Anpanman Museum Opening Report Fukuoka Anpanman Children’s Museum opened in Hakata Riverain on April 18. The museum celebrates Anpanman’s popularity over the past 26 years since the character was turned into an animated TV program. This March Ginza Bacana, a long-running Brazilian steakhouse in Tokyo, opened a new shop in Fukuoka called Joia Hakata. Here, the sweet aroma of grilled meat greets you at the door. Churrasco is typically an all-youcan eat affair. Not long after you sit down, a Brazilian churrasco chef appears at your table with long skewers of grilled meat and deftly slice off as much as you want right on the spot. Be sure to come hungry! ecessity is the mother of invention, or so the saying goes, and that helps to explain how Silvio Carannante now spends his days growing vegetables in Fukutsu, Fukuoka. Silvio came to Fukuoka to be with his wife Ai, a native of the area, and initially worked as a cook. There was plenty of oil, pasta and some cheese available in Fukuoka, but he had a difficult time finding good Italian vegetables. It happened that his wife’s family’s friend was a farmer and after some testing they discovered they could grow some very tasty Italian vegetables. Not only that, but once word got out, other chefs wanted those veggies too! In about two
years Silvio and Ai have become farmers full-time and are loving it! They now grow over 100 varieties, most of which are biodynamic. Friarelli, a broccoli-like Italian vegetable is one of their specialties. On weekends you can buy them at their tiny shop, but most sales are made online, to approximately 70 restaurants as far away as Tokyo. We expect to see more growth from Silvio and thank him for his contribution to Fukuoka. NISHIJIN WHEELED CART STALLS 西新リヤカー部隊 • Address: 4 Nishijin Sawara-ku, Nishijin Chuo Shotengai • Open: 13:00~ until sold out A symbol of the Nishijin Chuo Shotengai, merchants wheel in their old-style carts, loaded full of vegetables, fruit, flowers, plants and seafood to set up down the shopping strip from around 1pm on weekdays. In the past, there were around 100 of these carts, now there are only twelve or so, but they don’t fail to create a lively market atmosphere! The fresh produce comes from local farmers and fishermen in Nokonoshima, Sawara-ku and Nishi-ku areas, and some of the merchants are also growers themselves. Ask for their expert advice on how to cook and eat the vegetables.

The shop has a good selection of fruits and vegetables. They also serve up a menu of fresh fruit and veggie items seasonal smoothies, fruit juices, cocktails and treats like hot sweet potatoes with butter and ice cream in Winter and fresh baby potatoes fried in butter in Spring. The super friendly owner “Dairi” enjoys introducing fruit and vegetables to the young crowd in Daimyo. He also speaks some English and loves to help foreigners - so don’t be shy!

Makii’s produce comes from local farms (some of which they own) in Miyaura, Nishi-ku and the Shobu area in Fujimachi, Saga. They stock pesticide-free and fertilizer-free produce, along with bento and other ready-to-eat meals, cakes and natural yeast breads, all made without artificial additives and preservatives. Makii was one of the pioneering organic food stores in Fukuoka and is definitely worth a visit.

This 450-year old river-crossing festival is one of Fukuoka’s five major festivals. 10 large mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried by teams of 60 men from Fuuji Shrine across the Hikosan river on the 17th, where they are illuminated overnight, and on the 18th they are taken back across the river.
After performing in over 400 cities in 20 countries, surpassing 6 million spectators; TAO comes back to Fukuoka! 17 drummers perform this beautiful story of princesses travelling through time to meet and become samurai. Costume and set design capture the purely Japanese essence.
One of Japan’s three biggest port festas. See the excitement of “banana selling” (said to have originated at Moji Port), browse the flea market, see local dance, drumming, band shows on Saturday, and the festival’s climax on Sunday - the Celebratory Parade with 2,500 participants.

パレード、ステージ、フリー マーケット...開港100年以上経つ 門司港が今なお賑わう2日間は、 日本三大みなと祭のひとつに数 えらる。見所は25日に行われる 約2,500人が参加するカーニバル 形式の祝賀パレード。音楽隊や シャギリ隊、仮装車など地元の 企業団体が約5時間かけて街中を 賑やかに踊り歩く。艦船の一般 公開や、門司港名物バナナの叩 き売りなど港町ならではの祭り を楽しもう。

◊ Hakata Dontaku Port Festival The 53rd Hakata Dontaku Port Festival will be held on May 3 and 4. Approximately 20,000 Dontaku troupe members will parade down the 1.3km stretch of Meiji-dori Ave. from Gofukumachi to Tenjin, and various other events will be held on 34 stages throughout the city. People from the municipalities associated with Kanbei Kuroda will join a massive samurai parade to promote this year's NHK drama “Kanbei: The Strategist”.
◊ Mayor’s Message Fukuoka City aims to be “a leading city in Asia, balancing people, urban functions and the environment,” and the main players in its initiatives are you Mayor Soichiro Takashima the people. This fiscal year, the City has allocated budgets for training, interpersonal exchange and community action. The City was also designated as a National Strategic Zone for Job Creation and hopes to create the next generation of new companies while supporting existing companies that want to try something new. Together we can change Japan.

◊ FY2014 Budget: Making a City Where People Can Prosper Fukuoka City has approved a total budget of over ¥1.92 trillion for the 2014 fiscal year. At ¥776.3 billion, this year's general budget is ¥16.7 billion (+2.2%) more than last year’s, and it will be used to promote the Fukuoka City Master Plan—a future roadmap formulated in cooperation with the citizens. In an effort to train and connect people, the City will open a start-up cafe for young entrepreneurs, double the number of elementary and junior high school social workers to combat bullying and truancy, and establish Meeting Place Fukuoka—an expert organization tasked with bolstering efforts to attract international conventions.
