EDITOR’S NOTE How crazy is it that we only have a handful of events left this season? I feel like it was just the other day that I was headed up to Union, SC to kickoff the season at the Little Brown Jug enduro. Before you know it we will be poolside at this years FTR Banquet celebrating yet another succesful season. I wanted to use this space to thank all the photographers that show up to our races, stand in the dust, rain, mud etc. to get such great shots of our membership. It makes my job a whole lot easier! I can’t stress enough how important it is to support these

people because without them you would have nothing to showoff on social media, hang on the fridge or any other uses that these pictures provide. So next time you see one of these photographers make sure you give them a big thank you, or support their smugmug websites with a photo download. Trust me a little goes a long way! See you all at the races! Kurt Lucas FTR Magazine Editor ftreditor@floridatrailriders. org

Reality Check 101 As I write this our season is almost complete and it’s been a year since we were cut short on our schedule. It’s hard to believe that the 2021/22 schedule has been put together for next year and summer time is just a month or so away.

events are run. All of this is a reflection of our dedicated volunteers and clubs that make it happen. I know I have touched on this before but I don’t think it can be said enough, it takes a lot of people to keep the wheels turning smoothly and efficiently. Every little act of unselfishness contributes to the overall result for our families, members and club personnel. Besides our regular crew that is a piece of the puzzle on race weekends, our members also can help make it a successful event by contributing to the big picture by doing little things.

don’t have to turn you away. Being aware of what we have going for us should never be taken for granted as it could be taken away if our clubs get tired of having to babysit you and your family because you act irresponsible. This may sound harsh but its reality. Not everyone gets a participation award, results have to be earned and there is no cry room available. We are all in this together and we all are here because we want to be because we enjoy the sport of offroad.

MY BIKE WEEK ADVENTURE by Kurt Lucas

For the first time in forever I decided to actually compete in some events for this year’s Daytona Bike Week. The events were the Wild Boar GNCC at Hog Waller, the Daytona Vintage Supercross and the Alligator Sprint Enduro. I’m not sure why this decision was made, but it sure did seem like a good idea at the time. The Friday before the Daytona Supercross I loaded up my Ford Transit with my KTM 350, KX 500 and street bike, and by street bike I mean a Yamaha Zuma moped and headed for Daytona. After a night of experience the sights and sounds of Main Street we headed into Daytona International Speedway to watch some Supercross

that Saturday. Immediately after Supercross I headed back to the camper to get some sleep before my first event of the week, the Wild Boar GNCC in Palatka where I would be racing the Junior 25+ A/B class. A few weeks prior to bike week I began to spend a lot of time at Croom Motorcycle Park, riding hours of sand whoops in preparation for the Wild Boar GNCC. Turns out nothing can prepare you for the torture of the afternoon race at a Florida GNCC. I have never seen sand whoops so big, and this was on the first lap! I immediately knew that I would be in for a long three hours. I actually decided to do the opposite of what I would normally do in a FTR Hare Scramble and conserve my energy on the first two laps.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

This proved to be a smart decision as the track began to fall apart at the halfway mark. The mud sections turned into soup, the sand whoops were so dug out that they reached the water table and formed puddles in between each other, and the breaking bumps were getting sharp.

On the last lap I was able to move into fifth place, which was my goal. Unfortunately about halfway through the last lap I realized my rear sprocket was losing teeth at a rapid rate. I tried to baby the bike back to the finish line but fell about 100 yards short. I was able to push the bike to the finish but lost two spots in the process. I crossed the line at 3 hours and 48 minutes. I was tired. Tuesday was an early morning as Vintage SX practice was at 7:30 AM. I was racing my 1998 KX 500 that I had only ridden three times, twice in Pre-Modern at both Bartow Hare Scrambles and once at 74MX to prep for this event. Practice went well as I tried my best to hold on to that beast of a bike. I had never practiced a moto start on my 500, so I wasn’t sure what to expect before my first gate drop. A fellow competitor told me that starting the big 500 in third gear was the ticket, so I decided to try that out. It didn’t work out great. First of all, having the 500 revved on the gate is equivalent to that game they have at the fair where you have to hold on to the grips that shock you for as long as possible, it is wild. Safe to say my start wasn’t great, and I think I ended up 14th out of 27 that moto.

up to 17th that moto and ended to the day in 14th overall. The best part of my day was watching my dad pull a holeshot on motocross legends Jeff Stanton and Doug Henry, that was awesome. On Wednesday we headed north to the DDR property in Ormond Beach for the 69th running of the Alligator Enduro. We met up and camped with some friends, which was a nice change of pace from being at the speedway all week. Thursday morning rolled around, and we were ready to roll for the enduro. It is crazy how much more relaxed I am before the start of an enduro vs. the start of a hare scramble. Being relaxed allows myself to ride better and that was the case for the

Alligator. I felt awesome on the bike all day and with the sprint enduro format there is no way to tell how you are stacking up against the competition. After nine fun tests I came away with the win in A Open, which felt awesome. I’ve been an A rider for a long time and this was only my second win in the A class, so you better believe I was pretty pumped after the race. Once all packed up I made my way home back to St. Pete, But first some friends and I decided to grab some food and celebratory beverages at Sparky’s in Astor. It was the perfect end cap to an amazing week. I have to give a huge shoutout to my dad, Paul Lucas, for hanging with me all week and being my pit crew. Couldn’t have done it without you pops!

Next moto I decided to start in second gear, but I guess I didn’t click it up enough and ended up starting in neutral and getting a dead last start. I worked my way APRIL 2021

ALLIGATOR ENDURO RACE REPORT by Ed Tobin

The Alligator is back! The Daytona Dirt Riders (DDR) recently welcomed over 340 racers to the Strickland Ranch in Central Florida for the 69 th running of the Alligator Enduro which was co-sponsored by Florida Trail Riders and Southeast Trail Riders. Congratulations to Zach Hayes who joins a long list of Alligator Enduro winners dating back to 1949, a list that includes some of the most famous names in American off-road racing including Randy Hawkins with 4 wins, John Penton with seven wins, and Mike Lafferty with an impressive fourteen Alligator wins. Long a March destination for woods racers tired of the winter cold and snow that plague the Midwest and New England this time of year, the Alligator Enduro returned in 2021 on its traditional date, the Thursday of Daytona Bike Week, as a sprint enduro. The club made a concerted effort to get the word out about the Alligator returning to Bike Week by contacting major motorcycling news outlets and racing

organizations across the East Coast and Midwest. The GNCC organization was very helpful and published the Alligator flyer on their website. The result was that riders from across the Eastern U.S. journeyed to Central Florida to challenge the sand. mud and palmettos that Florida enduros are known for. Lucas Martin and Jared Borgew drove down with four friends from Massachusetts. Lucas wrote: “We traveled from Swansea, MA to enjoy some of the Florida riding and decided to give the enduro a try while we’re here. Known about the Alligator Enduro for years, never made it to Florida to ride but glad we did make it. Great piece of property and awesome event. Thank you to all involved with putting it on.” Lucas finished 5th in Vet B and Jared took 2nd in Vet C. Attendance at the event was helped by being sandwiched between two rounds of the GNCC, the first in Palatka, FL which is only about 40 miles from the Alligator.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

While the majority of riders were from Florida, 23 other states and one territory were represented. Several riders commented that it was great to have a mid-week event to ride as they took the entire week off to vacation in Florida. None of the comments, of course, came from their wives who presumably would have preferred to vacation at a theme park in Orlandoor a beach in Daytona to a cow pasture in Favoretta. In preparation for the event, club members spent months manicuring the trails so as to provide the riders with a memorable experience. Under the watchful eye of trail boss Randy Griffin, the test sections came together to challenge all skill levels while having safety built in. Because the area had experienced a relatively dry January and February (uncommon for the Alligator Enduro), Randy knew the course would most likely be fast and dusty and took steps to limit speeds. As a result, the club had no serious injuries to respond to.

“My favorite test was the second test. I liked the tight trees and the rooty, muddy trails.” - Zack Hayes Zack Hayes took the overall win at the Alligator Enduro While DDR are known for their well-marked courses, they elevated it a notch by having FTR enduro riders Tony Livingston and Scott Gawler Sr. and Jr., all of whom chose to work for points, critique the markings by riding the course at speed and adjusting arrows to prevent blown turns. Hoping to make the event attractive to not only enduro riders but also motocross and hare scrambles riders, the club chose not to use many of the tighter, more technical (i.e. palmetto root) trails that are a staple of the Alligator Nation-

al Enduro that the club holds periodically. This year’s sprint enduro format consisted of a loop with three tests. Test 1 was envisioned as a fast, flowing section with a few trees thrown in to remind the riders that this was an enduro. Test 2 challenged the riders with tighter trees, some palmettos and a little sandy mud to remind them they were in Florida. The third test, a mostly grass track course with a few short woods sections to tie the fields together, ran through the pastures surrounding the start area

APRIL 2021

to provide 5 miles of twists and turns and an opportunity to ‘air it out’. Most A and B riders made three circuits around the loop for a total of nine tests and approximately 55 miles of trails while C Riders and beginners finished at the end of the second loop. For the lucky A and B riders who got to ride the third loop, Randy wove in several virgin trails on the first test of the loop to remind them of the national enduro heritage of the Alligator and to give these faster guys a little extra challenge.

PAGE 19

Overall Alligator Sprint Enduro winner Zack Hayes, who won the 2020 GNCC XC3 title, set the pace right from the start by winning the first test by 11 seconds over Garrett Edmisten, a past Alligator Enduro champion. Zack went on to win five more tests and placed second in the other three. Garrett won two tests, and placed third in four other tests. Rounding out the podium was AA rider Nick Kordana who placed second in three tests.

Holly dropping 163 more points than Amber. Holly commented “This was my first enduro I have ever done. In Test 5 I made a lot of mistakes and fell quite a few times, the track was rough by the time I got to the test because I was on row 74. I used to race hare scrambles and not training or racing for two years took a toll on my strength and endurance that I had forgotten about. I enjoyed

getting back out there and the club members were extremely helpful at the checkpoints in letting me know what to do next and where to go. Thank you guys for an awesome first enduro! ” DDR, FTR and SETRA want to thank all of the competitors that showed up to the 69th Alligator Enduro!

Amber Trapnell took home the win in the Women’s class

Zack, commented “I really like the course and the format. The first test was pretty open like a GNCC. My favorite test was the second test. I liked the tight trees and the rooty, muddy trails. The third test was also great. It flowed good and I liked the little bits of woods between the fields. You need to keep that design. Could have used a little more ribbon but I like how you didn’t cram so many turns into the fields like some other races. I also like your sprint enduro format. Didn’t have to sit around and wait a long time in between tests.” In the Women’s class there was a good battle between first place Amber Trapnell and second place Holly Langford. Amber, on 14D had a “lot of fun”. She won two of the six tests and took second in the other four while Holly bested Amber in four of the six tests. Test 5 proved to be the deciding factor with
