he recently Kamakiri Udon is the sister shop of Niwakaya Chosuke, an izakaya in Yakuin whose handmade udon were so popular as a meal finisher that it decided to open a dedicated udon and donburi (“rice bowl”) shop. The noodles, which

are made in-house from Itoshima flour, are soft yet resilient and retain a slightly wheaty flavor. You can enjoy them in warm bowl of flavorful broth or cold with the dipping sauce on the side. Kamakiri Udon offers the best of both the Sanuki and Hakata styles of udon. The donburi include the perennial favorites—katsudon, oyakodon and tendon—and you can also order a mini size (¥300~) to go with your udon. Last but not least, don’t miss the eyecatching “free small glass of beer anytime”. As the name suggests, you can order one glass of beer at no charge, day or night. If you’d like to continue beyond your complimentary beer, you can choose from a wide range of shochu and sake. am lucky enough to have experienced life in several different countries, yet after having lived in Japan for many years, I must say that the Japanese attitude towards work is, on the whole, the most loyal and self-dedicated that I have ever witnessed. It is no surprise that the Japanese work ethic is world famous, having seen their sense of civic order and respect for each other. Japan recovered after the horrendous Second World War in record time.and by the late sixties the country had become a world leader - this rapid transformation has everything to do with Japan’s work ethic, with everyone working in unison for the same goal. In my own household, my wife is not taking any vacation this year, as she is too busy in her company (which always comes first), even though she is contributing financially to my trip with our two children to France (nearing

with all your might’ seems to be the basic definition of ‘work’ in Japan. This starts very early in life. A young kid introducing himself or herself in a kindergarten, or simply saying good morning at the top of his or her lungs, will do it with something approaching zeal. Even the most menial of jobs are performed with zeal, including some of those involving interaction with the public that make you wonder - and this is what I really want to talk about - if the job actually serves a purpose at all. We’ve all seen those worksites on the side of the road: a great big hole, and half a dozen workers, using heavy duty machinery, with one guy in uniform and a helmet in front , gesturing frantically, indicating which way to go to avoid the obstruction. As though if it weren’t for him, kindly telling me where to go, I would have undoubtedly rammed into the workers, hit the heavy machinery and plunged to my death down the seemingly unfathomable hole… why thank you, Sir! Not to mention the battalion of parking
attendants placed in strategic spots at the mall, sporting equally great uniforms. They strut around with the same seriousness and zeal, as if to say, “Boy, aren’t you glad I’m here!” Well, I would be, if you could only tell me where to find a parking space... In all fairness, I have to admit that some of them do try and help, but most just gesture in one direction, which just so happens to be towards the entrance to the car park. Another of my personal favorites is the girl who shows you which ticket counter has just opened at the train station. Now, after having followed the intricate waiting line, you find yourself facing the thirteen counters, which remarkably enough are, most of the time, all open, or at least ten of them. In France you’d be lucky if four or five were open (if there’s not yet another strike on, that is). When one does become available, it is made pretty obvious: a green light flashes, a small screen displays the window number and the worker behind the counter says, “next please”. But on top of all that, a young woman (and I hope this is not her

These are not criticisms - the sheer number of sales staff in department stores used to make me dizzy, but at least they all have a job. Thanks to the zealous Japanese way of working together, the trains run on time. A couple of decades ago in Mexico I would wait for a train and hope it would come on time - the Spanish word for wait and hope is the same“esperar”. It might sometimes make things a little slower, but I think that on the whole this zeal helps Japanese society to work as well as it does - dodesho?

The organisation’s co-president, Joëlle Sambuc-Bloise, is also at the helm of a successful company that offers consulting and investment opportunities, including in sectors such as renewable energy as well as medical and biological technology. She spoke to us about her experiences of working in Japan, the issues that face women pursuing a career on a local or international scale, and her opinion on Prime Minister Abe’s recent claim that powerful women are key to Japan’s future economic success. Sumo Kyushu Basho
A celebration of Yanagawa-born tanka poet and children’s songwriter, Hakushu Kitahara, who passed away on Nov. 2, 1942. Around 80 boats decorated with lanterns float down Yanagawa river at night in a tribute to Hakushu, and the sky is illuminated with Autumn fireworks.
14 festival floats weighing two to four tons each and adorned with lions, dragons and other symbols are carried through the streets of Karatsu on Nov. 3. This Autumn festival has been held since the late 1500s, and this year around 500,000 people are expected to attend over three days.
Fans and insiders alike will be looking to the November Grand Sumo Tournament for a spectacular show as yokozuna Hakuho aims for his 5th championship in a row. Wrestlers from many nations including Mongolia, Bulgaria, Brazil, Georgia and Japan. See sumo at its best!

1942年11月2日が命日の北原白秋 （詩人・童謡作家・歌人）を偲 び、彼の故郷である柳川で行われ る幻想的な祭り。61回目を数える 今年も、ほおずき提灯やあんどん で飾られた約80隻のどんこ舟が 約1,200人を乗せ、川岸で演奏さ れる白秋の童謡や歌曲の響きのな か夜の柳川をパレードする。フィ ナーレには、仕掛け花火が秋の夜 空を鮮やかに彩る。
唐津市南城内にある唐津神社の秋 祭り。三日間で約50万人が訪れ る大祭は、日本三大くんちの一つ だ。獅子や龍などをかたどった14 台の曳山はいずれも華やかで勇ま しい。見どころは11月3日の御旅 所神幸（おたびしょしんこう）。 唐津神社を9時半に出発し、西の 浜明神台まで巡行した14台の巨大 な曳山が勢いよく砂地へ曳き込ま れ、明神台前に勢揃いする「曳き 込み」は見逃せない。

◊ Fukuoka City Museum Revamps Permanent Exhibition Room On Nov. 3, the Fukuoka City Museum (3 Momochihama, Sawara-ku) will open its revamped Permanent Exhibition Room, marking the first major renovation since the museum opened in 1990. Highlights include new displays on the Kan no Wa no Na no Kokuo Gold Seal and Hakata Gion Yamakasa. The gold seal exhibit gives visitors a closer look at the national treasure and provides a variety of information pertaining to the seal. The Yamakasa exhibit features an actual kakiyama racing float. With multilingual information and hands-on displays, the new-and-improved museum is sure to stimulate all of your senses. http://museum.city.fukuoka.jp/
◊ ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Finals The International Skating Union (ISU) will hold its Grand Prix of Figure Skating, one of the world's most important skating competitions, at Fukuoka Marine Messe from Dec. 5 to Dec. 8. This is the last major competition before the Winter Olympics in Sochi (Russia) in February and will feature Japan's Olympicbound figure skaters. Tickets for the general public go on sale Oct. 20. ◊ Karatomari Oyster Hut Opens Nov. 1 Oyster season is finally here! Enjoying fresh, charcoal-roasted oysters at an oyster hut is one of Fukuoka's fall traditions. Huts open in the fall and run until late March. The

Some invasive species threaten the existing ecosystem by eating or otherwise damaging indigenous plants and animals. To protect Fukuoka's biodiversity, remember three simple rules: 1) Don't introduce potentially harmful non-native species, 2) Don't abandon exotic pets or plants, and 3) Don't let invasive species spread to other regions.
◊ Fukuoka/Tenjin Time Travel: Bringing 150 Years of Tenjin to Life Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting, under the supervision of the Fukuoka City Museum, has digitized historical documents and photos provided by local companies, museums and photographers and combined them with computer graphics to create a video record of the past 150 years of Tenjin.
