Birds of a feather?
Owl Cafe
Cat cafes are so 2013! This year the trend is definitely owl cafes, and Fukuoka’s first opened inside the Kawabata Arcade this January. After an explanation of rules and protocol, assistants place owls of various breeds and sizes on customers’ arms, shoulders and heads. The birds seem to enjoy being stroked and don’t mind cameras without flashes.
Fashion Week Fukuoka 2014 Kyushu’s biggest annual fashion event takes place in Fukuoka City this March, showcasing the local fashion industry with great lineup of events, fashion shows, and sales. The concept is to attract stylish visitors from both Kyushu and abroad to create buzz around budding Fukuoka’s fashion scene. This year’s motto is “Play! FUKU-OKA!”. A large selection of shops in Hakata, Tenjin, Daimyo, Yakuin and Imaizumi hold special sales and events, turning Fukuoka City into a massive playground for fashion. The 2014 festival mascot is “Licca-chan” (similar to USA’s Barbie doll) known as fashion’s biggest fan in Japan! The main event, FACo is the grand finale on Mar. 23.

The food at Sabaina (which means "really fun" in Khmer) is made using Cambodia's famed raw black pepper and other spices. While the aroma is spicy, the flavor is mellow and delicious. Have a refreshingly hoppy Angkor Beer with your meal and you'll swear you're in Cambodia. "I like to cook, but I love talking even more," admits Funabashi, so if you go, don't forget to compliment your chef and ask him about his travels.

YANAGIBASHI MARKET
Y
anagibashi Market, or ‘Hakata’s kitchen’ as it is sometimes known, has been supplying Fukuoka's restaurants and residents alike with the freshest fish, vegetables, meat and other local produce for nearly 100 years. We visited the charming arcade on a Saturday morning where we sampled delicious seasonal treats like strawberry mochi and grilled oysters, and discovered intriguing new ingredients such as blood clams and mirugai, which are spitting shellfish - don’t get too close! At one stall, we saw how traditional methods are used to make the katsuboshi (dried fish flakes) in dashi, which gives soba and udon broths their flavour. The stall owners were friendly and welcoming and we left with a mix of delicacies for an al fresco lunchtime feast. Visit and discover Yanagibashi’s charm for yourself!

ollowing a Mongol invasion in 1274, the shogunate ordered 20km of stone wall to be built along different parts of Hakata Bay to defend against a second attack. The longest section of this fortification was approximately 3km, in Imazu in the city’s west. A 200m section was excavated and is now a National Historic Site. In addition to the ruins, this short hike takes you through the surrounding pine grove - an iconic feature around Japan’s coastline - the beautiful Nagahama swimming beach, and the magnificent panorama from the top of Bishamon-yama. Take a few hours to enjoy some of Fukuoka’s hidden natural and cultural treasures!
The Hike
Fortification remains surrounded by pine forest
The first half of the hike is a gentle stroll through the residential area of Imazu and the pine grove that runs along the Nagahama coastline and is home to the fortification ruins. This is followed by a climb to the top of nearby Bishamon-yama, which commands a beautiful panorama of the bay, including the area covered earlier in the hike. The return passes through the very old Shofuku Temple and surrounding streets before getting back on the bus. Details online: fukuoka-now.com/ genkoborui

Kyle Ricks
W
hen it comes to haute cuisine, New Yorker Kyle Ricks knows his onions. He has worked in top end NYC eateries, alongside famous fusion chefs such as David Bouley, and privately for A-list celebrities such as JayZ, Beyonce and Jerry Seinfeld, catering to their sometimes ‘finicky’ requirements. Kyushu’s energy, people, and palm trees first attracted him to Fukuoka, which he finds relaxing compared to the Big Apple. At Serre, his ‘New York Style French’ restaurant in the Nakasu district, diners can enjoy his innovative cooking, such as slow roasted fish with balsamic pumpkin puree and apple, in a natural setting overlooking the river. Serre is French for greenhouse - whilst Kyle enjoys sourcing fresh ingredients at Yanagibashi market or from his friend’s farm in Saga, he has set up his own nursery on site to grow herbs he cannot find. His customers seem to ‘really dig it’ and he sees Fukuoka as an exciting city on the cusp of ‘something great’; in other words, a fertile ground for planting the seeds of new culinary ventures. Karatsu Getaway DELIGHTFUL DAY TRIP OR WEEKEND DESTINATION
K
aratsu is perhaps best known for Karatsu Kunchi, its spectacular annual festival, its historic castle, or the famous, freshly-served (live!) squid dishes. While these are all excellent reasons to visit Karatsu, there’s so much more. Fukuoka Now’s editor Nick was joined by Kamil, our hiking expert, to explore beyond the basics. Here are some of the historic, cultural and natural sites they found, as well as the recently opened and highly recommended Kyushu Olle Karatsu walking course. Access our website for details, photos, maps and more to plan your Karatsu getaway!

A must see - The Former Takatori Residence. Kamil and Nick kick off their trip at tiny Nijinomatsubara Sta. inside Karatsu’s famous pine forest.

1 Nijinomatsubara Nijinomatsubara is one of the three largest pine-covered areas (matsubara) in Japan, stretching along a 5km arc of the Karatsu coastline in the shape of a rainbow (niji). With a road running along its length amidst some 1 million black pine trees, Nijinomatsubara acts as a scenic gateway to Karatsu.
2 Kyouzangama Situated at the foot of Kagamiyama, just seven minutes walk from Nijinomatsubara Station, this traditional Karatsu-yaki (ware) workshop is known for crafting beautiful ceramics used in tea ceremony. In addition to the gallery, it also offers a rare opportunity to tour the workshop and experience making or decorating (etsuke) Karatsu-yaki.
Nijinomatsubara Station in the middle of the pine grove. It’s a short walk to the beach or to the foot of Kagamiyama - a great vantage point over Karatsu. A new observation deck opens this March.
Decorating fees: small plate ¥1,500, tea cup ¥1,100 Reservations recommended Dec.~Feb. Details: www.kyouzan.co.jp
Ceramics can be picked up or shipped for a fee to your home after being fired (takes approx. two months).
The matsu tree and needles are prominent local images often included in the designs of Karatsu-yaki.
5 Former Takatori Residence The unique mix of Western and Japanese architecture is apparent from the gate. The kitchen offers a glimpse into daily life. Just 800m from Karatsu Castle, the Former Takatori Residence offers a glimpse into a different period of Japanese history. This seaside Meiji Era estate of Saga coal mine magnate Koreyoshi Takatori (18501927) features magnificent gardens and more than 30 lavish rooms. It escaped demolition when the family could no longer maintain it, and was kindly donated to the city in 1997. In 1998 it was designated an Important Cultural Asset of Japan, and has since been carefully restored to original condition and opened to the public in 2007. The main residence was built over 100 years ago in a style that was very modern for the time. Takatori enjoyed the finer aspects of Japanese culture, with a spectacular Noh theatre and tea house on premises. His fine taste shows in the mix of western and Japanese style that is a special feature of the house, including imported European lamps, Italian marble, western fireplace and furniture. Audio guidance in several languages provided. English speaking guides available sometimes. http://www.karatsu-kankou.jp/takatori.html

3 Matsukin Shoyu Yobuko’s famous squid ikitsukuri, or live squid sashimi, is hard to imagine without quality soy sauce, and local maker Matsukin provides around 90% of the soy sauce used in the area. Amazake ice cream is their latest hit product. Amazake (甘酒) is a traditional non-alcoholic Japanese drink made from kouji (麹), or fermented rice, and said to be very healthy (think Asia’s yoghurt). www.kamada.co.jp The showroom is filled with soy related souvenir ideas.
Small bits of rice add a pleasing texture to the Amazake ice cream: ¥250 per cup.
4 Saisson D’or Mention the name Yobuko, the port town just 15 kilometers from central Karatsu, and most will think of the town’s famous squid sashimi. But there’s more and we found somewhere truly special. At Saisson D’or Hitoshi Maeyama serves fine Japanese/French cuisine using only seasonal local ingredients, with a focus on seafood and vegetables. Patrons in the know come from as far away as Tokyo to enjoy his artistry and flavors in a spectacular setting offering sunset views over the bay. www.saissondor.com
A feast for all the senses. Hitoshi Maeyama personally prepares each dish.
Bright and airy, the cozy dining room overlooks a bay.
6 Doheigama Nestled amongst trees in the mountainside, this father and son workshop has been producing top-end and highly appraised Karatsu ware for over thirty years. The remote location makes it hard to reach, but it’s worth the effort! Call in advance to arrange for a visit to their tea house which is surrounded by fifty sakura trees and views of the valley below. Being served matcha by the artists, using cups they made, makes the tea ceremony all the more personal. As they say, Karatsuyaki is not just for display, but to be used and enjoyed. http://doheigama.hananusubito.net
The tea house is an example of wabi-sabi, an aesthetic sense in Japanese art emphasising quiet simplicity, imperfection and impermanence.
Dohei Fujinoki’s son, Yotaro serves tea using his own Karatsu-yaki.
Karatsu-yaki is known for sturdiness and simple style, originally created as everyday tableware. www.fukuoka-now.com • 11

The courses are designed to be more than just a nature hike but a path of culture. There are several Olle courses in Kyushu, but one of the newest and closest to Fukuoka City is here in Karatsu. In just over 11km, the Karatsu course manages to take in a wonderful balance of natural, cultural and historic experiences ranging from Japanese gardens, castle ruins and traditional farms and workshops, stretching from mountains to the unique coastline. The variety of scenery is difficult to rival, and every season offers something new! The course is clearly marked with signs and ribbons; all you need is a sturdy pair of runners. Be sure to access our website for many more photos and details on this fun and healthy way to see Karatsu like never before!

FUKUOKA CITY BULLETIN SELECTED NEWS TOPICS BY FUKUOKA NOW FROM FUKUOKA CITY’S SHISEI DAYORI
◊ Plastic Recycling Trial
◊ Hakata City Walks
The City will conduct a trial to recycle old toys and other plastic goods. You can pick up and drop off collection bags on the 7th floor of Best Denki's main store (1-9-1 Chuo-ku, Fukuoka) until Mar. 15. Inquiries: Recycling Promotion Section (092-711-4039)
Come rediscover the hidden charms of Hakata on a Hakata City Walk. From Mar. 8 to 31, there will be a "stamp rally" in the Hakata area, concerts at temples and other fun events. Free copies of the Hakata City Walk Map are available at Tourist Information Counters or the Information Plaza on the 1st floor of City Hall. An English version can be downloaded from: http://www.hakatamap.jp/english.
◊ Disaster Prevention Info-mail Amid increasing concerns over PM2.5, the season for yellow dust and photochemical oxidants (i.e., smog) is fast approaching. Fukuoka City provides PM2.5, yellow dust and smog forecasts on its homepage and via its disaster prevention info-mail service. To sign up for the info-mail service, please send a blank e-mail to entry@fukuoka-city. jp and access the registration page from the automatically generated reply. Inquiries: Disaster Prevention & Crisis Management Section (092-711-4056)
◊ Discarding Garbage when Moving Burnable trash is collected twice a week, while non-burnable trash is collected once
◊ Help Reduce the Stray Cat Population
a month. You must apply in advance to dispose of oversized trash. Call the Oversized Trash Center (092-731-1153) to check fees, drop-off locations and collection dates. Trash is typically collected about one week after you apply. The City does not collect air conditioners, TVs, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines or dryers. Please make a reservation with a Best Denki store to pick these up.
City Hall has received a large number of complaints about stray cats. More than 80% of the cats that the City euthanizes are kittens. Please refrain from feeding stray cats to help reduce the population of ownerless cats. If you own a cat, please keep it indoors, spay or neuter it and make sure it has some form of identification, such as ID tags or a microchip implant. More and more neighborhoods are enacting measures to combat stray cats. For more information, call the Animal Welfare & Management Center (092-891-1231).
YIPEE! FOR FREE! Genki 3R Festival The Rinkai 3R Station (4-13-42 Hakozaki-futo, Higashi-ku) will host a hands-on "3R" (reduce, reuse, recycle) event on Sunday, Mar. 23 from 10:00 to 15:00. In addition to various activities, there will also be a used clothing collection booth co-sponsored by Yahoo Japan. Drop off your old clothes and get some ideas for reducing waste in your everyday life.
