renovated, but the steep staircase, creaky floorboards and tables made from recycled wood give the cafe a cozy, nostalgic feel. The best seat in the house is at the 2nd-floor window. Here, you can watch ships being built and gaze out at the Aratsu-Ohashi Bridge on the Urban Expressway. Whether you want to enjoy the scenery, curl up with a book or get some work done (outlets and Wi-Fi are available), Breath is a place where you can make yourself at home any time of the day. Jaap Mulder

aap Mulder first sailed into Hakata bay with his wife Marijke in 1989, as part of a yacht race during Yokatopia Expo from Auckland, Fukuoka’s sister city in New Zealand. The pair, who have “always been on adventures”, had set off from their home in the Netherlands five years previously on a self-built boat. They have since left Fukuoka three times to travel the world, visiting over 50 countries by sea, yet the pull of “the bay, mountains, seasons, and some good friends” always brings them back for more. Alishan, their current vessel, is now moored in Meinohama port alongside luxury catamaran “Fu Kyo”, which Jaap skippers for Fukuoka Sunset Sailing. When not setting sail with his customers for an evening jaunt, he enjoys running, hiking and fishing, and helps out at the local fish market. Jaap says Japan is a “cruising paradise” as the sailing scene is still relatively quiet, it’s safe and easy to moor a boat and there are many secret spots to discover – starting with the islands around Fukuoka, of course. orn in NY, Linda has lived in Fukuoka since 1981 and became involved in sailing when her kids joined a junior sailing club in Odo, Fukuoka. Linda currently sails out of Imazu Port on Sazanami, a 30ft. sailboat. She also skippers sail training trips out of Pearl Sea in Sasebo, Nagasaki on a seasonal basis. fukuoka-now.com/sailing GETTING STARTED There are two main yacht harbours in Fukuoka: Marinoa and Odo. If you enjoy yourself at an introductory sailing class, you can move on to a sailing club such as the OSSC (Odo Sunrise Sailing Club). Most club members are weekend sailors interested in dinghy sailing. The club provides the boats, which members maintain and enjoy sailing most weekends all year long, holding point races and social events. Annual membership fee is reasonable (around ¥30,000) and you don’t have to know anything about the sport. If you are willing to get wet, they are willing and ready to teach you!

DINGHY SAILING Dinghy sailing doesn’t require any special license or qualifications. If you know how to sail and you have your own boat, you can rent a space to keep it at Odo (approx. ¥7,660/month)

BIGGER BOATS If you want a bigger boat fitted with an engine, you’ll need to get a license. The twopart license test (with both practical and paper components) isn’t difficult…but it’s completely in Japanese! However, getting a license is the easy part. Finding a place to keep the boat is more difficult. More on that in our online guide too.

WHERE TO SAIL Day sailing on Hakata Bay has options such as Nokonoshima or Shikanoshima, where you can tie up and enjoy a nice lunch. For weekend sails, Iki Island, Yobuko and Hirado make for great sailing destinations. Most of these places are sailor-friendly and charge no fee. For more adventurous sailing, there are countless options all within a few days sail. Tsushima to the northwest; Sasebo, Nagasaki, and the Goto Islands to the west; Koshiki Islands and Kagoshima to the south. All these great places offer safe anchorages at next to nothing costs.

Whether you want to sail away for the weekend, for the whole week, or the whole Summer there is always someplace fun to go!

CLUBS

here are several sailing clubs in Fukuoka. The Hakata Yacht Club, the Fukuoka Yacht Club, the Genkai Yacht Club, the OSSC out of Odo and the White Sail race group. Some of the clubs charge membership fees, some are free. Go to the yacht harbors to ask around, and check the listings in the back of KAZI Magazine. Someone is always looking for a crew member!

The Kurogi wisteria tree is a 618-year-old national Natural Treasure, its vines extending for meters. 200,000 visit this event every year, and mid-April is prime viewing time. Browse the exhibition of local products and see the tree lit up a night - a magical sight.

Japan’s greatest tall ships event gathers tall ships from both home and abroad. There’s an arrival parade, sailing drill performance, you can board the ships, take a cruise of Nagasaki Port, or take a canoe class. Ships are illuminated and there are fireworks on the 28th and 29th.

Over one million people visit this annual festival in Arita, Saga Prefecture - a town renowned for fine ceramics and porcelain. For the 111th edition, stalls line the streets selling both discounted and fine ceramics. Stalls start opening at 6am, and there’s rice porridge for breakfast (¥500!)

有田陶器市

長崎に国内外から大小様々な帆船が集結する日本で随一の帆船イベント。圧巻の入港パレードにはじまり、真っ白な帆を広げるセイルドリルや船内を見学できる船内の一般公開、長崎港内クルーズ、カヌーやロープワーク（縄結び）教室などの体験型イベントも充実。夜には帆船がライトアップされ、 28・29日には打ち上げ花火もあがる。

陶磁器の町として知られる有田で開かれる今年で111回目を迎える陶器市。メインストリートの皿山通りには様々な陶器を扱う店が並ぶ。全国から100万人以上が訪れるため、いかに効率よく目当ての店に辿り着くかがポイント。早い店は朝6時過ぎから開店し、夕方まで賑わい続ける。朝6時から皿山通り地区で販売される朝粥 (500円) も人気だ。

◊ Fukuoka Marathon 2014 The cities of Fukuoka and Itoshima will hold a new full marathon for citizens on Nov. 9 (Sun). The course is designed to showcase the sights of Fukuoka. Runners can apply for one of three races: Full Marathon (42.195km; 10,000 spaces: ¥10,000 for domestic applicants; ¥12,000 for international applicants), Wheelchair Race (5km; 20 spaces; ¥3,000 (JHS students, ¥2,000)), or Fun Run (5km; 2,000 spaces; ¥3,000 (JHS students ¥2,000)). The regular application period is 4/15~5/19. There is also an early application period for residents of Fukuoka and Itoshima cities (3/24~4/14; Capacity: 1,000). ◊ Where to Get Certificates If you need a Certificate of Residence or a Seal Registration Certificate and can’t get to a Ward Office, you can stop by the Certificate Service Counter at the Information Plaza on the 1st floor of City Hall (092-733-5222) or the one located next to the Subway Customer Service Counter in Hakata Station (092-432-5353). Both counters are open 9:00~22:00. If you obtain

a Juki-Net Card and register in advance, you can have certificates issued at convenience stores throughout Japan (6:30~23:00). You can also request your own certificates at 35 post offices in the city by presenting a valid ID. (Weekdays: 9:00~17:00).

◊ Discarding Household Garbage Household garbage is separated into four types: Burnable, Non-burnable, Glass bottles/PET bottles, and Oversized. If you discard glass bottles as non-burnable garbage, they will end up in a landfill, but if you separate them properly, they can be recycled endlessly. Please recycle your glass bottles and jars using the designated yellow bags or take them to a recycling center.

◊ New Bicycle No-Parking Zone in Nakasu On Apr. 1, the area around Nakasu-Kawabata Station (Nakasu 1~5 and Nakasunakashimamachi) was designated as a bicycle noparking zone. Illegally parked bicycles will be removed regularly, and in some cases, immediately. Please be sure to park your bicycle in a designated lot. Hakata-Tenjin Tulip Road 100,000 tulips are about to liven up the streets between Hakata Station and Kego Park. The flowers were planted late last year by elementary school students and members of 29 local groups, including We Love Tenjin and the Hakata Development Council. Peak viewing time lasts until mid-April.

◊ Rate Increases In line with the consumption tax increase from 5% to 8% on Apr. 1, the following rates and fares will change. • Water and sewage: The new consumption tax rate will apply to your regularly calculated water and sewage bills. • Subway fares: The Zone 1 adult fare of ¥200 will remain the same, but fares for Zones 2~6 will increase by ¥10 each.
