The governor said he plans to reexamine the issue with the intent of keeping the dam because the cost of removing it is greater than originally thought. The plan to remove the dam was put forward by former Governor Yoshiko Shiotani in December 2002. It was the first time in Japan plans were formulated to remove a dam from a river and return it to its natural state. 熊本電鉄、運輸、不動産に特化 Dentetsu Alters Business Plan The Kumamoto City-based Kumamoto Dentetsu revealed it would focus in the future on its railroad, bus, and real estate businesses, while withdrawing from its unprofitable operation of leisure facilities.

The move is part of a seven-year corporate restructuring plan. The company's railroad is chronically in the red, and the bus operations have lost money every year since 2003. All seven directors resigned to take responsibility. 広告代理店「アジア進出」を橋渡し BBDO J West Signs with Foreign Sites The Fukuoka City-based advertising agency BBDO J West announced it has signed a business agreement with Baidu, China's largest search engine site, and Daum, South Korea's largest portal site. The agency hopes to use this agreement to support the efforts of firms in such industries as tourism and food products to advertise on the sites. The agency says they are the first in Kyushu to form an agreement with the two companies. In the future, they plan to create advertising linked to Baidu searches and to create special content for Daum. They hope to achieve 100 million yen in revenue from the agreement by next March. ハマグリ豊漁地域に活力 Clam Harvest Recovering The regional clam harvest has been declining in recent years due to the effect of overharvesting and development, but the volume being taken by watermen in Kumamoto and Fukuoka Prefectures has been rising. The harvest at the mouth of the Midori River in Kumamoto, Kyushu's biggest production area, has risen 12-fold in the past four years. Fishing industry insiders attribute this to changes in the water environment and tougher regulations on overharvesting.

ヒマワリでバス走らせよう Children to Grow Sunflowers for Biofuel The Nishi-Nippon Railway Co. (Nishitetsu) announced it has launched a program called the Smart Environmental Project in which they will have children at 30 Fukuoka City primary schools, kindergartens, and nursery schools grow sunflowers, which will then be used to produce a biofuel for their buses. The company will provide the seeds for each of the schools to grow at least 100 sunflowers apiece. They expect to convert this to about 30 liters of fuel, which can be used for 60 kilometers. The program is being started to commemorate the company's 100th anniversary, and to promote environmental awareness. 熊本市が「水」検定 Kumamoto Checks Its Water Kumamoto City, with a population of more than 500,000, is the only city in Japan to rely exclusively on underground water for its municipal water supply. The volume of the water has been declining in recent years, however, and to raise citizen awareness of the importance of water, the city will conduct a certification test with three levels on the subject of water starting in August.

Official textbooks already are on sale in area bookstores. 新ケーキ発売、サツマイモ葉と茎も材料 New Satsumaimo Cake in Kanyoa Festivalo, a company producing and selling Western-style confections in Kanyoa, Kagoshima Prefecture, has developed a cake whose ingredients include the edible leaves and stems of a new variety of satsumaimo, or sweet potato, a special product of the prefecture. It is being sold as a seasonal product. The new type of potato was developed in 2004 by the National Agricultural Research Center for the KyushuOkinawa Region. It can be harvested four or five times in a single summer, and is rich in iron and vitamin E. 長島風力発電所が完成 Nagashima Wind Generating Plant Completed Nagashima Windhill Co., a Kyushu Electric Power subsidiary for wind power generation, announced that the construction of 21 windmills in Nagashima-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture, has been completed.

The windmills were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. The blades turn on a diameter of 92 meters, and each windmill generates 2,400 kW of electricity, making them the largest in Japan. The total output of the plant is 50,400 kW, which is the largest for a Kyushu wind generating plant.

西鉄の新デザインバス運行開始 Nishitetsu Newly Designed Buses Roll Fukuoka City-based Nishi-Nippon Tetsudo (Nishitetsu) began operation of 52 route buses with a new design to commemorate its 100th anniversary later this year. A total of 42 went into service in the Fukuoka City area, and 10 began operating in the Kitakyushu area. The new design features five colored stripes running from the roof to the side of the bus. It was the first design change for the company's buses in 33 years. タクシー運転手登録制度、福岡、北九州圏も開始 New Taxi Driver Registration System The national registration system for taxi drivers, which has already been implemented in Tokyo and Osaka, was extended to 11 more regions, including the Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu areas.

It applies to people hired as drivers by taxicab companies, and it is a condition for employment. The prefectural police attribute this to efforts to end drunk driving. 風力発電購入単価 1.5 円アップ Wind Power Purchase Price Increases Kyushu Electric Power announced that in the current fiscal year, it would increase by 1.5 yen to 11 yen the maximum unit price of wind power it purchases that has been generated by independent operators. This is the first time the company has increased its own purchase price. They also decided to ask for a deposit for all new contracts with these operators to prevent their cancellation for trivial reasons. 九州、少子化加速の構造 Kyushu's Child Population Drops According to the results of the 2005 national census, the population of Kyushu fell 0.7% from the previous census in 2000 to 13,353,000 people. It was the first decline in regional population in 35 years. The people born during the second postwar baby boom in the early 70s are now in their late 30s. Combined with the low birthrate, the number of people in the child-rearing group will continue to fall in the future.

Yasushi Furukawa said the prefecture plans to export Saga brand beef to such countries as the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. They hope to use this export outlet to profit from the taste for beef among the upper classes of those countries, as well as luxury hotels located there. The prefecture already exports beef to Hong Kong and the United States. ボーナス期待薄 Low Expectations for Bonuses The Fukuoka City-based Nishi-Nippon City Bank announced the results of a survey of 480 housewives in Fukuoka Prefecture regarding summer bonuses. A total of 18.4% of the respondents expected lower bonuses from those in the past, an increase from last year of 5.4 percentage points. The percentage of housewives who planned to put the money in savings accounts rose to 54.4%, and the answers in this category have now increased every year since the survey began in 1994. The second-most popular choice was travel and leisure, selected by 37.1% of the respondents, an increase of 4.7 percentage points from the previous year.

大分県域 JA が発足 Oita Prefecture Regional JA Created A total of 16 of the 23 Japan Agricultural Cooperative Associations (JA) in Oita Prefecture merged to create JA Oita on the 1st. This regional association will cover most of the prefecture. It is the second regional JA in Kyushu, after one in Saga, and the fifth nationwide. The objectives of the merger are to strengthen their operating base, ensure a large volume of agricultural production, and establish a regional brand for agricultural products to boost sales. 北九州の町・大字エリア、限界集落化が急増 Kitakyushu Elderly Population Rising A survey by the University of Kitakyushu found that as of the end of March this year, a total of 20.6% of the city's districts at the machi or o-aza level had populations in which at least 33.3% of the residents were 65 years of age or older. They also found that 16 of these districts had an elderly population of greater than 50%.

Compared to a previous survey in September 1997, that is a ten-fold increase in the number of districts whose elderly population is onethird, and a three-fold increase in those districts with an elderly population of at least half.

元郵便局員画家、仏で映画主演 Retired Postal Worker Stars in Movie Ken'ichi Morimoto, a retired postal worker from Mashiki-machi, Kumamoto Prefecture, has become the star of a French movie titled Monsieur Morimoto. Morimoto retired from the postal service in 2000 and went to Paris by himself to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. The director conceived of the movie after he met Morimoto in an art gallery. It is the first time Morimoto has ever performed as an actor. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, during which Morimoto made a personal appearance. 門司―釜山、日韓最安のフェリー Moji-Busan Ferry Offers Cheapest Fare Agreement was reached for regularly scheduled ferry service between the Port of Moji in Kitakyushu and Busan, South Korea, and began on June 21. The one-way fare for adults will be 8,000 yen, the most inexpensive on the sea route to Busan.

The service will be operated by the South Korean company C&Cruise.
