Wayne Macpherson

aving studied business to doctorate level, and currently teaching future CEOs at Fukuoka universities, it’s not surprising that the enterprising Wayne Macpherson spotted a gap in the market for a tasty, locally produced hot sauce. After experimenting in his Nishijin kitchen, he started giving his spicy apple-based creation to family and friends and has since been so inundated with requests for jars that he now sells it online. The original recipe, and Wayne’s favorite, is called Pirisko (from Japanese ‘sukoshi piri’ - a little spicy). He also makes Pirisko Hot (twice the spice) and Pirisgo (‘sugoi’ – five times as hot). He makes sure his children are in bed and holds his breath before opening the jar of ‘dangerous’ Indian Bhut Jolokia chilli which he uses to give the sauce its kick. It also contains a hint of sake - Wayne loves going out to his favorite grilled meat restaurant in Nishijin Shotengai or oyster huts in Momochi, and always takes his sauce with him. ootball fever is set to sweep across Fukuoka this summer as the 20th FIFA World Cup takes place in Brazil from June 12th to July 13th, with 32 countries from around the world battling to be crowned best in the world. The Japanese National Team (“Samurai Blue”) is getting ready to compete on the world stage, and Fukuoka is sure to get caught up in the spectacle. Football (or soccer/sakka as it is more commonly referred to in Japan) is now one of the most popular sports in Japan, having progressed to a level where Japanese players are represented at some of the biggest clubs in the world. As results on the international stage have improved so has the quality of the domestic game. The J-League has existed for over 20 years and is generally viewed as the highest quality league in Asia.

If you find yourself catching the football bug this summer, be sure to visit Fukuoka's very own J-League club; Avispa Fukuoka, playing their games at Level-5 Stadium. Avispa Fukuoka needs your support! Having dropped into J-League 2, they are currently embroiled in a battle to get promotion back into the top league. The team encountered some well-publicized financial problems in 2013, and they now look to rebuild a fresher, more youthful squad which has already achieved excellent, nerve-shredding victories against some of the toughest teams in the division this season. fter enduring the worst season in the history of the club in 2012 (a season during which the club finished 18th in J2 having been relegated from J1 the previous year) the decision was made to take the bold step of recruiting a manager from overseas to try and change the fortunes of the club. The man brought to oversee the new era at the club was Slovenian Marijan Pusnik, a manager who has previous top level management experience in his home country of Slovenia and Iran. Having previously managed clubs

in European competition - during which he masterminded a victory over a Spanish Villareal team managed by current Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini - he faces a new challenge in trying to return Avispa Fukuoka to J1. With the club having made a good start to the season, Fukuoka Now spoke with Avispa manager Marijan Pusnik and three top players. Here are some excerpts from their interviews - read the full text online.

TAKESHI KANAMORI 金森健志 (Bright new star and new local hero) On aspirations: “I think it is important to set goals which you can then aim for and try to achieve.” On a foreign manager: “This is the first time I've had a foreign manager. I really appreciate that he gives young players a chance in this.”

MARIJAN PUSNIK (MANAGER) On being a manager:“Sport is my life. My training is as a sports teacher - I haven't always been a coach of professional teams - so I would say that I am not a manager, but first and foremost a teacher.” On football in Japan: “Japanese football is very good, they've played in the World Cup for the last 3-4 tournaments, there are 50 Japanese players playing in Europe, and more players are going to be able to do so.” On the 2014 World Cup: “Oh ho! I have many tips! There are teams which I prefer to others as a fan not a coach, but as a coach I would say there are 7-8 teams able to win this tournament.”

Toho Village Hoshuyama Hotaru Festival

Hakataza’s 15th anniversary year brings many kabuki masterpieces, including local Kyushu tales, told by magnificent casts. The day program includes a traditional Tokiwazu dance, and a sexy comical stage; the evening show features Kan Kikuchi’s famous tale, and a great work of Japanese dance.

Known as Fukuoka’s top firefly spot, prime viewing is from late May to mid-June, and festival on June 6. Local food stalls, an event stage with live hula, Taishokoto and bands and, of course, glowing fireflies in the night’s sky. Shuttle bus from JR Hoshuyama available during the festival.

Yobuko Tug-of-War This 400-year-old event involves a big tug-of-war between two teams of Yobuko citizens using a thick, 400m long rope. A gong and flaming arrows start the event! If the land team wins, a good harvest is expected, if beach team wins, a good year for fishing is ahead.

博多座開場15周年を飾る今回は、男の意地と風情が見どころの「角力場」、華やかな舞踊「三人形」、上方和事の「雁のたより」の3演目が昼の部に、夜の部は菊池寛初期の傑作「恩讐の彼方に」、新歌舞伎十八番のひとつ「船弁慶」、宙乗り・早替わり・本水などケレン味溢れる「鯉つかみ」が毎日公演される。好きな演目を一幕だけ観劇できる「一幕見券」もあるので、気軽に歌舞伎を楽しもう！

ゲンジボタルの観賞スポットとして著名な東峰村。5月下旬〜6 月中旬、棚田親水公園一帯は県内でもトップクラスのホタル数を誇る。ホタル観賞は20〜21時頃、風が少なく気温が低くない日が狙い目。毎年6月第一土曜に開催されるほたる祭は、大正琴などのステージイベントの他、村人による夜店で賑わう。幻想的なホタルの乱舞と祭で初夏の風物詩を堪能しよう。

400年前に兵の士気を鼓舞するためにはじめられたとされ、呼子の町を岡組と浜組に分け、ドラと火矢を合図に直径15cm、長さ400mもある大綱を老若男女が一斉に引き合う。岡組が勝てばその年は豊作、浜組が勝てば大漁になると言われている。1日目がこども綱、2日目がおとな綱となっており、見物客も飛び入りで参加できるので毎年大勢の観光客で賑わう。

Now in its 23rd year, this public-private cleanup event that began in Fukuoka has since spread to the rest of Kyushu and Okinawa as well as Pusan, Korea. No applications are required and everyone is welcome. Dress comfortably, bring work gloves and meet at one of the 160 meeting spots around the city. ◊ Keep Cool with a ‘Green Curtain’ You can help save energy this summer by growing a ‘green curtain’ of morning glories or other vining plants. Green curtains cool your home by blocking out the sun’s rays and preventing heat buildup; the moisture that evaporates from the plants also has a cooling effect. ◊ Fuel for Eco Cars Fukuoka is working with corporate partners and Kyushu University on an unprecedented initiative to generate hydrogen from sludge for use in fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). The project, which will be conducted at the Central

HIV Testing Week (6/1~7) The Central Public H ea l t h Ce nte r ( 2 Maizuru, Airefu 5F) will offer free tests with same-day results to the first 50 persons who apply on 6/ 7 (Sat), 14:00~15:00, to coincide with National HIV Testing Week. Wastewater Treatment Plant, entails fermenting sludge, a byproduct of wastewater treatment, to generate biogas. Hydrogen will be extracted from the biogas and sold via a filling station for FCVs. ◊ Akasaka Station Area Designated Bicycle NoParking Zone On 6/1, the area around Akasaka Station (Akasaka 1, Daimyo 1~2, and parts of Maizuru 1~3) was designated as a bicycle no-parking zone. The City designates bicycle no-parking zones in high traffic areas and builds parking lots within these zones. It also employs enforcement officers to conduct awarenessraising activities and remove illegally parked bicycles.
