¬¬Trains 철도 There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Subway”, and “JR”. The subway links the two city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Airport. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel outside Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. 후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테쓰 전철’ ‘지하철’ ‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타, 덴진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘ 니시테쓰 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸, 가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나 신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.
¬¬Buses 버스 Go almost anywhere aboard Nishitetsu Bus in Fukuoka City! Rates vary by distance, but are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p. 5 ~ 6 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Sumiyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofukumachi. Board using the middle doors and get off using the front door. Pay as you get off. 버스 뒷문으로 타고, 앞쪽의 문으로 내린다. 운임은 내릴 때 지불.
How to ride 버스 타는 방법 ● Check the destination on the front and side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via the center doors. ● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board. If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the sensor, ticket not required. ● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the monitor next to a driver. The fee appears under the ticket number. ● Fees are displayed on the monitor above the driver. Match your ticket number to get your fee. ● Push the stop button to alert the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. ● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box next to the driver and get off from the front door. If you need change, drop cash into the box next to the driver. When you are using nimoca, wave your card above the sensor. ● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠 있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가 오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다 ● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에 정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을 때에는 승차 구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이 경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음). ● 정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로 운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권 번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다. ● 목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고 안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다. ● 운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의 운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할 때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지 않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를 갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에 카드를 터치한다.

우 동의 발상지라고 전해지는 조텐지 근처에 자리한 가게. 1890년에 창업한 면 제조공장에서 13 세기의 우동가루를 재현하여 만든 면이 호평을 받아, 런치타임에는 줄 서서 기다려야 할 정도다. 갈색을 띤 면에는 밀눈과 밀껍질을 첨가하여 씹을수록 밀의 향기가 입 안에 퍼진다. 또 부드러운 면이 많은 현재의 ‘하카타우동’과달리적당히부드러우면서도쫄깃쫄깃한 것이 특징. 면 자체의 맛을 음미하려면 심플한 카케우동 (450엔)이나 자루우동(550엔)을 추천한다. 토핑 종류도 10가지로 충실하며, 마루텐(어묵튀김)이나 고보텐(우엉튀김), 명란젓과 같은 하카타 명물이 갖추어져 있다. 참마와 명란젓을 올린 붓카케우동 (900엔)은 크리미한 식감에 매콤함이 감돌아 그 맛이 일품이다. 맛뿐만 아니라 양도 푸짐한데,가게가 혼잡한 런치타임을 제외하고는 우동 면 양에 관계없이 가격이 동일하다. (11:00~14:00 런치타임에는 3다마( 덩어리)까지) 역대 최다 기록은 12다마. 우동 이외에 소바도 있는데, 아라비키 메밀가루에 메밀껍질을 섞어 메밀 향이 가득하다. 소바 역시 점심시간을 제외하고는 무제한으로 제공한다.

There’s no need to stop at one helping either, because both udon and soba are all-you-can-eat (except 11:00–14:00, when the maximum is 3 helpings). Incidentally, the house record is 12 helpings!

his noodle restaurant was established way back in 1890, near to the supposed birthplace of Japanese udon noodles, Jotenji Temple. The techniques they use are even older, dating back to the 13th century. This strict adherence to tradition is one of the reasons for the restaurant’s popularity, with lengthy queues forming at lunchtime. The light brown noodles contain wheat germ and bran and have a marvelous texture; they are also slightly firmer than the soft noodles common in today’s “Hakata udon”. To enjoy the simple but delicious taste, try kake udon (udon in hot broth, ¥450) or zaru udon (chilled udon served on a bamboo tray, ¥550). atsuya Yamaguchi, the owner and chef of this tiny two-story bistro located on a narrow alley in Sumiyoshi, runs a one-man show, and a popular one at that! Yamaguchi apprenticed in French restaurants here in Fukuoka and for three years in France, mostly in Alsace and
Bourgogne. The first floor is his kitchen and a comfy counter for five. On the second floor there are five small tables, a wine fridge, an espresso counter and an eclectic collection of ornaments, souvenirs and nic nacks from France. ne Fukuoka's most stylish streets, Josui-dori has a more laid-back, sophisticated feel than busier areas such as Daimyo or Tenjin. The trees lining the road are also a welcome touch, making it a great spot for an early summer stroll. After turning into Josui-dori from Yakuinodori, you will soon see on your left the Kyushu Energy Science Center and Kyuden Memorial Gymnasium. A walk along Josui-dori will eventually lead us to the Fukuoka City Zoological Garden and Minami Park, but before that there are lots of shops to explore. Among the many furniture stores, flower shops and restaurants some of the most eye-catching are the confectioneries, where all manner of sweet delights can be found. Rest for a while at chocolate specialty shop Cacao Romance or tart and quiche shop Le Cercle, which are both also cafes. Down a small side street is French-style confectionery 16-ku, whose authentic almond-flavored baked biscuits are a specialty of owner-chef Mr. Mishima. shop Only One, with its distinctive big red door, or the wide open space created by the large windows at custom kitchen showroom Kitchen House. The flower shop Marji Orchids
won an urban design award for its architecture, which makes use of curved stone surfaces. In complete contrast, Japanese confectionery Muraoka Sohonpo is built in a traditional Japanese style. Trees line the path from the gate to the entrance, and the low-key mood brings to mind a Japanese teahouse. Kimono shop Tamaya, meanwhile, has a surprisingly modern interior. If you can drag yourself away from the shops, moving a little further up the hill leads to a dramatic change of scenery as Minami Park appears on the left-hand side like a green oasis in the heart of the city. As well as the zoological garden and botanical garden, there is also a viewing platform offering 360° views of Fukuoka. A fitting way to end an interesting and enjoyable walk.

around town 세련된 숍이 즐비한 조 스이 도오리에서 조금 다른 분위기를 띠는 곳이 이름 없는 채소가게. 일반 가정집 앞에 선반을 마련해 야채를 판매하고 있는데 간판은 걸려있지 않다. 딱 보면 채소가게란 것을 알 수 있으니 별 다른 장식이 없어도 된다고 생각한 걸까. 규슈산을 중심으로 판매 중인 채소 중 일부는 슈퍼보다 30% 정도 저렴하기도. 외관도 가격도, 과거로 돌아간 듯한 가게이다.

tanding out from all the other stylish shops along Josui-dori is a nameless vegetable shop (yaoya). They sell vegetables in front of a private dwelling without a shop sign. Look for the flag saying "Ouridashi" (Sale!). Or maybe they don't need a sign as it’s obvious what they are doing! Much of the produce is sourced from the Amagi wholesale market and some are 30% less than other supermarket and possibly fresher. Enjoy a Showa-era experience from the setting and old school display and service.

Chatting with Louisa in ELLE CAFÉ ne rainy day before lunchtime, we had a rendezvous with a nice French lady at ELLE CAFE. Wanting to make the occasion a bit more special, we made use of the café’s unique VIP room. The room for six to eight people, with a mirrored wall, small tables and a round sofa is Parisian in feel. It’s decorated with French-ethnic-style cushions and other delightful interior items that you can purchase at the counter. Available by the hour, it can be used for a meeting with someone special, a birthday party, or a business meeting. As soft sunlight creeping in through the white interior of the café made us forget the dull weather, our guest appeared: Louisa Babaci, the deputy-director of the French Institute in Fukuoka. Louisa studied international relations and Japanese at university in Paris and worked
for educational organizations and photo agencies in international cities like Paris, New York, and Tokyo. She was assigned by the French foreign affairs to her current position in 2006. She is in charge of the language school, university cooperation and works on various cultural projects including cultural events, art exhibitions, lectures, conferences, and reception parties. When she was in France, she had several favorite cafés near her home and used them in turn according to the weather, her mood, and situation. In French culture, a café is basically a place to meet someone but can also be used to read, rest and unwind. “I usually order coffee or latte, but when I meet my friends after work, I choose wine.” We ordered cakes salés along with a glass of white wine. Cake salés means “salt cake” in French and is more an appetizer with an apéritif . The Tallis Scholars are a worldrenowned British vocal ensemble that specializes in performing Renaissance-era a cappella sacred vocal music. At this concert they will perform famous pieces including Thomas Tallis’s Lamentations of Jeremiah and Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem.
The 24m-high Shiraito Waterfall is a popular scenic spot that is ideal for escaping the summer heat. This festival features drum performances, rice cake tossing, all-you-can-eat nagashi somen (“flowing noodles”), and yamame fishing. It all takes place among beautiful scenery that includes some 300-year-old trees!

This monthly event gives exchange students a chance to learn about Japanese culture. A lecture by a local businessman, politician or academic is followed by a talk from students on their cross-cultural experiences. The intercultural mixer afterwards is a great chance to meet people.
Dancer Mitsuyo Uesugi learned from Kazuo Ono and is well-regarded around the globe. At this event, films of her 2007 solo work Black Diamond, 2008 work Metal Red Woman, and 2010 work Baby Melancolia – the sixth dream will be followed by a live performance. A great chance to experience her unique worldview.

1974년에 미국에서 시작된 남성만으로 구성된 코미디 발레단. 일본에서도 큰 인 기를 끌고 있다. 유머뿐 아니라 고도의 기술과 예술성으로 세계적으로도 인정 받는 이들은 연간 무려 125번에 가까운 공연을 소화하고 있다. 이번 공연에서는 ‘빈사의 백조’, ‘쇼피니아나’, ‘파키타’ 등 을 선보인다. 일본을 향해 힘내라는 따 스한 메시지가 담긴 무대이다.

¬¬Hakata Port International ¬¬Hakata Traditional Craft Terminal Renovated! Center Opened
¬¬Environment Cleanup Event
Many aesthetic and functional improvements were completed recently at the Hakata Port International Terminal. A new escalator and elevator were installed to help passengers board the New Camellia ferry and the Beetle and Kobee hydrofoils which link Fukuoka to Busan. The interior received some modifications including the use of Hakata Ori (textile) and Hakata-bei (walls made of earth and old roof tiles) so visitors can obtain a feel for the city’s history and culture. Figuring out how to board buses and pay has been a challenge for visitors. Now tourist and traffic information for Fukuoka and Kyushu will be available through newly installed digital signage systems.
The Love Earth Clean Up 2011 event will be held on Jun. 12 (Sun.) from 9:00. It’s the 20th anniversary for this popular event. Citizens, companies and municipalities clean beaches, rivers and parks together. About 36,000 volunteers attended last year in Fukuoka City. Venues include: Obaru Beach, Nakagawa Riv. (Seiryu Park), Fukuhama Beach, Nishi Park, Ohori and Maizuru Park, Momochihama, Ikinomatsubara Beach, Futamigaura, Nokonoshima, and others. The event has spread to Busan, Korea! Reservations are not required. Go directly to a venue with your work gloves. The event is held in light rain but cancelled in heavy rain.
A new facility devoted to Fukuoka’s traditional crafts opened in Kamikawabata-machi, Hakata-ku on Apr. 7, 2011 in a two-storied wooden building which previously served as a community center for 34 years. On the first floor there is an exhibition space and a cafe. Occasionally workshops and lectures are held. On the second floor there are approximately 80 works on permanent display including those of Kisaburo Ogawa (Hakata Ori), and late Yoichi Kojima (Hakata doll). ¬¬Fukuoka FC Supported Film Showing The Fukuoka Film Commission (Fukuoka FC) is a joint public and private organization established in 2003 and consists of 17 municipalities including Fukuoka City and the chamber of commerce. It supports and facilitates the on-location shooting of movies, dramas, and television commercials. A new film Kiseki (Miracle) directed by Hirokazu Koreeda will be open on theater screens on Jun. 4 (Sat.) in Kyushu. In this story children make a wish for a “miracle” that is said to occur on the day of the opening of Kyushu Shinkansen. It was shot at Momochi Elementary School, Gintencho (Zasshonokuma), Hakata Station, and in Ohori and Maizuru Park. ¬¬Hakata Port Tower – Hakata Port’s Symbol Standing 100 meters high the Hakata Port Tower was built in 1964. The free observation deck look-out offers excellent views of ships entering and leaving the port as well as a sparkling view of the city’s skyline at night. The Mt. Abura Civic Forest is located about 9km from the center of Fukuoka City. Mt. Abura’s peak is 597 meters high and 70.7 hectares area features an athletic field, 15 bungalows, camping space for 25 tents. Reservations for the summer season begin on Jun. 1 and the season runs from Jul. 20 ~ Aug. 30. Additional fees are required for bungalows and tents. Call or visit after 9:00, Jun. 1 to make reservations (Jun. 1: phone only). Capacity per day is limited to around 200 so hurry!
