¬ trains 철도 There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Subway”, and “JR”. The subway links the two city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Airport. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel outside Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. 후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테츠 전철’ ‘지하철’ ‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타, 텐진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘ 니시테츠 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸, 가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나 신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.

Rates vary by distance, but are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p. 4 ~ 5 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Su-miyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofukumachi. Board using the middle doors and get off using the front door. Pay as you get off. 버스 뒷문으로 타고, 앞쪽의 문으로 내린다. 운임은 내릴 때 지불.
How to ride 버스 타는 방법 ● Check the destination on the front and side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via the center doors. ● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board. If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the sensor, ticket not required. ● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the monitor next to a driver. The fee appears under the ticket number. ● Fees are displayed on the monitor above the driver. Match your ticket number to get your fee. ● Push the stop button to alert the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. ● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box next to the driver and get off from the front door. If you need change, drop cash into the box next to the driver. When you are using nimoca, wave your card above the sensor. ● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠 있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가 오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다 ● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에 정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을 때에는 승차 구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이 경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음). ● 정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로 운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권 번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다. ● 목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고 안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다. ● 운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의 운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할 때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지 않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를 갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에 카드를 터치한다.

Frisco Burger, however, is different. Serving up classic American-style hamburgers, they moved into the Maizuru area of Fukuoka from Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, in July this year. The smell of grilling meat invites you into the cosy little establishment, which houses two tables and one counter. Owner Mr. Morisaki (Mike) moved to California when he was 19 and spent the next

choice between either a hamburger or cheeseburger. Mr. Morisaki shapes each patty after it is ordered and then carefully grills it and the buns together, seasoning only with salt and pepper. His burgers are juicy but not greasy, big but light in texture. Toppings are kept to the classic combination of onions, tomatoes, lettuce and pickles to compliment not dominate the meat. And the taste? Well, that needs no introduction. Other restaurants can keep their gimmicks, because some classics really can’t be improved on.

akata is well-known for its many local delicacies such as Hakata ramen noodles and motsunabe (offal hotpot – much nicer than it sounds!). Mizutaki (chicken broth hotpot) is another, which has been popular since way back in the Keio era (1865–8). No seasonings are added to the broth, which draws the full
flavor of the chicken out as it boils. The Hakata Hanamidori chain are among those keeping this authentic Hakata taste alive, with seven restaurants in Fukuoka, five in the Kansai area and even two in Dalian, China. Run by a poultry farming company, they only use meat from their own chickens, which are given a special feed containing seaweed and herb extracts. The meat has a rich umami flavor and is delivered directly from their processing facility in northern Kyushu for guaranteed freshness. A unique touch is the addition of deliciously firm chicken, yam meatballs and fresh liver. Their attention to detail is also evident in the classy, traditional interior where kimono-clad staff serve you at one of the counter seats overlooking the inner courtyard or in one of the private rooms. English, Chinese and Korean menus make this a great place for tourists, too.

akasu is Kyushu’s number one entertainment district. The area developed around the Nakashima bridge, which was built by Fukuoka’s first feudal lord, Nagamasa Kuroda, in 1600 to connect the Fukuoka and Hakata areas. In the latter Edo period, this strategic location was put to good use as the area developed into an entertainment district popular with both the samurai of Fukuoka and the merchants of Hakata. The merchants and samurai may have long since disappeared, but the number of nightspots in Nakasu has only grown. It has also longserved as a launch pad for new cultural movements, from the theatre popular in the Meiji period to the literature boom of the late 1890s and the appearance of cinemas in the 1910s. This month we take a closer look at the many delights of Nakasu.

Smooth-talking, gaudily dressed men and women act as self-appointed guides in this tantalizing neon jungle as they compete to entice potential customers into their particular establishment. Nakasu has traditionally only really come alive at night, but recent developments such as the Gate’s and Riverain shopping and entertainment complexes and The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum are transforming it into an area that can be enjoyed during the daytime too. Many events are also put on throughout the year, such as the popular Nakasu Jazz music festival held every August. Whichever side of Nakasu you seek, there’s only one way to truly appreciate its intoxicating appeal, and that’s to go there yourself.

第65回福岡国際マラソン選手権大会 The 65th Fukuoka International Open Marathon Championship
This international marathon celebrates its 65th anniversary this year! Moroccan veteran runner Jaouad Gharib won the race last year- achieving the victory he missed on his first attempt in 2006. Two groups of runners, each with a separate time limit, will take part. Group A’s starting point is Heiwadai Track and Field Stadium, whilst Group B begin the race at Ohori Park. Both groups continue through the south-west part of Fukuoka City and head east to the turning point in Kashii. Top international runners will participate in this acclaimed race, together with Japanese runners. Watch the race and show your support!

제 65회 후쿠오카 국제 마라톤 선수권 대회
올해로 65회째를 맞이하는 국제 마라톤. 2003,05년에 세계 선수권 2연패를 달성했던 모로코 출신의 38세 베테랑인 쟈우아드 가리브가 06년의 후쿠오카 국제 마라톤 선수권의 첫 출전 때는 놓쳤던 승리를 달성했다. 경기는 제한시간을 다르게 하여 A,B의 2그룹으로 구성해 A는 헤이와다이 육상 경기장에서 부터, B는 오호리공원에서 부터 스타트. 동시에 후쿠오카시의 남서부를 돌며 카시이를 반환점으로 하여 42.195km를 달린다. 일본 국내 선수는 물론 세계의 훌륭한 선수들도 다수 참가하는 국제 레이스. 올해는 어떤 스타가 탄생할 것 인지 기대가 된다.

New works of Fukuoka artist Takako Takeuchi who produces installation pieces based on the concept of "musubi" (joining) are the feature of the 3rd Hakata Art Stage series inside Amu Plaza, 3F. Using red ribbon and clothes, she portrays the “Rebirth of the Sun’s light”.
After 40 relentless years on the rock scene, Aerosmith’s original line-up is still in tact. The tour follows the band’s release of a new ballad this year, as well as Steve Tyler’s autobiography and solo single. Don’t miss the band’s first tour of Japan in seven years!
This five-piece band from Finland comes to Fukuoka for the first time, launching their debut album “Imaginary Future”! Their quick pace and sweet but melancholic melodies are reminiscent of The Drums. They will be supported by The Practice, The Wagon and various DJs.
Over 1,500 people were diagnosed with HIV or AIDS in Japan in 2010. December 1st is World AIDS Day, and the Chuo Health Center will provide free sameday anonymous HIV testing on the weekend. Reservations not required, only the first 50 people will receive free testing.

Atago Shrine’s biggest event of the year. Visitors take the chance to purify the body and ward off misfortune. Make your wish come true by completing a ritual involving walking across burning coals with bare feet. With this festival the shrine enters into New Year period.
Fukuoka City has long been famous for its performing artists. In the early Showa era this included 2,000 geigi of Hakata Kenban, but the number is down to only 21 today. Don’t miss this rare chance to see them dance, and to help keep traditional art alive in Fukuoka.

◊ Kego Park’s Iceless Skating rink An outdoor iceless skating rink will open at Tenjin’s Kego Park on Dec. 1. Instead of ice, it will feature a special plastic surface covered with wax, preventing wet bottoms after a pratfall. The rink will be open daily until Jan. 9 (Mon., Hol.), except for Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. For now, admission will be ¥500 for adults and ¥250 for kids in primary school and younger (The price is subject to change). Don’t pass up the perfect chance for central city skating!
◊ winter Power Conservation It’s expected that power supplies will be severely limited this winter with Kyushu Electric Power’s nuclear plants idled. Problems could develop because the cold weather causes people to turn on their heaters. Therefore, the utility is asking people to conserve electricity to prevent electric outage caused by power shortages from Dec. 1 to Mar. 30 from the hours of 8:00 to 21:00. They hope to reduce power consumption by at least 5% especially on weekdays from Dec. 19 to Feb. 3 (excluding Dec. 29 ~ Jan. 4). Residents are asked to access Fukuoka City’s website for power saving tips.

Partial subsidies are available for the costs of implanting microchips in cats, useful for identifying ownership, and for spaying the cats. A program to eliminate wild boar in the Aburayama district of Jonan-ku using dogs and guns is now underway. Residents are asked not to go to the mountain without reason from 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays until Jan. 13 (Fri.) Dog owners are also asked to use a leash when waling their pets.
