Akiyama said he wanted everyone to practice with an awareness of the team's goals. 西部ガスも値上げ圧縮 Saibu Gas Mulling a Lower Fee Increase The fees for gas used in the home are adjusted through a system that automatically reflects changes in the price of liquid natural gas. Based on this system, the Fukuoka City-based Saibu Gas plans to raise its fees in the January-March quarter next year. The decreased volatility of liquid natural gas prices in recent weeks, however, has prompted Saibu Gas to seriously reconsider the amount by which they will raise rates. 九州の工場立地、11% 減 Kyushu Factory Locations Down The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry revealed the results of their survey of factory placement trends for the first half of the calendar year. During that period, a total of 97 factories were planned to be built in Kyushu's seven prefectures, an 11.8% drop from the previous year. The ministry says the primary factor was the sharp decline in totals for Oita Prefecture, where companies in the shipbuilding industry were very active last year. トヨタ九州と高速道「直結」 Toyota May Get Own Expressway Exit Fukuoka Prefecture and the city of Miyawaka are mulling the construction of a special exit from the Kyushu Expressway to serve the Toyota Kyushu Plant and a nearby industrial park for affiliated companies. The exit would have the new ETC system using contactless payment cards. The aim is to provide easy access to the worksites and to obtain revenue. Construction is estimated to cost 1.8 billion yen. If approved, it could open in 2010.

宮崎県、太陽光発電の企業公募 Miyazaki to Attract Solar Power Companies At a regularly scheduled press conference on the 21st, Miyazaki Prefecture Governor Hideo Higashikokubaru announced that starting next year, the prefecture will work to attract companies from around the country to build large solar power generating plants here. The prefecture has the third-highest total of sunny hours per year in the nation. This is the first time a local government in Japan will implement a program to attract solar power companies to locate in its jurisdiction. 福岡県知事が初の台湾入り Governor Led Delegation to Taiwan Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso led a group of 34 local business and academic leaders on a three-day visit to Taiwan. The group included officials from Yaskawa Electric, JR Kyushu, JA, and a council for Kyushu tourism promotion. They met with leaders in the local business community to forge closer ties in semiconductor manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. It is the first time a Fukuoka Prefecture governor visited Taiwan since Japan ended formal diplomatic relations in 1972. 九州新幹線に欠陥材 Defective Materials on Kyushu Shinkansen It was discovered that defective materials were used for panels on bridges built for the Kagoshima-Yatsuhiro route of the Kyushu Shinkansen that began operation in 2004. The panels were sold by the Aso Co. of Iizuka, Fukuoka Prefecture. The organization responsible for building the Shinkansen said that inspections were conducted before service began, and there were no problems with either safety or durability. They added that they hadn't received a report on the problems yet. 中国クルーズ船、寄港地九州が熱視線 Chinese Cruise Ship Companies Eying Kyushu Fukuoka City and other Kyushu cities are growing increasingly interested in promoting themselves as ports of call to cruise ship companies whose cruises originate in China. The objective is to stimulate local economies. Of the 15 blocs nationwide, however, the average amount of the parental assistance in Kyushu was the second lowest. 九州・韓国経済圏へ一歩 Kyushu-Korean Economic Sphere The mayors, government officials, and business leaders of the sister cities Fukuoka City and Busan, South Korea, launched the Fukuoka – Busan Economic Cooperation Council on the 20th. The objective is to work for the creation of a supranational economic sphere in the area. After studies are conducted, the council will formulate and adopt joint projects next August. The declaration issued at the end of the summit focused on strengthening ties between the two regions and working together in the tourism sector. トヨタ九州、生産 9.2% 減 Toyota Kyushu Production Drops Toyota Motors Kyushu revealed that its vehicle production in the first half of the current fiscal year fell 9.2% from the yearbefore period to less than 184,700 units. The company's original projections called for a 10% production decline for the full fiscal year, but with prospects for the second half unclear, actual production may be cut further. Roughly 60% of the company's production is exported to the United States, and demand fell sharply in that country after June.
JR 九州、基金運用悪化で減益 JR Kyushu Posts Profit Declines On its consolidated interim report for the current fiscal year, JR Kyushu revealed it had recorded record high revenue for the third straight year, but that both current profit and net profit fell for the second year in a row. The primary surge in revenue came from the station building and real estate operations. Income from this sector alone rose 14.1% from the previous year. Meanwhile, the lower profit resulted from the diminished return on investments by the operations stabilization fund caused by turbulence in international financial markets. Profits from this activity dropped by about 2.5 billion yen.

韓国人旅行者は九州好き Korean Travelers Like Kyushu The Fukuoka City-based market survey company Hospitable found that more than 20% of South Korean tourists who used the high-speed jetfoil ships between Fukuoka City and Busan have visited Kyushu at least three times, and that many of the repeat visitors come for the shopping. The company thinks that the number of Korean tourists to Kyushu will continue to rise despite the rising yen and depreciating won. About 70% of the visitors are in their 20s and 30s. 九州の対米輸出「自動車」が 4 割超 Autos Account for 40% of Kyushu Exports Moji Customs conducted a survey for 2007 that shows exports to the U.S. rose 1.6% from the previous year to 1.975 trillion yen, while imports climbed 18.5% to 437.8 billion yen. The U.S. receives the third-highest amount of Kyushu exports at 13.6%, following China's 19.3% and South Korea's 15.1%. The primary product exported to the U.S. is automobiles, which account for 43.3% of all Kyushu exports to that country by value. In second place are digital cameras and other electric equipment, which account for 21.4%.

It applies the methods of real estate investment to focus on the profits generated by specific properties. Established in March 2007, the fund's previous investments have totaled 2.7 billion yen. The latest investment is in an Oita City company that produces semiconductor devices. 北九州市、コンベンション会場無料化検討 Kitakyushu Mulls Free Convention Sites As part of its emergency economic measures, the city of Kitakyushu is seriously considering offering the use of local facilities as convention sites for free to attract users. They expect the outlays for food and lodging by convention participants to boost the local economy. The city is also considering including private sector facilities as well as municipally owned facilities in the same policy. A formal decision is expected by the end of the year.

The reasons cited were the sharp declines in the American market, the destination of most of Toyota Kyushu's exports, and the deterioration in financial markets worldwide. 九州で中国人を支援 Chinese Entrepreneurs in Kyushu KKS, a group providing support and advice on Japanese law and business practices to Chinese who want to start companies in Kyushu, was formed in Fukuoka City. The organization receives voluntary contributions from 31 Chinese capital-affiliated companies in Kyushu, and its efforts will cover the entire island in addition to Yamaguchi and Okinawa prefectures. The group also hopes to improve the image of Chinese products, which have suffered from incidents involving tainted food products and other problems.
