it was announced in October that Mr. Matthew Keough has been appointed to become the school’s next President. Matt began his career at CBA in 2004 as a member of the math department. He was named Principal of the school in 2015. Since then, he has played a key role in the continued strong enrollment, educational excellence, and Lasallian spirit and community at the school. Matt completed his Bachelor’s degree at Hamilton College, and has a Masters in Educational Leadership from Le Moyne College. The school is nearing the conclusion of the most successful capital campaign in its history. Each year, the Brothers of the Christian Schools of the Lasallian Region of North America recognize Lasallian Educators for their outstanding work and dedication to the charism of Saint La Salle, with the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award. Mr. Charles “Skip” Gaus, Jr., AFSC Director (Retired July 2019), De La Salle Vocational - Bensalem PA A distinguished service career to adjudicated/delinquent youth in the Philadelphia area, Skip came to De La Salle Vocational in 1977, to begin a forty two year career in Lasallian ministry in the Saint Gabriel’s System. His leadership has changed the course of countless young men whose lives were on a highly dangerous trajectory, allowing them to lead productive and successful family lives and careers. Dr. Rhonda Hazell Assistant Professor of Biology, La Salle University - Philadelphia PA Dr. Hazell, in her eighteenth year as a Lasallian educator, is an outstanding role model for students and faculty. Demanding the best from her students while never compromising her standards, she also provides compassionate assistance and a guiding presence. Beyond the classroom, she stands in solidarity with those who are dispossessed, disadvantaged, and disinherited by society. Ms. Carol Soltys Dean of Academics, San Miguel School of Providence - Providence RI Carol Soltys is now in her ninth year as Dean of Academics at San Miguel. She accepts her students for who they are. Her vision finds students’ unspoken dreams and the potential for growth of the whole person. Everything she does is for the students and bringing them closer to God. She has been called a “guardian angel” to all of the young men she serves.

CHRISTMAS CARD ART CONTEST Congratulations to this year’s winner, 15 year old Roene Painchaud. She is a 10th grader at De La Salle College “Oaklands” in Toronto ON, mentored by art teacher Mr. Norman Lue Tam. “I’ve been going to De La Salle for three years—part of the De La Salle Cadet Corps—and my favorite hobbies are knitting and art,” stated Roene. “I noticed that many of the previous entries were very serious. I consider comics and cartoons to be my strong suit and wanted to showcase that, so I made a card that was more lighthearted, while still capturing the theme and the Christmas spirit. I really enjoyed the chance to compete against students from our other schools.”
We thank our ninety three middle and high school students from across the District who submitted entries this year for the theme, “So They Went in Haste”, and our art teachers who promoted the contest. Lasallian schools represented were: • • • • • • • • •

Born Richard Michael Fagan in New York NY on June 5, 1938, Br. Gabriel entered the Barrytown NY Novitiate on June 29, 1957. There he received the Religious Habit and name, Brother Gabriel Alben, on September 7, 1957, and pronounced Perpetual Vows in 1963. Br. Gabriel began his teaching career with a decade at De La Salle Collegiate in Michigan, followed by Christian Brothers Academy in Albany NY. After then spending nearly four decades in higher education, at Saint Mary’s College, Winona MN and at La Salle University, Philadelphia PA, he returned to Warren MI in 2013. The fact that Br. Gabriel had a huge and lasting impact on the lives of many may be witnessed by the numerous former students and colleagues who came to visit him during his final years at De La Salle Hall.

Br. John Joseph Perry, FSC, was born in Brooklyn NY on March 22, 1922. After graduating from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, he entered the Barrytown NY Novitiate in 1941, receiving the Religious Habit and name, Br. Birillus Bernard. He pronounced Perpetual Vows in 1947. Br. John taught and counseled at many ministries in the greater New York area, and on two occasions in Brussels Belgium. He also served as Provincial vocations director from 1960 to 1965, and served at Sangre de Cristo retreat center from 1965 to 1969. Through all of his ministry assignments and into retirement, Br. John cared deeply, and worked & prayed endlessly, for those served by our ministries in India and Africa. Br. Ed Phelan, FSC, stated, “His attitude has always been global, no matter where he taught or lived. Thank you John, for your example. You truly are a Brother for the world.”
Br. Timothy Andrew Murphy, FSC, was born in New York NY in 1941. He entered the Novitiate in Barrytown NY in 1959 and received the Religious Habit and name, Brother Dennis of Mary. He would go on to pronounce his Perpetual Vows in Riverdale NY in 1966. Br. Timothy dedicated himself to serving at-risk youth through his roles as counselor and administrator at Lincoln Hall in Lincolndale NY, La Salle Academy in New York NY, Tides Family Services in West Warwick RI, and Saint Raymond Family Outreach in the Bronx. Br. Brian Carty, FSC, spoke of the characteristic sternness, professionalism, and by-the-books approach to guidance that Br. Timothy used to create a stable environment for troubled children to flourish. As a leader, Br. Timothy molded young Brothers into selfless caretakers. “He never stopped caring for others,” Br. Brian said. “The stories that will be told of his generosity are innumerable.”
Brothers Mourn a Tireless Friend The Christian Brothers remember and pray for James J. McLoughlin, BFSC, who entered eternal life in December. Jim had a life-long relationship with the Brothers, beginning as a member of the West Catholic High School class of 1955. Jim was a proud member of the Plasterers Union, and for decades volunteered his talents to help the Brothers and our ministries. He spent countless hours helping at both Saint Gabriel’s System in the greater Philadelphia area, and at the old Ocean Rest retreat house in Ocean City NJ. He was named a Benefacted member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1984 for his dedication to our ministries.

Dear Friends, Is it just me, or as we get older, does time seem to pass more quickly? Didn’t I just write a quarterly message to you about a week ago? Silver wedding anniversary last year—that can’t be! Forty years since college—say it isn’t so! When I first think that this month marks five years that I have been here at the District with the Brothers, it seems impossible. But then I let my mind remember all of the Brothers I have had the privilege of getting to know, all of the colleagues at our schools that I have enjoyed working with, and all of our friends like you whom I have met—either in person, on the telephone, or through your written notes. Then I think, “How could it be only five years?” I do appreciate your messages. And when they are to a Brother, I enjoy passing them along. It always seems to bring a smile. Even for an elder Brother at De La Salle Hall with memory issues, I can tell his day has been brightened. I am sure they also feel as I do when they see the list inside this newsletter. Seven pages, thousands of names (in fairly small print), of friends who have cared for them and supported their life’s mission. And that list only covers the past three months. Ranked in Top 4% Nationally Results of a Georgetown University comprehensive study of 4,500 colleges, ranking them for return on investment (ROI), were recently released. Their findings indicate that the ROI of a La Salle University degree is among the strongest in the nation, with the University ranking in the top four percent in the nation in 10-year earnings by graduates. Dr. Colleen Hanycz, La Salle University President, adds, “Whether here in Philadelphia or across the country, La Salle presents one of the strongest value propositions in higher education.”
